•CONSIDER THIS•
My boss is a tyrant: I’d quit, except I work for myself By Ellen Snortland Pasadena Weekly Columnist
S
elf-employed for most of my adult life, I gave many of my friends and family conniptions by not having the security of a “regular” job. They had unvarying hours, paid vacation days and benefits. On the other hand, they often envied my independence. While I love my freedom, I also experience job tyranny — from myself! Sometimes I hate my boss for being so rigid. She’s a dictator. I have now gone on strike and refuse to work on weekends. Radical, isn’t it? I am getting even more revolutionary: I’m adopting the motto used by the worker’s movement in the 1890s: “Eight hours for work, eight hours for rest, and eight hours for what you will.” I have to “work” on that, but I am getting better at apportioning my time. I don’t know precisely how, why or when I got into habitual nonstop working 24/7. I suspect my workaholism came from watching my dad. He had to have a project; he couldn’t sit still. Both my parents were farm people, and livestock doesn’t take weekends off. “That’s OK. You can skip feeding us for two days,” said no horse or cow, ever. Unlike my aunts and uncles on both sides, we didn’t take vacations when I was a kid. No camping or family trips except to visit relatives, which, while fun for us kids, my parents regarded as torture. They’d rather slam their fingers in a car door than simply hang out and visit. I’m only now learning how to have social time that doesn’t drive me into a guilt trip. Good grief, Snortland — even Article 24 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights acknowledges rest and leisure as a human right! Thanks to the United Nations, I can alter my life. The trouble is, exploitative people are all around us. My husband Ken, in particular, has people who think nothing of texting him at 3 a.m. or calling at 7 a.m. on a Sunday morning. Sorry folks, the Tech Daddy is closed! I remember a time when everything was closed on Sundays. Unless and until more of us set boundaries, employers and clients will never leave freelancers alone. A theater person from high
school on, we only had one “dark” day on Mondays. But unless and until I get back into theater, I will not drive myself the way I have. I just won’t. The “retire at 65” boat left the dock years ago. Retirement used to be part of the American Dream for middle- and working-class folks. The death (or at least comatose condition) of trade unions combined with the gig economy has left many people working two to three jobs just to make ends meet. Retirement? With the economy in the crapper since 2008, that’s not going to ever happen for my hubby or me. I’m not really complaining, although it sounds like I am. I can’t say that I ever dreamed of leisure time after turning 65. I saw so many people who retired, and it sent them into a downward spiral. I know one person intimately who dreamed of early retirement and, after taking it at 55, drank themselves into a stupor. Twenty years later, it’s a miracle their liver hasn’t “retired.” I have wrestled with the idea of taking two months off from the creative writing classes I teach four times a week. That’s been my bread and butter; I have been teaching live classes weekly since 2002 and switched smoothly to Zoom for the lockdown. But two months not teaching? That seems so scary! What if no one wants to work with me when we come back? What if people get used to not writing? I brought up my concerns with my class today, and the reaction was, “That sounds great!” “Yes, let’s take two months off! “I was going to suggest that anyway.” “Don’t worry, we’ll be back. We love you.” I live by the Eleanor Roosevelt admonition to “do one thing every day that scares you,” and I could tell bringing up a two-month hiatus with my students terrified me — so I did it. It would have been more timely to write this column for Labor Day, but I couldn’t wait, because the issues of work-related hours are in people’s faces and spaces right now. Why? While sheltering at home during the pandemic, many employee ranks have also been working from home, and they got used to it. Many people don’t want to go back to their offices. There’s fear of contagion, but there’s also the dread of traffic and endless meetings. I know quite a few commuting workers who gained an average of two or more hours per day because they didn’t have to fight traffic. Quality of life, people! Who knows, I may even promote the idea that Ken and I take a vacation. I know it’s crazy, but I’ve heard that some people do it. Ellen Snortland has written “Consider This…” for a heckuva long time, and she also coaches first-time book authors! Contact her at ellen@beautybitesbeast.com.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY • Historian examines Pasadena’s evolution after the 1918 flu By Matthew Rodriguez Pasadena Weekly Deputy Editor

ince the COVID-19 pandemic started, historians have compared the 1918 or Spanish flu to the coronavirus. “It is amazing (to see) the parallels to what is happening today,” said Pasadena Museum of History’s Brad Macneil. Macneil is the curator of the museum’s “Starting Anew: Transforming 1890-1930,” which explores one of the most pivotal eras in Pasadena history. Released early last year but cut short due to the novel coronavirus, “Starting Anew” was altered by Macneil and his colleagues to show how Pasadena emerged from World War I and the 1918 influenza. Through his research, he found many similarities to the COVID-19 pandemic. “They did all the things that were recommended today,” the curator emeritus said. “They closed down at different times through the flu. They closed down large public gatherings, including churches.” In addition to these measures, Macneil found that schools temporarily closed, and Pasadena required masks and a quarantine. “When they started enforcing the mask ordinance, the chief of police said that this was the hardest thing he’d ever had to enforce in his life,” Macneil said. “They would arrest and fine you if you weren’t wearing the proper type of mask.” During this time, residents banded together to extinguish the virus. According to Macneil, those who did not wear masks