MPS opens board meetings to public comments

By Tracy House After a resident’s inquiry, the public may now voice their concerns or ask questions of the Mesa Public Schools’ board during its second meeting of each month. The change was prompted by a citizen who questioned MPS about not having time for public comment on the agenda, said Tom Pickrell, general counsel for MPS. After some consideration, the governing board allowed setting aside time every other meeting for people to come forward if they have issues that are not on the agenda. “Our policy has always welcomed public comment for items that are on the agenda,” Pickrell said. The award recognizes outstanding practices and ideas that result in significant contributions to school business management and school districts. Hope for Horses ...continued from page 1
ago, when Ken Bacher, president of Triple R Horse Rescue, dropped in to hear her sing at a now-shuttered Carefree venue. “Since I played country music, Ken said he wanted me to play at a benefit for Triple R Horse Rescue because it would be a great fit,” Hoffman said. “It was a small benefit at that time at a pizza place, now it’s turned into a gala at the Carefree Resort. I’ve been a big supporter of theirs ever since then because they have helped so many horses find good homes.” Hoffman performs originals and covers from “all over” the country music map, from Patsy Cline to Carrie Underwood, from Johnny Cash to Toby Keith. And speaking of Keith, one of Hoffman’s favorite songs to cover is his “Should Have Been a Cowboy.” Hoffman will perform with a band at the gala, but her act is usually a duo with a very special keyboardist: husband Devin Delap.
“He’s actually a classically trained pianist, but he’s had to switch over to country rock,” Hoffman explained. Going from duo to a full band takes quite an adjustment. “Usually, Devin plays a lot. But with a band, we have to tone that down and let the bass and drums shine. And it’s a lot louder.” Hoffman started playing guitar at 15, when her mother bought an instrument for her brother, but he wasn’t interested. “I picked it up, hit the strings, and out came sounds,” she recalled. Hooked in the magic of it, she started taking lessons. Singing came tagging along, almost as an afterthought. “I’d play the guitar for people and they’d say, ‘I can’t tell what song that is unless I hear the words,’” Hoffman recalled. So she started singing, and she hasn’t stopped. Hoffman attended ASU, majoring
in communication, but she never gave up music. While there, she won the ASU Idol Competition in 2004, the first of many competition wins that would also include the 2012 “Sing with Sugarland” contest and the KMLE 108FM Battle of the Bands in 2014. Hoffman has been the warm-up act for Kenny Chesney, Keith Urban, Gary Allan, Easton Corbin, Phil Vassar, Ryan Shupe and the Rubberband, and Cassadee Pope and The Band Perry. Run entirely by volunteers, Triple R Horse Rescue is located on 3 acres donated by Lil Bit North Ranch in Cave Creek. He mentioned these types of concerns should be brought up with the school principal or superintendent to be resolved. “The governing board has always been very welcoming of ideas from the public, and people do occasionally send email messages to the governing board, the superintendent or the school principal,” Pickrell said. “This is another forum for concerns that they have.” Pickrell added, “Each call to the public is expected to run for 15 minutes. Each speaker would have three minutes to speak.” If there are no speakers, or more than five who wish to speak, times will be adjusted to accommodate people. MPS board meetings start at 7 p.m. in the Curriculum Services Center’s board room, 549 N. Stapley Dr. The board meets twice a month on the second and fourth Tuesdays. The first time I tried bottle cutting, I bought an extremely cheap tool at the craft store and it worked about as well as expected. A few months ago I read about the Kinkajou Bottle Cutter, which is designed to get rid of all of the problems I experienced the first time around. When I priced them on Amazon, however, I was shocked. I’m not sure I’m willing to invest $50 (or more!) in a single tool for doing casual art projects. After reviewing the list of “related products” Amazon so helpfully provides, I settled on the AGPtek Glass Bottle Cutter, which appears to address the same issues the Kinkajou was designed to take care of, but for $30 less. biz box

