ASU professor encourages students to defy body hair expectations Jorge Salazar • College Times While it may seem hyperbolic to say gender roles rule most facets of our lives, it simply takes looking at the world around us to realize how true that statement is. Societal expectations of what we should and shouldn’t do based on gender affect the way we act, the activities we engage in and the way we look. Dr. Breanne Fahs, associate professor of gender and women studies at ASU, is teaching students at the New College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences that gender-based norms affect us in a personal matter most think they have complete control over: body hair. To shed light on the pervasiveness of gender norms and their effects, Fahs has been challenging students since 2008 to switch them up. “Women grow out their body hair for their legs and their armpits,” says Fahs. “And men shave their legs and armpits for the course of the ten weeks, and

then they keep a weekly journal to sort of talk about what happens along the way.” Fahs’ assignment is in the vein of sociological experiments that deal with breaking invisible social norms and how people react in the face of the rules being challenged. “This is a spin off from the classic sociology assignments that [are] really focused on gender nonconformity and gender norms,” she says. “So it’s designed for students to see norms that may otherwise feel or seem invisible.” Fahs says the experiment opens students’ eyes about society’s notions of femininity, masculinity and power relations. “Who has a stake in what we do with our bodies? That is a very important question for me in my work and also my teaching,” she says. The assignment has received such acclaim that Fahs received the Mary Roth Walsh Teaching the Psychology of Women Award, given through Division 35 of the American Psychological

Association, in 2012. According to a news release by ASU, faculty members from other universities are thinking of using the exercise in their classes, and academic journals, like Psychology of Women Quarterly and Feminism & Psychology, have

published papers about the project. Fahs says feedback from students has also been positive. “The feedback has always been very good,” she says of her students’ reactions. “It really helps that there is kind of a collective energy around it in the classroom. It’s not just one person doing this as one person. It’s a group of people doing it.” Student feedback is also received via the journals they write, which narrate their experiences throughout the semester. She says the journals are so rich and vivid that they’ve become part of the reason she keeps assigning the exercise. “The students confront such a range of people,” Fahs says. “But also the specific techniques of how people control their bodies, or have a stake in what they do with their bodies, even if they’re not directly controlling them.” While Fahs uses romantic partners as an example—women in the class have discussed their boyfriends’ reactions to the experiment—other less expected sources of conflict have been recorded. “A lot of people have intense encounters with coworkers,” she says. “A woman who was a server in a restaurant, her boss was like ‘you cannot serve food and have people seeing your armpit hair.’” Fahs’ exercise boils down to the notion of choice, which many believe they have over their bodies and actions. “That doesn’t always translate in reality,” she says. “What I see, both in doing this assignment but also in looking at literature about these topics, [is that] women really struggle with far less sense of choice about their bodies, so that the range of acceptable choices is much smaller than it is for men.” Fahs thinks of this assignment as a “gateway drug” to thinking about more serious and complicated topics, such as racism, homophobia and living as an obese person. “This assignment helps students get a taste in thinking about what happens when your body is marked as ‘other,’ and how does that actually affect you and how it affects others,” Fahs says. “It sounds kind of silly to some people. I notice people think it’s sort of trivial, but I think it’s amazingly profound. People think about much deeper things as a result of it.”

Bars + Games— What could be better Endgame

If you have ever wanted to dance, play games, drink fancy cocktails, chat up a DJ and watch go-go dancers while climbing lots of stairs and dealing with expensive parking, GypsyBar is your one-stop bar. They opened in 2012 next to Lucky Strike in CityScape and share a menu with the bowling alley.

The folks that will enjoy Endgame the most are true gamers. This place is a haven for nerds, geeks, dorks and weirdos—and we mean that in the best way possible. The bar is on Mill Avenue above Bank of America and across from the ASU engineering computer lab. It will open full-time this fall.

Game selection: The game selection is not ideal. They have around 40 “arcade” games including Guitar Hero, Deal or No Deal and Pac-Man Battle Royale Deluxe. They also have skeeball and pool (which are technically in Lucky Strike’s territory), which are probably the two most tempting games. You can also win prizes if you score big.

Game selection: Endgame has every single console you could desire with over 500 games titles. You can switch between a Gamecube, PS4, N64, SNES and Genesis without even scratching the surface of their collection. They also have several old school arcade favorites and board games. The only way they could oneup themselves is with PC games like League of Legends and Starcraft II.

Bar selection: The cocktails are all traditional with a twist, and while their wine and beer selection is extensive, it doesn’t take any risks. All the beers are standard best sellers, although the prices are a bit steep throughout. How does a margarita cost $14 to make? Atmosphere: GypsyBar doesn’t really know what kind of a bar it wants to grow up to be. The space is ample and it is ideal for a show or performance, but as a regular bar it has awkward vibes. Overall: The games are just an afterthought and bunched together in an uninviting way. You won’t find anything too special or unique, which is a shame because getting to CityScape is already a massive feat. It’s a high stress environment outside and a dud inside. GypsyBar, 50 W. Jefferson Street, Phoenix, 602.732.5490, gypsybarphx. com

Bar selection: N/A When we visited Endgame they were still waiting on their liquor license, which is also what is preventing them from opening fulltime. There was a great soda selection, but soon they hope to fill their taps with local beers and serve themed cocktails. Atmosphere: The entire place feels like a huge, decked out den that a video game-loving teenager created for their friends. There are little pockets of comfy sitting areas all over, where friends huddle together to play and socialize. It’s laid back and friendly in a way you won’t find anywhere else on Mill Avenue. Overall: Endgame is everything Mill desperately needs. It’s a fun place to hang with your friends, and despite being a bar, alcohol will only be an added bonus to the array of fun they already have going for them. Endgame, 699 S. Mill Avenue, Suite 201, Tempe, endgamebar.com

EndGame Gringo Star Cool hangout by day, party central by night. Gringo Star, which opened May 2013, has everything you need to get your mind off the stress of the new school year. Food, street art, video games and some sweet daily specials are in abundance at this Mill hot spot. Game selection: What Gringo Star’s game lineup lacks in numbers, it makes up in quality. Walls are lined up with iconic arcade games like Mrs. Pac-Man and Mortal Kombat 3, and two tables have Nintendo 64 staples like Donkey Kong 64 and Mario Kart. Bar selection: They have an extensive craft beer menu, but only a few signature cocktails. None of this matters because they have the longest

happy hour on Mill from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., and everything tastes the same after the third glass. Reason enough for a 9/10. Atmosphere: The aesthetic is hip and perfectly tailored for the college crowd. The chill vibe of the staff makes it the perfect location to hang out and grab some grub with friends in the afternoon. Overall: For a barcade faceoff, Gringo Star’s game lineup was its weakest link. Regardless, it makes up for a lack of quantity with the value of quality. Also, the food is reason enough to check it out. Their menu is full of gourmet street food worth the trip. Gringo Star, 501 S. Mill Avenue, Tempe, 480.306.8633, gringostarstreetbar. com

SHOWDOWN

What’s the best video game to play as a group? Mike Casten

“Left For Dead is awesome. Who doesn’t like zombies?”

