SOUNDING THE ALARM
ALEX HERNANDEZ AND CHANTELLE HERSHBERGER GO ON TRIAL IN WHAT THEY VIEW AS A FIGHT AGAINST FASCISM Donald Trump, the candidate who called Mexican immigrants “rapists” on the campaign trail, is now the leader of a regime running concentration camps at the border. This past weekend, ICE agents were to conduct raids in nine cities, including Los Angeles, making good on Trump’s threat to detain and deport millions of immigrants. The vicious attack on immigrants is the spearhead of a larger fascist program by the Trump/Pence regime to radically remake society: civil liberties are stripped away and group after group is demonized on a road that leads to unspeakable horrors. Millions of people want this to stop. But stopping Trump and Pence will take more than wishing something would change, or voicing our outrage on social media. People will have to step outside of their comfort zones. They will have to put something on the line. Alex Hernandez and Chantelle Hershberger are two people who did just that. On two separate mornings in 2017, they stepped out onto the 101 Freeway, holding signs and blocking traffic to
inspire people to take to the streets in nonviolent protest against the Trump/Pence regime. Chantelle moved to Los Angeles from Ohio just before Trump’s election. It bothered her that after each outrage and protest, people just seemed to go home and normalize what the regime was doing. When asked about why she joined the freeway action, she said, “It’s one thing to talk about how wrong it is that a white supremacist is in the White House, and to even recognize the danger that ensues when you have the president backing these angry mobs of white supremacist militias. But it’s another thing when you understand that this is vital to consolidating fascism. You need to incite fear among the masses. So then I had to decide. What was I going to do about it?” Alex grew up in South Central Los Angeles and saw firsthand the widespread violence of the police against black and brown people. After Trump’s election, he saw the extreme danger of a fascist regime at the helm of the most powerful country and military in the world. He took part in the freeway action because of what
was going on in society at the time. “A year and a half ago, think of what the Trump/Pence regime was doing... threatening North Korea with nuclear war, banning Muslims, restricting trans people from the military. We did this to sound the alarm against fascism. Those were not normal times. And now, look at all the children in concentration camps, and lawyers for the Justice Department saying that migrant children don’t need toothbrushes, beds, anything sanitary... All these things have consequences. This is the logic that leads to genocide.” Last month, prosecutors lost their case against Alex and Chantelle when the trial ended in a hung jury. They tried to frame their case as a simple traffic violation, despite the fact that the charges were brought by the highly political Major Crimes/AntiTerrorist Division of the LAPD, a division with a sordid history of spying on activist groups. Alex and Chantelle spoke in court about why they risked their lives to block the freeway, and moved several jurors to refuse to convict. But immediately after a mistrial was announced, the

prosecution vowed to retry the case. By doing this, they join nationwide efforts to criminalize protest in the wake of Trump’s election and become enforcers of the fascist suppression of dissent. Through aggressive policing and prosecution, and anti-protest bills either passed or proposed in 35 states, a fundamental right is under serious threat. We should never forget Trump’s statement from the campaign trail that he longed for the days when protesters were carried out on stretchers. These courageous activists stood up against a fascist regime before many people recognized that it was fascism. Videos of the freeway actions went viral, showing millions of people the kind of resistance that was needed. Supporting Alex and Chantelle and the rest of the freeway protesters, calling the City Attorney Mike Feuer’s office and signing this petition to demand that they drop the charges, and filling the courtroom when their trial starts on July 25, goes a long way in refusing to accept a fascist America. Many supporters of Alex and Chantelle have chosen to stand on the right side of history. We invite you to join us. ■ Coco Das is a member of the editorial collective of refusefascism.org. THE RACE TO SPACE
THE APOLLO 11 MOON LANDING WAS A VICTORY FOR DEMOCRATIC SOCIALISM This is the week that we celebrate the first human landing on the moon. Credit will be taken by many different interests for their role in this great human achievement. Curiously, the Apollo moon landing of a half-century ago has great relevance to today’s hotly contested Democratic primary race. NASA’s landing on the moon was a demonstration of successful application of Democratic Socialism — a much discussed matter in Democratic circles these days. Curiously, this democratic socialist concept of NASA had its origins under Republican President Dwight Eisenhower. The 1950s were a period of vast global expansion by the United States — the only World War II power left unscathed by the fighting. After the war we captured the majority of the Nazi rocket scientists, including Wernher von Braun who oversaw the development and manufacture of the infamous V-2 rockets at Peenemunde, the secret Nazi rocket-testing site. There von Braun supervised concentration camp prisoners who produced the rockets that flew across the English Channel to attack our British allies. Von Braun’s team of German rocket scientists were brought to the US and re-established at a secret Army base near Huntsville, Alabama. Concurrently, the Soviet Union, our World War II ally, developed its own atomic and thermonuclear weapons. The arms race was on. Military thinking at the time held that new delivery systems had to be developed to deliver nuclear weapons. World War II’s Army Air Corps, re-constituted as the US Air Force, first developed the B-36, then the B-47, and finally the B-52 intercontinental bombers as nuclear weapon delivery systems. The ultimate goal was to deliver the weapons by ballistic missiles from North America to potential adversaries in Europe and Asia, in particular the Soviet Union and the Peoples Republic of China. The task of developing effective intercontinental ballistic missile delivery systems was pursued competitively between the US Air Force with its Navaho rocket, the Navy with its Vanguard, and the Army with its Redstone missile system. Each agency attempted to launch an Earth-orbiting satellite — a clear indication of ballistic launch capability. Each military branch failed repeatedly. The competitive approach failed. In 1956, the Soviet Union successfully launched Sputnik — the first Earthorbiting spacecraft. A short week later