Left-wing Professor Peter Dreier and the militant organization Pasadenans Organizing For Progress proclaim that the overwhelming majority of local residents want rent control, based on a poll of 700 people (“Tenants and Homeowners Agree: Pasadena Needs Rent Control,” Aug. 1, 2019). “Pasadena is ripe for tenant activism,” writes Dreier. “In fact, it has already begun, which isn’t surprising, given the magnitude of the housing crisis.” Dreier ignores the fact that affordable housing disappeared after decades of massive, poorly controlled immigration, legal or otherwise. California recently passed the 40 million mark and is projected to have 65 million people by the year 2050. How can we build affordable housing for another 25 million people? In spite of a budget surplus, Gov. Gavin Newsom stated, “Proposition 13 is on the table” (read: chopping block). Worse, Democratic lawmakers, emboldened by their super-majority, produced a laundry list of proposed Assembly and Senate constitutional amendments that would, all or in part, reduce the threshold for parcel taxes from a two-thirds majority to 55 percent. The biggest threat to hard-pressed property owners is a constitutional amendment (which qualified for the 2020 ballot) that would base property taxes on the assessed market value rather than the purchase price — the catalyst for a tax revolt in 1978. Before angry tenants flood the streets like torch-wielding villagers in “Frankenstein,” they should remember that they could get slammed by rent increases or wind up in rent-controlled
slums if property taxes double or triple. ~ LES HAMMER PASADENA Over the last 10 years in my capacity as a preservation consultant I have had three clients who were looking to buy homes to restore and use as art or music studios in historic previously rundown Los Angeles neighborhoods. They had long been priced out of their Pasadena hometown. Off we would go inspecting and analyzing houses and rough estimates of costs to make them safe and habitable at American middle class standards. Reports would be written, I would estimate the completed value, and recommend a range for bidding on the house. My clients would always way overbid and yet always lose those bids. In each case, eventually a real estate agent would sit them down and tell them that if they wanted to live in this neighborhood they would have to be renters, because the agent was representing consortiums of offshore investors who instructed him to make the last bid no matter what. I found them other neighborhoods, and those now
too are undergoing this process of foreign investment. Much but not all of this investment is being undertaken for or by people getting EB5 visas to enter the US. By investing $500,000 into a real estate project investors can jump the immigration line and get on a faster track to citizenship while here. That’s good for them. It’s been tragic for working class and poor people in the Los Angeles area as their traditional neighborhoods have become hotbeds of offshore investment, rising rents, gentrification and displacement. No one will talk about it, but this situation is a major driver of homelessness in our area. But there is an answer: We can reform the EB5 visa. We could insist that the EB5 visa no longer be a tool of real estate speculation but insist that the visa holder place $750,000 for the fi rst family member and an additional $250,000 for each additional entering family member into a bond pool that will build Section 8 housing, sewerage infrastructure, shield wildland electrical lines and provide other needed infrastructure maintenance. In this way, wealthy immigrants jumping the immigration line will at least be providing money to ameliorate the impacts they are causing. ~ STEVEN S. GEORGE TAKEI SEES HISTORY REPEATING IN NEW BOOK AND TV FILM AS U.S. OFFICIALS CONTINUE TEARING FAMILIES APART Actor George Takei — Cmdr. Sulu from the old “Star Trek” franchise who on Tuesday at Vroman’s Bookstore is releasing “They Called Us Enemy,” a graphic novel based on his family’s experience of being rounded up and shipped off to a detention camp — could not have scheduled a more apropos time to launch his book. The Los Angeles native said such “camps” were actually prisons that contained lookout towers manned by sentries armed with machine guns. His family’s “detention center” was located in a town in Arkansas, where they were forced to stay for four years. Much as it was for Takei in his youth, the immediate future for four young children presently growing up in Mississippi is anything but certain. With her father, Andres Gomez-Jorge, taken from her last week by ICE agents, 11-year-old Magdalena, her mom and three younger siblings may not be able to afford to live where they are. If Andres doesn’t come back, and indications are he may not, or if Magdalena’s mom, Juana, doesn’t fi nd work, the little girl’s family may be forced to head to Guatemala, something CNN reports no one in the family really wants to do. This is one form of family separation. Similar kinds are occurring at the country’s southern border, where children taken from their parents are driven to detention centers, much like the ones used to intern Japanese Americans imprisoned following Imperial Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor, launching America’s involvement in World War II in 1941. While Magdalena may be safe for now, hundreds of other children her age and younger are being separated from their parents, some occupying cages set up by the US government. As of Tuesday, CNN reports Magdalena’s father — along with nearly 400 workers at food processing plants in that part of the state — was among those who had not returned home after 680 people were whisked away by federal immigration officials on suspicion of being in the US without proper documentation. “I feel very powerless. I don’t have a job, only my husband works. I’m thinking, what am I going to do?” Juana, Magdalena’s mother, told CNN. She told reporters that her husband and she came here more than a decade ago. All the kids were born here. Andres, she said, “didn’t come here to rob anybody. He came here to work. It is out of necessity.” For 82-year-old Takei, who was 5 at the time that he and his family were taken into custody by US troops, the parallels between what’s happening at the southern border in particular and around the country in general and the devastation wrought upon his family and other Japanese Americans are inescapable. In fact, his hope is to reach young people, his intended audience for the graphic novel, with the lessons learned from his experiences as a youngster in the early 1940s. “With ‘Enemy,’ my hope is we’re going to get young people to get this information and grow up knowing this story,” Takei said in a recent interview with PW Arts Editor Carl Kozlowski (For more on Carl’s interview with Takei, please see page 10). “I’m always shocked when I’m in conversation with people I consider wellread, and they’re shocked and can’t believe such a thing happened in the US,” said Takei. “Because we have adults who don’t know this history and this outrage is going on on the southern border, we’ve got to get Americans outraged at this endless cycle of cruelty to minorities.” Takei is also acting in and consulting on a World Wat II drama about the internment, “The Terror: Infamy,” airing Mondays on AMC. “I had an infant baby sister, a brother who was 4, and I was 5 when we were locked up because we looked the same as those who bombed. This country vilified us and made the decision we were potential spies, saboteurs and needed to be locked up,” Takei told Carl. “For us, due process and trials disappeared. I remember when soldiers stomped into our orchard and banged on our front door and literally were ordered out of our home in Los Angeles. My father gave my brother little packages to carry and had big suitcases and my mom came out with my baby sister on one arm, a huge duffel bag in the other and tears streaming down her cheeks. I’ll never forget that memory.” With all that said, one has to wonder: Have we turned from being a nation of human rights into one of inhumane wrongs? Magdalena’s mother told reporters this week that she hasn’t slept since her husband was detained. “I don’t know where he is,” she told CNN. “We don’t know if he’s dead or alive.” ■ 6 PASADENA WEEKLY | 08.15.19

