Abrazo Health launches residency programs BY CHRISTINA FUOCO-KARASINSKI

Abrazo Health recently launched two new graduate medical education programs, its first class of internal medicine and general surgery residents starting rotations at Abrazo Arrowhead Campus in Glendale. Abrazo Arrowhead Campus is the primary clinical site for the new residencies, which will add to the community’s ability to attract and retain future physicians. “Our program offers a collaborative environment that will serve as the foundation for building clinical experience and patient advocacy,” Loli said. “Through our local physician leadership, Abrazo provides direction over the curriculum and residents’ hands-on training to suit our community’s needs and ensure quality and patient safety standards are met.” Residents will have real-world learning opportunities with cardiac and vascular specialists at Abrazo Arizona Heart Hospital, emergency and trauma training at the Level I Trauma Center at Abrazo West, and with the numerous disciplines offered at Abrazo Arrowhead. “I’m thankful for the leadership of our

designated institutional officer, Dr. Akil Loli, as well as the program directors and the rest of the faculty of the graduate medical education program,” said Abrazo Arrowhead Campus CEO Jeff Patterson. “Through their dedication to teaching and developing the next generation of physicians, we were able to attract a tremendously talented group of physicians in our first year. I believe the educational experience our residents will receive through Abrazo Community Health Network will continue to draw gifted residents and augment the care provided in our facilities.” Abrazo has three medical residency programs. Abrazo Central Campus in Phoenix began its family medicine residency

program in 1978, and many of those physicians continue to practice in the Valley. The programs are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. Residencies play an important role in addressing the need for more physicians in the community, according to Abrazo Health Chief Medical Officer Dr. William Ellert. “It’s a very important part of a young physician’s development, and it’s well-documented that residents tend to develop roots in communities where they train. We are committed to providing effective learning opportunities for our residents. It’s an investment in the future of health care in Arizona,” Ellert said.

Are you sick and tired of being sick and tired? BY SUMMIT MEDICAL WEIGHT LOSS AND WELLNESS

With a growing number of Baby Boomers, anti-aging medicine has become a popular health field. Within this field, one of the fastest-growing solutions is hormone replacement therapy (HRT). You’ve probably heard people talking about it, read about it on the internet, or maybe patients have asked you about it. But you might be asking yourself, what exactly is HRT and why has it become so popular?

What is hormone replacement therapy? HRT is a natural solution to balancing hormone levels within the body. Many forms of HRT are bioidentical, meaning they mimic the hormones that are already produced in the body, and they gradually increase these levels. Generally, HRT is not a synthetic solution, but rather a safe way to optimize hormones and relieve the patient’s common aging symptoms. Initially, HRT was used as an approach to treat menopause symptoms. However, due to the wide range of health benefits and popularity in the anti-aging field, this solution has extended itself to be a common approach for resolving men’s symptoms as well.

How is hormone replacement therapy administered? There are many forms of HRT available to patients, including injectables, pellets, creams, gels, patches and oral medication. Along with different forms of HRT, there is a wide range of medications that can be used in an HRT program like testosterone, estrogen, progesterone, anastrozole and human chorionic gonadotropin. Generally, testosterone is at the core of HRT because of the key role it plays in regulating sex drive, metabolism, sleep patterns, cognition, and other functions in the body. However, complementary medications like anastrozole or estrogen can be helpful when it comes to maintaining specific hormone levels within the body, which in turn re-

duces the likelihood of side effects.

Who can benefit from HRT? A hormone imbalance can happen to anyone and it can be caused by issues like aging, increased stress, poor health habits and endocrine problems. Usually, females are a likely candidate for HRT when they are close to menopause, during, or even post-menopausal. Females will generally complain of vaginal dryness, low sex drive, hot flashes, night sweats, weight gain, and other uncomfortable symptoms that are indicative of a hormone imbalance. Males, on the other hand, can become a candidate for HRT much sooner than females and do not have to necessarily reach andropause before experiencing aging symptoms. Men will generally complain of low sex drive, muscle loss, mental fog, weight gain and daily fatigue. To determine if someone can benefit from HRT, usually a physician will order a blood draw, evaluate the lab results, and have an informative consultation to determine the best course of action.

