•CONSIDER THIS•
Here’s the scoop on dog poop By Ellen Snortland Pasadena Weekly Columnist
I
am throwing down a gauntlet: Someone, please invent a way to recycle and repurpose doggie doo-doo! I’m a bit pooped lately — forgive the expression — and I’ve had way too much time to mull this over, which is perhaps a “waste” of my intellect. That said, consider the megatons of bowser boom-booms that simply go into landfills. Ewww. There are scientific innovators in the climate crisis field who are experimenting with capturing and recycling cattle gas emanations. Bovine methane could be tomorrow’s fashionable fuel. Why not? Speaking of gas, I know a couple of Boston Terriers who could power a small town with their “emissions.” I am one of those dutiful dog parents who walk and scoop… except when I don’t. If one of our dogs poops in an inaccessible place — for example, under a bush — where no one walks, I cover it with dirt and let nature take its course. I know I’ll probably get hate mail, but hear me out. I fret about using dog poop bags, even our compostable ones, that still end up in a landfill with the contents eventually exposed. Can’t you just hear future archaeologists? “We seem to have stepped into a culture that worships animal excrement, so much so that they sought to preserve it for the future.” Annie Archaeologist takes a whiff. “P-U! This could have been excreted yesterday. It’s so fresh! Yet the bags themselves have a perfume odor. Very odd worship indeed.” In the meantime, I do my best to use poop bags efficiently. You may be aware of the soldiers in trenches during WWI who used one match to light three cigarettes. Snipers looked for match lights, so “three on a match” became trench etiquette. I use “three on a poop bag” so I don’t squander an entire bag on one tiny turd. Nope, I go for a full bag on our walks. If I don’t attain this goal, I bring the almost-empty home, leave it open to dry, and take it out again the next day. Am I weird? Maybe. I’m at peace with that. Here’s a quandary I grapple with. We use compostable bags, but we also have craploads of the older, nonbiodegradable plastic bags still sitting in our cupboard. Is it more ecologically responsible to simply throw them into the recycling bin or use them up? And if the so-called “biodegradable” bags actually take 40 years to disintegrate, are they really worth using? I think it’s fascinating that the brain bandwidth I once devoted to All Things Drumpf is now occupied with All Things Dog Poop. Coincidence? I think not. I used to know a dog who looked forward to “potty time” because, if left unsupervised, she would promptly gobble it all up! Now that’s recycling and a method that — although meritorious — is revolting. Apparently, it doesn’t hurt the dog, but geez… I hate to even think about it. I went with my friend to the pet store to see if there was any kind of over-the-counter medicine to stop coprophagia, the grown-up word for poop eating. They had one product that claimed it “makes feces taste bad!” Isn’t that redundant? It appears that some dogs don’t agree. One of my side hustles is taking care of other people’s dogs. For my friends, I used to do that for free because I’m a dog-loving geek. However, after the economic disaster of 2008, I racked my brain for what I could do for money that also involved things I love. The answer was right in front of my face: dog care! I’ve been doing it ever since. One of my first clients had a large poodle named Scribble who grew up in an apartment in a big European city. As such, her doggie toilet habits had to be super efficient. Scribble was a genius dog, so her parents taught her to go on demand whenever they said, “Scribble, spend your pennies!” And voilá! Scribble spent her pennies, and I quickly learned that she wouldn’t go without that command.
I wondered where such an odd phrase came from. Apparently, in the mid-1800s, when the new-fangled flush toilets were introduced, they were featured at a world’s fair where a fairgoer could try the magic commode for a penny a pop. It makes me realize how much we take our indoor toilets for granted. Back to my gauntlet throw, and my challenge stands. No. 1: If you can imagine it, you can do it. No. 2: Well, you know, grab it and run with it. Oh, sorry… but you get what I’m driving at. Dog byproducts could truly be put to better use than bagging and tossing. Come on, people — let’s get off the pot and do this. Ellen Snortland has written “Consider This…” for a heckuva long time, and she also coaches first-time book authors! Remembering my father
W
Celebrating 50 Years! (Pepe’s opened in 1970, Margaritas 1977)
By Christopher Nyerges Pasadena Weekly Contributing Writer
hen my father’s 80th birthday coincided with Father’s Day some years ago, I wrote and illustrated a pictorial booklet for my father that outlined key aspects of our life together. It was my way of thanking my father. My wife, Dolores, and I went to his home after the wild cacophonous family gathering had ended. We didn’t want an audience in an atmosphere of laugher, sarcasm and possibly ridicule. I only wanted to share the thank you story with my father in a somewhat serious atmosphere. Dolores and I brought special foods, put on music, and I began my short presentation beginning with my earliest significant memories. I shared with him my memories of how he told me I would be an artist when I grew up. He always told me to put my bike and toys away, so “the boogeyman” wouldn’t steal them. As I grew older, I learned that the world was indeed full of very real “boogeymen” and my father attempted to provide me with ways to protect myself against these unsavory elements of life. I recalled to my father, while my mother and Dolores listened on, the birthday party adventures, getting haircuts in the garage, and how my father tolerated my interest in mycology and wild edibles. Everyone found the recounting amusing, even funny, but there were also tears mixed with the laughter. As with most memories, some things my father recalled quite differently from me, and some he didn’t recall at all. Some things that I saw as life-and-death serious, he saw as humorous and vice versa. But above it all, I felt I’d finally “connected” with him at age 80 in a way that I’d never managed to do before. My “Father’s Day card” wasn’t pre-made by a card company, but consisted of my own private and secret memories that I shared with him. I managed to thank him for doing all the things that I took for granted — a roof over my head, meals, an education, a relatively stable home. Of course, all our family members — “insiders” — knew my father was no saint. But I was at least acknowledging the good, and sincerely thanking him for it. My mother died two years later, and we all knew my father would be lost without her. They’d been married over 50 years. His health and activities declined, and he finally passed away on the Ides of March a few years later. Though his death did not come as a surprise — I was nevertheless left feeling his absence. That early Saturday morning when I learned of his death, I even felt parentless. My view of the world changed, and I was forced to acknowledge the limits of life and the futility of pursuing solely a material existence. After I learned of his death via a phone call, I walked into the morning rain, in shock, crying, thinking, remembering. I was not feeling cold or wet, and somehow, I was protected by that unique state of mind that enshrouded me. Afterwards, I did as I had done with my mother when she died. I spent the next three days reviewing my life with my father. At first, I allowed the random memories and pain to wash over me. I talked to Frank constantly during those three days, inviting and allowing him to be with me as we did the life review together. I felt his pain, his frustration, his emptiness and loneliness in his last few years of life. I did nothing to stop the pain of this — I allowed myself to feel it all. I spoke to Frank as I’d speak to anyone living. I felt his presence and even his responses. I did this for myself as much as for Frank and his ongoing journey. I began to see him as a young man, who met, fell in love and married my mother. Somehow, this was a major revelation to me. I had never seen my own father in that light before. He had simply been “my father.” Suddenly, he was a unique individual, with his own dreams, aspirations and goals. Amazingly, I’d never viewed him in this way during our life together. And then, after perhaps 12 hours of this and miles of walking, I began a more chronological review of my life with my father, point by point by significant point. I saw his weaknesses and strengths, as well as my own. As I did this review, I looked for all the things that I’d done right with my father, all the things I’d done wrong and all the things that I could have done better. I wrote these down. The “wrong” list was shockingly long. The “right” list only contained a few items. I asked my father to forgive me, and I resolved to do certain things differently to change and improve my character. I know I would not have imposed such a rigor upon myself had it not been for the death of my father. A week later, when there was the funeral at the church, I felt I’d come to know my father more than I ever was able to do in life. I briefly shared to the congregation my three days of “being with” my father, and learning what it was like to be Frank, in his shoes, and how we forgave one another. More importantly, I shared to family and friends who had gathered that day the importance of constantly finding the time to tell your living loved ones that you indeed love them — not waiting until they die to say the things that you should have been saying all along. Now, I remember Frank on Father’s Day and continue to express my heartfelt thanks for all that he — and my mother — gave to me.