they successfully launched Sputnik II, which carried Laika, a dog, thereby demonstrating the successful creation of habitability in space. President Eisenhower recognized that the three competing military branches had failed in launching an Earth-orbiting spacecraft. He then led the development of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). A democratically elected Congress passed the legislation. The taxpayers made a social investment of capital to carry out a national objective, making NASA a Democratic Socialist success. After NASA’s establishment, the Soviet Union continued to have leadership in the space race but NASA was slowly gaining. The Cuban missile crisis of 1962 brought the world close to nuclear disaster. Earth teetered on the brink of nuclear war. In the end, the USSR agreed to withdraw its short-range missiles from Cuba. Shortly thereafter, US missiles threatening the Soviet Union were withdrawn from our NATO ally Turkey. The nuclear superpowers had stepped back from the brink, but the danger of nuclear brinkmanship remained. To reorient the dangerous competition for nuclear weapon superiority, President Kennedy proposed a national goal of landing humans on the moon. Although the Soviet Union never formally accepted the competition, it carried out a competitive lunar effort. Kennedy entrusted the Apollo program to NASA, the same democratic socialist enterprise that had orbited Explorer I, America’s first Earth-orbiting spacecraft, which was developed at Pasadena’s NASA facility, Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Fifty years ago this week we celebrate the Apollo 11 spacecraft landing on the moon and returning to Earth. Let’s also remember this week that Wall Street did not put humans on the moon. That was accomplished by a democratic socialist endeavor called NASA, which was established under a Republican president. ■ Robert M. Nelson is an astrophysicist at the Planetary Science Institute. Since 2012, Chu has been representing Pasadena and the West San Gabriel Valley that with redistricting that year became the 27th District. Currently, the 66-year-old lawmaker serves on the powerful House Ways and Means Committee, which has filed a lawsuit to obtain President Trump’s long-sought tax documents. The Ways and Means Committee also has jurisdiction over legislation pertaining to Social Security and Medicare. On that committee, Chu is a member of its subcommittees on Health and Human Resources, Worker and Family Support, and Oversight, giving her responsibility for issues related to health care reform and safety net programs. In April, Chu and Republican Congressman Devin Nunes (R-Fresno) teamed up on a rare piece of bipartisan legislation: the Sunshine for Samples Act. This bill would amend the Sunshine Act to require drug manufacturers to publicly make available the number and value of free drug samples given to health care providers and charities annually. Chu also serves on the House Small Business Committee, which has oversight of the Small Business Administration, and is the chair of the Subcommittee on Investigations, Oversight and Regulations. She has also worked to bring two full-service small business development centers to the San Gabriel Valley — one located at
Pasadena City Councilman John Kennedy, in what he is calling an effort to bring “prepared, competent, relevant and sane leadership to the White House,” will welcome Democratic presidential frontrunner Joe Biden to his home Joe Biden on Friday, July 19, for a lunchtime fundraiser. “I have known Joe Biden for over 30 years,” said Kennedy, who represents Pasadena’s District 3. “So it is with an abundance of history and respect … as well as personal affection that I am hosting Vice President Biden at an intimate lunch gathering.” Biden is currently the frontrunner in the crowded field of Democratic candidates. His poll numbers have taken a hit in the weeks since fellow candidate and California Sen. Kamala Harris criticized his opposition to 1970s-era school busing policies as a US senator and his comments on working with segregationist senate colleagues, for which he subsequently apologized. Those expected to attend the event at Kennedy’s home include his sister Lena L. Kennedy and District 6 City Councilman Steve Madison. On June 29, Harris spoke at a private fundraiser at the West Pasadena home of Tamerlin Godley, who is running for Madison’s District 6 council seat. Biden’s visit to Pasadena follows those of several other Democratic presidential candidates in recent weeks. On May 30, New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand spoke at the Women’s City Club of Pasadena. On May 31, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders held a political rally at the Pasadena Convention Center and he, Harris, former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julián Castro and Washington Gov. Jay Inslee participated in the first presidential forum focused on immigration at the Pasadena Hilton. Fellow presidential candidate Mayor Pete Buttigieg of South Bend, Indiana is also reportedly finalizing plans to stump in Pasadena. Candidates are making sure to show up in California because the state has moved its primary election date up from June to March 3, also known as Super Tuesday. The earlier date — after only Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina — will ensure that California voters and the state’s nearly 500 delegates play a decisive role in determining the eventual nominee.

PASADENA CONGRESSWOMAN JUDY CHU ON BIG PHARMA, WAR, THE CENSUS, HOLDING KIDS IN CAGES AND PRESIDENT TRUMP BY ANDRÉ COLEMAN
U
S Rep. Judy Chu (D-Pasadena) has been a San Gabriel Valley political leader since the mid-1980s. In 1985, Chu was elected to the Garvey School District Board of Education. From there, she won a seat on the Monterey Park City Council, where she served as mayor three times. By the turn of the century, Chu entered state politics, winning a seat in the state Assembly in 2001. After terming out of that office, with her husband Mike Eng, who had taken over his wife’s seat on the Monterey Park City Council and then won her Assembly seat, Chu was elected to the State Board of Equalization in 2006. In 2009, the former junior college psychology professor became the first Chinese-American woman elected to Congress when she won the special election that year for the then-32nd Congressional District after then-Congresswoman and now-LA County Supervisor Hilda Solis was appointed Secretary of Labor by President Barack Obama. In a packed field, Chu finished first with 32 percent of the vote, easily defeating Republican rival Betty Chu in the runoff election, capturing 62 percent of the vote in that race. Since then, Chu has won re-election five times with at least 60 percent of the vote in four of those contests. Three of those victories have come against perennial Republican candidate Jack Orswell.

