omen’s Equality Day is commemorated every year on August 26, which, by the time you read this, has already happened. Making it especially special this year, August 26 marked the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, also known as the Susan B. Anthony amendment. We finally won the right to vote after 72 years of petitioning, proclaiming, picketing, conversing, cajoling, begging, beatings, getting arrested, hunger striking, and marching. Otherwise, it was easy. We have come a long, long way, baby, and certainly not far enough. The huge asterisk to winning the “right” to vote in 1920 benefitted white women except for Black women in the North. And now, with the renewed assault on voting rights imposed by Cheetos-for-Brains in the White House, we’re facing yet another round of disenfranchisement. On the other hand, there were events and entertainment this year that I never dreamed we’d see become mainstream. You can’t get much more “main street” than the Tournament of Roses Parade on New Year’s Day. On January 1, 2020—which seems like a lifetime ago—I had the honor of marching in the Rose Parade with 99 other people dressed in vintage suffrage whites with our purple, gold and white sashes. We were called “Outwalkers,” and our formation duplicated the spectacle of the legendary 1913 March in Washington, D.C., that featured many original American suffragists, including Ida B. Wells, who insisted on integrating the marchers. Go, Ida!! Our suffrage float in front of the Outwalkers was stunning. We saw people crying with joy as we paraded by, and I was choked-up most of the time. Our float had a Statue of Liberty, and a VIP section comprised of the descendants of suffragists and abolitionists. My favorite VIP, of course, was Dolores Huerta, a friend, mentor and champion of women everywhere. The weather was perfect, and the subtle perfume of roses and citrus wafted through the air. In late January 2020, we got the news that Virginia had become the 38th state to ratify the 28th Amendment, otherwise known as the Equal Rights Amendment. Hurrah! If you think the United States is over its institutionalized misogyny, think again. Alice Paul, Quaker Suffragist, introduced the ERA in 1923. And now, after 97 years, it’s hung up because our rottento-the-core Justice Department has “barred” it from being registered with the National Archives. Yes, Attorney General Barr and his White House bosses have ordered that the ERA not be registered, despite it finally being ratified. What are

all those Dudes and turncoat Ms. Dudes so afraid of? Liberty and justice for all? Meanwhile, here we are in August, an important month for women’s history. The New York Times sponsored a virtual play called “Finish the Fight,” which was beautifully acted, directed and produced given the COVID circumstances. The show told the stories of unknown and unsung women of color through history who fought for suffrage. Yay! It’s about time and long overdue. That said, the play had a considerable amount of fury aimed at white women as if white women are responsible for the lack of attention to any women in history? I have been on the frontlines of promoting and applauding women in history for decades. Just because something isn’t published doesn’t mean it’s not being written about. I never saw anything about women or girls in any of the history books I grew up on, and the latest text I saw (granted I haven’t reviewed every textbook in all 50 states) had a paragraph that only spoke in generalities. A sample would be, “In 1920, Congress granted the women of the U.S. the right to vote, blah, blah, blah.” First of all, they didn’t grant us anything, we fought every inch over 72 years to get the right to vote. So, hey everyone, let’s stop fighting over one lame paragraph in textbooks and instead get really angry at the systemic sexism and racism in this country. This is not an apology for callous white women of which there are plenty; it is, however, a “hat tip” to my hero and mentor: Black civil rights and feminist attorney, Florynce Kennedy. Funny as hell, she warned women against what she called “horizontal hostility.” What’s horizontal hostility? It’s when one subjugated group attacks another subjugated group while forgetting that this is precisely what the dominating group wants! As in, “pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!” Hey, gals, don’t fight each other: fight the system in meaningful, substantial ways instead, starting with…voting! Given that all things are women’s issues, one issue saw remarkable progress this year: no mass shootings. And yes, gun violence is a human rights issue, therefore a woman’s issue. So please get all your loved ones registered and make a plan for voting. If you have out of state family and friends, help them to get their voting ducks in a row. Do it for the people who died or were beaten for voting, and for your foremothers who dreamed of the day they could cast a ballot. n Ellen Snortland has written Consider This… for the Pasadena Weekly for decades. FINALLY APPROVED

PASADENA CITY COUNCIL OKS POLICE OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE, INDEPENDENT AUDITOR BY MATTHEW RODRIGUEZ