Pasadena City Council raises Pride Flag By Matthew Rodriguez Pasadena Weekly Deputy Editor

n honor of Pride Month and for the first time in Pasadena, the Pride Flag will fly over the steps of City Hall alongside the state and city flag. “Pasadena is a city of people that are accepting, that are embracing, that are nurturing and that are very much inclusive of people from every walk of life,” said Mayor Victor Gordo. “We’re all one community. We’re all one people. And we are going to be inclusive supportive and helpful to all people in our community.” Every June, millions of people across the globe come together to celebrate and support the LGBTQ+ community. “Let it be known that LGBTQ+ folks have made and continue to make positive and long-lasting contributions to society by advancing areas of inclusion, diversity, equity and respect,” said Camila Camaleon, board president of the San Gabriel Valley LGBTQ Center. She is also the first transgender woman of color to serve in this position. Pride Month commemorates the Stonewall Riots which happened over 50 years ago after police raided a gay club named the Stonewall Inn located in Greenwich Village in New York City. Gay bars such as Stonewall served as refuges for the LGBTQ community free of public harassment. In the early morning hours of June 28, 1969, police violently harassed and arrested patrons and bartenders in the club after claiming the bar was operating with an improper liquor license. This would be the third raid of gay bars in Greenwich Village. In response, bystanders began to jeer and even throw bottles at police, sparking six days of protests. Since Stonewall, many LGBTQ support groups have emerged throughout the country, spreading the message of inclusion and diversity. “We must ensure that everyone feels safe, seen, heard and are treated with dignity, care and respect regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity so that they can live their happiest, healthiest and most authentic lives,” said Christian Port, board vice president of the San Gabriel Valley LGBTQ Center. Councilmember John Kennedy pushed the idea of raising the Pride Flag to show solidarity with the LGBTQ community especially after the annual regional pride parades were postponed or canceled due to COVID-19. “Pasadena is a city of wonder, diversity and purpose and today the city of Pasadena has added to its reputation as a welcoming city by advancing LGBTQ rights,” said Kennedy. “It was my honor to recommend to the mayor and the city council to raise for the first time the Pride Flag at city hall.” “The city of Pasadena has taken another step forward toward love, life [and] equality for all,” he added. “May the raising of the Pride Flag today serve as a source of inspiration for all.” Huntington Hospital will also fly the Pride Flag and six other cities in the San Gabriel Valley will honor Pride Month in various ways. The Pride Flag has evolved from simply being a rainbow-colored flag. The new 11-stripe flag designed by Daniel Quasar includes a five-colored chevron representing the transgender and communities of color. Dubbed the Progress Pride Flag, Quasar aimed to emphasize inclusion and progression while honoring the transgender women of color who were instrumental in the Stonewall Riots. “When Quasar released his design he said publicly, ‘We still have forward movement to make,’” said Port. “There is still work to be done. Today marks a new day in this work signified by this symbol of love and hope — this symbol of resistance to hate and inequality.”