POLICE ARREST FIVE IN CONNECTION WITH ALLEGED SCHEME TO STEAL ELDERLY CANCER PATIENT’S MONEY AFTER GETTING HIM DRUNK BY ANDRÉ COLEMAN
Victor Cass
Pasadena police have arrested five people on suspicion of stealing $24,000 from a recovering alcoholic and cancer patient after allegedly getting him intoxicated. Carolyn Shields, 61, was arrested on July 10 at her East Holly Street apartment in Pasadena after police officers serving a search warrant found evidence allegedly linking her to fraudulent online purchases made with the victim’s credit card. Shields was being held on $50,000 bail, according to police spokesman Lt. Jason Clawson. Arrested June 26 on suspicion of elder financial abuse and grand theft were Billy Burton, 63, Griselda “Gracie” Patterson, 48, and her daughter Adriana Patterson, 22, all of Los Angeles. Antwan Havard, 25 and also of Los Angeles, was also arrested on suspicion of elder financial abuse and grand theft. The group allegedly stole more than $24,000 from a 73-year-old victim over a more than three-month period. The victim’s name was being withheld by police. Authorities say the group also unsuccessfully attempted to bilk the unidentified man out of an additional $54,000. “The Pasadena Police Department takes seriously any and all allegations of elder financial abuse,” said Detective Victor Cass in a prepared statement. Cass led the investigation and the arrest of the five suspects. “These kinds of crimes target our community’s most trusting and vulnerable senior population,” Cass said. Burton and the elder Patterson remain in custody in Los Angeles County Jail on $70,000 and $50,000 bail, respectively. Adriana Patterson and Havard have posted bail. Those four individuals are due in Pasadena Superior Court on Aug. 8. A court date for Shields was not immediately available. Police say Burton, Havard and the Pattersons would consume alcohol with the victim until he was intoxicated. The suspects would then walk him into his banks and convince tellers to remove large amounts of cash or issue cashier’s checks on his behalf. They then allegedly used the victim’s credit card to make online purchases and rent motel rooms. The suspects were arrested after Cass received a call from the Pasadena Federal Credit Union, where the transactions occurred. After reviewing surveillance video, online purchase receipts, bank records and interviewing witnesses, Cass notified the credit union to contact him when the suspects returned. According to police, all but Shields have confessed. n

CITY ANNOUNCES MODIFICATIONS TO TENANT PROTECTION ORDINANCE BY ANDRÉ COLEMAN
Modifications to the city’s tenant protection ordinance (TPO), designed to provide greater protections for local William Huang renters facing eviction, went into effect late last week, according to a statement issued by city officials. The ordinance, which was adopted in 2004 and amended in 2017, requires landlords to provide relocation benefits to qualified tenants facing eviction. “This is important to those Pasadena renters who are feeling vulnerable to eviction,” said city Housing Director William Huang. “It doesn’t necessarily keep folks in their apartments, but it provides those who are eligible a reasonable relocation payment.” Under the modifications, the ordinance now covers tenants if they are evicted 18 months after the property changes owners. Pasadena rents are among the highest in the state, with some one-bedroom apartments renting at nearly $3,000 a month. State laws allow landlords to raise rents as much as they want. In some situations, landlords have raised the rent by hundreds of dollars. Local housing advocates, including the Pasadena Tenant Justice Coalition, have been pushing for rent control, but so far the City Council has had no public discussions on the issue. The ordinance also requires landlords to pay relocation benefits to displaced tenants if the building is demolished, converted to condominiums, or permanently removed from the rental market. Tenants evicted so landlords or their family members can take occupancy of the unit are also eligible for relocation fees, as are tenants forced to move under orders by the government to vacate and tenants evicted from housing owned by educational institutions under certain situations. Multifamily rental properties with two or more units on a single parcel are subject to the ordinance. Single-family homes and condominium units are exempt. To be eligible for relocation benefits, tenants must be in good standing, with incomes not exceeding 140 percent of the Los Angeles County area median income. n 8 PASADENA WEEKLY | 07.18.19
Pasadena City College and the other at the University of Laverne. She reintroduced House Resolution 448, the Women’s Health Protection Act, which would protect a woman’s right to safe and legal abortion. Most recently she inspected conditions at migrant camps located in Texas along the border with Mexico. “We saw children locked up behind steel doors,” Chu said. “There was a toddler that looked miserable. When we waved to him he pressed his face against the door, hoping to get out. It broke my heart.” Pasadena Weekly recently caught up with Chu, who spoke about conditions in those camps, and other issues facing the nation. PW: You just visited the migrant detention centers in Texas. What did you see there? Chu: I was appalled and disgusted. It was a congressional delegation. We went to El Paso and we talked to a group of women in cinder block cells who immediately had tears streaming down their faces. They were miserable and had no idea when they were getting out. They have been separated from their children. One woman had epilepsy. There is no running water, and some of them had been asking for medication. There is no running water, and they were told to drink out of the toilet bowl. Then we went to the Clint Border Patrol Station, where they house the unaccompanied minors. There were 106 kids there. At one point 700 kids were there. There is also a warehouse where there were 100 to 200 kids at one time. Imagine a giant steel garden shed that has no air conditioning, in an area where it’s is over 100 degrees. We could only be in there for a short period of time. What can be done about this? A judge dictates what should go on in this facility. He has ordered they come up with a solution. I am pressing on with demands for change. I did not vote for the bill that passed. I have great concerns about accountability. The second version did not have standard of care that was in the first version; it didn’t include anything about hygiene and nutrition, It should have a provision that money should only go to the intended target and a 90-day limit for the minors to remain in these places. Congressmen should be able to go in unannounced, so the centers cannot be sterilized. They tried to do that with us. Where do you stand on impeachment? I believe the president committed impeachable actions. I want to make sure the American public is with us on this. If we start the process, then all of America will be focused on it. What America needs to know is the ultimate goal cannot be accomplished with Republicans in charge. Unless there was enough pressure on Republicans we could have a frustrated public and a president who claims he has triumphed. I think Mueller’s testimony will be very, very important. For the people to hear from him, even if it’s just his account of what’s in the report, that is very, very valuable. What are your thoughts on the first two debates? The debates were fascinating. I would say in the first
