REMAIN VIGILANT
President Trump, who in his struggles to explain why he downplayed the deadly coronavirus for two months as his administration failed to come up with a robust testing plan, has resorted to blaming his predecessor, Barack Obama, among others. He now blames President Obama for failing to develop a test for a disease that would not come into existence until three years after he left office. Nice try! On top of this, it appears that a three-year Republican intelligence study that was just published mirrors the Robert Mueller investigation. Despite calls from President Trump to disband it, the study reinforces the fact that Russia invaded our election and Trump and his team welcomed Russian assistance. The Republican study stresses that we remain vigilant against the threat of interference from hostile foreign actors. Where does this leave President Trump’s “conspiracy theory” that it actually was Ukraine? I believe that this idea was also supported by William Barr and Trump’s team. What kind of irresponsible, incompetent, foolhardy government are the Republicans running? ~DR. RICHARD FRENCH PASADENA
Massive slaughterhouse closures are driving US consumers to plant-based meat products, as sick workers pay the price. Tyson Foods, JBS USA, and Smithfield Foods, the largest meat processors, have closed 17 plants, devastating rural communities and threatening the nation’s meat supply. Production is already down by 25 percent. In reaction, US sales of plant-based meats surged by 265 percent, according to consumer data group Nielsen. Shares of Beyond Meat, a prominent plant-based meat brand, rallied by 60 percent. A Washington Post investigation found that coronavirus outbreaks in more than 48 US meat packing plants have sickened at least 3,300 workers and killed 17. The companies failed to provide adequate protective gear to the workers and forced some with COVID-19 symptoms to keep working. USA Today reports that more than 150 of US’s largest plants operate in counties with the highest rate of coronavirus infection. In addition to the generally accepted consumer health argument for avoiding animal food products, the pandemic has now added the worker health element. Production of plant-based meats requires much less labor and allows for ample physical distancing. We can all support the switch to healthy food on our next visit to our supermarket. ~ VICTOR CASTANZA VIA EMAIL
PLAY IT WISE
This is our community and we must endeavor to protect it. Wearing non-medical masks when we’re out and about doing our essential trips could help slow the transmission of COVID-19 when combined with physical distancing and hand hygiene. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), COVID-19 is primarily transmitted through droplets and contact. Under the right circumstances, normal breathing could propel droplets up to approximately three feet and sneezing to approximately 20 feet horizontally. Wearing a non-medical mask offers some filtration, as well as a reminder to not touch your nose and mouth. We do NOT need an N95 or surgical mask to be protected out in public — especially since we should be six feet away from each other anyway. Leave the medicalgrade masks to our health care workers who are at the highest risk due to their close proximity and constant exposure to patients. As of this moment, we don’t have enough masks and we must make sure that our health care workers are adequately protected so they can continue to take care of us. Also, play it wise! Continue to support the quarantine and religiously practice physical distancing and hand hygiene. Avoid touching your face, cough and sneeze into your arm and have a healthy lifestyle to support your immune system. Let’s continue to protect each other. ~ LAUREEN LOPEZ-BERRY VIA EMAIL

•HUTCHINSON REPORT• BY EARL OFARI HUTCHINSON
SHOW BLACK BUSINESSES THE MONEY!
