he North Valley has been my home for a total of 11 years. In that time, I’ve seen the erection of the Anthem Veterans Memorial, watched Safeway sell to Haggen and then return as Safeway, eaten at emerging mom-and-pop restaurants throughout Tramonto like Echo Sushi, Hong Kong Asian Cuisine and Azool Grill, and applauded the EPCOR water station providing a source of potable water for Desert Hills and New River residents. But most importantly, I’ve watched Anthem and surrounding areas become so much more than just places people drive past on Interstate 17 on their way to northern Arizona. They have become hometowns for families, workplaces for professionals, and communities with residents invested in their schools, churches and infrastructure.
“Community” is the key word to me when it comes to producing 85086. This is your community magazine, and I want it to be a resource for residents to read about all the news in their neighborhoods, from school openings like the impending Standing Stones Christian Academy (page 10) to spotlights on local businesses like AZ Perfect Comfort (page 18) to a peek inside arts and culture spots like StudioWest and MudPie Studios (page 16). I also want to give a platform to people in the community to write about the things that inspire them, which is why we’re continuing to run columns by Boulder Creek High School student Emma Suttell, Judge Gerald A. Williams, realtor Shelley Sakala and Kelly Collins of Premier Wellness.

IDEAS FOR LIVING WELL
Five Fabulous
Fall Foliage Drives
Get ready for Arizona’s best leaf-peeping season
W
By Sherry Jackson
hile it may seem far away, very soon the hot, hot summer will give way to cooler temperatures and fall breezes. As autumn ushers in, the higher elevation destinations in Arizona put on their annual rush of natural splendor, with trees bathed in rich hues of red and gold. Many believe prime leaf-peeping is relegated to the Northeast United States, but here in Arizona, there’s plenty of fall foliage to feast our eyes upon. Arizona is home to six national forests with millions of acres of trees. Oak, maple, elm, poplar and aspen are just some of the trees producing vibrant colors as they shed their green summer coats. This year, like others, the National Forest Service expects the fall color season to begin in early September. The colors will emerge in the higher elevations and
then work their way down to the lower elevations, peaking in late September/early October. While it’s still too early for any definite predictions on how the season will go, there’s no better time to plan ahead with these five fabulous drives to check out Arizona’s best fall foliage.
Flagstaff/San Francisco Peaks loop
It’s true: Flagstaff seems to be Arizona’s favorite mountain destination, and for good reason. Cool weather, towering pine trees and an eclectic downtown are all a big draw. The area is also one of the first places in Arizona where one can experience fall’s brilliant splendor with prime leaf-peeping kicking off (usually) in early September. The Peaks Loop, a 44-mile drive around Flagstaff’s San Francisco Peaks, is one of the most scenic, with meadows of brilliant gold and aspen forests donning bright yellow leaves against the aspen’s stark white trunks. Be sure to allow for plenty of time (about two hours) for the drive, and be prepared for some bumps and dips along the graveled forest road. While in Flagstaff, be sure to View of Flagstaff’s fall foliage along the Abineau Trail (Photo courtesy Coconino National Forest) drive up to Arizo-

