“My husband Kevin passed away. We were married for 33 years. He did all the accounting, and I had no clue about our finances. I didn’t know if the lights were going to be shut off. The team at Hughes Federal Credit Union was amazing, helping me learn to manage my household expenses. When you are feeling vulnerable and someone goes the extra mile, that is true kindness.” — Patti G.

After a few thousand miles this year spent driving Arizona’s interstates, I’ve come to a conclusion: There are two kinds of people left in this fine nation of ours. People who slap bumper stickers on their car. And normal people. As someone who belongs to the latter group, I’ve spent many a mile wondering (a) why anyone feels compelled to tell the driving public how strongly they feel about this or that politician, religious figure or college sports team and (b) why it seems that certain vehicles inevitably sport certain opinions. I mean, does Subaru apply the “Coexist” bumper sticker standard at the factory or is it an after-market option? Then there’s Leibowitz’s First Law of Vehicular Dynamics: the higher the lifted pickup truck, the greater the likelihood of you coming eye level with an anti-Biden sticker or that old standby, “Don’t Blame Me. I Voted For Trump.” In 2017, a seller of cheap auto insurance commissioned a survey of more than 2,000 U.S. drivers and arrived at a total I don’t believe in the slightest: that 50% of men have bumper stickers on their vehicles versus 63% of women. The same survey put Arizona toward the lower end of likelihood to sport a bumper sticker by state, i.e, somewhere between 55% and 60% of drivers. Personally, my gut says the bumper sticker brigade is less than 20% of the population, with maybe half of those making some overt political statement. Of course, the survey above was completed in 2017. Ever since, America has been hurtling at an exponential clip toward blatant insanity. In my house, my parents raised us with a simple mantra I’ve mentioned before: “It’s one thing to be an idiot, but it’s another to open your mouth and prove it to everyone.” Bumper stickers fly in the face of that edict, which is surely the point.

Once upon a time, we kept potentially controversial opinions to ourselves, because we didn’t know whom we might offend. Now? We adorn our bumpers precisely in the hopes of “owning the libs” or sparking a case of “MAGA Madness.” The nastier the saying, the prouder the driver. I’ve started keeping a list: “I Support Global Warming,” with an arrow directed toward the exhaust pipe of a massive Silverado. “My Other Ride Is Your Mom.” “I’m Anti-Trump Because I’m Anti-Stupid.” Then, not even a half hour later on a Range Rover speeding up the 17: “Does The Ass Make My SUV Look Big,” with a goofy mugshot of old Joe Biden. I’ve tried to imagine which cause circa 2022 would so motivate me that I’d feel compelled to advertise it to the world at 75 miles per hour. It wouldn’t be political; there’s not a politician or political party in existence for which I’d risk my Kelley Blue Book resale value. The same goes for allegiance to sports franchises and dog breeds, and my stances on social issues like guns, abortion, gay rights and tolerance. It’s not that I don’t feel strongly about such things, because I do. But I feel with equal passion that I don’t want to be defined by five or six words on the back of my car, a pithy blasphemy that virtually every other occupant of the freeway will either hate or ignore completely. Bumper stickers today advertise our belonging to certain clubs, and I’ve never been much of a joiner. Though there is one bumper sticker I saw and thought about buying, because I agree with it wholeheartedly. “I Was Convinced By A Bumper Sticker,” goes the saying, “Said No One Ever.” Probably written by some driver’s really smart honor student. Ask Marisa

It’s never too late to start over BY MARISA PEER

Q

Dear Marisa: I am 56 and after my children flew the nest and left for college last year, my partner of 30 years and I split up. We realized that even though we still have love for one another, we had only stayed together for the sake of the children and have nothing in common anymore. While the split was a mutual decision, it has thrown me into a bit of a tailspin as I have realized that I have no idea who I am beyond the role of wife and mother and feel altogether a bit lost. I have also been (unhappily) in the same job for 20 years and feel like I’m stuck in a rut, but it seems too late to go and start something new. I always had a dream to be a veterinarian, but with years of training just to get into the job, I can’t help but think it’s too late. It seems like most people my age are looking ahead to retirement but it feels like I am having to start all over again before I can even consider retiring. I am thinking of starting my own business, but it seems such a scary prospect! Is it really possible to start over at 56? And where do I even start? Help, Marisa! - Freebird, Tucson