Step 1: Scoring I think calling these tools “glass-cutting machines” is rather misleading. They are designed to enable the user to make near-perfect scores in the glass that allow the pieces to break cleanly. I learned very quickly that even with a much better glass cutting tool I needed to start with twice as many glass containers as I planned to finish with because there’s a steep learning curve and I
broke about half of them. The trick to good bottle cutting is keeping a constant pressure on the bottle as you’re making the score. If there’s a section of the bottle where the applied pressure is lower, that’s the area where the cut won’t break cleanly, most often spiderwebbing and ruining the entire piece. The other thing I’ve learned is that the start and end of the score in the glass need to meet each other. If they are off at all when the glass splits in the next step, best case scenario is you will be left with an offset nub of glass that will take more time to sand away. Worst case scenario is the break in the glass will spiderweb through the entire bottle and ruin it.
away the sharp edges left when the pieces separated. I went over them once with 60-grit, then 120, then 240 and this was more than adequate for making the glass safe to touch. (Note: it is important to wearing gloves, eye protection and long-sleeves when using a Dremel on glass.) It throws off small, sharp shards of glass throughout the process. For the drinking glasses, I took the extra step of going over the edges by hand a final time with 400-grit sandpaper.
Drinking glasses I tried two versions of drinking glasses, one where I used glass glue to adhere the top of the bottle to its base to create stemware. The other was simpler, just turning the cut-and-sanded base into a 12-ounce tumbler.
Candle holders and vases As you can see from the picture below, the rest of the pieces I cut were turned into either candle holders or vases. I turned my kids loose on some of the finished pieces with Sharpie’s Oil-based Paint Markers to decorate. I bought the pastel collection but they’re also available in metallic and primary colors. I haven’t washed them yet, so I am not sure how durable the decorations are. I also recommend battery-powered votive candles, as the bottles that were sitting over the real candles got extremely hot.

Step 2: Separating You will need a deep pot of boiling water and another of ice-cold water. Grasp the glass piece with an oven mitt and submerge the scored section in the boiling water for at least 30 seconds. Immediately transfer to the ice water and submerge above the score. You should hear pings as the glass contracts. More often than not if I did it right, the two pieces would separate after a few seconds in the ice water. If it doesn’t separate after 30 seconds in ice water, transfer back to the hot water and continue alternating until the pieces finally separate.
Step 3: Sanding I had two intended uses for the glass pieces I cut: Vases/candle holders and drinking glasses. For the pieces that weren’t going to be used for drinking out of, I used three grits of sandpaper to smooth September 2015