na Snowbowl. At an altitude of 9,200 feet, this skiing and snowboarding destination offers a bird’s-eye view of fall foliage, especially while riding the chairlift up the western side of the San Francisco Peaks – up to 11,500 feet. Another stop: the Arboretum in Flagstaff. The 200 acres of gardens showcase native plants and have some pretty impressive views.
Sedona/Oak Creek Canyon The yellow, red and gold hues of the changing leaves in fall really pop against the red mountain backdrop of Sedona and nearby Oak Creek Canyon. Foliage in this area normally peaks in late September/early October, so hop in the car and head north on Highway 89A from Sedona toward Flagstaff. This drive meanders through Oak Creek Canyon and alongside Oak Creek. Several pullouts along the way will provide vantage points to take some photos and enjoy the dramatic fall colors and the tall trees set up against the canyon walls. While in Sedona, be sure to peruse the shops downtown, take one of Sedona’s famous Jeep tours or simply relax at a café along the banks of Oak Creek. The cooler weather means it’s also the perfect time to take a hike on one of Sedona’s multitude of trails. Arguably the best display of fall colors is along the West Fork Trail, which begins at the Call of the
Canyon trailhead just off Highway 89A. The 6-mile trail is fairly easy, although there are a couple of stream crossings with stepping stones. Grab a picnic lunch while in town and take in the changing leaves reflected in the babbling brook.
Mt. Lemmon/Catalina Highway Southern Arizona doesn’t usually come to mind as a typical leaf-peeping destination, but Tucson’s towering Santa Catalina Mountains rise above the city at more than 9,000 feet, providing the high elevation needed to make leaves turn to vibrant, earthy shades. Mid to late October is time to hit the 27mile Catalina Highway, which will take you through the Coronado National Forest to the peak of Mount Lemmon. Amber, red and gold leaves dot the hillside trees, and several turnoffs and trails provide many opportunities for exploration along the way. Be sure to stop at the Mt. Lemmon General Store and Gift Shop in the small community of Summerhaven to pick up some of their famous fudge. Or make advanced reservations for a SkyNights StarGazing evening at the Mt. Lemmon SkyCenter, which features two of the largest telescopes in the Southwest.
South Tucson/Madera Canyon
The Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests in the White Mountains comes to colorful life in October. (Photo courtesy U.S. Forest Service)
White Mountains/Pinetop-Lakeside A drive on Highway 60 northwest from the Valley traverses through the Salt River Canyon, a picturesque route sporting dramatic canyon views and the sounds of the Salt River snaking through the canyons. Shrubs and bushes take on a glorious sheen of gold and red during the fall. But the main destination is the White Mountains, nestled in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests, which encompasses over 2 million acres. Here, elevations of 11,000 feet mean fall foliage usually begins in early October. A drive along Highway 260 through the small towns of Pinetop, Lakeside, Greer and Show Low offer remarkable colors among the towering oak, pine and fir trees. In the shade of yellow, orange and red leaves, visitors can cast a line in one of the area's 50-plus lakes, try their luck at the Hon-Dah Casino or just enjoy the cool, crisp mountain air.
Also located in the southern portion of the state, Madera Canyon sits about 50 miles south of Tucson. The area is popular with birdwatchers – it’s home to more than 230 species – and it’s also a robust riparian preserve. Fall colors abound here, usually in mid to late October, with oak, cottonwood and sycamore trees popping gold and orange leaves. Take Interstate 19 past Tucson to the Continental Road exit, and follow the signs to Madera Canyon. The narrow, two-lane, curving road is paved through the canyon and takes visitors alongside the northwest face of the Santa Rita Mountains. In addition to world-class bird-watching, there are plenty of creeks, picnic areas and trailheads to explore. While in the area, be sure to stop at Mission San Xavier Del Bac in Tucson. The Spanish Colonial, white adobe church was built in the 1700s and has some amazing sculptures and carvings. Also nearby is the Titan Missile Museum, the only place

the public can see one of the Titan II missile sites from the Cold War era.
Bonus Drive: Mogollon Rim Just north of Payson lies the Mogollon Rim, a rugged escarpment that forms the southern limit of the Colorado Plateau within the Coconino National Forest. At an elevation of 4,000 to 5,000 feet above sea level, the Rim provides amazing views and borders the 2.8 million-acre Tonto National Forest. Forest Road 300/Rim Road is an approximately 45-mile trek along the edge of the Mogollon Rim. Go north on State Route 87 from Payson and turn right onto FR 300. Continue on the dirt road until you get to State Route 260. Make sure the weather is decent, pack a picnic and gas up in advance for this trek. It’s not unusual to see only trees and wildlife for the entire journey on this seldom-traveled route.

