“We won’t forget the men and women who have sacrificed their lives protecting us,” said Angela Harrolle, CEO of the 100 Club of Arizona. “Whether they died rescuing people at the World Trade Center in New York or making Arizona a safer place to live, our message to their families is that we see them, we understand their loss and we will never forget.” Each year, thousands of people across Arizona walk, climb and run stairs in remembrance. Respectfully, Cindy Segotta-Jones Superintendent
As the proud Superintendent of the Glendale Elementary School District, I would like to thank the Legislature and Governor for the passage of the recent state budget Their work demonstrates a belief in continuing to invest in public education to improve our children’s educational outcomes and lay the foundation for a strong Arizona economy. It is my hope that our state leaders remain committed to providing financial stability for every Arizona public school. In GESD, we never lose sight of the importance of having adequate funding sources that provide additional resources for students in poverty and students with special education needs so they too may have the same opportunities to learn, thrive, and grow This is why I am sharing the importance of community leaders taking action to request that the Governor call for a special session prior to the General Election and support the passage of a fix to the AEL issue.
Cindy Segotta Jones, Superintendent @SegottaJones
My goal as a K 12 educational leader is to work with legislators and the Governor to ensure that there is continuity in the allocated revenue so that GESD and all Arizona school districts can focus on enriching academics to close the achievement gap. The majority of Arizona’s students are enrolled in a traditional public school setting and our elected leaders are in a position to provide financial stability for our public schools. Addressing the AEL will help public education continue to support strong economic growth in Arizona and use the state budget to address key educational challenges to improve student achievement. In closing, please join me in supporting a call for a special session prior to the General Election to address the AEL. For information on how to contact our state elected officials, visit www.usa.gov/elected officials.

Last year ’ s estimated impact would have required a reduction of approximately 16% to operating funds for GESD (roughly $11.8 million). If a long term reset of the AEL to FY 2023 spending levels is not addressed, it would result in a significant financial impact even greater than in previous years. Knowing this, I would request a long-term solution to the AEL or at a minimum, a one-year fix through a special session

4 e Glendale StarNEWS September 8, 2022 said Michele A. Meyer, director of marketing and communications for ABT. “It’s fun and brings more people together.“Those that love ‘Monty Python’s Spamalot’ and that kind of humor and banter will appreciate this type of event, and those that love musical theater and have been supporters of Arizona Broadway Theater for years will understand it and love it, too. I think everybody’s going to have a good time.”The concept for “Spam-a-palooza” was inspired by the 1975 British satire film “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” as the theater is opening its production of the musical “Monty Python’s Spamalot” in October. ABT hosted its annual Broadway Ball for eight years before the interruption of the pandemic. After a successful event in 2021 based on its production of “Chicago,” the theater’s team decided to take a similar approach and throw a ball showcasing its upcoming productions while being more immersive and financially friendly for guests.

Photos of first responders lost in the attacks will line the pathway through the stairs. Standing behind first responders The 100 Club of Arizona, which benefits from the annual stair climb, is dedicated to helping Arizona’s first responders and their families.
“We help families after a tragedy,” Harrolle said. “But our hope is that families never need us because their first responder comes home safe every night. So, we also work closely with donors and agency partners to prevent as many tragedies as possible through lifesaving equipment.”
Preventing tragedies
The organization is best known for providing financial assistance to the families of first responders killed or injured in the line of duty. The commitment of the 100 Club goes far beyond a one-time payment to families, however. The mission of the organization is to provide long-term support through annual retreats for surviving spouses and summer camps for children who have lost a parent in the line of duty.
The apps provide comprehensive information and resources to help users with their mental health, physical goals, relationships and long-term financial stability. The apps were subsidized by a grant from the Bob and Renee Parsons Foundation.
Survivors have access to a committee of experts who, at the survivor’s request, provide advice and counsel without cost or obligation. This includes CPAs, attorneys, trust officers, brokers, financial consultants, insurance agents and employee benefit consultants.
To learn more about the 100 Club, how you can support its mission or to register to participate in the Tower Challenge, visit 100Club.org.
The organization also assists with tuition expenses for preschool through college-age children and works to ensure the dependents of deceased first responders, including surviving spouses, can pursue higher education without any additional financial stress.