debates Elizabeth Warren and Julian Castro stood out, and in the second one Kamala Harris and Pete Buttigieg stood out. Is the country ready for a woman president? Why not? I think we have many excellent qualified candidates. How much damage would a citizenship question on the census do? (Editor’s note: The president dropped his effort to get the question on the census and has now ordered all federal agencies to compile information on illegal immigrants living in the country.) I think they have already done damage because they have put this issue out there. Some people may think this question is on the census, even if it’s not, and avoid the census. Pasadena is in serious danger of an under count. We have to make sure there is a complete count. That is very important. How important is the health care issue? This is the number one issue for Americans. We have worked overtime to make our health care system affordable and to make sure it is for everybody. We should move closer to a universal system. I have cosponsored Medicare for all. I’m for a public option that could compete with private plans. People would flock to it. I am a huge proponent of lowering prescription drug prices. A month’s supply of insulin in my district costs $665. Yet, in Australia, it’s $28. Why is it if you cross the border it is one-tenth of the cost? Countless constituents are considering going to Canada and Mexico for medicine. It’s outrageous that Americans are in this position. I co-authored a Ways and Means bill, Sunshine for Samples, to address this issue and to put transparency on the costs of drug samples. Companies spend more on drug samples and commercials than they do on research and development. Samples of oxycontin may have led to the opioid crisis. Are we headed for another war in the Middle East? I am very worried and concerned the president will drag us into another war. He got us out of the nuclear deal and now Iran is building up its arsenal. It’s a very troubling situation. I am opposed to him using the 2001 authorization (for use of military force) as his excuse to go to war. Every president has to have approval by Congress. He has to have a new authorization by Congress. Is there anything you want to say to your Pasadena constituents? I have been fighting to get a veterans health care clinic in the San Gabriel Valley for seven years. Finally we got one opened on May 20, in Arcadia. Previously vets had to take long trips to Los Angeles, West Los Angeles or Loma Linda to get medical care. It is a full service facility and a bigger one is going to open in three to five years. We are going to have the grand opening on Aug. 2. If anyone wants details on the facility, they can call my office. n

CAREER ILL ILLUSTRATOR LUSTRATOR TONY GLEESON SPOTLIGHTS HIS OTHER LOVE — WRITING CRIME NOVELS — SUNDAY AT BATTERY BOOKS & MUSIC BY CARL KOZLOWSKI
T
ony Gleeson has built a nearly 50-year career in illustration and graphic design for major book publishers, including Doubleday’s science fiction division, and countless publications, such as the Los Angeles Times. He’s also created numerous cover images for the Pasadena Weekly. Yet, he’s also managed the incredible feat of maintaining another thriving career as the author of a murder mystery series centered on the procedural investigations of a group of police in the Personal Crimes Unit of a fictional West Coast metropolis. While his seven novels have fi rst been published in England as part of the Linford Mystery Library series, he’s had three of the books republished in the US by Wildside Press. The latest, combining two novels following the adventures of Detective Frank Vandegraf called “It’s Her Fault” and “The Other Frank,” will be the focus of a discussion and signing event Sunday at The Battery Books & Music store in Pasadena. “I’ve been doing a lot of writing for many years, mainly nonfiction, but I had several different kinds of fiction pieces I put together and this happens to be what someone was interested in a few years ago,” explains Gleeson. “The fi rst murder mystery I’d written, ‘Night Music,’ started with the idea of what would you do if you had eight people die in one night and how would you connect it. “This publisher in the UK was particularly interested in that, so I started writing more of them and they’ve bought nine,” he continues. “It was the luck of the draw. Somebody suggested I try this particular agent in England and he was the guy who liked it. That fi rst book was published at the end of 2015. I haven’t been over there, but I’m doing the best I can to promote the American editions here. It’s a good gig, because I like the

stories I’m coming up with and the characters and world I’ve created.” Gleeson’s novels center on five detectives in the PCU division, rotating each as the lead characters in the books. Gleeson notes that the different personalities of each character give each book a different flavor, as Frank Vandegraf is stoic but has a sense of humor that gives his adventures a lighter quality. Other characters are “very serious and dedicated and their books are darker and more serious.” “It’s Her Fault” fi nds Vandegraf investigating the death of an eccentric university professor who had claimed his wife was trying to kill him, even as she went into hiding after claiming he threatened to kill her. When the detective finds a mysterious note lying on his chest that says “It’s her fault,” he doubles down on his efforts to locate the missing wife, his prime suspect — but when he does, the case takes a bizarre turn. In “The Other Frank,” Vandegraf hears of the unexpected death of his exwife and travels to the tiny rural town of Easton to face the demons of his past. But it’s no respite from the challenging urban crimes of his regular job, and no sooner has he arrived than two bizarre, violent deaths occur, leading him to feel irresistibly drawn to help unravel a web of mystery and intrigue. However, he’s out of his jurisdiction, obstructed by officials, and amidst folk hiding their own secrets. “I’m defi nitely influenced by Evan Hunter, who was a very prolific writer who wrote 55 procedural mysteries under the name Ed McBain and was an incredible storyteller in a book series called ‘The 87th Precinct’,” says Gleeson. “He had a lot of humanity in his books and defi nitely influenced how I approach these procedurals. “I also love Donald Westlake, who influenced the more amusing parts of my stories, when I want to be funny or have a whole lot of stuff going on in them,” he adds. “I think of Westlake things, which are really funny or really dark, but could make your laugh your ass off. I’m not concerned with being really trendy or getting dark and noir just to do it. There’s enough dark stuff in police work without pushing it.” A native of upstate New York, Gleeson recalls “confounding my parents and teachers that I didn’t want to be a doctor or lawyer, and they thought I was crazy.” Although they suggested he write and draw as a hobby, he stuck to his guns and wound up studying at the ArtCenter College of Design. He moved back to New York City after graduating, launching a career as a graphic designer and meeting his wife before convincing her to flee the Big Apple’s harsh winters in favor of the California sun. He’s created an eclectic body of work ever since. “I’ve been a staff artist at other studios, and run my own — done design, concept work and all sorts of stuff,” he says. “I worked in fi lms, TV, done toys, worked on theme parks and designed movie posters. I’ve done catalog drawings until I wanted to scream. There are only so many chairs you can draw for a newspaper. Anything I can do I did it, and here I am today still doing it.” Sunday’s event will team Gleeson with his friend and fellow author Odie Hawkins, the self-described “father of the Pan-African occult genre” who has written 37 novels of his own. The two recently teamed up at a Redondo Beach bookstore appearance to discuss Gleeson’s novels, and he hopes that they will be able to do many more events together. “I’m really excited by where it’s going,” says Gleeson. “I’d love to get them in the hands of a lot of people and see if they agree with me. I’m just a storyteller and I like bringing these regular characters to life. They’ve become people. “When you really invest the time in creating characters and situations, they take on a life of their own,” he adds. “I love this side of what I’m doing. I get approached like a different person doing this and that’s really cool to me. Nobody asks me to do the covers on my books and I’m delighted to see what somebody else does with them. I just really enjoy it.” ■ Tony Gleeson will discuss his novels “It’s Her Fault” and “The Other Frank” with Odie Hawkins and sign the books at 7 p.m. Sunday at The Battery Books & Music, 26 S. Los Robles Ave., Pasadena. Admission is free. Call (626) 376-9913 or visit thebatterybooksmusic.business.site.

