•CONSIDER THIS• BY ELLEN SNORTLAND

ENDING RACISM IT’S UP TO US

“I

can’t breathe!” I hope those words chill you to the bone, that we hear the voices of George Floyd and Eric Garner gasping loudly into our collective souls for as long as we live. African-Americans can’t breathe, or jog, or birdwatch, or shop, or check into an Airbnb, or go to a swimming pool, or a barbecue … White-skinned people have got to step up to counteract the white people who are racists; talking about it isn’t good enough anymore. As Ibram X. Kendi wrote in his excellent book, “How to Be an Anti-Racist,” being not racist doesn’t cut it. We need to be anti-racist and racism. Does this make you feel bad? Good. However, it’s not sufficient to feel bad, although that’s a tiny start. Feelings certainly can motivate action; outrage is a great tool. Mr. Kendi lays out a template for combatting sexism, homophobia, all the bigotry out there. I believe all of us need to take this on, and of course, we all need to grow — forever. Read anything by Roxanne Gay, and you’ll grow. For more growth, subscribe to Darrell Scott’s “PushBlack,” which is an excellent and inclusive chronicle of black life in the US. (pushblack.org.) Recalling the old chestnut, “Some of my best friends are black…” I can say that’s true in my case, not as a foil. And not just friends; I have a black niece for goodness’ sakes! I owe it to my friends and family to use my privilege to support their futures and current well-being. If you’re white and you’re reading this, imagine being scared to death every time your child or grandchild goes out into the world. Having your blood pressure skyrocket every time the phone rings until they are back home, day in and day out. Hard to imagine, isn’t it? People in war-torn countries can imagine it. And for far too many African-American people, the US is a war zone, becoming more so each day. Back to actions, not just words. What could I do? Write a column? Check. Ask people to post it? Check. What else, what else… got it! Imitate the “Girl Scout Law and Promise” as applicable to being an Anti-Racist! Hold up three fingers and repeat after me: The Anti-Racist Promise On my honor, I will do my best: To serve goodness and my country, To help people of color at all times, And to live by the Anti-Racist Law.

The Anti-Racist Law I will do my best to be: Honest and fair — never make excuses for racists; Be friendly and helpful — pull my car over if I see harassment or violence Considerate and caring — call authorities, or if authorities are the perpetrators, a news organization; then stand witness and record assaults/incidents Courageous and strong Responsible for what I say and do, calling people out for racism Respect myself and others — kneel or otherwise show solidarity during the national anthem Respect authority — only when that authority is earned Use resources wisely Make the world a better place, and Be a sibling to everyone and especially my siblings of color. More ideas for anti-racism: Brainstorm with your other white anti-racist family and friends for ideas and actions. Ask your African-American, Hispanic, Pacific Islander, LGBTQ, and Native American friends and family what they would like you to do, which may include simply shutting up and listening, instead of proving how damned woke you are! Petition the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts for anti-racist badges and challenge the Boy Scouts to come up with an antihomophobic badge while you’re at it. I just thought of another idea. At one time, some neighbors used to have a symbol on their doors for kids who were afraid; they knew if they saw that sign, they could get help from that household. I think I need to fly a UN flag — I just happen to have one — as a marker for “If you need help, you’re welcome here.” Oh, and the exponentially-rising anti-Semitism that is also back? Never forget that predominantly “Christian” white supremacists are haters of all people who aren’t like them. Please email me at Ellen@beautybitesbeast.com if you have other solid, actionable ideas. I want to know what you’re going to do. Theories at this point are too late. We need your white skin in the game. n Ellen has been writing Consider This… for the Pasadena Weekly for a long, long time.

