es, I know that as a good citizen, I’m supposed to encourage everyone to vote. And to do so without even asking who they will vote for. However, with the possible demise of our democracy and our planet at stake, that second part is becoming more challenging to accept. I have a Trumpster in my circle of friends who put these principles to the test. At the very least, I’m going to beg her to not vote if it’s for the Cheeto in Chief. I’ll call her Jane. In discussions with her, it’s become painfully apparent that she doesn’t have a working understanding of our democracy, and either was asleep during civics class or never took it at all. She has never been able to articulate any reason for her Trumpism. I so do not understand Jane’s politics, nor, apparently, does Jane. I am flummoxed by pro-Trump people in general, and specifically, I have more than just Jane on the other side of the logic chasm. I also have “Christine,” a girlfriend from high school who is also a Trumpster. I believe I do understand her politics: I consider Christine to be as dumb as a bucket of hair. She was never the swiftest boat in the marina. She was a noodlehead in high school, and there’s no discernible reason she’d have a born again smart-person epiphany now. In a vulnerable moment, Christine recently let me know that one of our fellow students had raped her. And she remembered him as Black, when in fact, he was an Italian from New Jersey. Makes you fearful about criminal lineups, right? It should. Our high school had maybe 50 students, including a good smattering of kids whose parents were Lutheran pastors and missionaries. Christine is a PK: Pastor’s kid. And an unspoken tenet of being a Norwegian American is that you never talk politics or religion, and now she’s talking both with a vengeance, on Facebook, of course. Curse you, Facebook! Christine is no longer a Lutheran but a right-wing evangelical, even though rigorous RWEs have recently been abandoning the current administration’s ship. While I often consider blocking or unfriending Christine, I keep her in my Facebook feed because it’s a useful way to check up on her nutty worldview. How can some people call themselves a Christian, yet tolerate the most inhumane treatment of other people that most of us have seen in a lifetime? I guess people can justify anything if they haven’t developed the mental muscles of logic or critical thinking skills. For added spice (and angst), I’ve got a Jewish girlfriend who is also a Trump supporter, Huh? How can she not see the parallels between this regime and pre-Hitler Germany? I think she votes

with her purse in mind, even though our economy is smashed and crashed. Trump and McConnell remind me of the classic Will Rogers quote: “This country has come to feel the same when Congress is in session as when the baby gets hold of a hammer.” Smash, bash, crash. Ouch! Anyway, back to Jane, who I do love and cling to. She’s bright. She’s empathetic. She’s warm-hearted. She claims to be prochoice, anti-racist, pro-LGBTQ rights, and pro-environment. She uses the post office. We like the same movies. She wears a mask! She believes in science for goodness’ sakes! Her blind support of Trump makes no sense whatsoever. We’ve agreed to not discuss politics, although that hasn’t stopped her from making comments on my Facebook page. Her entire circle of friends is saying to each other, “WTF, Jane?” But no one has been brave enough to talk to her about it because we love her. She has made up her mind that she’s voting for that orange guy. I promise that, before Election Day on November 3, I’ll talk to her. You can follow up with me on that. The only thing I can think of to explain Jane’s paradoxical behavior is that she had an abusive father. While she’s forgiven her late father for unspeakable acts, I wonder if she’s been single her entire adult life because of Daddy Dearest and backs the Orange Menace because of an unconscious attraction to despicable, despotic, so-called masculine qualities. (“Trust me unequivocally and I’ll protect you!”) There are plenty of studies that verify people’s unexamined attraction to childhood trauma and traumatizers. I had a boyfriend once — long gone — whose grandmother gave him forceful, unnecessary, and frequent enemas when he was a little boy, at night. And sure enough, we broke up when he asked me to put on a flannel nightgown and administer an enema. Yeah… no. Concerning Jane, I was joking around one day and said something like, “Hey, maybe I should run for president!” She said, “If you ever run for president, I’ll switch parties and vote for you!” I said, “You know you can be a Republican and vote for a Democrat, right?” Silence. To quote an old standard, I am bewitched, bothered, and bewildered, and I may have to make peace with being flummoxed while wondering if a bunch of our citizens have undiagnosed mental disorders or slept through class during the Bill of Rights. n Ellen Snortland has written Consider This… for the Pasadena Weekly for decades. SERVICE ABOVE SELF REFRESHINGLY, THE RIGHT KIND