A
n estimated 90 percent of minority businesses did not get a nickel from the SBA’s Payroll Protection Program (PPP). For black-owned businesses, the number is even worse, with 95 percent receiving no funding. In several informal polls on my Facebook pages I asked: “Do you know of any black-owned business that got a COVID-19 stimulus SBA Payroll Protection Program loan?” A handful of people said yes, but most said no. Some expressed optimism that the shutoff of money to black businesses might change with the House passage of an added $3 trillion stimulus package. However, that hope was guarded and cautious. At first glance, the abysmally low numbers seemed ridiculous. Trump, congressional leaders and treasury officials loudly pledged that small businesses were a prime target of the aid program. There was a litany of much publicized online workshops and town halls on where and how to apply for funding. Many banks announced that they had funds and encouraged businesses to apply. House Democrats sweetened the pot by prying $60 billion out of the loan package for minority banks. Yet, the number of black business people who got money has barely budged. There is much justified finger-pointing at the SBA, treasury officials, corporate heads and bank lobbyists for lax oversight, few rules on who could get the money, and for earmarking far too much in loans to major corporations. There is equally justified anger at banks for tossing up a mountain of paperwork, tax and business filing documents, and account requirements that small business owners had little chance of hurdling. Then there was the muddle, confusion and constant changing edicts about how the money could be used and what if any of it had to be paid back. Little has changed except the desperation of countless numbers of near penniless, distressed small black business owners. Overall, the estimated 2.5 million black-owned businesses make up almost one-third of the 8 million minority-owned businesses in the United States. The clock is ticking on the future survival of these businesses. There is still no clear timetable in many states, counties and cities for when shelter in place rules will end. Even then, there is no guarantee that businesses will be able to quickly open their doors, and when they do that their customers will be back. Many have already closed. Over 100,000 small businesses in early May had reportedly closed permanently. Almost certainly, a significant number of them were black-owned businesses. The worst-case estimate is that a quarter to one-third of black businesses could go under without rapid and dramatic financial intervention from government agencies. This means flipping the script on what is considered a “priority” business. This label has been almost uniformly slapped on major businesses. It must be applied to small businesses. Streamline the paperwork required and make an iron-clad guarantee that the loan is truly “forgivable.” Making funds immediately available for small businesses is vital to countering the inherent ideological and structural tilt toward big corporations that was built into the relief aid package. Black businesses have long been an especially endangered breed when it came to getting a dime out of banks and the government. The reasons are well documented: the lack of credit and a proven business track record; few resources; little expertise; and an absence of cozy business connections with banks. Then there is the dizzying gauntlet of wage and tax documents and filings needed to qualify for a loan. Much of the work is done online and that means having a computer, computer access and computer skills to wade through the cyber paperwork. Countless surveys by business groups, federal regulators and watchdog groups have produced reams of figures to show that despite the PR lip service lenders pay to wanting to loan to small businesses, the paltry number of loans they actually make to small, minority-owned businesses have remained frozen over the past decade. Black businesses have been a needed engine for employment, wealth building and financial security for many African Americans, many of whom have served as showpieces for black economic achievement and independence. The colossal failure of COVID-19 relief packages to make the survival of black and minority businesses the priority has been yet another monumental coronavirus tragedy. Time is running out for many black businesses. Show them the money. n Earl Ofari Hutchinson is an author and political analyst. He is the author of “COVID POLITICS—Trump’s Deadly Game” (Amazon). CITY BUSINESS COMMUNITY SLOWLY ADJUSTS AS NURSING HOME COVID-19 DEATHS REMAIN A PROBLEM BY KEVIN UHRICH
C