In addition to helping survivors, the 100 Club is invested in protecting more than 27,000 first responders currently serving Arizona residents.

“When a kid is having a really bad day, they’re going to be able to have a teddy bear that will either help the first responder, help them diagnose, break the ice, all that sort of stuff. 8 The Glendale StarNEWS September 8, 2022 Both sides find something wanting in Biden’s student-debt relief plan
“An entire generation is now saddled with unsustainable debt in exchange for an attempt, at least, at a college de gree,” Biden said as he announced the plan.InArizona, about 887,100 people, or 12.4% of state residents, have student debt, according to data from the Edu cation Data Initiative, which said the average student loan debt in the state is Cesar$35,396.Aguilar, executive director of the Arizona Students’ Association, said a good chunk of his salary went toward student loan payments after he gradu ated from Northern Arizona University in “I2016.was making around $30,000 a year right out of college,” he said. “And 10% of, you know, my monthly bill was, it was a lot for the little that I was making at the time.”
Even though the Biden plan is not as much as his organization had hoped for, Aguilar said it will make “a huge difference for a lot of those individu als” who are in the same situation now that he was in right after school.TheWhite House plan would forgive up to $10,000 in student loans issued by the Department of Education, for people making up to $125,000, or $250,000 for households. Recipients of Pell Grants, which go toward low er-income students, could see up to $20,000 of their loansThecanceled.planlowers limits on how much of a borrow er’s income goes to debt payments. Currently, debt holders do not have to pay more than 10% of their disposable income per month on their loans. That would be lowered to 5%, and debt could be canceled after 10 years, instead of the current 20, for those who brought their debt under $12,000.
“Americans who have already paid off their student debt, did not take on student loan debt in the first place, or decided not to attend college should not be forced to foot this expensive bill for the 13% of Americans who did de cide to take on student loans and make up to $125,000 per year,” she said.
Andrew Lautz, director of feder al policy for the National Taxpayers Union Foundation, said the proposal will reduce federal income by erasing some student debt, but that it does not include new taxes to offset those cuts.
“We believe that there are really go ing to be three primary ways that the government makes up for that gap: ei ther decrease spending, increase taxes or increase debt and borrowing,” Lautz said. “And the third path there, increase debt and borrowing, it’s the most likely one, but that also would require either more reduced government spending or increased taxes down the road.” Aguilar said it will be money well spent, which is why organizations like his are pushing for full debt relief. “The reason why we were asking for that is because we want the United States to prioritize education,” he said. “We know that the investment return on education is enormous. You trans form communities, you transform fam ilies, you send people — low-income individuals — into the middle class.”
Students walk across the Arizona State University cam pus in Tempe on Aug. 24, the day the Biden administra tion announced a plan to forgive up to $10,000 in stu dent loan debt for people making up to $75,000 — a plan that conservatives say goes too far and progressives say does not go far enough. (Sophie Oppfelt/Cronkite News)
To those who argue that the govern ment should not be spending the mon ey, he pointed to tax breaks for “corpo rations and … rich individuals. But we never see money coming back to actual working and middle-class folks.”
The Biden administration estimates that as many as 43 million Americans — holding about $1.6 trillion in cu mulative student debt — could benefit from the debt-relief plan.
On the other hand, conservatives said the plan goes too far. Rep. Debbie Les ko, R-Peoria, called it “pure insanity.”
Finally, a payment holiday that was set to expire Aug. 31 was extended by Biden until Dec. 31. It was the fifth such exten sion by his adminis tration, and Biden in sisted that it would be theThelast.Education De partment said it ex pects to have applica tions for debt relief available online by earlyBidenOctober.said the plan would “build wealth” by letting debt holders buy homes, start businesses and invest for retirement with money that would oth erwise go to loan payments. The White House stressed the income limits were designed to steer relief to lower- and middle-class workers, claiming that al most 90% of debt cancellation would go toward those making less than $75,000.ButaPenn Wharton School of Busi ness analysis of the plan estimated that beneficiaries would be a little better off, with about 75% of the benefit go ing to people making up to $88,000. It said the plan will cost about $605 billion as currently structured, but the price tag could exceed $1 trillion if there are changes to the income-driven repayment rules or other factors.
Rep. Raul Grijalva, D-Tucson, said the plan shows Biden’s “commitment to the working class, people of color and struggling families who have been straddled with crippling debt by an un fair and inequitable higher education system.” But he also said the president needs to do more. “Many working-class and people of color took out tens of thousands in loans for their opportunity to attain the American dream,” Grijalva said in a statement after the announcement. “We should not penalize them, hold them back and further widen the wealth gap because of their success.”