SOME PASADENA FAVORITES OFFER DISCOUNTED MENUS DURING RESTAURANT WEEK BY MICHAEL SPRAGUE
S
outhern California foodies have until July 26 to experience some of the LA area’s most in-demand spots. Thanks to specially priced dineLA Restaurant Week menus, and the online reservation platform Open Table, some top-tier, four-star restaurants open their doors and books giving Angelenos a more accessible route to the culinary world. While Pasadena already has a host of affordable dining spots (looking at you Maquina Taco, 1274 N. Lake Ave., No. 1, Pasadena; (626) 365-1893; maquinataco.com; no alcohol/ major cards accepted)), a number of local restaurants with more dollar icons next to their Yelp listings become an option during this celebration of culinary culture. Here are some of the Pasadena favorites you should check out before the deals disappear and you are stuck counting down the days until the winter dineLA event. Alexander’s Steakhouse It is hard for me to not bring up Alexander’s. They have a spot on my best happy hour list for much the same reason as they are getting a shout out here. Pasadena is fortunate enough to have one of the three Alexander’s locations. For context on just what a culinary heavyweight the Japanese influenced steakhouse is, its Silicon Valley counterpart has a Michelin star. The Pasadena location opened in 2015 after the committee that awards Michelin
stars stopped awarding them to Los Angeles-based restaurants. With that context in mind, Alexander’s Restaurant Week menu does come at the highest cost of any on my list at $119, but for a six-course meal that features a beef tataki appetizer, along with a sweet braised pork belly doused in a pork aioli, garlic soy, and pickled daikon. Following the appetizers come the organic greens served with crab, lobster jelly, avocado and honey yuzu vinaigrette dressing. The next two courses are the shrimp chawanmushi and six-ounce New York strip of American Wagyu beef served in a bordelaise reduction with an herb salad accompaniment. The six courses are rounded out by a pistachio cake dessert served with matcha ice cream and a vegetable pistachio crumble. I know Alexander’s Restaurant Week offering hits the wallet harder than some of the other choices, but it is an opening to the upper echelon of the culinary world. Treat yourself to a lengthy, multicourse journey through some truly masterful flavors. Alexander’s Steakhouse, 111 N. Los Robles Ave., Pasadena; (626) 486-1111; alexanderssteakhouse.com; alcohol served/major cards accepted. then in its infancy, understandably working the finer details of the menu. Gold praised the citrus brined chicken wings, calling them “heartier, stickier than the traditional double-cooked Indonesian bird.” Perhaps in a show of respect to Gold who was the arbiter of Los Angeles dining, the wings found their way to Bone Kettle’s lunch menu. For $20 Bone Kettle is offering a two-course lunch. The first course is a choice of the Gold-approved chicken wings or the spicy papaya salad made with bay scallops, finely shredded green papaya, mangoes, tomatoes, chili, cilantro, green beans and rounded out for texture with peanuts. For an entree they are offering diners a chance to experience their titular bone infusions with either the top sirloin or the ginger seared chicken, both accompanied by bone broth and noodles. They also have a vegan entree option — the crispy tempeh served with its own vegan broth and noodles. Bone Kettle, 67 N. Raymond Ave., Pasadena; (626) 795-5702; bonekettle.com; alcohol served/major cards accepted. Beer & Claw Beer & Claw has earned my respect. Tucked away in Mills Alley, just off Green Street, the crustacean & cocktail-centric restaurant offers the shelled seafood options that we love to crack open, harkening back to our hunter gatherer roots. But unlike some similarly centric restaurants, they do it sans the plastic bibs and tablecloths like some of their counterparts. For Restaurant Week they are putting it all out there. Their pre-fixe three-course dinner and cocktail menu will run $59, and is packed full of seafood as well as non-oceanic options. For appetizers there’s a five oyster platter, loaded pork belly fries, a watermelon ahi salad, crab wontons, and a few more to choose from. For entrees you can select one of six options that include a ribeye and a cajun seafood platter. The standout of the entrees is the LobstaMozz, a decadent cheesy
lobster shell covered in mozzarella and spices. Videos and pictures of the Lobstamozz have gone viral across food blogs this week, and for good reason; it must be seen to be believed. Their dinner menu wraps up with one of four dessert options: the honey bourbon strawberry shortcake is a summer dream with fresh whipped cream and honey bourbon drizzle. It is the refreshing ending that you deserve after burning calories cracking into those lobster shells. Beer & Claw, 61 S. Fair Oaks Ave., No. 130, Pasadena; (626) 460-8511; beerandclaw.com; alcohol served/major cards accepted. Parkway Grill The Pasadena pillar offers a two course lunch menu and a three-course dinner menu. Featuring ingredients from its own organic garden, Parkway Grill creates really special dishes with a fresh, seasonal twist. They’ve been doing things right for over 35 years and if you haven’t had a chance to visit yet, take this one. The lunch menu entrees feature choices of some classics: pan fried chicken, a shrimp and vegetable pasta dish, and an open faced ribeye sandwich with onion rings. Dinner selections include a whitefish beurre blanc, filet mignonette, and a half-chicken with lemon sauce. Each dish is enhanced by the freshest local fare, straight from the on-premises garden and plated in the exhibition kitchen, which has one of the first mesquite and oak wood burning ovens in LA. Every detail of Parkway Grill is special and I have no doubt your visit will be as well. Pro tip: Don’t miss the bar. It’s original, transported from Chicago when Parkway opened. Among various features and accolades for the vast collection of wines and spirits, the bartenders have over 92 collective years of Parkway Grill service. Parkway Grill, 510 S. ANXIETY OCCURS WHEN SOMEONE HAS A STRONG NEED TO PERFORM BUT FEARS FAILURE
By Carl Kozlowski
Dear Patti, I’m 18 and have to take the DMV road test in order to get my driver’s license. I passed the written exam but when I took the actual driving test last month I failed. It only took 25 minutes but it seemed like forever. I thought I was fully prepared. I’ve taken a driver’s prep course of over 50 hours with 10 hours of night driving. As my family will attest, I’m a very good driver. I was just so nervous at the possibility of not getting my driver’s license that I didn’t pass, and as the appointment time for the re-test gets closer, I’m getting more and more apprehensive. I’m very independent and hate the idea of not being able to get around on my own. If I’m calm and focused and still unsuccessful, then maybe I need to practice more and take the test again, but if I fail because of my nerves I’m afraid it’s because of a destructive pattern. Do you have any suggestions on how to keep my composure? — Hannah Dear Hannah, You’re not alone in your angst about test-taking. Whether it’s a job interview, a school exam or an athletic competition, anxiety can occur when someone has a driving need to perform but becomes so afraid of failure that all their knowledge, experience and confidence flies out the window. Concentration can also be impacted by extreme stress, or following a traumatic event. Let’s say, for example, you and I visited a hospital emergency room and encountered a woman who’d just been in an accident. Imagine asking her to study trigonometry on the spot; while remembering her phone number and address might be challenging enough. When your anxiety level is so high that cognitive disruption (unclear thinking) occurs, it’s important to understand the causes. Let’s start with thinking of your body as a radio with three channels. One is a channel to all your thoughts, another channel is to your physical and emotional feelings in your body, and the third is all of your senses (smell, taste, sight, touch and hearing) that connect you to the outside world. Since it’s difficult to listen to three radio stations simultaneously, it’s important to focus on what each separate channel is communicating. First, let’s concentrate on your thoughts. Explore your worst fears; i.e., you don’t want to lose your independence. Face these thoughts, explore possible alternatives, and then turn that channel off. Don’t