ity health officials spent much of a recent weekend doing virtual inspections of local nursing care facilities, which have become hotbeds for coronavirus infections. “Although a number of our inspections have been done virtually with a team of people and someone inside the facility with a tablet, this is a practice to keep the inspectors safe, and it allows them to inspect,” City Manager Steve Mermell told the online news magazine Pasadena Now. But on Monday, it became clear that more needs to be done, with city Health Officer Dr. Ying-Ying Goh telling the Pasadena City Council that residents and patients of those facilities account for 62 of the 69 deaths attributed to COVID-19. Those numbers rose to 64 and 71 by Tuesday morning, with both of those unidentified people dying at undisclosed Pasadena long-term care facilities. ”If the virus is essentially confined to nursing homes, then not only are the closures of all ‘non-essential’ businesses and stay-at-home orders inappropriate, but the spread of the novel coronavirus outside of these facilities is minuscule.” Erika Foy, a vice president with the Madison Heights Neighborhood Association, wrote in a letter to the council. “Knowing these statistics raises two very important questions: What are we doing to protect the population most vulnerable to infection, and why are we subjecting the rest of the city to economic disaster if it’s not completely necessary? What would Pasadena’s COVID-19 infection rate look like if long-termcare facilities were measured independently and not averaged in with the general population?” Foy wrote. At its weekly virtual meeting Monday, the council discussed the results of the city’s second week of soft openings for so-called non-essential businesses, with retailers allowed to conduct highly restrictive curbside sales a second week for the first time since closing on March 16, and recreational facilities, such as the Rose Bowl running, jogging and walking loop, along with tennis and pickle ball courts, golf courses, and the city’s archery range and casting pond, opening to people wearing masks and keeping six feet apart, per the city’s social distancing protocols. During the meeting, city Planning Director David Reyes said the city identified 1,069 business eligible to open for limited sales, with Reyes and other officials actually visiting 510 of those locations. At 103 businesses — 63 considered “essential” and 40 “non-essential,” Reyes said that 10 of the 40 allowed people inside their shops, which is forbidden. Two others did not enforce face covering regulations. No one was cited, but the owners were told to enforce the rules, Reyes said. “We find that curbside retail is still very difficult in providing a real motivation for for a business to operate,” Reyes told the council. “It’s been a challenge because, while it does help, it’s still extremely limited.” Reyes said he held a webinar last week at which 120 business people

participated. “It’s important that we start thinking about the next steps,” Reyes said. The council’s ED Tech Committee was set to meet today, May 21, and discuss such ideas as closing off streets, alleys and parking lots to allow outdoor dining once Gov. Gavin Newsom declares the start of Stage 2 of easing restrictions. “I think rather than rest on our laurels, we really need to redouble our efforts to come up with concrete plans that demonstrate our support for the community, especially the business community,” said Councilman Steve Madison. Dr. Ying-Ying Goh Goh said she has ordered “aggressive testing” be undertaken at local nursing facilities. As a result, the city is seeing more cases, but the curve is flattening, “so you’ll see some jumps sometimes and they represent individuals who are asymptomatic who were previously infected and just weren’t found.” But, Goh said, “Even with those increases and bumps we are seeing pretty flat (numbers of) cases, and from those indicators we are in a pretty good position. … I really worry about the drawing in of people from outside Pasadena” with relaxation of the city’s Safer at Home protocols. On April 12 Goh issued rules designed to stem coronavirus outbreaks in longterm care facilities. Her orders directed those operations to follow US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), state public health and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid guidelines, Pasadena Now reported. The guidelines include limiting entry of individuals into facilities, requiring symptom screening for all employees prior to work, suspending communal dining and activities, separating patients with COVID-19 from those who do not have the virus, and proper use of personal protective equipment. Goh has written a report for the council on the nursing home situation which was supposed to be discussed by the council Monday. The report will be submitted sometime this week. n