I

n about a week after the officer-involved death of 32-year-old Anthony McClain, the Pasadena City Council continued its discussion on the creation of a police oversight commission. “The events of last week and the murder of Anthony McClain by Pasadena Police Officers show the need of oversight more than ever before,” Pasadena resident Catherine O’Neal-Petterson wrote for public comment during the meeting. The gravity of the situation was displayed through the nearly three and half hours needed for public comments. “The police cannot police themselves. This has been proven over and over again,” O’Neal-Petterson continued. “How many more Black people have to die at the hands of the Pasadena Police Department before the city government stops serving itself and instead serves the citizens it is supposed to protect?” McClain, a Black man, was a passenger in a vehicle during a traffic stop near La Pintoresca Park. While fleeing from the police during the stop, he was shot in the back and later died at the hospital. According to police officials, McClain, a lifelong Pasadena resident, pulled a firearm out of his waistband as he ran away. McClain’s family lawyer disputes that claim. Police officials said that a gun was recovered on the scene. While the bodycam footage was released last Monday, during the pursuit, the officer who shot McClain had his camera turned off. “It’s not clear at this point if he thought he activated it and it just didn’t activate, or if he didn’t even attempt to activate it,” Lt. Bill Grisafe said to Pasadena Star-News. According to Grisafe, the button that activates the camera must be pressed twice. Grisafe and Police Chief John Perez admitted that they have made the mistake of not turning on their body cameras while on duty. In the week following the death, residents marched and protested outside city hall, the Pasadena Police Department and Mayor Terry Tornek’s home demanding answers from the city. “The officer-involved shooting is terrible, there’s a loss of life involved here and it’s always catastrophic — [especially with] the focus on the relationship between minority communities and police departments, it’s very fraught,” Tornek said in an interview with this newspaper. According to Tornek, the discussion of the police oversight commission was not accelerated by McClain’s death, but was slated for discussion prior to the shooting. The discussion of the police oversight committee began in 2016, however it was somewhat forgotten until the officer-involved death of 46-year-old George Floyd in late May in Minneapolis. After four years, the city council unanimously voted to create a police oversight commission. “I had made a commitment shortly after the George Floyd killing in Minneapolis,” Tornek said. “I signed the Obama Foundation pledge that we would go through a process and try to bring it to a conclusion within 90 days. I committed to doing it in 60 days. I was working against a self-imposed deadline that was long before the McClain shooting.” The council met a day after the officer-involved shooting of 29-year-old Black man Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Blake was shot in a similar fashion as McClain, shot in the back while evading police. The two officers involved in the Blake shooting were placed on leave while the two officers involved with the McClain shooting were not. During the meeting Vice Mayor Tyron Hampton asked for information about the employment status of the two officers, City Manager Steve Mermell declined to answer due to the privacy rights afforded to the officers during the investigation. “Those statement would require revealing information involving the personnel status of an employee,” City Attorney Michele Bagneris said after Mermell declined to answer. “At this point it would be inappropriate and perhaps violative of rights to specify that information in a public forum.” In response, Hampton expressed his discontent with the lack of transparency. “The fact that we can’t even hold those that have the most power accountable and throw up our hands and say that ‘it’s the legal law and we’ll let that person fight for their job back,’” Hampton said. “This man was shot in the back because his friend didn’t have a front license plate… This was a poor decision by that officer that will change his life

forever… Make this man fight for his job back. Fire this officer.” He continued acknowledging the magnitude of the situation referencing the killing of Floyd a few months ago. “This young man is never going to be able to come home,” Hampton said in an impassioned speech about McClain. “That young man could be me. That young man could be my nephew. That young man could be my nextAnthony McClain door neighbor. Unless we start holding people accountable then this will continue to happen.” The pleas of Hampton and many residents were finally answered when the city council unanimously passed the new police oversight model after eight hours of discussion. The model consists of an 11-member civilian commission and an independent auditor, who would work in an advisory role. The city council will appoint eight members, one for each councilmember, and another three will be chosen by community groups such as the ACLU and NAACP. The committee would have subpoena powers which can be used to acquire documents from the police department, however, the documents could not be used to influence the employment or discipline of any personnel. Each member must go through a thorough vetting process and must complete 30 hours of training after their appointment. The council discussed several powers which may be given to the commission such as subpoena power, but would require an ammendment to the city’s charter which could only be done through a ballot measure. The oversight commission may be granted more power in 2022 election but again must be approved by voters through a ballot measure. n