PASADENANS CALL FOR GUN CONTROL AND IMMIGRATION REFORM AT A VILLA PARKE VIGIL FOR THE VICTIMS OF RECENT MASS SHOOTINGS BY JUSTIN CHAPMAN

mericans across the country are demanding action on gun violence and white supremacist extremism, which has manifested in a decidedly anti-immigrant flare. On Wednesday, Aug. 14, activists marched from All Saints Church to the Richard H. Chambers US Court of Appeals in West Pasadena to protest the Trump administration’s arguments to cancel the Temporary Protected Status for immigrants from six countries. On Aug. 7, about 300 people mourned the victims of the recent mass shootings in Gilroy, El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, during a candlelit vigil at Villa Parke in Northwest Pasadena. And during an interfaith panel discussion on white supremacy on Aug. 5 at All Saints, Congressman Adam Schiff (D-Pasadena) said Gilroy, El Paso and Dayton weren’t just the latest mass shootings; they were acts of domestic terrorism. Increasingly, national security experts are concerned about the rise of this farright extremism in the United States. “There is no escaping the clear and present danger of white supremacist violence in the United States and the terrible urgency to confront it,” said Schiff. “Simply put, it’s domestic terrorism. Acts of unspeakable violence motivated by a hateful ideology which justifies them as a means to an end. It shouldn’t be hard or controversial to say that. After all, if the shooter in El Paso was Muslim, is there any question how the president would describe

him?” Schiff said the FBI is currently conducting 850 active domestic terrorism investigations. “People are now feeling free to express themselves in the most hateful of ways because they hear the president doing it and don’t see an outcry,” Schiff added. Some Democratic presidential candidates have called Trump himself a racist and a white supremacist. The 21-year-old El Paso shooter, who drove 10 hours on Aug. 3 to kill 22 people and injure 24 in a Walmart, told law enforcement officials that he was specifically targeting Mexicans. He also used language in his manifesto that echoed President Trump’s antiimmigrant rhetoric, such as calling immigrants “invaders.” It was the largest anti-Latino shooting in modern American history. The Latino community across the country feels under attack. Other countries are now issuing travel warnings to their citizens about the United States. Mexico vowed to take legal action against the United States for failing to protect the eight Mexican nationals who were killed in El Paso. ‘Enough is Enough’ “The events of this weekend show how vulnerable we are in Pasadena,” Jennipha-Lauren Nielsen, who organized the Villa Parke vigil, wrote on the event webpage. “We must remain strong in our

A former Irvine deputy police chief who currently works as a consultant said the arrest of a 23-year old Altadena man brutalized following a traffic stop by the Pasadena gang unit was a “racially motivated pretext stop that went sideways.” Jeffrey Noble has been retained as an expert witness by local attorney John Burton, who represents Christopher Ballew in a civil rights lawsuit filed in federal court against the city, the department and the two officers involved in the incident. Ballew suffered contusions to his head and a broken leg after he was struck repeatedly with fists and a police baton during a traffic stop in November 2017. A portion of the encounter was captured on a cellphone camera by a passerby who later posted it to Facebook. After examining 197 field interview cards completed by the gang unit, or Special Services Section, Burton claims he found a disturbing trend of racial profiling that led Noble to his conclusion, which is contained in a declaration taken by Burton. According to a profile in the Orange County Register at the time of his retirement in 2012, Noble is a 1985 Medal of Valor winner who has a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Cal State, Long Beach, and a juris doctorate from Western State University College of Law. He is the author of “Managing Accountability Systems for Police Conduct: Internal Affairs and External Oversights,” and has written numerous articles for various law enforcement periodicals and journals. According to Burton’s data, 43 Hispanic and 31 African-American motorists were told to get out of their cars during traffic stops in 2016, 2017 and the first half of 2018, while information about them was recorded by officers on field interview cards. Only one white motorist was removed from their vehicle and subjected to a field interview during that time period. Fifteen of the people told to get out of their cars and sit on a curb while their vehicles were searched were arrested. “You have to take it into a broader perspective other than just the numbers,” said Pasadena police spokesman Cmdr. Jason Clawson. “You have to consider the level of gun violence that year, the number of guns we recovered. There are a lot of factors involved, including the gang unit’s mission.” (For an expanded version of this story, visit pasadenaweekly.com)

commitment against white supremacy. That is El Paso’s strength. Nothing will change that. Today, we must reaffirm our commitment to that strength. And we must redouble our commitment to defeat the vile worldview of white supremacy.” The Villa Parke vigil was sponsored by the Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services (RAICES) and the National Day Laborer Organizing Network (NDLON). Friends In Deed Executive Director Rabbi Joshua Levine Grater and NDLON Executive Director Pablo Alvarado delivered remarks, in addition to Nielsen. Pasadena Mayor Terry Tornek and his wife Maria were also in attendance, as were District 5 City Council member Victor Gordo and Police Chief John Perez. Peter Dreier, an urban and environmental policy professor at Occidental College, wrote on Facebook that people attended the vigil to “protest white supremacy, mistreatment of immigrants, rampant gun violence and Donald Trump. The crowd was wonderfully diverse by race, ethnicity, age and faith traditions. We sang together in Spanish and English, including Leonard Cohen’s inspiring ‘Hallelujah.’ The next steps will include trips to the border, a march to the federal courthouse in Pasadena and vigils at the local detention center. Si se puede!” The same day as the Pasadena vigil, Aug. 7, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents raided several food processing plants across Mississippi and arrested 680 undocumented workers — but not the managers who hired them — just four days after the El Paso shooter targeted Latinos. It was the largest workplace raid in at least a decade. ICE did not inform Trump about the raid ahead of time, afraid that he would speak publicly about it like he did before other planned raids. This reporter visited the El Paso/Juárez border in March when the arrival of Central American migrants surged to the point where existing detention and housing facilities became overwhelmed. Under the border bridge between Juárez and El Paso, US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) was holding a large number of migrants, including families and children. Despite the hot days and cold nights, they were being forced to sleep in the open air with silver mylar “space” blankets, exposed to the elements. There was also a pair of CBP agents at the middle of the bridge checking documents and turning away asylum seekers before they could reach the physical border where they are allowed to claim asylum. “The hate-filled speeches that incite violence, the criminalizing of entire families and communities and the scandalous collusion of elected officials with hate groups — enough is enough,” wrote Nielsen. ‘Do Something!’ It has become a familiar refrain: after a mass shooting, calls for action on gun control get largely ignored by elected officials. Research from online public opinion firm Civiqs shows that public support for gun control increases after a high-profile shooting, then peters out after a few weeks. But support is steadily increasing, and the hard-line anti-gun control coalition is starting to show some cracks. At a rally in Ohio, a crowd mourning the Dayton victims drowned out the remarks of Republican Gov. Mike DeWine with chants of “Do something! Do something!” Even before the recent shootings, polls showed public support for gun control measures such as universal background checks at about 90 percent. Last week, Trump seemed open to at least exploring background checks and red flag laws, which would authorize law enforcement to take guns away from those a court has deemed a threat to others. Whether he follows through is another matter, as he has changed his position on gun control many times over the past few years. He and other Republicans were quick to blame the violence on video games and mental illness, while other countries also have those but don’t experience routine, horrific shootings as nearly as much as the United States. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky), in a rare reversal of his usual stance, said background checks would be “front and center” when the Senate reconvenes in September. He did not, however, call the Senate back into session this month to tackle the issue, which many consider a national emergency. The Democratic-led House of Representatives passed a gun control measure in February, but it has been held up in the Senate by McConnell ever since. Meanwhile, the National Rifle Association (NRA) is in a tailspin. Its president, Oliver North, was pushed out earlier this year by its long-time CEO Wayne LaPierre, who is being criticized by its board of directors and members for lavish spending and mismanaging finances. Infighting has also recently led to the shuttering of the organization’s controversial NRATV station and the severing of ties with its long-time PR firm Ackerman McQueen and its top lobbyist, Christopher Cox, who was seen as LaPierre’s successor. The Washington Post reported last week that Trump has been asking aides whether the NRA is as powerful as it used to be and whether it can push back as hard if the White House were to pursue stronger gun control measures. Time will tell if the NRA still has the clout to hold off the public’s growing demands for action against the epidemic of gun violence. Next Steps Villa Parke will be the location of another upcoming event, a “Support Immigrant Rights” rally from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 22. The sponsors of this rally include St. Philip’s Church, Lake Avenue Church, Adelante Youth Center, NDLON, Pasadena Jewish Temple and Center’s Social Justice Committee and Day One. The themes of the rally are “Bridges Not Walls” and “Sanctuary Not Detention,” with the goal of showing “solidarity with immigrants and refugees, including about 50 families now in Pasadena.” Immigration attorneys will be on site and people can either sign up to support immigrant rights or contribute to a legal defense fund for immigrant families. n 08.15.19 | PASADENA WEEKLY 9
Demons Past and Present GEORGE TAKEI SHINES A SPOTLIGHT ON THE SIMILARITIES BETWEEN TODAY’S BORDER DETENTIONS AND THE DARK HISTORY OF JAPANESE-AMERICAN INTERNMENT CAMPS BY CARL KOZLOWSKI
A
s chief helmsman Sulu on the iconic TV and movie series “Star Trek,” George Takei has enjoyed a thriving acting career for more than 50 years. Yet he’s lived a full life beyond that sci-fi classic, with more than 200 roles in his career, in addition to being an outspoken political voice on behalf of LGBT rights and against President Trump. It’s remarkable that the 82-year-old Takei has managed to keep an upbeat attitude and active lifestyle throughout the decades, considering that he and his family were subjected to the horrific injustices of the Japanese-American internment camps during World War II. He is looking back at his experiences in the camps with two new and intriguing projects: the graphic novel “They Called Us Enemy,” as well as the new AMC network miniseries “The Terror: Infamy,” which launches its second season Monday night. Takei, who will be appearing at Vroman’s Bookstore in Pasadena Tuesday night to discuss and sign “Enemy,” recently took some time to share his remarkable stories with the Pasadena Weekly. PW: How did the decision to write “Enemy” come about? GEORGE TAKEI: I wrote an autobiography called ‘To the Stars” in 1994 and it was at one of those book signings that a Japanese American woman came through the line and said she wanted to talk to me after I finished. Her name was Grace Nakamura, and she grabbed me by the shoulders and said, “George, you must do a signing at Vroman’s in Pasadena. I said I’ll go anywhere, but why so intense? Her hands were gripping my shoulders. She said we Japanese Americans have a debt to Vroman’s. She was a survivor of the Manzanar camp in California, while my family were in a camp in Arkansas. She said that Herbert Nicholson, a Quaker man who owned Vroman’s, made a monthly trip to Manzanar with a carload of books from Vroman’s and donated it to the young people there. He went every month on a set date, religiously. Then on one trip he showed them bullet holes on his car. He said he was shot at by rednecks because he was going there. They were obviously people who wanted to discourage him. People at Manzanar said “That’s it, that Vroman’s man isn’t going to be coming anymore.” But sure enough he was back the next week. So my publishers arranged for me to do a signing. I was shocked when the signing was over, I chatted with the employees there and the young people there had no idea of the history of Vroman’s. I told them about Nicholson, and that he didn’t approve of the internment and that was his way of showing support for 10 PASADENA WEEKLY | 08.15.19
Japanese Americans. He also made those trips with troops to two Arizona camps. So it became my mission to tell the story of the camps because so many younger people don’t have any idea about them. Tell me about your family’s story, please. Well, “The Terror: Infamy” refers to President Franklin Roosevelt calling the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor a day of infamy. We Japanese Americans had four years of infamy. My parents were Americans who met and married in Los Angeles. I had an infant baby sister, a brother who was 4, and I was 5 when we were locked up because we looked the same as those who bombed. This country vilified us and made the decision we were potential spies, saboteurs and needed to be locked up. We had Attorney General Earl Warren who went down in history as a liberal Supreme Court justice. Yet he wanted to be California governor and had a dark history. The most popular political issue at the time was the lock up, the Japanese issue, as the hysteria went national. The Attorney General, who knows the Constitution and knows the law, made the statement that we have no evidence of spying, but that’s because they’re inscrutable and can’t tell what they’re thinking behind that emotionless face, so lock them up before they can do anything. The absence of evidence was the evidence. He became governor for three terms and then was appointed chief justice of the US Supreme Court. The whole country, but particularly California with a justice like Warren, was wild with hysteria and racism. It was racism because we were at war with Germans and Italians, but they looked like the majority of Americans, so they were left alone. For us, due process and trials disappeared. I remember when soldiers stomped into our orchard and banged on our front door and literally ordered us out of our home in Los Angeles. My father gave my brother little packages to carry and had big suitcases and my mom came out with my baby sister on one arm, a huge duffel bag in the other and tears streaming down her cheeks. I’ll never forget that memory.