Remembering a special dog She wasn’t even my dog. Not even close. Even though she and I lived in the same house, she clearly answered to another master—my husband. Still, I loved her like you love a family dog that’s been around for more years than you have fingers. She loved playing fetch. She was a retriever, so I guess that makes sense. We could throw a ball or a stick (or whatever object she was fetching that day) for hours and she’d keep going until we made her quit. Her favorite place was the lake. She loved to swim. Combine that with retrieving and you had perfection—from her perspective, at least. Each summer, she’d find herself a good stick and it would be her “toy” to fetch from the lake during the long, hot days we spent there. My husband would throw it as far as he could and she’d joyfully (and
I do mean joyfully) bound into the water—swimming once it got deep enough. She’d grab the stick in her mouth, swim back to shore and drop her toy at my husband’s feet. Then she’d give whomever was nearby a doggy shake shower before turning toward the lake to fetch again. And again. And again. As long as we’d let her. I’m so glad we had the lake for her to love. She was a good dog (great dog) in most regards. She didn’t chew or jump on the furniture. She was awesome with kids and she patiently and gently put up with the cats (sometimes with a deep doggy sigh). She was pretty good about staying in the yard (unless a neighbor’s garbage was calling to her nose). If something was broken or someone got into the cat treats, she was pretty sure she was in trouble, even when
it was clearly the cats’ fault. She was a trustworthy, loyal companion. She never did learn to walk properly on a leash. She wouldn’t relent to it, always tugging and pulling to the point that we thought she might choke. I am sure she fully understood the “heel” command. She was a smart girl. She just refused to acknowledge it. It was one of the few instances of her asserting her independence. Another involved her phobias. She was a big dog—85 pounds in her heyday—but the smallest details could put her in a tizzy. Certain floor coverings were taboo. She’d walk on wood, but not laminate. Vinyl was OK, but not her favorite. She refused to go down the stairs to the basement. The kitchen pantry terrified her. It happened to be where we kept her food so that sort of benefited us. One time we got her a fancy new water dish. She wouldn’t drink out of it because it scared her. She went out the back door to do her business, but would only access it from the right side of the door
frame. She wouldn’t go out the door leading to the garage. The garage itself, however, was fine. We quit trying to figure her out years ago and just loved her for what she was— quirks and all—because every family has its quirks. The hardest part about having a dog is that they grow old too soon. She was old and this has been coming for some time. But you’re never ready. Not really. I’m not sure it’s possible. Still, I didn’t realize how much I wasn’t ready—to wake up without her under the bed. To never throw the stick for her again, or get the eyeball or make her eggs. She wasn’t even my dog. But she was our dog. And she was a part of our family—an important part. I’m going to miss her. Sure am. Already do. Tammy Hines’ Doubletree Chocolate Chip Cookies So many of my fondest memories are related to food, and the beginning of the school year is no exception. I had a best friend in first grade. Didn’t everyone? To this day, I still remember the beyond-delicious homemade chocolate chip cookie that Michele’s mom would pack in her lunchbox. After baking and testing batch after batch, the results are a cookie that our friends and family can’t resist. Be prepared to never love another chocolate chip cookie like this one!” As I plant my face in a plateful of decadent chocolate chips, I’m thanking Tammy and her dedication to the pursuit of “The Cookie,” while reliving memories of snowy Lake Tahoe school days and the best warm-out-of-theoven chocolate chips a 6-year-old could ever dream of ! Tammy Hines’ Doubletree Chocolate Chip Cookies 1/2 cup quick cooking oats 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda 1 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon 1 cup unsalted butter 3/4 cup brown sugar 3/4 cup white sugar 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon fresh lemon juice 2 large eggs 3 cups semisweet premium chocolate chips (Ghirardelli or Guittard preferred)
In a separate bowl, cream together the butter, sugars, vanilla and lemon. Add eggs and mix until smooth. Stir in dry ingredients. Mix in chocolate chips and nuts. Spoon rounded balls (about 1/4 cup each) onto a parchment or foil-lined cookie sheet about 2 inches apart. Bake 10-12 minutes or until light golden brown on outside edges but still soft in the middle. Makes 40 large cookies. Note: Tammy refrigerates the dough, which helps to hold the cookies together. And Lee (who says he hovers over every batch to make sure he gets to scrape the bowl clean) tells me that these cookies freeze well, too.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine the oats, flour, soda, salt and cinnamon. September 2015

“We play all of the Pink Floyd music, which we try to do note-for-note, as it is on the albums. It’s been very well received in the last 27 years.” Playing the exact arrangements of the songs means the band cannot improvise. “We always started with a goal of making it sound like Pink Floyd,” he said. “We have to be focused and make it sound like it was Pink Floyd playing. “There might be some improvisation in some of the earlier music they wrote. Sometimes there’s no one particular version that’s maybe a definitive version. But like with ‘Dark Side of the Moon,’ the album is such a famous and well-known album that we want to make it sound like the album. If we go off on a tangent and start doing our own solos, it doesn’t sound like Pink Floyd and that defeats the purpose of what we’re trying to do.” To keep it fresh, The Australian Pink Floyd Show’s musicians change the setlist annually. By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski Dubbed the world’s greatest tribute band, The Australian Pink Floyd Show has sold out venues worldwide. Its fans range from teenagers to Baby Boomers. But there’s one particular ticketholder that stuck out in one musician’s mind. “We took the show to the U.K. in ’93 and David Gilmour came along to the show,” said keyboardist Jason Sawford of Pink Floyd’s former guitarist and colead vocalist. “I said, ‘Do you have a problem with this?’ And he was totally fine with it. It was incredible.” The Australian Pink Floyd Show formed 27 years ago as a way of honoring the classic rock legends. The band, along with Led Zeppelin 2, will perform at the Mesa Arts Center on Wednesday, Sept. 2, and patrons can expect a full Pink Floyd experience. “We put on a Pink Floyd-style show,” Sawford said. “We have a big light show. We have lasers. We have animation and projections on a big, circular screen. We’ve got inflatables. That’s the visual aspect.
The Australian Pink Floyd Show’s keyboardist Jason Sawford said Pink Floyd’s music stands the test of time because of the quality of the tunes.
“If you have a great audience and they have a lot of energy, as they do in the States, (that helps),” Sawford said. “It gives you a lot of energy in the playing of it. Sawford has a quick explanation about why Pink Floyd’s music still resonates with those fans. “I guess it’s the quality of the music,” he said. “It remains. People want to hear that guitar rock thing. It’s music that appeals to all generations. As we get more well known, it spreads out and maybe more young people come and check it out. But ultimately, it’s