Dave & Buster’s Dave & Buster’s might be corporate, but it’s an adult playground that just can’t be knocked. It’s a packed party on the weekends with more than half of its space devoted to games. Plus, they developed a bit of genius with the Dave & Buster’s Power Card, which forces you to convert your real money into fake money that can only be used on games. Game selection: Dave & Buster’s know their audience. If you’re looking for an ‘80s-style video arcade, you’ll want to skip D&B. If you want to play Guitar Hero with friends, have a dance off or play slot-style games, this is the spot for you. D&B also gets high marks for its trivia game, which pays out the big ‘tix for a little brain power. Bar selection: D&B has your standard selection of cocktails, wine and beer, including some local selections. The biggest downside of drinking here is that the drinks are expensive. Not that we’d know, but you could totally maybe sneak in a flask and totally maybe just order a (wink wink) soda. Atmosphere: We think “It’s Always Sunny in Philidelphia” put it best: “If you’re looking for a better

Adam Tinkman

TheKing steak in an arcade setting, you are shit out of luck.” Actually, the food here kind of sucks, but if you’re looking for a clean, noncontroversial gaming environment, D&B might be your thang. Overall: D&B’s biggest selling point is that it’s close to campus, but it’s not exactly a gamer bar. If you’re a hardcore gamer, you best look elsewhere. If you want to play casino-style games without the gambling addiction, this might be your place.

The King In the former spot of the The Western, The King is a mellow hangout amongst the hubbub of Old Town Scottsdale. Owned by men-about-town Charlie Levy, Tucker Woodbury and Tyler Christensen, the trio hopes the barcade will flourish where The Western failed. Game selection: Gathering mostly nostalgic games like Street Fighter, pinball and foosball, The King’s strongpoint is that they’ve sectioned off a back room for gaming. You don’t need to dart around drunks to play your arcade favorites. However, the game selection is

fairly limited and some games are expensive. (For example, skeeball is a dollar per game.) They also have some classic tabletop games like Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots. Bar selection: It’s nothing special, but they do have a few bizarro cocktails that might be worth your while. (The Alcoholic Salad is “cucumber vodka and stuff.” Sounds...healthy?) Other than that, selections of national and local draft beer are in cans and on tap, and the bar is stocked with all the traditional liquor you need. Atmosphere: This is where The King gets high marks from us. It’s a lived-in, homey vibe with chalkboard art throughout the entire bar. You can even draw on the walls yourself! The game room is fun, if not a little cold feeling, but it warms up as the bar becomes crowded. Overall: If you just can’t take the see-and-be-seen vibe of Old Town, or you’re gearing up to see a show at the next-door Stand Up Scottsdale, The King is a good option for a great time without the pretentiousness.

STUDENT LIFE

ASU announces new tailgating regulations What you need to know in the hours before kickoff Christina Caldwell • College Times Arizona State University and Sun Devil Athletics announced in late July that the school will implement new tailgating restrictions for the upcoming school year, including banning kegs, beer bongs, beer pong and other drinking games from designated parking lots surrounding Sun Devil Stadium. The goal is to reduce the over consumption of alcohol. With ASU’s party school reputation, the school has suffered its fair share of public relations nightmares relating to alcohol over the past couple years. Just last semester, 19-year-old Naomi McClendon fell to her death from the 10th story of 922 Place apartment complex in Tempe after a night of heavy partying. ASU freshman and Sigma Alpha Epsilon member Jack Culolias was found in the river adjoining Tempe Town Lake after a night of drinking at Tempe Marketplace in 2012. Just a few months later, 20-year-old Aiden Mohr, also a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, consumed 20 shots of tequila on his birthday when his lips started to turn blue. His BAC was five times the legal limit when he was dropped off at the front entrance of a local hospital. Friends left him with a sticky note that read, “I’ve been drinking and I need some help.” His fellow partygoers abandoned him for fear of receiving a citation, police say. The frat has since been banned from campus, but needless to say, alcohol safety has become a priority for ASU. “The safety of Sun Devil Nation and the guests who visit Sun Devil Stadium is a primary concern,” says Ray Anderson, vice president for University Athletics, in a press release. “Tailgating is one of the great traditions of football, but we are encouraging our fans and visitors to act responsibly on game day. There is a lot of fun to be had at a Sun Devil football game, especially on the field.”

The new parameters were suggested by the Statewide Student Safety Task Force to the Arizona Board of Regents. Northern Arizona University and the University of Arizona will also implement the same practices. So things are changing, but just how much? What is and isn’t allowed during your next tailgate? Here’s the breakdown: KEGS All kegs will be banned from ASU designated tailgating parking lots come the first home game versus Weber State on August 28. This is known as “common source alcohol,” which will also be banned. This might include liquor cocktails like jungle juice in a large cooler. DRINKING APPARATUSES Don’t think you can get around this by fashioning your own beer bong and calling it a “barley slip ‘n slide.” The cops will be keeping an eye out for these kinds of “drinking apparatuses,” so watch out. DRINKING GAMES According to ASU Athletics, drinking games like beer pong encourage reckless consumption of alcoholic beverages. This also includes shotgunning beers, keg stands and flip cup. If you can create a game centered around drinking, ASU will crush it. GLASS BOTTLES AND CONTAINERS Only aluminum and plastic will be allowed during tailgates, so be prepared to recycle. ASU is all about going green, and it’s just the right thing to do. LIQUOR Your drinking options are limited to beer and wine only, according to ASU Athletics. This one will be more difficult to enforce, so if you’re going to drink liquor, at least be covert about it.

ASU’s D.J. Foster playing against Washington.