How did you manage to avoid bitterness and hatred after that camp experience and thrive? My childhood defined who I was to become. When you read “Enemy” there’s two parallel stories I tell based on the same experience. I was 5 and wanted to capture the true memory of a 5 year old, and a Southern California kid plopped down in the swamps of Arkansas. It was an exotic place to be. There were trees there and a bayou. Some of the bayou was inside the camp as well. Trees grew out of the water and the roots were hidden in the water. I’d never seen that. There were dragonflies there that I’d never seen here. In the water, were little black wiggly fish that I could scoop in my hand, put in a jar and one day they’d sprout what look like legs, they’d get stronger, their tail falls off and they climbed out of jars. They were just tadpoles turned into frogs. It was a magical place to a 5-year-old kid. It’s drawn like a comic strip, and when you’re comic strip reading age, preteen and teen, you absorb all the information. As a comic strip, I bring the young readership into the story, but then once they get into it I share the larger reality of the harrowing experience of what my parents went through — stripped clean of everything, their business, and then they couldn’t pay the mortgage so their house was lost. For no reason but looking like this. It was a prison camp with barbed wire, with sentry towers and machine guns pointed at us. Searchlights followed me on the run to the latrine at night. My parents found it humiliating, but for a five year old I was thankful they lit the way for me to pee. I could see guards right outside my schoolhouse window as I recited the words “liberty and justice for all.” I totally lost the stinging irony of it. So what do you hope comes from publishing “Enemy”? With “Enemy,” my hope is we’re going to get young people to get this information and grow up knowing this story. I’m always shocked when I’m in conversation with people I consider well-read, and they’re shocked and can’t believe such a thing happened in the US. Because we have adults who don’t know this history and this outrage is going on on the Southern border, we’ve got to get Americans outraged at this endless cycle of cruelty to minorities. In my 1994 autobiography, I thought I was reaching adults but not enough of them. With this graphic memoir, I’m hoping to reach young Americans to be active leaders against things like Trump’s Muslim travel ban. He used the same idea that they’re all potential terrorists, and that is untrue. My dentist is a Muslim. All kinds of people are many different things and to label them all as terrorists is un-American. We live in fraught times, not unlike what happened to Japanese Americans 75 years ago. When I became a teenager, I read civics books about great American ideals. That we were a nation ruled by law, with all men created equal. I couldn’t associate that with my childhood imprisonment. No due process, no charges, no trial. How could that happen to a teenager? After dinner I had discussions with my father and I learned from him. My father was the man in our family who bore the pain, outrage and humiliation the most in our family, and yet he explained to me that our democracy is the people’s democracy and the people have the capacity to do great things. We have noble ideals, but people are also fallible human beings and make mistakes. Our democracy is existentially dependent on people participating. He said every elected official was vilifying us and saying any Japanese person will stab you in the back. Only one elected official back then, governor of Colorado Ralph Carr, said this must stop, it’s unjust. So for that one thing his political career was gone. In a democracy people have to participate in that democracy. ■ George Takei discusses and signs “They Called Us Enemy” at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Vroman’s Bookstore, 695 E. Colorado Blvd., Pasadena. A Dream Come True DINING AT FIORE MARKET CAFÉ IS AN EXPERIENCE TO BE SAVORED BY MICHAEL SPRAGUE PHOTOS BY DANNY LIAO
I
fell in love with Fiore Market Cafe in South Pasadena, and as I researched about the restaurant that left such an impression on me I fell into the love story of Anne and Bill Disselhorst, the couple who opened Fiore in 2010. There is a very wholesome and genuine intimacy to Fiore. I was struck by the feeling of welcoming and comfort on my initial visit, perhaps because of the home style decor and appearance of the kitchen, dining room and surrounding garden space. After leaving, I scoured the Internet and social media to learn anything about this restaurant that captured my attention. From there I fell into the beautiful love story of husband and wife duo Anne and Bill Disselhorst. Thanks to Bill maintaining an under the radar but significant online presence of blog posts and insights into his life, I was fortunate enough to learn the story of Fiore. The Disselhorsts m et as a forbidden romance as Bill was a manager at a restaurant where Anne was a waitress. The couple fell in love, then married and had careers of their own until Bill Continued on Page 14

