Grandmas are the key to survival

randma Edna, my mom’s mom, was introverted. A shy and quiet farm wife, she was a champion at food growing, gathering, preserving and serving. In contrast, Grandma Aline, dad’s mom, was talkative and bold. Why am I talking about grandmas? Because there are now ample studies showing the evolutionary advantage of mothers having their own mothers around to help them. Grandfathers, not so much — but that’s another column. While that’s good to know, I am often highly cynical about studies, primarily due to the broadcast minutes and column inches I’ve seen lame-brain misogynist commentators receive over the years. They would use bogus studies (or misinterpret genuine ones) to prove that rape was an evolutionary advantage that helped expand the gene pool. I was never able to make a dent in the use of junk science to justify rape culture, aka male supremacy. If I had the money, I would sponsor a global study on women who defend themselves and the biological advantage that gives them! I’ll never forget what happened when I was a broadcast journalist in Sacramento. A massive story at the time, from an unpublished study (later debunked), was that single white women over 30 had a better chance of being killed by terrorists than finding a husband. The panic that story caused still reverberates today with “spinster” fear. More infuriating is that credible studies since then have found that child and spouse-free women generally lead happier lives than their married counterparts who have kids. Why is that being suppressed? Do any of you remember a book from 1994 called “The Bell Curve: Intelligence and Class Structure In American Life” by Richard J. Herrnstein and Charles Murray? Their “findings” regarding race, gender and intelligence caused a colossal brouhaha in academia and popular culture. Unsurprisingly, women and BIPOC folks didn’t fare well, and the pernicious damage done to our society after the media ran with this story is still with us. Today’s conversations about inclusivity are a welcome rebuttal to the flawed studies and methodologies used by the authors. On the flip side, “Delusions of Gender: How Our Minds, Society, and Neurosexism Create Difference” by Cordelia Fine is a must-read. Dr. Fine rips the curtain back on the white male wizards of science who use their various disciplines to make “hard-wire” arguments that allow for bad white male behavior and inherent superiority. Part of pulling back the curtain has to do with examining which studies get funded in the first place. When our colleges and universities are top-heavy with the interests of cis white men, it stands to reason their

studies will receive more attention and money. When higher education admits more people of different backgrounds, the Ph.D. candidates will study those subjects that matter to them. Statistically, there’s apt to be more female scientists who will draw upon their own lived experience. A scientist who has given birth is more inclined to apply for grants quantifying mothering or infant survival. Once such a study is funded, does it get published? If there are no women in editorial positions, there’s usually no one to advocate for publication or even commentary. An example of this kind of change is the New York Times. After more women and BIPOC staffers were added, more diverse content magically started appearing on the Grey Lady’s pages. Diversity makes a difference across the board. I have a few conversational doozies that underline the need for diversity in the physical sciences. A mass burial site was found in Manhattan. One of the skeletons had fractures on its ankles. “Hmm. This is odd,” Mr. Clueless Preppy White Man Archaeologist says. “What would cause that?” The black intern immediately replies, “Shackles.” On another dig, one “digger” found a bone that had 28 slashes on it. He says, “This hunter must have had a good hunting season — this indicates that he bagged 28 deer!” His female colleague says, “Dude, this is a woman’s tally of her menstrual cycle.” Speaking of archaeology, don’t get me started about the DNA tests verifying that warriors previously identified as male turned out to be female. By now, you’re probably saying, “This is all fascinating, but what does any of it have to do with your grandmothers?!” Now that there are more women studying people traditionally left out of studies, that will be reflected in what gets studied — and, in turn, what makes it into the news. And a definitely newsworthy fact is that humans do better when there’s a grandma around. I admit to having cousin envy, as my cousins had more grandmother time than I did. My parents moved far away from my grandmas before my birth. We only got to see them during visits once or twice a year. I can glimpse echoes of myself in them; I am shy and also bold. I know that my grandmas were entertained by me, yet they were also relieved when they could leave. I know I’m better for having had them in my life, and I don’t need a study to tell me that. Jason Achilles Mezilis finds second career in space By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski Pasadena Weekly Executive Edito