COVID COUNT Reported Cases in Pasadena and surrounding areas as of Monday, August 24 South Pasadena: 242; Alhambra: 1101; Altadena: 582; Arcadia: 429; Glendale: 2929; Monrovia: 656; San Gabriel: 541; Total Confirmed Cases in Pasadena: 2,291 Total Deaths in Pasadena: 111 Total Confirmed Cases in LA County: 231,695 Total Deaths in LA County: 5,545 • COVID-19 seems to be plateauing in Pasadena after cases and deaths drop. For over two weeks, the Pasadena Health Department has not reported a new coronavirus death and new cases have dropped to an average of about 11 per day. This is the best week Pasadena has had since June where there were no deaths reported for eight days. Huntington Hospital is treating 33 COVID-19 related patients as of August 23. • Orange County has been removed off of the state’s coronavirus watchlist after a surge in July. If the positive trend continues, students K-12 will be allowed to resume in-person classes. Los Angeles County is close behind, fulfilling five out of the six criteria laid out by the state. The only item left to be fulfilled is the per-capita rate of people testing positive for the virus. According to county officials, the case rate has dropped to 275 per 100,000 but believes it fall below 200 per 100,000. Once the case rate drops to below 200, officials will be issuing waivers to allow schools to reopen campuses. • A man returning to Hong Kong has been reported to be the first person to be reinfected with the novel coronavirus. The 33-year-old man first contracted the virus in April and discovered he was reinfected after an airport screening prior to his flight from Europe back to Hong Kong. According to scientists from the University of Hong Kong, believe that subsequent infections may cause milder symptoms. Researchers also claim the strain that the man hand somewhat resembled other stains of the coronavirus similar to the common cold. — Information Complied by Matthew Rodriguez 08.27.20 | PASADENA WEEKLY 5

The first planning meeting for Odyssey Games Pasadena was held at BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse with future owner Paul Zuber, Game Empire’s longtime general manager Robert Hermann and operations manager Richard Chung.

Gaming dynasty Robbins ran Game Empire for 13 years and he was well loved. Chung officiated Robbins’ wake at the store on February 29, held the day before his funeral. Robbins was a lawyer for 20 years, but after his father died, he wanted to spend more time with his family. His brother, Cliff, owns Game Empire in San Diego, so Robbins moved his family to Pasadena for the store’s second location. Robbins’ wife, Jeannie, took over the ownership and running of the store, however, due to COVID, she closed it in May. After she shuttered it, her family encouraged Chung to find a new store owner to carry on Robbins’ lifelong dream. Robbins once wrote, “I have played tabletop games for over 40 years and I’ve spent a lot of time and money on gaming. Unfortunately, a good portion of that money was wasted on stuff I didn’t really like playing. For that reason, I built Game Empire to be a place ‘where gamers help gamers.’” Chung visited Game Empire for the first time in 2012 and feels blessed to be part of the gaming community. “We really care for the community,” he said. “Community is a big thing for us. Chuck really wanted to build a community with Game Empire. He wanted gamers to make friends and to have people to play the games with. That was always a priority. The people here at Odyssey are the same people who got to know each other because of the community at Game Empire.” He met Hermann and Zuber through the community. Chung officiated Hermann’s wedding, too. The trio said it’s important to keep this going. “The fellowship we have with one another is an important part of life,” Chung said. “The fact that we have games as a common denominator really ties us together.” n

hen Game Empire’s owner Chuck Robbins passed away in February, his friends and fellow gamers couldn’t let the entrepreneur’s dream die, too. “Chuck’s philosophy was that Game Empire would be a place where people could join a community of gamers and find friendship and support,” said Richard Chung, who worked as the store’s part-time bookkeeper. “He succeeded brilliantly.” Recently, Odyssey Games opened, thanks to Chung, who serves as operations manager, and new owner Paul Zuber, in the same Pasadena location. Robert Hermann returned as the general manager. They’re dubbing it “our new 2.0 game store.” “It took a lot of work and effort to make this happen, but I am thrilled about the future of our gaming community,” Chung said. “Paul is a member of our Game Empire community and it has been such a pleasure getting to know him and to hear about his plans for the store.” Chung said Zuber intends to continue building the Game Empire community, with some improvements, like replacing the carpeting. Like the first floor, the second floor has gaming tables and pinball machines now. Odyssey Games focuses on board games, puzzles, Pokémon, Dungeons and Dragons, Warhammer 40,000, Magic: The Gathering, miniatures, and paint and hobby supplies. Zuber has maintained its Newbie Night, Boardgame Night, tournaments, Pokémon Gym and other events. “We have Newbie Night, where we invite people to come in on Tuesday nights to learn games, even though they may not have any experience,” Chung said. “Not only do they learn the game, they meet the people. Tuesdays were our biggest nights before the pandemic. We have special events every night. Boardgame Wednesday, hobby nights on Thursdays, where they paint different things together, build models and paint little miniature soldiers together.” Magic: The Gathering is played on Mondays and Fridays, and Sunday is family night. Saturday is set aside for role-playing games and special tournaments. “For now, our gaming is limited to outdoors,” Chung said. “We have a few tents outside in the parking lot. Once the COVID restrictions are lifted, we will have about numerous tables in the building.”

