An economic observer might give Goodyear an AA rating for July. After Amazon signed a $20 million deal to purchase 90 acres at Indian School Road and Cotton Lane, discount grocery store chain Aldi announced it will open a Goodyear store by year’s end. Both are great news for shoppers (whether online or in person)—and job seekers. At a time of record unemployment in Arizona, the two companies will bring scores of jobs to Goodyear. And more is coming: In addition to the store at Estrella Parkway and Roosevelt Street, “Aldi is also building a distribution center and regional office” in Goodyear, according to Tammy Vo, a city spokeswoman. “Construction has not begun, and that portion of the project is still a ways out,” she added. Amazon did not immediately respond to a question about what it will do with the sprawling property it purchased in the

In state District 4, which includes Buckeye and Goodyear, incumbents Geraldine “Gerae” Peten and Charlene Fernandez were the only two Democrats to file for the two House of Representatives seats. Joel John was the only Republican to make the Aug. 4 primary ballot for Legislative District 4 House of Representatives. For the District 4 Senate seat, incumbent Lisa Otondo of Yuma was the lone Democrat to file and Travis Angry of Goodyear the lone Republican to file. The West Valley View emailed questions

On top of that, Goodyear City Council recently approved 10 new hires for engineers and inspectors. “At a time when many municipalities are burdened with financial strains due to COVID-19, our city is experiencing unprecedented growth and a very positive financial position, despite the pandemic,” Goodyear Mayor Georgia Lord said. She said the city is booming, from warehouses to health care and restaurants. “We have many exciting developments—from Fairlife now recruiting their local workforce to the construction of the Estrella Women’s Health Center, an Aldi store and the opening of a Culver’s restaurant—we have a great diversity of businesses that have selected our city to put down roots. We have a community that is very appealing to many different types of businesses and we are thrilled about it.” While the COVID-19 pandemic has led to tens of thousands of layoffs in the state, Goodyear continues to grow its base of workers. “Our goal is to bring jobs into this city and make Goodyear one of the biggest employment bases in the Valley,” Lord said. She called Goodyear’s rapid growth during the pandemic “mind boggling.” Indeed, at a recent Goodyear City Council meeting, Lauri Wingenroth, the city’s budget and research manag-
er, said the city’s sales tax revenues for May were “significantly higher” than for May 2019. “The revenues are surprising,” she added.
More to come The city’s sales tax and other revenues should have an even larger base by early next year. According to commercial real estate tracking site Vizzda.com, Amazon acquired 90 acres from Rados Properties for $19.8 million July 1. The Goodyear Aldi at 845 N. Estrella Parkway is scheduled to open Dec. 20. On Nov. 20, Aldi plans to open a store in Chandler as well as in Peoria, with a Gilbert store in December. “We’re excited to open the first four Aldi stores in Arizona and have plans to expand our presence in the state in the years ahead. We do not have information to share about opening a warehouse in Arizona at this time. We will share updates about our growth plans as we have them,” said Tom Cindel, an Aldi regional director of operations. Launched in Germany, Aldi has more than 2,000 stores in the U.S. Newcomers who walk into an Aldi quickly realize it’s not a typical grocery store—a quarter is required to “rent” a shopping cart (the quarter is refunded when the cart is returned). And, according to the Aldi website, “Shoppers will find that more than 90% of the products in our stores are Aldi exclusive brands.” Aldi veterans know to BYOB (bring your own bag)—as Aldi encourages reusable bags by charging for shopping bags.

Goodyear adds funds, jobs BY ALLEN AWFE

On July 13, the Goodyear City Council held a regular meeting where an addition to the city’s 2021 fiscal year budget was unanimously approved. The $1.9 million budget addition is a transfer from Goodyear’s special contingency fund to the city’s general fund. According to agenda material, 1,400 residential building permits contributed $1.2 million in development support. “This ($1.2 million) will fund salaries, benefits and associated costs for 10 new positions,” Finance Director Doug Sandstrom said. The 10 full-time positions include one code compliance officer, one building inspector planner, three construction inspectors, one plans examiner, one civil engineer and two technicians. An additional $17,000 will go toward personal protective equipment. The budget addition also includes $90,000 for activities such as Ballet Under the Stars and community activities like Goodyear Rocks, with another $316,000 for employee and technology safety. This includes cyber security, safety restraints for the Goodyear Police Department, and the replacement and testing of several turnouts. According to Finance Manager of Budget and Research Lauri Wingenroth, the city collected nearly $13 million in
sales tax in March and April. “We’re doing quite well,” Mayor Georgia Lord said. “With all the ups and downs that Arizona has had, congratulations, council and staff, because it’s mind boggling.”