VETERAN´S CHARITY
A True Champion Time in the Army shaped Anthem entrepreneur Frankie Ruiz By Weiss O’Connor
G
iven his time in the jungles of Panama and the tropics of Hawaii, veteran Frankie Ruiz can truly appreciate the simplicity of the desertscape. Yet the eight-year Anthem resident and owner of the successful Azteca Home Services says he can’t help but “kind of miss” his time serving in the U.S. Army. It was in the military that Ruiz learned and developed many of the values that shaped his life: humility, honor and pride. Talk to Ruiz today, and he exudes pride in his service, his business, and his family. He also has a driven mindset that is surely a vital factor in his successes in all facets of life. But in high school, he wasn't yet sure of what direction he wanted to take with his life, so he gravitated toward the military. Despite his initial inclination toward the Marine Corps, Ruiz was swayed into signing up for the Army because of the multitude of opportunities it offered. One of those opportunities was playing football. “The possibility of playing football for the Army one day... obviously played on those emotions,” Ruiz says with a smile. The forward-looking Ruiz made the most of his time in the service. “I maximized all my schooling,” Ruiz says, “and I was always, really, a pretty decent athlete.” He adds he “could run 2 miles in 11 and a half minutes.” But he laughs, hinting that he doesn’t know if he could accomplish that today. During his two years in Panama, Ruiz made a point to “hang out with the locals,” which helped him improve his Spanish, a language he would later study at Northern Arizona University. Through programs offered by the Army, Ruiz attended night school. Then he was faced with a tough decision between two excellent opportunities for his Army career: going to Ranger school or traveling to Hawaii to be closer to his parents. Ruiz requested

both locations, but when orders came for Ranger school and Hawaii, he was forced to choose. As a “family guy” through and through, Ruiz chose Hawaii, where he continued to attend night school. After winning the prestigious Green to Gold scholarship, Ruiz went to NAU, where he could complete his bachelor’s degree in business and Spanish, as well as receive a commission in the Army to become an officer. Ruiz soon learned he “didn’t particularly care for the officer side of the house.” Officer ranks tend to be more political, he says. "[You] schmooze your way up. So almost immediately I actually resigned my commission.” He decided to stay out of the Army. Concurrently, Ruiz married and had his first son, beginning a new chapter in his life. Today, Ruiz has “three amazing children,” Xavier, Diego and Savannah. He says it’s because of his children that he became an entrepreneur. When he left the service, Ruiz sold cars and “turned out to be pretty successful,” he says. But the long hours cut into his family life. With Azteca Home Services – a pest control, landscaping and pool services company – Ruiz can fulfill his desire to give back to his family and become deeply involved in his community. In 2016, he was co-chairman for Anthem’s annual Veteran’s Day Parade. Azteca Home Services has also sponsored nonprofits such as Drive-By Blessings, which provides furniture and used household items to veterans who are homeless and are finding new homes. He truly appreciates the “small-

town feel” of Anthem, where “everybody knows everybody.” Ruiz says the Army instilled in him discipline and the opportunity to “be a part of a huge team.” He says he “loved every part of it” and feels that “everybody should do at least two years in the military.” “There’s not one person in this world that can say they did it by themselves, and I wouldn’t be where I’m at right now if I didn’t have an amazing team or a family that supported me the way that they did,” he says. Throughout his life, Ruiz has strived to live as a “champion” and “lead from the front,” philosophies that he demonstrates every day. - Weiss O’Connor, a sophomore at Boulder Creek High School, is involved in Veterans Heritage Project, band, Boulder Creek soccer, and Civil Air Patrol.