hen Jason Achilles Mezilis saw the Mars 2020 Perseverance Rover land safely, he admits, with a laugh, that he cried like a baby. He had reason to, though. The Studio City, California, musician worked with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena to perfect Mars 2020 Perseverance Rover’s microphone used to record sounds inside the 28-mile-wide (45 kilometers) Jezero Crater. “Music was always a dream,” Mezilis said. “It was an attainable dream. Space is rad, but I didn’t think it would ever be a real thing. The last number of years, though, I thought, ‘Maybe it can be a thing.’” Encouraged by Arizona State University (ASU) professor Jim Bell, Mezilis made both of his dreams come true. “Jim Bell was one of my main guys who said, ‘Don’t worry. You can do this,’” Mezilis said. “Weirdly enough, he was right.” Mezilis connected with NASA by banging on doors and rattling cages, he said with a laugh. He broke through after pitching David Gruel (assembly, test and launch operations manager for Mars Perseverance at JPL) his concepts for informing a working audio selection, largely based on his work as an audio engineer for the past decade. “When I was hired as a consultant for JPL in 2017, I had to incorporate because they couldn’t hire me as an individual,” Mezilis said. “I had to start a company, Zandef Deksit Inc. Since then, we’ve been developing an idea for this selfie cam for rocket landings. It’s this Lunar ExoCam.” Mezilis landed a $650,000 grant from NASA’s Flight Opportunities program to develop that. The grant calls for him to work with an educational institution, so he chose ASU. Once Lunar ExoCam hits the surface, it can visualize a landing as if the viewer was standing there watching it. Besides ASU, the Lunar ExoCam project also includes contributions from Honeybee Robotics, Ecliptic Enterprises Corp. and Masten Space Systems. “I didn’t go to school for this type of work or study it,” Mezilis said. “I’m a professional musician. It’s something I’ve just wanted to do.” Mezilis has been a professional musician since high school. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, he toured as a solo instrumentalist under the name Jason Achilles, accompanied by drummer Forrest Mitchell. He also runs his Downtown LA boutique analog recording studio, Organic Audio Recorders, and is working with Dizzy Reed (Guns N’ Roses) on his forthcoming solo album. “People had a hard time remembering my last name,” said Mezilis, who loves The Rogue Bar in Phoenix. “I would just get blank stares. “But music and science are my everything. For me, it’s personally been wonderful. One of the cool things about working with NASA is Perseverance had to land that day. This was beyond the programs of the world. NASA pulled this off and made it work just incredibly.” Mezilis is set to release a new EP later this spring, which was launched with the release of the single “RTL (Ready to Launch)” in December. The second single, “Eurotrash,” debuted February 26 across all streaming platforms. He rolls his two loves into talks with students in kindergarten through sixth grade students. “I’ve been a big nerd about space since I was a kid,” he said. “I like going and talking to kids about this stuff. I’ve been doing Zoom classes with third graders ever since this thing landed. I’ve had a lot of requests to talk to kids about this stuff. I try to tie in the music aspect of things. Rocket science is an unreachable goal to kids. Music is already something that’s already part of their lives. That might seem crazy, but this is something you’re doing already.” The whole experience has been a thrill for Mezilis. But there is a “but.” His name is nowhere on the NASA website. “If you go on the NASA website, my name’s not associated with anything anywhere. I have no idea if history recognized the involvement or not. It’s pretty (expletive) cool to me. I would love to be attached to this,” he said. “We did play a relevant role in it. I don’t think it’s undeserved.”

Reported cases in Pasadena and surrounding areas as of May 9 South Pasadena: 1,321; Alhambra: 6,851; Unincorporated - Altadena: 3,315; Arcadia: 2,715; Glendale: 19,987; Monrovia: 3,167; San Gabriel: 3,232 Total confirmed cases in Pasadena: 11,252 Total deaths in Pasadena: 346 Total confirmed cases in LA County: 1,235,651 Total deaths in LA County: 23,999 • Pasadena officials reported seven new cases of COVID-19 with no additional deaths on May 7. The seven-day daily case average has increased from 3.3 to 4. The Pasadena Public Health Department has reported 11,252 cases with 346 total fatalities. The Public Health Department also announced Los Angeles County reached its record lowest hospitalization rate. The five-day average of daily hospitalizations is 389 with 22% in intensive care units. The county has reported 1,235,561 known cases with 23,999 deaths in total with 248 new cases and five additional deaths on May 9. Los Angeles County accounts for 34% of California’s COVID-19 cases and 39% of the state’s deaths. • Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer said the number of shots administered in Los