ear PUSD Community, This has been one of the most eventful years in the history of our district. The last few months have been a time of major adjustments and change as together we honored the Safer at Home public health orders and slowed the spread of COVID-19. I must take a minute to thank our amazing teachers, administrators and staff for ensuring that learning continues for our students. Our teachers and staff kept teaching, students kept learning, and parents and caregivers supported learning at home. I am so proud of the way that the PUSD community responded. Through it all, our community united and demonstrated that persevering through adversity is truly what makes us champions. From instruction to nutrition, PUSD has continued to offer programs and services in dramatically different ways to serve our students. Since schools physically closed in March, PUSD served more than 120,000 meals at our Grab and Go Centers and this service will continue through the summer. Our community has come together to support our students and families. The city of Pasadena provides meals on weekends and our community partners and volunteers serve and deliver meals and assist our students and families in a variety of ways. I am especially grateful to our food service workers who put themselves in harm’s way to continue to serve our families. Our students have shown us just how remarkable they are. Many of our students are transitioning from elementary to middle school, and middle to high school, and graduating from high school. With large public gatherings ruled out by COVID-19, we are celebrating our students in a different way. I want to especially address our high school graduates, seniors who have worked so hard over their years in high school and who now face a very different world than just three months ago.

LETTERS WANTED:

We have taken extra care to make your virtual graduations the special event that you have earned while knowing it is far from what you imagined. Even in these circumstances, we are excited to celebrate your achievement and we are confident that despite these very different circumstances you will go off into the world and accomplish great things. It is our intention to have an in-person celebration when safety permits. As we look ahead to our next school year that begins in August, our team is developing plans for face-to-face instruction, distance learning, and a blend of the two. We are actively exploring options for instruction while keeping everyone’s safety as our top priority. We will keep you informed as our planning is developed. As you may know, COVID-19 has created a severe funding shortfall for all schools in California, PUSD included. The loss of revenue to the state is in the billions, and we are facing severe budget challenges as a result. We are undertaking an extensive review of our budgets, with the goal of keeping reductions away from the classroom. At the same time, we are advocating for fiscal relief from the state. We fully understand the key role schools will play in the recovery process and to continue to deliver the teaching and learning that prepares our students for success in the future. I want to again thank our Board of Education, instructional and support staff, and administrators for their hard work and dedication during this emergency. Thank you for your support and understanding as we move the Pasadena Unified School District forward. All of us working together will get through this as we unite to keep our community healthy and safe. I can’t wait for the day when we can see each other in person. n Brian McDonald is superintendent of the Pasadena Unified School District.

A MORNING OF ANGER TURNS INTO AN EVENING OF PEACEFUL PROTEST AGAINST POLICE-RELATED VIOLENCE IN THE WAKE OF THE OFFICER-INVOLVED DEATH OF GEORGE FLOYD BY KEVIN UHRICH

C

arrying signs that read “George Floyd’s Life Matters,” “Black Lives Matter,” “White Silence is Violence,” “No Justice No Peace,” “Stop Racism With Positive Action,” “No More Excuses” and “I Won’t be Silent So You Can Be Comfortable,” more than 1,000 people turned out Sunday evening for a peaceful protest at Pasadena City Hall over the officer-involved death of George Floyd on Monday, May 25, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. That was far different from the scene earlier that day, when an estimated 100 people marched from La Pintoresca Park at North Fair Oaks Avenue and Washington Boulevard to Old Pasadena. There, according to the online news site Pasadena Now, protesters continued chanting and confronted drivers caught up in the street action. Although there were a few skirmishes, no major injuries were reported, according to police and other local news outlets. Although a countywide 6 p.m. curfew had been called just a few hours before the 7 p.m. event was set to begin, local authorities allowed the hour-long protest to proceed as previously scheduled in Centennial Square, where long-shuttered protesters gathered wearing face masks and trying to keep at least three feet apart to protect themselves against COVID-19. Predominantly white, the crowd was a mix of African American, Asian American and Latino protesters. Likewise, organizers of this event were of a number of faiths and Christian denominations organized through the group LA Voice, and the United Methodist Church of Pasadena and All Saints Episcopal Church, which, like the Pasadena Police Department, is located right across the street from City Hall. Unlike demonstrations in other cities around the country — with rioting, police confrontations and looting occurring in Santa Monica, Long Beach and other area communities earlier the same day — Sunday night’s protest was peaceful, focusing instead on bringing people together on the need to rein in police use of of force. CITIZEN REVIEW