A DREAM COME TRUE CONTINUED FROM PAGE 13 was laid off in 2010. It was then that they decided to join together in a restaurant once more. Although this time they did it as owners. Bill’s blog posts and early Instagram posts piece together a wholesome scrapbook of a marriage united through their love of culinary traditions learned through family trips to Italy. Through Bill’s blogs on the Fiore website he writes in simple, yet beautiful prose about his wife, the art behind bread making, starting an edible garden, and gives an insight into the early days of Fiore. He summed up their contributions in a post on the day they signed their lease: “Anne has the artistic vision. I have the food vision. Together we plan to meld our imaginations into something really creative and unique.” In 2017 Anne unexpectedly passed away. The couple had been married for 30 years. It was a loss for the family and the South Pasadena community. As Bill wrote in 2010, before Fiore opened, “Tomorrow we begin work on a project that is all ours. It’s our vision and our dream to create a European style cafe with the charm and character of something you would find along the Seine in Paris.” The couple accomplished their goal and was able to watch their dream come to fruition and now it stands as a testament of love and a beautiful romance that came full circle. Bill runs the restaurant, every day fulfilling the goal they set out to accomplish together. Fiore Market Cafe was a spiritual experience that evokes James Taylor songs and picnics. Fiore is intertwined with the Fremont Centre Theatre, filling the exterior of the theater with an edible garden and patio seating. Fiore is a modestly sized space. There seems to be a perpetual line out of the door, partially because the interior dining room is small, but mostly because the experience is worth the wait. There is patio seating and an edible garden under the veranda outside, where they also feature live music every afternoon. The menu is simple enough — baguettes, sandwiches and salads, but all done with a gourmet Italian punch up. All of the breads are made in-house 14 PASADENA WEEKLY | 08.15.19
at Fiore. In fact, homemade bread is the centerpiece of Fiore’s entire menu, and for good reason, as Disselhorst honed the art of bread making before opening the restaurant and then built the menu around the bread. They are committed to serving the bread fresh, meaning you will never get a loaf that was not prepared the same day. The roast chicken sandwich is the perfect summer sandwich with a basil walnut pesto, mayonnaise and burrata cheese ($11). The flavor is nothing too complex, with perfectly roasted chicken that’s never dry, and the creamy burrata meeting its perfect complement with the pesto. Of the mini baguettes, there is the piccolo sopprisotto ($6.50), with bleu cheese and kalamata olives, which essentially rolls up the best parts of a charcuterie tray into a fresh, flavorful, much easier to eat baguette. The daily specials are the secret stars of the menu. On the Tuesday that I visited I was blessed to come on the day the pork belly bahn mi ($11) made its appearance on the specials board. Served with carrots, jalapenos and ginger mayonnaise, the incredible mixture of rich pork belly cut by the acid of the vegetables made for one of the most pleasant sandwiches I could have asked for on a warm summer day. The finer details are the icing on the cake of an already incredible experience. The vegetable and herb garden lining the patio is not only beautiful but filled with gorgeous heirloom edibles that find their way onto the fresh, seasonal menu. Sandwich leftovers can be packaged up with the parchment and twine at one of the utensil and water stations. Cold brew coffees ($3.50) and their homemade lemonade ($3) are served in carafes which is a welcome Italian touch. The dining room and patio make for a beautiful, breezy, casual lunch. Dine-in for the ambiance or take the carefully crafted flavors with you as the absolute quintessential picnic at your next outdoor concert or event. At Fiore Market Café, the care, consideration and love are evident in each detail.

TAKING CUES YOUNG MOTHERS MUST TUNE INTO THEIR BABY’S EMOTIONAL NEEDS Dear Patti, I’m 18 and just gave birth to a baby girl two months ago. I don’t like sounding like the cliché teen mom, but I’m not married and am raising my daughter on my own. My baby girl, Isla, is so beautiful that I could just sit and stare at her for hours. I love her so much. She is everything to me. My childhood was full of abuse. I dated Isla’s father on and off through high school, and he was abusive too. He hit and pushed me several times while I was pregnant and even once after Isla was born. He was never interested in our child, and he seemed jealous and irritated by how much of my focus she took away from him. When Isla was one month old I finally joined a counseling group for young mothers. We were warned that domestic violence and chronic stress exposes babies to a higher level of stress that can cause long-term health problems and can make babies more likely to develop behavioral problems. When I heard that I finally got the courage to end the relationship with Isla’s father. He hasn’t attempted to see the baby since we broke up. At first I was scared to be on my own but I love to cook and becoming a chef is a dream of mine. I arranged to go to cooking school only three days a week so I can be home with my daughter as much as possible. I’m still worried about my baby, though. I’m wondering if there’s anything I can do to offset the trauma she’s already experienced in my womb and her first month of life? I don’t want her to go through childhood accepting negativity from others like I did. I want her to grow up happy and emotionally healthy.