Angeles County fell by 25% last week. Most vaccination sites offer shots without appointments because of this massive drop. The county has decreased the size of its four large-scale vaccination sites, although they will remain open to the public for vaccine administration. CVS Health announced on May 5 that it is accepting walk-in appointments for vaccines at more than 1,000 stores in California, including Pasadena. Same-day scheduling is available at CVS and more than 8,300 CVS locations nationwide are administering the vaccine. • Los Angeles County is nearing 24,000 COVID-19 deaths. Even with the improving situation, people who haven’t received their vaccination are still at a higher risk of infection. Currently, 39% of county residents have been fully vaccinated of which 67% are residents ages 65 and older and 33% are between the ages of 16 and 64. The federal government may open vaccinations to youth between the ages of 12 and 15 as early as next week, which can increase the demand for the Pfizer vaccine. Latino and Black residents in the county continue to have the lowest vaccination rates: only 37% of eligible Black residents have been vaccinated and only 40% of the Latino community has been vaccinated. Rick Cole returns home to Pasadena By Matthew Rodriguez Pasadena Weekly Deputy Editor

A

fter almost 30 years away from Pasadena politics, Rick Cole has returned to his hometown as a special housing adviser to Mayor Victor Gordo. “I always intended to come home — this is my hometown,” Cole said. “I’m honored and grateful that he’s given me his trust and support to help him achieve the goals that he spoke eloquently [about] during the campaign.” In his new role, along with a 17-member housing task force, Cole will help the city comply with the state mandate to plan more than 9,000 new housing units, 6,000 of which must be affordable. Many have thought that this mandate is impossible, with the city council recently losing an appeal with the state. The city must submit a draft revision of the housing element by July, a final draft by October and adopt a state-approved draft by January. “I want to thank Mr. Cole for stepping up to the challenge, giving of his time to share his advice and counsel on housing matters for the benefit of our community,” Gordo said. ‘I aimed to make change’ After graduating from college, Cole never thought about running for public office as a career.

However, after earning his master’s degree at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, Cole returned to his hometown hoping to change what he saw as harmful policies by the Pasadena City Council. Upset by the destruction of historic architecture and low-income neighborhoods, Cole persuaded his high school teacher to run for city council and managed his campaign. “I wasn’t looking to be a campaign manager. I wasn’t looking to be on the city council,” Cole said. “I was looking to change the course of Pasadena politics. I didn’t aim to get into politics; I aimed to make change and politics is just one of the routes.” After managing his teacher’s campaign, Cole stayed connected to Pasadena politics, serving 12 years on the city council and creating Pasadena Weekly. But after a stint as mayor, Cole left his hometown to continue his career in public service elsewhere. He served as the city manager for Azusa, Ventura and Santa Monica, as well as Los Angeles deputy mayor. In this time, Cole garnered awards and accolades such as the “Excellence in Management Award” and was also honored by Governing Magazine as one of its “Public Officials of the Year.” He was chosen as the new executive director of the Congress of New Ur-

am Russell is an open book. As a 15-year-old in Austin, Russell was left without his police officer father after he was killed on duty. He said it was the best thing that’s happened to him. “He was a very abusive man,” said Russell, a Pasadena resident. “My father was plotting to kill my family. It’s something we have not been allowed to talk about as adults. It was always dark when he was around. The darkness ended when he left the planet. I’m very thankful for all the light and the dark. It developed my personality as it is today and the boundaries that I draw.” This leads to his story. He’s made it his mission to break the DNA code of suffering in his family tree by uplifting and celebrating strong women who persevere through hardships and go on to thrive. The celebrity wardrobe stylist is sharing his wealth through the Giving Closet, a marriage of fashion and human-interest stories, ripe for transformational television and branded-content mediums. A recent giveaway was captured on HLN’s “Morning Express Starring Robin Meade,” where top designers like Byron Lars donated goods and received equitable placement. The recipients are women who are survivors of cancer or violent trauma. These women are gifted a surprise wardrobe boost valued at more than $10,000. He recently bestowed this upon another woman at a private residence in Mount Washington. “This very deserving woman experienced a near-death attack at the hands of her former husband,” Russell said. “This was regional breaking news in 2014.” The complete rack of clothes for chosen women include everything from designer dresses, tops, handbags, jewelry and pajamas. Each surprise giveaway is unique and specific for the selected woman. Every garment and accessory are carefully selected and personally chosen by Russell, who has worked with Stevie Wonder, Jon Hamm, Chuck Lorre, Sophia