PASADENA COUNCIL’S PUBLIC SAFETY COMMITTEE TO DISCUSS CIVILIAN POLICE OVERSIGHT BY KEVIN UHRICH

S

haken by George Floyd’s televised death at the hands of a problem cop in Minneapolis on May 25, the Pasadena City Council’s Public Safety Committee (PSC) agreed to consider civilian oversight of local police at it’s meeting today, June 4. Possibly making that discussion somewhat awkward is both candidates for mayor in the November election, Mayor Terry Tornek, a member of the PSC, and Councilman Victor Gordo, both rejected ideas of having an appointed civilian police board, as proposed during the primary election by then-candidate Jason Hardin. In fact, the idea of a civilian police oversight board was first broached in 1992, following the Los Angeles Riots sparked by the acquittal of the four LAPD cops who mercilessly beat Altadena’s Rodney King in Lakeview Terrace on March 3, 1991. The issue was made public by city Human Relations Commission members Meta McCullough, a well known community activist and former PW columnist who sadly has passed away, and Karen Hooks-Roon, who was married to a Pasadena PD officer. Then-Police Chief Jerry Oliver, who is African American, opposed the proposal and initiated in its place a citizen police academy, which civilians could join to learn about being an officer. Today, the four City Council members on the PSC oversee the Police Department. Starting Monday’s City Council meeting, Tornek led off, saying the council would adjourn in the memory of coronavirus victims, all victims of racism, and in commemoration of Gun Violence Week.

Councilman Tyron Hampton, who is African American and admitted to being scared when seeing cops in his rear view mirror, asked for the matter of civilian oversight be put on the PSC agenda, which City Manager Steve Mermell said would be done. “I’m asking you tonight that the City Council try to understand where I am coming from as an African-American male, that every time I get pulled over by the police my stomach drops, I fear for my life. Whenever I say this, typically people think, oh, no, stop. You’re the vice mayor of the city of Pasadena. No one has ever asked me if I was the vice mayor of the city of Pasadena when they pulled me over.” “We have to hold people accountable for mistreatment of African Americans, and people of color in general... What happened to Mr. Floyd happens regularly. It happens in Pasadena. So let’s not act and pretend like we are above that. We’re not,” Hampton said. Councilman John Kennedy, who chairs the PSC, seconded Hampton’s sentiments, saying he supports his colleague, but did not elaborate. Hampton and Councilman Steve Madison are also PSC members. “This is an opportunity for Pasadena to, with the rest of the country, heal,” said Gordo. “We need an opportunity to heal and we need an opportunity to make a strong statement that violence perpetrated against anybody is unacceptable, regardless of who the actor may be. What’s particularly troubling is if the violence is perpetrated by someone with authority. I do believe this City Council needs to take a very strong position that it is unacceptable for ... anyone to be the subject of violence at the hands of anyone, particularly someone with authority.” n 06.04.20 | PASADENA WEEKLY 5

‘WE’RE STILL HERE’

OLDER HAWAIIANS AGAINST CALTECH’S THIRTY METER TELESCOPE LEAVE MAUNAKEA AS TMT BACKERS TOUT RESULTS OF NEW POLL BY KEVIN UHRICH