D.J. Foster, ASU Football Mike Tulumello · College Times D.J. Foster is one of the most heralded recruits ever to sign with ASU Football, having been a USA Today Sports firstteam All American selection when he was a do-everything star at Scottsdale’s Saguaro High School. Now, he is one of the leaders of the nationally-ranked Sun Devil football team as a dynamic player who can both run the ball and catch passes. College Times: It was a big deal for ASU to get you to come here. Now that you’ve been here for a couple years, what do you think? Is it what you expected? D.J. Foster: I’m 100 percent happy with my decision. Coming here, I knew I would have a chance to play early. The people I’ve met, the coaching I’ve got here, and the community, I wouldn’t have it any other way. Surely you were well prepared, but is there anything about big-time college football that surprised you? Just how many people are really involved. How many people truly care about their college football team all across the country. And the Sun Devil community. It’s amazing to me how many people are paying attention, how much support they give. It’s definitely a blessing. What are you majoring in? Communications. I’m kind of still shop-

14

ping around, figuring out what I want to do. When it’s all said and done, I want to be an entrepreneur type, own my business. Or work in sports broadcasting. Something along those lines. Do you think you’ll play all four years? Or will the NFL come calling a year early? I really don’t think about it too much. I’ve been getting asked that a lot. At the end of the day, you can’t control that. As long as you take care of business in what’s in front of you, everything else will fall into place. I don’t put too much thought into that. I have a long season ahead of me. When you were a senior at Saguaro, they had a freshman named Christian Kirk. Now he’s a senior. Are you involved in any recruiting or are you steering him here? He’s a friend of mine. At the end of the day, that’s all he is. It’s tough to define that line, between a friend, and I’m also here trying to push him one way. He knows how I feel. He knows I would love for him to come here. But the most important thing I can do for him is be a friend and be a big brother to him. No matter where he goes, I’m going to support him. Of course, I’d love for him to come here. But at the end of the day, I just want him to be happy. This team is ranked No. 19 in the AP poll and Coach Graham is talking you guys up, too. Are you as good as

AUGUST 28 - SEPTEMBER 10, 2014 • ECOLLEGETIMES.COM

you’re cracked up to be? I think we are a very good team. But I try to tell my teammates, “Don’t listen to all that stuff. Don’t even worry about that.” We’ve always had out backs against the wall. I feel year in and year out, we have a little chip on our shoulder. I’d rather play like that. I’d rather be the underdog, third in the Pac-12 South. I like that. Preseason means absolutely nothing. It’s just a prediction. That’s all it is. I like to prove people wrong. What would it take for this team to run the table, other than getting good luck here and there? To be honest, our second string. I think that’s huge. In a long season, our twodeep guys have to be paying attention. It’s going to somebody who hasn’t been playing much. It’s going to come down to our second-team guys, our third-team guys to make a play and not lose a step. It’s very important. Are there any new players that those of us on the outside don’t know about, that you know about or that we should be looking for? Our running back group. Demario Richard has come in, right when camp started, and he’s made a tremendous effort. I think he’ll be a great running back in this program. And there are guys who have been here, like (receiver) Gary Chambers, who have progressed and matured so much since I’ve been here. Those are guys to watch coming up.

ASU Football vs. Weber State, The Devils may have to put up 50 points a game until all of their new defense players can settle in. Fortunately, the trio of quarterback Taylor Kelly, running back D.J. Foster and receiver Jaelen Strong are just about the most explosive combination that exists in college football. Weber State offers the Devils the first of two opportunities this season to pound a team named the Wildcats. Sun Devil Stadium, 500 E. Veterans Way, Tempe, 480.727.0000, Thursday, August 28, 7:30 p.m., $25-$325 Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Colorado Rockies, This is a dog-days-of-August battle between two teams struggling through disappointing seasons. The D-Backs are getting some nice pitching from surprising sources, but they struggle to score in the absence of injured slugger Paul Goldschmidt. The Rockies are just plain bad. Chase Field, 401 E. Jefferson Street, Phoenix, 602.514.8400, Friday, August 29, 6:40 p.m., $10-$145 ASU Women’s Soccer vs. Oklahoma State, This is a tough test for the Devils in their home opener. They are coming off a 9-8-2 season in which they narrowly missed the NCAA tournament. Top returning players include juniors Cali Farquharson and McKenzie Berryhill. The Devils will play seven of their first nine games away from home, so this is a good time to catch them. ASU Soccer Stadium, 655 S. Athletes Place, Tempe, 480.727.0000, Friday, September 5, 4 p.m., $8 ASU Women’s Volleyball vs. UAB, This is the first regular season home game for the Devils, who were picked No. 4 in the Pac-12 preseason poll. The bulk of the significant contributors from last season’s 19-14 NCAA squad return, including junior outside hitter Macey Gardner and junior setter Bianca Arellano. Gardner was picked to the all-conference preseason team for the second straight year. Wells Fargo Arena, 634 E. Veterans Way, Tempe, 480.727.0000, Friday, September 5, 2 p.m., $8 Cardinals vs. Chargers, The perceived rise in the Cardinals’ stature under coach Bruce Arians is demonstrated by their appearance at home in the first week of the NFL’s Monday night slate. They should be better on offense, now that Andre Ellington is the featured running back and that quarterback Carson Palmer has a year in Arians’ system. But the defense, so strong last season, has question marks because of management’s big goof in allowing middle linebacker Karlos Dansby to get away. University of Phoenix Stadium, 1 Cardinals Drive, Glendale, 602.379.0102, Monday, September 8, 7:20 p.m., $40-$598

Student Voices Townie troubles Ana Anguiano • College Times

Archive

The first week of classes was always my favorite as an undergrad. I loved the crazy shuffle to get all my classes in order and trying Ana Anguiano to figure out transportation between campuses. I was a nerd with a planner and nothing better to do than get pumped about school. Of course it was always a little hectic and buying books always felt like it took a part of my soul, but nothing beat a good first day of class when all that was distributed was a syllabus and

class let out early. I was left free to wander and people watch as the foot traffic rivaled wheel traffic, which was a proper sport before ASU made everyone get off their bikes and walk everywhere. It was a nice, peaceful, reflective time where I was able to prepare myself for class. Now three years out of college, I see the first week of classes as a traffic hazard. I actually live closer to campus than I ever have before and it’s funny to be on the flip side of the equation. The summer was relentless and hot, but calm. The bars in Tempe were full of suspicious summer folk and the streets were empty. But now it’s as if the city has exploded and I can’t handle the amount of people darting around town all day long. The cuteness of everyone settling in and finding their way around campus slows down my commute time. I see packs of students who clearly do not know each other that well yet all interacting loudly and franticly. You can see the freedom in everyone’s eyes being lit fiercely as they start to get into their own groove for the semester. It’s far too easy for me to be cynical about students going back to school, but mostly I feel like a townie. My weird little post-college life is still very

college-centered, and while I feel very protective of that wide-eyed nerd I use to be, I don’t envy any of the students. If anything, seeing a new batch of them year after year makes me

anxious. I hope the Tempe they are seeing today is just as fun and fulfilling as it was when I first moved here in 2008. I might not have moved very far away, but it feels like I have.