What are the benefits of HRT? There are many health benefits to starting an HRT program. In general, patients experience benefits such as more energy, muscle growth, hot flash relief, heightened focus and increased sex drive. Along with these health benefits, studies have also shown that HRT can improve patients’ digestion system, lessen their risk of stroke or other heart complications, and reduce the likelihood of conditions such as osteoporosis or bone decomposition.

Are there solutions beyond HRT? Although HRT is the widely accepted approach to relieving aging symptoms, there are other medications that have become increasingly popular in the anti-aging field—many of these can be used alongside a traditional HRT program. One example is peptides. Some peptides stimulate human growth hormone (HGH), which has a crucial role in muscle growth, metabolism, fluid regulation, and weight management.

Other peptides can assist with collagen production or gastrointestinal health. Along with peptides, vitamin and amino acid blends such as B12 or MIC have become popular because they can assist with weight management while also providing that extra energy boost that most older adults need to function throughout the day. Whether HRT medications are used alone or combined with anti-aging upgrades like peptides or injectable vitamins, this solution can help men and women reclaim their health and feel younger again. Hormone imbalances can drastically impact patients’ lives: • 1 in 4 men older than 30 have low testosterone • 80% of women will experience a hormone imbalance in their lifetime • Testosterone prescriptions have tripled in the last decade • Left untreated, a hormone imbalance can severely impact your long-term health and well-being. Yet the majority of cases are undiagnosed or ignored.

Summit Medical Weight Loss and Wellness is now offering unique personalized men’s and women’s programs which include: • Three customized “core” prescriptions to relieve common aging symptoms and balance your hormones • “Pick 3” supplements from selected from seven proprietary blends to fit your specific health goals • Additional anti-aging prescription upgrades such as amino-acid blends and peptide formularies • All ancillaries and step-by-step instruction guides for you to self-administer at your own convenience after getting started with lab work and a consult with one of our knowledgeable doctors. Active duty members and their spouses who are expecting a baby, or new mothers assigned to an Air Force installation, are encouraged to contact the Airman & Family Readiness Center to sign up for a Bundles for Babies/ Kids Ride Safe class. Parents can receive a free car seat and learn about proper installation in their vehicle, parenting skills and finances; meet other expectant parents; and receive a bundle of supplies. That includes a large, canvas tote bag with AFAS logo, thermal receiving blanket, hooded towel and washcloth, white knit crib sheet, printed knit crib sheet, three-pack sleep-n-play, five-pack onesies, two pairs of booties, two bibs and three burp cloths. Classes are open to all ranks and are not limited to a first pregnancy. The transition from singlehood to married life is tough, and marrying a military member can pose its own unique challenges. Heart Link is a program designed to familiarize civilian spouses with the military and alleviate some of these issues.

From military protocol to traditions and lingo, Heart Link teaches civilian spouses what their military counterparts deal with daily. Spouses are introduced to the military community. They have an important role to play: keeping up the home front while their spouses are deployed and being a source of support for the airmen. Heart Link, which is geared toward newlyweds, is designed to help connect military members with their spouses. By integrating spouses into the military, it helps to enhance mission readiness. If you have ever lost a tooth, you might have more than just a gap between your teeth. If a lost tooth is not replaced, the bone in the jaw that supported the lost tooth starts to deteriorate. That’s because when you chew your food, there’s no more stimulation to the bone from the missing tooth’s chewing action. Over time, the gaps in your mouth change as the surrounding teeth shift into the empty space, causing your bite alignment to shift with it. When this happens, missing teeth can not only affect how you look but can cause problems when you chew and even when you speak. What can you do to prevent this from happening to your smile? You want something to take that missing tooth’s place, and one of the best options available today is a dental implant. Acting like a tooth, implants stimulate your jawbone from the pressure they exert when you chew by acting as the base of a regular tooth. Because of this,

they keep the jaw healthy and strong and your bite alignment intact. You can have a single implant done or multiple implants to replace as many teeth as you need. The implant itself is a titanium post used to act like a tooth root. Once it is surgically placed into the jawbone under the gumline, it can hold a tooth replacement (or a dental bridge). Once the implant fuses to your jawbone it is sturdy and durable. It won’t shift in the mouth, so you can speak and chew without worry. A dental implant can be used to secure dentures, bridges, and crowns to replace your teeth to help them feel natural in the mouth. Depending on the number of teeth that need to be replaced, the overall process can take a few weeks or months to achieve final completion. To learn more about dental implants and how they can replace missing teeth, contact our team at Burns Dentistry. Call now to schedule your free consultation at 623-207-1749.

