WHERE IS BARRON TRUMP?

Demented Donald Trump idiotically insists local school boards should illegally force your vulnerable children back into crowded classrooms unsafely as the Trump-caused COVID-19 catastrophe only continues to get worse, while on permanent vacation Trump golfs endlessly at the taxpayers’ expense. Delusional Donald continues to claim the coronavirus will simply “...disappear, one day, it’s like a miracle, it will disappear...” as some sort of sick, psychotic rationalization for his Russiancontrolled regime’s intentional inaction during this deadly pandemic. Vladimir Putin and his pathetic puppet Trump aren’t fooling anyone other than Jim Jones Trump’s Orange Kool-Aid drinkers and their greedy, hypocritical charlatan pastors in their private jets. Over 170,000 Americans are dead due to the Republican Party’s ongoing criminal negligence and purposefully incompetent cruelty. On November 3, the American people will finally render their political and constitutional judgment against Orange Julius Caesar in a landslide defeat for the GOP of historic proportions. Adios, Trump! And if the GOP’s dimwitted, draft-dodging version of Julius Caesar follows through on his tyrannical, terroristic threats to sabotage and/or cancel this November’s presidential election, the American republic’s defenders will respond appropriately in the remaining days of traitor Trump’s pathological presidency. (Perhaps the Orange emperor has never read William Shakespeare’s play about this subject?) Speaking of Shakespeare, where in the world is the Tangerine Tyrant’s 14-year-old son Barron Trump—a sad, tragic, unloved Shakespearean character if there ever was one. Considering the virtual blackout of almost all news coverage of President Trumptanic’s troubled relationship with his youngest son, Barron, isn’t it time for the craven corporate media to highlight the highly relevant fact that Barron will not be returning to school in person this year like your children, but Barron Trump will instead stay safe at home and attend class online? Jake Pickering

SAFE AND SOUND

Is it democratic that one man can prevent bipartisan legislation passed by the House not be acted upon by the senate? Over 275 bipartisan bills are sitting in the grave site of the Grim Reaper. Many of these bills are strongly supported by Republicans like the “impeachment and replacement of the president” that was supported by 71% of the Republicans. Here are a few relevant bills buried in McConnell’s graveyard. • The Safe Act, which is a bill to help states build a support system for safe, reliable elections. Why would the senate not support this important bill? • The Equality Act that has received so much needed attention and is vital to our efforts at the very least to begin to take this American issue seriously. Of course, this is not a Republican goal. • Raise Wages Act. Wages have been flat for four years due to President Trump’s overt actions to support corporations and businesses over American workers. Although Trump has claimed workers are his top priority like many other promises, he has taken actions to do the opposite. Like gun violence also proposed by our frightened children, Trump promised action but never accomplished a thing. Now, he and Mr. Barr are trying to eliminate Obamacare. Finally, as we continue to amass over 5.1 million virus cases and our death toll keeps rising—to 169,000 now—our president claims, “It will disappear.” It is my wish that he will disappear after the fall election! ho are California’s “stranded workers”? According to leaders in higher education, they are the state’s 2.5 million working adults who have graduated from high school but have not earned a postsecondary degree or any type of vocational certification. The more important question, however, is why they are considered “stranded.” Data from California Competes, a nonpartisan research and Dr. Edward C. Ortell, policy group, show 41% of this racially diverse Governing Board Member, group are parents; more than half work full time; Citrus College. and 58% earn less than $25,000 annually. In other words, they do not have the financial means, the time or the necessary information to pursue higher education options that could help them break the cycle in which they are trapped. Today’s high-tech workplace requires advanced training and a new set of skills across all industries. Workers employed in low-wage, entry level jobs have little hope of advancing to the next level in their careers without acquiring additional training and new skills. COVID-19 has further changed the workplace in sudden and dramatic ways. Jobs once thought accessible only to workers who could commute to and from the workplace each day are now being done entirely online. Other employers are using technologies that combine commuting and working from home. As we emerge from the pandemic, much of the new workplace model will remain, given its convenience, flexibility and cost-saving advantages. And much of it will require new skills. A recent study by the Strada Education Network indicated that nondegree programs have the highest level of interest among Americans who desire career advancement. According to Andrew Hanson, director of research for Strada, “…Americans are telling us they’re interested in immediate opportunities to develop their skills.” Stranded workers need look no further than their local community college to quickly acquire new skills. Citrus College offers skill awards and certificates of achievement in 30 disciplines or programs. The college has also partnered with ED4Career to deliver online career training and certification in a variety of fields. Students can enroll in this program at any time, and courses can be accessed 24/7. New students can tap into counselors, financial aid information and other services at citruscollege.edu. Extraordinarily difficult times such as these require extraordinary solutions. Community colleges continue to prove they are able to step up quickly and help students across all educational levels find a program that will maximize their employment opportunities and provide a pathway to a better life. n Professor emeritus at Pasadena City College and former executive director of the Pasadena Education Association, Dr. Edward C. Ortell is the senior governing board member at Citrus College. He has served on the California Community College Trustees (CCCT) state board of directors and 11 terms as president of the Citrus College Board of Trustees.

