Tracy Olson was just finishing his studies at ASU as he transitioned from a job in construction to a career in education when Barbara Bush reigned as the nation’s first lady. On April 18, he delivered a tribute to Bush over the PA system to the 560 students at Barbara Bush Elementary School, where he has been principal for eight years at the only school named in her honor outside Texas. Bush died April 17 at age 92. “She was a wonderful proponent of child literacy, and we look forward to carrying on her legacy,” said Olson, a product of its school system and a member of the last graduating class of the old Mesa High

Red Mountain High School junior Ryan Coats will travel to New Zealand this summer as part of Mesa’s Sister Cities program. “I still can’t believe it,” he said. “I’m just really excited for all the opportunities and experiences this is going to give me.” The program sends Mesa youth ambassadors to cities worldwide each summer to build international friendships and foster understanding and cooperation. Coats will head to Upper Hutt, New Zealand, at the end of May for three weeks. The Sister Cities movement became

Former Mountain View music teacher honored at concert classifieds

By Eric Newman Richard Rader, or Mr. Rader as he was best known, celebrated 51 years of teaching music in Mesa on April 6. Rader taught orchestra classes throughout Mesa, including Mountain View High School and Heritage Academy before retiring nearly five years ago. Former students, parents, family and friends gathered at Heritage Academy to play one last short concert directed by the beloved teacher who had a positive influence on thousands of students. During breaks, they shared memories. “I started teaching here in Mesa in 1963,” he said. “I was teaching fourth, fifth and sixth graders, and I wonder what happened to all of those kids sometimes. But, teaching and the kids have made my life important.”
Rader taught 10 of Sharon Snyder’s children. She said his teaching ability and flexibility with all skill levels was paramount in her kids’ musical development. He allowed students to improve and increased their interest in music. “Most teachers have a very rigid bar that they try to get them up and over,” Snyder said. “He just took people from where they were, worked with them, and made them feel the joy of music in the process. And that took them further than any sort of standardized goal or anything like that.” Heritage Academy graduate John Taylor played under Rader in the school orchestra. Rader so inspired him that he pursued a career in music instruction. He taught for nine years in Arizona.
Even as a music professional, Rader is still part of his family, and the two get together sporadically to jam or watch football – or both. “I know everybody here has had a special relationship with him in one form or another, and he’s just influenced me, and probably everyone else here, in so many ways,” Taylor said. “He played a big role in helping me decide what I wanted to do, answering all the questions I had and giving me support. Now I love Richard Rader conducts an orchestra of friends, family it; this is my life.” and former students. uary 2000 when her son was the frontrunner in the GOP presidential primary campaign. She entertained a crowd of nearly 600 parents and children and encouraged them to “turn off the TV once in a while” and read. “No matter what you want to be,” she advised them, “you have to know how to read.” She then sat down and read a story to them about a boy who helped a woman regain her lost memories. On April 18, the school had a moment of silence in honor of Bush and teachers spent a little time telling their classes about her. In addition, each class made a special scrapbook-like page that was bound and sent to the Bush family. Wilson also, on April 18, reflected on Bush, saying she’s glad she had come up with the idea to name a school in Mesa after her. Ironically, a subsequent school board named another elementary school after Wilson. It wanted to pay tribute to the onetime Iowa teacher’s extensive involvement in numerous civic and charitable organizations in Mesa that included 16 years on the school board. Wilson said she met Bush only briefly during the dedication, recalling, “She was very gracious with her time but she was on a very tight schedule so I didn’t have any chance to talk with her one-onone.” But Wilson said she will always remember her visit the day of the school’s dedication, noting, “She left a legacy of the importance of literacy, family and learning to read and those were values the people of Mesa hold close to them.” May 2018

