RIP, MY BELOVED SISTER

O

n July 27, 2020, I received a phone call—one I have dreaded for as long as I can remember. The call was to inform me that my sister, Alane Hohenberg, had died of non-COVID issues at the age of 80. I’m the youngest of three sisters, with seven and 14 years between my middle sister Mary and my now most dearly departed Alane. When it came to how we related to each other, I was always the dreaded, too loud, too demonstrative, “too everything,” baby sister. I know that Alane often cringed about my somewhat public life, but I also know from mutual friends—and in her later years, from her directly— Alane Hohenberg at age 15 with one of her horses. that she was proud of me. I resurrected the following piece from a play that I co-wrote and co-directed for “Theater of Process,” an anti-sexist theater group I co-founded in the early 1970s. This is from the show, “Cameos,” that we performed in Los Angeles in the late ’70s: I talked to my sister today. I love my sister. We don’t talk enough. I’ve always wanted to be like her. My sister was a rodeo queen when I was a little girl. What a goddess. She changed my life because of her spirit and her horse. We used to live on a small ranch outside of Denver. I remember watching her barrel-racing in the field, being thrown, chasing the darn thing, actually swearing, but best of all, coming in after a hard day, flopping down at the dinner table, exhausted, smelling like horse and leather. I couldn’t take my eyes off her. She was in control and totally free. Beautiful. She wasn’t like Donna Reed or Lucy Ricardo. She was the essence of herself when she was with her horse. I decided early on that the only way to escape the bonds of

girlhood was to ge’ch yourself a HORSE. Heck, they’d have to give up on the starch and ribbons, if you had a horse for a friend. HORSE meant: Transportation Freedom Sweat Wind Power Danger Dreams Privacy Competition Adventure Grace and Beauty Odors of leather and manure Nuzzles Boots and hats Responsibility Velvet Lips Love Being a real live princess We moved before I could have a horse of my own. I did get a full-sized bike before anyone else did, though. I named her Star. Full name: Star Schwinn Snortland. I ran faster than everyone on the block, dedicated all my art classes to perfecting a horse head, and developed nodes on my vocal cords from practicing neighs. My sister taught me involvement in my life, horse, or no horse. Listen, the soul of many women is a horse, whether you had one or not. You’ll know who you are when you hear that, or you’ll know someone like that. Check it out with a woman you know who loves horses. She’ll tell you. Make sure you tell your siblings what they mean to you, now. I’ve been making a practice of letting people know what I feel about them while they are living. You could call it a living eulogy. RIP Alane, which in your case means Rest in Pastures. n Ellen has been writing Consider This for decades. You can reach her at ellen@beautybitesbeast.com

