s I’ve found from writing this column for decades, humor is bound to offend someone who doesn’t find it funny. And now those humor-challenged folks have taken aim at our beloved Trader Joe’s, a company that is famous for not taking itself too seriously. TJs has recently been petitioned to remove “racist branding and packaging” from its products. The Change.org petition was started by Northern California high school senior Briones Bedell, who is described as a “youth human-rights activist interested in protecting intangible cultural content.” While I applaud Ms. Bedell’s activism, I’m torn about her aims. The idea of intangible cultural appropriation really bothers me. Why? Because it’s frequently women and girls who bear the brunt of this type of “consumer correctness.” However, before I get into consumer correctness — a term I just made up — I’ll get a bit more into the Trader Joe’s controversy. Like that Ms. Bedell’s call for Trader Joe’s to remove what she considers offensive packaging has created more awareness of the casual and commercial marketing of groups. That said, I’m wondering … offensive to whom? We had a lively discussion about this on NextDoor. Most poignant to me were the two women who said, “I never thought of my father’s name, José, as a racial slur.” Another woman said, “Ming? That’s my dad’s name!” and went on to ponder whether she was missing something. There’s a certain “more-woke-than-thou” righteousness going on here, and I’m sorry to say that my group — white middle-class CIS females — are often the most visible examples of that. On one end of the spectrum, Aunt Jemima and Uncle Ben’s are obvious cases of brand-based cultural appropriation and stereotyping that should have disappeared long ago. Similarly, if Trader Joe’s was marketing “Wetb**k” Frijoles or “G**k” Goodies, that would also be unquestionably repulsive. On the other end of the spectrum, so far, no one is calling for the removal of the Quaker man from oatmeal cartons. Apparently, he’s not a part of an “out” group. “Hey, get out of town, you dirty Quaker!” said no one. Ever. (Except when Quakers filed for conscientious objector status during the Vietnam War years… but I digress.) And this is not to say that Latino, Italian, Middle Eastern or Chinese people are not derided; they most certainly are. Speaking of “out” groups, I do not see women or girls of any stripe within TJs marketing schemes. Yes, I get it: the ethnic names are all plays on the word “Joe’s” … would it kill TJs to have something with Trader Josefina’s on it? If you know any teens, you’ll recognize that Ms. Bedell is in that phase of teen righteousness that is practically impenetrable. Predictably, she went after TJs packaging, not their management. I find the “packaging” of their executive suite typical. Five out of the seven executives listed at TJs are white men, the other two are women. From her photo, I can tell that Tracy Anderson is also white; there are no pictures of the other female executive, Kathy Cipolla. Race is a serious issue, one that our country seems finally willing to grapple with to some degree. As we as a nation focus on entrenched systemic racism in a way we’ve never done before, quite frankly, packaging is the least of our worries. It’s low-hanging fruit that makes us feel like we’ve gotten something done … by doing as little as possible. And for those of you who decry “political correctness,” I’m not on that bandwagon either. Political correctness, as with any social progress, has its extremes. I’m sorry to say that term has squelched meaningful conversations between fundamentally good people. I know white people who are so fearful of being non-PC that they don’t broach subjects that could reveal their own racist brainwashing. As a result of this column, I expect to be scolded or even “canceled” by some readers. Everyone is so darned ready to fight!