There are nearly 900,000 Arizonans who could benefit from the Biden ad ministration’s plan for student debt for giveness — and almost as many opin ions about whether or not the plan is worthwhile.Themain aspect of the plan un veiled recently by President Joe Biden is a proposal to cancel up to $10,000 in debt for people making less than $125,000, and up to $20,000 in debt for low-income Pell Grant recipients. It aims to fulfill a Biden campaign promise, but does not go far enough for some progressives, who were treating the announcement as a welcome first step toward broader relief.

It wasn’t exactly “small potatoes.” That was just part of it. It was small potatoes, diseased potatoes and, in some areas, no potatoes — all combined in the Great Irish Potato Famine, which was the scourge of the Emerald Isle from the mid to lateAlso1840s.known as the Great Hunger, close to a million Irishmen died, and over a million fled the country. In fact, in the 10 years from 1845 to 1855, more than 2 million people left Ireland. Many of them emigrated to the United States — including the ancestors of the current occupant of the White House. Undoubtedly, Joe Biden has the gift of blarney; he also has the curse of advancing age and retreating cognition. Whatever his intellectual challenges, a half-century on Washington’s political stage has endowed him with a reflexive muscle memory. That comes in handy when he slings rhetorical mud — and worse — at his opponents, but also in his single-minded quest for greater power.
The story concerns his being shot in Vietnam. He was 19 years old, 9,000 miles from home with his guts exposed, courtesy of three enemy bullets.
One of my dear friends, a mentor throughout my adult life, shocked me a few days ago with a confession.
Once, that tale was a pillar of his storytelling arsenal, a testament to his ability to survive whatever life threw at him.
An example: Not a day goes by that I don’t think about my father, who died in March last year in a strange hospice bed. I was 2,000 miles away when he passed, not there to hold his hand, not there to tell him one more time that I loved him. His mind was gone by then, and his body, too, addled by dementia, wracked with Parkinson’s disease. Did I do enough for him? Did he understand in those final moments how much I cared, how proud I was to be hisTheseson? questions still gnaw at me 18 months later, weighing me down like heavy stones. This is the way I have come to define myself — as a bad son, selfish, broken in some profound way. My friend’s life was shaped by his great grandma, who, in the days before her death, exhorted him to get over her
On this page, I offer some opinions, a few tales, but not much at all about the kind of man I am. Which, frankly, suits me fine. Because the truth is, I have shamed myself many times in my life, because I have failed to do right in moments that were difficult.