‘IT DIDN’T NEED TO BE THIS WAY’ SCHIFF CONTINUES COVID-19 TOWN HALL BY MATTHEW RODRIGUEZ

R

ep. Adam Schiff (D-Pasadena) continued his string of town halls July 30 with Los Angeles Unified School District board member Jackie Goldberg and Dr. Robert Kim-Farley of UCLA as the trio updated his constituents on the growing COVID-19 pandemic. “We now have lost almost 150,000 Americans from the virus. It didn’t need to be this way,” said Schiff. “Other nations have done a far superior job of traveling down the curve, while our cases have continued, tragically, to rise.” The United States continues to lead the world in infections and deaths as 4.75 million Americans have contracted the virus and 157,000 have died. Los Angeles County continues to be the epicenter of the virus in California ranking No.1 in infections with nearly 200,000 cases—about 40% of total cases in the state. “I kind of describe where we are now as a second plateau of the first wave here in California and Los Angeles,” said Kim-Farley, a professor at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health. “We went up, instituted very strict stay at home, we’ve opened up a bit, cases rose and now we’ve had to dial back and cases are beginning to level off.” Kim-Farley continued declaring that there are three protagonists in this situation: the government, businesses and individuals. “All who need to play their part,” he said. “Governments and their public health departments are monitoring the situation closely, issuing the appropriate guidelines for the situations. “Businesses and schools need to be following these guidelines… As individuals, we really need to be playing our role as well to make sure that we are wearing masks, that we are properly practicing physical distancing.” As many in the country debate on the safety of reopening schools, Goldberg and her colleagues have already taken steps to move to an online curriculum for the upcoming school year. “We want to open. We are working right now at schools,” said Goldberg. “Every school is being prepared as if we are going to open at some point. We do not want to wait until this virus has gone down heavily to now say ‘Now it’s time to get the schools ready’. We’re going to be ready the day it is safe to open.” She also announced that parents who are concerned for their child’s health or grades may also opt-out and participate in an online curriculum. Goldberg also said that the district will continue its food distribution program throughout the year. “We decided very early on that food that kids get that’s 80 percent free and reduced lunch could not end when the classes closed on campuses,” she said. “We have been feeding at 63 sites [and] about 250,000 meals are distributed each day. At our peak, it was closer to half a million each day.” This came to the delight of a constituent who was laid off and struggled to make ends meet. She pleaded for help from the congressman and board member for help. “I don’t know how I am going to survive,” the woman, only identified with her first name of Nikki said as her voice cracked over the phone. “You know to pay my bills, pay my mortgage. What is going to happen to people like me? There are millions and millions of people like me. We don’t know what to do next week.” Earlier in the town hall, Schiff made it clear that he and other politicians were hoping to extend the federal unemployment payments to help the 33 million other Americans who are unemployed. “I wish that all my colleagues in the House and Senate could be on the call with us tonight to hear what you just said,” he said. “I don’t understand why some of the folks I work with do not get what people like you are going through.” Goldberg added saying that the woman could go to any LAUSD food distribution site and grab food. She also extended the offer to anyone in need of food in this time, saying they do not check IDs to see if they are a student 4 PASADENA WEEKLY | 08.06.20

in the district. “At least as food is concerned you are entitled to any one of the 63 grab-and-go centers of LA Unified to get up to five meals, each day, five days a week between 8 in the morning and 11 in the morning,” Goldberg responded emphatically. “Don’t go hungry. I can’t do anything about the rest of it and I feel so overwhelmed by what I just heard but at least you will not go hungry. As long as LA Unified exists you will not go hungry.” As the town hall came Adam Schiff to an end and after fielding questions from his constituents Schiff concluded the meeting with some words of comfort for those who listened in. “To my constituents, I just want to say, we’re going to get through this. There are hard times ahead certainly — but we are going to get through this.” n

COVID COUNT Reported Cases in Pasadena and surrounding areas as of Monday, August 3 South Pasadena: 222; Alhambra: 931; Altadena: 470; Arcadia: 327; Glendale: 2397; Monrovia: 534; San Gabriel: 418; Total Confirmed Cases in Pasadena: 2,004 Total Deaths in Pasadena: 109 Total Confirmed Cases in LA County: 192,167 Total Deaths in LA County: 4,692 • New cases of the novel coronavirus have dropped in Pasadena since the city recorded two consecutive record-breaking weeks. Since Saturday, July 25, the city has reported half as many new cases on average. While this may be welcoming news, the city is still reporting twice as many new infections compared to early June. Pasadena also reported two new deaths of two men in their 70s on Friday, July 31. • According to Pasadena Star-News, many in the city are growing frustrated with those who refuse to wear masks. This frustration has made its way to city officials as spokeswoman Lisa Derderian reports citizens shaming others for not wearing masks and reporting locations of large gatherings. This report comes as the officials closed the Oak Grove Disc Golf Course after an unsanctioned tournament. Derderian says that the city is hoping to gain compliance through education without issuing citations. • With California’s vaccination rates drop statewide, Pasadena Public Health Director Dr. Ying-Ying Goh, urges residents to immunize children to avoid a co-infection with both the flu and COVID-19. In a report published in May, the California Department of Public Health announced that childhood vaccinations had dropped 40 percent since the year prior. While children will not return to their schools for the beginning of the academic year, Goh recommends vaccinations to protect kids from other diseases. — Information Complied by Matthew Rodriguez