Meanwhile, I believe that many of us are unwittingly engaging in what one of our greatest American public intellectuals, the late great, very Black, and humorous Florynce Kennedy, pegged as “horizontal hostility.” Many of us know people who are lurking on Facebook, ready to school, scold, and shame people who are allies. Horizontal hostility is like that: you attack and correct people who are on your team. It makes one feel like they’re doing “something” while meanwhile, the “man behind the curtain” keeps pulling the social, emotional, and economic strings that keep people down and powerless. Back to consumer correctness: As a person who has been active with the United Nations system for Non-Governmental Organizations since 1995, I’ve seen the damage that our zeal to protect intangible cultural artifacts has on women and girls. I have been given lovely gifts or purchased items to wear from women I’ve met in developing countries. They want me to wear their crafts; they make their living from these garments or accessories. I wear some of my so-called ethnic pieces to global conferences as “bait,” and it often works. Example: When I wear something from Oaxaca, people who care about or are from Oaxaca come up to me to talk about the status of women in Oaxaca. When white activists see me wearing such items, I often get lectured on how I’m stealing Oaxacan culture! Because of these attitudes, well-meaning but clueless activists in the United States have impacted the financial health of artisans in developing countries. And speaking of unintended consequences, our exports of cast-off clothing has people wearing American brand t-shirts all over the world, thus again, undermining women’s traditional ways of putting food on their tables through sewing. Please, I don’t care to be relegated to colorless, plain, white middle-class branding on my purchases. Ruth’s Rice? Billy’s Buttermilk Pancakes? Tommy’s Tortillas? No thanks. And voilá! As of this writing, the topic is moot over at TJs. In response to the petition, which had almost 5000 signatures, TJs corporate stated they had already started re-branding their products back in 2017. (eye-roll) Sure they were. Now that’s funny! n Ellen has been writing “Consider This” for a long time! She also is a writing coach. Contact her at beautybitesbeast.com

IT’S TIME AGAIN TO PROTECT OUR DEMOCRACY
T
he death of Congressman John Lewis brings to mind the vital importance of the passage of the Voting Rights Advancement Act of 2019, which was passed by the house in December 2019 and sat before Mitchell McConnell and the Senate for more than 200 days. This law is “to restore protections of voting rights by setting new criteria for determining which states and political divisions must obtain preclearance before changes to voting practices in these areas may take effect.” McConnell’s refusal to bring this bill forward is part of multiple efforts to suppress voter participation in the upcoming election. When combined with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the threats to the economy posed by the Trump administration’s mishandling of the pandemic, we face real threats to our democracy. Thousands have found their names removed from the voter rolls for missing an election. Others were denied voting rights for a felony crime for which they served time and have returned to society. Still others had the same name as someone convicted of crime. All Sam Smiths had their names removed from the rolls because a Sam Smith was in jail. Some were simply told they had not registered. Voting centers have been closed. Early voting options have been eliminated. Voting by mail has been challenged. And the list of efforts to eliminate voting rights goes on. The Voting Rights Advancement Act of 2019 would eliminate at least some efforts to rob us of voting rights. But we have a long history of fighting for voting rights. In the early 19th century working men demanded the removal of the property requirements which the founders of our country had set. Those men thought voting rights should be limited to adult, white men, 21 years of age or older who owned property. Slowly, summer after summer, working men who could never afford to buy land, succeeded in removing the property requirement and gained voting rights. Free Black men were also in the choir demanding voices in the democracy. Free black men in Baltimore, including William Watkins, James Deaver, James McCune Smith, Charles Hackett and others, worked around the slave codes to purchase property, open their own businesses, and even testify in court. They also called for voting rights. While they did not succeed in the 1830s, ’40s and ’50s, the language of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, passed July 9, 1868, which defined citizenship for those born in the United States (excluding Native Americans) is strikingly similar to the language these early 19th century free Black men used in seeking the franchise and an end to slavery. Likewise, the 15th Amendment, which was to have granted African American men the franchise, was modeled on language they used in demands for voting rights The Jim Crow laws in the south robbed these citizens of the franchise, but their battles continued. In the summer of 1962, the 24th Amendment to the Constitution prohibited the revocation of voting rights