Abrazo staff is protective of staff, patients BY CHRISTINA FUOCO-KARASINSKI
Since the pandemic hit, every month has been ever changing, and Abrazo CEO Brian Elisco can attest to that. One thing that has remained the same is the dedication of his staff, or as he calls them, the health care heroes. “I feel like the hospital system has done a really good job continuing to react to it,” said Elisco, who graduated from Chaparral High School in Scottsdale. “We were setting up surge plans very early into the pandemic. We’re trying to be protective of our staff and the community we serve. The team is beyond fantastic and professional and has been pointed in the right direction from the beginning to make sure we’re focused on health care workers first and foremost. We’ve been using that as a guiding light to make decisions. I can look back in good faith and see we’ve done that.” Locally, at Abrazo’s Arrowhead Campus in Glendale, a segregated unit is dedicated to the COVID-19 patients. However, all hospitals in the Abrazo system have treated and continue to treat the COVID population. The hospitals and medical centers follow similar protocols for patient and health care worker safety, and share best practices. “The ICU nurses have been incredible, as have all of our nurses,” he said. “One of the things we really learned going through—and it was really amplified going through this COVID response—was how big of a team effort the health care

effort is. “The intensive care and telemetry nurses have been true heroes, as have the environmental services and housekeeping. They’ve done an incredible job with building conversions. The respiratory therapists have done an incredible job as well.” Jodi Imperato, director for critical care and rapid care, agreed. “I have to say the nurses are tougher than firefighters, I think,” she said. “They’re braver and I don’t mean that in a negative way to firefighters. I would not want to walk into a burning building. “It’s same and different. This can be overwhelming at times and they just sign up for extra shifts and want to help. I have
nurses who ask to work with this population. They want to help. They want to be assigned here. They’re choosing to help because they know it’s needed and it’s their calling.” Elisco said patients who have procedures scheduled with Abrazo that are not COVID-19 related do not need to be nervous. “We have universal masking for every single health care worker and all who enter our building,” he said. “We’ve even gone to universal use of eye protection for health care workers to limit the risk of exposure as well. Understanding COVID-19 antibody testing
BY SUMMIT MEDICAL WEIGHT LOSS AND WELLNESS
It’s possible to catch SARS-CoV-2, the novel coronavirus, and not know it. That’s because not everyone infected with the virus has symptoms. But there’s a 10-minute, fast blood test that may tell you if you’ve been infected. It’s called an antibody test. Experts hope it can give health officials a better idea of how widespread this new coronavirus is.
What is an antibody test? You may hear it called a serology test. It looks for certain things called antibodies in your blood. Your body makes these when it fights an infection, like COVID-19. The same thing happens when you get a vaccine, like a flu shot. That’s how you develop immunity to a virus. The antibody test isn’t checking for the virus itself. Instead, it looks to see whether your immune system—your body’s defense against illness—has responded to the infection.
Arizona is a hotspot. Summit Medical Weight Loss and Wellness offers COVID-19 antibody rapid testing. Call the Sun City clinic at 602-622-9393 and the other locations at 480-306-4410. (Photo courtesy Summit Medical Weight Loss and Wellness)
You’ll give a small drop of blood through a finger prick. Doctors test for two kinds of antibodies to SARSCoV-2. They look for—IgM antibodies, which develop early in an infection; and IgG antibodies, which are more likely to show up later after you’ve recovered It takes your body about four weeks to develop IgM antibodies. But scientists aren’t sure how long it’ll take for this to happen with SARS-CoV-2. More tests are needed to find out. Keep in mind that current antibody tests can’t tell you if you’re immune to COVID-19. That’s because we don’t know how long these antibodies might protect you against the coronavirus. And these tests shouldn’t be used to diagnose the virus.
again. When paired with other scientific information, this can help researchers understand who might be immune to the virus. The hope is that people with antibodies to COVID-19 can safely get back to work and normal life quicker. These tests may also help with an experimental treatment for COVID-19 called convalescent plasma. Plasma is the liquid part of your blood. Researchers are studying how antibodies in plasma donated by people who’ve recovered from COVID-19 might help those who are ill with the virus. One theory is that this plasma may help sick people get better faster. But more research is needed. You can volunteer to donate plasma through the National COVID-19 Convalescent Plasma Project. Or ask your local blood donation center for information.
in contact with anyone that had the virus, or believe you had the virus—you should consider getting your antibodies tested now. The CDC, along with other private and public labs, is working to develop more tests for the public. Right now, the agency gave the OK for more than 70 companies to sell their tests. That means these tests aren’t FDA approved, but the manufacturers promise to follow certain rules when making them.
How do they help?
Who should get one?
Who should be tested?
Antibody tests can show how common COVID-19 is. Once scientists know who has had the virus, they can find out how sick it makes most people. They can also study what happens if people who’ve had it are exposed to it
If you’ve tested positive for COVID-19 and have fully recovered— or sometime after December 2019 you exhibited any of the symptoms of flu, pneumonia, Coronavirus, etc. but were not diagnosed, or you believe you came
Have you been diagnosed with the coronavirus? Since December 2019, have you exhibited any of the symptoms or signs of illness, such as fever, sore throat, body soreness, flu, pneumonia, coronavirus,
How does it work?
Are they accurate? If you test positive for SARS-CoV-2 antibodies, that usually means you’ve had COVID-19. But you may get a negative result if you’ve only had the virus a short time. And it’s possible to get exposed and not develop antibodies. You may also get a “false positive.” That means you have antibodies but had a different kind of coronavirus.
etc., but were not diagnosed? Did you come in contact with anyone that had the coronavirus? Do you believe you had the virus and were asymptomatic? If you answered “yes” to any of the above, contact Summit Medical Weight Loss and Wellness Clinics, who is offering COVID-19 (finger prick) rapid testing at its Tempe, Sun City and State Route 51 and Shea clinics. On-site and restaurant staff testing are also available. Call or text 602-622-9383 for an appointment at the Sun City clinic. Recently, I had a patient tell me they wanted to wait to begin their physical therapy treatment until they get an MRI, “that way you know what you’re treating.” I can see the logic in this patient’s thinking. It makes sense. How could we possibly know what we are treating until we have an image of what is going on? In her mind, an MRI would provide that image that will help to guide my treatment so I can “fix” her condition. Here is where that thought process goes wrong. X-ray and MRI imaging doesn’t tell the whole story. MRI images don’t tell us or a doctor how the disc was herniated. MRI images won’t tell us why you have degenerative disc or joint disease, facet joint arthropathy or spinal stenosis. To effectively treat your condition, it is imperative for us to know how and why. There is a high financial cost of getting these images and, frankly, they rarely help the physical therapist with managing common lumbar spine conditions. It is recommended you get treatment from a specialist who treats low back pain and can assess your unique movement habits, identify restrictions in your joints, and evaluate your core strength. This kind of assessment more appropriately describes why and how