T

his lofty ideal lies at the heart of the American experience, which measures a person’s worth by what they give back to society—not what they take. And although today’s poisonous politics rewards those with the biggest egos and greatest number of Twitter followers, service above self should always be the standard by which we judge candidates running for public office. That’s why I’m supporting Priscilla Hernandez for Pasadena Unified School Board District 6. Strength, humility, doing for others—these traits are part of Priscilla’s family, and her public career reflects them at both state and local levels of government. Her father, Daniel Hernandez, received the Silver Star for risking his life to save fallen comrades during the Vietnam War. Although he was hit in the back by enemy fire, Daniel dragged one fallen Marine comrade to safety and then took out a nest of NVA snipers who would have killed 16 more wounded Americans waiting to be evacuated. But we know him best for his civic heroics in the streets of Boyle Heights. After the 1970 Chicano Moratorium, Daniel founded the Hollenbeck Police Business Council, also known as the Hollenbeck Youth Center, which for 30 years has joined forces with local law enforcement to steer inner-city youth away from gang life through after-school activities, education and mentorship. This collaboration, known today as community policing, is considered the gold standard of public safety by many policing experts and community leaders. Priscilla has carried on the tradition of community service. In 2002, she helped pass Proposition 49, which provided extra funding for after-school programs, and served under former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger as Deputy Director, responsible for coalition building and constituent outreach. After moving to Pasadena with her husband Zachary to raise their two sons, Priscilla continued putting service above self—this time by accepting an appointment to the city’s Senior Commission. City commissioners are volunteers who do much of the grunt work of municipal governance. They dedicate many thankless hours to debating and recommending to the council those small but significant changes that keep us moving forward as a community. As such, Priscilla provided leadership as chairwoman of the Senior Commission, where she ran public meetings exploring methods of transforming Pasadena into an “age-friendly” city for seniors. Meanwhile, motivated by one of her son Zacky’s severe food allergy, Priscilla wrote and sponsored an assembly bill that requires uniform labelling of potential trigger-foods such as peanuts, milk, egg and shellfish used in school lunches and snacks. I am convinced that, if elected, Priscilla will show the same kind of care and diligence looking after all of our children in PUSD. Service over self is part of her family pedigree. And it has been a life lesson Priscilla has embraced being raised by a combat-wounded Marine. I know what it means. I was raised by a battle-tested Marine, too, although one who served in World War II in the South Pacific. In fact, I owe my life to my father’s wounds, which sent him to the hospital where he met and fell in love with my mother, a Red Cross volunteer. Together, they raised us to value hard work, loyalty and self-sacrifice. They taught us that when you dedicate yourself to service of others, you are serving the greater whole. I never forgot that. And, as her track record shows so wonderfully, neither has Priscilla, who deserves your vote for PUSD District 6. n

FACING OFF LA COUNTY DA CANDIDATES SHARE VIEWS ON ZOOM MEETING BY SARAH DONAHUE

L

A County district attorney candidates, incumbent Jackie Lacey and former San Francisco DA George Gascón, were asked what they admired about each other during a Zoom meeting hosted by All Saints Church in Pasadena. The compliments didn’t last long. Lacey challenged Gascón, who campaigns as a more progressive candidate, on the authenticity of his stances during the hour-long meeting. Both offered their views on overincarceration, the death penalty, police brutality and accountability, and defunding the police. Lacey took the DA’s office in 2012, becoming the first Black person to hold the position. She just missed the majority of votes needed to avoid a runoff in the March 3 primary earlier this year. Gascón was the first Latino to hold the district attorney’s office in San Francisco and the nation’s first police chief to become a district attorney. This discussion took place during a time of high tensions in Los Angeles, where Lacey has been under fire by Black Lives Matter and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) for not holding the police accountable for deaths against Black Angelenos as well as disproportionately enforcing the death penalty on people of color. “From 2012 to the present there have been 28 people sentenced to death row in LA county, the second-highest in our nation, and all of them have been people of color,” said Deputy Public Defender Elizabeth Lashley-Haynes in a question to the candidates. She asked if they would continue to pursue the death penalty despite the racial disparities and “obvious historic path from slavery, to lynching, to the modern-day death penalty.” In March 2019, Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom signed an executive order imposing a moratorium on the death penalty in California saying that capital punishment is unjust. The ACLU states that Lacey has continued to seek the death penalty despite this, calling Los Angeles “the nation’s leader in generating death sentences.” The death penalty is an important and passionate issue in the state, Lacey said, adding that it should be something that voters decide. “These numbers and the way the death penalty is imposed throughout the country are troubling to me personally as an African American,” Lacey said. In her response, she said she only seeks the death penalty in the “worst of the worst” cases. Lacey then mentioned the 2013 case of Gabriel Fernandez, where the 8-year-old’s mother and mother’s boyfriend severely abused and tortured the child until he died. “Those are the types of cases that we seek it and only those types of cases,” she said. Gascón answered, “I believe that the death penalty is immoral. The death penalty does not work; it doesn’t take care of crime.” Gascón said he has made it publicly known that he will not seek the death penalty and will make sure that those facing pending death penalty cases will be removed from that track. “We know that the death penalty is irreversible,” he said. “If there’s a mistake, if there’s a wrongful conviction, if someone was executed, we cannot bring them back to life.” Lacey was quick to respond, claiming that his answer is different now than it was in the past. “When he first got appointed as DA, he was in favor of the death penalty,” she said, mentioning his stance from nearly a decade ago. Gascón responded by saying he is committed to not use the death penalty. Newsom appointed Gascón to be San Francisco’s police chief in 2009 and district attorney in 2011. Gascón, while formally a Republican, has recently been endorsed by Bernie Sanders, Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren and most recently, Newsom. In a statement from Newsom in late August announcing his support for 6 PASADENA WEEKLY | 09.17.20