Chamber ‘optimistic’ about state’s reopening By Matthew Rodriguez
Pasadena Weekly Deputy Editor
P
asadena officials are optimistic for economic recovery as California plans to fully reopen on June 15. “Pasadena should be able to recover as well as anyone because our economy is so diverse,” said Chamber of Commerce President Paul Little. “We aren’t dependent on a single industry to keep us going. We have a diverse group of industries that make up our economy. By and large, we should be able to recover as well as anyone else.” The state plans to fully reopen on June 15, over a year after the lockdowns started — ditching the capacity constraints or requirements on social distancing for many businesses and allowing fully vaccinated people to no longer wear masks in most situations. Pasadena will follow suit and align with the state requirements. However, even as California reports some of the lowest community transmission in the country, out of an abundance of caution, Gov. Gavin Newsom said the state of emergency order will remain in place past June 15. Newsom and health officials have used the emergency order to weild power to impose temporary rules and restrictions throughout the pandemic. “We are still in a state of emergency,” said Newsom. “This disease has not been extinguished. It’s not vanished. It’s not taking the summer months off.” The news comes as California reports record lows in COVID-19 case rate and transmission since the beginning of the pandemic. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, California has the third-lowest community coronavirus transmission rate in the country with a seven-day case rate of 11 per 100,000 people. In comparison, the next three most populous states had much higher case rates with New York at 20.7, Texas at 27.6 and Florida at 63.6. Pasadena continues to report record lows, reporting only one new case of COVID-19 and 0 deaths on June 7. Pasadena has also vaccinated 82.8% of residents — about 101,000 — with at least one dose. Assuming the state will not impose new rules and restrictions after June 15, California will withdraw with its colored tier system, which has gauged the reopening status of regions throughout the pandemic. Experts such as Jerry Nickelsburg, director of the UCLA Anderson quarterly forecast, are also optimistic for California’s economy to rebound. According to Nickelsburg, “high human contact sectors,” such as administrative services,
retail trade, leisure and hospitality — which were part of the sectors that accounted for 77% of the state’s job losses — are recording the highest job gains as of April 2021. He also expects many more jobs will return after the reopening on June 15. “Those are sectors that are beginning to return,” said Nickelsburg in a briefing on June 2. “Again, this is back in early April, and we’ve had a lot more opening up since then.” Despite the bullish economic forecasts, Little believes that the Pasadena economy will initially slowly recover as businesses and customers navigate the new social landscape. “I think people are going to be very careful,” Little said. “It’s going to be on the customers feeling comfortable coming back (as much) as it is on what the merchants can do to make sure that their environment is safe and clean and healthy.” California Division of Occupational Safety and Health or Cal/OSHA proposed new rules for workplace safety allowing employees who are fully vaccinated to remove their masks when working outdoors. However, if an employee is working indoors then they must wear a mask, unless everyone in the room is fully vaccinated and does not exhibit any COVID-19 symptoms. Pending administrative approval, the new rules should go into effect on June 15. This rule does not apply to customers unless a private business requires customers to wear masks. Customers and restaurants will still have the option to dine and drink outside even as the new rules are instituted. Restaurants, bars, breweries and wineries can continue to serve alcohol in temporary al fresco dining areas until the end of the year. Newsom also urged local officials to work with businesses to continue outdoor dining programs as he pushes for state legislation to ease zoning laws. As the path to pre-pandemic normalcy seems to be paved, Little is cautiously optimistic about the future. “I think there’s certainly reason to be more optimistic,” he said. “We’re just going to have to watch how everything unfolds.”

Blair High School nurtures students new to the country By Matthew Rodriguez Pasadena Weekly Deputy Editor
A
In 2015, Hilario Rodriguez — then 13 — traveled alone from Guatemala to the United States to earn enough money to move his family away from the violence plaguing his hometown.
State of siege When his brother died, Hilario Rodriguez, then 13, decided to travel from Guatemala to the United States to provide for his family. He left his family and went on this journey alone. Unaccompanied minors are somewhat uncommon. According to the CBP, they account for about 8% or over 65,000 migrants apprehended at the southern border so far this fiscal year. Among many other things, Rodriguez’s father taught him the places and people to avoid. “The other thing he (taught) was don’t think like a kid,” Rodriguez recalled. “Don’t think like a kid, think like an adult.” Rodriguez grew up in Tajumulco, a small town near the Guatemala-Mexico border. In 2015, he immigrated to the U.S. to earn enough money to move his family out of Tajumulco. Throughout the town’s history, they have been in constant conflict with a neighboring town, Ixchiguán. The conflict only escalated when the cartels began operating in the region. “The majority of the time they were fighting,” Rodriguez said. “In 2014, there was fighting for seven months. It was scary all the time.”

fter learning about her students’ endeavors for a better life, Teresa Garcia has nothing but praise for her pupils. “They’re the most resilient kids I know,” said Garcia, a teacher at Blair High School in Pasadena. “You’d be surprised with some of the things that they’ve been through. And yet they still come (to school) and give it their best.” Garcia is one of several teachers at the International Academy at Blair High School. For 12 years, the academy has mentored hundreds of students, all of whom were new immigrants and needed help adjusting to their new home. The students come from all over the world, from China to Croatia, but most are from Central America. Currently, they have about 150 students, but many of the teachers expect that number to increase as immigration rises this year. According to the monthly report by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), in the first four months of 2021, border patrol agents apprehended over 531,000 migrants at the southern border. To compare, in fiscal year 2020, CBP encountered 458,088 migrants. In April 2021, CBP detained the most migrants so far this year: 178,622. In April 2020, CBP detained 17,106. Over 200,000 of the migrants are children. Some eventually end up in Pasadena at the International Academy, where they continue their education and learn English. Many of these students embark on these harrowing journeys for a chance at a better life. They left behind their home country and said goodbye to their family, friends and everything they’ve ever known.