A

Dear Freebird: It’s never too late to discover your life purpose and change direction. In fact, when your children have grown up and flown the nest, it is the perfect time for you to finally find the time to focus on yourself and look at exactly what makes you happy. Fifty really is the new 40, and I see so many people successfully transforming their personal and professional lives in their 50s because they have greater time, freedom and life experience to pour into new ventures. However, many are held back by the fear of the unknown, selfdoubt, and worries about failing. What you have to remember is that this fear of what might go wrong isn’t real; it’s just your mind’s way of protecting itself — scanning for any “threats.” Your mind www.LovinLife.com

loves what is familiar, which is why it encourages you to stay in the same job for 20 years, as this makes it feel “safe.” This is why so many of us just continue to coast in life and stick with what we know even when we are unhappy. One of the major causes of depression is failing to follow your heart’s desire — but it’s about having the mindset to find your passion, pursue it with unshakeable confidence, and you really can start over, becoming a success at any stage of your life. While you might find the prospect daunting, try to reposition it as an adventure. Get clear about what it is that makes your heart sing and look at how you can use that passion to do more of what makes you happy — whether it’s rekindling a long-forgotten hobby or even using that passion as a springboard to a new career. Start by sitting down and writing a list of all the things you love to do. Ask yourself questions. “What makes me happy?” “What brings me joy?” “What makes me feel energized?” “What skills do I have that I could bring to a new role or business?” If you’re not sure, tapping into the passions you had as a child between the ages of 7 and 14 can be key to finding where your special skills and talents lay. As a child, I loved to write, and here I am now, a best-selling author of six books. Jo

Malone loved making potions out of rose petals as a child and went on to build a hugely successful fragrance empire. Think outside the box, too. In your letter, you talk about working as a veterinarian but feel it’s too late to start studying again. What about other roles working with animals? How about volunteering at a vets or animal sanctuary? Or why not investigate business opportunities such as pet sitting, dog walking or day care, or training as a groomer or pet behavior expert — all of these are in demand, don’t require years of expensive training, and build on your love of animals. I have put together a guided meditation specifically on “Finding your Life’s Purpose,” which, I think, would really help you relax and get a clearer vision of where you want to be. But if you find you are still struggling, I also have a fantastic short course that helps you identify and understand your purpose. It covers the secret of quickly finding out what you are meant to do and what you love to do, then uses my hypnotic audio to instill you with the confidence, ambition, drive and self-belief you need to move forward. And when you feel any fear creeping in, remember to trick your mind by reframing that thought, telling yourself, “It’s not fear. It’s excitement, and I’ve got this!” Go out there, be all that you want to be, and good luck with your journey. - Much love, Marisa Send your questions to media@marisapeer.com, and keep up with me online at marisapeer.com, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. “Tell Yourself a Better Lie: Use the Power of Rapid Transformational Therapy to Edit Your Story and Rewrite Your Life” is available on Amazon.

RETURNING

HOME

Brent Strom enjoys his time with the D-backs BY CHRISTINA FUOCO-KARASINSKI After 50 years in baseball, Brent Strom is putting himself first. The pitcher-turned-coach was reportedly set to retire when Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo approached the 30-year Tucson resident about joining the team’s staff. “At this stage of my career, I got a little selfish and wanted to spend a little time at home,” he says. Strom began his career in 1972 as a player for the New York Mets, joining the Cleveland Indians the following year. He wrapped his pitching stint with the San Diego Padres from 1975 to 1977. He rejoined the big leagues 19 years later, in 1996, to coach with the Houston Astros. Strom also lent a hand to the Kansas City Royals from 2000 to 2001, returned to the Astros from 2014 to 2021, and then the D-backs this year.