you have low back pain. The short answer is we don’t need an MRI or an X-ray to know what is going on because these scans can’t identify the cause of the pain. There is no correlation between pain intensity and tissue damage. I have had so many patients come back with the report and see the term “mild” written all over it and say, “how can it be mild when my back hurts so badly?!” That is because the findings of an MRI and the amount of back pain you have are simply not relatable. The image will report on the condition of your spine, which is highly subjective by the radiologist, by the way, and highly predictable given your age and background. An MRI will give you an image of your spine, joints, discs and nerves and are necessary if cancer or severe nerve involvement is suspected. Physical therapy practices operate with the intention of keeping patients with musculoskeletal injuries away from hospitals, emergency rooms and urgent care clinics. During this time, that consideration is more critical than ever to limit unnecessary potential exposure to contagious illnesses. It is imperative that, should you be in pain, you identify the root cause of that pain by asking a specialist to evaluate how and why you came to be suffering to begin with.
what we preach,” Elisco said. “The environment is as clean as possible,” he added. As for misinformation about its ICU bed situation, Elisco laid it on the line. “We’ve certainly had days that have been busy,” he explained. “As of right now, we are at a point where we have enough capacity in our ER department and inpatient units to include ICU to care for patients who need us. “We are continuing to encourage patients who have emergent needs, whether it’s a heart issue or an issue from a neurologist perspective to be seen. We don’t want any delays in care because we’ll see adverse events.”