were branded as unpatriotic. That was the standard of life for two years as the decade closed. After a war that killed over 100,000 Americans and the flu that claimed 500 million lives worldwide — 675,000 of whom were in the United States — Pasadena and the rest of the world celebrated the end of a disastrous decade. They built memorials for the soldiers who died in WWI and began to quietly move on from the pandemic. “We have the memorial flagpole on Colorado and Orange Grove and some other memorials around the city, but people sort of put it behind them,” Macneil said. As the world and the city moved past the 1918 flu, Pasadena’s economy, population and stance in American culture grew exponentially. “For the next 10 years until the Depression, the city just boomed,” Macneil said. “Lots of wonderful things were going on in Pasadena.” He attributes this boom to residents working together following a devastating three years. From 1920 to 1930, Pasadena’s population nearly doubled from 45,354 to 76,086. Many people from across the country, especially from colder climates, moved to the city to avoid the harsh conditions of the winter and enjoy the sunny skies in Pasadena. As the number of visitors increased, Pasadena evolved and built hotels and other attractions to bring in more tourists and, possibly, new residents. In the early 1900s, the City Beautiful movement started and called for municipalities to invest in grand buildings and structures in the hopes that they would improve the quality of life. In the 1920s, Pasadena built new schools such as Marshall and Washington Junior High School and continued to develop the California Institute of Technology. Colorado Boulevard area was developed, and the civic center came to life with Pasadena City Hall, Central Library and later the Civic Center. To accommodate the annual football game, the Tournament of Roses raised funds to design and build the iconic Rose Bowl. “The Civic Center, California Institute of Technology and the Rose Bowl are just three architectural icons widely identified with Pasadena today,” Macneil said. With the exhaustive research Macneil poured into his exhibit, he hopes that patrons realize that anything could be achieved if people work toward a common goal. “I think by looking back at this history, I think you can learn how when people come together with common goals they can accomplish a lot,” he said. Macneil’s exhibit, “Starting Anew,” will resume in the fall following the reopening of the Pasadena Museum of History.

The original Busch Gardens opened in 1905 by Adolphus Busch.
A Pasadena ‘O.G.’ — original garden

ention Busch Gardens and most people would probably think of the thrill-ride theme parks in Williamsburg, Virginia and Tampa. But how many know that Pasadena was home to the original tourist attraction? Anheuser Busch Brewing Association President Adolphus Busch opened Busch Gardens in Pasadena in 1905. Featuring terraced hillsides, waterfalls, ponds and miles of scenic paths, the original Busch Gardens was one of Southern California’s first mega-parks. Nearing retirement age and not in the best of health, Busch and his wife came to Pasadena in 1904 to search for a winter home, that eventually included 38 acres, on Orange Grove Avenue. With Pasadena celebrating a birthday, who better to speak about the gardens than author and historian Michael Logan, who recently published a tome with fellow historian, the late Gary Cowles, called, “The Original Busch Gardens: Adolphus Busch’s Gift to Pasadena, California.” Logan and Cowles also curated a popular exhibit at Pasadena Museum of History to celebrate the gardens’ centennial. “I’ve always liked the history of old places and started collecting postcards of the area and some of them were Busch Gardens,” said Logan, who came to Pasadena with his wife in 1999. “Once I went down there and started seeing things, that kind of hooked me. I think Gary and I uncovered every Arroyo stone possible to find everything we could about Busch Gardens.” The book project was 18 years in the making, with the team starting its research in 2001. “The initial few years of research was in preparation for our 2005 museum exhibit,”
Gnomes & a garden of his own Logan believes that Adolphus Busch became interested in ornate gardens after seeing other famous gardens and wanted to create one of his own. “Actually, at his German estate in the 1890s, he opened the world’s first garden gnomes park. In Pasadena, he used many of the same German statuary,” Logan said. According to Logan, 1915 marked the peak year for visitors to Pasadena Busch Gardens (1.5 million). It closed in 1918 during World War I and reopened in 1920 before closing again from 1928-33. Following a grand reopening with festivities like flower shows and dog shows held in the terraced upper gardens, the gardens finally closed for good in 1938 due to a flood that wiped out part of the lower gardens in addition to the ravages of the great recession. Today, about 60-70 garden apartments occupy most of the area where the upper gardens were, with another 60 or so in the lower gardens. While there were many interesting aspects of the garden in its heyday, Logan has three favorite fun facts. “The Old Mill on Madeline Drive was the most substantial feature of the gardens of which four of the five main attractions survive today,” he said. “The structure was a major construction undertaking built to last decades. “Admission was free from 1906 to 1920 (25 cents for adults and 10 cents for children). Thereafter proceeds benefited charities. Also, a tremendous amount of important Hollywood movies were filmed there, including ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ (1917); ‘Frankenstein’ (1931); ‘It Happened One Night’ (1934) and ‘Gone With the Wind’ (1939).” Logan would like to see the original Busch Gardens commemorated in a manner deserving of such a landmark. “I wish it would become a historical district of some sort, and what I would really like to see is a historical plaque. I think a great place for that would be right at Stone Ridge Drive & Madeline,” he said. “Appreciating our rich history allows us to make more of the same for future generations to enjoy.”