The Sinaloa Cartel and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) used the two cities to wage a proxy war. In 2017, two years after Rodriguez left, Guatemalan officials declared a “state of siege” in Tajumulco and Ixchiguán as the violence came to head. Rodriguez could do nothing as his family sheltered in place to avoid the violence. As Rodriguez continued his schooling at the academy, he often worked a few jobs on the side. After school, he’d work long hours as a busboy at restaurants, hoping to save enough money to move his family out of Tajumulco. Now he’s working in construction, doing anything from plumbing to installing drywall. “I always try to help them by sending money,” Rodriguez said. Rodriguez remembers the exact day that he earned enough money to move his family out of Tajumulco: Sept. 20, 2019. Rodriguez is grateful for the help that the teachers at the academy gave him, but with a new house in Guatemala, he knows he wants to return to his family. “It’s too difficult to move them here,” Rodriguez said. “It’s more expensive than (just) sending money to them in Guatemala.” Arlington Pacheco For as long as Arlington Pacheco could remember, he just wanted to make his parents proud. “I know to focus on my studies and make them proud,” Pacheco said. Born in New Jersey and raised in Guatemala, Pacheco returned to the U.S. to study and hopefully become an engineer. He wanted to get a better education and learn English so he could eventually make more money. According to the World Bank, while Guatemala is the largest economy in Central America, it has the fifth-lowest GDP per capita in Latin America and the Caribbean. Pacheco left for America and eventually found himself at the International Academy. He knew the consequences of his decision to leave Guatemala. While he still video chats and occasionally visits his parents, he still misses their presence when they are apart. “I always go see them, I went to see them for vacation on spring break,” Pacheco said. “I know they are always thinking about me so I know they care.” The pandemic made the situation worse, as fears of contracting the virus loomed overhead. Pacheco was far away from the one thing that he held dear to his heart: his parents. “They’re everything to me,” Pacheco said. “I wish they could be here with me, but they are not…I wish I could hug them right now, but I can’t.” However, even on his loneliest days, Pacheco stayed determined to carve his path in America. He eventually wants to go to school in Minnesota. Kimberly Aguilar At 14 years old, Kimberly Aguilar didn’t understand why her parents wanted to leave El Salvador. “I didn’t want to go,” said Aguilar, who is now 17. “I didn’t even want to begin the journey. I didn’t want to come to the U.S., I couldn’t understand how this would be a better opportunity.” She bickered with her parents before finally giving in after seeing gang violence ravage towns across El Salvador. El Salvador has the highest homicide rates in the entire world. According to World Population Review, the homicide rate currently sits at 82.84 per 100,000 residents – a dramatic drop from its peak of over 100 homicides per 100,000 residents one year before Aguilar attempted her first border crossing. At first, Aguilar’s father left by himself to blaze a trail and after a few months, the rest of the family followed. Unfortunately, they were caught by the Mexican immigration authorities and sent back to El Salvador. They eventually received asylum in Mexico, but still wanted to go to the U.S. After a few months, they tried and succeeded to get to the Mexican-American border; however, the family had to make a difficult decision. “They had told him that if both parents came, they wouldn’t allow (my brother) to come,” Aguilar said. “But if it was just my mom and us, they would allow us to cross.” Her father decided to stay behind and allow his family to cross the border into the U.S. He still lives in Mexico and occasionally talks to his daughter over the phone. Aguilar has been in the U.S. for two years, but still misses the subtleties of El Salvador and her father, who still resides in Mexico. “I miss my family and the food,” Aguilar said. “There’s El Salvadorean food here, but it doesn’t taste the same.”

Los Angeles County’s overall total is currently 1,245,120 confirmed cases and 24,389 fatalities. About 250 patients are hospitalized in the county with 17% in the intensive care units. The county currently represents 34% of infections and 39% of California’s deaths. Public health officials are urging businesses to monitor and closely follow regulations as the state’s reopening is in less than one week. • According to the Pasadena Public Health Department, nearly 70% of Pasadena residents over the eligible age of 12 have been fully vaccinated. 82.5% of city residents have received at least one dose of the two-dose regimens. The average infection rate in Pasadena declined to 1.1 over the prior week. The Huntington Hospital reported five admitted COVID-19 patients with one in the intensive care unit. As vaccinations increase, COVID-19 cases and deaths have been declining and the pandemic seems to be steadily coming to a close. • The parent company of the Ralphs grocery chain recently announced an incentive drive for those who get vaccinated at its stores to win $1 million or free groceries for a year. The giveaway program will award $1 million to five winners who get vaccinated at any Kroger Co. location. Fifty people will win free groceries for a whole year. Named the #CommunityImmunity Giveaway, the program was designed to incentivize more adults to get vaccinated. The giveaway started on June 3 and will continue until Saturday, July 10. The giveaway is open to anyone ages 18 and older who receives or has already received at least one dose at a Kroger Co. location. — Information compiled by staff writer Doyoon Kim.