America’s border takedown is more than ‘small potatoes’ SEE HAYWORTH PAGE 12 SEE LEIBOWITZ PAGE 12
One area where Joe and the rest of the Biden Bunch remain resolute can be found on our southern border… at least what’s left of it. The erasure of our national boundary, the erosion of our national sovereignty and the eventual extinction of our nation itself appear within the grasp of this administration.Ironically, one sign of Ol’ Joe’s perverse “progress” invokes the image of his ancestral home. The Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) points out that during the first 18 months of Biden’s time in the White House, over 4.9 million illegal aliens have entered our country. That’s equivalent to the current population of Ireland! There’s only one word for it: invasion. That’s what National Public Radio — yes, you read that right, NPR — discovered in a recent poll. Much to its collective editorial and administrative chagrin, the leftist radio “service” financed in part with the tax dollars of “nonlisteners like you,” found that a clear majority of 54% of Americans believe the border crisis is, in fact, anTrueinvasion.toits “open-borders ideology,” NPR sought to minimize the impact of the findings and disparage the use of the term, claiming that “immigrant advocates say the word has a long history in white nationalist circles.” Then, for good measure, NPR allowed those same so-called “immigrant advocates” to demonize the legitimate concerns of American citizens, warning “that such extreme rhetoric could provoke more violence against immigrants.” Setting aside the routine “assault by euphemism” on the English language, describing the law-breaking border crossers by the legal term “immigrants,” it’s fair to question NPR’s insistence on framing this through the dubious premise that using the word “invasion” will somehow inspire violence against illegals. What of the violence committed by illegals against law-abiding Americans? Is that underreported or, worse, routinely omitted from NPR’s coverage? What cannot be omitted from the results of the NPR/Ipsos poll, conducted in late July with a sample of 1,116 adults, is the fact that 40% of self-identified Democrats — a sizable amount — agree with the 76% of Republican respondents about the border situation being best described as an “invasion.” And independents, long regarded as

In his 70s now, he is among the wisest humans I know, an oracle of smart advice people pay vast sums to hear. The subject of one of his books arose — a self-help title that is on my bookshelf in a place of honor — and his face grew sullen.
Now, almost 60 years later, he had a different perspective: He was no longer that person, and had not been for decades — almost since the moment he was shot. Rather than set down that story for the world to chew over, he wished instead that he had made peace with the moment and moved on, as he has made peace with every tribulation everHissince.message to us was simple, but supremely wise — which is why I am passing it along to you. “We need to let go of what’s bothering us and move on,” I wrote in my notebook.“Willyou let challenges steal all the joy from you? Or will you let go, get over it and move on?”

Chances are good, dear reader, that you and I will never cross paths in the world. You know me only from my columns, which I assure you is a distorted view of who I am.
These failures are things I have carried with me no less tangibly than my wallet and car keys — and they’re much harder to lose.
“I wish I had never written it,” he told us. “I wish I had never told that story.”
No matter how hard it is, you have to learn how to let go

As our nation approaches the November midterms, one clear reality emerges. You need not live in a border state to find that Joe Biden’s approach to illegal immigration borders on insanity. Illegal immigrants from 200 countries from Mauritania to Mexico, Ethiopia to Ireland are pouring into America. And given the current situation, no thinking American would describe border issues as “small potatoes.”