Benevilla Life Enrichment Day Programs offer meaningful and purposeful activities to members each and every day. (Photo courtesy Benevilla)

BY BENEVILLA

For every person enrolled in a Benevilla program, two people get their lives back: the individual and the caregiver. More than 130 million American have chronic conditions that require care, according to the National Center on Aging. Many times, caregivers must balance that attention with a full schedule of other life activities, such as work outside the home, caring for children and other family members, and other responsibilities. Benevilla can help support loved ones caring for a family member with several adult day programs. Benevilla Life Enrichment Day Programs offer essential physical, cognitive and social activities for older adults that help them remain independent, while also giving caregivers much-needed relief and control of their day. These programs include: • Lucy Anne’s Place: For those with early to moderate stages of Alzheimer’s and other dementias. Lucy Anne’s Place also offers intergenera-

tional opportunities. • Mary’s Place: For those experiencing moderate to advanced Alzheimer’s and other dementias. • West Valley: For a variety of needs, including stroke survivors and older adults with dementia or intellectual disabilities. • Helping Partners: For adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. • Restorative: For stroke survivors, those injured in a fall, or those with Parkinson’s. This program includes restorative therapy. Family caregivers also benefit from these programs, which help reduce anxiety and stress and decrease depression symptoms. Researchers find the increased well-being of a caregiver also affects the person for whom he or she is caring, helping to boost positive behavior in dementia patients. For more information for or take a tour of Benevilla programs, call 623-584-4999 or visit benevilla.org.

Patients: CBD truly helps with pain Summer 2019

Health & Wellness

BY GARY S. MILLER Contributing Writer

There will never be a cure for pain and discomfort. Patients will either have to live with it or manage it. Prescription opioids have been the go-to choice, especially for constant or throbbing pain. However, they are highly addictive, have awful side effects and can be very deadly. Enter CBD. Thousands of people have found CBD to truly help with little or no side effects. Patients can never overdose from CBD. Folks are afraid to try CBD because they think it will get them “stoned.” That is absolutely not the case as there is no THC in most CBD products. THC is the psychoactive chemical compound of the cannabis/hemp plant that gets you high, but you can’t get high from something that’s not in there. CBD can be taken orally or inhaled, for those who like to smoke. It is also applied topically to afflicted areas where you have specific pain, such as

arthritic hands, back and knees. CBD should be taken orally and applied on the source of the pain if the threshold is a seven or higher. The directions are varied, as everyone’s endocrine system and physiology is different. CBD is so new in the marketplace that prescribers experiment to figure out what works. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, strengthening exercises are safe and effective for men and women of all ages, including seniors. The CDC also notes men and women with heart disease or arthritis may benefit the most from exercise regimens that include lifting weights several times per week. A strength-training program at Tufts University enlisted older men and women with moderate to severe knee osteoarthritis. The program lasted 16 weeks, and by the end of those 16 weeks, participants reported that their pain had decreased by an average of 43% while also decreasing the disability caused by their conditions. In addition to the benefits uncovered in the Tufts program, strength training can benefit older men and women by improving balance and flexibility, which can decrease their likelihood of falling and the severity of those falls if they do slip.