‘THE POETICS OF CLIMATE CHANGE’ SANDRA TSING LOH RECOMMENDS WATCHING IN PJS WITH WINE BY JANA MONJI

S

andra Tsing Loh was struggling with the weekend’s surreal California landscape, crossing the state lengthwise, last weekend. She was returning from Northern California where she delivered her youngest daughter to a Berkeley dorm as the California fires raged and COVID strategies brought confusion and silver linings. The orange skylines of NorCal and that epic firenado have sparked talk about global warming and that's just what Loh will be considering as host for the Broad Stage’s Red Hen Press Poetry Hour on Thursday, August 27, a free program on Facebook Live at 6 p.m. Fans of Loh may be familiar with her ruminations on global warming in her play “Hot,” where she fought a losing battle to be a better eco citizen than her brother and her The Loh Down on Science podcast has also featured segments on the issue. “Previous to this time, climate change was arguably the world’s most pressing issue. Unfortunately, it was politicized,” Loh said. Loh has been living a low-key life under COVID-19 restrictions. Although her new book, “The Madwoman and the Roomba” came out on June 2, COVID-19 forced the cancellation of the book tour and related events. Instead, Loh hosted COVID-safe curbside pickups of her book that included free swag (goddess pants) at her Pasadena home every Saturday in June and July. “It was a fantastic person-to-person almost performance art way of visiting,” Loh said. There was “a more old-fashioned slowing down way of visiting.” Check her website (sandratloh.ag-sites.net) for future events. The pandemic does have some plus points. Although her daughter missed many senior year perks (senior prom, grad night and the senior musical), COVID-19 restrictions meant the UC campus and the dorm were at 25% capacity—no roommates. Although they originally intended to visit relatives on the way up, the air quality was too bad to stand outside and chat. Still, once the decision was made to be on campus, Loh was determined to get there and have her one hour to unload the kid “even if the room is filled with hot boiling lava and there’s a T-Rex in there.” Luckily, she didn't have to “throw cans of Progresso soup at the dinosaur,” yet the whole experience of driving toward “an angry devil-red dot fringed weirdly by blue.” Graduating from Caltech with a BS in physics in 1983, in 2005 Loh reconnected with the institute when Caltech and KPCC created a podcast for Loh to host “The Loh Down on Science.” The show is co-produced by LDOS Media Lab, Inc. and SCPR (Southern California Public Radio), in association with the University of California, Irvine Science Communications. The actual content is researched, written and edited by students from the UC Irvine School of Physical Sciences, School of Biological Sciences and School of Engineering. The 90-second show, which was just added to Google News in May is broadcast five times a week to over 4 million listeners on 150 public radio stations across the country, including the Armed Forces Radio, so it strives to not have a particular political stance, but fully embraces science and scientific thought. “I knew what it felt like to be confused by science,” Loh said, but in her program, she hopes to make it more accessible so that her listeners “understand it and feel comfortable with it.” She also hopes to change children’s view of scientists. “When children see mad scientists in movies, it doesn't make them want to become a scientist. They think it’s weird and dangerous and kind of smelly.” Even Doc Brown on the “Back to the Future” trilogy, whose fictional home was Pasadena's Gamble House, was just a “wacky scientist with wild white hair wearing a lab coat.” Loh and her “Hive” mean to foster a different image. They’ve even made special 50 pandemic podcasts to help people better understand pandemics and their effects on people—not all of them bad. “Sometimes a global crisis can foster incredible technological innovations.” In a follow-up email, Loh declared, “I believe a silver lining in this pandemic is that everyone compelled by the stories/research of science due to wanting to ‘solve’ COVID.” The Red Hen Press Poetry Hour has also benefited by going virtual. Loh be-