A CONTINUED FROM PAGE 5

The event was so causal, in fact, that young parents brought their children to the protest. One might have even forgotten for a moment that there was a pandemic lockdown in effect if not for the facial coverings and occasional nudge to move farther away from others in the crowd. “As a mother and African-American woman, I know how perilous it is, and for my husband to walk around, I always say be careful. You don’t really have to do anything. You just have to look suspicious or look like you don’t belong,” said Barbara Walker, moderator of the board of deacons at First Baptist Church of Pasadena, also located near City Hall. “We wanted to protest against the way African Americans are treated by society in this place and time, and our response is we are not going to be treated this way,” said Walker, who emceed the first portion of the presentation. “That’s our response; we are not going to be silent.” Floyd, a 46-year-old single father of two daughters and a standout athlete in high school and junior college, was killed in Powderhorn, a neighborhood south of downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota, by police officer Derek Chauvin. Chauvin had a lengthy history of complaints filed against him, with all but two of 18 complaints determined to be unfounded. Floyd, who was African American and a native of Houston, was handcuffed and lying face down on the street during his arrest. Chauvin, who is white, kept his knee on the right side of Floyd’s neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds. Chauvin had his knee on Floyd’s neck 2 minutes and 53 seconds after Floyd became unresponsive. Chauvin was arrested May 29th and charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. Civil rights leaders have strongly objected to the third-degree murder filing because it does not include an element of intent to kill on Chauvin’s part. The other three officers involved in the incident — Tou Thao, J. Alexander Kueng, and Thomas K. Lane — did nothing to stop Chauvin. They also have been fired, but as of Tuesday none of them had not been criminally charged. Over the four nights following Floyd’s death, violence erupted in Minneapolis, with a police station being burned, and other major cities, among them Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, Atlanta and Los Angeles, erupting in violence. In LA County, rioting was first reported in Los Angeles in the downtown area, the Fairfax District, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica and Long Beach. Those attending Sunday’s protest in Pasadena were asked to bring whistles, bells and other kinds of noisemakers, which were eventually used by people in the crowd for nearly nine minutes — the length of time Chauvin had his knee on Floyd’s neck. Speakers at the event included activist James Farr, rapper and preacher Andre Henry and Jasmine Richards Abdullah of Black Lives Matter. Perhaps the lack of violence was the reason why the event garnered no coverage by the mainstream media. “When I got home, my husband Ken and I scoured the television coverage to see if there was any on the Pasadena City Hall vigil,” wrote author and longtime Pasadena Weekly columnist Ellen Snortland. “We could not find anything. I guess the broadcast media is only interested in looting and fires. I’m sorry they didn’t cover something that was utterly and completely peaceful and hopeful.” n 6 PASADENA WEEKLY | 06.04.20

s protesters against construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope leave Hawaii’s sacred Maunakea mountain out of fear of health-compromised elders contracting the deadly novel corornavirus, backers of TMT are pointing to a new poll indicating a majority of Hawaiians favor construction of the giant telescope. Conducted by Ward Research Inc., the poll shows 61 percent of those asked said they support moving ahead with construction of the $1.4 billion project, with 32 percent opposed. Meanwhile, the website Space.com is reporting native Hawaiians who oppose construction of TMT on the dormant volcano have reduced their presence on the mountain, where they have been protesting for the past five years. “On March 14, the Pu’uhonua o Pu’uhuluhulu community encamped on the mountain published a statement on asking kupuna (elders) and ‘those with a higher risk of respiratory illness’ to stay home and off the mountain. The group, who refer to themselves as kia’i, or guardians, also asked visitors and supporters to refrain from visiting Maunakea until the pandemic has passed its critical stage, according to the statement,” Space.com reported. “In addition to taking generally recommended precautions, the kia’i said they are concerned that tourists visiting Hawaii from elsewhere put their elderly community at increased risk,” the website reported. “Given where we are, it was important for us to understand how Hawaii residents feel about the project,” said Gordon Squires, TMT vice president of external relations, according to the TMT website. “These results are significant, demonstrating that a majority of the Hawaii community supports TMT moving forward on Maunakea. The findings also show that the people of Hawaii see the benefits TMT will bring in terms of Hawaii’s economy and education. They also understand that TMT will likely revolutionize humankind’s understanding of the universe and will help to ensure that Hawaii remains the global leader in astronomy.” TMT Project has been developed as collaboration between Pasadena’s Caltech, the University of California (UC), the Association of Canadian Universities for Research in Astronomy (ACURA), and the national institutes of Japan, China and India with the goal to design, develop, construct, and operate a thirty-meter class telescope and observatory on Maunakea in cooperation with the University of Hawaii. The TMT International Observatory LLC (TIO), a nonprofit organization, was established in May 2014 to carry out the construction and operation phases of the TMT Project. Members of TIO are Caltech, the University of California, the National Institutes of Natural Sciences of Japan, the National Astronomical Observatories of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Department of Science and Technology of India, and the National Research Council of Canada; the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA) is a TIO Associate. Major funding has been provided by the Gordon & Betty Moore Foundation. Other key findings of the poll include: • 92 percent of Hawaii residents agree there should be a way for science and Hawaiian culture both to exist on Maunakea • 83 percent of Hawaii residents agree that the protest on Maunakea is really about issues larger than TMT, such as Hawaiian homelands, overthrow of the Hawaiian kingdom, and land management • 80 percent of Hawaii residents agree that peaceful protests are fine but have no tolerance for protests that result in laws being broken • 79 percent of Hawaii residents agree that the government is responsible for providing safe construction access to the TMT site • 76 percent agree that TMT will help create good paying jobs and economic and educational benefits for those living on Hawaii Island • 65 percent of Hawaii residents agree that failure to move forward with TMT will lead to the departure of Hawaii’s $167-million astronomy industry Although elders were asked to retreat for their safety against COVID-19, there is still a kia’i presence on the mountain, kupuna and kia’i, said spokesperson Noe Noe Wong-Wilson, according to Space.com. “We’re still here,” Wong-Wison told the news website, adding that this type of reduction in their active presence does not mean the movement halts, too. “We’re not against the science of astronomy,” Wong-Wislon told Space.com. “We are against the building of a building too big on our sacred mountain. And we really want to make that clear, because that gets lost.” Squires said a time frame has not been set for construction to begin on the TMT observatory. n