STUDENT VOICES Mind the

AGE GAP ...with Old Fart and Young Punk

The monthly battle royale between two stubborn people born 60 years apart

Debate: Are Millennials the dumbest generation yet? First word: Dear Old Fart, I don’t think I’m a dumb person, but I’m certainly not a card-holding member of MENSA. Then again, most people don’t consider themselves dumb, do they? Our own egos get in the way of finding out whether we’re really dummies or not. The smart people tend to think they’re dumb while dumb people think they can conquer the world. Charles Bukowski allegedly said it best. “The problem with the world is that the intelligent people are full of doubts while the stupid ones are full of confidence” is a quote attributed Bukowski, rightly or wrongly. If he actually said it, he’s certainly dumb by his own account. The ego on that guy! I’ve certainly done some dumb things in my life. Luckily they’ve been few and far between. I once got so drunk on Halloween that I decided to “play firefighter” in the parking lot of my apartment complex. This braniac idea consisted of lighting old furniture on fire and putting it out with the only fire extinguisher in my home. I was too broke to afford a new one. Yeah, that was stupid. So I’ve been dumb, but I don’t think that makes me dumb. But the sentiment I often hear from older folks—and older farts—is that my generation is the stupidest yet. I don’t know what it was like for you growing up. Since this is our first back-andforth, I don’t know what era you considered your glory days. But I know one thing for certain—your parent’s generation thought yours was the stupidest yet, when in reality it was likely quite the opposite. In the course of human evolution, even on the micro level between your generation and mine, humans have only become smarter. Of course that depends a lot on what you consider “smart.” If you consider education to be the pinnacle of intelligence, we’re practically rocket scientists. According to a Bureau of Labor Statistics study, college enrollment among high school graduates increased from around 45 percent in 1959 to 70 percent in 2009. Of course there was a tremendous cultural

20

shift in attitudes toward college when I was younger. When I was in elementary school, it wasn’t a question of if you’ll go to college, but where you’ll go to college. Maybe that shift in attitudes can be attributed to your generation realizing that street smarts don’t always get you through. Our focus and ideas of “success” as a country shifted from unionized factory labor to white collar, computer-and-desk jobs, and therefore we needed more education. Book smarts aren’t the only barometer for intelligence by any means. People with brilliant minds for writing, math and science will always exist, but college fosters and brings that out of people—even if it’s technical college. Everyone can stand to become smarter. I think the impression your generation gets of mine is from the media. The fact is that young people have always been stupid. They’re supposed to be. There’s no way to gain wisdom without life experience, and you’ll always one-up us on that. (I was born in 1987. There’s just no way I can catch up with you there.) The way the older generation has always gotten their impression of youth has always been from the media, and now the media is more saturated than ever. We can create our own social media pages and broadcast our mistakes to the world. (Thank GOD Instagram didn’t exist when I was in middle school.) Young people are making those same old mistakes. It’s just easier to show the world what an idiot you are. But mistakes are a catalyst to learning and learning is a catalyst to becoming wise. I look forward to you telling me why I don’t know anything. Maybe I’ll learn something. —Young Punk

AUGUST 28 - SEPTEMBER 10, 2014 • ECOLLEGETIMES.COM

Last word: Dear Young Punk, I’m no dummy, either, but I’ve done my share of dumb stuff. Like the time in eighth grade when there was a ferocious rain storm and we had a “rainy day recess,” where everyone had to stay inside the school during class breaks. Standing in a crowded hallway, I got bored and threw a book at one of my classmates. He ducked, the book hit the press plate of a fire alarm box, and soon everyone cleared out of the building and onto the soggy playground and stood drenched under sheets of rain. That day I became intimately acquainted with the darker side of Principal Bradford, the wrath of the local fire department, and was on the hit list of every kid’s parents. Aging doesn’t necessarily make one immune to stupid behavior, but it does slow down the process, and through years of experience the proclivity for doing dumb things lessens and hopefully fosters a certain amount of wisdom. There has always been a generation gap. Today, I believe that gap is wider than ever because of the sweeping cultural, political and technological changes that have occurred at near light speed over the past fifty years. I was born in the midst of the Great Depression and grew up during World War II—two of the most dramatically significant periods in our nation’s history. That era imbued my generation with a deep sense of patriotism, a reverence for religious institutions, an appreciation for the concept of family, and a respect for parents, government officials, and all those we considered our elders. No, Young Punk, the previous generation did not consider mine the stupidest yet. The attitude back then was that we were a work in progress. We were encouraged to learn and to never stop learning, whether it be within the distinguished walls of the academic community or out in the less genteel classrooms of the street. Interestingly, the wisdom of my parent’s generation came largely from people who had little formal education, let alone a college degree. Still, they possessed a level

of intelligence, common sense and hard work that resulted in attaining the American dream. They inspired much of the model for my life. I also disagree with you that the older generation always gets its impression of yours from the media. I get my perception of you Millennials not from the media but from my own studious eye and ground-level acuity of the human condition. You’re a pretty bright bunch, but... You’re letting technology steal your humanity. I see it everywhere, including with my own teenage grandchildren. When they come to my home, I tell them to put away their hand-held gadgets and talk—something you Millennials don’t do much. Oh, sure, you’re texting, emailing, Facebooking and tweeting, but you’re not holding face-to-face, enriching conversations. You’re connecting more with the Internet and being foolishly indiscreet in your choice of the words and pictures you send that become forever imbedded in cyberspace in full view of millions of eyes. In other words, you’ve surrendered your privacy, which one day may come back to bite you. You’re a rational bunch, but... You’re too caught up in the cult of celebrity. You see and hear a plethora of performers on the big screen, the small screen and the stage and believe that those famous faces and voices belong to a super rich, super happy, super special class that you worship and covet. You got it all twisted, Young Punk. Take if from the Old Fart, all that glamour and glitter is not what you think it is. I know, I’ve been there with some of the biggest names in show business and have come to know many of them as human beings—people who have the same fears, frailties and burdens as you and me—only magnified many times over because of their fame. Believe me, being recognized everywhere you go morphs quickly from an ego boost to an intrusive liability. I’d like to say that essentially there’s not that much difference between your generation and mine. But I won’t, Young Punk, because it’s not so. —Old Fart

Joel Vinson talks about his personal vape on The Vape Channel.