for the failure to pay a poll tax. Then in August of 1965, the Voting Rights Act was passed providing voting rights to African American citizens, including women who should have been included under the 19th Amendment. White women also demanded voting rights. As early as 1838, Sarah Grimke wrote about the rights women should have. Using the story of creation as recorded in the first book of Genesis, she argued that women and men were created equal in the eyes of God. While the battle for female suffrage did not take off for another two decades, it would eventually be won 70 years later, in the summer (August) 1920. Voting rights for Native Americans was also a long struggle. Not until June of 1924 did the Snyder Law establish that our indigenous people were citizens. However voting rights are established by states and it took decades the franchise to be established, state by state. The Supreme Court decision, McGirt v. Oklahoma, July 9, 2020, which ruled tribes in Oklahoma had rights to land granted them in 1832, represents another important summer action protecting rights. Some of us take voting rights for granted, but we need to pressure the Senate to pass the Voting Rights Advancement Act of 2019! Then be sure to register to vote. Get your friends, neighbors, and others are registered. Support the “Vote by Mail” an option for all citizens. And vote in November. Our democracy is at stake. n 07.30.20 | PASADENA WEEKLY 5

s a pastor of Westminster Presbyterian Church, the Rev. Dr. Twining F. Campbell misses the terrible jokes he used to exchange with parishioners. “You miss all of it,” Twining said. “There was a man in our church who died at the end of May. Every week he would come out and he would have some terrible joke. I had to come up with a terrible joke and then we would laugh about it… You miss all of that. The friendship, the fellowship.” Now standing alone, preaching to an empty church that could seat 600 people, Campbell and other places of worship across the state must now learn how to provide support for their parishioners throughout this pandemic. After a brief reopening, these beautiful and ornate places of worship have now reverted to closing their doors, like Campbell who now records his services alongside his wife. The Rev. Dr. Martha M. Campbell. Others lucky enough to have outdoor space adapted to allow some of their community to gather in gardens, parking lots or yards. Built in 1927, drawing influences from the Basilica of Santa Sabina and Romanesque architecture, St. Andrew Church stands an architectural masterpiece, garnering a place in the National Register of Historic Places. Normally able to seat about 700 people, the church now can only hold at most 60 people outside as the sanctity of the services are sometimes interrupted by passing cars. “We can accommodate maybe 50 or 60 people. We can’t have masses outdoors in the middle of the day because the heat is prohibitive,” said Father Marcos Gonzalez. In addition to the heat, the outdoors forces the pastors to compete with the sounds of the world around them. “It’s very disorienting because we’re outside. We have the freeway noise. We have the noise of the traffic. We have the noise of the birds in the piazza. The CONTINUED ON PAGE 8

formality is not there,” said Gonzalez. “We’re doing the best we can to make sure that we make the sacraments available to our people.” With the limited number of attendees, Gonzalez and the church try to provide support to those who cannot attend by reaching out to their parishioners. “I maintain contact with the parishioners by sending out every single week, which we never did before,” said Gonzalez. “We call them on a regular basis. They [can] access our website, which is maintained up to date all the time. It’s all online stuff and on the telephone.” In addition to letters and phone calls, Gonzalez and the church make house calls, primarily for those who are sick, visiting them and comforting them. They also provide some services such as confessions, funerals and weddings outdoors with smaller crowds. “Nothing, nothing even close to this has ever happened to any of our lifetimes — this is completely different for everybody,” said Gonzalez. “The church has never really been shut down like this ever, other than during wars.” Just like with wars, people fear the future and many houses of worship try to help their communities stay together and connected to help them persevere. “People are scared. People are afraid,” said Abo-Ahmed, the chairman of the Islamic Center in Glendale. “They see the statistics and they do not come in to worship, but we cannot stop the worship of our Lord. This is the time that we got to turn to our Lord, the creator of humanity and the entire universe… to have him lift the calamity from the entire humanity not just Muslims.” Ahmed sees the decrease in the attendance as though his family has been shrinking and believes many don’t feel the same support they once had prepandemic. The mosque usually has around 200 attendees but now the number has been cut by more than half with many staying at home fearing the virus. The mosque still holds services over livestreams and other videos. “The kindness of people is still there,” Ahmed said. While his community has been relegated to their homes Ahmed, believes it is for the best for not only Muslims but for the whole world. “Let’s help each other, put our hands in each others hand and let us try to sail this ocean of many issues that involves all of us — no matter how different we are,” said Ahmed. “We are human beings. We are from Adam and Eve. We are one family, a human family. Humanity should cooperate with each other and help each other greatly.” n