ouse Democrats have proposed a $3 trillion coronavirus aid package — the Healthy and Economic Recovery Omnibus Emergency Solutions (HEROES) Act — which would extend sweeping financial support to state and local governments, hospitals, businesses, families, individuals and frontline workers. Congresswoman Judy Chu of Pasadena summarized the Democrats’ position: “We cannot afford to wait, because people are in urgent need right now.” The bill seeks to establish a $200 billion “Heroes Fund” which would finance hazard pay for frontline workers and incentivize the recruitment of health care employees to “secure the workforce needed to fight the public health crisis.” Significant funds would also be allocated to ramp up the country’s ability to track and test for the virus. “We can’t have a healthy economy without healthy workers, so the bill commits another $75 billion for testing and tracing so that we can implement a science-based approach to safely opening our country,” Chu explained. “A lot of people are asking if the HEROES Act is too big, if we overreached as Democrats,” said Congressman Jimmy Gomez, whose Congressional District includes Eagle Rock and Highland Park, during a call with reporters. “My response is this: When your house is on fire, you want as many firetrucks at your house putting out that fire as possible.” The HEROES Act is a massive bill, certainly in terms of scope but also as a document, containing more than CONTINUED ON PAGE 8

STUFFED PANDAS AND BLOW-UP DOLLS HOW RESTAURANTS IN OTHER STATES ARE HELPING DINERS MAINTAIN DISTANCE BY ADAM K. RAYMOND
A
s lockdown orders lift across the country, restaurants are reopening their dining rooms to a world that’s markedly different than it was two months ago. Along with masked servers and customers — and tables that have been moved into streets and parking lots — indoor seating in most restaurants will be limited to a fraction of the space’s capacity. And some restaurants are coming up with novel ways to fill what remains. In Ohio, Governor Mike DeWine’s reopening orders stated that restaurants must space tables six feet apart or install physical barriers. The breakfast spot Twisted Citrus is gearing up for its May 21 opening by hanging shower curtains between tables. “Six feet between tables would have limited us to maybe eight to ten tables, which financially would not have made it worthwhile to open back up for us,” co-owner Kim Shapiro told CNN. As Shapiro acknowledged, restaurants still need to feel warm and welcoming, despite all the protective measures. Shower curtains, she said, allow diners to still see each other, a key part of going out to eat. Dante Boccuzzi, who owns several restaurants in Ohio, told Cleveland.com that he’ll use plexiglass to create barriers between tables when his businesses reopen. “My plan is to create, basically, a dining cubicle,” he said. “It’s not a foolproof safety measure, but I think it’s more for comfort. This way, people can sit down in their own cubicle and relax, and they don’t need to worry about a guy sneezing, even if he’s six feet away.” Diners patronizing the Inn at Little Washington, a three-star Michelin restaurant in Virginia, won’t have to worry about the mannequins sitting next to them coughing or sneezing. The restaurant is complying with mandates to reduce half its capacity by filling the dinerless portion of its seats with mannequins that have been costumed (with the help of a local theater company) to resemble 1940s partygoers. If the whole thing weren’t creepy enough, servers will apparently be asked to wait on the lifeless diners, serving them drinks and engaging in idle, unrequited chitchat. Sadly, the waiters will not be tipped for their services. A similar (but much cuter) scene is playing out at Bangkok’s Maison Saigon, where stuffed panda bears are occupying some of the restaurant’s seats to ensure humans stay safely distant. Paula Starr Melehes, owner of South Carolina’s Open Hearth, has reserved ten seats for blow-up dolls in her restaurant. Melehes told WTHR that the dolls — a “G-rated” model she ordered from Amazon — have attracted local attention and brought in new customers, including some who harbor impure thoughts. “I might even kiss one of those dolls before the night’s over,” customer Rob McCarter told the TV station. “My grandson told me they look kind of creepy,” Melehes told WYFF. “But I think when people walk in, they’re going to laugh.” n

1,800 pages. Republicans were quick to dismiss it as partisan. After the bill was announced on May 12 US Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina declared the package “dead on arrival.” Senate Majority Whip John Thune of South Dakota called it “a messaging exercise from House Democrats… an effort to try to create talking points for the 2020 election.” Republican hostility to the bill’s gargantuan price tag reflects something deeper than standard-fare partisanship — it points to the fundamental difference in the way both parties have chosen to address the crisis. Democrats would rather spend big and now, hoping that by pumping emergency aid into the country it will staunch economic bleeding and help suppress the spread of the virus. Republicans prefer a wait-andsee approach. “I don’t think we have yet felt the urgency of acting immediately,” said Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell in response to the bill. “That time could develop, but I don’t think it has yet.” The HEROES Act would also send