— Samantha Dear Samantha, First, I would like to commend you on your mature attitude, your deep love for your daughter, and your disciplined focus to do whatever it takes to create the right environment for Isla to flourish in. Yes, there are significant studies that suggest that babies that are exposed to high levels of the stress hormone cortisol are more likely to develop behavior problems and stress-related diseases later in life. These children experience atypical fluctuations of cortisol, putting them at increased risk for a variety of mental and emotional conditions. Babies who habitually experience a high level of cortisol will endure higher stress levels. If your baby’s level of cortisol spikes high only occasionally, she is more likely to develop a normal, healthy pattern of stress and hormonal change. In addition to keeping your daughter away from chronic fighting and abuse from here on out, it’s important to learn how to pick up on your daughter’s cues and give her what she needs in a timely way. Does she need your loving attention? Is she hungry, tired, or in need a diaper change? If you tune into your baby’s emotions, concerns and needs, you provide her with essential support, reassurance, and make her feel safe. Researchers are clear that by being a sensitive and responsive parent, your infant may learn physical and mental skills more rapidly, as well as reap important health benefits such as being protected from toxic stress. The better you understand your baby’s perspective, the better your chances of minimizing her stress. Studies suggest that if you are physically affectionate toward your baby, it will have a positive effect toward protecting her from the effects of chronic stress. If you have a nurturing caress and comfortably give physical touching such as rocking, stroking, and gentle hugging, your baby daughter will be more likely to end up more resilient to chronic stress. Many researchers believe that affectionate physical contact triggers chemicals that break up stress in the brain, including oxytocin and endogenous opioids, which have a calming effect and are believed to support the baby’s ability to cope with stress. Along with physical affection, speaking in a warm, loving voice and using sympathetic body language triggers your baby’s brain to release oxytocin and helps develop a secure, healthy relationship with you. However, it’s also important not to overstimulate your baby. Even the most social adults need time and space alone, and babies are no different. Sometimes that might mean backing off, as your little one may need to withdraw and quietly rest once in a while. In one study, researchers observed mothers who ignored their babies’ signals about not being touched. The babies who received unwanted stimulation had higher cortisol levels. Therefore, it’s important to learn and respond to the preferences of your baby. n Patti Carmalt-Vener, a faculty member with the Southern California Society for Intensive Short Term Psychotherapy, has been a psychotherapist in private practice for 23 years and has an office in Pasadena. COMEDIAN BRIAN REGAN BRINGS FAMILY-FRIENDLY FUNNINESS TO THE PASADENA CIVIC AUDITORIUM AUG. 22
or nearly 30 years Brian Regan has worked hard to develop his reputation as one of the top standup comics on the planet, working in the clean and clever school of comedy that has also paid off for Jerry Seinfeld and Jim Gaffigan. Yet unlike those two fellow superstars, Regan had long struggled to succeed as an actor as well as a comedian. The Las Vegas-based funnyman is currently riding a creative wave in which Oscar-winning comedy wizard Peter Farrelly of “Green Book” fame has cast him in the critically acclaimed TV series “Loudermilk.” He also recently unveiled the four-episode Netflix series “Stand Up and Away!” which is produced by Seinfeld and combines his greatest hits from standup with comedy sketches based on those routines. Next Thursday, Aug. 22, Regan will be hitting the stage of the historic Pasadena Civic Auditorium as part of a national standup comedy tour that serves as the testing ground of new material for his next Netflix special.. “I was in college, took a speech class while an accounting major. I made my class laugh and made my teacher laugh, and I was like, ‘I’ve never impressed a teacher in my life about anything,’” recalls Regan, taking time to explain his creative process and the challenges and rewards of finally breaking into comedy beyond the stage. “I loved the feeling and making people laugh. It spoke to my soul and so I decided to be a standup comedian. I pride myself on turning the material over. I have seven different one-hour recordings out there, and I’m working on my eighth. Once I finish one, I consider it done and baked and I move away from it.” While Regan lives in Las Vegas, he doesn’t perform there, instead preferring to keep his home base a regular home while raising his two children. “I don’t talk about them that much anymore,” says Regan. “When they were young, I tried to do stuff about kids and parenting and used my kids as examples. I never wanted to do the kind of thing where they’d be embarrassed or me following them around with a notebook. I mention that I’m a dad onstage because I want a little autobiography, but I don’t move much in that direction. “I’m not actively looking but there’s an antenna that’s always up, even if I’m not always paying attention to it,” he adds. “Going through my day, I’ll notice something that’s odd, goofy, whatever. That’s my work and my act. I wouldn’t say that I’m red alert as I’m walking

around, but I happen upon it. It comes to me.” It’s a good thing that material comes to him so easily, since his Netflix deal for multiple specials puts him in a rarefied class of comics that includes Dave Chappelle, Jim Gaffigan and Chris Rock and requires him to always be thinking of top-notch jokes. He notes that Netflix provides a “great opportunity for a lot of comedians to get their content out there,” but that “the downside is with so much content, it’s harder for people to be noticed.” FREE JAZZ “As far as what I’m talking about these days, it’s hard to describe The Pasadena comedy in a short version but I would like to say lately I’m talking Playhouse Disabout things that would surprise people,” says Regan. “People attrict Summer tach a clean connotation to what I do, but I like to have some rough Jazz Series edges occasionally. I talk about guns in my show, dabble in politics presents free a bit. I try to approach things where both sides laugh, but the topics jazz concerts might surprise you.” from 5 to 7 p.m. It was Peter Farrelly who came to Regan with the role of “MugSundays in Vrosy” in “Loudermilk,” a recovering alcoholic and father estranged man’s courtyard, from his gaggle of kids. Farrelly had seen him perform at a comedy 695 E. Colorado festival and initially came backstage to commend his performance, Blvd., Pasadena. but in meeting him he saw a depth of personality that had largely Sunday’s concert been untapped by Hollywood until then. features the Joe LoPiccolo Trio. I never had an opportunity to act. It was just a OPERA 411 great opportunity for me. I have a lot of serious emotional stuff this An LA Opera year in addition to the funny stuff. Talk discusses “Hollywood seemed to have a blind eye to me, and I never rethe works of ally felt like anybody gave a damn about anything I was doing,” he Leonard Berncontinues. “I’m surprised by that. I was surprised that nobody was stein starting at knocking on my door or making my phone ring to do a sitcom. It 1 p.m. Monday hurt but at the same time I had a very successful standup career at the Pasadena and don’t really need that. I wanted to do shows where I’m creSenior Center, atively involved if it’s about my comedy. Loudermilk is a departure 85 E. Holly St., from everything; it’s earthy and gritty while I’m clean. House Party Jam ALTADENA’S MORRISON & CO. BRING THEIR HOUSE PARTY-INSPIRED MUSIC TO OLD TOWNE PUB SATURDAY
“M
usic never left our house, never,” declares Deb Morrison-Littell, a photographer and Altadena resident who also anchors Morrison & Co. with guitarist hubby Matt Littell. But music inevitably got pushed aside as they raised their family — until one Mother’s Day, when Morrison-Littell arose to find her husband (who also plays bass in Chip Kinman’s punk-blues outfit Ford Madox Ford) had claimed floor space in their living room for a 1963 sparkling Ludwig drum kit, just like one they’d had years before. “He said, ‘Happy Mother’s Day, we’re bringing music back. We’re going to do what we used to do prior to having these little rug rats,’” Morrison-Littell recalled. “I said, ‘OK!’” The two had played in various rock bands over the years, but never in the same one. Now, with Morrison & Co., their sound is somewhere between Bakersfield country and classic Laurel Canyon-style pop, performed with a shifting array of friends drawn from their Living Room Session jam nights.