FIREFIGHTERS, THE CRACK SHACK TEAM FOR BENEFIT BY CHRISTINA FUOCO-KARASINSKI
T
he Fire Family Foundation is hosting a fundraiser with The Crack Shack Restaurant Thursday, July 30, so it can continue its mission of supporting first responders. “Our mission is to support them in times of need,” said Elizabeth Dever, executive director of the Fire Family Foundation. “Our scope is nationwide. Even though we’re in Pasadena, we help firefighters from all throughout the country. We live our mission through four core programs.” The fundraiser was originally scheduled for July 23. After September 11, 2001, when more than 340 New York City firefighters were lost in the World Trade Center attack, Firefighters First Federal Credit Union was entrusted with charitable donations made by members of the fire service and the community. The response resulted in the vision to establish a nonprofit foundation focused on serving the firefighting community. In 2008, the Fire Family Foundation was started. Firefighters First Federal Credit Union supports the Fire Family Foundation’s overhead costs, so 100% of donations to the foundation go directly to support its mission and programs. The foundation financially assists firefighters and their families when they are experiencing hardships. They apply for funding and the organization pays a bill. “If there’s a challenge and they need help with, say, paying a medical bill, we’ll go ahead and pay that,” Dever said. “If it’s a car payment, we’ll help them out and put them on the right track.” The Fire Family Foundation also supported the Fire Service Psychology Association redesign its website by finding a contractor and helping pay for it. “We thought they could better reach their people through a new website,” she said. When there’s a federally declared disaster, the Fire Family Foundation offers financial assistance in the form of gift cards and supplies. Finally, the foundation has a merit-based scholarship program for children of active, retired or fallen firefighters. As for the fundraiser, supporters can dine in, go through the drive-thru, or place orders via the website, crackshack.com, or phone. The Crack Shack will donate 15% of the orders directly to Fire Family Foundation when guests mention the charity. Fire Family Foundation officials will be at the 30 W. Green Street location in Pasadena, but the offer is valid at 196 E. 17th Street in Costa Mesa, and 407 Encinitas Boulevard in Encinitas, too. tips related to the death of Ray Magee Jr., 24, who was found shot in the 1500 block of North Lake Avenue on May 23. The Duarte resident was riding inside a black Toyota Camry with another male, according to the PPD. Magee was transported to a local hospital, where he died. The second victim, a 23-year-old man, sustained a gunshot wound, by survived. Surveillance video obtained captured the suspect vehicle, a 2017 Dodge Charger with tinted windows, the PPD said. The suspect(s) responsible for the murder and attempted murder of the two victims were last seen fleeing south on Lake Avenue. Since the initial investigation, police said, Pasadena Police homicide detectives have been following up on witnesses’ information. Although unconfirmed, it appears the shooting involved a feud between a local Pasadena gang and a rival gang from the Duarte area, which recently resurfaced in early May, prior to this murder, according to the PPD. Anyone with tips is asked to call Pasadena Police anytime at 626-744-4241, or to report anonymously, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477, or visit lacrimestoppers.org. COVID EASILY SPREAD THROUGH WORKPLACES, FERRER SAYS BY MATTHEW RODRIGUEZ
R
ep. Adam Schiff (D-Pasadena) and Los Angeles County Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer hosted a telephone town hall on July 21 to update constituents on the ever-evolving pandemic. “Our state is, unfortunately, breaking records and all the wrong kind,” said Schiff. “From increased hospitalizations to daily records for newly confirmed cases. That means we are all going to really redouble our efforts to social distance, wash our hands [and] wear masks to slow the spread of the virus before more Californians’ [lives] are cut tragically short.” The press conference came at a time where the United States continued to be the epicenter of the global pandemic recording over 4 million cases as of Sunday, July 26. California also recorded one of the most amounts of cases with over 450,000 cases. Southern California is the hardest hit in the entire state with the top five counties in the number of cases: Los Angeles, Riverside, Orange, San Bernardino and San Diego. LA County accounts for about a third of the state’s total cases with almost 173,000. “The surge in infections and the subsequent illness, hospitalization and death is attributed to the reality that starting four weeks ago more and more people in LA County began to be in close contact with each other,” said Ferrer. Ferrer added that on reopening many establishments did not enforce the health codes established by public health officials, which contributed to the further rise. “Our initial inspection at workplaces including restaurants and bars showed poor compliance with the public health directives,” said Ferrer. “The unfortunate