Edifying Education Standing Stones Christian Academy to open soon By Shelley Sakala
I
f you’ve recently driven on North Valley Parkway, you may have noticed a new structure rising from the fields. Standing Stones Christian Academy will soon be open. For more than a decade, Standing Stones Community Church has been serving Phoenix from its original campus on 16th Avenue, providing worship services, spiritual growth, and community resources through its various ministries. A few years ago they expanded their children’s ministry into a full preschool, and the response was both amazing and immediate. In less than two years, enrollment grew to capacity, with a waiting list for new students. These space limitations conflicted with the church’s desire to serve as many people in the community as possible. School of-

HIGH SCHOOL
Leading by Example Boulder Creek senior Joe Pitts raises the bar for student leaders around Arizona By Emma Suttell
H
eading into his senior year, Joe Pitts undoubtedly brought with him a new level of leadership ability. While most students use high school as an opportunity to jump-start their training and skills, Joe has been honing his skills throughout his high school career. Along with serving three terms in Boulder Creek High School’s student government and continuing onto a fourth as student body secretary, Joe is heavily involved in Boys State, an organization run by the American Legion focused on training young men in civics, government and leadership. During the last week of July, Joe was select-

Thanks to a new law, which went into effect on August 3, 2018, sexual assault victims can now do so as well. The bipartisan legislation was adopted in response to a woman who was attacked by a neighbor. She was unable to break her lease without penalty under the existing law because the person who sexually assaulted her had been neither her husband nor boyfriend. As such, her attack did not meet the definition of domestic violence. Now either a sexual assault or a domestic violence victim can lawfully break their lease without penalty as long as the victim provides at least one of the following documents: • a copy of either an Order of Protection or an Injunction Against Harassment with the victim listed as the Plaintiff. • a copy of a report from a law enforcement agency stating that the victim reported herself (or himself) as a victim of either domestic violence or sexual assault. The tenant needs to provide documentation to the landlord within 30 days of the actions, events, or circumstances that resulted in the tenant being a victim. If the tenant misses this deadline, the landlord can waive the 30-day time standard. The victim still must pay rent
owed through the date of the lease termination, but the tenant will not owe any penalties for breaking the lease early. If the tenant does not want to move, he or she has the option of requiring her landlord either to rekey or to replace the locks. There are some substantial penalties if someone falsely claims to be a victim just to break their lease. By statute, the landlord could seek treble damages from the former tenant. In other words, a court could award the landlord three times the amount that was actually owed. This new law is a good law. Everyone, perhaps especially crime victims, should be able to feel secure in their own homes. - Judge Gerald A. Williams is the Justice of the Peace for the North Valley Justice Court. The court’s jurisdiction includes Anthem and Desert Hills.

he Valley of the Sun has a rich history of making local artistry accessible to the masses, from Southwestern desert paintings and Zuni pottery to Hopi textiles and Spanish tinwork. But isn’t it just as important for Arizonans to have accessibility to worldly works – Old Masters, Impressionism, Asian Art, contemporary, abstract – or connect with art we create from our own experiences? Galleries throughout the greater Phoenix area offer glimpses into every corner of the art world, but there are gems to be discovered that take it even a step further – and each of their stories is about helping you connect with your own. In Anthem, two art studios, StudioWest and MudPie, are venturing out to expand the artistic experience for locals and nationwide visitors alike, and they may even help you tap into your inner artist. StudioWest has offered Anthem locals easy access to reproductions of legendary artists’

work from within a unique mixture of categories – think American Art, Impressionism, Asian Art, Audubon, the Old Italian Masters, even vintage nursery rhymes, magazine covers, and Santa Claus art. Primarily an online studio and high-end giclée printer, StudioWest got its start about
20 years ago by reproducing art by the Old Masters for schools to use in classroom instruction, specifically the Great Hearts Academies in Phoenix. “The schools use classical art to support the literature they teach,” explains owner Douglas Spurlock. “They decorate halls with images of Old Masters, so we reproduced most of that art for them. That’s how we ended up having this huge catalog of about 1,500 Old Masters’ images, and we’re selling that art as far away as Austin, Texas, now.” From there, owners Douglas and Camille Spurlock continued to handpick dozens of artists for the gallery, including American StudioWest owners Camille and Douglas Spurlock. Masters like Thomas Cole and Impressionist pioneer Claude Monet, as well as Vincent Van Gogh and Botticelli. While visitors can choose to visit the workshop and see how the reproductions or custom printing works, much of the creative appeal at StudioWest is connecting with the art in the online gallery that turns into eyecatching reproductions in a home or working space. However, StudioWest doesn’t just focus on household names. The Spurlocks work with local up-and-coming artists in all types of media – oil painters, pastel artists, fabric artists, photographers – as well as anyone who wants to turn a photograph into a piece of art. “One of the things we specialize in is that we can take current art of even an iPhone photo and enlarge it, then print it on pretty much anything, like a canvas, photographic paper or fabric,” Camille Spurlock says. As an artist and graphic designer herself, Camille has a knack for relating to an artist’s needs and wants, and it’s imperative that the equipment at StudioWest keeps up with industry standards to produce high-quality scans for reproduction, enlarge smart phone images, and restore artworks and photos. From working on art that dates back hundreds of years on canvas to just yesterday on a smart phone, the Spurlocks say they recently worked with several artists that continue to surprise and delight with refreshing perspectives.