Student...continued from page 1 a national effort when President Dwight D. Eisenhower proposed the People to People program at a White House conference in 1956. Today more than 2,700 U.S. cities in all 50 states are linked with cities in 150 countries. For more than a half a century, the Sister Cities program has broadened its area of focus from educational and cultural exchanges to include technical assistance, trade and economic development. Mesa joined the Sister City movement in 1981 with the creation of the Mesa Sister Cities Association. As a nonprofit organization, MSCA signed its first Sister City charter with Guaymas, Sonora, Mexico in 1981. Upper Hutt, New Zealand, followed in 1983, as did Caraz, Peru in 1989; Kaiping, China, in 1993; and Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada, in 1999. The program won’t stop with Coats’ trip. When he returns, a member of the host family will visit Mesa to have a similar experience. The youth ambassadors will meet Mayor John Giles and learn about the city of Mesa. They will also experience the Grand Canyon, Disneyland, a day at the beach, and a Diamondbacks game. The group will volunteer and take part in a community service project at a local food bank. As an ambassador in Upper Hutt, which has 40,000 residents, Coats will experience daily life, meet the governor and other city officials, and catch rays on scenic beaches. This will be Coats’ first intercontinental journey. “I’ve always wanted to travel,” he said
with a laugh. “This is kind of geeky, but when I’m bored in classes, I’ll look up like, ‘How much is it to go to Greece,’ and stuff like that.” At Red Mountain, Coats is involved in varsity swim, and clubs like the National Honor Society and Link Crew, a peer mentorship program. He’s also obtaining his private pilot license as an aviation explorer at Falcon Field. The unknown is unsettling to some people, but Coats finds it energizing. “I’m (most) excited to learn the culture and grow with someone I’ve never met before and their family,” he said. After both parts of the program are complete, Coats and the other ambassadors will continue to give back to Mesa with service, city projects and fundraisers. For information on the program or to follow Coats and the other ambassadors’ journeys, visit mesasistercities.org. Other student ambassadors are: • Echo Selman from AAEC Red Mountain, who will travel to Upper Hutt, New Zealand, with Coats. • Charlie Boyle and Nic Guerrero, both of Westwood High School, and Sydney Brown of Heritage Academy will visit Guaymas, Mexico. • Matthew Halfmann of Seton Catholic High School and Kylie Hunts-in-Winter of Arizona Connections Academy are heading to Kaiping, China. • Ellie Yar of AAEC Red Mountain will spend time in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada • Mckay Osborne of Heritage Academy, and Tara Ruhland of Westwood will head to Caraz, Peru.

Top 10 reasons to take kids to summer camp By Brian Presley For most people, summer camp is something they did for a couple weeks as a kid, but for many, it was more than that. As someone who has experienced summer camp as a camper and a counselor, I can tell you it will not only give the parents a rest, but can change a kid’s life for the better. Summer camp gave me the confidence to be a stay-at-home dad and to self-publish a book based on the games and activities that filled my summers. A website was created to promote the book but What to Do with the Kids is a big part of my professional life and reaches people from around the world. Summer camp was a great experience for me as a kid growing up in a government town and has created some lifelong friends and memories. With that in mind, here are my top 10 reasons you should send your kid to summer camp.
1. It gets them out of town
For kids living in a city, there aren’t many parks and the parks that are there are not very big and are usually crowded. If you’re lucky, there’s a swimming pool or splash pad nearby and for those living in a house, the backyard can get boring and if

Life skills are something that many kids learn without realizing it. The kids will learn teamwork and cooperation because they’ll be participating in a group or as “a cabin.” They may also pick up a few good habits. Parents have told me their kids would start helping to clear the table after meals and make their beds, at least for a little while. Summer camp is filled with activities that involve running, swimming, hiking and playing. There are also times when kids can just relax but the sign of a good camp experience is when the kids are tired but happy at the end of the day.

you live in a new house, chances are your backyard is the size of a postage stamp. Most summer camps are located outside cities and surrounded by trees near lakes or rivers. The air is cleaner, and the noise is all natural. It’s a nice change for kids whose only exposure to wildlife are ground squirrels, hummingbirds and javelina.
2. It gets them away from their family
Yes, you love them, and the kids love you too and it may sound cruel, but everyone can use a break at least once. Being away from home can also give kids an appreciation of what they have.