T

he Pasadena Jaycees have teamed up with local race car driver, Jonathan Eshom, to create the “Race for Relief” raffle, which will help benefit communities most impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Jaycees, Eshom and his team, US Racetronics, wanted to highlight that minority communities have been disproportionately impacted by the pandemic, and this raffle will help raise funds to give back to those communities. Funds will go toward hygiene kits that the Pasadena Jaycees will distribute to Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA), Friends in Deed, Foothill Unity Center and the Downtown Women’s Shelter. “I think it is important to highlight social and economic injustices,” Eshom said. Team Principal Shane Seneviratne added, “We are excited that Jonathan wants to create change in the community and we are even more excited that he has chosen to involve the team in this raffle.” Raffle tickets are $10 and each of the three winners will get to experience what it is like to be a race car driver for the day. They will receive up to five laps, at speed, in a Lamborghini Super Trofeo race car. In addition, their name will be featured on the car as if they were the actual driver. The raffle closes on Friday, August 14, and the winners will be announced the following Monday. To enter the raffle, go to pasadenajaycees.org/raffle. The Pasadena Jaycees began in 1929 and have been a volunteer and leadership training organization for people aged 21 to 40 ever since. IT’S A BRIDGE PARTY PASADENA HERITAGE BRINGS THE CELEBRATION TO HOMES WORLDWIDE BY CHRISTINA FUOCO-KARASINSKI

P

asadena Heritage is celebrating one of the city’s most iconic structures with a party that’s arriving in homes around the world. The Colorado Street Bridge Party has gone virtual Sunday, August 9, to Saturday, August 15. “We can’t have large gatherings, but we still wanted to celebrate the bridge,” says Katherine Baxter, Pasadena Heritage’s communication coordinator. “We came up with the idea of the virtual celebration of the Colorado Street Bridge. We tried to implement some of the parties that people love about the bridge party, but still keep it different. It’s never going to be a true bridge party, but we did our best to do something engaging and fun for everyone.” The lineup includes a classic car cruise around the historic Pasadena neighborhoods and across the Colorado Street Bridge on Sunday. “We’re going to film the classic cars driving through historic parts of Pasadena,” Baxter said. “We don’t want people gathering, but if people are sitting on their front porches, they can check out the cars going by their homes. It’s a tribute to having vintage cars at the party.” On Monday, best-selling author Chip Jacobs will give a lecture on the bridge’s history. The Bridge Task Force will discuss the proposed fencing on Tuesday. “Chip Jacobs, he’s a well-known writer who wrote the novel, ‘Arroyo,’” she said. “He’ll talk about the research he did on the bridge, which plays a pivotal role in the book. “As for Tuesday, we’ll have a panel discussion about the Colorado Street Bridge and the fencing, which is a big community discussion point. We’re going to hear the suggestions so residents can feel more involved and educated about the bridge and the fencing option.” Wednesday architect and structural engineer Chris Peck will join viewers for storytime and hands-on bridge-building activity geared toward children. Ticket holders will receive the pieces needed for the activity. Sponsors will be treated to an exclusive talk from renowned artist Kenton Nelson on Thursday. “Thursday is mostly a sponsor-only

event,” Baxter said. “This is going to be quite the experience.” The weekend kicks off on Friday with a virtual happy hour and trivia with Bridge Party favorite Eagle Rock Brewery. Finally, on Saturday, Pasadena Heritage will broadcast a special video on the Colorado Street Bridge. Detailed information about each event can be found at pasadenaheritage.org/ bridgecelebration. Tickets are $20 for members and $25 for nonmembers. Corporate and individual sponsorships are also available. The Colorado Street Bridge is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has been threatened numerous times. For the last 43 years, Pasadena Heritage has been its leading champion. After many years of effort, the Bridge was saved, seismically upgraded and restored to its original grandeur – a feat that is celebrated with this community event. Proceeds will support Pasadena Heritage’s ongoing work to preserve and protect Pasadena’s architectural treasures, including the iconic Colorado Street Bridge! During better times, the party is held at Defenders Park with a live band on the bridge and in the park, a children’s area, a drum circle and other kids’ activities. “We have other local organizations come and set up, too,” she said. “The fire department comes with a firetruck and the kids can go and ask questions and climb on the truck. We’ve done other things in the past with telescopes on the bridge to check out the night sky. We’ve had a dance party. It depends on the year. “But this should be a fun week of activities.” Pasadena Heritage works to identify, preserve and protect the historic, architectural and cultural resources of the city of Pasadena through advocacy and education. n