reality is because the virus is spread by individuals who often have no symptoms, people are easily able to spread the infection at their workplaces, within their families and among the general public.” According to the California Department of Public Health, Latinos are disproportionately affected by the virus. Of the states’ approximately 450,000 cases 56% of those infected are Latino. Of the states’ 8,416 deaths, 46% are Latino. LA County reflects the same data with infections and deaths amongst Latinos being the highest in the Adam Schiff county. “The most devastating reality of this spread is that our black and brown residents and people living in high poverty communities are bearing the brunt of this virus,” said Ferrer. “They’re exponentially more likely to be infected with the virus and they’re dying of the virus at the rates of two to four times greater than people who live in wealthier communities and residents who are white.” Schiff and Ferrer also fielded questions from their constituents, one of which regarded the mandatory masks. Ferrer took an opportunity to convey a message of unity and compassion to those who fail to follow the orders. “I think kindness goes a long way here,” said Ferrer. “I think helping people understand that they are wearing a face covering to show you care about other people… This is about you caring enough for other people that are around you.” n 07.30.20 | PASADENA WEEKLY 9

hen Rabbi John Carrier arrived in Pasadena, he had no idea how much he would fall in love with it. He had an interim role at Pasadena Jewish Temple & Center, and missing being a regular part of a community. “My friends at PJTC needed some help during a time of change,” Carrier said. “Little did I know how much my family and I would grow to love this particular community—and how important online learning would become for all communities in this historic moment.” Pasadena Jewish Temple & Center recently hired Carrier as its senior rabbi. The entire community looks forward to Carrier’s official installation on August 16. The center’s president, Geoffrey DeBoskey, said while Carrier was temporarily employed, the congregation enjoyed his caring, warm and engaging demeanor, strong teaching skills and ability to connect with a wide range of generations. “From the moment Rabbi Carrier first began working with our community on an interim basis, I was impressed by him as a person and a rabbi, and I am very excited to now be working with him both on PJTC’s needs today and ensuring the synagogue remains strong for many years to come,” DeBoskey said. The center’s executive director, Beryl Strauss, is looking forward to Carrier’s continued leadership of the temple and center. “He has shown to me a sincere willingness to be fully present with the congregation,” Strauss said. “Actively listening is one of Rabbi Carrier’s strong suits, as well as his incredible collaboration and inspirational teaching ability. I see Rabbi Carrier being the lightning rod to the congregation for the future.” Cantor Ruth Berman Harris says, “I am so blessed to have Rabbi Carrier as my partner. We are so very different and complement each other so well; it is the greatest gift to work with him and lead the PJTC community to higher grounds.” PJTC describes itself as an open-minded, conservative-movement based congregation with a traditional and creative take on Judaism. The temple and center serve members hailing from throughout the San Gabriel Valley. As one of the oldest congregations in the area, it has built an intergenerational, diverse and rich community with more than 475 families. Carrier was ordained at the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies at American Jewish University. He previously served as the rabbi of Burbank Temple Emanu El, a diverse conservative synagogue in Burbank. Carrier is especially passionate about Jewish adult education. He has taught for the Miller Introduction to Judaism program for more than five years and the Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning for two years. In 2018, he published his first book, “The Promised Life,” and he founded The Jewcurious School, an online learning portal especially for people around the world who don’t have access to synagogues or traditional settings for Jewish learning. Besides teaching formal classes at PJTC and around Los Angeles, Carrier has created many free resources online to help people learn about basic (and not-sobasic) Jewish ideas and traditions, including more than 200 videos on YouTube. In addition to serving the PJTC community, Carrier sits on the local Rabbinical Assembly Batei Din (rabbinic courts) for conversion to Judaism and for Gittin (Jewish rituals for divorce). Carrier is a native Texan, but lived throughout the country before settling in Southern California 10 years ago. He and his wife, Kara, have two adult sons and two young daughters, and together they enjoy comedy, puzzles, mysteries and cooking. Info: pjtc.net. n

write about taco stands and fancy French restaurants to try to get people less afraid of their neighbors and to live in their entire city…” — Jonathan Gold