My experience at Midwestern University BY KELSEY EATON

Fourth-Year Medical Student and Anatomy Teaching Assistant Midwestern University

Medical students learn a lot about the intangible aspects of medicine. We read tens of thousands of pages on the human body and discuss its mechanisms, physics, chemistry and physiology. Dissecting cadavers in the anatomy lab gave that learning a different approach. This was health and illness on a palpable level. There is no comparison to being able to meticulously study the human body, deciphering layers of tissue, entanglement of vessels and nerves, and perfectly nestled organs. This physical interaction with the complexity we were learning made teaching anatomy a truly special experience. It was an opportunity to help others develop critical thinking and the ability to apply their knowledge while enhancing my own. Many of us remember the first incision we make. It’s a delicate skill necessary for so many of our careers, but one that fills us with

trepidation. One of the many gifts that the donated bodies (body donors) provide is allowing us to be ready. We learn from their bodies’ stories, so that we can help our future patients continue their own stories.” To learn more about donating your body to medical education, contact Midwestern University Body Donation Program at 623-806-7990 or visit midwestern.edu/bodydonation. Fascinating facts about the human cardiovascular system

The cardiovascular system is an amazing component of the human body. (Submitted graphic)

BY HEALTH & WELLNESS STAFF

The human heart and the miles of blood vessels that snake through the body are a wonder to behold. Made up of three independent components, the cardiovascular system functions best when these three components, which include the heart, lungs and portal vessels, work cohesively. Each day 2,000 gallons of blood travel through the blood vessels to provide oxygenated blood to the body and remove waste materials, including carbon dioxide. That’s a lot of traveling. In fact, according to LiveScience, if you were to lay out all of the arteries, capillaries and veins in one adult from end-to-end, they would stretch roughly 60,000 miles, which means that our blood vessels could wrap around the Earth 2.5 times. The human cardiovascular system is nothing short of fascinating, and the following are some even more remarkable facts about this wonder of nature, courtesy of Mercola, PBS, CPR-certified medical training group, and LiveScience. • The heart beats around 2.5 billion times in the average person’s lifetime. • Red blood cells have to move in a single-file line to fit through the miniscule capillaries in the body. • When the body is at rest, it takes about 6 seconds for the blood to go from the

heart to the lungs and back. • A woman’s heart typically beats faster than a man’s heart, at a rate of 78 times per minute (men’s hearts beat 70 times per minute). • The corneas in a person’s eyes are the only bodily cells that do not receive a blood supply. • The thumping sound of the heart is made by the four valves of the heart closing. • If a heart has an adequate supply of oxygen, it can beat even when separated from the body, thanks to its own electrical impulse. • Ancient Egyptians believed the heart, rather than the brain, was the source of emotion, wisdom and memory. • Unlike other cells, red blood cells do not contain nuclei so they have room to carry oxygen. However, this absence is why they cannot divide or synthesize new cell components. • Healthy bone marrow will constantly manufacture new red blood cells. • Within a tiny droplet of blood, there are about 5 million red blood cells. • The right ventricle is responsible for moving blood to the lungs, where it will receive fresh oxygen and nutrients. The left atrium and left ventricle receive this oxygenated blood back from the lungs. • The heart begins beating four weeks after conception.

Chocolate historically more than just food BY HEALTH & WELLNESS STAFF

Many cannot resist chocolate, that beloved creamy, sweet confection derived from cocoa beans, milk and sugar. All over the world people love to indulge in chocolate, especially come Valentine’s Day. According to data from Leatherhead Food Research, Switzerland consumes more chocolate per capita than any country in the world. Ireland, the United Kingdom, Austria and Belgium round out the top five. Despite its apparent popularity in Europe, chocolate was first popularized among the Olmecs of Mexico, who used the cocoa beans more than 3,500 years ago. However, it wasn’t until the last 200 years that chocolate turned into the sweet treat that is known and loved today. Aztecs believed cocoa had aphrodisiac properties, and chocolate contains a chemical called phenylethylamine, which is released naturally in the body when a person falls in love. The aroma of chocolate can induce relaxation, and chocolate also contains dopamine, a

natural painkiller. While chocolate is now used primarily as a food, over the years it has had many other uses — some of which are quite unique. Here are some of the many ways people have used chocolate throughout history. • Money: The Mayans once used cocoa beans as a form of currency, as did the Aztecs. In this instance, money actually did grow on trees. • Dental health: Arman Sadeghpour, a researcher at Tulane University, says an extract of cocoa powder could be an effective alternative to using fluoride. Chocolate-enhanced toothpaste may be the next big thing. • Fuel: Chocolate has been used to feed bacteria that produce hydrogen, which can be used as a clean power source. • Medicine: Chocolate is full of antioxidants, which serve all sorts of disease-fighting benefits in the body. Dark chocolate provides the greatest number of health benefits, as it contains flavonols, which stimulate the brain and support the circulatory system. • Fashion: Designers and chocolatiers