3. It gives them a sense of independence
For most kids, this will be the first time they travel anywhere without their parents and that can be exciting for them. There will be rules to follow, but it’s different when mom and dad aren’t around. They’ll be with other kids and chances are the counselors are not that much older because they are most likely high school or college age, so it won’t feel like they’re at home with their parents. For many kids, it’s like being paroled from the routine of home and school.
4. It exposes them to different people
Most summer camps attract kids of different races, religions and economic standing from different parts of the area and even from different cities. It provides an opportunity to meet and discover other kids regardless of their background.
Many summer camps have a “no electronics” policy and it’s a great way to help them realize they can live without it for a little while. Announcements are made in the dining hall live. There are no texts, emails or Snapchats, so messages are passed on to each other by actually speaking to another person. The only hi-tech item they should have is a flashlight.
10. It creates memories
As a camper and as a counselor, I learned a lot of new skills and a lot about myself and others at summer camp. There are people that I can picture exactly how they looked over 30 years ago and moments that have helped make me who I am today. There are a lot of private camps and camps that are operated by churches or nonprofit groups that can help you send your kids regardless of your financial situation. As a camper, my fees were subsidized so my parents could afford to send me, but when I was up there, I was just one of the kids.
5. They can be themselves
At school and with their friends, a lot of kids can feel the pressure of acting like everyone else, but a good camp program lets kids be themselves.
6. They can learn new skills

Madison Elementary School teacher Kate Copeland practices goat yoga with her students.
As Madison Elementary students gather on a grass field at Welcome Home Ranch in Gilbert, laughter fills the air. The kids, who are in Kate Copeland’s autism class, are enjoying goat yoga. Copeland, who incorporates yoga in her classroom to enhance her students’ educational and social experiences, reached out to the owners of Goat Yoga Arizona about bringing her students for a special field trip. They happily waived their fees so the students could take part in the class. As participants practice yoga poses, the trained goats join in the fun. April Gould and Sarah Williams are the masterminds behind the wellness craze. Gould is known as a “goat whisperer,” who trains the animals to interact with participants. Williams has taught yoga for more than 20 years. “My children attended Mesa Public Schools,” Williams said. “We wanted to give back to our community, and we saw a lot of smiles today.” Students with autism may experience sensory integration difficulties caused by environmental noise and light. Daily activity breaks help reduce anxiety. Copeland provides classroom movement time and tools such as breathing exercises and CosmicKidsYoga. “Breathing strategies and yoga help my students manage anxiety, and influence their moods and behavior in a

positive way,” Copeland shared. “Students can use these tools to self-regulate and cope with stressful situations.” The human-animal bond and its positive influences on health and wellbeing are widely documented. Their goat yoga experience helped students with autism improve communication and social skills. “When I learned about Goat Yoga Arizona, it made perfect sense to bring the two worlds together for my students,” Copeland said. As the session began, one student was wary of the baby goats. By the end of the class, she conquered her fears and became fast friends with the animals. “Watching the reactions of my students was my favorite part of this experience,” Copeland shared. “My students do not usually get to participate in these types of activities. They have been to the zoo, but to be able to enjoy something hands-on is a game changer.” After class, second-grader Rocco Attanaso proudly recited the names of various yoga poses, while his classmate demonstrated a perfectly executed tree position. “The goats are so soft,” Rocco explained. By Sarah Donahue Valley kids are conquering skateboarding under the direction of Mesa skate coach and former Mountain View High School student Matt Suncin. As the owner of The Sk8 Coach, which he founded in May 2016, Suncin offers private and group lessons, as well as skatepark tours, where he introduces children to facilities around the Valley. “It’s the best job I could ask for,” said the 23-year-old Suncin. “I go to work with a skateboard in my hand every day.” He coaches an average of 30 children per week. They are kids of all backgrounds and ages, with some skaters as young as 2. He has helped kids with autism and expressed how rewarding it is to witness them try new things, overcome their fears and succeed. Paige Heyn, 10, from Chandler, said that she likes skateboarding because it helps her try harder things without being scared. Falling is a primary concern. Before skating, all parents must sign a liability