•CONSIDER THIS• BY ELLEN SNORTLAND

WE ARE AGAIN WATCHING HISTORY BEING MADE REFRESHINGLY, THE RIGHT KIND

L

et me start by categorically stating that Mount Rushmore is not available for a makeover, OK? The fantasies of the Orange Horror should stay solely in his addled brain and not foisted onto the public consciousness. Had any of us been told four years ago of his dream to be installed on our beloved national monument, it would have been met with immediate derision from all sides. Today our collective reaction is, “Well, of course, he does.” Do the indignities ever stop? Yes, they do! My chronic 3 1/2 yearlong indignation streak just got a joy break! This week, former vice president and presumptive Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden—not my first pick by any stretch—selected our junior senator from California, Kamala Harris, to be his running mate! I cried with joy and gratitude. She was not my first pick either. So what? I’m behind the two with all my might. I’m not looking for perfection; I’m looking for liberty and justice for all, and that’s not a perfect pursuit by any means. I know that this team will be lightyears better than Trump and his Minions of Evil, and last I checked all candidates are human. Except for… oh, never mind. History-making events this August: On Wednesday, August 26, it’s the 100th anniversary of the women’s suffrage movement in the United States—a long, hard-fought battle to overcome the most massive voter suppression effort ever mounted. Winning the vote for women was not easy, anywhere at any time. The U.S. campaign for the women’s vote started in 1848; they finally won it 72 years later in 1920. For a boastful democracy like ours, you have to wonder why it took so long for women to achieve the most basic right of being a citizen in a democracy: voting. The situation was almost like a Zen Koan: how do you win the vote if you can’t vote for yourself to get it? So why did it take so long? Several factors are involved. Let’s start with it… Ridicule! American men are notoriously insecure about their “masculinity.” They are so afraid to be seen as “feminine” or “gay” that they don’t want to do anything that challenges their frail masculine ego. This has not changed. In the 1800s, men were afraid that if women could vote, they would suddenly “wear the pants” in the family. Women would go to work while men stayed home and took care of the house and kids. Horrors! Today, some men are so wimpy they feel “e-mask-ulated” when asked to wear a mask to protect themselves and others. Go figure. And then there’s … Fear! If the society 6 PASADENA WEEKLY | 08.20.20

you’re in tells you that your very survival depends upon a man providing for you, and the only outside jobs for women don’t pay enough to live an independent life … well, you’re going to go with survival. This, of course, leaves out societal outcasts like women who were single or widowed. A person whose survival is threatened is least likely to “rock the boat” when it comes to social reform. That’s one reason why there were also women who were against the vote. And let’s not forget this evergreen… Follow the money! While maintaining that women were “designed” for the home, men were afraid of having to take up the slack there if the women had a role outside of it. Besides, if you can have a whole group of unpaid people doing laundry, cooking, diapers, child care, sewing, decorating and elder care, think of all that hidden free labor! And think of who profits from it. The liquor industry, excuse the expression, poured millions of dollars into defeating the women’s vote because they feared women would immediately vote to ban booze. Ironically, the amendment to prohibit alcohol was enacted before women won the vote. Science and clergy also opposed women voting: Some preachers and scientists issued dire warnings to women that if they voted, their ovaries would dry up. That didn’t sound like a threat to a woman who already had 10 kids. “Hey, sign me up for that!” August 26 is Women’s Equality Day—every year! How apt that we can celebrate 100 years of the vote with the V.P. selection of Kamala Harris; she’s not only Black, she’s also of Indian descent and is the first woman of color to be a V.P. candidate on a major party ticket. I want to weep when I think of how her foremothers in the U.S. suffrage movement would have felt if they could see this. For sure, the more well-known white women would be overjoyed, but even more over-themoon happy would be Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman and that woman of metal, Ida B. Wells. I call Ida that because she had a heart of gold, nerves of steel and brass ovaries. Thinking about them leads me a fantasy… if we were going to alter Mount Rushmore, let’s put up Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman and Ida B. Wells, while leaving room for President Kamala Harris. That’s a sculptedin-granite fantasy I can support. n Ellen Snortland has written Consider This… for the Pasadena Weekly for decades. Reach her at ellen@beautybitesbeast.com

‘A LETHAL COMBINATION’