nearly $1 trillion in cumulative aid to cities and states, helping local governments stay afloat amid devastating revenue losses that have been compounded by the cost of combating the virus. The bill would also initiate a second round of direct stimulus payments — another $1,200 for individuals, up to $6,000 per family. It would also extend the $600 weekly increase to unemployment benefits through January 2021. In addition to direct stimulus payments, homeowners and renters would receive relief in the form of $175 billion directly targeted to rent payments and mortgages. These funds would be prioritized based on income. Student loan debt up to $10,000 would also be canceled for all borrowers, leaving millions debt-free. The popular Payroll Protection Program, which helps nonprofits and small businesses to keep employees on payroll, would be buffered, while the struggling US Postal Service would receive $25 billion in aid. Several billions more would be spent to help ensure “safe elections” and an accurate census. Democratic Congressman Brad Sherman of Woodland Hills praised the comprehensiveness the bill, but also found something critical missing: adequate funding for COVID-19 research. “We are providing many, many trillions to bandage the wounds this disease is inflicting on our people and our economy,” Sherman told reporters over the phone. “But we have to beat the disease, and less than one-tenth of one percent of the money in this bill — and prior bills — has gone to the NIH (National Institutes of health for [COVID-19] medical research. We need a treatment, and ultimately, of course ,we need a vaccine.” n 8 PASADENA WEEKLY | 05.21.20
FIGHTING BACK
A COMMUNITY ORGANIZATION HELPING RESIDENTS WITHOUT HOMES PARTNERS WITH ACADEMICS TO CREATE A GRASSROOTS HAND-WASHING INFRASTRUCTURE
BY CERIANNE ROBERTSON, FRANCOIS BAR AND GRAHAM DIGUISEPPI
T
he day California Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered the closure of dine-in restaurant operations, gyms, fitness centers and movie theaters because of the coronavirus, staff members of the Los Angeles Community Action Network, a grassroots human rights organization comprised of poor and houseless Angelenos, scouted the streets of Skid Row to check on the hand-washing stations the city had installed, phones in hand. General Dogon, one of the staff, stopped at one station and pumped the foot pedal to turn it on. Turning to face his colleague Monique Noel’s phone camera, he said: “The problem is, there is no water.” In Downtown Los Angeles’ Skid Row, an estimated 4,757 people experience houselessness on a given night, and approximately 2,783 of them live unsheltered on the street. These residents cannot easily follow the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s advice to stay at home and wash their hands frequently. City officials said they installed 250 hand-washing stations across the city, but by Dogon’s count on March 16, the day of the governor’s order, only a few had been placed in Skid Row. Several of the stations were dirty and lacked soap, fresh water or both. Before COVID-19 became a crisis in LA, we — a PhD student studying media power and cities, a PhD student studying interventions for youth experiencing homelessness, and a professor studying social and economic impacts of information technologies — were engaged in participatory research projects with the Los Angeles Community Action Network (LA CAN) and other students in a USC-Annenberg graduate seminar on “Research, Practice and Social Change.” Recognizing the immense threat that COVID-19 poses to residents of informal settlements, this community-university collaborative began building a grassroots network of DIY hand-washing stations. The hope is that others may learn from our story and provide rapid response to support houseless communities in their own neighborhoods and cities. We believe our story demonstrates the power and importance of community ownership and organizations that build grassroots networks over time. Switching Plans The idea was born at a meeting of LA CAN’s Human Rights Strategy Committee where participants were discussing the impact of COVID-19 on the organization’s “Dirty Divide” campaign, a decades-long effort to advocate for improvements to Skid Row’s inadequate public health infrastructure. That led to a conversation about how the Congolese fought the Ebola crisis — with sanitation stations — and how to emulate this in Skid Row. LA CAN shared the idea with the USC team on what would be the first of many Zoom videoconference calls over the following days. The LA CAN/USC collaborative researched a number of DIY hand-washing station models, experimented with building prototypes and got five pilot stations on the streets within the first few days, with over a dozen more ready to be deployed soon. The group is also mapping the DIY stations, as well as existing sanitation spots and hand washing stations newly installed by the city. For inspiration, the collaborative assembled a scrapbook of examples