banism, a nonprofit aimed at improving urban areas. All hands on deck While Cole understands there is no catch-all answer to solving the housing crisis, he hopes to suggest win-win policies that would “make housing more affordable and reduce the number of homeless people in our city.” Cole hopes to reacquire and repurpose the 67 acres that were going to be used for the State Route 710 extension. The land lays empty after the project was scrapped. Pasadena and Caltrans have been coordinating to give the land back to the city for a little over a year. Cole hopes to repurpose this land for housing once again. Before the project, California officials demolished hundreds of homes and displaced thousands of residents, many of whom were working-class people of color. “There’s a real win-win to get rid of an ugly scar, both psychic as well as physical,” Cole said. Cole also hopes to reduce the number of homeless people in Pasadena, something that he has been working toward since his time as a council member. “When I was on the Pasadena City Council, when the 1990 census came out it said we had 230-some in Pasadena, I thought it was a gross

underestimate,” he said. Cole started the first homeless count in Pasadena and the state. “We counted more than 1,000 homeless people at that time,” he said. While Cole said he believes Pasadena has been doing a good job trying to solve homelessness, but there’s a long way to go to significantly reduce that population. “It’s kind of an all-hands-on-deck challenge,” he said. “The worst thing we can do about homelessness is to avert our eyes and assume that it’s just a part of urban life. That’s unsustainable politically and financially.” In addition to assisting homeless people to get stable housing and services, Cole hopes to prevent working-class families from becoming homeless in the first place. “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of the cure,” Cole said. “The longer people stay homeless the more difficult and expensive it is to deal with.” Cole hopes to bring the amount of homeless as close to zero as possible. “We should get it as close to zero as we can,” he said. “There’s always going to be periodic homelessness… but that should be a tiny, tiny percentage of the population.”

Bush, Melora Hardin, Jeannie Mai and Donna Mills. The Giving Closet is gratifying so many times over, he said. “It’s about taking yourself out of your ego,” he said. “You are really focusing on your healthiest relationship. When I was obsessed in Hollywoodland, my goal was to make it to the next production or the next celebrity. I wasn’t focused on my well-being. My charity has allowed me to look at this deeper.” Raised by a single mom Russell was one of three boys raised by a single mother after his dad’s death. He went to therapy for years, became involved in abusive relationships yet still learned to heal. “No one heals in silence,” Russell said. “I tried to commit suicide twice. I suffered in silence. I ended up in an abusive relationship. I was a powerful, connected person behind the scenes.” A three-year Pasadena resident, Russell came to Hollywood in 1999. “I couldn’t take another hot summer in Texas,” he said. “I had no money to my name. I jumped on a Greyhound, stayed on a friend’s couch for a little bit and moved to the East Coast for a minute. My partner and I live in Pasadena. I feel so much more at home here than anywhere else I’ve ever lived.” The first person he worked with was Richard Tyler, whose South Pasadena home was gutted in the summer of 2012. “It’s been a 360-degrees journey for me, now that I’m back in Pasadena,” Russell said. “I’ve been on a journey to see if fashion can spark joy. I came here in 1999 like everybody else, with a dream of working in showbusiness. I realized something was missing in my life. I needed to connect the dots.” One day, he was driving down a canyon, leaving a celebrity’s home. He had free clothing and products and realized all of that would help a cancer or an abuse survivor. “I put it into action,” he said. “That was the birth of Giving Closet. “It’s been really cool seeing them afterward. I try to stay in touch with the 18 women. Out of those 18, 16 of them are success stories. That’s a really big ratio. It’s fun to see them three or six months later with job interviews, a new business or a new relationship. That’s the best part of it.” He asks public relations handlers to reroute the small portion of the gifted items to the “amazing” women Russell finds through social workers, nonprofits or those sponsoring their reconstructive surgery. “The element of surprise is key,” he said. “It’s about spirit. It’s not about ego. We can all break through. You just have to get in touch with the pain and work through what happened. If we put it out there, if we expose our wounds, they start to diffuse their power and pain. The only strength they have is when they sit inside of us in silence.”