Logan said. “The whole process was very challenging. The research, book preparation, layout and publishing were fun and satisfying. The hardest part was gathering all the attendees’ names and email addresses collected over the years at presentations and walking tours for mass mailers announcing printing of the long-awaited book.” In the aftermath of the centennial exhibit at the Pasadena Museum of History, Logan realized there was so much more new information and images that he felt compelled to share it with others. The 200-page coffee table-style book — delivered just as the pandemic caused everything to shut down in early 2020 — features interviews with individuals who experienced Busch Gardens firsthand, a collection of images (including some “then and now” shots), maps and historic timelines. Five hundred copies were printed, and more than half have been sold so far. A retired restorer of old houses and amateur historian most of his life, Logan shot more than 80 different set of locations for the book’s images, getting permission to gain access to various residential properties to take many of the photos. “This will be the only book about the historic Pasadena Busch Gardens as there is nothing more to add to the story that’s not included within,” he boasted.

Pasadena Museum of History unveils new initiative
A
By Matthew Rodriguez Pasadena Weekly Deputy Editor
fter closing its doors to the public over a year and a half ago, the staff at Pasadena Museum of History are excited to reopen their exhibits with their new initiative. “It’s been tough going, but we’re on even footing,” said executive director Jeannette O’Malley. “We will be reopening to the public and getting our programming built back. It’s going to take a little time to do that but we’re certainly working towards that.” As cases of the novel coronavirus continue to decline, the Pasadena Museum of History announced its new multiyear initiative called “Exploring Pasadena,” which launches on the city’s 135th anniversary on June 19. The project includes many visual and oral presentations including guided tours, trivia and in-person workshops. “This ‘Exploring Pasadena’ initiative gives us a starting point to reach the public and put together a variety of programming and entice them to participate,” said O’Malley. According to O’Malley, the initiative calls for about a dozen programs a year to have residents and visitors discover the vast amount of history in the buildings, parks and places that they pass by every day. “We’re providing the public with a lot of different kinds of opportunities to experience history and also current history as it unfolds,” said O’Malley. Some of the exhibits O’Malley teased are “Pasadena History Quest” and “On Foot in Pasadena.” With help from former Pasadena librarian Dan McLaughlin, the “Pasadena History Quest” will help provide a fun way to share and explore history. “Trivia is always a really fun way to share history,” said O’Malley. “That can be history from all decades, or it can be from yesterday’s newspaper… It just gives you ways to explore.” Following the success of walking tours in the past, especially last year during the pandemic, “On Foot in Pasadena” will be a series of walking tours around the city led by historian Julia Long. “It gives the public a chance to walk around the community… and then go through and look at various historic locations,” said O’Malley. However, with the plethora of programs being released, and although she had a hard time picking a single exhibit, O’Malley is most excited about the “Pasadena Then and Now” program. Traditionally, the exhibit displays photos from the past century and compares them to the current fixtures. However, O’Malley hopes to expand the exhibit to include the recent history from as early as a few years ago. “It’s not always what happened 50 years ago. It could be a photo montage of how the city of Pasadena has changed in the last three or two years. That’s how history evolved,” she said. No matter what the exhibit, tour or workshop it is, O’Malley is excited to have her staff and guests return to the museum after such a long closure. “I can’t wait. I miss the interaction,” she said. “Of course, I miss the staff terribly, but to not be sharing all of this with people, it’s been really, really hard.”

n honor of Juneteenth, My Tribe Rise will host a freedom march and block party. Juneteenth, June 19, is the annual holiday celebrating the anniversary of the end of slavery in the United States. Since the late 1800s, African Americans have gathered to celebrate this day. Although the day has always carried importance, the protests last year and the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and many other Black Americans, garnered renewed interest and significance. “I feel like in a sense we’re still marching for that freedom,” said Heavenly Hughes, co-founder of My Tribe Rise. “We’re still asking for human and civil rights.” While the Emancipation Proclamation issued by President Abraham Lincoln on Jan. 1, 1863, freed slaves on paper, the full implementation of the decree would not be enforced until the end of the Civil War. Following the surrender of Confederate general Robert E. Lee, in the Appomattox, Virginia, Union soldiers began to march to Texas, as the state continued to practice slavery. On June 19, 1865, Union general Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, freeing the 250,000 slaves in Texas, over two and half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Also referred to as “Emancipation Day,” “Jubilee Day” and “Freedom Day,” Juneteenth derives its name from the combination of June and 19. “This is our July 4th, this is our independence day,” said My Tribe Rise co-founder Victor Hodgeson. “This day is very sacred to us because this would be our true day of emancipation for Black folks.” While the day celebrates the end of slavery in the United States, it also serves as a reminder of the atrocities many had to endure. “People were enslaved and treated as animals,” said Dr. Sandra Thomas, board member of the Altadena Historical Society. “They had nothing of their own. They weren’t even entitled to know anything or have their own thoughts.” Thomas hopes the memory of these atrocities motivates others to continue to advocate for civil rights for everyone. “I don’t want people to be discouraged in any way,” Thomas said. “The battle is not over, but it’s come a long way.” Juneteenth also carries renewed significance following the protests against police brutality and killings of African Americans across the country. “We are no longer property,” Hughes said. “We are no longer in chains. We should not be slaughtered, murdered and killed just for our skin being Black.” Hughes, Hodgeson and Thomas hope that Juneteenth will also bring everyone together no matter race or creed. “We’re all in this battle together,” Thomas said. “We’re going to all struggle together and we’re all going to get through it together. We’re all going to be fine together.” The event is open to the public and begins at 4:30 p.m. with a freedom march leading to a block party at Charles White Park, where there will be live music, food trucks, poetry and keynote speakers. Masks and social distancing requirements are still required.