The state’s response to COVID-19 has been dismal, and voters are going to show their frustration for the lack of planning and putting politics before people that’s left us unprepared and cost us countless lives. The Democratic caucus put forward a comprehensive plan to support families as they struggle financially with the shutdown and economic fallout, provide more access to testing, and keep our hospitals safe and working well. A quality education will continue to be front of mind for voters, especially with uncertainty around school start dates and in-classroom teaching. We need to ensure we’re adequately supporting schools and educators across the state so they can provide great education for children.
I’m the ranking member on the House Appropriation Committee and have been on it for several sessions, so I’ve been in the process of making budgets for many years.

Tolleson is getting ready for a big primary election: The mayor and three council seats are on the 2020 ballot. The election for city council and mayor candidates in Avondale, Buckeye, Litchfield Park and Tolleson is next week. (Goodyear does not have any seats up for election this year.) The last day to mail ballots is Wednesday, July 29, for the Aug. 4 election. On the Tolleson ballot will be current Vice Mayor Juan Rodriguez, the only candidate for the mayor position. Current Tolleson Mayor Anna Tovar is not running for reelection (though she will be on the ballot as a candidate for the Arizona Corporation Commission). For the council positions, incumbents Lupe Leyva Bandin, John Carnero and Albert Mendoza face challengers Donnie Gerhart, Jimmy Davis and Adolfo Gamez. The West Valley View emailed questions to the Tolleson candidates. Here is the second part of the responses of those who replied:
What is the role of the general plan goals and policies in your decision making on development proposals?
Jimmy Davis The general plan JIMMY DAVIS should guide the decision making of the city council. We must all work on pushing policies forward that help the city reach its longterm and short-term goals. I have always been a big-picture thinker.
Juan Rodriguez The general plan is the guiding policy that tells our story to potential developers. It talks about our priorities to recruit quality retail, housing and other economically sensitive options for Tolleson like e-commerce. It has been amended to reduce the recruitment of more warehouse/industrial development, but zoning has become our enemy.

Donnie Gerhart The general plan goal is the direction the city would like to go in. First, I would make sure the development proposal benefited the city. I would use data and research and collaborate with experts and other council members before making any decision.
Adolfo Gamez The general plan is a document that the city council created with input from residents of Tolleson. This plan is a guide by which the city uses when development presents itself to the city. This designates the different zoning options available for development within the city proper. This plan is a guide that can be changed if the city council decides to go a different route.

Investigation finds Hughes did not intimidate parent BY TOM SCANLON

Though an independent investigation found he created a “debacle” and violated policies, “Justin Hughes is retiring in good standing after serving Goodyear for more than 14 years,” said Tammy Vo, a Goodyear spokeswoman. “Although the investigation had concluded, any potential discipline on the findings never took place because Hughes never returned to duty,” she added. Hughes, Goodyear’s former deputy police chief, was suspended in October. An independent investigation found he inappropriately questioned two subordinates after one of them questioned undercover detectives using unregistered license plates. When the investigation concluded in January, Hughes went on personal leave. He retired July 10. Last week, Goodyear provided the West Valley View with another investigation of a complaint against Hughes.