asadena Plaza recently welcomed Macy’s Backstage, a third-level specialty shop that store manager Angela Berardo said is for the savvy and cost-conscious shopper. Macy’s Backstage provides customers value and newness, guaranteeing that with each visit, shoppers will find a compelling assortment of recognizable brands, trends and deals. The store-within-store shopping experience features “significant savings” on top-quality products. Macy’s Backstage selection will include fresh product from both new and established brands for men, women and children. Deals on housewares, home textiles and décor, cosmetics, hair and nail care, gifts, jewelry, shoes, designer handbags, accessories and activewear. “It’s designer (items) for a fashionable customer on a budget,” Berardo said. “The merchandise is ordered in a smaller quanity, so we rotate it on a daily and weekly basis. You can come shop on a Monday, see a great handbag and wait to buy it. You best buy it right away because on Thursday, it may no longer be there. “It’s not the depth of assortment that we have in the big box. It’s that thrill of the hunt for customers.” Berardo said Macy’s Backstage is set up differently than the primary store. It’s efficient shopping with clean signage and visuals. “It’s set up for immediate shopping,” she said. “It does take up about 11,300 square feet of our third level. It’s a nice size, but it’s not too big. “It’s just truly a complement to the (main) Macy’s store.”

Daddy’s Chicken Shack By Frier McCollister Pasadena Weekly Contributing Writer

addy’s Chicken Shack is easy to miss but not so easy to forget. “Downhome, casual,” is how owner and chef, Pace Webb described her eatery. “No presentation, no fuss. Hole-in-the-wall is the goal here.” Around the corner from Fair Oaks on Dayton Street, it’s not an actual shack but the front-of-house area is all of 100 square feet. “We opened November 2018. It’s literally the smallest restaurant in Pasadena.” Webb’s formula proved successful almost immediately, as her custom fried chicken sandwiches pushed the restaurant through the pandemic. Webb comes from three generations of Texan hostesses, who provided the spark of inspiration for her culinary dreams. “I come from a long line of ladies who love to entertain,” Webb said. “I have a great-grandmother, a grandmother and a mother who just really love to host and bring people together. There’s definitely an art to it. Growing up I took it for granted that everyone knew how to throw a great gathering of any size.” Webb’s mother was a theater actress, who continued to stoke the family’s tradition of hospitality. “Opening night parties were always at our house,” Webb said. “She always had that touch to throw a dimmer on the lights, or put the best samba music on. But nothing was ever very precious. The ambiance was really just people coming together to have a good time. “I had this moment as a teenager, when I looked around at one of the parties. I thought, ‘I want to be on this side of the party as opposed to just a guest. I want to host.’ (But) I didn’t think that was really a profession.” A bout with colon cancer as a senior in high school set Webb on a path to a healthier lifestyle, which coincided with her affinity for hospitality. “That got me on a very long journey with food and health and lifestyle,” she said. “The interest in health evolved into just eating the best quality whole foods over joyful occasions. It evolved into, ‘Let’s celebrate the best beef that there is, the best pork that there is, the best seasonal vegetables that there are.’ It just happened to marry with people gathering over food.” Arriving in Southern California in 2006, Webb was unsure of where to take her culinary inspirations. “As a youngster trying to figure out what I wanted to do culinarily, I had little direction. I was working three jobs at the time: at a bakery; assisting at the culinary school; staging at restaurants. Trying to figure out, what do I want to do?”

A series of informal catering jobs snowballed successfully. “People would ask me, ‘Could I cater this party, could I cater that party.’ It took on a life of its own and evolved into something very naturally with my catering business.” That catering business — Taste of Pace — soon became quite busy, serving “regional Italian by way of California.” In 2014, a large celebrity-driven event led to an invitation to cater a smaller casual party with a menu of tacos and sliders. It would prove providential. “This fried chicken sandwich sounded really good with Thai-style slaw, sriracha mayo, buttermilk fried chicken, brioche bun. What could possibly go wrong? It’ll be great. I didn’t even test it.” The sandwich was a hit. “People were freaking out about the fried chicken sliders. That night, my sous chef and I (said), ‘Maybe we have something here. Wouldn’t it be fun to just serve folks fried chicken sandwiches?’ Just focus on one thing and do it really, really well.” A talk with her father sealed the deal. “I called my dad the next day,” she said. “‘What do you think? It could be your retirement plan and we could call it Daddy’s.’ Daddy’s Chicken Shack has a really cute ring to it. So, we put together a business plan for it.” It wasn’t until Webb met her partner, Chris Georgalas, a year later, that the plan really took off. Launching the concept as a one-off pop-up Downtown, Webb’s recipe again proved itself. “It was awesome. It was so busy and so successful.” The success of the pop-up led the couple to a regular presence at Smorgasburg, the popular weekly Sunday food fair Downtown. In the meantime, Georgalas was on a mission to find a permanent home for the concept and quickly landed on Dayton Street in Pasadena. “He found this location on his third try. We went to go see it. It was green lights all the way around, serendipitous, a meant-to-be situation.” However, as Webb noted, “It’s one thing to find the location. It’s another to open the doors and stay in business.” The straightforward menu and casual accessibility quickly proved to be popular and sustainable. Fried chicken sandwiches are the destination here, though there are convincing vegan options as well. The recipe hasn’t changed much. The fresh chicken is brined in buttermilk overnight before double dredging and frying, all served on a brioche bun with napa CONTINUED ON PAGE 10