Vape Escapes talks shop on e-cig YouTube channel Ana Anguiano • College Times There is no denying the popularity of e-cigs. It is estimated that e-cigarettes are a $1.5 billion market, and it is set to grow 24.2 percent per year through 2018, according to new projections from Research and Markets. So it is no surprise that e-cigs have a huge following by both casual vapers and hardcore hobbyists. There are whole online communities on message boards and Reddit that talk about everything from hardware modification to local legislation. Vape Escapes in Phoenix is joining the online conversation about vaping with their new YouTube channel. The Vape Channel is ideal for someone who wants to geek out about hardware, juice and vaping politics. It’s typical shop talk that you would probably hear in any vaping lounge, especially at Vape Escapes where Joel Vinson, The Vape Channel host, is a local authority on the subject. “It’s a weekly show that touches on everything from news with updates from the federal government, to how to use new equipment, to reviews on new equipment, and all sorts of stuff. And we try and a little humor and comedy to it,” Vinson says. Vinson has a background in podcasting and takes the show in areas you wouldn’t expect, such as vaping etiquette in public, which has become a hot topic recently with Tempe’s ban on e-cigs in public. But the videos are brief, entertaining

24

and informative. Vinson even takes questions from viewers and takes the time to answer them comprehensibly. He says he wants viewers to be able to get answers to questions they might be too embarrassed to ask in person. “What differentiates us from other stores is that we really go out of our way to educate. If you come in here, you’re not just going to buy an e-cigarette and walk out. When you walk out you are going to have a vape in your hand and know exactly what you are doing,” he says. The videos are ideal for novice vapers, but anyone looking into finding out more about electronic cigarettes will gain an insight into the larger vaping culture and community by listening to Vinson talk about vaping. “My videos are totally bias because it’s my opinion first and foremost, but in the future I am trying to bring in other people so we can promote discussions,” he says. Vinson says other vaping videos online are usually 20 to 30 minutes long and consist of people taking big puffs from their hardware. Hardly anything you would want to sit through. Instead, Vinson is honest in his reviews and puts his own opinions on the line. “I have the benefit of working where I work, so I get to try things most other people don’t get to try,” he says. Advice mom didn’t teach you

5 tips for mind, body and bedroom

T

hese days, being wildly busy is something we’ve come to accept and even embrace. And while there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach, here are a few natural remedies to help you find balance. Take your vitamins Nowadays, supplements go beyond the standard multivitamin and supply immune nutrients, amino acids and green super foods. There are even plant-derived sexual stimulants, like Yohimbe extract, along with other performanceenhancing herbs to help support performance and stamina available on the market today. Coconut Oil—Not just for cooking Recent studies have shown that coconut oil improves cognitive function and stalls or even reverses neurodegenerative diseases in early stages. Other benefits and uses range from weight loss, to a speedy bruise healing treatment, and even as a massage oil and natural lubricant. Make time in the bedroom Contrary to popular belief, regular sex does more than temporarily boosting one’s mood. Sex is imperative in improving and maintaining overall health. Studies have shown that sex contributes to a stronger immune system, reduced

depression and stress, pain relief, lower blood pressure, improved sleep and even a reduced heart attack risk, to name a few. Whether it’s with your partner or alone, make time to incorporate sex into an overall health regimen. Eight hours a day Adequate sleep plays an intricate part in our health and well-being. Be sure to hit the hay around the same time every night and wake up around the same time every morning. This type of regular schedule has been proven to benefit your memory, longevity, concentration, weight and stamina, among many other things. Get Physical We’ve already noted the importance of regular sex. This time we’re talking about hitting the gym, or the trail, or play on that new routine you just downloaded. Whatever your method, try to get at least 150 minutes of moderate activity, 75 minutes of vigorous activity, or a combination of the two each week. Yes, sex can count toward your weekly tally. Quinn Whissen and Ryan Tempest of This Could Be PHX.

This Could Be PHX seeks to change the way the public thinks about downtown Christina Caldwell • College Times If you were to ask a housewife out in the ‘burbs about Phoenix, you might get a boots-quaking, nose-turned-up response about downtown being dirty, unsafe and boring. Younger people know that downtown is slowly becoming the heartbeat of the Valley. Ryan Tempest, a local architect, and Quinn Whissen, a designer and entrepreneur, know that better than anyone. Together they want to spread the word to the outskirts of town that downtown is not just safe, but totally awesome as well with This Could Be PHX. College Times: How do you explain This Could Be PHX to someone who has never heard of it? Tempest and Whissen, via email: This Could Be Phoenix is a community engagement and urban awareness group working to help make downtown Phoenix awesome— awesome as in a livable, walkable, thriving and vibrant urban core. We talk with the community on social media to understand what the future of Phoenix looks like to them and create Envision Projects that actually show the possibilities of a vacant Do you think Phoenix has culture? Why or why not? Coco Panedo “Yes, I believe it does. Or at least Phoenix is trying real hard to make it active”

lot or empty building. We help people imagine the future of our city together and hope that one day our visions can actually come to life. What do you tell people who say Phoenix has no culture? You’re wrong. But we can’t blame you for thinking that. After all, downtown Phoenix didn’t used to be how it is today. A lot of the area was truly a ghost town, and most people wouldn’t be caught going downtown for anything but a sports game. But at the same time, there were tons of art, fashion, and music events going on...you just had to do a little more work to find it. Things are more visible now, but we still have work to do. What downtown Phoenix has plenty of is community. It’s a community that strives to bring a lively, organic culture to the area and make a uniquely Phoenix area that people want to come to. What kind of businesses do you think downtown is lacking? There’s one big gaping hole in downtown businesses: retail. What a livable urban core needs is places to purchase your daily needs–and some things that might not be so necessary, but sure are fun. Most of all we need a grocery store. There is no place to buy fresh food in the core other than the farmer’s markets, and all residents currently have to leave downtown to buy bananas, meat, cheese, etc. To truly make a place people want and can feasibly live, we need to bring in those things that don’t make people leave to get it elsewhere. Wine and whiskey aged beer is for adventurous drinkers Ana Anguiano • College Times You know the old saying—beer before liquor, never been sicker. Well what if we told you that was all wrong? What if beer and wine, or beer and whiskey, were actually made for each other? Turns out, they make a heck of a brew, and no, that’s not just our lush side talking. Brewing beer in wine or whiskey barrels isn’t exactly a new concept, but the delicate balance it takes to complement subtle flavors in both wine and beer is complicated, and in our experience, hit or miss. The nice thing about a barrelflavored beer is that it goes a little above and beyond in the notes. It’s also the kind of bottle you would want to bring to a party to make both the snobby beer drinkers and the snobby wine drinkers find some middle ground. The whiskey folks will probably try everything.

Epic

Elder Brett Saison-Brett Golden Ale

Arizona Wilderness Brewing Co.