The Palazzo retooling programming, practices amid pandemic BY THE PALAZZO
The Palazzo is continuously monitoring the ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic and adjusting its programming and social opportunities accordingly. Recreation and social interaction have long been a big part of life at the community, and they are critical for the residents’ well-being and morale. So, while the staff continues to prioritize recreational and social opportunities, it does so with a focus on safety. Some programs have been revamped to reflect the most up-to-date recommendations. Initially, The Palazzo began offering socially distant classes and activities including bingo, sip and paint and movies in the theater, but spiking COVID-19 cases across the state have led to the postponement of these in-person activities for the time being. To make up for the change, The Palazzo has enhanced the in-apartment opportunities for its residents, and it now offers a broad range of exercise, interactive and entertainment opportunities residents
can enjoy either online or through their TVs. Residents looking to use this time to work out may do so through SilverSneakers and similar interactive programs. They may also take advantage of yoga, zen, line dancing and low-impact home-workout options by participating in live and prerecorded classes. Those looking to learn more about a particular culture or art medium now also have in-room opportunities to do so. Residents can join lectures or seminars detailing the history of countries or take virtual tours of top-rated museums, and The Palazzo is offering art supplies they can use during online classes. Karaoke is also available in an inroom format, and residents may also access religious and cultural events and services without having to leave their apartments. The Palazzo’s activity team makes regular rounds to remind residents of these and other opportunities, while the tech team is readily available in the event that they need help accessing these programs through

Glencroft offers Parkinson’s Immersion Program BY STEVE HELLER
Glencroft Center for Modern Aging Vice President and Director of Operations
Nearly 1 million individuals are living with Parkinson’s Disease in the United States. To help combat this growing epidemic, Glencroft Center for Modern Aging has created the ZoeLife Parkinson’s Immersion Program. This program allows individuals to hit the “reset button” in an environment where they can live, play and work on the symptoms associated with Parkinson’s Disease in a fun and engaging manner.
We created an environment for individuals to live, eat according to customized nutrition plans, get involved in a speech therapy program, work out with a performance team and get involved in the virtual reality Parkinson’s platform. We discovered that once a person began to engage fully in the process of working on the symptoms experienced with Parkinson’s Disease, they began to see great results. We took several of our independent living residents with Parkinson’s disease and enrolled them into our six-week program. We evaluated and
customized a weekly schedule for our participants and engaged them heavily in the spiritual and emotional pillar curriculum of Glencroft University. Utilizing specialized classes and weekly schedules are what sets Glencroft apart from others. Our hope is to take what we are learning through this holistic immersive approach and create an ongoing, customizable platform that enables us to work with clients from all over the country— making Glencroft Center for Modern Aging a destination where living is the goal.

IPL treatment benefits can be long lasting
8
BY SUE CLARK
Aesthetician/Laser Technician
Intense pulsed light or IPL is a noninvasive treatment using light to target skin imperfections such as sun damage, freckles, fine lines and wrinkles, broken capillaries, vascular lesions, acne and redness. By emitting a series of gentle pulses over the treatment area, the light penetrates through the skin and is absorbed by the abnormally dilated vessels, pigmentation or water. To determine if you’re a candidate for IPL, schedule a consultation with a licensed professional laser technician. If accepted, patients undergo treatments that are 30 to 60 minutes and they are required to wear protective eye goggles. When the pulse of light