worldwide collaborate to make sweet outfits at Le Salon du Chocolat’s fashion shows. • Special effects: Before the days of computer-simulated special effects, moviemakers had to employ other methods to produce realistic results. Legend has it that Bosco brand chocolate syrup was used as blood in the famed shower scene in the classic horror movie “Psycho.” Bosco was used because it showed up great in black and white. • Skin care: Cocoa butter, a component of chocolate, has long been used to moisturize and soothe dry skin. Many spas now incorporate organic chocolate into their healing and beauty therapies. • Perfume: Chocolate produces more than 400 distinct smells and has been used to make perfume more fragrant. • Mood enhancement: Chocolate may help to improve mood, as it is a mild stimulant and can affect serotonin levels, which govern those feel-good feelings, in the brain. • Postage: In 2013, Belgium’s post of-

fice sold limited-edition stamps that were varnished with 40 % of a cocoa product. The stamps smelled and tasted like chocolate. Chocolate has been tempting taste buds for thousands of years. It’s also been used in some very unique ways, even if, come Valentine’s Day, the majority of people would be content just to eat it.

Swimming, the perfect way to add variety to your workout BY GLENDALE COMMUNITY COLLEGE

There are the four pillars of good health that everyone should follow: variety, balance, adequacy and moderation. People are generally adept in one or two of the pillars, but could use some improvement in the others. Variety is something we could all get better at when it comes to our health and wellness. To successfully achieve variety, we must first take a look at what we do on a regular basis. When it comes to exercise and fitness, we need to consider our goto workout. To achieve variety, we should do what competitive athletes do—cross train. This requires engaging in an activity that takes the strain off the joints that we typically use. When we cross train, we enhance our neuromuscular and cardiorespiratory systems plus we reduce the risk of boredom and injuries stemming from overuse. Most people who regularly exercise tend to stay in their comfort zone and avoid branching into new activities. However, it is very important for our

brain, nervous system and muscles to be continuously challenged in new and invigorating ways. When was the last time you tried swimming for exercise? Swimming is an excellent way to cross-train, especially when you consider these benefits: • Reduced strain in joints • Improved lung function • Healthier heart • Improved flexibility • Stress reduction • Improved mental focus And if swimming is done outdoors in the sunshine there is the added benefit of vitamin D to help our mood and bone health. Swimming can be like medicine for many chronic health issues such as hypertension, heart disease, pulmonary disease, arthritis, obesity, diabetes, anxiety, depression and some cancers. Glendale Community College offers swimming and aqua fitness classes each semester, along with lap swim as part of the Fitness Center membership. Check out http://bit.ly/2JDNFQ1for more information.

Adrenal fatigue can be easily treated

20

Health & Wellness

BY DR. ELLIE WRIGHT, NMD

Adrenal fatigue is associated with insomnia, fatigue, brain fog, breathing and sinus issues, decreased libido, feeling dizzy when standing. To diagnose this, a Ragland test is done: comparing the blood pressure when standing and when lying down. It is normal for blood pressure to go up with standing however, when it goes down with standing it could be an additional sign for adrenal fatigue. Chronic stress accumulates in the body and promotes the over

secretion of cortisol and catecholamines (epinephrine and norepinephrine), which in turn increases insulin levels. What might help with adrenal fatigue? Acupuncture, glandulars, adrenal formulations including herbs and nutrients and low-intensity exercise. Adrenal glandular supplements are sometimes used to replenish the depleted adrenal glands (burnout). Another support is the amino acid N-acetyl-l-tyrosine to support stress. The B vitamins are well known as the cofactors in balanc-

ing the stress hormones especially B1 (thiamine), B6 (P-5-P), B2 (riboflavin) and B5 (pantothenic acid). Sometimes, the right synergistic combination of all these bring out the best results. Some botanicals called adaptogens help balance the adrenals such as: Eleutherococcus senticosus (Eleuthero), Panax quinquefolius (American ginseng), Ashwagandha (Indian ginseng or Withania), Rhodiola rosea (rose root), and Glycyrrhiza glabra (licorice root). Ginseng is been used for centuries