waiver and students are required to wear helmets. Injuries, however, are unavoidable sometimes. “I have made peace that, at some point, she’s going to hurt herself, but you know, kids hurt themselves all the time,” said Tanya Heyn, Paige’s mother. Most kids, however, said they weren’t afraid of getting hurt. “I really don’t care about my body; I
just care about skateboarding,” replied 9-year-old Koston Eaton of Mesa. Koston has 15,500 followers on his Instagram, where he posts his skating videos. His family owns Mesa’s Kids That Rip (KTR). In November, Koston took first place in the Phoenix Skateboards Fall Jam competition for kids ages 9 to 12. Koston is the younger brother of
competitive teenage skateboarders Jett and Jagger Eaton, who are making names for themselves nationally as skateboarders. Suncin said that skateboarding teaches essential life lessons. “It teaches perseverance. It teaches you the right mindset for accomplishing goals,” Suncin said. Suncin was among the first group of skaters to attend KTR. He applied for a teaching job there when he was 15, after his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. His family could not afford lessons, so he decided to show kids how to skate. He is dedicated to helping children, as shown by his participation in the nonprofit Skate After School. Volunteers travel to schools with donated skateboard equipment to teach underserved youth of Phoenix. “Just like any sport, there’s always a coach that helps the younger generations come up,” Suncin said.

Nonprofit supports foster kids through mentoring and tutoring By Lynette Carrington Thousands of children in the Arizona foster care system need support in all areas of their lives. The nonprofit Arizonans for Children attempts to fill that void by providing vital services like free tutoring and mentoring for kids who are referred by caregivers or DES case managers. Mentors/tutors are background checked and highly trained, and remain with children for at least a year. “Even if a mentor only asks, ‘Have you done your homework?’ that is somebody in that child’s life holding them accountable for homework,” said Laura Pahules, Arizonans for Children’s executive director. “Their grades improve, their attendance improves, and magical things start happening in their lives. These are life lessons.” Tutor/mentors work on a variety of projects, depending on the needs assessed by caregivers and case managers. Whether it is educational, emotional or life skill training, tutor/mentors spend at least two hours each week assisting their child in developing these skills. According to Arizonans for Children statistics, last year more than 400 tutor/ mentor volunteers measured an 85 percent improvement in the grades of the children in the program. One of the 152 mentors/tutors is Monica Wilson, who is working with a teen who is aging out of the foster care system in May. May 2018
“It’s been amazing,” Wilson said. “Originally, I asked for a younger child – hopefully a girl – because I have two boys.” She perused the bios of children who needed help, and she was drawn to an older girl. “I said, ‘Yes,’ and ever since then I’ve spent quite a bit of time with her,” she explained. The pair works on strengthening communication and academic skills. Things have gone so well that Wilson’s mentee is moving in with her. “She recognizes she doesn’t want to go back to the life she had before, and she wants to continue to go to school,” Wilson said. “Her past life doesn’t define her now. She knows she’s a new person.” Prior to Arizonans for Children, Pahules worked in technology. As her children grew, her path changed. “I had volunteered with Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) for kids in foster care for years,” Pahules said. She sought work in the child welfare area and has been with Arizonans for Children since 2016. “I try to make sure we have an environment in all of our programs that is safe and nurturing and helps the kids heal,” Pahules explained. To volunteer as a mentor/tutor, or for more information, visit arizonansforchildren.org.

Recently, the gelato shop took home the gold medal at the Scottsdale Gelato festival for its new flavor, “Stupify.” With an ever-changing menu of gelato flavors, the Bergamaschis make sure to cater to every customer. “We are really the only thing out here in Mesa,” Bergamaschi said. “Everybody would go to Scottsdale and it’s nice because now they don’t have to drive all the way out there.”

By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski Aspiring chef Amelia Guerin was so impressed by a restaurant’s watermelon salad that she had to go home and put her own spin on it. “We made one with different ingredients and it tasted really, really good,” said Amelia, an 11-year-old student at Las Sendas Elementary School. “That’s how I came up with the recipe.” Amelia did such a great job that she was a finalist in Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona’s 2018 Walk On! Kids Cooking Challenge. As part of its effort to inspire kids to make healthier choices, in January, BCBSAZ invited kids ages 9 to 12 across the state to submit ideas for healthy side dish recipes. Recipes had to be original, include at least one fruit or vegetable and be able to be prepared in 20 minutes or less. She admits she just “threw some things together,” including watermelon, feta, olive oil and balsamic vinegar. But it worked.
“The balsamic vinegar may sound a little weird, but it really tastes good with the feta,” she said. “You get that sweet and salty flavor when you bite in – first, the watermelon, then the balsamic and feta.” For her recipe, she earned a Phoenix Suns gift set, an autographed Guy Fieri cookbook, and a professional chef shirt and hat. Amelia’s mother, Aimee, is proud of her daughter, who was making waffles as she spoke. “I love making waffles and I really like making smoothies,” Amelia said. “Those are my favorite. I was going to enter my fish tacos, until I found out I needed to make a side dish. “My fish tacos are healthy. It has corn and stuff.” Recipe submissions underwent a three-part scoring process. First, a nutrition specialist reviewed all the recipe submissions and chose the top five finalists based on each recipe’s level of nutrition. Then the top five finalists participated in a public event