DANCE OF LIFE

Satenik Ashikyan

SATENIK ASHIKYAN AND FRIENDS HELP KEEP AN ANCIENT ARMENIAN TRADITION ALIVE IN GLENDALE

BY SARAH BROWN

W

hen Satenik Ashikyan was offered a job at an Armenian news outlet in Los Angeles in 2002, she packed up her life in Yerevan, Armenia and made the move. What she never could have imagined, however, is that she would become a key player in an international movement to preserve an ancient tradition — Armenian folk dance. It’s a Tuesday evening, and Ashikyan stands in the center of a spacious dance studio in downtown Glendale. She is poised and professional, wearing black dance sneakers. Her hair is neatly pulled back from her face. She greets her students one by one as they trickle in, exchanging hugs and “hellos,” or “barev” in Armenian. Ashikyan is the co-founder and dance instructor of FolkLorik, an Armenian traditional folk dance group, established in 2012. Although the group is relatively new, many of the dances they practice date to the first century and pre-Christian Armenia. Traditional dance, Ashikyan explains, is deeply rooted in paganism. Ancient History According to legend, St. Gregory the Illuminator converted Armenia to Christianity in 301-3 AD. The story goes that St. Gregory, also known as Grigor Lusavorich, was thrown in a well and remained there for 13 years for preaching Christianity. He eventually appealed to the then-king of Armenia, Tiridates the Great, and converted him. St. Gregory then became the first bishop (Catholicos) of the Armenian Apostolic Church, which was built in “The Holy City,” Ejmiatzin. As Armenia embraced the new faith, religious leaders ordered pagan temples torn down, denouncing rituals and worship associated with pagan beliefs. These included spiritual dances, which were originally used in pagan ceremonies to celebrate life and worship nature. “Liturgy, music and prayer were kept and redesigned to fit into the religious practice,” Ashikyan explains. “Dance was not.” However, Armenians found a way to preserve their tradition; incorporating dance into religious celebrations and holidays, or gatherings that took place outside the Church. Thus, dance found its place among Christian Armenians, and continued to be practiced and passed down. Ashikyan’s interest in dance goes back to her childhood in Armenia, when she observed traditional dancing at weddings and celebrations. After moving to Los Angeles, she noticed something peculiar taking place: “People at Armenian weddings would make a circle, but not know what to do after that,” she says. “They had the intuition and the spirit to dance, but they either forgot, or didn’t know what dances to do.” Ashikyan soon realized what was needed: a way to help make traditional dance a part of the everyday lives of Armenians in the LA diaspora. Ejmiatzin The dances performed at FolkLorik are different than those practiced in most other Armenian dance groups in Los Angeles. They are the fruits of labor of a few dance luminaries who have dedicated their lives to documenting and teaching traditional dances that go back thousands of years to the remote villages of historic Armenia. These are the dances that remained untouched and uninfluenced by Russian style during Armenia’s time as a Soviet state. Two of the most prominent figures in the movement to preserve traditional dances are Gagik Ginosyan and Tom Bozigian, both Ashikyan’s long-time teachers and confidants. Ginosyan lives in Yerevan and currently leads the movement to reincorporate traditional dance into religious celebrations and urban spaces. Bozigian, 82, is a Los Angeles local and attends this evening’s class. He began collecting dances as a child, after learning them from the first generation of Armenian Genocide survivors who originally fled to Southern California. The members of FolkLorik regard Bozigian as “The Legend.” Ashikyan walks to the center of her classroom, which is now full of students ranging in age from 25 to 82. She demonstrates a few dance steps, giving detailed explanations of arm placements and tempo. “OK...Ejmiatzin!” she says. Music blares from the speakers, and the dance commences. In addition to being “The Holy City,” or where the first Armenian Apostolic Church was built, Ejmiatzin is also the name of a traditional folk dance. “It is believed to have been used in pagan ceremonies to worship the sun,” says Ashikyan. “The dance imitates the sun’s rays.” Indeed, as the dancers raised their arms toward the sky with their hands clasping