Sandra Tsing Loh

lieves it is attracting a better following and one doesn’t have to get dressed and face the freeway. Beginning its first season just two weeks after shutdown (March 28) with Loh coming in last-minute as the host, it is now on its second season. The hour seeks to engage people by presenting different poets addressing different topics. This Thursday’s “The Poetics of Climate Change,” includes panelists poet/ naturalist Elizabeth Bradfield (“Towards Antarctica”) and science journalist/playwright Alanna Mitchell. Mitchell’s play, “Sea Sick” about her 13 oceanic journeys to observe manmade chemical changes comes to the Broad next year. Critically acclaimed poet Natalie Diaz (Gila River Indian Tribe member) and 2014 Los Angeles Poet Laureate Luis J. Rodriguez (founding editor of Tia Chucha Press and co-founder/president of Tia Chucha’s Centro Cultural and Bookstore in the San Fernando Valley) and Poet Laureate of Utah Paisley Rekdal will give readings. The Red Hen Press Poetry Hour is part of The Broad Stage at Home, original monthly programming via the online portal that will broadcast through December. So, get comfy on this Thursday (Loh recommends watching “with a glass of wine and in your pajamas”) or check out the past programs and enjoy one of the silver linings of the catastrophic clouds over Pasadena and Los Angeles County. “It’s phenomenal, intimate and free. Tune in.” n

The Big Bird chicken sandwich is a big seller among Funnel Birds Food Truck visitors.

FUNNEL BIRDS: A FIERY FOWL AND FUNNEL CAKE FOOD TRUCK STORY BY FRIER MCCOLLISTER | PHOTOS BY LUIS CHAVEZ

I

n the last 10 years or so, popular interest in food and an explosion of diversity in ingenuity, ingredients and dining concepts evolved dramatically, particularly in Greater Los Angeles’ culinary scene. It could also be argued that the wider boom in popularity and interest in food, restaurants and chefs over the last decade began in Los Angeles, in the wake of grim economic circumstances, not unlike those we face now. The primary cultural, culinary phenomenon that emerged out of the financial crisis of 2008 and sparked a nationwide renewal of popular interest in food still exists and still thrives in the pandemic—food trucks. Roy Choi’s Kogi Taco Truck was the original. A novel fusion of tasty local influences, Choi’s Korean short-rib tacos became a sensation fueled by social media posts and served at a reasonable price from variable locations. Choi still runs four Kogi trucks, one of which parks on Hill Avenue and Locust Street for lunch on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Freed from the burdens of rent, insurance and front-of-house management, the nouvelle food truck concept, as conceived by Choi, provided a low-capital entrée into food for a cadre of inspired young chefs. A variety of trucks began to proliferate. From lobster rolls to gourmet grilled cheese and poutine, the offerings became exotic and imaginative. Many trucks served as bridges for chefs to establish brick and mortar locations, including Choi. In the wake of adversity, the food truck provided a new portal for culinary creativity and imagination, while reducing overhead and improving profit margins. It’s no wonder they are thriving during the pandemic lockdown and that we are very likely about to see a new wave of food trucks soon. Not quite a year old, one of our own locally born food trucks—Funnel Birds—launched in September 2019. Beginning with a “soft opening pop-up” in the Goodyear Tire shop parking lot at Walnut Street and Mar Vista Avenue, Funnel Birds is the brainchild of Nshan Tashchyan, 31, and Tigran Gevorkian, 27, boyhood pals who attended Marshall High School together. Within a few weeks of the soft opening, the pair rolled out their colorfully painted truck onto our streets. By the middle of November, the Funnel Birds truck landed at its customary location on the east side of North Lake Avenue in Altadena, just north of East Calaveras Street, next to Aldi’s. As Nshan explained, “We wanted to stay where we grew up, 8 PASADENA WEEKLY | 08.27.20