22 PASADENA WEEKLY | 08.15.17
“We started having these crazy jam sessions in this old place we live in, and it just started turning into a thing,” she explains. “We’ve got an old Hammond organ in the living room, a standup bass and vintage gear. I actually started recording and filming some of those nights because they were so magical.” Friends across the street installed a home studio, so now, Morrison-Littell says, when inspiration strikes during house jams they stroll across the road to capture “raw moments” on recordings. They’ve been posting singles on their website. “I have a lot of material,” she says. “But it doesn’t make any sense to release an album in its entirety; people’s attention span isn’t that long. So I’m just going to release one single at a time with a video, because that makes sense in today’s modern world.” This Saturday they’re returning to Old Towne Pub (“our old stomping grounds”) with a lineup of friends: Medicine Hat, T-Lowe (“True Blood” actor Todd Lowe), and the Lost Weekend. Come Aug. 28, Morrison & Co. will
return to Highland Park Bowl, where Morrison-Littell books weekly Americana Music Nights. “I noticed that it was difficult to find Americana music nights except in the wonderful places like the Grand Ole Echo (in Echo Park) and Maui Sugar Mill (in Tarzana), which are out there a little bit, but no place around here. So I asked Highland Park Bowl if I could book Wednesdays with other Americana bands. … Now it’s going really well.” “We started playing again just for the love of music and for community,” she says of her band’s evolution. “Just getting together and doing it the old-fashioned way, with no expectations other than just to hit that sweet spot when you’re playing music and everybody’s looking at each other and you [realize], ‘This is why I’m playing.’ We just decided to keep riding with that.” n Morrison & Co. headline at Old Towne Pub, 66 N. The British troubadour and self-confessed “history nerd” exalts 13 women misrepresented or ignored by history, including Dodge City vaudeville singer Dora Hand and Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Execution isn’t always equal to concept but it’s refreshing, especially when Turner magnifies details like Mata Hari’s refusal of a blindfold before blowing a kiss to her firing squad (“Eyes of the Day”). Highlights: the jazzy “Nica,” about the Rothschild heiress’ “mercy missions for musicians”; “A Perfect Wife,” about serial killer Nannie Doss; and the Pogues-ish “The Graveyard of the Outcast Dead,” about medieval church-employed sex workers. Turner’s “Tales From No Man’s Land” podcast digs deeper: frank-turner. com
LEELA JAMES & THE TRUTH BAND, Are You Ready (Sound & EOne): HHH½ The Houston-based, LA-raised R&B diva throws down a gauntlet with this taut EP. “I Still Believe” is cousin to last year’s “Did It for Love,” while the throbbing “Get Down” showcases Jairus Mozee’s spiraling guitar solos and James’ gritty ferocity (and spiritual debt to Etta James). The statementmaking centerpiece is “That Woman,” which James premiered in March at the Black Girls Rock festival: “Bitch ain’t my name/ Don’t start this fire/ ’Cause I’ll bring the pain.” No doubt. The Portland rocker’s latest isn’t as immediately eargrabbing as 2016’s “Dolls of Highland” or last year’s “Full Circle Nightmare,” yet reinforces his gift for storytelling and synthesizing influences (Bowie, T Rex, Harry Nilsson). He plays almost everything on the surreal “Bed of Needles” and “Deathwish Blue,” but full band collaboration on remaining tracks yields more muscular arrangements. Highlights: the Mellotron-textured “O! Lucky Hand,” and “2 Ugly 4 NY” (“You and me, we’re suckers in a vampire town/ With deadbeat eyes and not enough blood to go ’round”). Jam-packed Joy
BRAD COLERICK BRINGS SIX BANDS IN FIVE HOURS TO BRADFEST III SATURDAY NIGHT BY CARL KOZLOWSKI Brad Colerick has been making Wednesday and Thursday nights at the Arroyo Seco Grill a lot more fun for nearly a decade, as his weekly Wine & Song series of music shows there has featured dozens of Americana, jazz and blues artists. But on Saturday, he’ll be presenting a much bigger night of fun when Bradfest III takes over three at the restaurant, which is located on the edge of the Arroyo Seco Golf Course in South Pasadena. Headlined by Jeff Dale & the South Woodlawners, the five-hour musical celebration will feature a total of six premiere Los Angeles-based musical acts on two stages — inside the Blue Guitar room and outdoors on the Arroyo Seco Grill patio. A third acoustic stage will feature an outdoor “jam session” near the first tee box. “I started doing shows down there, and it’s just a really great space,” says Colerick. “Initially the manager asked if I’d be doing an event to promote an evening. They have miniature golf there, plus 18-hole par-3 golf with lights on the course so you can play until 10. They’ll have that going, and a driving range. Add in their outdoor taco bar, draft beer and wine selections, and I just love bringing the community together, because it’s just a wonderful thing we can all bond with.” The performance by Jeff Dale and the South Woodlawners will feature an eclectic mix of guest musicians including the principal cellist of the LA Opera. The band Angel Town Combo is reminiscent of a classic late-night talk show band due to its ability to cross genres with ease, playing everything from soul and surf to straight-ahead jazz and swing — reminiscent of a classic, late-night talk-show band. In addition, The Salty Suites are a dynamic three-piece acoustic band with blazing instrumentals, beautiful vocals, and soaring harmonies. Dave Tull of the Dave Tull Trio has long been regarded one of the finest jazz drummers in Los Angeles, frequently working with artists such as Barbara Streisand, Michael Bublé and Chuck Mangione. Rounding out the lineup are two more Chicago natives: Jodi Siegel, a gifted blues rooted singer, songwriter and artful slide guitarist; and Raspin Stuart, a seasoned song crafter with a soulful delivery. Colerick was born in Valentine, Nebraska in the heart of Cherry County, an area with a population density of one person per square mile. He spent his formative years in Lincoln, where he attended the University of Nebraska studying business and music before moving to the significantly larger city of Los Angeles in 1986. He became an ace jingle writer for commercials for major corporations including Coca-Cola, McDonalds, Budweiser and Sears, with the ads frequently using iconic artists such as B.B. King and Johnny Cash. Colerick finally released the first of five solo albums, “Cottonwood,” in 2006 and has since released “Lines in the Dirt,” “When I’m Gone,” “Tucson” and “Nine Ten Thirty.” “I play and tour as a singer-songwriter a bit, but have been staying a little closer to home lately because my kids are in high school and my son’s going to PCC in the fall,” says Colerick. “I play at McCabe’s in Santa Monica sometimes, or in Covina at the Fret House, places like that. “The ‘Wine and Song’ series started because I was in a songwriter group, and we gathered every couple months for a meeting,” he adds. “Other people wanted to