one another’s, their half-circle formation resembled the image of a rising sun. After 301-3 AD, the dance took on Christian meaning and became more widely accepted as celebration of the Ejmiatzin Church. “Some believe the raising of the arms represents the dome of the church,” Ashikyan explains. Ejmiatzin isn’t the only dance rooted in pagan traditions and beliefs. Many traditional dances are related or dedicated to change of nature, fertility, death, and new life. In some traditional dances, steps like stamping are believed to have symbolized the “fight against evil or the devil.” The circular nature of the dance formations also carries ancient symbolic significance, with the circle representing the “circle of life.” In many dances the left leg often remains outside of the circle because, as Ashikyan explains, the left was associated with negativity. “In Armenia we say that if something’s going wrong, it’s going left. It’s just a saying now, but it comes from paganism,” she says. 'More Than Dancing' Traditional dance is no longer viewed or practiced by Armenians as worship. It now holds more of a cultural and social significance— the pagan symbolism lost over time and adapted to fit Christianity. The class moves on to another dance— a Kochari, or a regional dance. Smiles cross the faces of the dancers as they link arms to form a single straight line. One man, Arsen Gulesserian, looks particularly focused as he chants the counts aloud to himself, and occasionally calls out the next step for his neighbors. Gulesserian is a regular, travelling two and a half hours round trip nearly every Tuesday for the past four years to attend FolkLorik classes. Born in Istanbul, and living in the United States for 41 years, he is skillful and quick on his feet at age 76. “Culture, social activity, exercise,” he says, “These are the dances our great, great grandparents knew.” For many FolkLorik dancers, connection to Armenian history, culture, and community is the primary reason they enjoy practicing traditional dance each week. But for some, spirituality and religion play a big role in how they experience traditional dance. “When the music starts, I feel something in my blood,” says Nune Torosyan, another FolkLorik dancer. “I think it’s my connection with the ground. In structure, physically, the traditional dances are more up and down, so the connection is with ground and God, ground and God,” she says, motioning upward. Torosyan dances with ease and grace, almost meditative in the way she moves. For her, everything is connected to Christianity. “The church is not just a physical building. Your body is a church, and the unity of people in a space is a church,” she says. In the last part of class, Ashikyan gathers the group together for one final circle dance. Dancers link their pinky fingers together: connectedness while maintaining individuality and distance. The music begins, and the floor begins to vibrate as feet meet the ground with force. Though this is an ordinary Tuesday night for FolkLorik dancers, they sense a larger force uniting them. With every class and every dance, they are keeping an ancient tradition alive for generations to come. “This is definitely more than dancing,” Ashikyan says. “It’s where people come to find and express their Armenian-ness.” n 06.04.20 | PASADENA WEEKLY 7