BY JUDY BLUHM Glendale Star Columnist Never give up. Because just when you think the game is over, that all is lost and things will never be the same — a small miracle might occur. And it gives us hope. For years I have been writing about my New River friend, Diane Wilson, and her visiting tarantula, Manuel. For over 25 years this hairy beast of the desert would migrate to Diane’s house, usually in July, make himself at home and stay for about three or four months. Except for this year. We were worried. Did something terrible happen to our friendly spider? Manuel, where are you? Well, the mystery has been solved. He’s back! Yes, the big, old spidey was found sitting on top of Diane’s washing machine, enjoying an afternoon nap. Had he come into the house months earlier and just stayed hidden? One year, we must remember, Manuel decided to crawl inside Diane’s big, Velcro hair curlers. Sleeping like a baby, imagine Diane’s shock when she goes to put one in her hair and finds a tarantula curled up inside! Perhaps a scream, but Manuel just walked indignantly away to find another “secret spot.” And so it goes. When you let a spider rule of the house, tiptoe carefully and be prepared. Of course, nature is puzzling. Manuel should be getting ready to leave, not just arriving. Oh, dear, if only he could talk… there would certainly be a story to Itell.did have my own tarantula experience. Down in my barn, in the corner of a stall was a big, beautiful tarantula just sitting on the ground. Since my 1,200-pound mare was close by, I thought I better relocate the furry arachnid to a safer place. How would I do this? I got a lightweight shovel and gently placed it under spidey till he walked on. I took him out of the stall and he stared at me with big, black eyes and did not look happy. He didn’t look so friendly like our Manuel. Where would I put a big tarantula to be safely out of the reach of horses? Into the barn breezeway we go! Oh, yeah, like the spider was on an amusement park ride, I carried him around until he was carefully placed in the safety of the breezeway. He glared at me and then sauntered off the shovel and walked up the barn door, over the door, down into the stall and onto the ground in the exact same spot where he was before! In other words, do not mess with a tarantula! Or any forces of nature for that matter. Sometimes when we think we are helping, we are not. Other times when we think an ending has occurred, we were wrong. And just when we think we have it all figured out, we find out we haven’t. Life is a learning experience. Manuel, welcome back home!

According to the Mayo Clinic, nearly all of the body’s major systems depend on water to function and survive, and losing even a fraction of the body’s water stores can negatively affect the body and mind. Just a few of the important benefits of staying hydrated include improved brain function, weight loss, increased energy, decreased joint pain, better temperature regulation, kidney stone prevention and a healthier heart. Mayo Clinic recommends a daily minimum of 15.5 cups of water a day for men and 11.5 cups a day forOfwomen.course, one of the easiest ways for the body to lose water is through sweat, which is why it’s critical for Arizonans to continually be mindful about“Wehydration.losesomany vitamins and minerals through sweat or dehydration … and it’s just too hard to replace it orally,” Boyle said. “So, this is such a game changer.”
All IV blends have a base of lactated ringers, which is used to replace water and electrolyte loss; zinc, which helps with immune support; magnesium, which helps the muscular and nervous systems; and B-complex, which boosts energy.

“A lot of people see the names of the nutrients and vitamins that we offer and know that they’re good for them, but they don’t really know what they do,” Boyle said. “Once we’ve chatted about what their primary complaint is, then I can kind of recommend products based on that.” With some of the IV blends, patients can choose to add vitamins, supplements or medications. For instance, iDrip has an Emergency Migraine and Headache Blend ($259) that adds in toradol, an anti-inflammatory, and zofran, an anti-nausea medication. iDrip even offers anti-aging and weight management IV blends. According to Boyle, the most popular IV blend is the Myer’s Cocktail ($199), which contains a high dose of vitamin C, glutathione, magnesium and B vitamins. She said this IV blend is a great option for cold/flu, fatigue, boosting energy or hydration.Somemay think the same benefits can be obtained by just taking some supplements, but Boyle said when taken orally, the liver fields about 90% of that dosage. The only exception to this is the Pure Hydration Mix ($125), which, as the name suggests, is just a liter of lactated ringers for those who need fluids.
The process starts with someone filling out an intake form online, answering basic questions about the patient’s needs, medical history and allergies. Boyle said any time someone fills out a form, she is notified immediately. She will then call the patient to do a quick medical assessment over the phone. As long as the patient fits some basic parameters set by the iDrip medical director (such as not having heart failure, respiratory failure or liver conditions), then she can proceed with treatment.

“It’s on your time and at your comfort level. It’s one on one, so you’re going to have undivided attention,” Boyle said. “The nurse can sit there and chat with you and kind of educate you about what nutrients might help you if you weren’t aware. It’s just nice to have that kind of service from the convenience standpoint and education wise.”
Anyone who has ever been to the doctor and diagnosed with some kind of ailment — cold, flu, COVID, infection — has undoubtedly been told to make sure they drink lots of fluids. Water isn’t some kind of universal cure, but its benefits go far beyond what most people realize, according to Taylor Boyle, owner of an iDrip Therapy franchise in Peoria.