is delivered, the sensation is similar to the snap of a rubber band. After the treatment, the patients must wear sunscreen and avoid sun exposure. IPL benefits are glowing, smooth and more youthful looking skin. IPL treatment’s results will be long lasting after the initial series of three to five treatments and the use of a professional home-skincare system. On average, most patients see a 90% improvement after completing their series of treatments. Biswas Plastic Surgery offers 50% off their first IPL treatment. Pool Workouts do much more than cool you down BY JOELLA HOPKINS
Vice President of Group Fitness at EōS Fitness
Summer is officially here. Think of backyard barbecues with friends and
family, watching sunsets on the deck with a cool drink and lots of fun in the sun. But one of the biggest things that always comes to mind when the temperatures start to climb is, “Where can I find a pool to beat the heat?” Pools are social, fun, and great exercise all in one. The pool is always a great way to get a workout, sometimes without even realizing you’re burning calories.
Get back in the game
Water workouts can also be an amazing way to start a workout routine for the first time or after an extended period of time being more sedentary. Recently we’ve all been through a strange time when we have been stuck in the house and unable to get to the gym and many people have fallen off the fitness wagon.
A workout for everyone It doesn’t matter if you are a kid, middle-aged or a senior— pool workouts can benefit all of them. You will get a wholebody workout in the water and can focus on building strength in your core, legs, arms, back and booty. Because the water surrounds your body and adds extra resistance without impact, you are able to do many things safely in the water that you may not be able to do on land. It can provide a cardio and resistance workout all in one without the added pressure on your joints, ligaments and bones.

Continuing speech-language therapy virtually

BY JENNIFER BUCKLER M.S., CCC-SLP DR. GEORGE WOLFORD, M.S., CCC-SLP Midwestern University Speech-Language Institute
Clients who have speech and language deficits may be able to improve their communication skills with speech-language therapy services through an electronic medium known as “teletherapy,” “telehealth” or “telepractice.” This option can assist clients for whom travel is difficult or who may be concerned about attending speech-language sessions in the clinic setting. Licensed speech-language pathologists (SLPs) can provide therapy services in real time in an interactive, virtual environment. During or before an initial telehealth evaluation session, the SLP will assess the adequacy of the equipment available to the client to help determine that it will ensure a successful online session. Each client is assessed to determine their needs and suitability for

Individuals who need speech therapy to improve their production of speech sounds, understanding and expression of language, and fluency issues are often good candidates for teletherapy because they can interact with the SLP in the virtual environment. Even clients who may have difficulty concentrating or interacting in real time via a computer screen may be able to participate with the help of a parent or caregiver “e-helper” during the online sessions. The SLP can also provide quality consultation and training with parents or caregivers, teaching them to embed communication opportunities into their typical daily routines to enhance speech and language skills and to help limit communication barriers. While an online environment is not ideal for all clients, for many clients for whom in-person services are not an option, telepractice services can be an effective way to meet speech and language goals.

How serious is angina?
BY FRED CICETTI
Angina pectoris—or simply angina—is the medical term for chest pain or discomfort usually caused by coronary artery disease. Angina is a sign that someone is at increased risk of heart attack, cardiac arrest and sudden cardiac death. If you get angina, you should get medical attention immediately. Angina (pronounced “an-JI-nuh” or “AN-juh-nuh”) hits when the heart doesn’t get enough blood. This usually happens when there is a narrowing or blockage in one or more of the vessels that supply blood to the heart. Angina can come from exertion. It may make you sweat or lose your breath. The pain can strike your arm or neck, too.
“Stable angina” comes on with exertion and then goes away easily. You can have this kind of angina for a long time. When the pattern of angina changes a lot, it’s called “unstable angina.” This is a danger sign. Unstable angina may be the first sign of a heart attack.