How to improve your flexibility no matter your age BY HEALTH & WELLNESS STAFF

Many men and women become less flexible as they get older. That loss of flexibility can make performing everyday tasks more difficult while also increasing the risk of injury when work-

ing out. Fortunately, there are many steps men and women can take to improve their flexibility. • Embrace dynamic stretching before a workout. Static stretching was once the rage, but research has indicated that

17505 N. 79th Ave Glendale, AZ 85308 623-734-2473 magnoliapersonalizedmedicine.com

static stretching is not as beneficial as people once thought. Static stretching is a blanket term used to describe several techniques that stretch muscles while a body is at rest. When a person is performing a static stretch, he or she gradually lengthens the muscle until it reaches an elongated position, which is then held for 30 seconds or more. But recent research has indicated that static stretching is not as effective before a workout as dynamic stretching, which are stretching exercises done while a body is moving. Push-ups, squats and lunges are just a few examples of dynamic stretching techniques, and these exercises can warm up your body and prepare it for the workout to come. • Reconfigure your workout. When you want to improve flexibility, it’s beneficial to examine your existing workout routine. Are you lifting as much weight as possible during your strength training workout but don’t really know why? If building muscle mass is not your goal, you can probably improve your flexibility by lifting less weight. Lifting less weight can be a great way to tone your muscles, and you won’t be sacrificing the benefits associated with strength training. • Drink water. Properly hydrated muscles are more capable of responding to flexibility training than poorly hydrated muscles. Make an effort to drink more water throughout the day, and bring your own water with you to the gym so you can stay hydrated during your workouts. • Find ways to unwind. Your workout may not be the culprit behind your in-

flexibility. Stress can cause muscles to tighten, and it also increases your risk for a host of ailments, including heart disease and stroke. If your workout routine is already one that promotes flexibility but you are still dealing with tightness, then you might be falling victim to stress. If that’s the case, find time to alleviate that stress throughout the day, whether it’s taking a relaxing walk during your lunch break or embracing yoga at the end of a long day. • Perform static stretches at the end of your workout. Static stretches may be ineffective and contribute to injury at the beginning of workout, but that does not mean they can’t help you improve flexibility once your workout is complete. Static stretches at the end of a workout can help you lengthen muscles that might have lost some of their flexibility during strength training. Men and women who can’t seem to improve their flexibility no matter what they do may benefit from working with a professional trainer or discussing their concerns with their physicians.

5-star Yelp review from Tomi E.

This school is amazing! They have the best instructors who put their all into teaching you everything you need to start your career. Brittany was my instructor and I couldn’t say thank you enough to her for everything she has done for me. Bianca is the front-office coordinator and just the sweetest woman you will ever meet. She helped me land my job along with Brittany, those two are wonderful at what they do! They gave me the resources to find a job and I landed one immediately! The president of the school Lisa is a person I don’t have enough space to type about. She made my whole schooling easy. She did things for me that no other school would do! I can’t thank everyone there enough! They made my dreams come true! I love ASDA!

Julie Brick This amazing school literally changed my life. From the instructors to the president, to the outlook coordinator, they all help you and are there for you throughout this process. Whatever you need,

even if it is extra help with a particular study matter, they are there for you. They also assist with job placement. If it wasn’t for this school, I wouldn’t have the opportunity that I have now. Do not hesitate when looking for a dental pro-

Brittney Carrillo I really want to express my experience about when I attended Arizo-

na School of Dental Assisting. It was life-changing for me. Years ago, I was in a place in my life I knew was not the ideal way for how I wanted to spend the rest of my life. So, I made the decision to attend this school. Lisa, the president of the school, was my biggest support system, motivating me to believe in myself. The class was small and I felt I had more of a oneon-one experience with the instructor. Anytime I felt the need to talk to Lisa, she was there for me. I now have so many opportunities that have opened up for me because I made the best decision for me and my family.