With the sun shining bright and their families watching from the bleachers, the almost 1,100 graduates took turns taking pictures with their new diplomas. “It’s a good day. It’s one of these formal rites of passage that is very important,” said PUSD board president Scott Phelps. “How many things are there in life that (are like this).” Phelps also hoped that the ceremony shows the students that they can achieve anything they put their minds to, despite any obstacles or barriers. Officials, such as Superintendent Dr. Brian McDonald, also remarked on the significance of having an in-person graduation after many — including his own daughter — missed out on it last year. “Having it in-person is special but having it in the Rose Bowl is even more special,” he said.

There’s money buried in your backyard. And you don’t need a shovel to find it. Learn how home equity can help you fund a better retirement. It’s a well-known fact that for many older Americans, the home is their single biggest asset, often accounting for more than 45% of their total net worth. And with interest rates near all-time lows while home values are still high, this combination creates the perfect dynamic for getting the most out of your built-up equity. But, many aren’t taking advantage of this unprecedented period. According to new statistics from the mortgage industry, senior homeowners in the U.S. are now sitting on more than 8.05 trillion dollars* of unused home equity.
It’s a fact: no monthly mortgage payments are required with a government-insured HECM loan; however the borrowers are still responsible for paying for the maintenance of their home, property taxes, homeowner’s insurance and, if required, their HOA fees. Today, HECM loans are simply an effective way for homeowners 62 and older to get the extra cash they need to enjoy retirement. Although today’s HECM loans have been improved to provide even greater financial protection for homeowners, there are still many misconceptions.

All things considered, it’s not surprising that more than a million homeowners have already used a government-insured Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM) loan to turn their home equity into extra cash for retirement.
For example, a lot of people mistakenly believe the home must be paid off in full in order to qualify for a HECM loan, which is not the case. In fact, one key advantage of a HECM is that the proceeds will first be used to pay off any existing liens on the property, which frees up cash flow, a huge blessing for seniors living on a fixed income. Unfortunately, many senior homeowners who might be better off with a HECM loan don’t even bother to get more information because of rumors they’ve heard.

Reverse mortgage loan terms include occupying the home as your primary residence, maintaining the home, paying property taxes and homeowners insurance. Although these costs may be substantial, AAG does not establish an escrow account for these payments. However, a set-aside account can be set up for taxes and insurance, and in some cases may be required. Not all interest on a reverse mortgage is tax-deductible and to the extent that it is, such deduction is not available until the loan is partially or fully repaid. AAG charges an origination fee, mortgage insurance premium (where required by HUD), closing costs and servicing fees, rolled into the balance of the loan. AAG charges interest on the balance, which grows over time. When the last borrower or eligible non-borrowing spouse dies, sells the home, permanently moves out, or fails to comply with the loan terms, the loan becomes due and payable (and the property may become subject to foreclosure). When this happens, some or all of the equity in the property no longer belongs to the borrowers, who may need to sell the home or otherwise repay the loan balance. zita Milanian has a mission to stop child trafficking. To spread awareness of the prevalent issue around the United States, Milanian is hosting a walk/run through her 501(c)(3) nonprofit called Children of One Planet at Farnsworth Park in Altadena at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 12. The event is also running virtually until July 9. To register, visit childrenofoneplanet.com. The event includes a Children of One Planet T-shirt and mask for each participant. “This walk/run virtual event is something that I want to happen all over the United Stated that people can do it on their own,” said Milanian, the founder and president of Children of One Planet. “Eventually the momentum will start and will show how when we can be together, we can help the children against children trafficking.” Milanian said she hopes the movement to stop child trafficking picks up. “Because of being an engineer (at NASA), I have a lot of practical solutions for the things that people say are impossible,” Milanian said. “I don’t believe anything is impossible. It’s just hard work, but anything can happen if people get together and try to stop it.”

Children of One Planet hosts walk to stop child trafficking

Azita Milanian founded the 501 (c)(3) nonprofit Children of One Planet in 2000 to help children around the world no matter their race or religion.
How it started Milanian founded Children of One Planet in 2000 following an event in 1998 that changed her life. During one of her hikes near her Altadena home with her three black Labradors, Milanian’s dogs stopped randomly at a small pile of dirt on the trail. She thought it was an animal, but upon further inspection saw that it was an abandoned newborn baby. She rushed the baby to the hospital and did all that she could to make sure that he survived. He was less than 3 hours old. After a long stay in the hospital, where they dubbed the baby “Christian,” the infant later named Matthew Christian Whitaker, was adopted and Milanian never thought she would hear from him again. Twenty years later, the two met after they appeared on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show. “In 1998 when I found the baby that is when it was clear that this was my destiny (to help children),” Milanian said. “I quit my job in engineering and I started as a clothing designer because I thought that it would be a tool to raise money independently from a company or organization.” Milanian created her ballroom dance and clothing company Tosca Evening and Dancewear to help raise funds to donate to children in need worldwide. “When I started (Children of One Planet), I wanted to be able to do humanitarian stuff for children but, at the same time, to live I was working very hard for my (ballroom) company and doing Children of One Planet on the side,” Milanian said. “Last year was not the best for a lot of people but I used it as time for planning things to be able to help during COVID to be able to expand my nonprofit and go full time on my nonprofit and part time on my clothing company.” People she knew for 20 to 30 years were retiring or had more free time because of COVID-19, so several of them joined the Children of One Planet board. “When COVID started, I started making masks to give to the children at children hospitals and foster homes and children orphanages,” Milanian said. “But then my clients (for my ballroom company) started buying masks and the money from the masks helped several countries with a food crisis. Milanian hopes the money raised for this walk will be used to install banners and posters in parks around the United States to help educate families about child trafficking. “Now that people are going outside more, we want to put the banners and posters right at the entrance to allow them to talk and in schools too,” Milanian said. “All of this money is for more education to be able to expand our YouTube channel and bring in a motivational speaker or bring in a victim of child trafficking and so forth. “Most of the things that we do are educational, but we are trying to talk to the president to advise him that this is a very big problem in America.” According to Milanian, “every 40 seconds a child is kidnapped, and people don’t know about it.” Milanian hopes this walk will help fund proper education for families to learn more about children trafficking in America as well as counseling and nutritional services for children in foster care to help provide a ground base for them to have a better future. “This is going to be something that I will be doing for the rest of my life,” Milanian said.
Arcadia High School’s badminton team shows off its CIF Open Division championship win.