GETTING WORK DONE
Business AZ Perfect Comfort offers a wide range of HVAC systems and services By Lynette Carrington
A
Z Perfect Comfort is a full-service air conditioning and heating company that installs and services a wide range of climate control and related systems including central air conditioners and heat pumps, water heaters, air purifiers, air cleaners, humidifiers, ventilators and other indoor air quality systems. The husband and wife team of John and Robin McCombs originally hails from Iowa and are the owners and founders of AZ Perfect Comfort. A job transfer for John back in 2004 brought the couple to the Valley. Robin’s background was originally in nursing, and John was working in corporate America. “We chose the HVAC industry because
we felt there was a need for a good, honest, ethical contractor,” Robin McCombs explains. “We felt we could bring that to the business and start a company that was based on values and ethics and not taking advantage of customers.” They founded AZ Perfect Comfort in 2015 and service mostly homes and businesses in the North and West Valleys. They are committed to offering the best in customer care via their highly trained technicians, who are company employees and not paid on commission. All technicians with AZ Perfect Comfort are hourly employees. “They are not commissionbased, so they’re not trying to sell something that the customer doesn’t need,” McCombs says. Most AZ Perfect Comfort technicians are NATE certified, which means they’ve shown their ability to maintain and repair all makes and models of heating and cooling equipment. Additionally, technicians undergo factory training and ongoing professional development. The extensive training allows technicians to complete most repairs. Since 2015, the feedback from customers has been stellar. “We didn’t come from the HVAC industry, so we started out with zero customers,” McCombs explains. “Every The McCombses are committed to offering the best in customer care via their highly trained technicians, who are company employees and not paid on commission. single customer has been found through networking groups and marketing. We’ve built up a really good reputation, and we work hard to make sure our customers are well taken care of.” She adds the company enjoys five-star Google reviews across the board. Arizona’s brutal weather can be hard on AC and heating systems, but McCombs has three easy suggestions to help keep units in good shape throughout the year. The first is to receive routine maintenance every spring and fall. During an AC check-up, items like wiring, capacitors and refrigerant levels are examined. “This will let us catch small problems before they become big problems,” she says. Secondly, indoor and outdoor coils should be cleaned frequently to ensure that a heating and cooling system is running at maximum efficiency. Finally, one of the easiest things to do is to routinely change air filters. McCombs explains, “Dirty air filters are the number one cause of compressor failure.” “When we acquire a new customer, our new customers are much more than just a number,” McCombs says. “We remember their names, and we really bring them in and make them part of the family. From the office personnel to the technicians, we care about those customers more than just a monetary transaction.”