at a Phoenix Suns home game, where game attendees had a chance to taste and vote for their favorite recipe. “It was really fun,” Aimee said about the Suns event. “She had such a good time, and everybody was really welcoming. It was really a good experience for everyone.” For the third part of the scoring process, videos of contestants discussing what makes their recipe so good were posted online for a public vote. The recipe that received the most points from all three scoring categories was declared the winner.

what’s cooking? By Jan D’Atri
Zucchini crust pizza with sautéed tomatoes and mushrooms
Move over, cauliflower pizza crust. I think zucchini crust pizza with sautéed tomatoes and mushrooms tops it by a mile! You will love the way this pizza crust cooks up. The big secret is to make sure you squeeze, squeeze, squeeze out the water from the shredded zucchini. Once you make the crust, load it up with any of your favorite pizza toppings.
Zucchini crust pizza (Yields: Two 8-inch pizzas) Zucchini crust ingredients: - 8 cups shredded zucchini, about 5-6 large zukes - 1-1/2 teaspoons salt, divided - 1 cup shredded parmesan (Parmesan Romano mix is great) - 1/2 cup flour - 1/4 cup yellow corn meal - 2 large cloves garlic, minced - 1 large shallot, minced - 2 large eggs, beaten - 1 teaspoon pepper
Zucchini pizza crust Preheat oven to 475 degrees. In a large bowl, toss the zucchini with 1 teaspoon coarse salt and set aside for 15 minutes. Squeeze the excess moisture out of the zucchini by wrapping it up in a clean tea towel or cheese cloth and wringing it out, discarding the water. Place the shredded zucchini back into a large bowl. Add fresh grated parmesan (or Parmesan Romano mix), flour, yellow corn meal, garlic, shallot, eggs, 1 teaspoon salt and pepper. With a large spoon, mix until well incorporated. Place parchment paper on two round, approx. 12-inch pizza pans (cutting paper to fit pan) and spray with cooking oil. Using your fingers, spread the zucchini crust mixture on each pan to form circles about 8 inches in diameter and about 1/2” thick. Bake for approximately 15 minutes or until the crust starts to brown.

Remove from oven, add toppings and return to oven for 7-8 minutes or until cheese has melted and toppings are cooked.
Jan's zucchini crust pizza toppings - 1/2 to 2/3 cup pizza sauce (I prefer Trader Joe’s Pizza Sauce) - 1 cup shredded mozzarella - 1 16 oz. package fresh white mushrooms, sliced - 2 tablespoons butter - 1/2 large red or sweet yellow onion - 1 pint cherry tomatoes - 1 teaspoon brown sugar - Thin slices of prosciutto, optional - Fresh basil for garnish, rough chopped Directions: Spoon pizza sauce over cooked zucchini crust pizza. Sprinkle mozzarella over top. In a skillet, heat butter and add mushrooms, cooking on high heat until browned. When done, spread over pizza. In same skillet, add onions and cook until caramelized (add a little more butter or olive oil if necessary). When done, distribute over pizza. In same skillet, add tomatoes and brown sugar. Cook for about 5 minutes on medium-high heat to soften. When done, spread over pizza. Bake for about 8 minutes or until cheese has melted. Remove from oven. Top with prosciutto and fresh cut basil.