in the Pasadena-Altadena area. We wanted to serve that community.” The signature namesake sandwich is a riff on the classic soul food dish of fried chicken and waffles. At the Funnel Birds truck, this comprises Nashville-style “hot chicken”—fried chicken in a spicy crust laden with cayenne pepper—stuffed between two slabs of fresh funnel cake. Yes, funnel cake. Like at the county fair. The sandwich is dressed with cheese, slaw and pickles, and a choice of five heat levels is offered for the chicken, as depicted on a vertical cartoon painted on the truck to the left of the order window. Starting at “country” with no spice and advancing upward to “mild,” “medium,” “hot” and the ominous, “face off!” Painted on the truck, the menu is simple. Aside from the eponymous “Funnel Bird,” “The Big Bird” is basically the same sandwich but with a brioche bun replacing the funnel cake. The “Love Me Tender” eschews any bun for three chicken “Tenders.” The “Nashville Melt” is a spicy grilled cheese take. If you’re just here for the alluring promise of funnel cake, “Funnel Vision” fulfills the urge with hunks of latticed funnel cake dressed out with powdered sugar, whipped cream, fresh strawberries and Nutella. These “entrees” are all priced at $15 and the sandwiches are bedded on well-seasoned crinkle-cut fries. “Nugz”—hot chicken nuggets— and fried pickles are available for $8. The portions are huge. There is also a whiteboard list of specials. After trying the “Funnel Bird,” in which the funnel cake nearly overwhelmed the juicy, perfectly fried cutlet—spiced at “medium”—I returned to sample “Hayk’s Special,” which featured the hot chicken on Texas Toast with extra coleslaw and pickle. Created by Tigran’s

cousin Hayk Kalantarian, it’s a novel twist on the standard menu sandwiches. I ordered Hayk’s version at “medium” heat and an order of the tenders, which I impulsively ask to be prepared at “hot.” Suffice it to say, “medium” provides a manageable challenge, while “hot” delivers a metallic thwack of cayenne that will forcibly rip open your sinuses and make you openly weep like a baby—in a good way. “Face off?” My advice: keep your face on. You might need it. Nshan is unabashedly ambitious and realistic. “The intention from the beginning (was) to get really big, but you gotta start somewhere.” So far, so good. The truck and its hot chicken and funnel cake sandwiches continue to enthrall and accrue enthusiastic raves on Yelp and Instagram. There always seems to be a gaggle of folks ganged on the sidewalk, next to the pick-up window. “We both have a passion for cooking at home,” Tigran said. “Both of our moms are really good cooks! A lot of our spices and seasonings we learned from our moms. Even our coleslaw is not a traditional American coleslaw. It’s actually a kind of Armenian salad that goes along (well) with many fried foods. It’s Nashville hot chicken but with our own twist on it.” Take note Howlin’ Ray! Business dipped predictably for Funnel Birds in the first month of the lockdown but has begun to rebound. The two partners employ a couple of friends to assist in the truck and no layoffs were needed. As to business now? Nshan offers, “It’s decent. We can’t complain.” Dreams of expansion are on hold. “We don’t want to rush into anything right now,” Tigran said. However, the aspirational optimism of these two friends is inspiring. “We’re very excited for the journey that’s coming our way,” he said. Get on board!