allow yourself to ruminate, especially during the test. Every time these frightening thoughts return, dismiss them by saying “I don’t need to scare myself.” Concentrate on how to demonstrate your driving skills and knowledge of traffic laws and stay focused in present time. I’d recommend driving to the DMV road test site a few days before the exam. Sit in your car in the parking lot and focus on the second channel, your physical and emotional feelings. Imagine yourself getting in line to take the test. Do you have physical anxiety symptoms such as knots or butterflies in your stomach, racing heartbeat, shallow breathing or tense muscles? Are you experiencing feelings such as sadness or anger? If so, pay attention to these feelings and focus on your symptoms until they go away. Lie back, stretch out, close your eyes and breathe in and out, deeply and slowly. Count backwards from 10 to one, feeling the tension gently leave your body with each breath as you relax your feet and legs, your torso, your arms and hands and, lastly, your neck and head. When you’re completely relaxed, open your eyes and, again, imagine yourself taking the test. Repeat this relaxation exercise each time the anxiety returns until you’ve desensitized your fears and can easily visualize yourself confidently taking the test. Even under stress, you’ll be able to recall the knowledge and skills you know you have. Get a good night’s sleep the night before the exam. Don’t go on an empty stomach. Eat a light but healthy meal beforehand. Arrive early with your thoughts free of fear and worry, your body calm and relaxed. Stay focused on the third channel — giving full attention to your senses; stay in the present, and focus on the task at hand. How exciting for you to be taking this positive step toward independence and adulthood. Good luck n Patti Carmalt-Vener, a faculty member with the Southern California Society for Intensive Short Term Psychotherapy, has been a psychotherapist in private practice for 23 years and has an office in Pasadena. LOST NO MORE House passes Schiff amendment to add names of ‘The Lost 74’ to Vietnam Veterans Memorial
Seventy-four sailors who lost their lives on the USS Frank E. Evans during the Vietnam War will have their names added to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC. “The Lost 74 died aboard the USS Frank E. Evans during the Vietnam War, and today the House took an important step to ensure their sacrifice is not forgotten,” said Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Burbank). Schiff announced on Friday that by a 220-197 vote the House of Representatives passed an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) instructing the Department of Defense to add the names of the memorial. On June 3, 1969 the American destroyer was struck by the HMAS Melbourne, an Australian aircraft carrier in the South China Sea, during a joint Southeast Asia Treaty Organization exercise called “Sea Spirit” at the time of the collision. Despite operating in Vietnamese waters immediately before deployment to the joint exercise, and a scheduled return to activities supporting the war effort after the exercise, it was determined that since the incident occurred outside the geographical limit for the combat zone the sailors who lost their lives were ineligible for inclusion on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. That conclusion did not acknowledge that at the time of the incident, the crew of the USS Evans was instrumental in advancing American military objectives in Vietnam and had participated in conflict just days before the collision.

THE CLEAN COMEDY CHALLENGE GIVES FRESH TALENTS THE CHANCE TO BE CLEAN AND CLEVER FOR CASH BY CARL KOZLOWSKI

L
eslie Norris Townsend had been a longtime veteran standup comic when she decided to try out some new jokes at an open mic near her Ohio home a decade ago. Nearly every comic around her that night was performing dirty material, a fact that surprised her, considering the fact she knew that clean comedy was infinitely more valuable to a comedy career. . But that dispiriting evening inspired her to take a stand against the tide of onstage filth. She soon created the Clean Comedy Challenge (CCC), a twice-annual, three-day series of shows and seminars in which more than twodozen comics compete each night to take home a top prize of $1,000, while also engaging in seminars with veteran comics and writers during the day. The result has been a big success, with the CCC bringing clean, clever comedy to numerous cities nationwide. Its third go-round at the Ice House in Pasadena takes place Tuesday through next Thursday, with national headliner Bob Zany and former “Tonight Show” head writer Jimmy Brogan amid the judges and lecturers. “We ask people all over the country who have a desire to do standup to apply, whether it’s a club comic who wants to learn how to work clean, Christian comics wanting to learn how to be user-friendly in secular environments and work cruise ships and clubs ,” says Townsend, who notes that the Ice House was the first club ever to hire her officially as a comedian. “Clean comedy is the way to go to make a living. tions want squeaky clean acts and for them to be politically correct also.” The CCC mainly attracts participants through announcements each January or February on its website, cleancomedychallenge.com. There are no auditions involved, and the first 25 people to apply and pay the fee ($400 for full participation in seminars and performing) are accepted. Participants perform three-minute sets each night, in shows that are judged by veteran comics, including Brogan and Zany, among others. The final night, on July 25, climaxes with the judges’ choice of winner for each of the three nights facing off alongside the audience-voted favorite. The daytime seminars include a jokewriting session led by legendary comedy writer Gene Perret, who spent decades as Bob Hope’s head writer before launching his own successful line of comedyteaching books. Other seminars cover career promotion and how to get booked in various formats of shows, in addition to the comics receiving in-depth critiques by the guest judges. Each evening features all 25 comics performing a different threeminute set in front of a different panel of judges. “This allows everybody who has the desire to do comedy a shot at either realizing a dream, continuing a dream or possibly beginning the moment of a dream,” says Townsend. “It’s very exciting because everybody looks at comedy and thinks, ‘I can do that.’ It puts some meat on the bones because it’s not easy and this gives them three nights in a row to do stage time. “Each night ballots are tallied and three rise to the top, and there’s a cumulative score because each night we have different judges and so you have different eyes looking at the jokes,” she continues. “The ultimate goal is to pick someone who has
originality, joke writing skills, stage presence and the overall star quality which is hard to define.” As the head writer for Jay Leno’s “The Tonight Show” from 1992 to 2000, Jimmy Brogan experienced the importance of clean yet funny comedy firsthand on a nightly basis. He has been a regular presence at the three Ice House editions of the CCC, serving as both a judge and seminar lecturer in addition to providing one on one critiques with the performers. “In past years, I sat down with Jan Smith the former comedy booker there, and went through everyone’s act and gave them feedback,” explains Brogan. “Some performers are new to comedy and some have been around and are looking to make it bigger. I saw one woman named Angie Stokes from Anchorage who came back to do it again, and she was phenomenal in year two after just trying it out the year before. “I always tell the comics that dirty comedy turns out not to be the choice that makes you feel good and that clean comedy is the choice that in the long run will make you more money because you can work any kind of event or TV show,” he adds. “It opens more doors than dirty. “ “A lot of times this attracts a person who has it on their bucket list to do a pro comedy club, and being around better comics, you learn,” adds Townsend. “The challenge is when you add a contest element to it, it steps it up another notch. People bring their A -game, edit their jokes, and do a three-minute set.” n The Clean Comedy Challenge takes place at 8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, and 7:30 p.m. next Thursday, July 25, at the Ice House, 24 N. Mentor Ave., Pasadena. Tickets are $10 per show. Visit icehousecomedy.com.