Bear Wallow Berliner Weisse Sour Apple Sour Wheat ABV 3.5% If you want to try several different barrel aged beers, Arizona Wilderness Brewing Co. is the place to go. They use red wine barrels in their Old Brood Braggot, made with Superstition Meadery, an urban winery in Prescott. And their BWBW—a Sour Apple Sour Wheat made with 50 pounds of puréed apples from Gilbert’s Agritopia—comes from red wine barrels. Sour beers are usually reserved for the keenest of beer drinkers, but we say that’s a bunch of junk. The red wine barrels used to add a certain sourness to the beer without being too tart. We also dare you to try their Hellsgate Imperial Saison, which is made in tequila barrels.

Oskar Blues Ten FIDY

ABV anywhere from 8.8% to 9.3%

ABV 10.5% Don’t let the Mormon missionary on the bottle throw you off. This is a tasty, crisp brew is a collaboration ale between Epic Brewing Company in Utah and Crooked Stave Artisan Brewing of Fort Collins, Colorado. A Saison ale is already fruity and spicy on its own, but the trick is adding brett, aka brettanomyces, which is wild yeast that leads to a richer, smokier flavor. Brettanomyces is one of those fun science words that throw you for a loop, but it is a funky yeast that can be destructive in large amounts, but perfect in small doses. Epic Elder Brett Saison-Brett Golden Ale does it justice as it elevates the brew into a citrusy and slightly tart treat.

I don’t know if you currently have chest on your hair, but this beer will certainly grow you a chest garden with its whiskey barrel aged ways. Oskar Blues Brewery has made a stout that bullies other stouts. It has a hefty alcohol content, a thick sip and chocolate-covered caramel and coffee taste, which goes perfectly with the whiskey notes. Made with two-row malt, chocolate malt, roasted barley, flaked oats and hops, this beer is begging to be paired with dessert. It’s like beer, whiskey and chocolate all came together to make bad decisions in can. Luckily, we are all on board for this devious combination.

Drink recipe try-out:

Beer smoothies Christina Caldwell • College Times By now you already probably know about the agony and the ecstasy that is a daiquiri. While they taste amazing, get your sufficiently buzzed and, to some, are arguably nutritious, you can pack on the pounds if you drink a ton of them. A recent trend on the Internet brought together two awesome things—beer and smoothies—for a dessert concoction we assumed was for the gods—beer Crafting the cocktail: It’s as easy as it comes. Combine your fruit and yogurt into a blender, then add your raspberry (or other fruity beer) in place of juice. Blend it up, put it in a fancy container and get to work. The verdict: We don’t want to knock this cocktail. It’s good. It tastes like a smoothie with beer in it... go figure. But if you’re looking

AUGUST 28 - SEPTEMBER 10, 2014 • ECOLLEGETIMES.COM

smoothies. It sounded like a daiquiri with hops. We decided to treat ourselves. Of course we had to try it out, so we headed to the store to gather our supplies. We were feeling lazy, so here was our super simple shopping list: *Raspberry beer (Lindemans Framboise or similar) *Pre-packaged smoothie mix from the frozen aisle (Jamba Juice or equivalent) Yeah, you can get a bit fancier with to get your buzz on, you need to move along. In our 16 ounce smoothie, we only added one cup of fairly low-alcohol beer as not to make it become too watery. And that’s not going to do much for you in terms of intoxication. Sure, the goal of drinking isn’t always to get drunk, but if I didn’t want that to be in the case in this instance, I would have just made a regular smoothie.

your concoctions by mixing different fruits and flavors that correspond with raspberry perfectly, but we were feeling cheap and pre-packaged smoothie mixes were on sale, so we went with it. (One bit of advice: Don’t bother trying to make these smoothies healthy with greens and seeds. It’s still alcohol. Don’t be an overachiever.)

Final word: Make the smoothie. Drink the smoothie. Then drink the beer. While they taste good blended together, each still tastes better on its own. We’d recommend adding a little vodky, Jim Beam or Rumpelstiltskin to your smoothie instead. But in that case you just have a daiquiri, and now we’re back to square one.

Rusko headlines Kaleidoscope Kampout in Flagstaff

Kaleidoscope Kampout to light up Flagstaff with EDM talent Jorge Salazar • College Times We’re just a couple weeks into the semester, which means you need a break. Just because you couldn’t make it to Coachella or Electric Daisy Carnival this year doesn’t mean you can’t engage in some festival hijinks. The third annual Kaleidoscope Kampout, an electronic dance music festival, will be taking over the Pepsi Amphitheater near Flagstaff on Saturday, September 6. More than 20 electronic music bands and producers will be dropping some sick beats for those of the eco-friendly persuasion at Fort Tuthill Park in northern Arizona’s Coconino County. The festival showcases sustainable businesses, tasty organic eats, non-profithosted carnival games and more. If that’s not enough incentive, the festival will offer a custom craft beer selection. In essence, it’s a hippie raver’s dream come true. Taking the stage will be a who’s who of local and international EDM talent. Based on the number of performers, there’s sure to be something for everyone. Leeds-born DJ and producer Rusko, who is thanked for bringing dub step from the UK and has performed everywhere from EDC to Lollapalooza, will lend his talents at the event and is sure to get the crowd jumping. From this side of the Atlantic, Los Angeles-based Freestyle Fellowship will be serving some of their expertly honed word

salad. A collective of alternative rappers that’s been doing their thing since the early ‘90s, their sound is a aural collage you have to experience to believe. If chops, glitches and space-age synthesizers are more your thing, check out Paper Diamond. A master of catchy vocals and memorable melodies, you won’t want to miss his raw and electric performances. Aside from having a great time, attendees can rest easy knowing they’re also helping support Flagstaff’s community. Kaleidoscope Kampout will donate a portion of the event’s proceeds to local Flagstaff organizations as part of its continued efforts to improve the community. Partnered with Northern Arizona University in a mission to educate citizens on the importance of sustainability, the organization has become involved in community service projects and environmental volunteering. For those ready to make the trek, KKO will have a tent and RV camping area available for attendees. Camping access will be included with your ticket purchase— because nothing says “festival” like not sleeping in your own bed. With Flagstaff being the perfect getaway to escape the sweltering summer weather, Kaleidoscope Kampout will be your source for peace, love and a rocking good time. Pepsi Amphitheater at Fort Tuthill Park, 2446 Fort Tuthill, Flagstaff, thekaleidoscopekampout.com, $64