T
he Arcadia High School badminton program defeated the eight-time defending champions, Diamond Bar High School, 13-8 in the CIF Open Division championship. This marks the Apaches’ first CIF championship. Diamond Bar and Arcadia have been the top competition in the open division since it was applied to badminton in 2018. In 2018 and 2019, Arcadia was the runner-up, and was on track to be in the championship again, but the pandemic canceled the season. Once the 2021 season rolled around, the Apaches took off, and secured the top seed in the CIF Open Division tournament. From there, they made their way to a championship with a 17-4 win over Rowland High School, and then onto Diamond Bar for the overall team victory. “It felt nice to win the championship,” said Arcadia head coach Mike Stiles. “There was a feeling more of relief that we finally slayed the dragon.” Stiles was the key factor in putting Arcadia Apaches on the map for badminton. A former CIF champion and a club level player in college, Stiles was the president of the athletic booster club when he caught wind of the rising student interest in badminton. He and fellow supporters petitioned the administration, and they were granted a team. During the cancellation of the 2020 season, the team was uncertain as to how it would move forward. Stiles felt the 2020 team was primed to win if the season had happened. With the cancellation came graduation and the loss of key players. But with new recruits and returning players, the team was still set for success. “Frankly, we thought last year was going to be our year,” Stiles said. “But we came back really strong. We brought in new freshmen, this year’s sophomore class really improved over the time and the kids now have their bragging rights.” One of the instrumental players in this road to bragging rights is spearheaded by senior captain, Melody Yang. A four-year player for the Apaches, Yang was a star from the start. She was the first female player to win a league title for the Apaches. But in true captain form, she diverted her attention from singles competition to help the Apaches in doubles. During the 2021 season, Yang missed the beginning for COVID-19 safety concerns, but returned to lead the team to the championship. “When she returned to the fold that was the final piece that brought us all together,” Stiles said. “I think that she was the glue that kind of keeps everyone together.” But Stiles stressed this was a true team effort, mentioning the importance of players such as Andrea Lou, Kathy Liu, Pauline Tong, Reanne Chan, Emmery Chang, Matthew Li, Andrew Wu, Arnold He, Angelina Chai and Ethan Chin. “We are a cohesive unit,” Stiles said. “I would argue that we are more team, than any other badminton team in CIF, or any other badminton program in in California.” Looking forward, the Apaches will be losing seniors to graduation, including Yang, He and Chin, but the team will be almost the same pushing forward into the 2022 season, and is hunting for its second straight CIF title. “Next year, we expect to be exactly where we were this year. We are going to be playing for a title, if everything goes right, and we should be winning the title again.” Stiles said.

Anthony Ramos, left center, stars as Usnavi, and Melissa Barrera, right center, appears as Vanessa in Warner Bros. Pictures’ “In the Heights.”
Emotional, upbeat ‘Heights’ recalls old Hollywood
“I
n the Heights” stars Olga Merediz and Jimmy Smits say their musical masterpiece is the perfect antidote to a rough 18 months. “It’s balanced with emotional and deep moments, but there’s a lot of happiness and joy,” said Merediz, who plays the matriarch Abuela Claudia. “The musical numbers are just right. The music cuts right through to you, and Jon Chu has done an amazing, amazing job with his incredible visuals. I think people are really going to resonate with the characters, and I think people are really going to enjoy it.” With a wide smile, Smits said “ditto,” but he takes it a step further. “We’ve also had to reckon with a lot of social issues in the past year and a half,” said Smits, who plays Kevin Rosario, a father who butts heads with his ambitious daughter. “We’re hoping that this film provides joy. Musicals tend to be uplifting and inspirational, but the universal themes resonate very strongly. I think this film is something all audiences will be able to grasp.” Set to hit screens on Friday, June 11, “In the Heights” fuses Lin-Manuel Miranda’s music and lyrics with director Chu’s lively eye for storytelling. Chu also directed 2018’s “Crazy Rich Asians.” The film takes viewers to the streets of Washington Heights, where the scent of cafecito caliente hangs in the air outside of the 181st Street subway stop. Led by bodega owner Usnavi (Anthony Ramos, “A Star is Born”), the tight-knit, multicultural community shares its dreams and wishes with each other — in the hopes of paving a way out, while maintaining its ties to Washington Heights. “I hope people recognize themselves and see themselves and feel proud,” Merediz said. Smits added that viewers mustn’t live in Washington Heights to feel for the characters. “I’m sure you had your nanas, your grandmothers and that,” he said. “The city might be different, and the cultural specificity might be a little different, but the feelings of community and family and how the generation who comes here from another place has expectations for their (children and grandchildren) are all the same.
“Those are universal things.” Merediz starred as Abuela Claudia in the stage version of “In the Heights.” She’s excited to spread her character’s word among the mass of movie lovers. “I wanted to give Claudia the platform she deserves,” said Merediz, referring to her character’s age. “She’s a character who is overlooked in our society. It’s just such a youth-oriented society. It gives me such pleasure to give her that platform.” She explained that she enjoyed translating the stage version for film, although it was a little challenging. “The difference is, on stage, you’re delivering to the last row and you’re doing things chronologically. In a film, everything is very internal, and you shoot out of sequence. That is a challenge for an actor to keep your place, to where you are to keep that flow and that intensity of the moment in the song. It was definitely challenging, but I was up for the challenge. I’d do it again in a heartbeat.” “In the Heights” will be available in cinemas and on HBO Max. Smits and Merediz said that although it will be available to watch at home, “In the Heights” is worthy of a trip to the movie theater. “The film has to be seen in the cinema,” Merediz said. “These huge numbers are epic, and they need the biggest screen you have. I know in the past year we were in lockdown. We didn’t have a choice. “I think it’s a good idea to have the option to see it in the movies and also at home if you don’t have the ability to go to the cinema. I hope people see it in the theater.” The singing and dancing numbers can translate to a cellphone or computer, but Smits agrees — go to the cinema. “Jon’s chosen to give these visual flourishes to old Hollywood,” he added. “It takes your breath away. He really did such a great job. I hope we bring richness, light and happiness to their (cinemagoers’) lives. After the horrible year that we’ve had, people are ready for a film like this.”