Strom says he brings a different voice to the D-backs, which has “talented pitchers.” “I was hoping to bring my experience and things I’ve learned,” he adds. “I can’t say enough about the front office. They’ve been very good about the information I need for my job. It’s been a seamless transition from the Astros, who are analytically driven.” The D-backs have the same philosophy, Strom says. His eight years with the Astros were educational. “I learned a great deal,” he says. “By and large it was similar to the D-backs and basically made the transition easy.” D-backs starting pitcher and Scottsdale native Merrill Kelly agrees that the 73-year-old coach brings a different viewpoint and perspective to the team. “He comes from a different organization, and he was there for a while,” KelBrent Strom fist-bumps D-backs infielder Geraldo Perdomo. He just throws out suggestions. If you want to listen to him, that’s great. But he doesn’t try to take control of what you’re doing.” Fellow starting pitcher Zac Gallen says Strom has the credentials to make the D-backs’ pitching staff great. High Expectations Nancy Aton uses medical marijuana to help patients BY LAURA LATZKO Dr. Nancy Aton says medical marijuana is a catchall for improving health. Aton, who has been at Genesis Natural Medicine Center since 2012, has witnessed it improve conditions like epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, HIV or AIDS, chronic nausea, Crohn’s disease, severe menstrual cramps, endometriosis and PTSD. “It really helps with chronic pain and helps people sleep,” says Aton, a 38-year naturopathic medicine practitioner. “It can help with anxiety, which is a tie-in with chronic pain. A lot of people get anxious about their pain, and that just makes their pain worse because it tightens up muscles, decreases blood flow to the area that’s painful. So, I’m trying to stop that loop. THC specifically — one of the cannabinoids in marijuana — helps us not think about the pain. It takes away our focus on the pain, which can make pain worse.” Aton has been licensing patients for medical marijuana use since 2011. During the certification process, patients need to show that they are undergoing treatment, such as therapy or psychiatry for PTSD, to be eligible for a medical marijuana card. “People who come in, they have to show evidence that they have a condition that qualifies for medical marijuana,” Aton says. “The card is now good for two years.” Led by Dr. Michael Uzick, Genesis Natural Medicine Center offers nutritional, homeopathic and botanical treatments for disease prevention, pain management and overall wellness, including naturopathic oncology, nutritional IV therapies, acupuncture and massage therapy. Aton and other Genesis providers often work together to help patients. She says marijuana is one of the main botanicals she uses to treat patients with chronic pain issues or to ween them off opioids. Chronic pain can disrupt sleep. Edibles, she says, work great for this. “They last six to eight hours or longer if you take an edible that has CBD and THC at least an hour before you want to go to sleep,” she says. “A lot of people are so happy that they www.LovinLife.com

can now sleep throughout the night.” Aton often pairs medical marijuana with other botanicals for pain and/or anxiety management, including turmeric, boswellia, fish oil, vitamin D, valerian root, holy basil, ginger, lavender, lemon balm, passionflower or chamomile. Patients, such as those with rheumatoid arthritis, need to be on prescription medications. Aton pairs naturopathic treatments with these medications to best serve the patient. “Whatever gives the person the most relief, as long as it is prescribed properly, is what I think is best,” Aton says. Sometimes physical therapy is needed to help with mobility and pain management. She tries to take a holistic approach with all her patients. She encourages them to eat an anti-inflammatory, mostly plant-based diet with less sugar; more plants that grow above ground; less red meat; more chicken, fish and whole grains; more nuts and seeds; and more whole grains. She also emphasizes the importance of regular exercise. Aton advises people dealing with chronic pain — especially those with arthritis — to be active at times of the day when their pain is at a minimum. “A lot of people in pain, they wake up Marijuana...continues on page 8

with a lot of stiffness in the morning,” Aton says. “We want them to move when they can or try to start moving. Sometimes, that stiffness will go away. Swimming is a great exercise for chronic musculoskeletal pain because you’re getting rid of the gravity component. Doing aerobics in a pool can really help to strengthen the muscles without the increased pain because you aren’t stomping on the ground or a hard surface.” She says stretching and doing activities such as yoga can also help patients experiencing chronic pain. Habits like smoking cigarettes can increase pain, along with weight, too. “People who are obese have much more pain on their joints because all of that weight is pressing down on the joints,” Aton says. “So, it’s important to try to lose some weight, at least 15 to 20 pounds to start