SOUTH PASADENA CITY COUNCIL FACES WOES FROM AN INCOMPLETE BUDGET TO FAKE TWITTER ACCOUNTS BY MATTHEW RODRIGUEZ

T

he city of South Pasadena faces calls from constituents asking for greater transparency after learning of an “astonishingly incomplete” budget and a council member creating fake email accounts to criticize her foes and praise her allies. “The city of South Pasadena management and its city council has not published an audit in two and half years,” said Josh Betta. “The city manager has not published a financial status report during the entirety of her three-year tenure — that is a lethal combination.” A ‘Budgeting Error’ Betta, the city’s former financial director from 2001 to 2008, worked in several municipalities, including San Marino, Glendora and most notably the city of Bell. Betta was chosen to restructure the Bell’s finances after a scandal regarding misappropriation of over $50 million in public funds. He published a report outlining significant concerns of the city’s finances for the past few years calling it an “intellectual crime.” In his 56-page report, he describes the growing number of retirees and their pensions and post-employment benefits that accompany them. “[This suggests] that nobody knows where the spending is, how much it is, whether the city has a balanced budget and the state of their reserves,” he said. “South Pasadena is like other California communities to the extent that it is shouldering skyrocketing post-employment costs… It is unlike many California communities in that its voters have never been given the benefit of informed choice.” Also, Betta reports that there is a major error in the city’s budget for FY 2019-2020. According to the South Pasadenan, in FY 2018-2019, the auditable reserves totaled $16.99 million, while in FY 2019-2020, the audible reserves totaled $12.48 million. This “budgeting error” accounts for nearly $4.5 million of lost funds. Betta admits that this may not indicate any type of wrongdoing; however, it will remain unknown until a full audit of the government’s finances. According to Betta, the city has yet to acknowledge the report on public record, even though it has been brought to their attention by not only him but other concerned citizens. “The Betta report has never been acknowledged on public record. They have not decided to study it, to appoint a blue-ribbon committee for it,” he said. “The city council has not acted, to publicly study the failures of this administrative government. I think that is the fundamental unfairness to those that make up a great community.” In addition to his report, Betta contacted the finance director Karen Aceves to express his concerns, which fell on deaf ears. “She told me that they were aware they hadn’t done their audits according to timelines and deadlines for the last two years,” he said. “They

decided anyway to propose a new budgetary spending plan. I told her she was making a huge institutional mistake.” According to the South Pasadenan, this report arrives while City Manager Stephanie DeWolfe has come under fire for 22 contracts approved during her tenure. As city manager DeWolfe has unilateral authority to approve contracts less than $25,000. The deals given out have been assigned to vacant positions, polling, permit processing, audit prep and communication services, half of which were for amounts between $24,375 and $25,000. Also, the South Pasadenan reports that resident and management consultant Sheila Rossi and her husband Steve Rossi believe that there are significant differences between the budget approved by the Finance Commission and the one presented to the city council. Twitter fingers Along with South Pasadena’s budgetary woes, councilwoman Marina Khubeserian announced her resignation after she used fake emails to attack her critics and praise her allies. According to a complaint submitted to the South Pasadena Police Department, resident Chris Bray accuses Khubeserian of using two aliases — “Mel Trom” and “Emily Diaz-Vines — to threaten a colleague and attack residents who were critical of South Pasadena’s City Hall. “While this happened during a time of great personal stress and when I was facing a serious health issue, there is absolutely no excuse for my conduct,” Khubeserian said in a statement. “I also have some serious reactions to a medication I was taking and had a lot of increased anxiety that was exacerbated during the COVID-19 pandemic.” She also said that she was “extremely remorseful and mortified by my actions.” According to published reports, Khubesarian disguised herself as DiazVines, claiming to be a 17-year-old editor at the South Pasadena High School newspaper. She called Bray a “pervert” as he tried to uncover her true identity with a cup of coffee. She also targeted Betta in an attempt to discredit the former financial director as his report. The would-be whistleblower accused Betta of domestic violence and of creating hostile work environments during his tenure at other cities. She also claimed she confirmed it with an unnamed city employee in Glendora and a journalist. “I was shocked to see how much it is governed by social media and tribal conduct,” said Betta. “I was unpleasantly surprised with how ineffective the government was, having been dominated by tribal infighting below the surface. I think that speaks to what may be troubling in local governments in the present and future.” n 08.20.20 | PASADENA WEEKLY 7

P

asadena Unified School District began the 2020-2021 school year on Monday, August 17, reopening their virtual doors to students and teachers alike. “We’re excited to see our students reconnect, learn, and advance in the new school year,” Superintendent Brian McDonald said. “Although we are beginning with extraordinary circumstances, the entire PUSD team is committed to providing a quality education for all of our students.” PUSD differs from other districts in the country as they decided to open their campuses. In communities in Georgia and Nebraska, this step resulted in COVID-19 outbreaks in some schools. In suburban Atlanta, a school district quarantined nearly 1,200 students and teachers after a 2nd-grade student tested positive for COVID-19. In Nebraska, Broken Bow School district canceled classes after a staff member tested positive. PUSD and many other school districts in California opted to continue with online learning. PUSD decided to go with distance learning as COVID-19 cases increased in the region. “While we’re excited about the start of the new school year, we know that we are facing challenges that are new to all of us,” McDonald said. “We therefore ask that you keep in mind that the first couple of weeks of school may not go according to plan.” PUSD shortened the first week of school, giving students August 20 and 21 off, to allow faculty and staff to attend a staff development session. Grab-and-go meals will resume on the first day of school, August 17. Parents and students can pick up breakfast and lunch at any school site between 9 a.m. and noon. PUSD has also extended the helpdesk hours from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., allowing students direct support for their devices and applications. The district also provides curbside tech support; however, it requires a prior appointment. Parents can also help their children by watching videos and workshops on the PUSD website. “Please rest assured that we will do all that we can to assist you as needed,” McDonald said. “Our commitment to doing our best for students remains the same.” PUSD will not have child care until state guidance is issued. According to a press release, they will receive instructions this week. n