slaw and sriracha mayonnaise. The Big Daddy ($12) and the Spicy Daddy ($12) front the menu. There is also the choice of three Little Daddy sliders ($12) as well as popcorn chicken ($12). The Vegan Daddy ($13) and the Vegan Daddy Nuggets ($9) are composed of fried cauliflower brined in curried coconut milk and served with sambal mayo, cilantro and mint. The nuggets are served with a scattering of salted lime peanuts. On a random Monday afternoon, a new customer, Edwina Daniel, arrived to order the vegan nuggets having sampled them at a small party the day before. “It was so delicious,” she said. “I came over here now to get some.” If the vegan nuggets draw this attention, the fried chicken sandwich is definitely worth a try. That said there are also breakfast options, served all day: two Southern Daddy biscuit sammies ($10); the famous breakfast burrito ($11); or the Mornin’ Daddy breakfast sando ($10). Because Webb’s model was already well-designed for takeout and delivery, no hard pivots were required when the pandemic lockdown came last March. As general manager Brooke Saul noted, “It’s actually gotten busier. We were already on these (delivery) apps. We saw those numbers skyrocket. We were ready to go.” However, with Smorgasburg closed, that revenue stream evaporated, and Webb engaged with the city’s Great Plates program to provide meals for front-line workers and homebound elders. “It really helped our catering business to stay afloat,” Webb said. “It felt good to be helping other people. It felt heroic. It was a really cool program.” Webb and Georgalas live six blocks away from the “shack” with their 2-year-old daughter, Asa, and share a backyard with his brother’s family. It’s all downhome here. “I just love to feed people really delicious food,” Webb said. “It’s my love language. My food is a warm hug.”

A

bout…Productions has been reaching out to at-risk, low-income youth in Pasadena with workshops designed to empower them to become more successful in school and life. The program, Young Theaterworks, reaches into Pasadena and East LA public schools. On Saturday, May 15, the production company will celebrate two decades of work with the retrospective variety show “The Young Theaterworks Experience: Twenty Years of Storytelling, Culture and Community.” With a combination of prerecorded and live performances, “The Young Theaterworks” premieres at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 15. It will then be available on About…Productions’ website through June. “It will uplift youth voices as well as community elders and honor that community culture and community history,” said lead teaching artist, actor and singer Marlene Beltran Cuauhtin. The event covers the organization’s beginnings through the pandemic, where it had to pivot to provide services in new ways. The lineup includes the five teaching artists, workshop and residency students and testimonials from community members.

Students will perform monologues and there will be interactive Young Theaterworks exercises. “We’re proud to be celebrating Young Theaterworks’ 20 years of serving low-income, highest-risk and educationally disadvantaged youth,” said Theresa Chavez, co-founder and producing artistic director. “From its inception, Young Theaterworks has been dedicated to providing public high schools with transformative residencies that reflect About…Productions’ focus on literacy, the collaborative process and uncovering buried cultural histories. Our teaching artists awaken students’ power to find their creative voice, improve their academic achievement, boost their confidence and strengthen their communication and collaboration skills.” The event will celebrate student work in several ways. Some will share original monologues, while others will see teaching artists perform their work. The free one-hour event is open to the public. It represents work from four LA-area high schools: Garfield, Ramona, Marshall and Rose City high schools. The schools did two programs this year — “Art of the Monologue” workshops and a “Collective Playwriting” residency. Youth Theaterworks changed its program this year in response to the pandemic CONTINUED ON PAGE 12