from around the world showing how people have improvised hand-washing stations. The “dragon station,” our modified version of a DIY Camp Sink, is a community favorite. For about $50-$70 worth of materials, this turns two buckets with lids, a pump, a hose and some sort of basin — and, in our case, a plastic dragon repurposed as a faucet and soap dispenser — into a mechanism that takes clean water from one bucket and disposes dirty water into the other. In comparison, the commercial hand-washing stations we researched cost over $400 and were in high demand, taking a minimum of four to six weeks to ship. Community-centered Design The city’s top-down approach was to drop off hand-washing stations that need to be periodically refilled with soap and water, but now city workers are staying #SaferAtHome and the stations have run dry. After touring some of the city’s empty sanitation stations on April 3, US District Judge David O. Carter concluded that “the sanitation facilities in Skid Row continue to be inadequate to meet the exigencies of the COVID-19 health crisis.” In contrast, the LA CAN/USC group is attempting to build a bottom-up grassroots net-
work. Friends and supporters make DIY hand-washing stations. They’re not quite as slick as the city’s but are arguably prettier, as they’re hand-painted with designs and instructions. LA CAN places the hand-washing stations with street community leaders that the organization knows from its years of organizing work in the neighborhood. These leaders maintain the stations, explain how they work to other Skid Row residents, share knowledge about safe practices and generally support their community. To refill the stations, they call on nearby supporters including housed neighbors and adjacent buildings and stores, some of whom also provide liquid soap and sanitizer — a grassroots networks in action. Beyond Skid Row Mutual aid is flourishing beyond Skid Row, too. Artist Jessica Kendall-Bar illustrated a how-to guide for building a hand-washing station. And folks from local groups including Street Watch LA, Human Rights Watch LA and Mutual Aid LA lend a hand in building, distributing and maintaining these stations. People from around the city are also contributing to the hand-washing station map — not only identifying the sanitation locations, but also providing updates on the availability of soap and water at each station. The icons for each station turn green if they are fully functional, red if they have run dry and yellow if they have water but something else is wrong. They are blue when their status is unknown; there may be a station there but no one has checked it out. The participants and supporters from beyond Skid Row are a mix of people from LA CAN’s organizing and human rights networks and people from the USC network, highlighting what we see as an advantage of a collaboration between community organizers and academic researchers. The group divides tasks strategically among the participants. LA CAN staff take the lead on community outreach and station implementation, drawing on their existing relationships in and knowledge of the neighborhood. Besides building and testing prototype stations, the USC team’s contributions are mostly virtual: building the map and making content for the fundraising campaign via LA CAN’s social media platforms, always taking cues from the experts at the community organization. To create lasting change, we believe grassroots organizations and academics must work together to understand obstacles, design and test practical solutions, and develop community practices around those solutions. Forging and strengthening these relationships over time means that when a new crisis strikes, we can be ready to hit the ground running. n Cerianne Robertson is a PhD student in Communication at USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, Francois Bar is a professor of Communication and Spatial Sciences at USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, and Graham DiGuiseppi is a PhD. student in the Department of Children, Youth and Families at the USC Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work. t’s Saturday, I’m in line at the Pasadena Farmer’s Market. In line? Yes, like any busy market these days, access is monitored and timed to avoid crowding and allow for proper social distancing. Before you pass by the entrance table with the huge bottle of Purell you will likely be standing in the sun on the long sidewalk in front of the high school, spaced six feet apart from your masked neighbors, waiting for the next round of entrances. My girlfriend is parking the car and joins me just as the line moves us into the first lane of the market. The garlic spread guy is out of garlic spread, but I get some hummus instead. The sourdough baguettes seem a bit more resistant to the touch today, but I get one anyway. The fresh fish folks used to have a guy shucking huge Pacific oysters at a dollar apiece, but no more. Cauliflower, broccoli, tomatoes, a few bags of fresh basil and we’re done. Thank God the Farmers’ Market has stayed open, but like everything else these days, it’s not quite the same. We end up at Stater Bros. on Washington Boulevard to somewhat randomly round out the shopping trip. As we wheel out of the parking lot, my girlfriend realizes that we don’t have mozzarella for the caprese salad she’s scheming over. “What about Roma Market?” It’s her idea. I haven’t been to Roma for a while. Living an enforced keto lifestyle, I associate the place with my distant