COVID COUNT Reported Cases in Pasadena and surrounding areas as of Monday, August 17 South Pasadena: 238; Alhambra: 1046; Altadena: 540; Arcadia: 407; Glendale: 2763; Monrovia: 615; San Gabriel: 496; Total Confirmed Cases in Pasadena: 2,230 Total Deaths in Pasadena: 111 Total Confirmed Cases in LA County: 221,950 Total Deaths in LA County: 5,254 • Since the state fixed its COVID-19 reporting system, the cases in Pasadena has increased as expected. From Friday, August 7, to Thursday, August 13, the city average about 20 new cases a day. On Sunday, they reported 21 new cases and no further deaths. In fact, since last Monday, August 10, there have been no deaths reported. • The state moratorium on eviction is set to expire on September 1, leaving many anxious for the future. According to Pasadena Now, the Judicial Council of California voted 19-1 to end two temporary emergency plans regarding evictions and judicial foreclosures. However, Pasadena’s moratorium remains intact from the order. In the United States, 10% of Americans are still unemployed as the number of cases rise. In California, there are over 3.9 million people unemployed due to the novel coronavirus. • After filing a lawsuit against the state’s COVID-19 restrictions, Pasadena ordered Harvest Rock Church to cease all in-person services until further notice. The local church located off St. John Avenue defied the order continuing its in-person services. Harvest Rock and the state have a scheduled hearing in federal court on Wednesday. Harvest Rock’s lawsuit claims that the governor’s order to cease in-person services discriminates against religious bodies. — Information Complied by Matthew Rodriguez

THE EMBODIMENT OF ‘CARPE DIEM’ CALTECH PROFESSOR AND ALTADENA RESIDENT DIES AT 82 BY NIKHIL MISRA-BHAMBRI

C

altech seismology professor and Altadena resident, Donald V. Helmberger died August 14 at age 82. Helmberger’s grit earned him positions at several top institutions and enabled him to transform the field of seismology and develop early warning systems that saved the lives of millions of people. His kindness and generosity touched the soul of colleagues and friends who crossed his path. Helmberger lived each moment like his last, as his endless pursuit of knowledge and his love of people kept him mentally and physically engaged in everything that he did till the very end. Helmberger was born January 23, 1938, in the small town of Perham, Minnesota. He was the youngest child of 13 in a family who struggled to keep their farm afloat in the midst of Northern Minnesota’s harsh winters. His older brother, John, realized the hardships of farming life, and emphasized the importance of education as a passport to having choices in life. Heeding his brother’s advice, Helmberger trudged along in the snow to primary and high school to pursue his ticket to freedom. Finally, this exhausting journey to get an education paid off, and Helmberger earned his bachelor’s from University of Minnesota in 1961. Helmberger’s higher educational career exposed him to the diversity of the 50 states. One particular experience during his undergraduate career shaped his entire future in academics. Helmberger traveled with his friend, George Shor, from the Scripps Institute of Oceanography, on a research cruise to Alaska to conduct seismic studies of the ocean crust in the Bering Sea. This exposure to seismology sparked a shift in Helmberger’s focus from physics to geophysics, in which he earned a masters and Ph.D. from UC San Diego in 1967. After earning his doctorate, Helmberger made his way to the East Coast where he worked as a research assistant at MIT and then as a faculty member at Princeton. In 1970, he left the winters behind him and returned to sunny California as an associate professor at Caltech. Once he arrived in the Golden State, he immediately fell in love and never wanted to leave again. Throughout his career at Caltech, Helmberger was a pivotal figure in the world of seismology. He became a full professor in 1979 and was the lab director from 1998 to 2003. During his time as lab director, he led the transition from analog to digital seismic network that ultimately allowed for early earthquake warnings. In 1997, he was the first recipient of the American Geophysical Union’s Inge Lehmann Medal. In 2004, he was named to the National Academy of Sciences, and became an emeritus professor in 2017. “Don was a special person and a brilliant scientist who connected with students over many generations at Caltech,” said Mike Gurnis, seismological lab director. “He was an absolutely genuinely nice man, who really cared about people and tried to help everyone. As an extraordinary scientist, he did many important things in terms of our understanding of planet Earth, and he trained generations of young seismologists who went on to make important discoveries of their own and who became prominent scientists in the USA and many other countries around the world.” Helmberger was well known for understanding the deep interior of the Earth, specifically the core and the mantle, which he concluded is as complex as the exterior. “He discovered more about the deep interior than anyone in the last half of the 20th century,” Gurnis said. “Don looked very carefully at what the Earth is telling us in terms of seismic waves. He had an ability to see anomalies in raw seismographic data that transcended everyone else in seismology.” Helmberger’s diehard passion for understanding the causes of natural disasters helped keep him mentally and physically fit till his last day. To him, spending time in his lab was as natural as play. Until the age of 80, he biked to Caltech from his home in the foothills of Altadena, and ride back up daily on the steep Allen Avenue. Even though Helmberger retired from Caltech at age 80, he continued to be involved in various projects and to supervise the work of doctoral students. In addition to the world of science, Helmberger had a deep interest in