Pasadena Police release May statistics By Tyler Wegleitner Pasadena Weekly Staff Writer
T
he Pasadena Police Department recently released its May community brief, highlighting statistics and information about its calls. According to the brief, Pasadena Police responded to 9,662 calls in May. They have responded to more than 46,000 calls since the beginning of the year. In total, the department received 19,997 calls in May and 5,195 of them were for 911. Pasadena Police used de-escalation techniques more than 250 times last month and seized 24 firearms. So far this year, 155 firearms have been collected. The community brief outlined key incidents where Pasadena Police responded. On May 2, police responded to a call of gunfire and a woman screaming at a restaurant parking lot, where they found evidence of a shooting. Police located a vehicle matching a witness description. The vehicle’s driver denied involvement in the shooting but was brought into custody for possession of a concealed and stolen firearm.
Pasadena Police also arrested a man in connection with vandalism at a local medical facility on May 7. According to the brief, the man involved had vandalized the same facility before. Officers did find a firearm and several BB guns inside his car. Several days later, on the morning of May 9, police received a report of a man “who had thrown scalding water onto a victim.” Police said the incident appeared unprovoked and that the man hurled racial slurs. The man was later arrested, and the victim did not require immediate medical attention. On the evening of May 14, Pasadena Police received a call about a family who had been sitting in a parked car when an unknown person approached and pointed a firearm. The perpetrator later fled the scene and was not found. Pasadena Police arrested someone on May 15 for assault with a deadly weapon following a call about a family dispute. The brief said two people argued and it led to choking and an attempted stabbing. The victim was left with minor injuries. On May 19, officers responded to a call about a woman who verbally and physically assaulted another female. The brief said the woman “told officers she assaulted the victim because of her race.” She was later taken into custody and the other woman was left with minor injuries. A single-vehicle crash near Del Mar Boulevard and Fair Oaks Avenue on May 19 involved a driver who appeared to be under the influence. He admitted to taking prescription medication before the crash. Officers later found that the driver had a high amount of narcotics and cash, along with a gun magazine and loaded firearm. One week later, on May 26, police received a call about an armed robbery of a business. The brief said three people entered the business, stole bottles of prescription medication and that one had a handgun. No injuries were reported from the robbery, but all three people had fled before officers arrived and were not immediately arrested.

ount Wilson Observatory — Southern California’s historic home to over 100 years of astronomical discovery — reopened to the public on June 15. Located on a peak in the San Gabriel Mountains near Pasadena, the observatory closed in early 2020 in accordance with the U.S. Forest Service’s observance of COVID-19 and pandemic safety guidelines. The gates to Mount Wilson’s acreage open at 10 a.m. daily throughout the summer, and close at sunset. Parking is available, and visitors can hike the grounds, gaze at the telescope domes that dot the landscape and browse through the Historic Museum in the lecture hall. Founded by George Ellery Hale in 1904, Mount Wilson Observatory has played host to a who’s who of important figures in 20th century astronomy, including Edwin Hubble, Albert Einstein, Harlow Shapley and Milton Humason. Mount Wilson Observatory features the Snow Solar Telescope (largest in the world from 1905 to 1908 and the mountain’s first installation), a 60-inch telescope (the world’s largest operational telescope from 1908 to 1917) and the 100-inch Hooker telescope, (which featured the world’s largest aperture from 1917 to 1949). Mount Wilson Observatory has a limited number of reservations for night sky viewing on the 60-inch and 100-inch telescopes. These can be booked for evenings throughout the summer. “We’re excited to announce the ‘Discovering Mount Wilson’ campaign in celebration of our history, just as we can now welcome guests from all over the world, back to the mountain top,” said Sam Hale, chairman of the board of trustees, Mount Wilson Institute and grandson of founder George Ellery Hale. “Mount Wilson is unlike any place in the world from both an astronomical viewing and historical standpoint. We’re hoping this campaign will help even more people discover both the rich impact and significant discoveries of this beautiful and important place.” Mount Wilson Institute has independently operated and maintained the Mount Wilson Observatory since 1989 under a long-term agreement with the Carnegie Institution of Washington. Information about fees, available viewing dates and reservation forms for private observation can be found at mtwilson.edu. 06.17.21 | PASADENA WEEKLY 15

CITY OF HOPE HELPS YOUNG ADULT CONQUER CANCER DURING COVID-19 CRISIS BY ABE ROSENBERG
L
Jesus Tamayo strikes a triumphant pose as he celebrates completing cancer treatment at City of Hope.