Writer and Altadena resident Jervey Tervalon says his best friend, the late Pulitzer Prize-winning food writer, Jonathan Gold, was “absolutely fearless.” Gold, who would have turned 60 on July 28, lived in northeast Pasadena for over 20 years with his wife, L.A. Times editor Laurie Ochoa and their two children, before his untimely passing from pancreatic cancer in 2018. Tervalon was Gold’s long-time wingman accompanying the intrepid critic in his beloved battered pick-up truck to distant corners of Los Angeles ferreting out obscure ethnic specialties hidden in strip malls or tasting the latest gastroexperiments from high-end avant-garde chefs. Tervalon has a cameo in the documentary “City of Gold” released in 2015 and directed by Laurie Gabbert, which chronicled Gold’s L.A. beat and his inspirations as a critic and food writer. He was known to be consummately generous as a critic and went out of his way to identify restaurants and chefs, who were otherwise unknown and struggling. As the film illustrates, Gold’s benevolent attention saved businesses and families. “He made me famous,” Rosario Mazzeo of Roma Market and the inventor of “The Sandwich” (PW 5/20) says. When asked if Gold coined the name for the eponymous icon, Mazzeo shakes his head but with more emphasis repeats, “He made me famous!” Roma Market was one of several local favorites Gold cited in my one precious extended conversation with him at a dinner party years ago. The nowclosed “Slaw Dogs” had just opened on Lake Avenue. Having been there a couple of times and figuring I had a hot tip, I asked if he had checked it out. He simply replied, “Didn’t you see my review today?” You could not scoop the guy. It’s the day after the second anniversary of Gold’s passing and I’m sitting with Tervalon at the lovely breezy and shaded outdoor dining area of Bulgarini’s (PW 7/9). Gelato maestro Leo Bulgarini was also a favorite and close friend of Gold’s, who discovered Bulgarini’s gelato when the budding chef was scooping it from a pushcart in the courtyard of the Pacific Asia Museum in 2006. In my initial conversation with Bulgarini he allowed, “What helped us stay alive was that Jonathan wrote about us.” He recounts a series of chance meetings with Gold in Italy, who was on tour with chef Nancy Silverton. Meeting in Naples for pizza and sharing smuggled balls of fresh mozzarella during intermission at the Roman Opera, the two quickly bonded. Bulgarini brings us our lunch of Pici al ‘Aglione – thick hand-pressed noodles, as fat as udon, slathered with piquant garlic tomato sauce—and hot oven-fresh focaccia, as Tervalon recalls tagging along with Gold on culinary adventures in Guadalajara and New Orleans. Tervalon met Gold in high school, when Gold’s mother was the head librarian at Dorsey High School, where Tervalon was a student. The two became close friends when Gold served on staff at the L.A. Weekly in the mid-1980s and Tervalon’s writing career was just taking off. Gold was best man at Tervalon’s wedding and the two friends were integral to the founding of Pasadena LitFest, which Tervalon still oversees. So where did Gold hang out in Pasadena? From my long ago conversation with him, besides Roma Market, he mentioned Burrito Express on Washington Boulevard (PW 2/5 ), where I, too, endorse the JVC Burrito and Tonny’s, now Vero’s (PW 7/2), on Orange Grove, where he regularly enjoyed the fresh-made juices, which Vero’s still offers. Tervalon recalls Gold’s effusive interest in “a German butcher shop in Montrose,” which we surmise to be Gelsinger’s Meats Market Deli, where Gold apparently sourced beef cheeks. Euro Pane bakery was on Gold’s local circuit before founding master baker Sumi Chang sold the operation in 2017. Further-flung personal favorites of

Gold’s included La Super Rica in Santa Barbara and the venerable Jocko’s Steakhouse in Nipomo, where he would escort an entourage for steak and burger expeditions. Our pasta bowls are now empty save for a slick of sauce, when Leo Bulgarini returns with scoops of his favorite gelato combination: strawberry and mascarpone. “C’mon Jervey … what else you got?” Silence ensues as we sink into momentary gelato rapture. Finally, Tervalon offers, “Conrad’s.” “Conrad’s?” The 40-year old “family-style” diner on Walnut and Lake that also notably advertised “cocktails” had long puzzled me but not strongly enough for a visit. It seemed an unlikely regular landing for Gold but then again, maybe not. “He could relax there,” Tervalon explains. Conrad’s has closed temporarily during the lockdown but still advertises for takeout. If they’re on the menu, the chicken livers were Gold’s go-to order. OK, here’s the first posthumous list of Jonathan Gold’s personal local favorites: • Conrad’s • Bulgarini’s • Roma Market • Burrito Express • Tonny’s (now Vero’s) • Gelsinger’s Deli (Montrose) • La Super Rica (Santa Barbara) • Jocko’s Steakhouse (Nipomo) It seems a blessing and a curse and perhaps also a sign of Gold’s prescient sense of timing that he is missing from the pandemic’s interminable havoc and mayhem. We can only wonder what he might make of it. As Tervalon suggests via email following our lunch at Bulgarini’s, “He’d be chasing taco trucks wearing a mask.” Regardless, rest assured, Gold still haunts the beat.