Arizona Oncology: Don’t skip at-home cancer screenings
WE’RE SETTING THE STANDARD IN CANCER CARE.
Rezwan Chowdhury, MD Irene Taw, MD Jerry Lucas, MD
Don’t forget at-home cancer screenings, even during the coronavirus pandemic. (Photo courtesy Arizona Oncology)
BY ARIZONA ONCOLOGY
While it’s important to stay vigilant about changes in our bodies at all times, it’s especially vital during the COVID-19 pandemic. Routine doctor visits are being postponed, including normal checkups, and it may be hard to get an appointment once the doctor’s office reopens. Besides checking yourself for COVID-19 symptoms seemingly 10 times a day, you should also pay attention to how you feel otherwise. There are some general warning signs as well as some at-home cancer screenings you can do. If you notice anything out of the ordinary, reach out to your doctor to start a discussion.
Know your own body The first rule is to know your own body. There are a certain number of aches and pains we feel as we get older, but if something feels more significant than normal, you should take note. By having a general understanding of what’s normal for you… you can pay better attention to any warning signs that your body may be sending. • Unusual or unexpected bleeding • Breast self-awareness • Changes to scrotum or testicles
• Changes to your skin • Unexplained pain • Changes in bathroom habits • Changes in the mouth or throat • It’s not necessarily cancer Remember, with many of these changes are explanations that don’t mean cancer. But at the same time, you don’t want to ignore something and think it’s just nothing. It’s best to have it checked out. Right now, we each have to do our part to monitor our own health but don’t send yourself into a panic. Just be aware of what’s normal and take note if you see changes that don’t go back to normal after a week or two. If you can’t get in to see your doctor in person, many doctors can now conduct some appointments via teleconference or phone call. And, as always. Make sure that you know what cancer screenings you should be getting and if there are specific things you should be doing at home to better monitor your health. Even if you’re a cancer survivor, be sure you get screened for the other types of cancer at regular intervals. For more information, visit ArizonaOncology. com/blog

Vitalant begins testing blood donations for COVID-19 antibodies BY VITALANT
Vitalant is the first national blood bank to test all blood donations for antibodies to SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus that causes COVID-19. The nation’s largest independent nonprofit blood collector—serving hospital patients in Arizona—is providing the test results to donors who complete successful blood donations through August 31. Donors are urged to give blood as soon as possible. Appointments are strongly recommended; visit vitalant. org or call 877-25-VITAL (877-2584825). The antibody test—authorized by the Food and Drug Administration— indicates if the donor’s immune system has produced antibodies to the virus, regardless of whether they ever showed symptoms. It is possible that over time, the broad use of antibody tests and clinical follow-up will provide the medical community with more information on whether a person
who has recovered from COVID-19 is at a lower risk of infection, and if so, for how long. For more information, visit vitalant.org/antibodytest. “While a positive antibody test does not mean that someone is immune to COVID-19, it does mean that they may be eligible to donate convalescent plasma in the future and help people with the disease,” said Cliff Numark, Vitalant’s chief of marketing. “Convalescent plasma can be given directly to patients currently battling COVID-19 to help boost their ability to fight their illness.” Vitalant began collecting and distributing convalescent plasma in April. For more information, visit vitalant.org/ COVIDfree. The antibody tests are part of a full panel of tests that Vitalant performs on successful blood donations. There is no charge for the test and donors can see their results approximately two weeks after donating by logging into their online donor accounts.

Then there is “variant angina pectoris” or “Prinzmetal’s angina.” It usually occurs spontaneously and almost always occurs when a person is at rest. It doesn’t follow physical exertion or emotional stress, either. Variant angina is caused by transient coronary artery spasm. Physicians have a variety of diagnostic tools. An electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG) can tell a doctor if your heart has been damaged by a heart attack. If the EKG is done while you are having chest pain, it can also show if your angina is caused by a problem with your heart. A stress test is often done while you walk on a treadmill. Your doctor will look at your EKG to see if it’s abnormal when you exercise. Your doctor may also have X-rays of the heart taken before and after you exercise. These pictures can show if an area of the heart is not getting enough blood during exercise.
A cardiac catheterization involves inserting a long, thin tube into an artery in the arm or leg and then guiding it into the heart. Dye is injected into the arteries around the heart. X-rays are taken. The X-rays will show it if any of the arteries that supply the heart are blocked. Most people diagnosed with heart disease have to take medicine. Medicines called beta blockers, calcium channel blockers and nitrates can help relieve angina. There are surgical options. Angioplasty uses a tiny balloon to push open blocked arteries around the heart. The balloon is inserted in an artery in the arm or leg. A stent (a small tube) might be put into the artery where the blockage was to hold the artery open. In bypass surgery, the surgeon uses a healthy blood vessel taken from your leg, arm, chest or abdomen and connects it to the other arteries in your heart so that blood is bypassed around the diseased or blocked area This increases the blood flow to the heart.