City of Hope’s Helford Hospital, where Jesus Tamayo was successfully treated for diffuse large B cell lymphoma
ooking at Jesus Tamayo smile, you’d never believe he was forced to battle cancer while simultaneously dealing with multiple medical facilities that dismissed him, misdiagnosed him, turned him away for lack of insurance or simply couldn’t care for him because their beds were filled with COVID-19 patients. Early in 2020, Tamayo felt some pain in his chest that scared him. One brother had developed cancer in the same spot, but Tamayo’s doctors found nothing wrong and told him it was stress. By June, he was feeling worse, so he tried his doctors again. They suspected cartilage inflammation, gave him pain medication and sent him home. That October, Tamayo felt a lump in the center of his chest. At the emergency room, he wanted an ultrasound. The overworked, COVID-19-battered staff said no. Nor could they admit him — beds were now reserved only for patients whose condition was “life-threatening.” Frustrated, Tamayo changed providers and was scheduled for a computed tomography (CT) scan, but he had to wait two weeks and drive out of his way to get it. After the scan, he decided to take matters into his own hands. “I went to Best Buy, put the disc from the CT scan into a computer, downloaded it and sent a copy to everybody — even my brother’s doctor in Mexico. “Everybody told me the same thing: Get a biopsy as fast as you can!” But Tamayo didn’t know where to turn or how he’d afford it, then fate stepped in. Shortly after Tamayo’s CT scan, Nicole A. Karras, M.D., a pediatric oncologist at City of Hope, was having dinner with a friend, a radiologist. They commiserated about the cancer patients whose treatments had been delayed by the pandemic. As an example, the radiologist mentioned someone she had just seen for a CT scan who had a large mass in his chest. It was Tamayo. Karras knew that City of Hope could help. She made a few calls, including City of Hope’s Financial Clearance Services, which helped Tamayo get the coverage he needed. She got everyone on board and within hours Tamayo was in Karras’ office, getting all the tests he needed. Karras originally believed he had a form of sarcoma, but later determined the mass in his chest to be diffuse large B cell lymphoma, one of the more common cancers in young adults and very receptive to chemotherapy — with one caveat. “When these lymphoma cells die,” explained Saro H. Armenian, D.O., M.P.H., who was brought on to help with Tamayo’s case, “they release toxins that can overwhelm the organs.” It’s important to strike the right balance, so Armenian used a special protocol recommended by the Children’s Oncology Group. “It worked amazingly well,” recalled Armenian. After just the first cycle, Tamayo’s cancer had shrunk beyond expectations. “He felt dramatically different right away.” His treatment completed, Tamayo is now “doing great, with an excellent prognosis,” said Armenian, who is looking forward to celebrating “cancer survival birthdays” with Tamayo “for many decades to come.” For more information, visit CityofHope.org or call 626-256-HOPE (4673).

40 West Green Street, Pasadena 626-389-3839, agnesla.com
Agnes’ signature dish includes cornbread eclair, chicken liver mousse with cherries on top.
The salad bar salad boasts mixed greens, cherry tomatoes, Piquillo peppers, butter beans golden beets, sunflower seeds crispy mushrooms, soft boiled egg and French dressing.
Agnes Restaurant & Cheesery opens on Green Street f the opening of Agnes Restaurant & Cheesery was long anticipated by anyone, it was the owners and operators themselves, Thomas and Vanessa Tilaka Kalb. It was over four years ago when they discovered the historic space on Green Street, where Agnes just opened. In the meantime, they kept their plans relatively quiet. It has only been in the last month or so that locals became aware of the impending opening of the new eatery. Fortuitously, Agnes arrives on a tide of popular interest in the Pasadena dining scene and is quickly proving itself as a worthy new neighbor in town. Pasadena was founded by Midwesterners. Deciduous trees, planed by founding families from Ohio, Illinois and Iowa, pepper the area. The executive chef at Agnes, Thomas was born in Iowa City and moved to Cedar Rapids to attend high school. After taking a year off, he enrolled in the well-regarded culinary program at nearby Kirkwood Community College. “I got a great education for $10,000,” Thomas said. “I paid as I (went and graduated) at 21 without any debt. It felt pretty good. It still does actually.” His Midwestern background and sensibility is very much at the new restaurant’s heart and spirit. “Everyone talks about southern hospitality, I wanted to bring up Midwestern hospitality,” Thomas explained. Agnes’s general manager is Kyrsten Salazar, a certified nutritionist and life coach. Vanessa is credited as “head cheese” at Agnes. Indeed, she is the cheese monger responsible for the carefully curated cheeses available from the menu and in the buzzing market. “She’s in charge. She’s the boss,” Thomas said. Vanessa grew up in nearby Montebello, where her parents still live in her childhood home. “My dad’s family had restaurants in Thailand, in Bangkok,” Vanessa said. “I remember hearing stories of my dad growing up in the restaurants. My dad came here in the ’70s,
went to school and he and his brothers opened up Bangkok Market on Melrose. So, I grew up in that grocery store.” After studying business management at Cal State University, Los Angeles and working briefly in human resources, Vanessa opted for the full culinary program at The Art Institute of California in Orange County. “I decided to go to culinary school against my parents’ wishes. I should have been a doctor or a lawyer,” she said. The couple met seven years ago in San Francisco, where they were working at the popular Flour + Water. Thomas oversaw the pasta station, and trained Vanessa at his station before departing on a month-long motorcycle trip. “After I got back from that monthlong sabbatical, she was my boss. She’s been my boss ever since. I like to say I trained her really well,” Thomas noted with a smile. Three years later, the couple married in LA. “I just loved coming down here more and more,” Thomas said. “Also, it was getting too expensive (in San Francisco),” Vanessa recalled. “We were at a point in our lives wondering what we were going to do next. One trip down, we were telling my parents we were considering moving again. My parents said, ‘You should move back home.’” They signed off on their wedding venue and had extra time in the afternoon when they were introduced to the former fire station horse stable on Green Street, which has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1983. A former colleague of Vanessa’s discussed the idea of opening a restaurant with the couple and discovered the space, formerly occupied by and outfitted as a recording studio. Finally, construction on the build-out for the venture began in January of last year, then the pandemic happened in March. “About April, things got crazy,” Thomas said. “Eight construction workers got COVID,