history and different cultures. A year before his death, at a social gathering, he asked a 5-year-old girl to ask her Turkish-only speaking grandmother, “when and how do you think the war in Syria will end?” Helmberger was genuinely interested in hearing her perspective and was happy with the 5-year old girl as his interpreter. If anyone broached a new idea or topic, Helmberger would listen attentively and ask thoughtful questions. He was open to learning about anything and everything. Even the annual 21-day long Tour de France bicycle race fascinated him as he observed the tactics used by team members to eke out seconds of advantage by using wind resistance and relative biking positions. Not someone to usually watch television, he observed the Tour de France with the same intensity he brought to his research. Helmberger’s relatively frequent travels for work often resulted in interesting side excursions with his son, Elliott. In 2009, the two of them traveled to South Central China, near the Tibetan border, and traversed the rural landscape while riding on Yaks, known as the beast of burdens in the Himalayas. In 2018, Helmberger recalled the interesting adventures they had along the way, interacting with monkeys and hand feeding bananas to them. He also had fond memories of a business trip to Hyderabad, India, where he was stuck in his hotel room while riots broke out on the streets following the assassination of then-prime minister, Indira Gandhi. Anytime Helmberger had the opportunity to see something that was out of the ordinary, his natural curiosity and formidable intellect took over and he could observe with equanimity even the violence erupting on Indian streets, 10,000 miles away from home. All of his varied interests combined with his gentle, kind personality made Helmberger a wonderful friend to everyone who crossed his path. Shobita Misra, a longtime family friend, described Helmberger as “a very fine man, and as gentle as a lamb.” Arvind Bhambri, professor at the USC Marshall School of Business, bonded with Helmberger over their shared love of Indian cuisine and learning about each other’s fields of specialization. Bhambri treasured the moments when he and Helmberger enjoyed spicy, Indian food and shared stories about each other’s research. “Don was so smart that I could describe a complex business problem and he would make such perceptive and insightful observations that I would tell him he should have been a business professor. One of the many things that was so special about Don is that he could get to the essence of any subject in seconds,” Bhambri said. Helmberger was a true embodiment of the phrase, “carpe diem.” His love of learning and desire to seize the day led him away from his spartan, rural lifestyle in Minnesota to top universities, and ultimately to settling down in the bustling city of Los Angeles. Helmberger’s passion for intellectual pursuit kept his spirits and physical health vital until his last day on this Earth, an Earth that he understood better than anyone else in this world. n Reporter Nikhil Misra-Bhambri was a lifelong friend of Elliott Helmberger. 08.20.20 | PASADENA WEEKLY 9

Hurtling south down Lake Avenue, it’s hard to miss the large sign reading “Thai street food” printed in bold block letters, posted over the café, tucked in a small shopping center on the southeast corner of Union Street. The sign directs the inclined to Chim! Thai Street Food. Take a quick, close look at the menu and guests will note a variety of dishes not commonly found at a handful of excellent Thai restaurants in town. At least now you know how to get here! A return trip will be well rewarded. Now, I’m at the front entrance of Chim! which is blocked by a desk where I peruse the menu. A couple approaches from the parking lot and I wave them ahead of me as I weigh my options. In the latest twist of lockdown, Chim! has a half dozen socially distanced tables along the sidewalk of the mini mall, where guests can immediately enjoy their food. After consulting with cheery Patty Chum, who is manning the desk today, I place my order. I quickly grab a seat at a table in safe conversational proximity to the couple ordering ahead of me. Kelsey Beck, 32, from Temple City is here for the third time and always orders the same thing—pad se ew ($10.95), an old standard on any Thai menu. “It’s one of the best!” she said. “I always love it when I come here. They’re so nice.” Beck was introduced to Chim! by her companion, who joins us. Jordan Mitchell-Love, 33, of Pasadena