WHERE LIFE HAPPENS
Autumn Aesthetic 5 interior design tips for your home this fall By Lynette Carrington
C
ooler temperatures are right around the corner as we simmer into the fall months. Making some easy and inexpensive design adjustments to your home can put you in the fall mood and bring a festive atmosphere to your living space. Certified home stager and redesigner Lori Kinsale of Clean Lines Staging in Anthem has developed five fun ideas to incorporate fall color, décor and design into homes for the upcoming season.
A Warm Invitation The front door and patio area give visitors a first impression of your home and set the stage for what they can expect inside. “Put up a fall wreath on the front door and, secondly, swap out the usual welcome mat for one that is fall-themed,” Kinsale says. “Layering works, too. I have a bench with pillows on the patio and a lantern next to it.” Gigantic mums in deep orange and yel-
low with groups of decorative pumpkins also impart the feeling of fall. The look works up through Thanksgiving, too.
Updated Color Palette Consider the current paint hues of your home and kitchen counters. “For those with beige and neutral colors, I recommend Lori Kinsale is owner of Clean Lines Staging in Anthem. Her fall design tips include updating your color palette for fall. (Photo by Pablo Robles) decorating with traditional warm colors – yellows, browns and oranges,” Kinsale says. Mixing pillow textures is also a hot trend. The addition of a faux fur throw adds another touch of luxury and is an easy way to experiment with a new pop of color.
Jars and Vessels Apothecary jars and large glass vessels are yet another way to add whimsy, color and fun design for fall. Mini-pumpkins, small candles, artificial gourds or even seasonal candies poured into glass containers make for festive décor. “Doing a grouping of apothecary jars and creating mini vignettes is fun and inexpensive,” Kinsale says. Decorative jars and vessels and small items to display in them are readily available just about everywhere.

Coffee Station Kinsale explains, “This is one of my favorite things to create when I do seasonal décor at someone’s house. I like to put together a coffee bar station and make it fun and whimsical.” She suggests keeping everything contained on one large serving tray including a coffeemaker, a large glass container with massive marshmallows, monogrammed paper napkins in fall hues, colorful paper straws, mini pumpkins and a cute dish with peanut M&Ms or pumpkin candy corn. Open your textbook and place it flat on the dissected paper bag (it should look like a giant piece of brown paper) and cut around the book, leaving about two inches of paper bag above the book and three inches on each side. Center the book and create creases along the top and bottom edges (like you are wrapping a gift). Fold and tape any excess paper in place. Then use different colored Sharpies to personalize your cover with doodles, word art or patterns.

Chunky Tassel Bookmarks Here’s a fun and funky way to ensure your kids won’t ruin their textbooks by dog-earing the pages – make your own bookmark! You’ll need a ball of yarn, scissors, a piece of cardboard, a ruler, a pencil, cardstock, Mod Podge, a foam brush and a hole punch. To create the tassel, wrap a piece of yarn around a small piece of cardboard until you’ve reached the desired thickness (we recommend wrapping it around about 50 times). Slide a small piece of yarn under the yarn bundled around the cardboard, then double-knot it at the top. Cut all the yarn on the opposite side, tightly double-knotting a piece of yarn near the top to make the “head” of the tassel. Tightly double-knot another piece of yarn underneath the previous piece and cut off all uneven ends. To create the bookmark, cut out a 4.5 x 6.5inch piece of cardstock. Fold the bookmark lengthwise and apply a thin layer of Mod Podge with the foam brush on the inside of the cardstock; fold again and let dry. Use the hole punch to punch a hole about half an inch from the top of the bookmark and doubleknot the tassel through the hole.

It may sound a little unorthodox, but trust us – it’s delicious! Since September in Arizona doesn’t really feel like fall at all, this is a great alternative to a piping hot pumpkin spice latte – it’s cool and refreshing but will also remind you of sauntering through pumpkin patches and baking pumpkin pie. This recipe makes two servings. I chose to garnish mine with strawberry and avocado slices and, of course, festive straws!
Pumpkin Pie Green Smoothie - 1 1/4 cups organic spinach (frozen)
- 1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
- 2 cups sliced bananas and strawberries (frozen)
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/3 cup pumpkin puree - 1 cup unsweetened almond milk
- 1 teaspoon maple syrup - 3-4 slices fresh avocado
Combine ingredients in a blender and blend into a creamy and smooth consistency, scraping the sides as needed. If the consistency is too thick, add more almond milk. Taste periodically and add more pumpkin pie spice for pumpkin flavor, more maple syrup for sweetness or more avocado slices for texture. Serve immediately and garnish with fruit or vegetable of your choice.