It was completed by the Gilbert Police Department March 2. According to the report, “On Nov. 15, 2019, Goodyear Police Chief Santiago Rodriguez requested the Gilbert Police Department assist with an administrative investigation involving Goodyear Deputy Chief Justin Hughes.” A citizen who claimed whistleblower protection “alleged that Hughes inappropriately used his position within the police department to interfere with and cover up criminal investigations related to misconduct within Desert Edge High School,” wrote Kevin Shipley, a Gilbert detective who did the investigation. The whistleblower alleged that when a parent tried to serve a harassment order against a Desert Edge employee, Hughes intervened and intimidated the parent. Shipley concluded that this was not the case. On May 13, 2018, when the incident took place, Hughes was a sergeant. He was later promoted to deputy police chief.
Shipley’s report includes a transcript taken from body-worn camera recordings of Hughes interacting with the parent. According to the transcript, Hughes told the parent, “I know this entire case,” that the court document “100% is absolutely not correct” and “you’re perjuring yourself. You are falsifying a court document.” The parent responds by telling Hughes the matter “was between me and the judge.” When Hughes persists, the parent states, “Right now, I’m going to get an attorney.” The injunction against harassment the parent was trying to have served was related to the Desert Ridge employee allegedly holding one of the parent’s children—who was no longer a Desert Edge student—against his will at the employee’s home. Shipley stated he reviewed Goodyear police footage related to the allegation. “This statement made by (the parent) on an official court document was fac-
tually inconsistent with my observations from body-worn camera related to the incident,” Shipley wrote. Shipley wrote that he also interviewed Hughes. “Hughes denied attempting to interfere with (the parent) and explained that he was ‘trying to do a good faith deed’ and explain to (the parent) that he was perjuring himself. Hughes further explained that he had historical knowledge of (the parent) and that (the parent) had created issues at the school in the past. Hughes said he knew (the parent’s) behavior could escalate quickly and the potential for complaints against officers was high.” Hughes described the parent as “a chronic complainer.” Shipley wrote that the parent exaggerated the school incident. “I pointed out that I had only observed three uniformed officers aside from Sgt. Hughes, which was inconsistent with (the parent’s) claim that there were eight officers on scene. I also pointed out that his interaction with the uniformed offi-

The Gilbert detective’s conclusion: “After conducting multiple administrative interviews and reviewing several related police reports and body worn camera videos, this investigator found no evidence to support the allegation that Deputy Chief Justin Hughes interfered with, concealed, or suppressed criminal activity on behalf of members of the (Desert Edge employee’s) family or on behalf of Desert Edge High School and/or the Agua Fria School District; or that Deputy Chief Hughes inappropriately used his position within the police department to intimidate and prevent (the parent) from exercising his right to file a harassment order. … Additionally, no evidence was found supporting a conspiracy or cover-up related to members of the Goodyear Police Department and (a former Desert Edge teacher).”

West Valley voters have the chance to narrow down the field of candidates as their state representatives. The primary is Aug. 4. Those voting by mail should send ballots by July 29 to make sure they are counted. For polling locations, visit recorder. maricopa.gov. Arizona District 13 includes Buckeye, Litchfield Park and other parts of the West Valley. Tim Dunn and Joanne Osborne, both Republicans, are the current representatives of Legislative District 13. Dunn, Osborne and Steve Montenegro are candidates in the Republican primary. Mariana Sandoval is the lone Democrat on the primary ballot for District 13. Incumbent Sine Kerr of Buckeye, a Republican, is the only candidate from either party for the District 13 state senator position. In Avondale-Tolleson District 19, incumbent Sen. Lupe Contreras was the only
Democrat to file; Steven Robinson of Phoenix is a write-in Republican candidate. Legislative District 19 has a crowded ballot, though on the Republican side Shelby Busch is the lone candidate, and a write-in at that. The Democrat primary ballot will have four names for District 19: incumbents Diego Espinoza and Lorenzo Sierra as well as challengers Leezah Sun and Arturo Ramirez. (Ramirez has withdrawn from the race.) The West Valley View emailed questions to state candidates. I think we are going to have to examine our health care system and infrastructure so that we can look at the strains that this pandemic placed on it and ensure that we have systems in place to deal with future events like this one. Other issues like education and border security and issues that relate to our constitutional rights are always going to be important to large segments of our citizens as well, and so they each deserve our attention.

That was an incredibly deep hole to get out of, and the most important ingredient in our success was eliminating wasteful programs and spending that we could not afford. We successfully managed spending for many years, while passing the largest tax cut in state history, and still had enough money left over to fund a massive rainy-day fund.

Trump is failing Editor: Here are what Trump voters gave us. He did not cause the COVID-19 pandemic, but he sure left the door open in the United States for 3.78 million as of this writing to be infected and 142,000 deaths. He called this pandemic a “hoax” and says people who wear masks are cowards, making them a political issue. Foreign nations now consider Americans a world health threat. He uses the military to disperse irritant grenades and rubber bullets to people protesting lawfully so he can cross the street for a photo op in front of a church he never visited to hold up a Bible. Of course, during this illegal conflagration, he cowers in the White House bunker and puts a fence around the White House so we can watch a toddler in his play pen. His indifference, in large part, is leading up to 20% unemployment and an economy in shambles. His administration is made up of the most grossly incompetent and corrupt people in civil service, who simply tell this moron what he wants to hear. Military leaders now understand they have a lunatic commander-in-chief. Trump is a “desperate despot” who will likely try to declare martial law just prior to Nov. 3 to cancel the election. Trump is no longer a legitimate commander! And for those you who screamed about Benghazi, you should feel very foolish with the revelations about bounties on American troops to Taliban soldiers by the Russians. Hillary Clinton withstood an 11hour grilling by incredibly stupid Trey Gowdy and others. The Benghazi scandal proved to be nothing. This Russian bounty scandal is treason, gross incompetence/negligence, murder and sedition. It is a capi-