Gascón, he said, “[Gascón] famously reduced crime while reducing incarceration, and he burnished a national reputation as a leader in the fight to reform our dated system of justice.” Lacey holds support from The Los Angeles Police Protective League as well as The Association for Los Angeles County Sheriffs, two labor unions that represent Los Angeles law enforcement Jackie Lacey members, a topic that ushered a hot discussion among the two candidates. Some have questioned whether it’s ethical for district attorneys to accept contributions from police unions, as they make the decisions on whether police officers are held accountable in misconduct incidents. Civil rights activist Patricia Coulter grilled the candidates on this topic. She prefaced her question by stating that while Lacey has accepted contributions from police unions over the last eight years, hundreds of people have been killed by law enforcement and only one officer has been charged. Coulter didn’t let Gascón off the hook either, stating that no police were charged for shooting Black and brown people while he accepted money from police unions as district attorney in San Francisco. Gascón said he accepted a few checks from police unions in the past but added that when he ran in 2014, he didn’t accept any money and pledged not to ever again after he saw the conflict in interest. After the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis, three California district attorneys and Gascón wrote a letter to the State Bar, lobbying to prohibit district attorneys from accepting contributions from police unions, Gascón mentioned in his response. Lacey defended her acceptance of these contributions from police unions, saying it’s a “fallacy” to believe that the money influences her decisions on whether or not she prosecutes law enforcement officers in misconduct cases. “It’s about the facts of the case, it is not about accepting money,” she said. “I accept contributions from a lot of unions.” Lacey said it’s difficult to prosecute policemen because oftentimes, their actions are in-policy. “We have in fact held officers accountable but it’s the law,” she said. “If you look at the law it says you can use deadly force if you feel your life or the life of someone else is in danger if you’re a law enforcement officer.” Both were also asked how they feel about defunding the police. A July poll from UC Berkeley’s Institute of Governmental Studies found twothirds of California voters support the Black Lives Matter movement, which advocates for defunding the police as well as holding police accountable for wrongful deaths. Lacey stated that significant budget cuts to police could be harmful to public safety and that their department is already redistributing funds. She thinks rather than voting on the matter, it should be studied to find the best solution. Gascón said, “I believe that we need to reimagine the criminal justice system. I believe that we need to move away from the theories of overincarceration. We need to move away from overpolicing communities.” The election is November 3. n

risha Muse was overwhelmed with COVID-19 restrictions and worried about the effects they have on restaurants and small businesses. Equally, she has been concerned about the everyday heroes—health care workers, grocery store clerks, delivery people and postal workers. She couldn’t just sit on the sidelines. So, the 16-year Pasadena resident founded Pasadena Food Hug to embrace these folks. She purchases food from local restaurants and takes it to those in need of a nice meal. Each Friday, the organization delivers meals to essential workers on the job. “I wanted to do something to help,” Muse said. “I’m not really a religious person, but every night I would pray for the health care workers, the grocery store workers, delivery people—everybody who is keeping things going while we’re all hiding out.” Muse’s full-time job is director of community relations for SoCalGas. She organizes charitable giving and the placement of executives on nonprofit boards. Since COVID-19 hit, SoCalGas has repurposed many of its grants to nonprofits that are affected by the pandemic. For Pasadena Food Hug, Muse partners with the Latino Restaurant Association, which received a SoCalGas grant. The association’s restaurants prepare the meals for Pasadena Food Hug. The program has raised nearly $50,000 with donations from Pasadena residents and businesses. “I like being able to help the restaurants and community,” Muse said. “I take Fridays off from my normal day job and make deliveries. The restaurants are super happy and grateful for the business.” Muse has received thank-you notes from those who have received food. “I received one from a translator for a COVID testing site,” Muse said. “She said how much it meant to her and how it made her day. Last week, we made deliveries to Pasadena Water and Power workers. I said, ‘Thank you for working so hard.’ They were so appreciative. They said they just get yelled at every day. “Sanitation workers said nobody thinks of them, either. It’s been a really good feel-good effort. In the end, it’s not going to solve our COVID problems. It’s going to channel energy to help the community.” To make a donation, visit latinorestaurantassociation.org/pfh. n