"Her treatments are life changing!" Gloria P. of Tucson AZ worked overtime as a nurse to help people get through the pandemic. The consistent overuse on the computer caused Gloria's right hand and arm to experience numbness and burning pain. Her doctor diagnosed her with peripheral neuropathy. "My coworkers were telling me I would probably need surgery. Not only was I unable to sleep due to pain waking me up at night, I was no longer able to enjoy my favorite activity, tennis." The most common symptoms of peripheral neuropathy include numbness, tingling, and weakness in arms, hands, legs or feet, sudden sharp, stabbing, or shocking pain sensations, burning pain, loss of touch sensation, clumsiness and trouble using hands to pick up objects or fasten clothing, loss of balance and falling. Fortunately for Gloria, Acupuncturist Renée Stucklen has been reversing the effects of peripheral neuropathy for over 10 years - without invasive surgeries or medications that come with uncomfortable side effects. After a series of treatments, Gloria noticed that she was sleeping through the night and she was regaining sensation in her arm. "Having been off the tennis court for close to 6 months, I started saying YES to invitations to go out and play tennis again with my friends. It is life changing to have the freedom to get back to doing the things I love without fear of pain."

If you are living a life in constant pain and discomfort, or if you are struggling with the same symptoms as a result of Idiopathic Neuropathy or Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy, Acupuncturist Renée and the incredible team at Tucson Acupuncture and Wellness can help! The Bird is the Word Mission Garden shows off its feathered friends BY LAURA LATZKO Bird watching is seemingly a longlost art. However, Mission Garden allows guests to do just that while exploring its lush landscape of fruit trees and vegetable and grain crops. The second Thursday of the month, community outreach coordinator Kendall Kroesen and local birder and volunteer Linda Matson lead bird walks. Upcoming events are July 14, August 11 and September 8. The walks are designed for guests ranging from beginners to advanced. Bird watchers and researchers even travel to the garden to research nesting patterns. During the monthly bird walks, Kroesen and Matson share information on identifying different birds and their calls or songs. Kroesen says he gets a range of ques-

tions, especially about what the Mission Garden birds eat and where they nest. On one recent walk, Kroesen was asked how to tell the difference between male and female birds. “I explained that in a lot of cases, they look very similar and you can’t tell them apart,” Kroesen says. “Then, in many other species, they do have very distinct plumage and you can tell them apart.” Besides birds, walkers can see squirrels, cottontail rabbits or butterflies. A 30-year birder, Kroesen has been leading monthly bird walks at Mission Garden since around 2017. With the advent of COVID-19, Kroesen has witnessed a renewed interest in the hobby. This summer, Gambel’s quail, whitewinged doves, red-tailed hawks, Abert’s towhees and Western kingbirds have been prevalent. Since he started, Kroesen has eyed 90 species of birds, and he knows the best spots. “I know where some of them are nesting,” says Kroesen, who leads birding field trips for the Tucson Audubon Society. “I know the kinds of vegetation that some of them prefer, so I know where to find some of them. I also am familiar with the calls and songs of many of the birds, which helps to locate them.”

Longtime project

Kroesen became interested in birding while working at a sea turtle conservation project in Mexico. “I was around people who knew a lot about the wildlife there, including the birds,” he says. “We actually had a couple of sick birds that we found down there on the beach that we tried to nurse back to health. That got me interested, and when I got back to the United States, I stopped in at a store, bought binoculars and a field guide to birds of North America, and got started.” He started birding in Southern California before moving to Tucson in 1998, but he has also bird watched in Mexico and Ecuador. “I was always interested in places that had other dimensions to them, like some of the habitat restoration projects, some of the urban parks and washes in Tucson where you don’t have to drive very far and can still see a lot of birds,” Kroesen says. “Mission Garden fits in nicely because there are birds, but there are lot of other aspects to it — a deep agricultural history, maybe close to 5,000 years of agricultural history in the Tucson Basin, and all of the cultural diversity.” Kroesen says that while he started traditionally with binoculars and field guides, others get into birding through photography. “They take pictures of the birds they

see and later on go online,” Kroesen says. “There are pretty good field guides to birds online these days. They can look them up, or there’s Facebook pages where they show a picture and ask experts what they are seeing.” There are apps that birders can use to help them to identify birds, including iBird Pro, Sibley Birds, the Audubon Bird Guide and National Geographic Birds. Kroesen keeps records on the types and numbers of birds he sees and enters them into an online site called eBird, which is managed by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. “It is a convenient way for bird watchers to keep track of the birds that they’ve seen in any given place, in any given month or year or in their whole lifetime,” he says. “At the same time, it makes those observations available to scientists that study the distribution of the birds. … It’s one of the world’s biggest citizen science programs.” The various areas of Tucson allow for different birds to be witnessed.