Getting a haircut is fun, entertaining at Sharkey’s As a father, Shane Wolfersberger knows the importance of finding a salon that offers great haircuts for kids in a welcoming atmosphere. So when Shane and his wife, Ali, decided to open a business, the couple studied various kids’ salon franchises. The Wolfersbergers, who have seven children between them, were impressed with Sharkey’s Cuts for Kids and selected it as the perfect franchise for them. The Wolfersbergers opened their Mesa salon in May. “We were really excited about the business model for Sharkey’s Cuts for Kids. It just seemed more modern, exciting and up to date,” Shane said. “Our salon has lots of bright colors and fun chairs and three Xbox stations. Big flat-screen televisions are playing on the town

Right now, Shane said the bulk of their business is walk-in, although they do offer appointments and they hope to eventually offer online appointment booking. While the kids are waiting for their turn in one of the colorful chairs, Shane said they can stay busy playing at a LEGO table or drawing on a chalk wall. Sharkey’s Cuts for Kids is also a good place for kids with special needs to come in for a haircut, Shane said. Babies or toddlers who come in for their first haircut will get their picture taken and a lock of their hair will be saved in a special card for their parents, Shane said. “We also offer glamour parties for kids. We brought in our own girls for training, which they enjoyed.” The salon in general is so enjoyable, in fact, that Shane has seen a steady increase in the number of customers. “We already have kids asking to come back to see specific people.” Sharkey’s Cuts for Kids is located at 2015 N. Divorce and custody turns absurd Children ordered to talk to father or be found in contempt In any divorce where custody of the children is contested, absent an agreement between the father and mother, the decision is left to the ineffective, expensive and arbitrary court system. Judicial officers (judges and commissioners) are to consider the “best interest” of the children in deciding custody and parenting time (Arizona, now uses the terminology legal decisionmaking). Judges do their best, but the court process is cumbersome and expensive when it comes to trying to make a decision in the children’s best interests while considering the wishes of the parents and the children. The process can quickly become adversarial and the judge ultimately makes a decision, sometimes good and sometimes bad. In a Michigan case, three siblings, ages 9, 10 and 15, were ordered to talk to their dad. The kids refused, stating their dad had hit their mom and they had witnessed his violent temper. The judge ordered them to have lunch and visit with their dad. They refused. The judge told them if they refused they would be found in contempt of court and be sent to a juvenile detention facility until they have graduated from high school. The judge said to the 15-year-old, “I ordered you to talk to your father...you chose not to...you defied a direct court order...I am finding you in contempt.” The 15-year-old said, “I thought there were rules for not hitting someone.” The judge remarked, “You are defiant, you have no manners,” and sent them to juvenile detention. worse, the children now are at the detention center and neither the mother nor any of her relatives can visit the children there, only the father! There are always two sides or more to every story. We don’t know all the facts. It seems clear to me the judge was frustrated and overreacted in her detention and contempt order. It also reminds us how ill equipped our court system is in resolving family disputes. Also glaringly obvious is the traumatic harm domestic violence has in the home. Hopefully, you will never be faced with divorce or custody battles. If you are, remember kids are fragile people, not property. They have feelings and emotions and can suffer from embattled parents. Always look at it from a child’s perspective, not your own selfish or irrational response to a stressful divorce. Kids should not be forced to choose between parents or be punished by the judge and sent to detention.