is a regular’s regular. “It reminds me of a southeast Asian street market” Jordan says. The former host of YouTube Travel show “The Vagabond Tales,” Mitchell-Love’s worldly experience is well-documented. “When people are visiting, this is the place I take them. I feel very relaxed when I come here.” Yellow curry ($10.95) is today’s order for him and both friends have Thai iced tea ($4.50) and mango sticky rice ($9.95). Where’s the street food? The Chim! street platter ($16.95) is a combo of papaya salad and gai yang chicken, marinated, grilled and served with sticky rice. It hits all the right spicy, sweet and sour notes and the salad is bright and refreshing. In my order, I’ve included an obligatory ration of pad Thai ($11.95). Of course, it’s also one of the usual suspects on all Thai menus, too. I’ve had pad Thai all over town. I have a deep weakness for the dish. Inevitably, I succumb to its charms regardless of the chef. However, there are always distinctions and nuances that can define the sensibility and approach of whomever is tossing the noodles at the stoves. In this case, that person would be Chef Chatdaow Wattanaprateep. Her version is distinctly bold with tamarind and thoroughly satisfying. However, I need more guidance to the real “street” stuff and that comes by phone with co-owner, Jane Tansurat. Co-owned and operated with her husband Peter, also a chef, Chim! opened in late 2015. “We were both born in Bangkok (but) we grew up in Southern California.” The two met in Pasadena at the now-closed Shogun restaurant, where Peter was a chef. They ran a small café together in Upland before moving to Thailand in 2013. Peter’s brother was attending college at Burapha University in the Thai coastal beach town of Bang Saen and the two Thai-born culinary adventurers from America opened an American-style brunch café across from the campus. On weekend evenings, the expansive Nong Man night market would materialize in the street in front of their restaurant. “That’s where the good stuff was,” she said. “We studied from the whole market.” Upon returning to SoCal, they quizzed other Thai friends: “What’s the Thai food that you want to see that you can’t find here?” So, where does the boss direct us on her menu? First, the “signature” dish: Chim! gai zapp ($10.95) found under “rice dishes.” This spicy dish is a tangle of crispy chicken, cilantro, red onion, scallions, basil and roasted rice powder all tossed with chili-lime juice. The chicken can be swapped for tofu or shrimp ($12.95). “Even Thai people when they come, that’s the dish they go for.” Any questions? Also, look for the monthly specials. Every month, the menu rotates new “street” dishes into the set menu. At the moment, tod mun pla fried fish cakes ($4.50) and curry puff empanadas ($6.95) on the appetizer list and yum wai wai, a cold and spicy ramen salad ($10.95), are current authentic “street” specials at Chim! that will not be found on other local menus. On the regular menu, kee maow chow mein ($12.95) began as a monthly special and proved so popular it earned a permanent spot on the menu. A popular favorite, it features ground chicken, shrimp, Thai sweet basil, green beans, bell peppers, and ramen noodles in a spicy garlic chili sauce. Again, it’s a dish unique to Chim! Tansurat’s previous finance background has helped in negotiating the uncertainties of lockdown. The restaurant stayed open from the beginning of the “safer-at-home” mandate in March and she has not laid off staff. A modest PPP loan helped, but she immediately

lost an estimated 90% of her lunch business, when the office buildings across Lake effectively closed. “It hit us really hard.” Ultimately, she credits her hardworking and loyal staff for getting Chim! through the last five months. Besides Patty Chum and Chef Chatdaow, who is a cousin, the staff includes Jane’s affable young nephew, Drake Wongposarat. Recently, Chim! was closed Monday and Tuesday when Jane, Peter and the rest of the staff retreated for two nights to Big Bear for “a vacation.” Patty confided to me that they stayed up all night and Jane confirms there were “lots of drinking games.” It sounds like a well-earned respite for the creators and curators of some of the most unusual and deliciously authentic Thai street food. • ARTS & CULTURE • DANCING THROUGH COVID-19 PDT FIGHTS THE PANDEMIC WITH AN ONLINE AUCTION BY CHRISTINA FUOCO-KARASINSKI

P

asadena Dance Theatre, like most arts organizations, is hoping to make it through the COVID-19 pandemic. To do so, the Pasadena fixture is hosting an online fundraising auction through 6 p.m. Saturday, September 5. Donors have contributed more than 90 items, from vacation spots to designer jewelry, toys, gift cards, private dance lessons and online conversations and group classes. “We have a lot of really great items,” said Jessamyn Vedro, an instructor and long-time dancer. “The value is up there. We have items that exceed $15,000. We have vacation homes, rentals and we’ve also ensured that almost all the items are redeemable through the end of 2021.” Winning bidders will enjoy their purchases and knowing they helped sustain a well-loved performing arts institution. “We’re hoping that people will be generous and recognize the value of the Pasadena Dance Theatre to the community. We do regularly host auctions as part of our fundraising efforts,” said Vedro, who is an attorney. “We’ve done them in years past. We have done some online auctions, but they culminate in in-person gala fundraisers as well. Because of COVID, we can’t do that, really. We are focusing on trying to make the online auction a greater fundraising source this year. We don’t have that in-person event possibility anymore.”

Continuing its mission The Pasadena Dance Theatre is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to support, foster and advance the art of dance through professional performance and educational programs. It opened its current facility in Central Pasadena in 1997, under the artistic leadership of Cynthia Young and Laurence Blake. The facility houses Pasadena Dance Theatre’s Conservatory training program and provides rehearsal space for its professional company. Students trained in its conservatory continue to dance, choreograph and teach professionally around the world. “We’ve had a lot of students who have had professional ballet careers,” Vedro said. “There are others who still count PDT as one of the most important aspects of their young lives, even if they didn’t go on to be dancers for their profession.” One such person is Vedro. She trained at PDT starting at age 8 and is still involved 30 years later. “Literally, it’s the most important organization in my life,” Vedro said. “I see that in students who are currently studying at PDT. It’s made such a huge impact on them.” For Vedro, it instilled the confidence she needed years later to become a lawyer. “Ballet gives you a confidence that there’s something you know that’s unique,” she said. “That isn’t something everybody knows. That is beautiful. They can’t take that away from you.” The theater’s professional company annually hosts a production of “The Nutcracker,” as well as full-scale productions of classical ballets such as “A Midsum12 PASADENA WEEKLY | 08.20.20