Linkin Park on their aggressive return to rock

Christina Fuoco-Karasinski · College Times Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda isn’t bothered that his band’s latest album, The Hunting Party, debuted short of No. 1 on The Billboard 200 album chart. As a matter of fact, he doesn’t see No. 3 as a slight at all, especially considering it hit the top of the charts in 67 other countries. “I feel like the Billboard chart is for one thing,” Shinoda says during a teleconference with bandmate Chester Bennington, a Gilbert resident. “It’s for the first-week album sales, and this is not really a first-week album sales kind of album. It’s a statement album. It’s a live album; an album that should be taken to the stage and that’s exactly what we’re planning to do right now.” Shinoda is referring to the Carnivores Tour with AFI and Thirty Seconds to Mars, which comes to US Airways Center on Wednesday, September 10. The Hunting Party is the first time since the band’s 2000 debut disc, Hybrid Theory, that the group did not land at the top of the charts in the first week of sales. That said, Bennington

42

adds that he is “amazed” by the collection’s critical success. “I have yet to read anything negative about the record on a critical level that has been written, which is pretty amazing, and so for that we’re very grateful,” he says. “But at the same time, almost on a daily basis, I run into Linkin Park fans and I’ll take pictures or say ‘hi,’ whatever, and every single person that I’ve met since we released this record has told me that they love the record. They are super happy that it’s out like it is, that they’ve been waiting for the great rock record.” Shinoda and Bennington describe the record as a return to rock, pushing aside Linkin Park’s electronic rock sound of its previous two studio albums. Bennington explains that his fellow musicians have said this is a record that the rock genre really needed. “They also appreciate the record that we’ve made, that it is progressive and it is something that they want to listen to,” Bennington explains. “I feel like we have accomplished our goal on this

album. I think not only creatively, but personally for the band, but also for a lot of our fans. They appreciate what we do, but they’ve kind of been waiting for us to rock out for a while, and I think they appreciate not only that we did rock out, but in the manner in which we did.” Bennington says Linkin Park just went in the studio and hoped for the best. The goal was to make great songs and, if that was accomplished, the band wouldn’t “alienate everybody.” “Luckily for us, I mean, a lot of our fans have come along for the ride on the last two records and we really did go and stretch our wings and see how far we could take these,” he says. “And I think, for us, going through that process of trying things and making sure that we’re creatively excited and energized helps us create music that still sounds like Linkin Park, regardless of what vibe the song is. I mean, that’s kind of what we’re known for anyway. So, I think for people to get hung up on us not speaking to a specific sound is kind of silly idea

anyway, considering that we’ve never really been a kind of a single genre type of band.” The follow-up album to 2012’s Living Things, The Hunting Party features the singles “Guilty All The Same” and “Until It’s Gone,” as well as guest performers Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello, Helmet’s Page Hamilton, System of a Down’s Daron Malakian and rapper Rakim. Shinoda says a lot of those special guests came about at the last minute. “It’s got to come from a very open, spontaneous kind of grassroots way,” Bennington adds. “It can’t be forced or thought of in a boardroom and written down on a piece of paper and, like, 10 to 15 people that actually see it. That’s not the way that anything creative usually gets done.” When asked if there was one song that Bennington wishes fans would listen to, it’s actually the first five, considering there’s no break in between them. “It’s always weird to kind of say what your favorite song is on the record, because when you’re in the band, you kind of have a close relationship with all the songs,” he says. “This record is a really difficult record to say that for because there’s so much range in terms of the songs.” Shinoda has a different answer. “We try and create the best thing we can create for that moment, and obviously with this album, our effort was more in an aggressive and, I feel like still, a very experimental direction,” he says. “Different people gravitate toward different songs for different reasons, and even I like different ones on different days. So, whereas, one day I love ‘Keys to the Kingdom’ because it may be one of the wildest, rapid-fire songs on the album. Another day, I like ‘Rebellion’ because it’s such a cool mix of the heaviest stuff on the record, but also it’s really melodic and a solid song underneath there. So, yeah, so just different songs.” Linkin Park w/Thirty Seconds to Mars, AFI, US Airways Center, 201 E. Jefferson Avenue, Phoenix, 800.745.3000, usairwayscenter. com, Wednesday, September 10, 6:30 p.m., $57-$98

Making friends with Hustle and Drone Ana Anguiano • College Times It’s high stakes party time when Red Bull puts on an event, but we are pumped they want to foot the bill to what will surely be a massive dance party. Hustle and Drone is hitting three Flagstaff, Phoenix and Tucson along with Classixx, Superhumanoids and The Flavr Blue for a couple Red Bull Sound Select shows. You can get in for free if you RSVP at redbullsoundselect.com, although you have to show up a little early, but Hustle and Drone’s front man, Ryan Neighbors, promises everyone a crazy, packed show. Neighbors was previously the keyboardist for Portugal. The Man when he decided to leave in 2012 to start his own band. The Portland native says the band took their time with their new material and wrote the songs over the course of a year and a half. We chatted with him about his new loosely “Smells Like Teen Spirit”-inspired video and his new album, Holyland, which will be released September 2. College Times: What was it like filming the video for “The Glow?” Neighbors: In an NBA arena? That was crazy. I’m obsessed with basketball and the NBA. I played basketball for my whole life and followed the Blazers my whole life. I was thrilled when the opportunity arose, and even more thrilled when we got it, and then even more thrilled when I got to play basketball and shoot hoops on the court where the Blazers play, during the playoffs. Shooting hoops was almost more thrilling for me than setting up my musical equipment on the court. It was actually making a shot in a place where I watched games my whole life. Pretty cool!

It is nerve-racking having someone dunk over your head? They had trampolines. I trusted them. There were some close calls. I could have got a shoe to the nose but I never did! My favorite track off the album is “Skinbread,” but is there a track that you like more than the others? My favorite track probably changed often based on how long we had them. I think overall it’s “Bhikshu.” That was the most meaningful song to me on the record and it has an energy and vibe that I’ve been chasing for quite some time that I finally captured. It’s emotional! It’s an emotional song. That’s why I like it. Is that the song that’s about a dog? That’s the song that’s about a dog, yes—a dog that didn’t have much longer to live. He was walking around a creek and I had a guitar; that’s just what the song happened to be about. I couldn’t escape it, it was right there in front of me. It was my friend’s dog. I don’t even know much about the dog but at the moment it captivated me. That must be nice for your friend having a song written about their dog. Yeah, totally. They appreciate it. Friends like that. I take requests. Any friend that has a dog, I will write a song about that dog for them. Can we be friends? Yeah. It is run by a darling couple in Sweden and all their cooking is either vegetarian or vegan with a focus on natural ingredients. Tack on plenty of dirty jokes and the occasional dog cameo and you’ve got a hit! She also wrote an entire book about breakfast tacos, which sounds like the key to world peace. Just sayin’. Devour some eye candy and food porn... Smitten Kitchen smittenkitchen.com This is one of the OG food bloggers if you’re familiar with the scene. Produced from a tiny kitchen in Manhattan, the recipes Smitten Kitchen churns out are always impressive. They have a wide spectrum of dishes and focus on drinks as well. Their design is clean and simple with lots of eye candy and home design that makes you feel extra sad and broke (...but maybe that’s just us). The food photography and styling is enticing and the recipes are great for finding dinner party inspiration. Sample recipe: Easiest Fridge Dill Pickles