PASADENA SHOWCASE HOUSE PIVOTS TO VIRTUAL TOUR

P

asadena Showcase House of Design will go virtual, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and associated restrictions. Ticketholders will have the chance to take a virtual walk through the renovated home at their leisure starting October 2. “Ultimate Viewpoints: 56” is an interactive program that will be enriched with designer interviews and insights. Tickets will go on sale to the general public in September. “Particularly in today’s environment, we are pleased to offer our supporters the ability to experience the sumptuous and aspirational design of the showcase house from the comfort and safety of their homes,” said Vikki Sung, Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts president. PSHA officials hoped to open the doors this fall, but continued government restrictions on large gatherings made it impossible. “This is not a decision that was taken lightly,” Sung said. “It’s the first time in showcase history that we are not able to open our traditional home tour but the health and safety of our visitors, designers, vendors and members are utmost in our thoughts.” This year’s benefit chairwoman, Jill Fosselman, expressed her sincere appreciation. “We are so grateful for the loyalty and ongoing support that we have received to date and really want to bring a full experience to our entire showcase family,” Fosselman said. “We hope our current ticketholders will stand with us as we roll-out a new approach to this challenge that will be every bit as amazing as being there firsthand.” PSHA officials are eager to show off the creativity and talents of the 2020 designers. In production, “Ultimate Viewpoints: 56” highlights the renovated 6 PASADENA WEEKLY | 08.06.20

federal-country style home, designed by “Hollywood Society’s Architect” Gerard R. Colcord. The interactive tour will allow viewers to also click on video links to learn about a designer’s insight or get additional design information. Viewers can “walk through” the house as many times as they wish. An interactive digital program will also be included with the tour. Much like many other nonprofits that have been challenged during this time, PSHA has developed an alternative that is creative and fun to raise funds to fulfill its mission of providing music and art programs throughout the community. PSHA will also offer the Showcase Strong auction, for which bidding will be open from August 17 to August 31. Items will include luxury Southern California getaways, a fine array of jewelry, vacations, furnishings, gifts, wine and other services. Check out the items at bit.ly/ShowcaseStrong. PSHA has raised more than $23 million from the Pasadena Showcase House of Design, PSHA’s only fundraiser. Money has gone to support the organization’s three music programs, Music Mobile, Youth Concert and Instrumental Competition. Each year PSHA awards gifts and grants to a diverse list of local nonprofit organizations in support of their efforts in the community for music and arts. PSHA also underwrites concerts. Its support of nonprofit organizations enriches the community and provides opportunities for a variety of groups, from students to seniors, to learn, enjoy and grow from their experiences in these programs. In addition, PSHA has long supported the Los Angeles Philharmonic and its community outreach programs. THE NEW NORMAL BOBBY’S PLACE: AN ODE TO THE SPUDERITO STORY BY FRIER MCCOLLISTER | PHOTOS BY LUIS CHAVEZ

T

wenty weeks is five months. We stopped counting officially a few weeks ago now, but this is the 20th installment of “The New Normal,” the title assigned to this dining coverage, as of the advent of lockdown. We had no idea in the middle of March that August would be looming in deep summer with no end in sight to the uncertainty caused by the pandemic, the lockdown and the mutating restrictions for restaurants and diners. On the occasion of this issue, I checked in on some of the places covered prior to the lockdown to gauge how they were faring. Pillow Talk (PW January 15) closed in March when the lockdown ensued but reopened at the end of May. Its delicious Japanese-style “sandos,” as well as an expanded list of flavored tea concoctions, are still take-out only. The refectory at Fuller Seminary (PW January 30) remains closed along with the rest of campus. Fuller spokesman Britt Vaughn suggests that they may be back in August for limited cafeteria service. Namaste Spiceland (PW February 19) remained open as a grocery and went to takeout for its rotating selection of South Indian vegetarian specialties and chaat-style snacks. It recently staked out a portion of its parking lot to add distanced outdoor seating for 20 diners. Porky’s Pitstop (PW March 5) is still serving Dena Freestyle barbecue but not from the kitchens of the Monta Factory, which is still thriving. Pitmaster Arsen Arabyan hopes to return to Washington Boulevard in the coming months but in the meantime makes his artisanal ribs and pulled pork available for delivery only. Yes, his mom still makes the fried cauliflower. Finally, Me + Crepe is still open on Green Street but with a revised schedule of hours serving its delectable and savory Beijing-style jianbing rolled crepes. I recall chatting with owner Elena Yi just days before the lockdown. I had expressed my naïve belief that the immediate response to the virus seemed an overreaction. She quite emphatically insisted that, from her perspective, informed by her relatives in China, we were woefully underreacting. Of course,