Fans of renowned magician David Blaine may think he would look up to Harry Houdini or Doug Henning, but he looked elsewhere. “My mother was my No. 1 inspiration,” Blaine said sweetly of Patricia White. “She taught me to read really good books, and to go to the library and read and research. Incredible writers – those were my inspiration, too. She was a teacher. She did a lot for people. When she passed away, everybody was devastated. She was amazing.” Blaine is promoting his forthcoming tour, which includes a Sunday, May 27 stop at the Mesa Arts Center. In late April, he appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. He performed a card trick after sewing his mouth shut in front of the host, members of The Roots, and actress Priyanka Chopra. “What you saw on Fallon is just a small dose of the show,” Blaine said. “The real stuff I do has to be seen live.” He melds feats of endurance with straight magic. Blaine has been working out four hours a day, and barely eating, to prepare for his tour. He can’t have any food in his stomach when he does a Hadji Ali-inspired trick with kerosene, a gallon of water and a lighter. A vaudeville magician known for his controlled regurgitation, Ali died after a bout of pneumonitis. He doesn’t want the same thing to happen to him. “I’m getting fit and preparing for the tour,” he said. Described by Howard Stern as the greatest, Blaine redefined magic after producing and directing his TV special, May 2018
Street Magic, when he was 23. Blaine’s primetime specials have shown him being buried alive in New York City for a week, encased inside a 6-ton block of ice for three days, surviving standing atop a 100-foottall pillar in Bryant Park for 36 hours without a safety net, enduring 44 days inside a transparent box in London on nothing but water, and living within 1 million volts discharged at him continuously for 72 hours from seven Tesla coils. The magic behind his career? Blaine’s mom. Blaine was intrigued by the magicians he saw on street corners or on Coney Island in New York. White encouraged a 4-year-old Blaine to pursue his desired career. “I was lucky in the sense she let me pursue my passions,” he said. Blaine describes his success simply. He does the opposite of other magicians. “I am a performer of the street. I’m the complete opposite of The World’s Greatest Magic,” he said of the TV show. “I love watching people’s reaction. That only happens with a certain kind of magic. There’s that suspension of disbelief.”

There’s no disbelief on Blaine’s side, however. He has nerves of steel. “I don’t just jump into things,” he said. “I practice. I rehearse. I meet with different people. If I just jumped in and created, I would have that nervous feeling, I’m sure. “Step by step, I get all the failures out
of the way before I start to approach the concept. When I see something, I do something. I don’t get nervous. It’s more of the excitement of trying to achieve it. For me, it’s not about the actual results. It’s the work that goes into it. That’s the driving force.”