Taking up the mantle Cuauhtin has been working with Young Theaterworks since 2015, but was named lead teaching artist in mid-2020, at a time when the pandemic changed the world. She took the program online and worked with teachers to provide a Zoom experience. The Monologue Workshop was designed as a six-week residency in Pasadena and East LA high schools to introduce students to the conflict of monologues and the art of storytelling. “It is just an opportunity for students to express themselves, an opportunity to dream about something that is not common in their lives or to examine some of the thoughts and feelings that they have,” Cuauhtin said. Getting students involved Students are graded on the workshop, so it isn’t necessarily a choice to be part of the program. The classroom teacher decides for them. However, Cuauhtin said, students decide how much they want to engage, especially in the virtual space. “Students have a bit more agency over their level of engagement,” Cuauhtin said. “If they don’t turn on their camera or unmute themselves or connect in the chat — that’s a choice they have to make every day which has to do with showing up. Showing up has become an important part of our mantra.” Once students show up, the teaching artists encourage them to engage and to express themselves through their life experiences or story creation. “When we were able to get students on camera speaking unmuted, it was just revolutionary,” Cuauhtin said. “We work with underserved youth and the goal is to be able to provide an opportunity for students that they might not otherwise get to engage in arts education.” They learn to create a monologue or a play. Teaching artists are modeling life skills

about how to work together, build community and stay connected in the community. They were met by skeptical classroom teachers, who had been struggling to engage their students. They warned the teaching artists that they had students they’d never seen or heard. They said the artists were welcome, but they weren’t certain how it would go. “I really had to express that yes, this is going to be challenging. I’m not telling you it is going to be easy, but it is worth the challenge of figuring it out. I feel fortunate the classroom teachers said, let’s do it,” Cuauhtin said. She said they stressed the hard work of building community and ensembles with any tools they had. “Some days we only communicated by chat. There were many days where students wouldn’t come on camera,” Cuauhtin said. “It became a revolutionary act for students to feel comfortable enough to be engaged in a fully present way.” That’s why there is a mix of students performing their monologues on May 15, and teaching artists are sharing student monologues. Cuauhtin said, for many students, it was a big deal for them to share their stories through different mediums. “It is another way of honoring that work and that exchange when we go into the space,” Cuauhtin said. “We’re going in with a sense that we are all part of this classroom collective. We’re here to listen to what you want and need. If you don’t want to perform, do you want your work to be heard? If yes, we’ll perform it for you.” Celebrating collaboration With 20 years under its belt, About…Productions continues to commit to youth who need opportunities like this. Cuauhtin credits the teaching artists she works with and Chavez. Like Cuauhtin, the teaching artists are of color and that reflects the communities they serve. In addition to Cuauhtin, the teachers are Carissa Pinckney, Edwin Alexis Gomez, Brandon Rachal and Eddie Ruiz. “They have a dedication to their craft, which I think is super important to being a theater artist,” Cuauhtin said. “We go in as artists who are currently out there pursuing our fields and at the same time giving back to our community and teaching what we love. So, I really want to commend the work of the whole team. It couldn’t be done without them.”