he opioid epidemic seems to have reached Pasadena after the city’s police and fire departments found seven victims of overdoses. “This really is an anomaly for Pasadena,” said Lt. William Grisafe who has been with Pasadena Police Department for 25 years. “I’ve never seen this happen in my career.” Last weekend, the two departments responded to six different calls finding seven victims all within 24 hours. Two of the seven victims were found in the same residential building. According to officials, Pasadena Paramedics reported the first case when they found one victim on September 11 at 4:30 p.m. Police responded to the last case after receiving a call about a deceased male. According to officials all of the victims were 30 -to 60-year-old men, three of whom died. The other four victims are in local hospitals recovering, with one in grave condition. “We’re actively investigating these incidents,” Grisafe said. “We’re trying to determine if there’s a link. As far as prevention goes, it’s kind of difficult when people are using narcotics whether they be prescription opioids or illegal ones.” According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2018 the number of drug overdose deaths was four times higher than in 1999. Of the 67,367 deaths in 2018, nearly 70 percent involved an opioid. Whether it’s a prescription or an illicit drug, 128 Americans die from an opioid overdose every day. According to the CDC, 450,000 people have died from an opioid overdose from 1999-2018. In 2018, opioids accounted for over 2,400 deaths, about 45% of all drugrelated overdose deaths. However, California providers have one of the lowest rates of opioid prescriptions with 35.1 prescriptions per 100 persons. The national average is 51.4 prescriptions accordion the National Institute on Drug Abuse. According to Grisafe, based on evidence discovered at the scenes, police believe that the overdoses occurred with illicit opioids rather than prescribed ones. However, it may take a toxicology report to confirm. The CDC outlines the opioid epidemic into three waves spanning nearly three decades. The first wave began during the 1990s when officials saw an increase in prescribed opioids which in turn resulted in increasing overdose deaths since at least 1999. The second wave began in 2010 as officials saw a rapid increase in deaths involving heroin. While the CDC has seen decreased percentages of opioid-involved death rates overall and death rates involving prescription and heroin, synthetic opioid-involved death rates increased 10% in 2018 from 2017. The current wave began in 2013 with fentanyl rising in popularity. Originally developed to treat severe pain, typically associated with advanced cancer, fentanyl shares similarities with morphine however it is 50-100 more times more potent. Of the about 67,000 deaths related to opioids in 2018, over 31,000 have been related to synthetic opioids including fentanyl. Synthetic opioids accounted for almost half of all opioid-related deaths a dramatic increase from 2010 when it only accounted for 14.3 percent. The main life-saving medicine the police and fire department has is naloxone, commonly referred to as Narcan, after the nasal spray it comes in. Described as an “opioid antagonist,” naloxone helps combat the effects of fentanyl however it must be administered fairly soon after the overdose. It can stabilize the patients breathing and reverse the effects of opioid overdose to allow first responders to transport them to hospitals. “It is absolutely very concerning to not only the police department but fire department personnel,” Grisafe said. “This would not have been discovered to be a trend over the past couple days had it not been the collective discussions between the fire and police department. We were unaware that they had three cases themselves.” The police will investigate the cases further to determine if the deaths were related to a certain batch of narcotics from a single seller. “It is very, very concerning to have this many cases in such a short period,” Grisafe said. “We are trying to determine how this happened and we’re taking steps to find the person responsible for it.” n 09.17.20 | PASADENA WEEKLY 7

WONDERFUL WEDNESDAYS WITH ONIL CHIBAS AT DELUXE 1717 STORY BY FRIER MCCOLLISTER | PHOTO BY LUIS CHAVEZ

I

t’s an otherwise sleepy morning at 1717 Washington Street in Pasadena. Except it’s Wednesday. At Deluxe 1717—secret headquarters of Chef Onil Chibas—Wednesday is when it all happens, and things start early here. By 9 a.m., a bustling team has converged. The cheerful Mimi Montero ushers us into the small “dining room” dominated by a long single dining table, which, in turn, is commandeered by Casey Cullinane and a pile of spreadsheets, busily organizing “delivery logistics.” As we make our way to the kitchen in back, we encounter local master baker Masako Yatabe, prepping scones at one counter and executive chef Alberto Morales stewing over the stoves. There’s a pleasant sense of effortlessly cooperative collaboration. Hovering brightly over all this activity is the ever-ebullient maestro Chibas. The atmosphere is wonderful. Appropriately enough, “Wonderful Wednesdays” is Chibas’ answer to the exigencies and challenges of the pandemic lockdown. Chefs of Chibas’ caliber have devised various solutions to the take-out and delivery conundrum. From elaborate bento boxes to packaged family-style meal sets, fine dining chefs pivoted to offer a wide gamut of choices during the pandemic. Chibas’ “Wonderful Wednesdays” is one of the best. Each Wednesday, a mindfully curated and crafted four-course dinner is delivered across greater Los Angeles to each week’s subscribers. Every Wednesday menu features a starter and choice of a meat, fish or plant-based entrée, two side dishes and dessert. Delivered in the afternoon, the meals are packaged with instructions for reheating (when necessary). Why Wednesday? Give it a try. It’s the day when you hit the wall with meal planning and prep. It’s the day, when you want to answer your door and have a cheerful person hand you a couple of bags packed with deliciousness. The catch? You have to be “on the list” of those who receive the weekly menus via email. Now you know! Chibas may be the most gifted classically trained local chef in town. He’s also largely unsung, except for the legions of long-time fans already in the know. Deluxe 1717 is the latest twist in the long trajectory of his journey. Born to Black Cuban American parents in New York City, Chibas grew up in Queens until moving to South Lancaster, Massachusetts when he was 12 years old. He studied musicology while playing bassoon at Boston College. His introduction to food came while working front-of-house in Boston-area restaurants immediately following college. Innately creative, Chibas initially pursued a career in film and moved to Los Angeles in 1991, accordingly. Within months of arriving in Los Angeles, he met his husbandto-be—John Orders, a nonprofit administrator and consultant—and began a six-year stint working in animation production and marketing at Disney. In the meantime, he produced and directed a short film, which loosely presaged his engagement with food, called “Grazer.” The couple moved to Chicago for a year, when Orders served as associate director of the Museum of Contemporary Art. On return to Los Angeles, Chibas continued working in production and marketing at Sony and Dreamworks until 2004, when “I hit a wall with animation,” as he puts it. Following his gut, as it were, Chibas enrolled in the 15-month culinary program at the now-shuttered Cordon Bleu culinary academy in Pasadena, where he met longtime collaborator Alberto Morales. He soon opened Elements Kitchen as a catering operation. “I didn’t want to be a chef or have a restaurant, so of course I became a chef and had a restaurant.” A lunch café opened out of the catering business and before long, interested backers began encouraging larger ambitions. His formal restaurant—Elements—opened in the courtyard dining space across from Pasadena Playhouse in 2010. A fine-dining concept featuring imaginative and changing seasonal menus, Elements set a high local standard and was well ahead of its time. So much so, that a combination of professional and personal exigencies forced its untimely closure in 2012. Regardless, Chibas’ reliable base of catering clients continued to grow. Working out of his home kitchen until the volume of business made it untenable, he began looking for a new space. Minutes away from Chibas’ capacious, northwest Pasadena home