A vaccine for COVID-19
Editor: A vaccine for COVID sounds like the title of a Hallmark romance movie. A science fiction movie might be more appropriate. The virus has been with us for half a year, and it is spreading around the world, disrupting life as we knew it pre-COVID-19. Control is limited to simple and basic public health. We need a therapeutic agent and a vaccine if we are to halt this scourge. What does history tell us about the possibilities of a pharmacological solution? It is not encouraging. Smallpox has ravaged mankind since the dawn of history. There is evidence of the disease in Egyptian mummies dating to 300 B.C. Chinese physicians began vaccination efforts 500 years ago, and the practice spread to Europe. Cotton Mather started a program of variolation in Boston in 1721. The practice worked, but the anti-vaxxers were livid. George Washington used the technique in treating the Continental Army in 1777 and saved the troops from the disease. William Jenner, in 1796, proposed using cowpox for vaccination, and it became the treatment of choice around the world. In 1980, the WHO declared smallpox eradicated, one of the only disease entities to be eliminated. That was 200 years after George Washington saved his army. It took time. Polio was the disease my parents worried about during my childhood. In 1932, we elected a president who was
crippled by polio. FDR began the March of Dimes to develop treatment, including a vaccine. In 1955, the Salk vaccine was declared safe and effective, and President Eisenhower embraced a massive and rapid program of vaccination. Unfortunately, one of the companies given the production license made a terrible error, and that led to a small epidemic of the disease we were trying to prevent. Safety in the development, production and distribution of a vaccine is critical. Developing a vaccine at “warp speed” sounds good, but history tells us biology moves at the speed of biology. No matter how you try to speed biology up, it still takes nine months to have a baby. So where are we now, some six months into this pandemic? There are some 200 labs around the world working on a vaccine. Early trials are being conducted, and some results are encouraging. We need to understand the effectiveness and the safety of the vaccine, and we need to plan on how to produce and distribute the vaccine to the 330 million Americans and the 8 billion souls on this planet. We will not have a vaccine that
satisfies these criteria in 2020, and perhaps not in 2021. We will, eventually, learn to coexist with this virus as we have with other pathogens, such as tuberculosis, flu and measles. In the meantime, social distancing, masks and hand washing are the best we can do. One of the fastest-growing cities in the country has no problems attracting new residents. But employers? Many times over the last few years, the city of Buckeye has smiled—while gritting teeth—in congratulations as Goodyear lands one big employer after another (Microsoft, Amazon, UPS, etc.). Finally, Buckeye has landed a big one: Five Below, a chain of specialty discount stores headquartered in Philadelphia. The national retail company plans to begin construction on an 850,000-square-foot distribution center at the southwest corner of Miller and Durango roads.

The company will invest more than $75 million in land, building and equipment and initially create around 150 jobs—with plans to nearly double to 290 jobs over five years, according to Annie DeChance, a Buckeye spokeswoman.

“We are really excited to continue our expansion out west and to build out our distribution network,” said Joel Anderson, CEO and president of Five Below. He noted the distribution center will initially service stores in Arizona, California, Nevada and Colorado, “with capacity to expand as we enter new western states over the coming years, as well as to support future eCommerce operations.” Five Below has 950 stores, including nine in Arizona. It plans to more than double its stores in the next few years. Buckeye Mayor Jackie Meck, who likes his discounts, said, “Five Below and Buckeye are a perfect fit for each other. “Despite the recent challenges of COVID-19, the city continues to move forward with significant new projects,” Meck added.

Tolleson artist Edgar Fernandez is turning heads with a stunning new mural in Downtown Gilbert. Located on a back wall of Flashback Antiques and visible from East Page Avenue, a mural Fernandez calls “Gema” (“Gem,” in English) depicts a row of local Latinas and a raven.
It was commissioned by Mary Ellen Fresquez, who owns the building that houses the antiques store. “My desire was to have art that would inspire young girls,” said Fresquez, who originally wanted the mural to depict well-known women in Arizona but decided to instead highlight Latinas after conversations with the artist and her female relatives.

