Cory knew something was wrong in the spring 2020 when, after getting out of the shower in the station, his left toe wouldn’t extend forward from the weight of his sock.

“I thought it was strange,” said Cory, who played football at Phoenix College under Ron Wolfley. “It happened again and again, and then all of my toes started not working properly. Federal regulations aimed at blocking robocalls appear to have had some effect over the past year, but robotexts have skyrocketed in their place, according to a recent report from the Arizona Public Interest Research Group.ThePIRG report said the number of phone companies that have installed spam-blocking technology since it was required last year by the Federal Communications Commission has quadrupled, and the number of spam robocalls appears to have fallen by 47% in that period. But robocalling overall has little changed in that time — and is actually up slightly in the U.S. and Arizona — while automated text messages nationwide jumped from 1 billion last July to 12 billion in June.

YouMail said the number of robocalls to Arizona phones went from 82.6 million last July to 84.4 million in June, with all five area codes in the state seeing slight changes.

While robocalls have more or less flattened out under the new regulations, robotexts have exploded over the past year, because the FCC rules do not specifically regulate text messages, the PIRG report said.

It’s more than just a nuisance: Those text messages can pose the same threat as the calls of harming consumers through scams. Those can include claims of fake auto warranties, medical or insurance records, package deliveries and more that attempt to steal consumers’ personal information or get them to hand over cash.

“Every day you hear of cases where people have been scammed of hundreds and thousands of dollars,” Murray said. The FCC has partnered with more than 40 state and territorial attorneys general — including Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich — to combat robocalls and robotexts. Brnovich’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but Murray welcomed the partnerships.

“By banding together, pooling their resources, they are not like each of them doing separate investigations about the same robocall operation they suspect is doing bad things,” Murray said. While the FCC has investigative power, states have more law enforcement authority.

New FCC regulations may have led to a reduction in robocalls over the past year, but Arizonans are still getting millions of such calls a day. And spam texts have skyrocketed during the same period, according to advocates, who say phone companies can do more. (Genesis Sandoval/Cronkite News)

Viehweg said his phone is “getting better at telling me whether it’s spam,” but it is still “very frustrating for us.”

‘4D vision’: Diagrams, delusions, diets and demise

Now, “My Plate” offers official federal food guidance… and has for over a decade.Meantime, everyday Americans seem to encounter new “nutritional studies” — well, everyday. That includes one from the University of Michigan that was curiously released one month after Independence Day.

Critics were unsparing in their scorn. The most common complaint dealt with style as well as substance. Americans associate success with the top… not the bottom. Accordingly, the advice of the agriculture department was to “invert the pyramid.” (Sound familiar?)

Scientists conducting the study said they calculated the direct influence of 6,000 various meals, snacks and drinks. They claim that if someone who eats beef and processed pork products would exchange just 10% of their caloric intake for plant-based food, those “enlightened eaters” could gain an extra 48 minutes of life per day. No word on who financed the study, but it sounds as if the U of M has engaged in dubious scholarship to promote its school colors: “Eat maize so you won’t turn blue!”

USDA bureaucrats recognized they had created problems with the pyramid, but like most government workers, they were slow to embrace needed changes. Finally, in 2011, the pyramid transmogrified into a “personalized plate.”

servings of two to three daily. And, at the top, what most nutritionists in the early ’90s considered the “bottom feeders” among consumables: fats, sweets and oils… with the admonition to “use sparingly.”

Rightly skeptical folks could reflexively suggest that the research is flawed, since it “compares apples to oranges,” in a manner of speaking. And “wrong eating” Egyptologists might point out that the pyramids they study were built as burial sites for the pharaohs.Thetakeaway?Enjoywhatyou like in moderation.

Actually, “official” recognition of the food pyramid did not occur until 1992. That’s when the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) introduced its own version, alternatively called the “Food Guide Pyramid” or the “Eating Right Pyramid.”

Did you enjoy a hot dog on July Fourth? An article in the Aug. 4 edition of The US Sun claims you might have cut more than a half-hour from your life span. Researchers in Ann Arbor claim that summertime staple may put nails in your coffin 36.3 minutes sooner that a non-hot dog eater.

Of course, Washington being Washington, that development was not met with widespread unanimity… but at least the disagreements about “eating right” didn’t break down along the traditional political lines of left versus right. Instead, disputes developed over the federal approach to nutritional “multilevel marketing.”

JUDGE’S OPINION — King Features Whatever the history of ancient Egypt, there’s one “pyramid” that’s not shrouded in mystery. It’sthe “food pyramid,” which attracted quite a bit of controversy following its “construction.” Baby boomers can be forgiven if they carry a vague recollection of this dietary diagram from the scratchy, sprocket threaded, 16 millimeter monochromatic motion pictures featured during their school days so long ago.

The USDA was all about inclusion at the base of the pyramid, grouping bread, cereal, rice and pasta together, suggesting six to 11 daily servings. On the next level, vegetables and fruits shared elevated status, with guidance of three to five servings of veggies and two to four helpings of fruit. The penultimate placements belonged to milk, cheese and yogurt on one side and meat, poultry, fish, dry beans, eggs and nuts on the other… with both groupings listing suggested

Adding “fat to the fire” was a failure to recognize research extolling the benefits of unsaturated fats in weight loss, as well the lowering of blood sugar and cholesterol levels. But blood pressure levels increased on the banks of the Potomac with accusations of “lactose tolerance” — allegations that the dairy lobby “milked” the benefits of the pyramid with larger visuals that made their products easier to recognize.