hen there are world-class artists in an organization, giving them free rein can create works of stunning beauty and breathtaking sights. The Pasadena Civic Ballet (PCB) hosts two artists-in-residence — prima ballerina Petra Conti and her husband, Eris Nezha, also a world-renowned dancer — who are producing a classic outdoors for two romantic nights. Conti has been a principal dancer with La Scala Theatre Ballet in Milan, Boston Ballet and Los Angeles Ballet. She was a guest artist for ballet companies around the world from Verona to the Ukraine to Russia. Nezha is an international principal dancer who was born in Albania and moved to Italy when he was 15 to pursue a ballet career. He was a principal dancer at La Scala Theatre Ballet and toured across Europe and Asia. He was also a principal dancer for the Boston Ballet and Los Angeles Ballet. This spring, they approached the PCB artistic directors about putting on a ballet for which both are known, the challenging and intricate classic “Giselle.” The ballet’s titular character is a peasant who falls in love with a deceitful nobleman who breaks her heart, causing her to die. In the second half, angry spirits try to take revenge for her and she must choose between forgiveness or an eternity in pursuit of revenge. “They had this idea to present a truncated version,” said Gina Baffo, marketing and outreach manager for PCB. “Because things were still opening up, they had this idea that they would do a condensed version under the stars.”
Ballet takes advantage of shadowy ambiance Performances on June 12 and June 13 begin at 8 p.m. so that the first act — one filled with courting and light-hearted village scenes — takes place in natural, golden lighting at sunset. The second act, which is dark and filled with ghostly spirits, will take place after dark. The ballet will be presented outdoors in the Gazebo Salon at Pasadena Civic Ballet. The intimate setting lets people experience this ballet in a far more intimate and close up setting than is typical with classical ballets. Conti and Nezha will dance the principal roles, ones they have performed many times. Conti is renowned for her interpretation of the mad scene. The two guest artists have adapted the choreography of Yvette Chauviré to fit in the smaller space. The artistic directors embraced the idea of the ballet, as “Giselle” is one of Conti’s signature roles, a coveted part among ballerinas. “She performed it quite a bit in Europe,” Baffo said. “I think there is a personal love for her and Eris of this ballet.” The two of them are working with the dancers in the company, passing on their talents and skills to the advanced pre-professional youth. “It is a once-in-a-lifetime experience to be trained (by the artists) and for Petra and Eris to pass along their knowledge and expertise,” Baffo said. “That’s how ballet gets passed from generation to generation.”

Southern California blues veteran Kim Wilson is gearing up for two performances at Matt Denny’s Ale House in Arcadia.

s venue operators and artists gingerly navigate restrictions surrounding live music and anticipate California’s June 15 reopening, blues promoter Cadillac Zack has begun hosting shows again. This Saturday, Southern California blues veteran Kim Wilson (best known as the harmonica-packing frontman for the Fabulous Thunderbirds) will give two performances backed by Nathan James & the Rhythm Scratchers on the outdoor patio of Matt Denny’s Ale House in Arcadia. Those shows follow three others Zack presented across the Southland last weekend with blues guitarist Kirk Fletcher, including one at Matt Denny’s. The venue rebuilt the wall facing its patio after a windstorm last February tore down brickwork and cabinetry and otherwise damaged the space. “It was a little bit under the radar,” Zack said of the shows. “They all sold out. People were really looking forward to seeing something, as you can imagine. It was outside, we took temperatures, and everybody had to present vaccine cards at the gate.” Wilson is widely respected for his burly performance style and encyclopedic understanding of blues music and history. After moving to Austin from California in the 1970s, he was mentored by Muddy Waters, and in 1974 founded the Fabulous Thunderbirds with guitarist Jimmie Vaughan. The band’s Dave Edmunds-produced 1986 hit “Tuff Enough” made them a commercial force for a time, but their most enduring legacy is how their dynamic live shows helped reignite interest in roadhouse blues. By the 1990s, Wilson was dividing his time between the T-Birds and solo recordings and tours. Hopefully Saturday’s sets will include songs from his gritty 2020 album “Take Me Back: The Bigtone Sessions.” Wilson’s early show quickly sold out, and Zack expects the second will too (there will be a waiting list in case of cancellations). But more live blues shows are planned for summer. Other shows booked thus far in Arcadia and Monrovia feature Laith Al-Saadi, Guitar Shorty, the Atomic 44s, Chris Cain, Josh Smith and Jimmy Vivino; Sugarmill Slim is slated to play the Copper Still Grill in Monrovia June 19. Whether county restrictions will still mandate small audiences for those shows remains an open question. “It’s all going to depend on the metrics of the 15th,” Zack said. “I can’t even make a prediction until they tell me because LA County, which has jurisdiction over that area, makes their own rules. They can override whatever the governor says, so I’m hoping they’re going to say, ‘Yeah, 100% capacity,’ but if you call people at the county, they say, ‘We won’t know until the 15th.’ … It’s a total guessing game as to what’s going to happen. It’s excruciating.”