longing for exotic pasta shapes and rich tomato sauce. For me, another lost world. On weekends, there are boxes of fresh produce outside the entrance of Roma Market, and there are several folks perusing the selection as we arrive. Inside, the place is buzzing. There is a line to the back for the cashier and another line along the back wall for the deli counter. The omnipresent and indomitable owner, Rosario Mazzeo, 81, is bussing empty shopping carts and restocking shelves when he isn’t seated next to the door of the backroom holding court with his regular admirers. I get in line for the counter and manage to order three balls of fresh mozzarella. Of course, I can’t help but notice the quickly diminishing pile of pink paper-wrapped packages stacked to the side, in front of the counter. It seems everyone in the store has snatched at least one, if not several. If you’re not sure what these mysterious pink parcels are, allow me to introduce you to The Sandwich. Advertised on the market’s outdoor sign, The Sandwich — like its inventor, Rosario Mazzeo — is a local icon. I hadn’t had The Sandwich in a while and my girlfriend had not only never tried one, she was otherwise unaware of its hallowed status. Park, the trademark pink paper is manically torn away and — all keto prescriptions be damned — my girlfriend quickly examines The Sandwich before ripping into it. This is not an overstuffed hero. Nor is it a sub, a grinder or a muffaletta. Its profile is rather slim and modest. After several huge voracious bites, she pauses before quietly gasping and solemnly pronouncing, “This tastes like Italy.” Apparently a combination of salami, mortadella, capicola and provolone, The Sandwich is dressed only with a lashing of olive oil across the face of the fresh Italian roll. I’m tempted to grab some mustard, but the oil, the unctuous fat of the mortadella and the subtle heat of the capicola all combine into a uniquely simple and satisfying bite. At $5.50 it’s also a local lunch bargain. For an extra buck you can get The Sandwich on a fresh ciabatta roll, but I prefer the sharp, crusty crunch of the Italian. Either way, this is a legendary local culinary experience. Only in in Pasadena. As to the precise composition of The Sandwich, feel free to indulge in a forensic dissection, but the actual combination of ingredients will never be disclosed. “Can I have the recipe for The Sandwich?” I’m back on a relatively quiet Tuesday afternoon. I’m confronting Rosario Mazzeo in the far back corner of the store as he restocks the small but interesting selection of Italian wines. He squints at me with a flash of vaguely derisive disbelief at my impertinence before curtly and clearly saying “No.” He then suggests that I might enjoy a bottle of Forte Ambrone Vino Rosso, which I now feel obligated to throw in my basket. (Of course, he was right. I did enjoy it and came back for another bottle.) Mazzeo arrived in Pasadena from Messina, Sicily in 1950 to help his uncle who had opened the small market four years earlier. However, it was Mazzeo who began importing high-quality products from Italy for the store. He gestures around the shelves, “I bring all the merchandise here myself…” How has business been since the lockdown? “Very, very busy … my customers come from all over. Santa Barbara, Anaheim!” The charming cashier, Maria Gurrola, has been at the market 22 years and she points out Mazzeo’s right-hand man Frederico Gutierrez, who has worked at the store for 39 years. Things don’t change here. “I’m here seven days a week…” Mazzeo proclaims, “If you want to do something right…” He again gestures to the room. “… and my customers want to see me here.” There is no question he is the star of the show. I catch him wheeling a wooden box of the tell-tale pink parcels to the meat counter. He confirms that he himself makes The Sandwiches fresh every morning, usually with the help of two assistants. When asked how many he sells in a day, he cites an incredibly high number that corroborates Maria’s answer to the same question. He then quickly asks me not to disclose the actual count. “Can I say ‘many, many?'” He nods. Roma Market sells many, many sandwiches every day. (Many, many hundreds …) My rediscoveries of Roma Market, of Rosario Mazzeo, and of The Sandwich have restored my faith in the changeless simplicity of quality, reliability, and loyalty. The Old Normal is still alive. Rosario Mazzeo and The Sandwich are living local treasures that should be savored now and honored forever.