The idea of Go Figure is to arrive at the figures given at the bottom and right-hand columns of the diagram by following the arithmetic signs in the order they are given (that is, from left to right and top to bottom). Use only the numbers below the diagram to complete its blank squares and use each of the nine numbers only once.

Place a number in the empty boxes in such a way that each row across, each column down and each small 9-box square contains all of the numbers from one to nine.

Each numbered row contains two clues and two answers. The two answers differ from each other by only one letter, which has already been inserted. For example, if you exchange the A from MASTER for an I, you get MISTER. Do not change the order of the letters.

SCRAMBLERS Unscramble the letters within each rectangle to form four ordinary words.

Then rearrange the boxed letters to form the mystery word, which will complete the gag!

Food & Drink

An Inferno of Flavors

Ken Foy owns and is executive chef of Dante’s Fire. (Noelle Haro Gomez/Contributor)

Diners can explore all-things delicious at Dante’s Fire BY VALERIE VINYARD When Dante’s Fire opened in May 2013, the restaurant catered to late-night diners who wanted eclectic, artfully prepared food; craft cocktails; and a well-chosen wine and beer list. “We wanted a restaurant that took care of the late-night diner,” says owner and executive chef Ken Foy, noting that the restaurant still provides a 20% discount on food after 11 p.m. to customers who work in the service industry. “Originally the concept was small plates, sharables. Everything was less than $14.” Nine years later, Dante’s Fire continues that late-night focus, but the menu has evolved into fewer small plates yet has managed to keep its flair. The kitchen is helmed by the boyish-looking 45-year-old Foy, who owns Dante’s with partners Mat Cable and Nick Heddings. Dante’s menu features ingredients that are difficult — at best — to find at other restaurants in town. The new menu, which debuted June 17, still is divided into fun categories. Starters are called “Limbo — On the Lighter Side,” where guests will find chilled cucumber and brie soup ($15). It’s enhanced with a fried crayfish, tomato oil and preserved Saffron shrimp is garlic roasted shrimp, squid ink linguine, sauce pomodoro and Parmesan foam.

tomatoes. The pan-seared foie gras ($19) is a decadent, melt-in-your-mouth dish. A generous chunk of foie gras is served with Oregon cherries, kirsch, orange conserve, French toast and pear. Though some of Dante’s ingredients are, shall we say, a bit haughtier than most late-night places, that doesn’t translate to a stuff y atmosphere. “The fact that you can have foie gras in flip-flops at 1:30 in the morning,” Foy says. “You can’t get that anywhere.” Under “Anger — with a Little Spice,” diners will find Thai curry shrimp ($26). The entrée has been offered since the restaurant opened and features six shrimp in a Thai curry coconut sauce with tomatoes, cucumbers, basil, jasmine rice and candied orange. “Our uniqueness is what we do best,” Foy says. Under “Greed — Richer, of Course,” there’s pappardelle diablo ($28), another dish that has been offered from the start. The hand-cut fresh pasta comes with lump crab, chorizo, tomatoes, roasted red pepper and Parmesan and is tossed with a vodka Cajun cream sauce. “Atonement — Be Satisfied” features a beef Wellington deconstructed ($29), which comes with truffled mashed pota-

toes, pastry, mushroom duxelles, bordelaise and béarnaise sauce. “We’re having a lot of fun with that,” Foy says. As if Dante’s menu wasn’t enough, a couple of ghost kitchens are in operation at the restaurant. There’s the Sexy Grilled Cheese and Salad Company, which was created shortly after the pandemic shut down traditional restaurants, and it continues at the restaurant. This concept is available at 11 a.m. Mondays to Saturdays and 4 p.m. Sundays, and it closes the same time as Dante’s. “During the pandemic, we had to get really casual, really fast,” Foy says. Sexy Grilled Cheese and Salad Company offers an assortment of five salads ($10-$14), nine grilled cheese sandwiches ($9-$14), five 16-ounce macaroni and cheese bowls ($9-$24), and a build-yourown grilled cheese (starting at $6). Soups ($9-$14) and fries ($5) round out the menu. “They’re fun stuff,” Foy says. “This is not grandpa’s grilled cheese.” Standouts include the obvious Sexy Grilled Cheese ($12), with cheddar, mozzarella, provolone, shaved Spanish chorizo and red onion jam on a toasted pretzel bread with Cajun garlic fries, and the lobster mac and cheese ($24), which is a classic mac with Maine lobster chunks and herbs. Specials also abound at Dante’s. Tuesdays feature half-price burgers, Wednesdays offer taco plates, Thursdays are halfpriced bottles of wine, and Sundays feature all-day happy hour. Happy hour is 4 to 6 p.m. daily. Dis-