Performance to fill the night with lilting strains of live music Conti and Nezha reached out to another artist they knew, Maestro Daniel Suk, the artistic director and conductor of Dream Orchestra Los Angeles. Thirty members of the orchestra will perform the music live during the ballet. Suk first became acquainted with Conti when he was in Italy and saw her perform. When she came to LA, he thought it would be an incredible opportunity to work with her. Baffo said dancing to live accompaniment can be exhilarating because anything can happen. “The most beautiful moment can happen and the most challenging moment can happen,” Baffo said. “That adds excitement to the performance.” Some changes have been made to the classical ballet. It will be shorter than is traditional, only an hour and 15 minutes rather than the usual two-plus hours. The story line has been streamlined and Suk has condensed the score. With the outdoor gazebo space, the footprint is smaller than the standard stage, which introduces alterations to the choreography. The 25-person cast is being clothed in traditional period costumes. They will dance in front of a layered fabric collage that is flowing and billowy, designed to be fluid and visually represent the progression of distinctive moods between Act I and Act II. The two-night production of the romantic ballet is offered up as a feast for those who have been hungering to experience the arts live. “It is the Super Bowl of ballets,” Baffo said. “‘Giselle’ is one of the timeless classics. We know we can’t be in a theater right now, but we want to come and see a beautiful prima ballerina perform a show she is very well known for and do it in a manner that is community building.” Baffo suspects the evening could be emotionally charged because of its beauty and the stirring, romantic music. The story is romantic, but also tragic. It reflects the gambit of emotions that many people have traversed since the start of the pandemic. It is, she said, something people don’t often get to experience. “This idea of world-class performers performing essentially in our backyard is really an incredible opportunity,” Baffo said. “This is a salon setting. It is very up close and personal, which you don’t commonly get. When you see it in a theater, you’re set back and there is a lot of lighting, staging and theatrical production. This is up close and personal. That makes it a very different experience.”

Pasadena’s increasing rents have outpaced tenants’ wages and salaries and contributed to the City’s housing unaffordability. Unaffordable housing is the leading cause of homelessness in Pasadena, especially among seniors. Lack of just cause eviction protections and limits on rent increases continue to lead to the permanent displacement of the City’s long-time residents, especially among Black and Brown households. Stabilizing rents and creating just cause eviction protections will ensure that Pasadena may remain a welcoming, inclusive, income diverse community. /s/ Ryan Bell 5/18/21 /s/ Michelle White 5/18/21 /s/ Anita Mackey 5/18/2021 The Pasadena City Attorney has prepared the following

Rent Control. State rent control law provides rent caps of a certain amount, with exemptions, and applies to certain rental units that are 15 years old or older. State law also limits the application of local rent control to units constructed prior to February 1, 1995. The proposed Measure would apply further caps on covered rental units. For units covered by the Measure, rental rates would be capped at the amount paid on May 17, 2021 for residential units occupied on that date, or the rent paid when a tenant first occupies the unit after May 17, 2021. This “Base Rent” can only be increased as provided for in the Measure, through an “Annual General Adjustment,” or by a “Petition for Upward Adjustment” of rent. The Measure would establish a Rental Housing Board (“Board”) whose duties would include setting the allowable Annual General Adjustment by which landlords could increase rent. The allowable rent increase would be less than the increase in the Consumer Price Index. Under certain conditions the Board can deny an increase in rent. The Board would also consider Petitions for Upward Adjustment of rent if a landlord can show that the Base Rent does not allow a fair return on investment. Tenants may also file a Petition for Downward Adjustment in rent if the landlord fails to maintain a habitable premises. Eviction Protections, Relocation Assistance, and Moving Expenses. State law provides statewide just cause eviction requirements with payment of relocation expenses, with exemptions. The Measure would apply more protective requirements, by requiring landlords to prove to the Board that certain circumstances existed to justify eviction. The Measure establishes procedures to be followed prior to any just cause eviction. Pasadena Municipal Code Chapter 9.75 requires landlords, in certain circumstances, to provide qualified tenants with relocation assistance and a moving expense allowance. The Measure would modify the amounts and availability of these benefits. The Measure also requires landlords to, in certain circumstances, provide a tenant the right to return to the rental unit if a vacated rental unit is returned to the market. Rental Housing Board Autonomy. The Board would have the responsibilities discussed above, and authority to impose on landlords an annual Rental Housing Fee to fina n c e i ts e x p e n s e s . Th e Measure authorizes the Board to establish its own budget, hire staff, and maintain a Rental Registry. The Measure requires the City Council to appoint Board members. The Board would otherwise be independent from the City Council, City Manager, and City Attorney. Effect of Measure. Since the Measure would amend the