he shares with Orders, Deluxe 1717’s well-equipped kitchen and small dining room provided the perfect venue for prepping and staging his catering jobs, while providing fresh inspiration for some new ideas. Before long, Chibas began hosting multicourse weekend dinners at Deluxe 1717. Served family style at the long communal table, guests had to be “on the list” of Chibas’ extended family of friends, colleagues and clients. Collaboration is always a key component. Chibas is on the board of the Urban Homestead Institute (Pasadena Weekly, April 22) and the thriving local urban farm routinely supplies fresh produce for his dinners. In the last year, he began a guest chef series that began with an eight-course kaiseki-style Japanese feast engineered by Masako Yatabe. Peripatetic local genius Chef Laurent Quenioux (Pasadena Weekly April 1) maintained a beachhead at the location for several months last year as well. Hey, it’s Wednesday! What’s for dinner? This particular week, we are still in the midst of a heatwave and no re-heating is required. Let’s start with chilled melon and ginger soup with savory pancetta and grana padano parmesan scones (courtesy of Masako Yatabe). Among the three entrée choices is grilled halibut bedded on a market salad of “sweet and sour” beets, stone fruit, heirloom tomatoes and sweet peppers with Verjus dressing. No fish? Marinated hangar steak grilled rare and served cool with a Persian cucumber, fig and red onion salad might fit the bill. No meat? No problem! Semolina artisanal conchiglie pasta with piquillo pepper aioli dressed out with roasted eggplant and fennel is the pasta salad that only Chibas could concoct. Each entrée is accompanied by lemon verbena pilaf and green and purple beans with pine nuts and holy basil. Dessert? How about fruit cake cobbler with brown sugar cream, which also happens to be gluten-free, by the way. Now, you can also order cookies by Luvvie’s Delights. These chocolate chip, oatmeal and walnut confections are the work of long-time Chibas’ collaborator Marva Sutton. This week, the halibut and steak entrée dinners were priced at $45 each and the pasta salad at $38. A $7 charge is added for home delivery. Prices vary slightly from week to week depending on the menu and payment can be made via Venmo, Zelle, CashApp or check. Orders must be placed by 6 p.m. Tuesday, the day before delivery. By the way, the packaging and containers can be returned for reuse. As Chibas explains, he’s not out for individual bragging rights. Again, it’s the collaboration that counts. “I have good taste. I know how to curate,” he said. “It sparks so much more creativity.” Until his small, exquisite and exclusive dining room at Deluxe 1717 opens again, all the evidence you need is in a paper bag delivered directly to your door on Wednesday. What could be more wonderful?

It is also the largest skin cancer and Mohs surgery practice in Northern California, has completed more than 64 mergers between cosmetic surgery and dermatology practices, and expanded to 44 locations throughout California. CSI is committed to providing excellence in dermatology and has a team of over 90 providers that includes board-certified dermatologists, laser surgeons, plastic surgeons, radiation oncologists and more. Its doctors are trained in some of the most minimally invasive and advanced techniques, and it continues to offer patients the most effective, customized and comfortable treatments. Dr. Marilyn Mehlmauer, a longtime provider who has had a solo practice in Pasadena since 1991, recently retired in August. CSI expanded its team of providers serving Pasadena with the additions of Dr. Patricia Cavender and Dr. Annie Nguyen to the dermatology department. Cavender, a board-certified dermatologist with more than 30 years of experience, is practicing in CSI’s Pasadena and Arcadia locations. She received her MD from UCLA School of Medicine and completed her dermatology residency at UCLA. Cavender specializes in adult and pediatric general dermatology, including diagnosis and treatment of moles, rashes, acne, skin conditions, as well as skin cancer diagnosis and removal. Additionally, Cavender performs cosmetic treatments such as Botox and injectable fillers, and feels that, as a woman, she has a complete understanding of what her patients are looking for with different procedures. She is also an active member of the American Academy of Dermatology and the California Dermatological Society. “I’ve lived and worked practicing dermatology in the Pasadena area for over 20 years,” Cavender