Orchestra Director Walter Temme has been with Mountain View High School since 1994. He has appeared at concerts wearing costumes and accompanied by a pony. (Photo courtesy Mountain View High School)
Mountain View High School’s orchestra program will perform its annual Surround Sound concert at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 17, in the school auditorium. This year’s theme is “Set Sail for Adventure,” which combines the school’s five orchestras comprised of 250 musicians. The program was named for the way the students overflow the stage to create a border around the auditorium, surrounding the audience with their music. “I like to refer to it as 360 degrees of 250 musicians,” said Walter Temme, the orchestra director. The Surround Sound concert also gives the orchestras a chance to perform lighter fare than the traditional classical music. Drawing heavily from Hollywood movie scores, the combined orchestras play recognizable instrumental pieces. Temme is known for his creative approach each year, portraying characters to complement the music. The event, the program’s biggest fundraiser of the year, also includes
dinner provided by Outback Steakhouse from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., and raffle drawings throughout the evening, both sponsored by the Mountain View Orchestra Parents Organization. Tickets are $20 to attend the dinner and concert, or $5 to attend the concert only. Dinner and concert tickets can be purchased at http:// mvhsorch.ludus.com. Raffle tickets will be available for purchase during dinner and prior to the concert. Funds raised will be used to support the program and its music clinics, and its ability to invite well-respected musicians to work with the orchestras. The orchestras perform quarterly in the school’s 1,200-seat auditorium. They compete in regional and state festivals, where they frequently earn superior ratings. The Mountain View Orchestra Parents Organization is a volunteer group committed to supporting the school’s orchestras and the orchestra director in delivering students an excellent music education. American Interiors is now located on the southeast corner of Power and McKellips roads in the Safeway shopping center. (Photo by Lynette Carrington)
American Interiors recently relocated its showroom, but the family-owned and -operated business is Mesa’s only one-stop shop for remodeling and flooring. Since 1998, Amy and Brian Frost have owned American Interiors, which formerly sat at the southwest corner of Power and McKellips roads for 15 years. When the lease was up, it moved to the opposite side of the street, in the Safeway shopping center complex behind Walgreens. “The address says Power Road, but we really face McKellips,” Amy said. American Interiors’ specialties are bathrooms and kitchens. Customers will find an assortment of countertops, backsplashes and tile and cabinet selections. “Brian is a general contractor, so we do everything,” she said. “We do remodels, new builds and additions. We’ll do any project big or small.” He also brings in electricians, plumbers, painters, drywall and stucco workers to complete construction. His team recently started installing pavers and wood grain veneers to home exteriors. Frost said that kitchens are by far the biggest remodel request and that can include new cabinetry. “We’ve had customers coming in looking to get kitchen cabinets refaced,” she said. “You can get cabinets refaced, but they’re still stuck with nasty or worn cabinet interiors. We’ve had people come in with estimates May 2018
for cabinet refacing and we come in thousands less to do completely new cabinets.” Customers looking to engage with American Interiors can work with the company a few ways. “Sometimes we have people who want us to come to their home first and they haven’t been into our showroom,” she said. “Sometimes they come in and we can give a ballpark figure of what a job will cost.” If clients need on-site measurements, American Interiors does have a small charge, which is credited toward a purchase. New flooring in a home or business can make a huge difference in the look or feel of a room. American Interiors offers laminate, hardwood, tile, carpet and luxury vinyl. Mohawk flooring is one of the showroom’s most popular products. “We are a Mohawk color center and we’ve been aligned with Mohawk for maybe 17 years,” she said. American Interiors also carries Shaw Floors, Mastercraft Cabinets, Marazzi, Tuftex, Medallion, Daltile and American Olean. “We really like it when people stop in to see the showroom,” Front said. “It’s always nice to meet somebody and let them see what we have in our store.
HomeSmart International acquired Coldwell Banker Trails and Paths and its 65 agents at Power and McDowell roads. “After 20 years serving the East Valley, Trails and Paths has agreed to a sale and merger with HomeSmart, one of the fastest-growing real estate companies,” said Ron Brown, managing broker and CEO of Coldwell Banker Trails and Paths. “I believe HomeSmart’s cutting edge technology will take us to a new generation of real estate services for our agents and customers.”

AT&T upgraded four cell towers on its 4G LTE network in Mesa to provide faster, more reliable wireless service. The upgraded cell towers will help customers get the most out of their mobile devices. Customers will experience better network connectivity while streaming videos, sharing on social media or texting family and friends. “We know how important it is for our Mesa customers to stay connected,” said Toni M. Morales, director of external affairs, AT&T Arizona. “We want to provide the best possible mobile experience, and we constantly invest in our local network to accomplish that goal.” These upgrades are part of AT&T’s ongoing efforts to increase speeds, add capacity and expand the availability of its network using the latest technology. By building out its 4G LTE network, AT&T is laying the foundation for 5G.
HomeSmart...continued from page 23 This move expands its networkwide agent count to more than 14,500 and increases its footprint to 133 office locations in 17 states. HomeSmart is transitioning Trails and Paths and its agents to be part of its Phoenix brokerage. “Trails and Paths attracted high-quality agents in Mesa and outlying areas that we are excited about joining the HomeSmart family,” said HomeSmart COO Wendy Forsythe. “We are thrilled this great company and its agents will be part of our tremendous momentum as we continue to focus on our strategic priorities to provide long-term value to our agents and their clients.” The acquisition of this former Coldwell Banker brokerage gives the combined network of Phoenix agents another location to serve and meet with customers in its high-tech office. “As part of the acquisition, HomeSmart is taking over the existing office space that the agents already utilize and is upgrading their technology,” said Matt Widdows, HomeSmart founder and CEO. “We want them to continue to have consistency as they transition to HomeSmart. At the same time, this allows us to expand our footprint in an area where we’ve been looking to establish an office for a while in order to provide amenities to agents in addition to our industry-leading technology.”