Get your baking on... Sally’s Baking Addiction sallysbakingaddiction.com Nowhere else on the Internet do things like Cinnamon Sugar Sweet Potato Fries with Vanilla Icing Dip and Marshmallow-Filled S’mores Cupcakes come to life. Sally’s Baking Addiction is freaking decadent and all of the desserts are straight out of a sugary Katy Perry fantasy. You might get diabetes just scrolling through the site, but luckily there are a few healthy recipes scattered throughout that will remind

Sample recipe: Rhubarb Upside-Down Yogurt Cake

Not about the food... SORTED Food - sortedfood.com Sometimes you just want to watch people cook without actually wanting to cook yourself. Sorted Food is a group of four young British friends in London trying to get a handle on cooking while their friend Ben, an actual chef, creates the meals and educates them along the way. The boys are always looking to have fun, usually at the expense of Ben, but their interactions are usually better than the recipe. Plus, you probably won’t want to convert their measurements from grams to cups because this is AMERICA. Sample recipe: Spotted Dick

For emerging food bloggers... Pinch of Yum - pinchofyum.com If you think you’ve got what it takes to start your own food blog, Pinch of Yum is a great resource. The blog is run by Lindsay from Minnesota with help from her husband, Bjork. Her site has a clean design, mouth watering photography and each food post has nutrition facts. It’s mildly fancy comfort food with lots of ideas to motivate you. Pinch of Yum also produces a monthly traffic and income report with everything from their expenses to Google Analytics, so aspiring food bloggers can learn what it takes to blog full-time. Peeking behind the scenes is almost as interesting as the food. Sample recipe: French Toast with Pear Chutney and Mascarpone

Pinback coming back for redemption Ana Anguiano • College Times Chatting with an artist before their tour is always fun. They are getting ready, rehearsing and pumping themselves up to tour the US, which is not exactly a small country. But when Armistead Burwell Smith IV, aka Zach Smith, the bassist for Pinback picks up the phone to talk, you can tell he’s most comfortable at home. Smith was eating snacks with his 4-year-old when he reluctantly recalled the disastrous gig they played in Downtown Phoenix’s CityScape earlier this year. It was during Viva PHX, when dozens of musicians played at different venues and apparently not enough sound engineers were available. Smith recalls the show with a defeated tone. “Oh yeah, that outside show that we played down there? Our nightmare show,” he says. “It wasn’t the right scene for us, but we were in and out. [We] had some technical issues and was like, ‘Well, okay! That was that. Let’s go home.’ We also had a show in Tucson the following night… that was a little better.” But now Pinback is coming back to play their own headlining gig at Crescent Ballroom, a venue known for it’s excellent sound system. They are touring for the tenth anniversary of their third and probably most beloved album, Summer in Abaddon. “That saying time flies is pretty true,” Smith says.

The idea to bring the album on the road came from their booking agent and is something they band is not too familiar with. Having around 80 to 100 songs in their catalogue usually keeps their set list busy. Smith says he recalls the time spend writing and recording the album as a transitional period. “Rob (Crow) and I use to record in my old place. The first album we ever made, This Is A Pinback CD, was at once place of mine and then the second album we did, Blue Screen Life, we did at another place of mine. And then Summer in Abaddon… my dad’s an architect and he designed a studio for us that we were lucky enough to have. That was a big change,” he says. Smith says now more than ever, Pinback is something that is driven by passion and the desire for a new sound. But Pinback is only one of the many musical ventures both Smith and Crow have going on at any point in time. “If we didn’t have other things to use as outlets, I think we wouldn’t come back to Pinback,” Smith says with a chuckle. “We like to dabble in other things and then you come back and it kind of feels like home. Rob and I can sit at any time and just write. It works, and that’s a rare thing to find.” Pinback w/Tera Melos, Crescent Ballroom, 308 N. Second Avenue, Phoenix, crescentphx.com, September 3, 8 p.m., $18-$21

Go FIGURE

By Linda Thistle

By Linda Thistle

Place a number in the empty boxes in such a way that each row across, each column down and each small nine-box square contains all of the numbers from one to nine.

The idea of Go Figure is to arrive at the figures given at the bottom and right-hand columns of the diagram by following the arithmetic signs in the order they are given (that is, from left to right and top to bottom). Use only the numbers below the diagram to complete its blank squares and use each of the nine numbers only one.

Salome’s STARS ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Changing your mind doesn’t come easily for Lambs, who place a high value on commitment. But new facts could emerge that might persuade you to rethink your situation.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You still might want to do more investigating before taking on a new commitment. Later would not be the time to try to fill in any crucial gaps in what you need to know about it.

TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) This is a good time to put that fine Bovine’s eye for beauty to work in redecorating your home or workplace. And don’t forget to indulge yourself in some personal time as well.

SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A new opportunity should be carefully studied. It might offer some of the things you’ve been looking for. Or it could contain new possibilities you never considered. Check it out.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your sense of loyalty to someone who asks for your help is commendable. But make sure there are no information gaps that should be filled in before you move too far too quickly.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You might have to work harder this week to get people to listen to what you have to say. But if you stay with it, you could start to get your message out to many by the week’s end.

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Don’t let difficult people raise the Crab’s ire levels this week. Avoid them if you can. If not, resist telling them off, even if you think they deserve it. Things improve by week’s end.

CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Although family matters again take up a big chunk of the Goat’s time, the week also offers a chance to explore a new career move you’d been contemplating for a while.

LEO (July 23 to August 22) Your suspicions about a colleague might be on the mark. But you also could be misreading the signals you believe you’re getting. Do some discreet checking before jumping to conclusions.

AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Applying your practicality (what does it offer me?) and your creativity (how can I improve on it?) could provide sound reasons for seriously considering that new offer.

VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Take some time out from your many tasks and see if someone might be trying to reach out to you. You could be surprised to learn who it is and why you might want to reciprocate.

PISCES (February 19 to March 20) The single set will find that keeping their romantic aspirations on high gives Cupid a better target to aim at. Paired Pisces will find that this week helps ©2013 King Features Synd., Inc. reinforce their relationships.