said. “I take pride in treating the whole patient, from cancer to cosmetics.” Nguyen is seeing patients at the Pasadena and DTLA locations, and practices medical, surgical and cosmetic dermatology, including Botox, fillers, microneedling and lasers. She sees adult and pediatric patients and strongly believes in an individualized approach to each patient’s needs. Nguyen is particularly interested in the diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer and has done research on the subject, in addition to acne, eczema, contact dermatitis and laser treatment. She has over 20 publications in the literature and has presented her research at several national scientific meetings. A graduate of the University of California San Diego, Nguyen attended medical school at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York and graduated at the top of her class with a distinction in clinical research and was also inducted into the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) honor society. She served as chief resident during her residency in dermatology at Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles, was a recipient of the ASDS Preceptorship and the ASDP Mentorship Award. “As a SoCal native, I have loved taking care of people in my community,” Nguyen said. “The skin is the first thing people notice, and I am dedicated to the health and beauty of it. I believe every person is different, and therefore, a personalized approach is what I strive for. I am excited to be working with and serving the people of Pasadena.” Throughout COVID-19, CSI has continued to actively monitor the pandemic’s impact on patient care and office protocols. It has created and implemented a strategic plan using best available practices and innovative ideas in order to minimize the risk of exposure in their practice. “Our practice is open to see patients and we are following CDC guidelines, state regulations, and local county health orders,” said Patricia Nittel, CSI’s Regional Director, East Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties. “We are also offering teledermatology appointments through EMA and Zoom. We’re dedicated to continuing to provide essential medical and surgical dermatology services to our patients in a safe environment.” For more information, visit californiaskininstitute.com.” n 09.17.20 | PASADENA WEEKLY 9

• ARTS & CULTURE • CARVING A PATH MICHAEL DES BARRES JUST WANTS TO BE HIMSELF

S

inger Michael Des Barres doesn’t see success as a trophy or an award. The Pasadena resident considers it something very different. “What is success?” he says rhetorically. “It’s not a gold, symbolic prize. It’s not double platinum. It’s being able to love yourself enough to be loved. That’s the ultimate award.” That’s also the takeaway from the new documentary “Michael Des Barres: Who Do You Want Me to Be?” which is available on multiple on-demand platforms including Amazon Prime Video, FandangoNOW, Google Play/You Tube Rentals, Comcast, Cox, Spectrum, Cablevision, iTunes, Microsoft Store and Vudu. He’s found happiness with his third wife, Britta Hayertz, owner of LA’s Britta Morgan Pilates, and he calls his son, Nick, his confidante. “I trust him more than I trust everybody,” who was formerly married to Nick’s mother, Pamela Des Barres, reportedly one of the inspirations behind the “Almost Famous” character Penny Lane. “I trust everybody until they become untrustworthy. You can see the disguise very quickly and then you reassemble your thoughts. “We can tell each other what time it really is. I don’t have to boost his confidence and he with mine. One of the greatest spiritual functions is making amends. You call them up, send a pigeon, say, ‘Yeah, my bad. I love you.’” Loving himself came with sobriety, which came in June 1981. In the mid1980s, he co-founded Rock Against Drugs, and later did volunteer addiction counseling and worked with homeless teens. Parentless “Michael Des Barres: Who Do You Want Me to Be?” tells the entertainer’s story. He’s the son of a junkie aristocrat (Marquis Philip Des Barres) and a schizophrenic showgirl (Marquise Irene Des Barres), as he said. He was born and raised in Hove, Sussex, England, and attended a boarding school in Derbyshire. “When you’re born into a world with no parents, you tend to really be very, very conscious and aware of what’s going on around you,” Des Barres said. “There’s nobody to tell you what’s going on around you, or explain to you what’s happening. You discover the joy of people and the foibles of people and the animalistic side of human nature. And one learns quickly how to take care of yourself.” A host of eyewitnesses including Gabriel Byrne, Steve Jones (The Sex Pistols), Don Johnson, John Taylor (Duran Duran), Nigel Harrison (Blondie), Allison Anders, Ed Begley Jr., Pamela Des Barres and Steven Van Zandt all join in to corroborate Des Barres’ tale. Director J. Elvis Weinstein, a veteran television writer/producer (“MST3K,” “Freaks and Geeks”) said, “I’d never met anyone quite like Michael, he confounded my expectations. In an age of ‘toxic narcissism,’ I found instead in Michael what I would call ‘a benevolent narcissist,’ someone who rewards your attention by reflecting his attention and enthusiasm back on you.” Des Barres has carved a path through show business with record deals over the last 50 years, and an actor in more than a hundred TV and movie appearances.