On a Roll The North Valley’s newest sushi spot challenges the status quo By Madison Rutherford
I
f you’re operating on the assumption that all sushi spots are the same, Echo Sushi will seriously challenge your belief system when it comes to rice and raw fish. It is surprisingly rare to find an establishment that seems to focus just as much on the feeling of the space as on its food, but Echo has struck a balance with both. It blends daring flavor profiles and flawless presentation with an intimate, urban atmosphere. Upon entering, we were met with a warm and inviting vibe that felt less like a sushi restaurant and more like a sanctuary. I’ve eaten at my fair share of sushi places, across the Valley and beyond, and there’s
something that sets Echo apart. Maybe it’s the venue – a small strip mall storefront with fewer than 10 tables and five seats at the sushi bar. It’s quaint and cozy, dimly lit by lowhanging lamps, and classy without being too upscale. Maybe it’s the staff, which possesses an above-average level of attentiveness, or the food – inspired, aesthetically pleasing, bold in flavor and filling. Speaking of food, we recommend sipping on some hot sake while you pore over the diverse menu, which boasts a plethora of traditional dishes with a modern twist. Choose from a wide selection of sashimi, sushi rolls, poke, ramen, udon noodles and entrées like
unagi donburi (filleted eel), Korean bulgogi (grilled beef) and chicken katsu. What’s the twist? Echo uses black rice, often referred to as “forbidden rice,” as it was exclusively reserved for royalty during China’s Qing and Ming dynasties. It is now regarded as a superfood because it is the only rice that contains anthocyanin, a disease-fighting antioxidant that boosts the immune system and increases cognitive function. Don’t be intimidated by its inky hue – it tastes exactly like regular rice, but is slightly more filling. Once we ordered, the food came out remarkably fast; we were served miso soup

almost immediately after we handed over our menus, followed quickly by a plate of four fresh, piping hot egg rolls ($5), the six-piece Las Vegas Roll ($10) and the eight-piece Vegetable Roll ($5), which both came with a generous helping of pickled ginger and wasabi. Then came the main event – the daunting and delicious Echo Tower ($14), a rotund, cake-like masterpiece with a black rice base, topped with spicy crab and eel, garnished with thinly sliced avocado, tobiko, tempura flakes and radish sprouts, sprinkled with sesame seeds and smothered with eel sauce and spicy mayo. There was more than enough to satisfy three hungry twentysomethings; the only problem was we didn’t know how to go about eating it at first. We ended up cutting it into slices with a chopstick and sporadically plucking at it until our waitress noticed our struggle and brought us a bundle of forks. Though it is initially a little confusing, the Echo Tower is a unique and delicious eating experience to share with friends or use as an icebreaker on a first date. One thing Echo is lacking is a happy hour menu. Most sushi places serve handrolls, tempura
or bottles of Sapporo for pocket change on certain nights of the week, but Echo’s prices are always the same. Though some of their entrées and specialty rolls are on the pricey side, you get what you pay for in quality and quantity. Most of the appetizers and house rolls, which include variations of the ever-popular California Roll, are under $10. Also, if you’re a sushi purist and rarely stray from the traditional, onyx-colored onigiri might not be your thing. However, there are plenty of menu items that don’t include rice. Another downside is Echo’s size: While its small, intimate atmosphere is part of its charm for couples and small groups, it’s probably not the best option for big parties. Echo has barely been open for a year, but it has already created quite a buzz in the community. Sushi restaurants are few and far between in this neck of the woods, so it’s refreshing to see one take creative (and delicious!) risks, and thrive because of them.