Dale Ho from “The Fight,” a Magnolia Pictures release.
INSPIRING NEW DOCUMENTARY TRACKS FIVE ACLU LAWYERS FIGHTING LANDMARK CASES BY BLISS BOWEN

T
he title sequence for the Sundance Jury Prize-winning documentary “The Fight,” which follows five ACLU lawyers as they pursue four landmark cases, includes a tally of all the lawsuits, 147 and rising, filed by the ACLU against the Trump administration. According to Silver Lake resident Eli B. Despres, who co-directed the film with Elyse Steinberg and Josh Kriegman (the trio behind “Weiner”), the original cut just listed a number but it changed so often during filming that they eventually “decided to just have the ticker sound continue to run as that number slides offscreen.” That ramps up the dramatic tension of a film about cases whose ramifications for American citizens could scarcely be more urgent. Lawyers Brigitte Amiri, Joshua Block, Lee Gelernt, Dale Ho and Chase Strangio defend constitutional rights relating to abortion, immigration, voting, and transgender protections — abstract constructs given human form in indelible images: immigrant children in cages, a keening mother rocking her rediscovered daughter in a stairwell, airport crowds protesting the Trump administration’s Muslim ban, a 17-year-old Jane Doe facing away from the camera at an Office of Refugee Resettlement shelter while explaining her fight for an abortion. “We did not know how easy or hard it was going to be to make a movie about attorneys exciting and interesting,” Despres said. “We were lit up to realize we had an action courtroom thriller on our hands and not an essay movie about impact litigation.” Amiri, Block, Gelernt, Ho and Strangio come across as beacons of hope and, not incidentally, brilliant advertisements for the value of competence. Viewer response may be determined by pre-existing attitudes toward the ACLU, but if nothing else the film’s insights should provoke serious discussion of the ACLU’s mission at this critical historical juncture. As Ho says, in what could be the film’s thesis statement: “If I’m not going to be a civil rights lawyer right now, in this moment, when?” “There seems to be an appetite for this story,” Despres said, explaining why making a film about lawyers fighting for Americans’ civil rights was a “no-brainer” for the production team. “So we’re really excited to be part of the conversation.” The ACLU’s ardent defense of free speech and civil rights can be a lightning rod for controversy, and a striking sequence shows Amiri, Block, Gelernt, Ho and Strangio reading aloud from their hate mail and listening to vituperative voicemail messages. Some laugh, but the laughs hurt. Ho pins a hateful postcard to the wall over his desk like a strangely humbling talisman. Another, crucial passage covers the tricky intersection of hate speech with free speech in a democracy (a meaty subject worthy of another, separate documentary) and the ACLU’s defense of the Unite the Right rally’s right to take place in Charlottesville in 2017. Staff lawyers voice their staunch opposition to a case that clearly still rankles. “There is strong disagreement within that organization about how to prioritize the fight for free speech for people with views that everyone there finds abhorrent,” De-
spres noted. “You see it in the [scenes about] the fascists in Charlottesville. It’s complicated, and there’s a lot of internal debate at the ACLU. I think it makes the story a lot more interesting and frankly makes me feel a lot more excited about the organization that they’re capable of that self-examination and internal dissent, and that they can process that.” In another scene, Josh Block, who identifies himself as a cisgender male, and Chase Strangio, who is transgender, talk about how to balance the need for lawyers possessing substantial courtroom experience with the need for lawyers who actually belong to the communities they’re representing. It’s a brief but meaningful exchange poking into a little-explored aspect of the ACLU’s work. “I think that it really drives home the complicated factors in these issues of representation,” Despres said. “I was in a Q&A with Josh Block where he was talking about [how] he doesn’t get the hate mail that Chase does. And it’s why representation is important — there’s something really critical in having voices from the communities tell their own stories. It’s something we’re wrestling with in the filmmaking community too. It’s changing quickly and it’s good that it’s changing quickly. I’m proud of that