• ARTS & CULTURE • GIVING MUSIC A SHOT

SARO PAPARIAN IS ‘INSULATED’ FROM NORTH KINGSLEY’S BUZZ BY CHRISTINA FUOCO-KARASINSKI

S

aro Paparian was living in Armenia and teaching electronic music, when he saw System of a Down in concert celebrating the nation’s centennial. “I was on Shavo’s side of the stage,” he said about bassist Shavo Odadjian. “I remember getting this feeling like, ‘I really love music and I think it might be worth giving it another shot, outside of teaching it. I want to be a part of the process of music, popular music.’” The Pasadena native didn’t anticipate ever being “the guy on the stage.” He worked as a music producer and preferred to stay behind the scenes. He returned to Los Angeles and spent time writing songs between his home state and Armenia. He pushed Armenian bands through an LA management company. In 2017, he decided to go for broke, called a longtime friend Ray Hawthorne and the two decided to give their music a shot. After an unexpected meeting with Odadjian, the three formed North Kingsley, a new musical collaboration that also features lyricist/vocalist Hawthorne and producer Paparian, who joked he plays the laptop. Odadjian plays bass as well as guitar for North Kingsley. The collective released its debut single, the hard-hitting, hip-hop-inspired “Like That?” followed by its parent three-track EP, “Vol. 1,” on August 14 on Odadjian’s 22 Red label. “I’m an Armenian American kid from LA,” Paparian said. “I love this. “It’s nice to finally see it out. People are responding well to it. Ray and I are new to the game. I have a lot of confidence in how he’s guiding us forward. We’re a bit insulated to it (the response), Ray and me. We’re just in the studio working, keeping our heads down.” Paparian said the project is very much a partnership, however, he and Hawthorne are following Odadjian’s guidance. Fans can expect to hear music that is a departure from System of a Down. “It’s something Shavo’s adamant about,” he said. “We’re making music that we want to hear. That’s the fun part about it. This isn’t Shavo’s first rodeo. Even though he’s guiding the ship, when we’re working on the music, he isn’t calling the shots. “He approaches us as bandmates. As a result of that, the music is a nice representation of the three of us. It’s a nice witches brew of all of our backgrounds and creative inclinations. Shavo’s a big hip-hop head and there’s a lot of that going on.” Hometown proud Born and raised in Pasadena, Paparian is thankful for his childhood environment. His father, Bill Paparian, was Pasadena’s mayor from 1995 to 1997. “I was exposed to a lot of events,” he said. “Politics was a standard discussion in the house. My mom, being the kind of Armenian warrior that she is, had a weird mix as I look back now. We had Armenian and American dynamics in the household.” Paparian attended High Point Academy and La Salle College Preparatory. After graduation, he studied at Pasadena City College for a few years and then Cal State Northridge. He worked at the Apple Store while studying at Cal State Northridge and it was there that he met Hawthorne. “We were talking in the store one time when it was slow,” he said. “We found out we were each into hip-hop. I would go every Wednesday to this old beat-up club/bar called The Airliner, which is closed. Ray would go to that as well. “We were doing our own things. I was a guitarist. We just started working together. Ray was doing the production work when we were messing around. I learned a lot about studio production from him.” Three days after graduating university, he told Hawthorne he would see him in six months because he was headed to Armenia.

“I didn’t come back for six years,” he said. “I studied sociology with the plan of going to law school to follow in my dad’s footsteps. That six months turned into six years. I kept music as a hobby. I was going to do music on the side as a hobby.” Paparian is a fourth-generation Armenian American. His great-grandfather, Nishan Paparian, came through Ellis Island from Palu, Western Armenia, moved to the United States in 1907 and married an Irish woman. His mother, Sona, and her family left for Syria to escape genocide. “My dad doesn’t speak a lick of Armenian, but my mom does,” he said. “I went to non-Armenian schools.” Paparian headed to Armenia to get to the family’s roots. His three cousins moved to Armenia from Pasadena when they were young and Paparian was in middle school. “I look at my cousins and I see them as Armenian,” he said. “I was trying to get to my roots and relearn the language. I know both dialects now. “The city (Yerevan) was beautiful. You know, you grow up in Pasadena, you go overseas, and you’re just struck by the romance of the whole thing.” He was offered a job the first summer at the “massive” nonprofit school Tumo Center for Creative Technologies in Yerevan. An administrator told Paparian the music school’s staff and the students wanted to learn more about electronic computer-based music. “I learned so much of what working with Ray,” he said. “They hired me to build up their music department. I got to work with kids and talk to them about music and music production. The job was really fulfilling. My oldest brother still works with Tumo.” When he arrived home, he called Hawthorne to work on music together. They rented a studio from Odadjian’s friend. “(Odadjian) walked in the studio one day and he started talking to me because he saw me working with Logic,” he said about the digital audio workstation and MIDI sequencer software application for the Mac. “He said, ‘I really want to learn this. Would you mind teaching me?’ I love his personality. He has great energy. We struck a really nice rapport. We met up in the studio the first day so I could teach him, and he said, ‘Let’s start making a track.’” That was two years ago, and now North Kingsley—named after the gritty Los Angeles street on which Odadjian grew up—has come to fruition. The band still spends most of their days in the studio creating new songs. “All three of us really care about this,” he said. “Shavo is very detail oriented. He’s an older brother figure for me. Every once in a while, when we’re recording a song, I’ll watch him play guitar and I have this moment of bliss, ‘That’s Shavo from System of a Down.’” n