D
ecades ago, when Nayan Shah reached for some old medical reports in a Chicago library, he could have hardly imagined that it would make him a popular scholar during a global pandemic. Now living in sunny Pasadena, Shah has not only been featured as a talking head expert in the PBS five-part documentary series, “Asian Americans,” but also in national publications, one of them Time magazine, which have quoted him. Since last week’s airing of the PBS “Asians Americans,” Shah has been inundated with messages from schools, old friends and people who just wanted to share their reflections. “Don’t ever think that PBS doesn’t matter,” Shah said during an interview Saturday. The series, which continues to be available for streaming, is how “America is in Asia and Asia is in America … a way of showing a mosaic of Asian American experiences,” which is too often “one of enduring discrimination and exploitation and being categorized as exotic,” he said. Sheltering in place on a tree-lined neighborhood with his partner, Shah hasn’t had it bad. Before the COVID-19 shutdown, you might have seen him at the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center where he used to go to swim three days a week. Yet, as a Southeast Asian Indian American, he’s experienced xenophobia. “I grew up in a neighborhood that was multiethnic, but predominately white,” he recalls. At the time of the Iranian Revolution, “I discovered things I never understood or knew about some of my fellow students in junior high.” Once he was joyously trampolining at the gym and the other students began chanting “Down with the Shah.” It was a joke, but one that came from “anger they were feeling about the hostage crisis” of 1979 and 1980. Born in Washington, DC and raised in Maryland, Shah found US history boring, but a trip to the United Kingdom and South Africa before entering grad school in Illinois made him question what he knew about history and himself. In South Africa in the 1980s, he learned “when and how and by what means I was able to deflect it to subvert it and where those racial lines were non-negotiable,” he said. His experience was very different from someone who was African American or white American. For Chinese or Japanese ethnic groups from the US or the UK, in South Africa, “you were literally an honorary white.” He learned that “those lines were very durable and it shaped where I could travel and where I could live.” In Chicago, he learned just how interesting but overlooked AsianAmerican history was. Back in the US, Shah was searching for a dissertation topic at the University of Chicago when he first reached for the reports on health and hygiene in San Francisco’s Chinatown. He thought they would be dry scientific commentary, but recalls, “I couldn’t believe the level of nonscientific information that was being given,” information that Shah characterizes as “vitriolic.” After he earned his PhD in 1995, Shah was an associate professor at UC, San Diego when that dissertation was published through the UC Press in 2001: “Contagious Divides: Epidemics and Race in San Francisco’s Chinatown.” He also published “Stranger Intimacy: Contesting Race, Sexuality and the Law in the North American West” (UC Press) in 2011. Shah moved to Pasadena in 2013 when he became a professor at the USC Department of American Studies and Ethnicity. Now, with a vibrant Chinese-American population in the San Gabriel Valley, he has a front-row seat to the troubling xenophobia linked to COVID-19. Shah

finds it troubling that we see Asian and Pacific American doctors and nurses being attacked. What he discovered in his research that “there’s an argument about Asians being foreign or invisible,” but that’s part of “a sustained political and cultural project to ignore all the US involvement in Asia — trade and influence, and gathering stuff from Asia, culturally.” You can clearly see that locally with such things as the camellia forest at Descanso Gardens. Shah hopes that the PBS “Asian Americans” will become a platform to launch more documentaries that cover so many other stories. Already, one of those stories has been COVID-19 and anti-Asian hate incidents. According to Shah, the portrayal of the Chinese people as a threat to US as a nation and a society is nothing new. In pandemics, people want to look for a source, but also an end. “The end is always a fictional end, an idea of social closure. That doesn’t really mean that no one else is getting this infection.” What we really need to be looking at, he said, is “What kind of society are we building?” He doesn’t think we’ll be going back to things as they were preCOVID-19. To combat racism and hate crimes, “We need to be honest about the history of where things come from and why they’re there. We need to have a lot of honesty about the true contributions and how interwoven they are in our culture and society,” he said. Otherwise, he continued, “We are in peril of being convinced and coerced by various dissolutionist ideologies that are based on fear or fantasies rather than reality.” n