‘UNHEARD LA’ PRESENTS ‘LETTERS TO OUR CITY’ AT THE CRAWFORD FAMILY FORUM WEDNESDAY NIGHT
hen the producers of KPCC’s “Unheard LA” recently invited Monterey Park resident Mike Sonksen to host an event in their space, he had no shortage of fellow artists and storytellers to call to join a celebration of LA’s diverse communities and pockets of wonder. He says he and the show’s team were “already on the same wavelength” so things gelled quickly for the show, which takes place at the Crawford Family Forum Wednesday night. The “good friends and great wordsmiths” who will join Sonksen onstage include two of his former high school students, literary siblings Dante and Monique Mitchell, as well as fellow poet/tour guide Armond Kinard, L.A. Taco editor Daniel Hernandez, NAACP Image Award-nominated novelist and lawyer Natashia Deón, author/actor/activist traci kato-kiriyama, Monrovia poet Luivette Resto, “StoryPhile” host Lee Boek, freelance writer Esther Tseng, and Highland Park poets Sara Borjas and Rocío Carlos. Terry Robinson, aka hip-hopper Hymnal, will perform his surrealist poetry, and Sonksen also invited El Monte-based saxophonist Adrian Ramon, a longtime collaborator 16 PASADENA WEEKLY | 07.18.19
with whom he plans to perform a piece. They named the event “Letters to Our City,” he says, “because the city is ours.” It also links thematically to “Letters to My City,” a book of poems and essays that Sonksen, a third-generation Angeleno, published earlier this year. It’s an open-hearted love song to his native city, with poems like “Garvey Avenue From Alhambra to El Monte,” “Ode to the Los Angeles River,” “Arrival Stories,” and “Los Angeles: The Land of 1000 Dances” that delight in the history and surprises found in neighborhoods, streets, and individual citizens across LA. Homage is paid to literary inspirations like Chester Himes and Luis J. Rodriguez, and “LA Authors,” one of Sonksen’s signature poems, reappears in slightly altered form from what was seen in his 2006 collection “I Am Alive in Los Angeles!” That earlier book’s titular poem also gets updated, as “I Am Still Alive in Los Angeles!,” with shout-outs to “millennials on bicycles” and “angels in a city singing/ synchronicity from Central to Century City.” “Elegy to Rootdown & Firecracker,” a key essay, passionately evokes
the late-’90s club scene, when the Rootdown, Firecracker and the Chocolate Bar fostered the synergistic spirit of the “Millennial Los Angeles hip-hop, funk, soul underground.” “People, music, vibes, beats, bass, life,” he writes. “A generation of us can testify, it’s been an amazing ride.” In the intervening years, Sonksen has become a husband, parent and professor, and he now writes journalistic essays as often as poems. “Letters to My City” reflects his life and worldview now, and the “Letters to Our City” event represents the community that inspired his personal and literary evolution. “The book is about living your values or living your ethics,” he says. “Everybody’s sharing the city together, [and] everyone’s story matters.” n Unheard LA presents “Letters to Our City” with host Mike Sonksen and fellow wordsmiths 7:30-9 p.m. Wednesday, July 24, at the Crawford Family Forum, 474 S. Raymond Ave., Pasadena; $12. Tickets and other info: kpcc.ticketleap.com/ letters-to-our-city--presented-by-unheard-la/. BLACK PUMAS, Black Pumas (ATO): HHHH
Charismatic frontman Eric Burton and producer/ ex-Grupo Fantasma guitarist Adrian Quesada, plus guest players, put a cosmic spin on matters of the heart with tracks like “Black Moon Rising,” the hypnotic “Sweet Conversations” and “Confines” (“We all shine then burn over/ Like the stars in the night/ So cast a dream and watch it glide”). Valley native Burton, who busked in Santa Monica before landing in Austin in 2015, is reminiscent of D’Angelo and Terence Trent D’Arby, gritty yet sweet, and while Quesada’s lyrics can be obtuse his fretwork and production are spot-on in evoking the mystique as well as the open-hearted passion of ’60s-’70s soul. theblackpumas.com
JENNY TOLMAN, There Goes the Neighborhood (Old Sol): HHH
The native Nashvillean is strongly reminiscent of Brandy Clark throughout her cheerful, twanging album debut. Tolman’s soft vocal tone magnifies her generosity of spirit even when she’s nailing characters with sharp details on snappy songs like “Work It” (“I’m just a coupon clipper with a push-up bra”), “High Class White Trash” and the amusing title track. Her melodic style and playful metaphors evoke traditional country, although “My Welcome Mat” stands as a contemporary anthem of tolerance (“In my living room ain’t no one out of place”). The category-defying singer/composer/producer veers from the more melodic songcraft of last year’s “Overload” with this experimental collection of spacey instrumentals, a sequel to her 2011 album. Sticky beats and textures make its 16 tracks aurally intriguing from a production standpoint; much of their chill allure lies in tracing and decipering interlaced funk, hip-hop, jazz and R&B elements. But it’s a rather esoteric exercise, and not recommended for anyone operating heavy machinery. Apropos of the gravity referenced in the Swahili title, it gets pretty heavy. georgiaannemuldrow.bandcamp.com/album/ vweto-ii
MANX MARRINER MAINLINE, Hell Bound for Heaven (Stony Plain): HHHH
A gut-satisfying from veteran guitarist Harry Manx and MoneyJunk frontman Steve Marriner, who intersperse heartfelt originals with blues and gospel chestnuts by Charlie Patton and the Staple Singers. Manx threads Marriner’s swampy title track with his mohan veena, a 20-stringed Indian lap slide instrument whose ethereal tones enhance the song’s account of spiritual search and reckoning behind Marriner’s gritty vocal. Other highlights include the Canadian duo’s moving ballad “Rise and Fall in Love” and a take on Rev. Gary Davis’ “Death Don’t Have No Mercy in This Land” that’s heavy on slide, vibe, and feel. stonyplainrecords.com, harrymanx.com, Moneyjunkband.com