“I’ve been in the ER as both a nurse and a patient, and it’s not a pleasant experience,” Boyle said. “You’re already stressed out and not feeling well, and then you go to the ER that is overloaded with other patients and you’re not going to get attention from your nurse. … The ER isn’t going to go the naturopathic route with vitamins and minerals; they’re going to go with Regardlesspharmaceuticals.”ofthereason for getting an IV, Boyle said one of the best things about it is that people start to feel better almost immediately. And, it’s a quick and simple process that is purposely designed to take as much stress off the patient as possible. Once the initial intake form is filled out and further information is gathered, the patient just has to pick a time, date and location and Boyle or another iDrip certified nurse will be there to take care of them. “We can almost always cover a sameday appointment request or short notice request. We always have nurses available, it’s a very on-call job,” Boyle said. “We go to their home, their office, their gym, hotel — the location is up to the patient. The service itself takes about 25 to 35 minutes total.” Based in Peoria, she covers all of Phoenix, Anthem, Scottsdale, Cave Creek, Glendale and Surprise. Boyle said her typical patients are anywhere from their early 30s to early 60s but are usually people who are more wellness inclined. During an annual meeting of its delegates in June, the American Medical Association declared climate change a public health crisis and said it would push for more policies to help limit global warming to no more than 1.5 degrees Celsius, the ceiling included in the Paris climate accord.Theorganization highlighted the health risks of producing fossil fuel-derived hydrogen and said it will develop plans to help physicians adopt environmentally sustainable programs in their practices.
“We’ve certainly seen significant trends in temperature here in Arizona, especially nighttime temperatures, as a consequence of urbanization and global scale climate change,” said David Hondula, director of the city’s Office of Heat Response & Mitigation. “Those increases, particularly in our summer months, can have adverse impacts on public health.”
Last year, Darira’s group presented its flashcard initiative at the U.N. Climate Change Conference in Glasgow, Scotland, with the hope of influencing politicians, policymakers and educators to do more.“The atmosphere is warming at a very alarming rate, and the world leaders are not taking urgent enough action,” Darira said.
From heat deaths to worsening allergies, climate change harms health
The authors note that vulnerable populations are those most at risk: children, older people, individuals of color, the poor and those with underlying health problems. Black people are 40% to 59% more likely to live in high-impact areas — those that experience the most brutal effects of climate change first. Indigenous communities face a unique struggle with climate change. Living in tribal and rural areas along the coast leaves them vulnerable to the heat, and many rely on the environment for food and cultural practices.InArizona, the White Mountain Apache Tribe and other tribal communities are facing water shortages, with heat and drought only exacerbating the problem.“As we look into a warmer future,” Hondula said, “we need to be mindful of our currently constrained water resources.”Concerns about the impact of the climate crisis on health are driving doctors, nurses, medical students and others to become advocates for change.
Efforts in the works to address the problem include increasing tree and canopy shade by 25%; continuation of the city’s Cool Pavement Program, a project that applies an asphalt seal coating to combat the urban heat island effect; and a new heat shelter in Phoenix that can provide relief for up to 200 people experiencing“Almosthomelessness.everyone that comes in our doors initially has some level of heat-related illness, whether it be dehydration or extreme sunburn or signs of heatstroke,” said Jennifer Morgan, program director of the new shelter. “The need for a program like this one has existed, but the urgency was created by the heat.”
“Our patients are already facing adverse health effects associated with climate change, from heat-related injuries, vector-borne diseases and air pollution from wildfires to worsening seasonal allergies and storm-related illness and injuries,” AMA board member Ilse Levin said in a “Takingstatement.actionnow won’t reverse all of the harm done, but it will help prevent further damage to our planet and our patients’ health and well-being.”
The Medical Society Consortium on Climate and Health, which amplifies the voices of doctors in the U.S. while encouraging climate solutions, developed a three-prong approach to the issue. The plan is to stop investing in energy produced by fossil fuels, invest in and support renewable energy, and make the transition fair to everyone.
“Now is the time to ‘go big’ to meet the needs of the moment,” the group said in a 2022 report on climate and health. “We can and must raise our voices to influence the decisions that will affect health now and for generations to come.”
This new heat shelter in Central Phoenix can provide relief for up to 200 people experiencing homelessness. (Troy Hill/Submitted)
From 2030 to 2050, according to the World Health Organization, 250,000 additional deaths are expected each year worldwide because of climate-driven health problems, including malnutrition, malaria and heat.
In Arizona, health conditions related to rising temperatures are a primary concern. Even before the official start of summer this year, Phoenix hit a high of 114 degrees. As of July 23, Maricopa County had seen 38 confirmed heat-associated deaths for the year, more than the 26 recorded over the same time period in 2021. Over all of last year, the county recorded 339 heat-associated deaths, the highest on record.
An editorial in the New England Journal of Medicine, written by leaders of medical journals worldwide, cites a host of other issues: “dermatological malignancies, tropical infections, adverse mental health outcomes, pregnancy complications, allergies and cardiovascular and pulmonary morbidity and mortality.”
BY ALEXANDRA CONFORTI Cronkite News As a climate change activist and mental health advocate, Arizona State University graduate Saiarchana Darira studies the effects of global warming not just on the environment but on the well-being of people worldwide.Therecent graduate and self-described “environ(mental) health researcher” works as the youth engagement lead at Turn It Around!, a project enlisting young people across the globe to help educate adults about the dangers of climate change.Toddlers, teens and young adults from Canada to India have designed flashcards with artwork on one side and short essays or comments about the effects of climate change on the other. The goal is to challenge people to “think, see and act in new ways.”“Climate injustice is a very complex and widespread issue, and how it affects mental health is overlooked,” Darira said, pointing to Arizona’s often record-breaking, blazing temperatures as one example.“The lack of being able to go outside due to the heat, the increase in feelings of isolation, ecological grief — they all play a role in mental health.”
Decades of rising temperatures prompted Phoenix to allocate almost $3 million to heat readiness in its 2021-22 budget, to launch an Office of Heat Response & Mitigation last fall, and to develop a heat response plan.
Heat affects the body in many ways: dehydration, heat stroke, exhaustion and anxiety, while also compromising preexisting heart and lung conditions.