mer Night’s Dream,” “Graduation Ball” and “La Fille Mal Gardee,” and new works like Cynthia Young’s “Beauty and the Beast” and “Cinderella.” “We have an annual ‘Nutcracker’ that has included up to 80 children every year,” Vedro said. “We’ve done full-length performances of classical ballets as well as chamber dance performances and contemporary ballets. We do a lot of outreach into the community, too.” For example, “The Nutcracker” offers a chance for school children in Los Angeles County to see “what’s maybe the first ballet they’ve ever seen in their lives,” she added. “This year, we’re not able to do a live ‘Nutcracker,’” she said. “We’ve had to cancel our whole season. However, in order to provide the excitement and value to our student and professional dancers, we are planning and implementing a virtual ‘Nutcracker’ this year. We’re still working out the details at this time. It will be exciting, new, different and reimagined.” The performance will still involve students in the conservatory—with safety measures in place. The organization has planned an outdoor production in spring 2021 of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” “Hopefully we can have live performances with social distancing in an outdoor venue come April/May of next year,” she said. PDT has been hosting online classes since the shutdown, so it could continue to educate students in dance. “Everything pivoted to a Zoom environment,” Vedro said. “We offered all of our ordinary classes and put together a fully virtual summer intensive program for the conservatory that included guest teachers from the American Ballet Theater and the Houston Ballet. It was really exciting and special because we were able to get teachers who aren’t local to impart their wisdom and experience to our students.” PDT’s students have been “real troopers” through the pandemic, Vedro said. They’ve all set up spaces in their homes to practice and hone their craft. The fall, all-virtual trimester for preprofessional adult is open and a threshold division for 3 to 7 is starting now. “We’ve been pleased to note that these students have improved in many, many ways, notwithstanding the challenges we’re all facing,” she said. “They were all really proud of their efforts. We’re trying to put extra effort into our fundraising, so we can provide these opportunities to students who have been working so hard to push through this and not let it get them down. We want to model ourselves on their resilience.” n

The Perfect Fit MAXWELL SIMKINS JUMPED ON NETFLIX’S ‘THE SLEEPOVER’ BY CHRISTINA FUOCO-KARASINSKI

A

ctor Maxwell Simkins felt there was something special the first time he read the script for Netflix’s “The Sleepover,” which debuts on August 21. “It was really out there,” said the 13-year-old Philadelphia native. His father, John, added, “The script and the story was something we really enjoyed and we’re grateful to have the opportunity.” In the family adventure-comedy, Maxwell plays Kevin, the brother to Clancy (Sadie Stanley). The two discover their stay-at-home mom, Margo (Malin Akerman), is a former high-end thief in a witness protection program. When her mom and dad (Ken Marino) are kidnapped, the siblings must team up to rescue their parents in one night. Directed by Trish Sie (“Pitch Perfect”), the fast-paced “The Sleepover” also stars Joe Manganiello as Margo’s former flame. John said Kevin is a lot like his son. “They’re both really outgoing and adventurous and kind,” he said. “He was able to use his own experiences and personality with Kevin.” Maxwell, who steals the show in “The Sleepover,” isn’t so sure. “My character is a little more over the top,” he said. “He’s like me after a Capri Sun or two.” Maxwell has been acting since he was 6 years old, when he starred as Caleb in the Diane Keaton and Michael Douglas film “And So It Goes.” He’s inspired by the late Cameron Boyce, who died at age 20 in July 2019 due to complications from epilepsy. “I’ve been an actor ever since I saw Cameron Boyce for the first time,” he said. “I was really bullied at times. I want to make people laugh, just as he did. That’s the goal. “I actually met him once. I almost peed myself. It was an out-of-body experience. He was so nice. It’s so tragic.” Maxwell not only wants to make people laugh, but he wants to entertain them. He’s been rapping for a bit. “My mom shared the movie ‘8 Mile’ and there’s just something about they use poetry to express their thoughts,” he said about rapping. “I just fell in love with it immediately. Ever since then I’ve been inspired by Dr. Dre and Rakim and Nas—all the original rappers. The OGs really influenced me.” Up next for Maxwell is the Disney+ series “The Mighty Ducks,” a reboot of the 1992 movie. “I’m from Philly, so I skated a bit back east,” he said. “They did put me in a boot camp for skating in Vancouver and we’re going to do it again.” In the meantime, Maxwell hopes fans enjoy “The Sleepover.” “I hope everyone learns from the movie that, through thick or thin, friends will be friends and family comes first,” he said. n 08.20.20 | PASADENA WEEKLY 13

FANTASTIC NEGRITO, Have You Lost Your Mind Yet? (Cooking Vinyl): HHHH

With a title echoing everyday conversations nationwide (from opening stomper “Chocolate Samurai”), the resilient Oakland artist’s urgent new release taps into 2020’s chaos and ground-shifting change. He still reaches back to blues like a rejuvenating touchstone — his 2016 and 2019 Grammy Awards were both for Best Contemporary Blues Album — but these 11 tracks revel in funk, hip-hop and soul grooves and rock swagger. He’s polished his roots-braiding sound, segueing from streetwise lyrics and handclap percussion into prog-sounding guitars and time signatures. Put this one on replay. Highlights: “I’m So Happy I Cry” with New Orleans dynamo Tank Ball, “How Long” (“Out there screaming all alone/ Full of shit, full of hope, holding on/ We can repeat the same old lies/ ’Til they make us feel alright”). fantasticnegrito.com

TURNING JEWELS INTO WATER, Our Reflection Adorned by Newly Formed Stars (FPE): HHH