His rollercoaster career began with acting in “To Sir, With Love,” with Sidney Poitier, and includes lead role in “Ghoulies” and “MacGyver.” He was signed to Led Zeppelin’s label by Jimmy Page, wrote the omnipresent hit, “Obsession,” later covered by Animotion, and performed at “Live Aid,” fronting the Power Station. He replaced the great Robert Palmer in The Power Station—which also featured Duran Duran guitarist Andy Taylor, bassist John Taylor and drummer Tony Thompson—when the “Addicted to Love” singer preferred not to tour. “I knew him 10 years before, when he was in Vinegar Joe,” Des Barres said. “I loved him. We were quite close, but he was in the Marvin Gaye world and I was in the Steve Marriott world. “It was two very different things. He was very subdued and a crooner. When I was in Chequered Past, I opened for Duran Duran and Andy said he remembered me. They watched us because they loved Jonesy (Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols). When Robert said, ‘Look, I don’t think I’m comfortable singing to 60,000 topless girls,’ he recommended me. They called me to come to New York, I met John and Tony, met Andy, who had the final say as he was the leader of that pack. Boom, boom, boom, my first gig was Live Aid.” He said he wasn’t nervous at all about taking Palmer’s place after The Power Station scored hits “Some Like It Hot” and “Get It On.” “I jumped up on stage fearless,” he said. “What else are you going to do? I had big shoes to fill, but I wasn’t going to do an impersonation of Robert Palmer. ‘Some Like It Hot’ just got hotter.” Des Barres continues to act and preach the “rock ‘n’ roll gospel” on Sirius XM on “Little Steven’s Underground Garage” to an audience of millions. “They’re my friends out there,” he says. “There are 5 million every day. I use the same vibe for them as I do to myself. It’s a wonderful educative, entertaining feeling. Whatever happened to me in those younger years paid off. “I’m lucky. I get to work here in my house. I have a studio in my house. I’ve been doing a lot of music and it’s the best music I’ve ever made—but I always think like that. The song I wrote this morning is the greatest thing I’ve ever written. I’ve been writing this book of poetry for years. I love the romantic Lord Byron, Keats and Shelley.” Des Barres has lived in Pasadena for three years, leaving “horrible” Hollywood behind. “It’s a rat race of ambition and poison, on top of which is coated in dust,” he said. “I lived there for years. When I got this wonderful gig with Stevie, I said I was going to buy a (expletive) huge house and put a studio in it and stay right there. I’ve been lucky. I said, ‘Let’s get acreage and trees and hammocks.’ I did that. “It was prescient because of what was going down, this dreadful fight that we’re having with both culture and division, the pain, the inequality, the injustice and the COVID. This is a double header—a punch to the stomach and the heart. The birth of Hollywood really was here. All the great stars all have houses out here. Life is what you learn from it. That’s been my credo and why I’m still here. I’m 72 years old. I’m Lestat’s brother. I’m a vampire with a heart in the right place.” n

‘Mind Riot’ AUTHOR MIXES MUSIC AND MENTAL HEALTH IN NEW YOUNG ADULT NOVEL BY CONNOR DZIAWURA

M

usic, writing and mental health could be considered three very different paths in life. But for Pasadena’s Ken Bagnis, they all go back to the same creative energy. Bagnis, who once fronted the fourpiece hair metal band Pretty Vacant, is a practicing psychotherapist—and, as of this summer, a published author. His young adult novel “Mind Riot” was released in July. “When I was in the band, I had this amazing outlet and I created with my friends, and we toured around the country and went on these adventures, and then it was a really easy transition to go into mental health,” the Ohio native explained, describing never having the same day twice or facing the same problems. “And then the bands went away. … The thought of starting a new band felt absolutely exhausting, and I found a career that was really rewarding,” continued Bagnis, who is now the director of treatment for the ASC Treatment Group, and a licensed marriage and family therapist. But with a longtime interest in writing and telling stories, he said he wanted to let that creativity out. “It’s just been the most rewarding artistic outlet I’ve ever,” he started, pausing and specifying, “Like even more rewarding than the band and all that. I just love writing. I love building these worlds and these characters and having them interacting and giving them their personalities, and all the interesting humor and story that comes with it. I really enjoy it. Finally, somebody agreed with me and decided to release this book.” Released by REUTS Publications, “Mind Riot” tells the story of Salem Scott, a high school student who intends to spend the summer after his junior year playing in his band. Instead, he winds up volunteering at a private mental institution, where he must face his own demons. When that results in him being kicked out of his band, he decides to form a new one with the people he’s met at his new job. Bagnis said he was “a bit lost, like the character in the book,” when he first came to the Anne Sippi Clinics. He described learning clients’ interests and using creativity while working with them—including play-

ing songs and holding music groups to bring everyone together. “It’s about making connections with people and building relationships, and then you can start to do the work,” he explained. “That was just a great way, right off the bat, for me to get to know everybody. There are so many creative people here. It just taps into that, whether it’s art or music or poetry.” That connection carried over into “Mind Riot,” which is his first published book but fifth overall. He said he wrote the other stories, including a graphic novel, for fun—though he may return to them, in the hopes of making them publishable. Having admittedly made mistakes in the process, he treats them like a learning experience. “These are all things that I might polish up,” he said. “Now that I’ve got this publisher that I’ve got a great relationship with, I might do something with all of them now.” In the meantime, Bagnis is at work on his next book, “Break,” which is previewed at the end of “Mind Riot.” Taking a different direction, he noted that “Break” is “darker but still a lot of fun.” “That one is sort of like the opposite of ‘Mind Riot,’” he said. “‘Mind Riot’ is this kid on the outside looking in to a psychiatric facility and trying to fit in. In the next book, it’s about a teenager, a 17-year-old who has his first psychotic break, and he has these two very, very clear realities and (is) trying to make sense of it all.” Having performed in rock bands since his youth in Ohio—including going on to sign with the LA independent label New Renaissance Records, recording music and touring the

Ken Bagnis, who lives in Pasadena with his wife and two kids, recently released the young adult novel “Mind Riot,” which mixes his knowledge of music and mental health. A practicing psychotherapist, Bagnis spent years as the lead vocalist of the hair metal band Pretty Vacant.