Be sure to exercise and get the sleep youAndneed.realize that, despite our best (or worst) efforts, we all will one day encounter the same fate as the pharaohs… without a grand pyramid to house our remains or a “food pyramid” to follow… thankfully.

Varsho’s goal is to maintain the ca maraderie among the ballplayers. Good energy can be synonymous with a winning culture.

“It’s nice to have that person. I want to do that for the younger guys. When we were in Colorado (playing), Dallas Keuchel took us younger guys out to dinner. It was a pretty cool move by him, just to show he cares.”

The Chicago native took a .250 aver age into the All-Star break, with seven home runs and 22 RBIs. Filling in at shortstop for the veteran Nick Ahmed, Perdomo has stepped up to the plate 250 times thus far in 2022.

“I remember when I was coming up, Kole Calhoun took me out for break fast every once in a while,” Varsho said about the now-former D-backs outfielder.

“Youth movement” has become synonymous with the Arizona Di Leadingamondbacks.thecharge are Daulton Var sho, 26, and Alek Thomas and Geraldo Perdomo, both 22. In 301 at-bats this season, catcher/outfielder Varsho had 12 home runs and 45 RBIs with a .233 average before the All-Star break.

A competitive balance draft pick, the D-backs selected Varsho in the second round — 68th overall — of the 2017 MLBThatdraft.year, after signing, he made his pro debut with the Hillsboro Hops of the Class A-Short Season Northwest League. He batted .311 with seven homers.Thefollowing year, he moved up to the Visalia Rawhide of the Class A-Ad vanced California League and ended the season with a .286 batting average. He was named a mid-season all-star. During his 2019 season with the Jackson Generals of the Class AA Southern League, he was named to the All-Star Futures Game. He was promoted to the big leagues on July 30, 2020, making his debut against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He wrapped his season hitting .188 with three home runs in 37 games. His .233 mark as of this year’s All-Star break, marks a 45-point improvement from his MLB debut season. The catcher/outfielder combo is cer tainly noteworthy, too. Varsho, who hails from Marshfield, Wisconsin, has played 30 games at catcher, 31 games in center field, and 26 games in right field.

“I want to make sure we’re all stick ing together and just having fun,” he said. “When I came up, there were a lot of older guys. I just feel a lot of the younger guys have proven themselves coming up here. We’re having a lot of fun and the energy is great with this team.”Theyounger faction came up togeth er. Thomas, who has been an outfield highlight reel in his rookie season, has approached home plate 212 times after being called up in May from the Reno Aces, the team’s AAA affiliate.

Clemie 86, passed away on August 23, 2022, in Goodyear, AZ. He was born on February 23, 1936, in Buckeye, AZ, to Lee Odis and Lillie Arnold, the 7th child of 11 siblings. Clemie helped his family milk cows, gather eggs, and helped his Dad in building homes, where he got the construction “bug.” He and his Dad made their own blocks by pouring concrete in forms in their own backyard. Eventually he laid blocks for the Steves Brothers in Flagstaff. Later, he went to construction/ design school, studied hard, passed the rigid written test, and when he went up to the window to pay for his contractor’s license, the female clerk took one look at him and said, “you’re too young to be a contractor!” He was 22 years old! He built his fi rst two homes in Buckeye (about 1959), moved into one himself, and sold the other for $5000! He was well known throughout the valley and built homes and commercial buildings in Buckeye, Avondale, Goodyear, Litchfield Park, Gila Bend, Paradise Valley, Prescott, Show Low, and Pinetop. He had subdivisions in Goodyear and Village Greens in Maryvale, AZ. Clemie was a good athlete and lettered all 4 years in high school, played semipro baseball as catcher for the “Buckeye Merchants,” and softball as pitcher. He was a 7 handicap at golf, and had several games of 300 in bowling. He enjoyed driving his boat and taking the high school Key Club boys skiing at Canyon and Saguaro lakes and liked skiing himself! Snow skiing at Sunrise, AZ and Park City, UT with Gerre, Les and Kevin, was another favorite sport. Clemie was an IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) pilot, and he and Gerre flew all over AZ ,CA, and UT in his Beechcraft Bonanza. He also rode horseback with the Desert Caballeros in Wickenburg manyClemieyears.issurvived by his wife of 43 years, Gerre (Rooks), daughters Terre (Joey) Catanzaro from Yuma, Tracy (Greg) Jacobson from Buckeye, stepson Les Rainey from Peoria, AZ. Seven grandchildren, 4 step-grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, 4 step great-grandchildren, brothers Kenneth (Angie), and David (Edda), and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased in death by his parents, siblings Gentry, Cletis, Hazel, Frankie, Edna, Richard, Bill (Oscar), Arlene, grandson Orrin Jacobson, step-grand-daughter Natalia Rainey, and step-son Kevin Rainey. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Church at Litchfield Park, 300 N. Littleton Elementary School District applied for and received the High-Quality Early Learning (HQEL) Grant from the Arizona Department of Education. This two-year grant provides 4-yearold pre-kindergarten students a fullday preschool program that will help prepare them to be even more successful, academically and socially, when they enter kindergarten. There is an income requirement for the families; however, almost all the families that have applied for the program have been accepted.

Littleton Director of Exceptional Services Tina Kauffmann is honored to have received the grant.

“This grant will allow more children to be able to be ready for kindergarten,” Kauffmann said.