she was right. Twenty weeks later, stand by your standbys and support the places you love. Seek out and support what makes our town unique. In this spirit, we arrive at Bobby’s Place, an unassuming storefront on Lake Avenue, just south of Walnut, next to the Ralph’s parking lot. Bobby’s Place has occupied this particular spot for the last six years, but it actually represents an impressive ongoing local legacy of 56 years and counting. That legacy began when Ralph and Mary Lou Fonzo opened Rick’s Burgers on the corner of Walnut and El Molino on January 1, 1964. A burger stand also serving tacos and burritos, Rick’s built an unshakeable loyal clientele over decades. As detailed in these pages at the time, in 2007, a real estate developer bought up the block with the intention of building a condominium complex. A long seven-year battle ensued, as the developer’s plans were repeatedly challenged and delayed. In 2011, Rick’s long-time general manager Bobby Ramirez bought Rick’s from the Fonzo family with the promise of a name change. As Bobby recalled recently, he hadn’t thought of a new name until the final health inspection. The inspector asked for the new name as he signed off on approval. “Bobby’s Place” was the spontaneous, impulsively appropriate choice. Though demolition loomed within a month of the changeover, more delays persisted, and Bobby’s Place did not ultimately relocate to its present location until 2014. Bobby maintained Rick’s menu and fanbase, while occasionally adding items of his own invention. As local culinary icons go, The Spuderito might not command the slavish devotion of Roma Market’s The Sandwich but it is a venerable and unique local delicacy that can only be found at Bobby’s Place. While no one is sure when it first appeared on the Rick’s menu, The Spuderito is the original creation of Ralph Fonzo and it remains as much an emblem for Bobby’s Place as it was for Rick’s Burgers. GOTTA HAVE ART

PASADENA SENIOR CENTER CONTINUES ITS ART EXHIBIT—ONLINE BY CHRISTINA FUOCO-KARASINSKI

T

he Pasadena Senior Center is continuing its exhibition of watercolor and digital artworks by students ages 55 to 95 online due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The skill levels range from beginner to advanced. During the pandemic, art classes have been conducted online via Zoom. The online exhibition of nearly 70 artworks can be seen at pasadenaseniorcenter.org (click on the first painting to start the slideshow). Some of the paintings may be purchased, and a portion of the proceeds will benefit programs and services of the Pasadena Senior Center. “I have noticed the courage it has taken for many of the students to stay motivated and keep painting during the pandemic,” said Barbara Medford, the instructor. “These are very special and talented artists. Some students chose pandemic-inspired themes.” Although it has been impossible for the students to meet regularly at the center in an art studio setting to create their works, Medford added it has been important for them to continue the classes through Zoom technology to maintain communication. “We have become an art family and need to support each other,” she said. The center, at 85 E. Holly Street, is an independent, donor-supported nonprofit organization that has been deemed an essential service provider for older adults by the city of Pasadena, so its doors are open five days a week during the pandemic for social services and other assistance to older adults in need. Hours during this period are Mondays through Fridays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Info: artbar333@aol.com or pasadenaseniorcenter.org. n 8 PASADENA WEEKLY | 08.06.20