country as the vocalist of Pretty Vacant—music has long been a theme in his writing. Tying in his knowledge of mental health, however, is something new. “I didn’t feel confident enough early on to delve into the mental health, because I wanted to do it right. I wanted to do it justice,” he pondered. “My main goal, especially with ‘Mind Riot’ and the next book, is that if I could do any kind of part in destigmatizing mental illness, I think that would be amazing. It’s a very lofty goal, but if I could do my part to help with that, that would be awesome.” Upon “Mind Riot’s” release, it landed at No. 38 on Amazon’s Top 100 Teen and Young Adult Humorous Fiction list after its first week. “That blew me away. I was shocked,” Bagnis said, incredulously. “There’s been such great interest, and people that are really connecting with the characters in the story. I think a lot of it does have to do with the mental health angle. “People are struggling right now,” he continued, referring to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting stay-at-home orders. “Kids are struggling with not being able to be around their friends, with being isolated, being stuck at home. Their whole world has been turned upside down, and depression creeps in and anxiety creeps in, and I just think that mental health and mental health treatment is really on a lot more people’s radar right now. “The book really has been resonating with people, and I’m amazingly grateful for that,” he added. “It’s not painful to read. It’s fun. You’ll laugh.” For more information, visit kenbagnis.com. n 09.17.20 | PASADENA WEEKLY 11

A blues-roots supergroup comprised of Charlie Musselwhite, Alvin Youngblood Hart, Jimbo Mathus, and the ever-popular Dickinsons—i.e., Jim, Luther and Cody—sounds like a good time, and it delivers. ‘Jazz Therapy’ A

ANGEL TOWN COMBO RETURNS TO SUNDAY JAZZ BRUNCH AND DINNER AT THE BARKLEY—OUTSIDE

ngel Town Combo’s musicians are back at the Barkley in South Pasadena, for both jazz brunch and dinner on Sundays. Specifically, they’re out in the parking lot, under a canopy, distanced from masked waitstaff and diners. “We got three 10- by 20-foot canopies, and we brought tables and chairs outside and distanced them 6 feet apart, and everyone’s covered by the canopies,” explained Mark San Filippo, who anchors their jazz and blues standards from the drum throne behind Hammond B3 organist Carey Frank and tenor saxophonist Kyle O’Donnell. “We’re trying to be really careful about making people feel safe and comfortable. I bring extra masks and put them out with sanitizer, in case people want that. We’ve gotten no complaints from neighbors. So far, it’s been good.” Since forming about six years ago, Angel Town had been a house favorite at the Barkley until the coronavirus pandemic shut down nightclubs and restaurants in March. In July, the stripped-down lineup did a test run of their “social distancing with music” arrangement, and plan to continue playing there every Sunday, per San Filippo. For three Saturdays in September they will also accompany singers with whom they’ve frequently worked: Maria De La Vega (September 19) and Gretje Angell (September 26). “It’s all the people who used to come—this jazz crowd of underground regulars who used to frequent the Barkley,” he said of the small but dedicated audience turning out to support them. “One guy’s a veteran; every time he 12 PASADENA WEEKLY | 09.17.20

comes out, he says, ‘This is my jazz therapy.’ He’s a paratrooper. Another guy has MS and is in a wheelchair; he comes out every week, it gets him out of the house. … It’s like a Cheers bar—I can name the people.” Anxiety is unavoidable in this coronavirus climate, and San Filippo acknowledged feeling his share: “I don’t want anyone to get hurt or sick, and everybody has a different level of comfort with what’s happening. I don’t know how to add up the risk vs. reward factor.” Performances are live streamed via Facebook Live for anyone who doesn’t feel comfortable attending in person. “Music really builds community, in my opinion, and you can see it’s working. … I’m not trying to put business over the health of people. But I also see the healthy benefits of people coming outdoors and listening to live music and participating in live music, and people are bringing their families out too. “It feels socially acceptable,” he added, citing other jazz acts who are performing outdoors. “We hadn’t been performing live since mid-March, so I think everybody’s thankful and excited. It’s the type of thing we have to learn how to move forward with, because it [the virus] is not going away any time soon.” n Angel Town Combo performs in the Barkley Restaurant & Bar parking lot, 1400 Huntington Drive, South Pasadena, for brunch and dinner sets on Sundays, 10 a.m. to noon and 7 to 9 p.m. No cover charge; all ages welcome; everyone must wear a mask and practice social distancing. It’s tough to imagine the soul canon without Penn’s “Dark End of the Street,” “Do Right Woman,” “I’m Your Puppet” or “A Woman Left Lonely.” The songwriting legend recently tapped some trusted collaborators (including fellow Muscle Shoals/ Memphis veteran Spooner Oldham, guitarist Will McFarlane and Nashville tunesmith Gary Nicholson) for this beautifully recorded set of romantic ballads and hopeful affirmations, whose rubbery grooves, hummable melodies and hornand organ-braided arrangements invite listeners to settle in. Penn’s voice thins on high notes yet remains persuasive because of his unaffected delivery, and it’s easy to imagine other artists recording “Down on Music Row,” “Blue Motel” and the upbeat “Clean Slate.” danpenn.com

You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property.