The 2021 NFL season was chockfull of excitement. The 102nd season of the National Football League was the first to feature a 17-game schedule. It also saw Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers win his third MVP and second in as many years, the Joe Burrow-led Cincinnati Bengals make an improbable run to the Super Bowl, and the Los Angeles Rams win its first Super Bowl since the 1999-2000 season. Despite having to follow all of that up, the 2022 season, however, is certainly looking like it will hold its own, as it is filled with eye-grabbing headlines.Tom Brady retired, then unretired this offseason, and is back for another Super Bowl run with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This season could be the last one for the five-time Super Bowl champion and three-time MVP. Many stars were traded this offseason and will certainly impact their new teams. Among them were Russell Wilson from the Seattle Seahawks to the Denver Broncos, Deshaun Watson from the Houston Texans to the Cleveland Browns (though he won’t play the first 11 games of the season), Davante Adams from the Packers to the Las Vegas Raiders, and Tyreek Hill from the Kansas City Chiefs to the Miami Dolphins. And, for the first time in recent memory, there isn’t a clear-cut Super Bowl favorite. A third of the league, give or take, has at least an outsider’s shot to win Super Bowl LVII — which will be played at State Farm Stadium in AllGlendale.ofthat to be said, numerous spots around the Valley are ready to host fans of America’s Game to watch the season play out. Depending on who you root for, pay these bars a visit on Sundays to root for your favorite team with like-minded fans.