hen we hear about how the pandemic and ensuing lockdown has affected local “industry” we might not have been thinking of the Gourmet Cobbler Factory. Gourmet cobbler? Factory? Yes, another little known facet of our local dining scene is that apparently Pasadena has been the epicenter of artisanal fruit cobbler production for several decades. Just around the corner from the Academy Theater, the current iteration of the Gourmet Cobbler Factory dates to 2002, when Clifton and Gloria Powell brought their recipes for “Southern” fruit cobbler to replace those at the original cobbler operation, which had been producing cobbler in the same location since 1978. Clifton had worked as a machinist at Disney for 30 years and the Powells lived across the street on Catalina when they heard the original owner was leaving. According to Clifton, “I bought a lot of cobbler from him, [but] I had my own Southern recipe… crust on the bottom, double crust.” Confident in the provenance and quality of their recipes, the Powells seamlessly installed their operation to insure that Pasadena never suffered a deficit of competently rendered fruit cobbler. When we meet, Clifton Powell, 76, is standing in the small lobby of the “Factory” next to a display case of cobbler in tins and small individual pecan and sweet potato pies. On the back wall behind him is a painting of a New Orleans street scene with Jackson Square and St. Louis Cathedral in the background. Born in rural Mississippi and largely raised in New Orleans, Clifton moved to Los Angeles in 1960, where he finished high school and met Gloria, 75. The pair have been married for 56 years and have four grown children, 13 grandchildren and one great grandchild. However, none of their offspring have pursued the family legacy of cobbler baking. But did we mention the barbecue? “I started the barbecue about five years ago…” Originally the barbecue offerings were prepped outside in back of the store. “I liked doing it in the barrel.” A neighbor’s complaint compelled him to invest in a wood-fired indoor smoker. “Someone was calling in… it was an environmental thing. I had the Health Department come out and they said I was fine. I haven’t had a problem with the Health Department or anyone else since.” He’s fully satisfied with the new equipment. “It gives me a good smoke… I can do 15 racks [of ribs] at a time.” I’m even allowed behind the wizard’s curtain, where heaving open the steel door of the smoker, Clifton draws out a fragrant, oak-scented rack with a dark glistening coat of bark. My timing is right. A catering order sold out the morning’s batch and by dinnertime my rack should be fresh, rested and ready. Barbecue is not native to New Orleans’ creole cuisine, but gumbo is and Clifton has an original and savory take on the classic dish. “I make the roux with garden vegetables

and put chicken, sausage, shrimp and crab in it.” Eschewing flour in the roux, it also happens to be gluten-free. Okra? Apparently it’s a naïve question. “Okra is gumbo!” Taking a pint home with me, along with the ribs and cobbler, I can attest to the gumbo’s complexity, spiced with a subtle heat and a relatively light but pleasing heft, shot through with generous portions of shrimp and chicken. (It’s available in pint, quart and gallon portions.) I came for the cobbler but have become distractedly besotted by the ribs and gumbo. The side orders accompanying my ribs further verify the care taken here to insure tastiness. The potato salad is tanged with mustard, the collard greens spiked with pepper flakes, and the baked beans are nicely thick, but not too sweet. Oh… and the cobbler? It’s the Gourmet Cobbler Factory y’all, come on now! I’ve sampled the peach and cherry so far… apple, blueberry, blackberry, mixed berry… keep ‘em coming! All the cobblers are available in portions that serve between 2 and 50, but give Gloria four hours’ notice for the larger trays. By the way, I have a “thing” about pecan pie having fruitlessly chased a fleeting childhood memory of my Aunt Lucy’s perfect rendition for years. Although, my sample here was a small individual tin, I have to say the “Factory” pecan pie is rich and thick with nuts and comes pretty darn close to taking me back home to Lucy. Though I’ve probably gained five pounds in my two days of gorging on barbecue and cobbler here, I have no regrets. There is an unmistakable and distinct “down-home” quality to the food and atmosphere here that is deeply restorative, nourishing, and somehow reassuring that everything will be alright. As it turned out, my first call into the Gourmet Cobbler Factory last week coincided with the first week of their re-opening. The Powells actually shut the business down a few days ahead of the lockdown in March and only opened up again on May 18. Concerned for their own safety, the couple quarantined at their home in Victorville. In the meantime, as a family operation without a standard weekly payroll, they were deemed ineligible for the Payroll Protection Program loans. They have applied for an SBA loan but have yet to be approved. Will the business be secure? Clifton Powell seems quite unflappable when asked. With a resigned and weary sigh he replies, “Customers are coming back. I’ve struggled for 18 years with this business. I’ll be fine.” Let’s make sure that’s true. The Gourmet Cobbler Factory and Clifton’s Barbecue are vitally unique aspects of our local culture that deserve to be supported and sustained. Come for the cobbler, but don’t leave without some ribs and gumbo. You will be happy and we’ll all be better off.