“I feel that it is important to celebrate diversity, and the mural certainly accomplishes this,” she added. Fernandez, who moved to Arizona from Los Angeles, decided to use female figures that are important to his life journey and would represent diversity in facial features and lifestyles. This is his first attempt at creating a realistic portrait mural. “With this series of portraits, I am trying to convey diversity among women of color and representing their resilience and the empowering role they play in our society,” he said. The portraits, from left, are of his friend Sam Fresquez (Mary Ellen
Fresquez’s granddaughter), cousin Ruby, fiancee Elida, cousin Esmeralda and friend Gloria Martinez-Granados. “All of these female models for this mural play a special part in my journey,” he said. “The diversity of all of these women have different backgrounds and lifestyles and can still gather together and respect each other’s uniqueness.” Fernandez, an ASU graduate, made 23 trips to Gilbert during late spring and early summer to complete the project. He painted in the early mornings to avoid the burgeoning heat. “I feel confident and proud of the finished product of this mural. Knowing and accepting the challenges of the heat,
drive and realistic opportunity to express myself have brought my creativity and patience to a whole new level,” he said. His past mural work has been in private properties, while public murals may be viewed in the multicultural Miracle Mile neighborhood on 16th Street and McDowell Road in Phoenix and in Shaw Elementary School on 13th Street and Washington Avenue, also in Phoenix. A lot of Fernadez’s art so far has been modern ancestral art. For nearly a decade, he has displayed his work and shared his knowledge in solo and group shows, mural projects and youth art workshops. In each work, he seeks to embrace

the ancestral spirit that flows through his heart and project it to the community. In the Gilbert mural, he celebrates his ancestral spirit by embracing the power women played in keeping the Latino culture strong. “Embracing my ancestral spirit is also being played in the fierce facial features within each female portrait, and the powerful organic designs in the background are tied to natural movements and vibrations that connect me to my ancestors,” he said. Gema depicts Spanish text from an old Mexican song of the same name that translates to: “You are the gem that God converted into a woman.”