In a few weeks, I’m meeting with and networking with three top-tier Swiss leaders in Geneva, Switzerland. Two are from a business background, and the other is a church leader with thousands of churches worldwide. The leaders don’t know each other yet. So, I’ve chosen 16 of Paul’s questions for each leader. Each leader will pick eight questions to talk about to the other leaders. This way, they will know one another, not just about one another. Thank you, Paul.

Today, most conversations with people are shallow. But not with a learner like Paul. We quickly moved from an acquaintance friendship to a casual, perhaps even close, relationship. He wanted to know all about me. He wanted to know who I am and what I do well enough so that some of me could rub off on him. He accessed the gift. Here’s some sage advice from author Stan Tobler in his book “Minute Motivators for Leaders today.” “Leaders and learners ask for direction. Good leaders don’t try to be experts in every area. Leaders know what they don’t know. They know they have skills but also know they are within a question’s reach of even broader skills. People who don’t ask for counsel make unnecessary mistakes. On the other hand, good leaders are not bashful about asking for advice. There’s no shame in being ignorant, but it’s a crime to be negligent.”I’vebeen a pastor since 1979. Yet no one has ever asked me “deep-diving” questions like Paul. Not one of Paul’s questions was about him looking for an opportunity to speak about himself to me. Instead, he wanted to listen and learn, not have a preaching contest with me.
If you are wondering why I listed all of Paul’s questions, it’s so you readers can use some of these questions to ask others and get to know others who could be a resource with insight for you. After all, the wisest leaders are those with the wisest advisers.

Every once in a while, you meet someone special. Such was the case a few months ago when I received an email from a reader of The Foothills Focus. His name is Paul Fredericks, the pastor of Heritage Bible Church in Phoenix. He explained how much he and his wife enjoyed my weekly articles. They wait each week for their newspaper to arrive so they can read the article. He wanted to set up a time with me to meet for coffee. We met, and I think I gained more from the meeting than he did. I want to share with you what made our meeting so special and transforming. I hope that what I learned from this casual meeting will elevate you as it did me. Paul and I had never met before, so we both entered unchartered territory. But the moment I met Paul, I liked him. He walked to me with a determined gait. “Are you Ed Delph?” I was right at home. I liked his vibe. I knew this encounter was going to be good. Let’s pause for a moment. Observe the first minute of our meeting through the lens of leadership and partnership. Leaders create an atmosphere. Leaders don’t depend on the weather. They bring sunshine with them. Truly influential leaders can make their presence felt in any situation. Leaders understand that magnetism is one part inherited and two parts developed. Magnetic personalities create a positive energy flow. After some small conversation and a cup of coffee (with me, nothing happens without coffee), Paul, with his eyes twinkling, held a list of questions he had prepared for our meeting. Paul was motivated and ready to listen. So, off we journeyed into a list of 20 questions he wrote for me. Later, Paul remarked that we only made it through the first question. So, here’s a complete list of his questions. “What is your background, and how has it influenced you in your career, writing today? What is your faith journey? What is that one book that has influenced you the most (besides the Bible)? Why did you start writing your column and 10 books? What advice would you give someone thinking about writing articles and books? “Who are your mentors, and why? What are the most influential lessons your mentors taught you? How did you incorporate those into your life and your writing? How do you articulate and pass those lessons on to others? What is something you look back on and wish someone would have told you during your career? Describe a time when fear paralyzed you in your career — how did you overcome it? “What leadership qualities are you trying to improve? What has been the most challenging? How do you remain inspired when inspiring others? What are your daily disciplines to keep yourself and your writing on track? Are there specific questions you ask others that have helped you? What has been your greatest challenge? How did you work through that? What do you do during your personal time that enables you to become a better writer, pastor, husband, etc.? What books or resources would you recommend? “What questions should I have asked that I have not? What can I do for you?” (I love this last question).