know about it, and let people know about the creative process of songwriting, that started me as a presenter. The songwriter group morphed into a public event, and we kept it going every week for 10 years now. The 10-year celebration is in October.” n “Bradfest III” takes place from 5 to 10 p.m. Saturday at the Arroyo Seco Grill, 1055 Lohman Lane, South Pasadena. Admission is $25. rowing up in North Little Rock, Arkansas, in the 1980s, I was often more frustrated than other kids because I felt trapped in a small town and longed for the big-city excitement of New York, Chicago or Los Angeles. It seemed like the entire world was whizzing past me, while I was a broken-down car on the side of the off-ramp of life. Add in the fact that my well-meaning father (whom I now get along with splendidly) had emigrated from Poland, a country dominated by hardline rules from both its communist government and the Catholic Church. He wanted to give us a better life, which he achieved as a career VA doctor, but until my early 30s we often butted heads over the slightest sense of impropriety in my other career as a standup comedian and humor writer. I found escape from all those internal pressures through the music of Bruce Springsteen, who had grown up at odds with his father in a hardscrabble New Jersey town and channeled his frustrations with some of the most personal yet universal lyrics in rock music history. The powerfully uplifting new movie “Blinded by the Light” shows just how universal Springsteen’s music can be by depicting the true story of a Pakistani Muslim teen named Javed and how “The Boss” inspired his own quest to become a writer despite his immigrant father’s disapproval in 1980s England. The movie follows Javed (Viviek Kalra) as a 17-year-old in a working-class town called Luton in 1987, a shy introvert who constantly writes poems and song lyrics in the journals he’s been keeping since he was 10 years old. Devoid of a social life due to his incredibly strict father Malik (Kulvinder Ghir), he thinks the only way out is to ace his school exams and study economics at a far-away college. A new English teacher named Ms. Clay (Hayley Atwell) encourages his creative writing and tells him his poems have power, and that his mission in life is to share his point of view with the world. A cute Caucasian girl named Eliza (Nell Williams), who’s a political activist outsider, is intrigued by overhearing Ms. Clay’s compliments. But a chance encounter with a Sikh student named Roops (Aaron Phagura) inspires Roops to hand Javed cassettes of Springsteen’s “Born in the USA” and “Darkness on the Edge of Town,” telling him they will inspire him and set him free. And, indeed, they do, setting Javed on a path to expressing his views of the world, becoming his own man who can be both supportive of and distinctly different from his father, and toward the rush and glory of first love. “Blinded” is named after one of Springsteen’s earliest songs, and the film is packed with 16 of The Boss’ most beloved tunes. Just as no Springsteen song is merely a song, but rather powerful portraits of frustrated lives desperate for transcendence, the tunes here aren’t just background music. They’re rousing calls to arms, urging us all onto the greater selves we all too often bury under the slog of daily life. The songs are deployed in highly creative ways, with several filmed as giant musical numbers that have the leads singing along with Bruce’s actual recordings. “Born to Run” features a dynamic run through the streets of Luton, “Thunder Road” becomes a breathtaking love song with couples swirling in the streets. At other key points, the lyrics of Springsteen are spelled out on the screen, pouring out of Javed’s ears as he feels his voice and his hero’s become one. Director Gurinda Chadha works wonders with her first mainstream US release since her surprise 2002 hit “Bend It Like Beckham.” That film showed the transcendent power of soccer to help a teenage daughter of orthodox Sikhs break free of their rigid rules and into her own person — a similar theme to that of “Blinded,” but one which she handles superbly. Most powerfully, “Blinded” is a story of the universally relatable divide that comes between fathers and sons as the younger generation learns to stand as men. It shows that music is the universal language that can break down barriers and make all types of people, no matter their age or cultural background, understand each other. I have to give my own father credit that he never interfered with my taste in music and that my parents bought me tickets to see Springsteen while I was in college as a Christmas gift. And a few years ago, he surprised me greatly by sending a CD of “Born in the USA” among the gifts for his younger sister’s birthday. Afflicted by Down syndrome, which made it difficult for her to learn English, she has always come alive most when listening to joyous, vibrant music. The fact that my father remembered more than 30 years later how much “Born in the USA” set me free and wanted to share its spirit with his sister moved me almost to tears. Given a chance by adventurous audiences willing to seek out a rousing, touching and highly entertaining film that’s utterly devoid of traditional star power, “Blinded” could easily become a timeless coming of age classic like “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” and “The Breakfast Club.” ■

Additionally, the Department is proposing a Zoning Code Amendment to the City’s density bonus provisions establishing a menu of affordable housing concessions that would qualify for streamlined review for density bonus projects that meet certain criteria. Finally, amendments are proposed to the Schedule of Taxes, Fees, and Charges to increase the inclusionary housing in-lieu fee rates. The City Council will conduct a public hearing and consider all of the proposed amendments. PROJECT LOCATION: All properties on which multi-family residential or mixed-use projects are an allowed use throughout the City of Pasadena. ENVIRONMENTAL DETERMINATION: The City Council will consider whether adoption of the proposed Amendments are exempt from the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) under Section 15305 (Class 5 Minor Alterations in Land Use Limitations) and whether there are no features that distinguish this project from others in the exempt class, resulting in no unusual circumstances. Section 15305 allows minor alterations in land use limitations in areas with an average slope of less than 20%, which do not result in any changes in land use or density. Planning Commission Recommendation: On May 8, June 26, and July 24, 2019, the Planning Commission reviewed the proposed Zoning Code Amendments and recommended that the City Council adopt the proposed amendments as modified. NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the City Council will hold a public hearing to receive testimony, oral and written, on the proposed amendments to update inclusionary housing requirements for multi-family residential projects, establish an affordable housing concession menu for density bonus projects, and increase the inclusionary in-lieu fee rates.