Schools ready to begin unique fall semester BY ERIN BRASSEY

For most West Valley schools, next week is back to school—but hardly back to normal. After previously ordering schools not to open classrooms for in-person teaching until Aug. 17, Gov. Doug Ducey said at a July 23 press conference that the opening date for in-person learning is left to the Arizona Department of Health Services. “Arizona will be open for learning,” Ducey said. “And our priorities are going to be public health and safety.” The benchmarks for opening schools have not yet been released from ADHS; however, most districts plan to start school in a distanced format on their originally planned date. Despite the possibility of in-person classes still not being in session, Ducey announced that districts must have a location ready to open Aug. 17 for parents who need supervision for their children. “Children deserve a safe learning environment,” he said. “So our schools must provide free, on-site learning.” Many West Valley districts are offering options for families once classrooms are open for in-person learning. In addition to in-person and self-paced online models, districts plan to offer “distance learning,” a remote learning model that is led by a live teacher and set to a schedule. Here are what the West Valley districts have planned as of July 27.
Tolleson Union High School District This district includes Copper Canyon High School in Glendale, La Joya Community High School; West Point High School and Westview High School in Avondale; and Tolleson Union High School and University High School in Tolleson. TUHSD plans to begin classes Tuesday, Aug. 4, in a distance learning format. Once classrooms are open for in-person learning, families will have a choice between flexible, in-person or fully online learning.
Flexible learning was designed to make it easy to transition between remote and in-person learning. Those who chose the fully online option must stay in it until at least the end of the semester and receive counselor approval to transition back to in-person learning.
Agua Fria Union High School District This district includes Agua Fria High School in Avondale, Canyon View High School in Waddell, Desert Edge High School and Millennium High School in Goodyear and Verrado High School in Buckeye. The district also offers a choice between remote, in-person and online learning when classrooms are cleared to reopen. All students will begin school in a remote format, and the district plans to move to an in-person hybrid format when it is deemed safe. Freshman students will begin school Monday, Aug. 3, for orientation day. All other students will begin classes Tuesday, Aug. 4. The first three days of virtual learning will be half days.
Buckeye Union High School District This district includes Buckeye Union High School, Youngker High School and the BUHSD Learning Center in Buckeye and Estrella Foothills High School in Goodyear. BUHSD will begin school Wednesday, Aug. 5, in a distance learning format and plans to move to a hybrid model once it is deemed safe. Families have been given an option between the in-person hybrid model and fully online learning. Those who choose the fully online model will be given the option
to switch to an in-person model at break.
Saddle Mountain Unified School District This district includes Tartesso Elementary School in Buckeye and Tonopah Valley High School in Tonopah. SMUSD will begin classes Thursday, Aug. 6, in a remote format. Options for students eventually will include remote, in-person and fully online learning. Students in remote or in-person learning will participate in classes four days a week starting on Tuesdays and ending on Fridays. Online learners will be self-paced and have access to their materials all the time.
Avondale Elementary School District This district includes three kindergarten through eighth-grade schools, two preschool through eighth-grade schools, two elementary schools, one middle school and three specialized academies with focuses in STEM, special education and gifted education. AESD will begin school Monday, Aug. 3, in a distance learning environment. Students will later have options of online and in-person learning. The fully online digital academy is designed to be a full-year commitment.
Buckeye Elementary School District This district includes Bales Elementary School, Buckeye Elementary Preschool, Buckeye Elementary School, Inca Elementary School, Marionneaux Elementary School, Steven R. Jasinski Elementary School, Sundance Elemen-
tary School and WestPark Elementary School in Buckeye. BESD plans to begin classes in an online format Wednesday, Aug. 5. Families were given the option for their children to participate in distance, in-person or fully online learning. The online option is designed to be a full-year commitment, but those in distance learning will have the opportunity to transition back to in-person learning at the end of each quarter once schools are open.
Littleton Elementary School District This district includes Collier Elementary School, Estrella Vista STEM Academy, Littleton Elementary STEM Academy and Quentin STEM Academy in Avondale and Country Place Leadership Academy, Fine Arts Academy and Tres Rios Service Academy in Tolleson. LESD began school in a remote format July 29. Families have options for their children to participate in distance, in-person or fully online learning. LESD distributed laptops to students recently.
Litchfield Elementary School District This district includes nine elementary schools, four middle schools, two preschool through eighth-grade schools, a public day school and an online school. LESD plans to begin school in a distanced learning environment Wednesday, Aug. 5. Families were offered the choice of distance, in-person or fully online learning. The district planned virtual open houses Monday, Aug. 3, and Tuesday, Aug. 4.

OBITUARIES Richard Manuel Hernandez Richard "Dickie" M. Hernandez, 62, Was called home by the Lord on July 15,2020. Dickie was born on March 20, 1958 in Oceanside, CA to Manuel and Rachel Hernandez. Richard had a long career with the United States Postal as both a Letter Carrier and Supervisor for the past 31 years. Dickies greatest moments were spent with wife, children, and grandchild coaching and teaching them to play softball, baseball, umpiring, wrestling, and soccer, going fishing, hunting, and riding his motorcycle. He is survived by his wife Catherine; his three children Patricia, Richard II and Steven; his 7 Grandchildren Isaiah, Richard III "Manuel", Isabella, Anjelica, Mia, Elizabeth, and Ayanna; his mother Rachel and numerous, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Manuel; brother, Ernie; and Granddaughter, Paytn. Richard brought great joy into everyone's lives that he knew, he will forever be missed and loved. A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 31, 2020 at 11:00 am at the Mexican Gospel Mission Church, 2925 W. Polk Street, Phoenix, AZ 85009. Burial will take place directly afterwards at Resthaven Mortuary with a Reception to follow.

Josie Hernandez Josefa "Josie" Hernandez, 77, of Goodyear, AZ, went home to Heaven on July 8, 2020. She was born in Fabens, Texas on March 20, 1943 to the late Hilario and Aurora Gonzales. Josie was married to Agustin "Bobby" Hernandez for 56 years and was a loving Mom, Nana and Great-Nana. She was also a beloved sister, cousin and friend. Josie is survived by six sisters, five brothers and five daughters: Susan, (Tony Alva); Olivia, Victoria and Rosemary Hernandez and Roberta Rodriguez. In 2000 she received her Masters degree in library science and was a school librarian from 2000-2015 when she retired. She is preceded in death by her daughter, Catherine who passed on Feb 10, 2005, both her parents and her brother Charles (Chuck). Although greatly missed, it is of much comfort that she will be reunited with her daughter as well as her parents, brother and other friends and loved ones.