As we were learning about the pandemic, we (told) our general contractor to stop, to erase the schedule.” The couple worked closely with architect Oonagh Ryan of ORA, who was also responsible for the elegant buildout of Auburn on South Lake. “She became our life coach,” Thomas said. “We got really lucky in meeting Tom Courtney, our general contractor. We had the best team in town in putting this all together.” Best known locally as a luxury home builder, it was the first restaurant build-out for Courtney Construction. “We wanted it to feel like a home, coming home to grandma’s was always the whole idea,” Thomas said. Agnes is the name of Thomas’ maternal grandmother. It’s a recurrent theme here. “You show up to grandma’s house, you come home and there’s a buffet of food for you,” Thomas explained. “It’s the love language. Vanessa and I, even though there’s a cultural difference between our families, there’s always that love language of food. There’s always that ‘Have you eaten yet?’ Just a way of showing affection. So that’s where it really started. “It’s regional American cooking, with an emphasis in the Midwest. It’s supposed to evoke comfort, nostalgia, thoughtfulness and that feeling of being taken care of. We wanted to take our culinary expertise, our degrees and our skills and apply it to that type of food.” Menu highlights include a luscious cornbread éclair ($5.95) with chicken liver mousse and black cherries listed under “Snackadoos;” California cheese curds with a buttermilk ranch dressing ($9.99); pineapple-glazed meatballs ($21.99) are served with a poblano chow chow relish and grilled flatbread; the loaded baked potato ravioli ($21.99) features crispy pancetta, broccoli relish, cheddar and crème fraiche with chives. Entrée highlights include crispy steelhead trout ($28.99) and barbecued beef cheeks ($32.99). Vanessa curates a selection of 10 “dessert cheeses” ($7.99 each) grouped under the headings “soft and creamy,” “bold and funky,” “sweet and salty” and “lovely blues.” Pastry chef Vivian Penaloza concocted three dessert options ($10.99 each) including an impressive s’mores cocoa taco. Beverage director and sommelier Liz Kelso manages a limited, accessible list of wines by the glass and bottle, draft and bottled beer, in addition to artisanal cocktails including the Tournament of Roses ($14) with Aperol, prosecco and fresh watermelon, as well as the Crown City ($15) with Buffalo Trace bourbon, Maple Giffard Peche, ginger and lemon. There’s also a kid’s menu that comes with a box of crayons. “We’re a family restaurant in every sense of the word,” Thomas said. “We serve family-style. We’re family owned and operated. We’re family-friendly.” Ultimately, a humble Midwestern lack of pretension prevails here. “It’s not art at the end of the day. I’m not an artist. I’m a curator of delicious storytelling. We’re telling those stories and paying homage to family through our offerings,” Thomas mused. “We’re excited to be here,” Vanessa added. “I grew up shopping on Colorado. We want people to come to Pasadena to see what we have.” The couple lives a block away in Old Town and can be spotted walking their rescue dog, Clementine, in the neighborhood. “Pasadena has been so welcoming,” Thomas said. “The community is awesome. We’re super lucky.” 06.17.21 | PASADENA WEEKLY 19

he tiny kebab shop Mediterranean Café has been quietly doing business in Pasadena since 1997. Tucked discreetly in the pocket of Shoppers Lane, which runs parallel to and just east of South Lake Avenue and services the expansive parking lots behind the bustling business strip. Conceived by the late family patriarch Krikor “Koko” Bogharian and his wife, Sosy, the operation is now helmed by their children, Shant and Aline. “We opened in this location in 2001,” Aline said. “Four years prior (to that), we opened in 1997 in what was then called the Plaza Pasadena Mall, which is now the Paseo. But after the mall had plans to turn it into the Paseo, we relocated to our own spot here on Shoppers Lane.” These days, Shant is the chef and on-site presence, while Aline serves as general manager and spokesperson behind the scenes. “My mom helps as much as she can,” Aline said. “She’s a little bit older now so she can’t be there every single day. I do all of the admin, HR, payroll. It truly is a family business. We don’t try to outsource anything. Even our employees are like family.” The siblings graduated from Maranatha High School in Pasadena. Shant earned a political science degree from UC Irvine, while Aline studied engineering at USC. “She’s got the brains and the looks,” Shant said of his sister. “Without her, I don’t know where I’d be. It’s that working in unison that makes it all work.” The Bogharian family emigrated to Southern California from Beirut in 1994. Koko and Sosy had brothers in Pasadena, so the family landed here. With them, they brought their interest in food and cooking. “He grew up as his mom’s sous chef,” Aline said about Koko. “He was always in the kitchen with my grandma. When we came here, he said, ‘Americans like to eat, and I have good food. So, I’m going to make it.’ He started planning from ’94 to ’97 to open this business.” The family home was Koko’s test kitchen. “We ate chicken kebab every day for months until he perfected his recipe with my mom, giving each other notes,” Aline recalled. The original mall location opened in January 1997. “People fell in love with the food,” Aline said. “We have customers who used to come to the mall, and they still come. They knew my dad by name. They knew me. They knew my brother. We all grew up together. They had their kids and now their kids come and eat from us.” Throughout this time, Shant was working with his father in the kitchen. “I worked with him through high school and college,” Shant said. “My dad needed the help and I wanted to learn the family business. It sparked my own interest in (cooking) and making my own marinades and things at home.” Shant became engaged to be married in 2015 and Koko offered to open another restaurant for Shant. “He said, ‘You know what? Now that you’re taking this step, we’re going to open up another outlet for you and your wife,’” Shant recalled. Unfortunately, Koko was soon diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. “We had to rush our wedding plans,” Shant added. “My father battled pancreatic cancer for one year,” Aline said. “He passed away in 2016. Since then, my mom is sole owner and my brother is the one man show doing everything he can over there.” “This was his place. It was his baby. Every corner here, there’s a piece of him,” Shant added, recalling his father’s dedication to the business. Aline said Shant and Koko prepped everything in the morning. Now it’s all up to Shant.