French fries tangled in molten webs of jack cheese and dolloped with mild thick red salsa, The Spuderito is as much a carb bomb as it is a novel and tasty snack indigenous to Pasadena. At $4.15, it’s also a bargain. Looking for additional novelty? Taco on a Bun ($4.65) features chopped carne asada, onions, cilantro, lettuce and tomato on a toasted hamburger bun. It’s more substantial than a street-style taco and delivers its own peculiar charm, though I’m not giving up tacos. On my second visit in a week, I find myself in an extended and entertaining chat with Bobby. Ebulliently voluble and cheerfully gregarious, Bobby extolls the virtues of one his own inventions: the breakfast taco. Fried egg, cheese and chopped fresh jalapeno, topped with a slap of mild salsa and bundled into a small street-style tortilla, the breakfast taco delivers a satisfying meld of texture and taste with the hot crunch of the peppers playing against the comforting pillow of egg and cheese. It’s also a taco, so it has to be good. When I ask about the breakfast taco tradition of San Antonio, Bobby delivers a mildly withering glance and simply says, “I’ve never been to Texas.” Please make no mistake, this breakfast taco is a Bobby’s original. Priced at $3.65 for two or $5.80 for four, again only in Pasadena. Bobby’s Place has stayed open for takeout throughout the lockdown, though the on-site crew has been reduced from an average of five to two and it’s now breakfast and lunch only 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Bobby laments the loss of his usual workday lunch crowd. “Without these businesses across the street? You’re toast.” He goes on, “Rick’s crowd is everything right now. We see more of the old school people. Now that it’s slower you can hang out and holler at them.” Indeed, two ladies, long-time regulars, enter from the front and Bobby “hollers” a warm salutation, as we chat. He occasionally considers retiring. “I’m tired… (but) I start thinking about the people. It’s like an extended family.” He goes on to relate the story of a customer, who began coming to Rick’s as a 5-year-old boy, every year on his birthday. “Now he comes here with his 5-year-old. I love the people.” Whether it’s tacos for breakfast or the fabled Spuderito, join the family at Bobby’s Place and feel the love. POST-SCRIPT: Perry’s Joint (PW Cover July 18) is sponsoring its annual scholarship day from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, August 9. CONTINUING THE CONVERSATION AION TRAINING RAISES $8K FOR THE FIGHT AGAINST RACIAL INEQUALITY BY CHRISTINA FUOCO-KARASINSKI

s a Black male, Marcus McDuffie wants to help change racist points of view. He spoke with members of his Pasadena-based gym, Aion Training, about his feelings. McDuffie also volunteered for Young & Healthy, which helps children who are without health care. Still, he yearned to do more. McDuffie teamed up with the American Civil Liberties Union to raise funds through a charity workout—with social distancing—in Liberty Park to help with the fight against racial inequality. “We did the fundraiser right in the midst of everything that was happening,” he said. “The protests were at their highest. The pandemic was getting worse. “I wanted to contribute to the change we want to see. I couldn’t see myself as someone directly protesting, so I was talking to people and educating people through conversation.” McDuffie hoped to raise $500. He collected $8,100. “My members completely ran away with it,” McDuffie said. “We initially organically raised $2,025 on our own. Then, one of my members, her company was triple matching. She chose us as a beneficiary. “I was shaken by it. I couldn’t believe we had the power to raise this much with only 60 or 70 members. My members are just honestly always carrying about stuff besides themselves.” McDuffie grew up in the Riverside area and said it was “impossible” not to be affected by racism. Little things like lyrics and glances took up his mental space. “You don’t get used to it, but you become aware of it,” McDuffie said. He attended high school in Moreno Valley with 4,000 other teens. After graduating, he studied kiniesology at Occidental College, which brought him to Pasadena. “I played football there for three years and then quit to do physical

training,” he said. “It shaped a lot of what I learned. I do think that contributes to what’s happening in the world. I’m a little more educated in certain areas and able to talk to my clients and have them understand it.” In January 2019, he founded Aion Training, a Pasadena gym for those 40 and older. While prioritizing community, care and form, Aion Training offers various forms of personalized training services, athletic boot camps and nutrition consulting in-person and online. Aion Training separates itself from its competitors by focusing on longlasting, lifelong, personalized results to ensure that each client leaves feeling lean and pain-free. Charity workouts are nothing new for Aion Training, as they are a staple at the gym following previous fundraisers for No Kid Hungry, Thorn, Angel Tree and Young & Healthy. “We’ve created an awesome culture,” McDuffie said. “We’re not just going to be people who are just obsessed with the gym. We’re focused on the community outside of the gym. A couple of my members are meeting up at a food bank. We’re more than just people who go to the gym and lift weights.” And McDuffie is continuing the conversation with his clients. “With my position, people listen to me,” said McDuffie, a member of the NAACP. “I talk about what I’ve been through. It’s been awesome to have this platform. My clients have talked with their friends about these things. They continue to have conversations.” n

ARTIST’S SHOW IS INSPIRED BY ALBERT CAMUS POEM BY KAMALA KIRK

South Pasadena artist Anne-Elizabeth Sobieski and Plan:d Gallery owner Edwina Dedlow have partnered for the virtual art show “Invincible Summer.”