Danny Elfman returns with ‘Nightmare’ By Pasadena Weekly Staff

“T

im Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas” is bringing Jack to Banc of California Stadium on Friday, Oct. 29. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday, May 14, through ticketmaster.com, for $39.50 to $179.50. Helmed by Danny Elfman, the performance is a live-to-film concert experience set to Disney’s timeless holiday classic. Elfman — who composed the original film’s music, lyrics and score — will reprise his famed original singing voice role of Jack Skellington. Additional original voices and special guest stars will be revealed soon. Acclaimed conductor John Mauceri will conduct a full orchestra and choir performing the film’s classic score and songs live, accompanying Elfman singing live in sync with the film. “Jack is back!” Elfman said. “I was so sorry to have missed last Halloween. (We all know why). But, I’m not skipping this year. Jack wants to get back on stage. I can’t wait to see you all.” In a statement, concert co-producers Richard Kraft and Laura Engel said, “We’re thrilled to celebrate this iconic film with an extraordinary concert experience mixing film, live music, singers, and immersive digital animation that can only be experienced live.” Co-producers Alison Ahart Williams, Tim Fox and Georgina Ryder added, “As the world is able to once again celebrate live music and art together as a community, we are proud to be able to bring Jack back to the Los Angeles community and look forward to celebrating right alongside the fans.” The evening will also include a variety of preshow activities, such as a costume contest (“Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas”-inspired costumes highly encouraged) along with trick-or-treating, bringing the spirit of Halloween Town to the Banc of California Stadium. As the first film music concert event at the stadium, the show will also be tailored to its new venue to provide a new experience even for those who have seen previous iterations of the show. The concert event will be transformed into a spectacular and unique visual experience, by exhibiting jaw-dropping living scenery and animation cast across giant LED screens to fully immerse the audience in Halloween Town. Banc of California Stadium has a multitude of transportation options at its doorstep. The stadium has ample parking at and around the Stadium, ride sharing options include a designated enhanced Lyft pick-up and drop-off location and for those looking to get their blood flowing on Halloween weekend, there are also permanent bicycle parking spaces around the Stadium and Expo Park. In addition to those options, fans of this event can easily hop aboard the Metro Expo Line which drops you off at the Expo Park/USC Station which is just steps away from Banc of California Stadium. The health and safety of fans remain a top priority by the organizers of the event. The teams involved with this event will follow the guidance of the LA County Department of Public Health to create a safe environment during this COVID-19 period. Once final guidelines are established by local health officials, updates will be provided on the Banc of California Stadium website. 05.13.21 | PASADENA WEEKLY 13

Maryilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr. are amoung several featured guests perfoming at the Sierra Summer Concert series July 10 to Sept. 11.

Pasadena Pops returns to the Arboretum By Pasadena Weekly Staff

P

rincipal Pops Conductor Michael Feinstein and the Pasadena POPS are slated to return to the Los Angeles County Arboretum for the 2021 Sierra Summer Concert Series. The five shows, set for July 10 to Sept. 11, are for fully vaccinated audiences. The series will feature guests such as Thelma Houston, Billy Davis Jr. and Marilyn McCoo, Liz Callaway and Jordan Donica. Entry to all Pasadena Pops concerts will require proof of receiving a fully completed COVID-19 vaccine at least two weeks prior to the concert date. The Pasadena Pops outdoor concert setting at the Arboretum is designed with round table seating, allowing ample distance between tables, plus an expansive lawn area for socially distanced seating on blankets and low back chairs. The venue plans to limit capacity this summer, too. Feinstein kicks off the summer series on July 10 with “The Road to Motown,” honoring the Supremes’ Mary Wilson, who was originally slated to perform before her recent passing. Wilson’s “Mississippi Sister” Thelma Houston will pay tribute to the legend and celebrate the greatest hits of the Motown era with the Fifth Dimension’s Billy Davis Jr. & Marilyn McCoo, and the Motown singing group, Spectrum. The music of Fleetwood Mac hits the stage July 24 with special guest Landslide performing songs such as “Rhiannon,” “Don’t Stop” and “Go Your Own Way” for “Fleetwood Mac: A Tribute.” Feinstein takes the stage as soloist on Aug. 14 for “Michael Feinstein Sings: Sinatra’s Songbook.” Returning this year on Aug. 28 is the “Classical Mystery Tour,” which brings the music of the Beatles to life. Feinstein returns to the podium to close the season on Sept. 11 with “100 Years of Broadway,” featuring songs from each decade. Hamilton’s Jordan Donica and Emmy-winner Liz Callaway are scheduled to appear. “The feeling of anticipation and joy bubbling up in all of us is palpable as we prepare to return to the experience of sharing live music,” Feinstein said. “Personally, for me, I have missed the connection of creating acoustic sound with an audience present, because as grateful as I am for virtual music-making, it is simply not the same as hearing live music played by a symphony in a beautiful natural setting. I know I can speak confidently for our orchestra when I say that we have missed you, and we will perform with everything we’ve got. We’re going to have a brilliant season.” Grounds open for picnicking and dining at 5:30 p.m. and performances begin at 7:30 p.m. The venue offers pre-ordered gourmet box dinners for onsite pickup just steps from their table or a variety of food truck options. The Arboretum is located at 301 N. Baldwin Avenue, Arcadia. Subscribers may purchase prepaid onsite parking at the Arboretum, and all concertgoers can purchase guaranteed parking at Santa Anita Park, with complimentary nonstop shuttle service to the Arboretum’s main entrance. Single tickets start at $25. Season subscriptions and single tickets are on sale and are available by calling the box office at 626-793-7172, online at pasadenasymphony-pops.org or at the Arboretum on concert days.