Chicken shawarma salad and pita are standards but served convincingly. “He’s there at 6 a.m. Everything is made fresh. When we say, ‘made fresh daily’ we mean ‘made fresh daily,’” she said. “He’s at Restaurant Depot at 6 o’clock in the morning and then he goes to the store from 7 to 11 a.m. until we open. He’s prepping everything from scratch. These are all the recipes from my mom and my dad. It’s a family secret. Only he knows it, so only he can do it.” The menu hasn’t changed much over the years and the dishes reflect the staples of the Armenian Middle Eastern diaspora, often described and labeled as “Mediterranean.” At the Mediterranean Café, the Bogharian family recipes can be found in every dish. Highlights include all the standards: chicken kebab or shawarma salad ($12.75/ $14); beef or lamb kebabs ($13.25); falafel plate ($10) served with hummus, lettuce, tomato, tahini and pita bread; baba ghanoush ($5.50/ $9.50) grilled, mashed eggplant with garlic and lemon; stuffed grape leaves ($7.25 for six pieces); the vegetarian combo ($11) is a choice of any four vegetarian or salad items plus two pitas. The “Mediterranean” fare here may be predictable, but, remember, it’s one guy executing actual family recipes every day from scratch. The care, attention and freshness come together in each dish quite convincingly. When the pandemic loomed last March, Shant and Aline found themselves unusually well prepared. The restaurant didn’t have a delivery option previously or an Instagram account. Aline enlisted the third-party delivery services Grubhub and DoorDash just months prior to the lockdown. There was no hard pivot. “If we didn’t have the delivery services, we probably wouldn’t have survived,” Aline said. “We’re a small place. We don’t have the extra staff to be fulfilling deliveries by ourselves. “We’ve had some of our same employees for the last 20 years. This whole year with the pandemic, our priority was always to keep them on board no matter what happened. If it meant having to pay them from our own pockets, that’s what we did. We treat them just as our family. It really, truly is a family business.” Aline explained their business comes from foot traffic. Offices, banks, dentists and medical offices provided the lunchtime crowd. When the pandemic hit, that dissipated. “Everyone around us was gone,” Aline said. “So, our foot traffic almost died.” Still, the Bogharians are grateful for their location, despite the encroaching presence of the nearby chain restaurants. “We love our location,” Aline said. “We love that people can walk from nearby Macy’s or the nearby banks. We’re seeing the same people every day and forging these friendships. They’re not just our customers. They’re our friends too “Pasadena is the new hotspot. It does get a little competitive, but we stay true to what we know. We haven’t changed anything. For 25 years we’ve been here, so obviously we’re doing something that the people like.” The second generation of Bogharians serve the children of Koko’s first guests. The legacy continues to survive. Aline became emotional as she extended her gratitude to their following in Pasadena. “We cannot thank you enough for all the support throughout all the years,” she said. “You hear my voice cracking a little bit. We cannot say thank you enough. We say this with tears in our eyes. The support over the years has been tremendous and without that support we wouldn’t be here. If my dad could see that we’re still here, he would be smiling from ear to ear. It has been an incredible privilege to be part of the Pasadena community for all these years and we thank all of you for your continued support.”