or years, a Post-It note with a quote scribbled on it from French philosopher Albert Camus’ “Invincible Summer” poem remained stuck to the edge of Anne-Elizabeth Sobieski’s computer screen. The quote reads: “I realized, through it all, that in the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer.” Years later, that quote has become the inspiration for the South Pasadena artist’s upcoming art show dubbed “Invincible Summer.” “I keep that note to remind me that no matter what is happening around me, there is always the opportunity to dig deep and show up to life in a beautiful way,” Sobieski said. “The word ‘summer’ brings imagery to my mind that is full of sunshine and joy. Being that 2020 has been loaded with incredible challenges for all of us, this quote seemed to fit the idea of resilience and making an effort to show up in whatever ways we can.” “Invincible Summer” is on display at Plan:d Gallery in Los Angeles and will run from August 5 to September 5. To adapt to COVID-19, a smaller group of works are available and will be presented online and by appointment only. Sobieski partnered with Edwina Dedlow, the gallery’s co-owner and curator, whom she met 26 years ago on the Hathaway-Sycamores El Nido campus, a home for abused boys in Pasadena. “She was the head of volunteer services and I was a volunteer art teacher,” Sobieski said. “I was drawn to Edwina’s dynamic energy and generous approach to life. A fast friendship was formed.” The idea for the show came up during a discussion between the longtime friends, who were reminiscing over how they met, how they came to be reunited, as well as the pandemic and art. “I collect art and I have tons of artist friends,” Dedlow said. “Once I sold my business, I decided to open a gallery. Anne-Elizabeth and I talked continuously about doing something together. In these wretched times, we were both trying to have an ‘invincible summer.’ A vision, a place where beauty abounds and where for one short minute, we could escape. These thoughts became this virtual show. Her pieces are available online for sale and I will take one-on-one appointments at the gallery. Everyone will wear masks and hand sanitizer will be available.” All 12 of Sobieski’s works on display feature oil-on-linen canvas. They depict a variety of subject matter, including floral and botanical scenes, butterflies, and young boys with dogs and horses. Of the two framed paper pieces, one is oil and the other is a charcoal drawing. “The words in this show speak to the undeniable life force within and around us,” Sobieski said. “To navigate the darkness and fight the light, to commit to life’s vitality and continue to show up each day that we are given is what I see in these works. They are optimistic and resilient. They offer a vibrant immediacy and psychic presence, are open and sincere in their tone. The surface of the linen is loaded with crystalline colors and rich paint punctuation. There is a gentle tug between image and the formal application of paint for paint’s sake. The drawings are earnest and imperfect, capturing the vulnerability of the unguarded. The floral paintings are lyrical compositions of harmony and action, while the figures breathe with the tender affection of the viewer. These pieces remind me of what artist Philip Guston once said about painting: “It’s a long, long preparation for a few moments of innocence.” n

OUMOU SANGARÉ, Acoustic (No Format): HHH½

A stripped-down redo of the Malian diva’s 2017 album “Mogoya,” with guitar, ngoni, and hand percussion supplanting the original recording’s electric instrumentation. “Kamelemba” exchanges instrumental build for slightly more hypnotic rhythms; this version of the funky “Fadjamou” mellows the groove, while the title track’s swaying cadence benefits from acoustic treatment, stripping away synthesizer effects to allow Sangaré’s expressive vocals and guitarist Guimba Kouyate’s intuitive fretwork to carry the mood. Sangaré’s socially conscious themes and trademark call-and-response harmonies remain, true to her Wassoulou traditions, though they sound more organic here (especially during “Mali Niale”), like real women gathered together. facebook.com/ oumousangareofficiel

GORDI, Our Two Skins (Jagjaguwar): HHHH

CARY MORIN, Dockside Saints (self-released): HHHH

Opening with the New Orleans-flavored “Nobody Gotta Know,” the Colorado guitarist and songwriter displays the range of his “Native Americana” with vibey support from accordionist Corey Ledet and fiddler Beau Thomas and songs ranging from bluesy grooves to atmospheric instrumentals (the lovely “Bare Trees”), Southern gospel, and historyhaunted narratives (“Chosen Road,” “Valley of the Chiefs,” inspired by his Crow family heritage). Morin’s evocative acoustic and slide playing and earthy vocal delivery position him on fertile terrain, somewhere between Malcolm Holcombe’s shamanistic intensity and Van Morrison’s gruff soul. carymorin.com