counts include $1.50 off draft beers, $1 off bottled beer, $2 off wine by the glass, and $1 off signature cocktails. Food specials include a menu that features seven items for $7 each. Before it transformed into Dante’s Fire, the 3,052-square-foot space previously housed Nonie and Rio Cafe. Today, Dante’s is surrounded on both sides of Grant Road by a handful of other restaurants, including Postino, Snooze an A.M. Eatery, Culinary Dropout and LemonShark Poke. Jeannie Snyder, a 27-year-old bartender at a nearby restaurant, enjoys the variety of Grant Road restaurants. She says she especially appreciates Tucson restaurants like Dante’s Fire that stay open late. “Since the pandemic, most restaurants close early or at the latest by 9,” Snyder says. “If you don’t want to settle for Denny’s or IHOP, Dante’s is a great option.” She’s a fan of the Stolen Burger ($17), which comes with wild mushrooms, muenster cheese and garlic herb mayonnaise on a house-made butter bun and is served with Cajun garlic fries. “It has a lot of great toppings and is a great price for what you get,” she says. “I like the combination of unusual stuff and more traditional foods that Dante’s has. It caters to any mood you’re in.”

The Healthy Geezer

Stomach discomfort Heat, exercise and your heart can be serious Ask the Expert

BY FRED CICETTI

BY TUCSON MEDICAL CENTER Summers here in Tucson can be brutal. And while you might want to escape to air conditioning all the time, being inside 24/7 isn’t always possible. Whether you’re in tip-top condition and anxious to get out and keep up with your training routine or a regular Joe or Josephine who just wants to walk their dog, Sabine Harrington, registered clinical exercise physiologist, explains just why it’s important to understand how our body responds to heat so we can respond safely. “Our bodies are amazing,” Harrington says. “When faced with high temperatures, the human body adapts. The volume of blood increases and diverts more blood to skin surface to dissipate heat via convection. We also sweat more in the hopes that this water will evaporate, taking excess heat with it. “The main goal is homeostasis — keeping your core temperature from increasing too much.” How effective your body is at acclimatizing to heat is dependent on a host of factors, and if your body is unable to acclimatize, you risk heat stroke and heat exhaustion. “Heat stress can be adaptive, but heat exhaustion and heat stroke are dangerous territory, especially in our climate. Learn the signs at https://bit.ly/TMCHeat.

Heat as part of the workout

Depending on your goals (training or surviving the summer), you can use heat as an adaptive “acute stress” to complement your traditional workouts or at least make you more comfortable with daily heat. Think of it as a neurovascular workout to keep the body sharp. The intricate communication between the nervous and cardiovascular systems enables us to thermoregulate, and this is good practice for our bodies. It’s important to remember that working out in the heat will raise your heart rate proportionately much more than working out at the same intensity in cooler temps. For example, a brisk walk on a June morning maybe just as strenuous as a light jog in March on your heart. Pay attention to how you’re feeling, your heart rate, and your hydration levels.

Heat and heart conditions

Those with cardiovascular challenges (coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, etc.) are at increased risk of overheating because the heart and vascular system have increased work to do. If the heart muscle itself can’t do as much work, the ability to get rid of heat is limited and the risks associated with heat are increased. In addition to the physiological constraints of heart-related conditions, many common medications also impact the body’s ability to respond to heat, including those used for heart-related conditions. Beta blockers interfere with dilation of the skin blood vessels, diuretics remove water from the body, calcium channel blockers reduce the heart’s work capacity and ACE inhibitors interfere with fluid balance. “If you have a known heart condition, you may need to be more vigilant about hot weather. Support your body with proper fluids and electrolytes and find ways to keep your core temp down during the day,” Harrington says. All should follow these guidelines, heart condition or not: • Avoid the sun at the hottest time of the day — from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Unless you are specifically conditioning yourself for an outdoor athletic event or occupation, in which case, do it gradually.) • Drink plenty of water. At least eight glasses of water, but more if you’re being active. • Wear light, loose-fitting clothes. • Enjoy cool foods, salads and fruit, which have a high water content as well as being nutritionally dense. • Avoid drinking alcohol, as it can dehydrate you. • Talk with your primary care provider if you’re starting a new exercise regime. If you don’t have a primary care provider, you can find one at tmcaz.com. Sabine Harrington works with patients in TMC’s cardiac rehab facility. She has a Master of Science degree in physiological sciences from the UA and a Bachelor of Arts degree in paleobiology from the University of Pennsylvania. She is a registered clinical exercise physiologist with the American College of Sports Medicine and a movement instructor with 10 years’ experience.