TRAX
BY BLISS BOWEN
OKUTE, Okuté (Chulo): HHHH Eschewing florid contemporary stylings, this Havana-based rumba ensemble focuses on soulful elementals: Pedro “Tata” Francisco Almeida Barriel’s warm, earthy vocals, trésero Coto and the Vizcaino family’s polyrhythmic percussion. Working with Orquesta Akokán’s Jacob Plasse, they tap into rumba’s and son’s African roots as well as Cuban religious music, evoking midcentury Cuban rumba with this slow-burning, heartfelt celebration. Highlights: the stirring call-and-response of “Chichiribako,” “Quiere La Rumba,” “Rumbarimbula,” “Devuelva Me La Voz.” okuterumba.com JAPANESE BREAKFAST, Jubilee (Dead Oceans): HHHH In the aftermath of her spacey, emotionally wounded 2017 album “Soft Sounds from Another Planet” and recent “Crying in H Mart” memoir about her mother’s death, Michelle Zauner embraces joy over darkness with this thoughtfully textured pop set. The reverbed ambiance of “Another Planet” has been replaced by bright vocals backed by banks of synthesizers and programmed drums. The 1980s-style beats suit “Be Sweet” (“I want to believe in you, I want to believe in something”) and the wary “Slide Tackle;” bleak humor coexists with sweetness and sorrow in the strongest tracks (“In Hell,” “Savage Good Boy,” “Tactics”), as in life. japanesebreakfast.rocks RACHEL BAIMAN, Cycles (Signature Sounds): HHH½ A smartly written, keenly felt set that should attract fans of Molly Tuttle and Gillian Welch. Playing guitar, banjo and fiddle, Baiman and co-producer Olivia Hally (bass, piano) focus on Baiman’s straightforward assessments of personal and communal rites of passage, relationships and self-discovery. The title track, the punchy “Hope It Hurts” and “Joke’s on Me” showcase her knack for pop hooks, while a cover of Slaid Cleaves and Rod Picott’s “Rustbelt Fields” complements Baiman’s topical songwriting. Inspired by Baiman’s grandmother, “No Good Time for Dying” unsentimentally speaks truth: “People that you love, well, they always disappoint you/ What you need is not to need at all/ There’s no way of asking them to turn and look away/ No way to hide their pity when they see you fall.” rachelbaiman.com SHUNGUDZO, “I’m not a mother but I have children” (Svikiro/ Young Forever/BMG): HHHH Hooks for days and substantive lyrics make this a terrific companion album for this summer. Born and raised in Zimbabwe, based in LA, Shungudzo Kuyimba began composing songs in the aftermath of George Floyd’s murder, speaking from her perspective on the edge of differing cultures. Racism and the frustrating dynamics of change burn at the heart of this gritty 16-track set: “People know my color before they know my name/ I try to be agreeable, I try to be a saint/ But sometimes an upright middle finger leads the way.” It’s a rejuvenating listen, alternating hard beats and righteous, infectious anthems (“There’s only so much a soul can take,” “It’s a good day [to fight the system]”) with vulnerable balladry (the title track, “To be me,” “How many more lives?”). Other highlights: guitar-slashing rocker “White parents,” the transcendent “The world can’t change for you, but you can change the world,” with a gorgeous choir affirming a mother’s hope. Turn it up. shungudzo.com
AMYTHYST KIAH, Wary + Strange (Rounder): HHH½ Best known as one-quarter of Grammy-nominated collective Our Native Daughters (alongside Rhiannon Giddens, Leyla McCalla and Allison Russell), Kiah melds rock with acoustic roots instrumentation on this vibrant solo set dealing with identity, addiction, belief and mortality. Recorded in LA with producer Tony Berg and nimble players (guitarist Blake Mills, keyboardist Ethan Gruska, bassist Wendy Melvoin), its 11 truth-telling tracks are musically gratifying and emotionally cathartic. Highlights include the proud rocker “Black Myself,” “Tender Organs” and the poignant “Wild Turkey,” about her mother’s death (“When I was seventeen, I pretended not to care/Stayed numb for years to escape despair”). amythystkiah.com WE ARE THE WEST, Only One Us (Timeless Elegance): HHH Guitarist Brett Hool and bassist John Kibler were in the middle of recording their second full-length album when the pandemic shutdown (and surgery for Hool’s broken leg) shoved the project into limbo. Having developed their cinematic, jam-friendly sound over eight years through their underground concert series in a Santa Monica garage, the final versions of these new songs take a simpler turn as gracefully fingerpicked acoustic guitars are subtly accompanied by organ, horn and percussion. Released in time for summer solstice, it’s a gently restorative set, imbued with a sense of renewal and gratitude for what’s most essential in life. Highlights: “For Giving,” “Unwind Your Mind,” “For All Mankind,” “When the Lights Have All Been Shined.” wearethewest.com ANGELIQUE KIDJO, Mother Nature (Universal): HHH The irrepressible, widely influential West African diva and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador rounds up a starry crew of veteran artists and up-and-comers to join her calls for love, “Dignity” and responsible stewardship of Planet Earth, including Yemi Alade, Salif Keita, Sampa the Great, Lionel Loueke, Shungudzo and Zeynab. Despite the heavy message, her tone is joyful, and longtime fans will likely savor the four-time Grammy winner’s empowering spirit during standout tracks such as “Do Yourself ” with Burna Boy, “Flying High” (“We have to live together/ … Life is so beautiful”), “Choose Love” (“Brothers, why we fighting each other/ My sisters, why we let the men take our power …/ Let’s be stronger than our fathers/ Free ourselves and please our mothers”). kidjo.com MNDSGN, Rare Pleasure (Stones Throw): HHH Ringgo Ancheta’s shows at the Lodge Room this weekend have already sold out, so fans will have to sate themselves with the trippy, samba-infused R&B comforts of the composer/arranger’s third album for Stones Throw. Collaborating again with bassist/ guitarist Swarvy, keyboardist Kiefer Shackelford, drummer Will Logan, percussionist Carlos Niño and string player Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Ancheta’s feel-good project’s graced with pillowy background vocals (Fousheé and Anna Wise) and moments of reassuring uplift. Highlights: “Hope You’re Doin’ Better” (“You know you’ve got a friend whenever you need one/ Pick up your phone”), “Slowdance,” “3Hands/Divine Hand I,” “Colours of the Sunset.” mndsgn.co