scene, and I’m grateful to them for being that vulnerable in that moment while our cameras were rolling.” Little is shown of the ACLU’s behind-the-scenes support staff, but in humanizing scenes we do see the lawyers talking strategy in their offices, making dinner with their families at home, and hitting the road for clients. Amiri blinks back exhaustion at her laptop while preparing case notes; she and her assistant are later shown celebrating with “train wine” after winning their case. Ho laughs at himself in the bathroom mirror while practicing — and flubbing — his opening statement the night before arguing his first case before the Supreme Court (Department of Commerce v. New York). Gelernt’s befuddled inability to keep his cellphone charged provides comic relief, but the look on his face as he says he thinks about his own kids while defending immigrant children taken from their parents is crushing. “Lee has children and he’s living and dying by what’s happening to his clients. You can see when he finds out he’s lost the Muslim case while he’s live on air at MSNBC and he gets gutpunched, this is not just a job to this man,” Despres observed. “They all suffer from a surfeit of empathy, and they’re heroic in what they’re willing to do.” “The Fight” will be available to view via Laemmle’s Virtual Cinema and other on-demand platforms beginning July 31. ctor Jerry O’Connell was on a set of a TV show and frequently complaining about his life, when a coworker gave him a copy of the book “The Secret.” “I said, ‘Oh brother. This is going to be like a cult,’” O’Connell recalled. “I read it and it was very helpful. It was a really crazy time in my life professionally. I know it sounds cheesy to say this, but I visualized if they ever made a scripted version of the film, I wanted to be in it.” He is. “The Secret: Dare to Dream” hit premium video on demand outlets on July 31. The film was originally slated for an April 17 theatrical release by Roadside Attractions, but the COVID-19 pandemic changed that. The movie tells the story of Miranda Wells (Katie Holmes), a hard-working young widow struggling to raise three children, when she encounters Bray Johnson (Josh Lucas). He’s carrying—literally—a secret that could change Miranda’s life. Meanwhile, she’s involved with her coworker, Tucker, played by O’Connell. Written by Rhonda Byrne, “The Secret” was one of 2006’s best-selling self-help books, based on an earlier film of the same name. It is based on the belief of the law of attraction, which claims that thoughts can change a person’s life directly. It sold 30 million copies worldwide and has been translated into 50 languages. “The book has such a fanbase,” O’Connell said. “It has changed so many people’s lives. I’m interested to see what ardent followers of the rules of attraction will think about the scripted version of their beloved book. “It’s an international phenomenon, ‘The Secret.’ This is a dramatic version of
that. I think the most challenging part is making sure the secret, this is the dramatic version of that. I think the most challenging part is making sure—I wouldn’t call it the fans—the followers of ‘The Secret’ are happy with what we did.” The movie was directed by Andy Tennant, with whom Lucas fans would be familiar because he helmed “Sweet Home Alabama” as well. “They certainly got the right person when they got Andy Tennant to come do it,” O’Connell said. “He’s our writer/director and I guess he really is one of the kings of rom-com. It was just so interesting that they went to him with the scripted version of ‘The Secret.’” O’Connell is keeping busy these days. Amazon’s IMDB TV is carrying his show “Carter,” which is about an actor who played a cop on television and has a problem determining the difference between reality and fiction. He also voices Cmdr. Jack Ransom on CBS All Access’ “Star Trek: Lower Decks,” which premieres on August 10. He describes the 10-episode run as a comedic version of “Star Trek.” During the pandemic, O’Connell says he’s using his “laws of attraction” talents and visualization techniques to get his kids back in school. (He’s kidding.) He’s hoping that fans and followers of “The Secret” have as much fun with the movie as he did. “It was a fun set,” O’Connell saids. “Katie Holmes is such a doll She’s so much fun to work with. “And man, I wasn’t playing his love interest, but that Josh Lucas is so dreamy. I had scenes with him—not to judge him—but I do get lost in his Paul Newman-esque blue eyes.” n 07.30.20 | PASADENA WEEKLY 19