More tightly focused than last year’s “Map of Absences,” this globally conscious set plays with time via percussion colored and shaped by digital effects. Indian-born, Brooklyn-based drummer/composer Ravish Momin collaborated remotely with Haitianborn percussionist/turntablist Val Jeanty in Boston, with guest vocals from Iranian daf player Kamyar Arsani and South African multi-instrumentalist Mpho Molikeng — so this spring’s shutdown didn’t impede recording. But it does seem to have drained the music of the rubbery warmth of “Map of Absences”; save for the deftly patterned “Kerala in My Heart” and tense title track, it’s more angular than melodic. turningjewelsintowater.wordpress.com

SYLVIE SIMMONS, Blue on Blue (Compass): HHH½

The disarming humor and intelligence that brighten the celebrated music journo’s prose also gleam through this poetic follow-up to her eponymous 2014 album debut. “Waiting for the Shadows to Fall” unfolds like a memory shared between songs at one of Simmons’ concerts, her graceful natural images and ukulele burnished by Brian Lopez’s evocative guitar solo and fills. A deceptively cheery melody and Simmons’ unaffected vocals sharpen the surprise of “The Thing They Don’t Tell You About Girls” (“Since you’re gone I keep away/ From bridges, trains and razor blades”), while “Nothing” devastates with spare simplicity and her inner hippie hits the honky-tonk for “1000 Years Before I Met You,” a good-natured duet with producer Howe Gelb. sylviesimmons.com

DENT MAY, Late Checkout (Carpark Records): HHH

Breezy, AM-style pop from a native Mississippian turned Angeleno with a knack for hooky pop melodies. Dent’s fifth album is brightened by upbeat ’70s guitar and electric keyboard sounds and ear-catching arrangements that cushion his earnest tenor. In a time of high anxiety, balmy tracks such as “Bungalow Heaven” (“I can’t wait to grow old here”), “L.A. River,” the almost topical “Bless Your Heart” and ingratiating summer confection “Sea Salt + Caramel” offer a sweet antidote. RIYL the Morning Yells, Andrew Gold, Beach Boys. dentmay.com

14 PASADENA WEEKLY | 08.20.20

GORDON KOANG, Unity (Music in Exile/ Light in the Attic): HHH½

Gracefully plying the unwieldy, box-like thom, South Sudan’s “King of Music” and percussionist cousin Paul Biel deliver genuine uplift with their 11th album — their first since seeking asylum in Australia when civil war exploded in South Sudan in 2013. Blind since birth, Koang sends money back to his family, a situation addressed on the hopeful “Te Ke Mi Thile Ji Kuoth Nhial (We Don’t Have a Problem With Anyone).” Themes of peace and tolerance define this cheery set, energized by Australian rock musicians whose supportive brio mostly offsets their lack of finesse with the central African rhythms driving tracks such as “South Sudan” and infectious anthem “Stand Up (Clap Your Hands).” gordonkoang.bandcamp.com

CIDNY BULLENS, Walkin’ Through This World (self-released): HHHH

Bullens’ ninth solo album traces his transgender journey from androgynously styled, Grammynominated pop-rocker Cindy to gritty-voiced Cidny, a transition that previously inspired his one-person show “Somewhere Between: Not an Ordinary Life.” Handsomely co-produced with Ray Kennedy — sonically, the album sounds like a lost Lucinda classic, flecked with slide and 12-string guitars and harmonies from guests including Rodney Crowell, Mary Gauthier, and Bullens’ daughter Reid — melodic standouts such as “Purgatory Road,” “Sugartown” and “The Gender Line” translate that emotionally complex source material into universally relatable hopes and desires. cidnybullens.com

RB MORRIS, Going Back to the Sky (Singular): HHH½

Playwright, poet, producer, songwriter, actor, editor: the numerous hats the Knoxville Renaissance man’s worn throughout his respected career shaped his vision and the 14 narratives he spins here with atmospheric support from guitarist/co-producer Bo Ramsey, violinist David Mansfield and harmonica ace Mickey Raphael. Inviting melodies and lyrics braided with metaphor and sly humor make for a satisfying musical journey, particularly if you’ve a taste for Hayes Carll, Malcolm Holcombe and Mickey Newbury. Highlights: “Red Sky,” “Missouri River Hat Blowing Incident,” the Morris-Ramsey co-write “Montana Moon” (“We’re rolling slow Dustbo, running on faith and fumes/ Looking for somewhere, anywhere, got to be something soon”). RBMorris.com

RUTH ORHIUNU, …They’ll Say I’m Talking (self-released): HH½

The UK soul singer’s debut EP is uneven but it’s clear she has a lot to say, and a compellingly sultry voice with which to make herself heard. Her ex-texting neediness threatens to overwhelm the pensive hip-hop rhythms of “Sometimes,” where she asks hard questions (“Who do we become when we forget ourselves”) before making excuses for herself (“I let my demons take me out sometimes/ I always come back to my senses in the end”). She strikes a steadier balance with “Loving Goes Down” and “Love Is Blind,” slow-burn jams that occasionally recall Soul II Soul. ruthorhiunu.bandcamp.com