Q

I get a lot of stomachaches. Do you have any tips to prevent them?

A

If you are having recurring abdominal pain, you should see a doctor immediately. This kind of discomfort can be a symptom of a serious ailment. However, if you’re talking about the kind of stomachaches we all get occasionally, there are some things you can do to prevent them: • Eat small meals more frequently. • Make sure that your meals are well balanced and high in fiber. • Drink plenty of water each day. • Exercise regularly. • Limit foods that produce gas. The following are gas-generating foods: • Legumes, especially dried beans and peas, baked beans, soy beans and lima beans. • Dairy products such as milk, ice cream and cheese. • Vegetables such as cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, cucumbers, sauerkraut, kohlrabi, asparagus, potatoes, rutabaga, turnips, radishes and onions. • Fruits such as prunes, apricots, apples, raisins and bananas. • Foods containing wheat, such as cereals, breads and pastries. • Fatty foods such as fried chicken and anything in cream sauces and gravies. • Any carbonated beverage. Abdominal pain is often caused by overeating. Sometimes an infection is responsible. But pain may be a symptom of something that requires emergency treatment; there are quite a few organs in your abdominal area. The location of the pain is informative to your doctor. Pain near your navel can be a sign of appendicitis or something wrong in your

small intestine. Stomach problems are found in the upper middle section of the abdomen. Persistent pain in this area may also signal a problem with your gallbladder, pancreas or the upper part of your small intestine. It’s unusual to feel pain in the upper left abdomen. Pain in this area may be caused by a problem in the colon, stomach, spleen or pancreas. Intense pain in the upper right abdomen is often related to inflammation of the gallbladder. Pain in the lower middle abdomen may be caused by the colon. Women with pelvic inflammatory disease or a urinary tract infection may experience pain in this area. The lower right abdomen is where inflammation of the colon may cause pain. Appendicitis pain may also spread to this region. If you feel pain in the lower left abdomen, you usually have a problem at the end of the colon. Don’t rely on self-diagnosis based upon these pain guidelines. Abdominal pain has a way of moving around. For example, gallbladder pain can move to your right shoulder. And abdominal pain can be caused by the lungs and heart. Or it may be caused by muscle strain. The following are some of the danger signs associated with abdominal pain. If you experience any of the following, get immediate medical attention: • Sudden and sharp pain. • Pain that radiates to your chest, neck or shoulder. • Severe, recurrent or persistent pain. • Pain that worsens. • Vomiting blood. • Blood in your stool. • A swollen and tender abdomen. • Shortness of breath. • Dizziness. • High fever.

When Marcy and Lyle were young, they didn’t think about their retirement. But by the time they had babies graduating from high school and going off to college, they had plans for their “golden years.” They couldn’t wait to sit back and relax and enjoy the fruits of their labor. But they couldn’t plan for everything. Unexpected events, unavoidable tragedies, and opportunities that ended up involving more risk than they did reward left Marcy and Lyle repeatedly dipping into their retirement funds until they were far short of their goal. In fact, they were looking at spending their golden years on an extremely tight budget. Luckily, their good friend Jim was retiring early and dropped

by to share his excitement. And in doing so, he told them exactly what they needed to hear. There was a solution: a reverse mortgage from Sun American Mortgage. The answer had been right in front of them all along. They just hadn’t known to turn to their own home equity for a solution to their financial troubles. With their new reverse mortgage line of credit, Marcy and Lyle can take money in and out of their home without recourse. They can make payments on their reverse mortgage, but they don’t need to. No monthly mortgage payment is actually required (Property tax payments, HOA dues and Homeowners insurance payments are still required). The reverse mortgage provides them with all the

options and flexibility that they needed – right when they needed it most.