here is no greater king in the family-film world these days than Disney, as the entertainment behemoth has snapped up everything from Marvel superhero films to the Muppets, and from the “Star Wars” universe to 20th Century Fox in recent years. Add in Pixar, ABC TV, ESPN and the nationwide Radio Disney network and there doesn’t seem to be a single overlooked opportunity to shake down families for their money. But two years ago, they indeed opened another vault by deciding to bring their line-drawn animated classics to CGI or actual real life when a live-action reboot of “Beauty and the Beast” brought in well over a billion dollars worldwide. Since then, they’ve followed suit with this summer’s smash live-action take on “Aladdin” and flew to just middling success with “Dumbo,” but now they’re poised to make their biggest hit yet in the new genre with this weekend’s release of the CGI version of “The Lion King.” Directed by Jon Favreau, who scored hugely with his 2016 live-action/CGI hybrid of “The Jungle Book,” this “Lion” appears to bring its African setting to stunning life despite the fact it’s entirely crafted on computer screens. The new version opens with an African woman’s voice singing the classic opening song “Circle of Life” in place of its songwriter Elton John’s version in the original, but it’s effective in making it clear that this version strives to be more realistic on the voiceover level as well. The story follows young lion cub Simba (Donald Glover), who is announced as the future heir to the throne of his father Mufasa, and wants to grow up fast. He takes the advice of his evil uncle Scar (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and visits the elephant graveyard over the horizon with his best friend and future mate Nala (Beyonce), despite his father telling him it’s a forbidden zone. Mufasa has to save the young pair from an attack by hyenas, yet later Simba follows Scar’s bad advice 20 PASADENA WEEKLY | 07.18.19
again and practices his roar in a canyon that echoes. The noise prompts a stampede of cows being chased by evil hyenas again, and when Mufasa is endangered while trying to save his son, Scar causes his death in a vicious betrayal and then convinces Simba that he’s at fault instead. Simba runs away in shame for many years, teaming up with a new duo of irresponsible friends named Pumbaa (Seth Rogen) and Timon (Billy Eichner), who try to convince him that the happiest way to live is by shirking all responsibilities. But when Nala finds him years later while seeking help to rid the kingdom of Scar, Simba is forced to take a stand that carries a great deal of consequences. The film follows the storyline of the 1994 original closely, but with an extra half-hour in its running time the story adds depth to the characters and provides the time needed to make its impressive action sequences achieve maximum impact. In fact, the one warning parents of young children should take heed is that the battles between the lions and the chase scenes with the hyenas in frenzied pursuit of the film’s young heroes might prove to be too much for younger children. Yet, there’s plenty of great comic relief with Rogen and Eichner perfectly filling in the roles of the mischievous Pumbaa and Timon, and John Oliver taking on the wise bird Zazu. In a perfect nod to the original cartoon, James Earl Jones reprises the role of Mufasa and gives him perhaps even more regal class and fury than he managed to perform a quarter-century ago. It’s almost impossible to find anything wrong with the film, continuing the Disney brand’s tradition of technical perfection matched with a heartfelt tale. They may have a glut of product in the marketplace, but they take the time to make their films at the highest possible level and audiences are ultimately the winners. n

CITY OF PASADENA NOTICE OF INTENT TO ADOPT A MITIGATED NEGATIVE DECLARATION AND NOTICE OF PUBLIC WORKSHOP PROJECT TITLE: Holly Street Bridge Seismic Retrofi t Project APPLICANT NAME: City of Pasadena PROJECT SITE ADDRESS: Holly Street Bridge over Arroyo Seco Flood Control Channel (southeast of Linda Vista Avenue) ZONING DISTRICT: ROW, OSOpen Space, RM-Multi-Family Residential, and RS-Single-Family Residential GENERAL PLAN DESIGNATION: Low Density Residential, Medium Density Residential, Open Space PROJECT DESCRIPTION:. The City of Pasadena, in coordination with the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), proposes to rehabilitate and seismically retrofi t the existing two-lane Holly Street Bridge (No. 53C1041) over the Arroyo Seco Channel, the Arroyo Seco Trail (a Class 1 multi-use trail), and North Arroyo Boulevard. The seismic retrofi t would occur on the Holly Street Bridge southeast of Linda Vista Avenue, and entirely within the City of Pasadena, Los Angeles County, California. The existing bridge was constructed in 1925 and is 45.3-feet wide by 400.0-feet long. The bridge is a concrete arch-deck span constructed from cast-in-place concrete. According to the Caltrans Bridge Inspection Report (BIR), the bridge currently (July 2016) holds a sufficiency rating of 39.4 and is classified as Structurally Deficient. The proposed Project would provide needed rehabilitation and a seismic retrofi t to the existing bridge. Bridge retrofi t and rehabilitation would include a deck and barrier replacement, luminaire replacement, archway stiffening, joint strengthening, column strengthening, pier cap strengthening, retrofi t foundation hold-downs, concrete spall repair, crack sealing, and a bonded grout treatment. Construction is estimated to last for approximately 18 months, and the Holly Street Bridge would be closed to vehicle and pedestrian traffic for approximately 9 months. The City plans to offer a detour route using Linda Vista Avenue, San Rafael Avenue, Colorado Boulevard, and Orange Grove Boulevard. ENVIRONMENTAL DETERMINATION: An Initial Study was prepared and concluded that the Proposed Project could have a significant effect on the environment; however, with inclusion of mitigation measures, these potential impacts would be reduced to a less than significant level.