canning song titles on Grammy-winning jazz pianist Billy Childs’ album “Acceptance,” due Friday from Mack Avenue, one could easily assume it was composed during the coronavirus pandemic: the title track, “Twilight Is Upon Us,” “Do You Know My Name?” But according to Childs, the album tracks a more personal journey. “The older you get, the more you realize that it’s better to deal with things with acceptance than it is to resist what might be inevitable, like aging and the breakdown of the body, the breakdown of relationships — the breakdown of whatever,” says the Sierra Madre resident, who grew up in LA in a family whose discerning tastes helped shape his broad musical palette. “The last stage of grief is acceptance, and that’s where you need to get to if you want to survive, especially living in these days with everything that’s going on in 2020.” Masterfully performed, the music is elegant yet dynamic, flecked with notes of hope, and threaded with memories and inspirations. One highlight is Childs’ graceful arrangement of Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart’s “It Never Entered My Mind;” as Childs’ ruminative piano solo is subtly joined by Hans Glawischnig’s standup bass, it captures the feel of late-night conversations and after-show jams. The song was originally heard in Rodgers & Hart’s 1940 musical comedy “Higher and Higher” and later entered into the Great American Songbook of recorded standards by icons such as Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee and Frank Sinatra. Childs says he first heard it played a decade or so ago by jazz pianist Mulgrew Miller’s trio during a gig at Clancy’s Crab Shack in Glendale and liked it so much that he asked Miller to show it to him; playing it now reminds him of his departed friend. Opening track “Dori” is dedicated to late Brazilian guitarist and composer Dori Caymmi, whom Childs first heard in 1990 at Le Café in the Valley and with whom he later recorded and toured. “Quiet Girl,” inspired by Langston Hughes’ poem “Ardella,” was composed in the mid-1980s and revived and reinterpreted by Childs and his band from his 1988 debut album “Take for Example This…” The players who have Childs’ back throughout “Acceptance” — Glawischnig, drummer Eric Harland and alto saxophonist Steve Wilson — also comprised the core band on his 2017 album “Rebirth,” which won a Best Jazz Instrumental Album Grammy Award. During closing track “Oceana,” Wilson not only helps Childs imbue the music with sounds evoking a marine world, he also shadows Childs’ dramatic keyboard runs and flurries so intuitively it is as though they are extensions of each other’s instruments. “He’s like a musical brother to me,” Childs acknowledges, adding that he recorded the album in New York because that’s where his musicians are based. “Those three guys, we have a chemistry that I like.” That chemistry was essential (as was conguero Munyungo Jackson) for “Leimert Park,” which Childs “spontaneously composed” with Paul

Jackson and Mike Clark in the 1990s — a funky, rubbery, joyous evocation of a time and place that was an invaluable “hub of black culture in Los Angeles” and also significant to the development of Childs’ artistic perspectives. Joined by vocalist Alicia Olatuja and percussionist Rogerio Boccato, they weave a pensive arrangement for “Do You Know My Name?,” about human trafficking. Childs was commissioned to write the piece for Michigan State University’s big band jazz orchestra, and it is one of the few in his oeuvre to feature lyrics. Childs, who’s been performing publicly since he was 6, won’t be touring to promote “Acceptance” (“2020 is gone for live performance”). He recently composed a violin concerto for Rachel Barton Pine that he anticipates being performed at Chicago’s Millennium Park next July, but mostly he’s focusing on interviews, occasional performances on Facebook Live and Zoom, and, like everyone else, trying to stay balanced in our reeling world. “I read an article [that said] one of the key emotional obstacles that could confront you as you get older is the feeling of irrelevance,” he muses. “As you get older, do you even matter to the world anymore? Your level of mattering to the world diminishes, I read in this article. I don’t know that I agree with that. But that’s a major concern. The coronavirus really put that into sharp focus when anybody was concerned about saving their life, and what they had to do to save their life flew in direct conflict with what we need to do as artists. We need people to congregate as artists, but congregating was going to kill people, right? So then you start questioning your relevance as an artist. But on the other hand, when these uprisings started happening, that motivates you as an artist, because art and music define a political movement or can illustrate it or inspire it. With all of that, you start feeling relevant.” “Acceptance” feels of this moment, even though Childs finished recording in January. He says he sought to make it clear that “acceptance is not resignation. It’s not giving up. It’s being at peace with things that you might not want to happen happening — the death of a friend — and trying to move on, and trying to come to terms with it and become whole again after it. That was the impetus behind that tune, ‘Acceptance,’ and the larger statement I wanted to make with the album.” n Mack Avenue releases “Acceptance” August 28.