NAIMA SHALHOUB, Siphr (self-released): HHH

Australian singer-songwriter Sophie Payten negotiates isolation and questions of sexual identity and relationship throughout this spare yet commanding follow-up to 2017’s “Reservoir.” Intimacy and distance stare each other down during tense six-minute opener “Aeroplane Bathroom,” a melodic piano ballad that sets up the losses and discoveries that follow (“I’m wondering why I haven’t seen myself before/ In naked lights and sleepless nights/ … the contents of my chest are down there on the floor”). “Unready” and “Sandwiches” kick up the pace with bright pop arrangements and thrumming electronics, but hushed ballads such as “Volcanic” (“Am I burning us out to keep your interests piqued”) make the strongest impact. RIYL Phoebe Bridgers, Bon Iver, Imogen Heap. gordisounds.tumblr.com

The Bay Area artist’s 2015 album “Live in San Francisco County Jail” focused on inspirational folk and gospel and social justice anthems; her first studio album likewise works with American and Middle Eastern folk forms, albeit on a more expansive musical canvas stretched out by cellist Ed Baskerville, bassist Marcus Shelby, and especially oudist/lead guitarist/percussionist Tarik Kazaleh aka Excentrik. Singing in Arabic and English, Shalhoub nimbly navigates blues, jazz and folk rhythms while tracing borders and connections between beliefs, cultures and heritages through nine interlinked tracks. The most potent — “Two (Rivers in the Desert),” “Four (Roumieh Prison Blues),” “Six (Distraction Suite)” — are those where stringed instruments and Kazaleh’s frame drum conjure environments both compelling and transporting. Naimashalhoub.com

KAMAAL WILLIAMS, Wu Hen (Black Focus): HHH

COURTNEY MARIE ANDREWS, Old Flowers (Fat Possum): HHHH

After breaking through as one half of widely acclaimed South London jazz duo Yussef Kamaal, keyboardist/ producer Williams teams with LA-based Katalyst drummer Greg Paul and a smooth combo for his sophomore solo outing. Rather than the ’70s fusion flavors of Williams’ 2018 solo debut “The Return” or the streetwise sense of rhythmic discovery of Yussef Kamaal, “Wu Hen” colors its esoteric jazz palette with funk and R&B. Emotional hooks are supplied by distinctive contributions from string player Miguel Atwood-Ferguson and saxophonist Quinn Mason (notably during “Pigalle,” which sounds like an afterhours jam, and the meditative “Early Prayer”), though overall it sounds more exploratory than focused. kamaalwilliams.com

THE NAKED AND FAMOUS, Recover (Somewhat Damaged): HHH

The New Zealand-raised, LA-based duo’s fourth album finds Alisa Xayalith and Thom Powers turning away from the crunchy drums of previous releases into even sleeker synth-pop sounds. Purportedly intended at least in part to be an agent of healing, the album sets lyrics addressing depression, survival and loss — of childhood, of a parent, of expectations and relationships — against hooky melodies and pumpedup production that promise acceptance but sometimes smother hopeful messages. Highlights: the selfempowering title track, “Come as You Are,” “Death,” “The Sound of My Voice.” thenakedandfamous.com

The restless singer-songwriter’s seventh album sustains the emotional integrity and compositional excellence of 2016’s “Honest Life” and 2018’s “May Your Kindness Remain,” extracting cathartic beauty from heartbreak bandaged in image-rich lyrics and simple country-folk melodies and arrangements. Standout tracks such as “Burlap String,” “Together or Alone” and piano-centered tearjerker “How You Get Hurt” feel like old friends, the kind who’ll commiserate deep into the late hours when memories stir and sympathetic ears get you through the night. courtneymarieandrews.com

PAUL KELLY & PAUL GRABOWSKY, Please Leave the Light On (Cooking Vinyl): HHH½

Beloved Australian songwriter Kelly and celebrated jazz pianist Grabowsky salute inspiring icons — Tony Bennett and Bill Evans, Frank Sinatra and Nelson Riddle — throughout this elegantly produced set. Grabowsky ramps up the rhythmic playfulness of Kelly’s “Sonnet 138” (reprised from his Shakespearean 2016 EP “Seven Sonnets & a Song”) and responds to the title track’s yearning with restrained finesse, while Kelly’s rhythmic, interpretive phrasing and exquisite opener “True to You” (the only new Kelly song) beg for more jazzy explorations. paulkelly.com.au, paulgrabowsky. com.au