ibrant hair and nails, vivid makeup and sky-high eyelashes are just a few bold trends taking center stage in the beauty world right now. Below you will find five of the most up-tothe-minute beauty trends and where to try them out nearby.
Eyelash Extensions Lash extensions aim to enhance the length, volume and thickness of the eyelashes by applying synthetic lashes to the natural lashes one by one. Results will vary depending on the length and curl of the natural eyelash, but Nordic Lash House provides an array of customized options, whether you want a classic, natural look or a dramatic one with lots of volume. Unlike fake eyelashes, you won’t feel like they’re weighing down your eyelids or worry about

them falling off. Extensions will also cut your eye makeup routine in half, as you won’t need to put on mascara or eyeliner. The downside to eyelash extensions is that they are a bit pricey and require a fill every one to three weeks to maintain the look, but they are a huge confidence booster, timesaver and great alternative to clumping on the volumizing mascara or wearing false eyelashes. Dermaplaning A straight razor to the face sounds beyond daunting, but that’s exactly what the latest trend in skincare and hair removal entails. Dermaplaning is the process of using a small, sterile scalpel to gently scrape off dead skin cells and vellus hair (aka “peach fuzz”) from the face. Does it work? The results speak for themselves.

Colorful eye shadow is hot this fall. (Photo by morganka)
Colorful Eye Shadows Goodbye smoky eye, hello eye-catching colors. While shimmery shadows are definitely having a moment, there’s no denying that this year is all about bright, bold pops of color, and Ulta Beauty is the perfect place to find your new favorite eye shadow. The Happy Valley Towne Center location offers professional makeup application services as well as makeup lessons, so you can learn what colors are best for your complexion and recreate the bold shadow look at home. You can also buy a rainbow of individual eye shadows and palettes from hip, high-end brands like
Gel extensions are a healthy alternative to acrylic nails; not only do they not use harsh chemicals, but they won’t leave your nails brittle and breaking off. They also last longer, look more natural and are quicker and easier to put on and take off. When it comes to fake nails, gel extensions are the way to go. The only problem? They’re generally a little pricier than acrylics, and not all salons offer them. However, Kolour near Carefree Crossing offers affordable gel extensions in all the styles that are often associated with acrylics (oval, almond, coffin, etc.), but fume-free and with half the hassle. Gel extensions usually last about three weeks; removing them simply requires wrapping the nails in foil and soaking them in acetone. Kolour Nails, 2815 W. Smoothie Operators Lifestyle 2 Nutrition makes transformative shakes and teas By Eric Newman
A
t Lifestyle 2 Nutrition in Anthem, visitors can sip on a chilly “Blue Monkey,” drink some sweet “Cake Batter,” or even consume a little “Elvis” (peanut butter and banana, anyone?). The nutrition store, owned by Lanie Sybouts and her brother, Wes Mason, specializes in lowcalorie protein shakes and green tea drinks aimed at helping people reach their nutrition and health goals. We caught up with Lanie to ask a few questions about what motivates her, and what her products can do for people looking to change their diets and lives. What motivated you to open this store? I understand you were a professional athlete.
Yes, I came from a cycling background. I was a professional rider, and I’ve always been into health. I just tried one of the shakes at another store one time, and I wanted another career change, so I opened up my own store, and I wanted to help people lose weight. That’s my whole focus now, because there’s so much obesity here in the country, and I want to get people on the right track. What are the biggest benefits for people who drink your shakes? Protein. lost a ton and really leaned out. He’s a totally different person. They both didn’t realize how much of a transformation they’d had until I showed them pictures of both before and after. It still gives me chills to see how it helps people. In addition to protein shakes, you have a lot of tea products, too. What are some of the benefits of those? They have a lot of natural antioxidants. The caffeine actually boosts metabolism, and we add aloe into our teas, which helps you with the absorption, and it also aids in intestinal health. So, it kind of sets your body up in order to receive all the nutrition that you’re going to get out of the shake. What would you tell someone who’s new to this type of store or this type of a lifestyle that you’re selling? How do you get people interested? Well, they just come in here and with their mouths open – first-timers and third – just looking at the menu, surprised how many awesome flavors there are. We guide them about the different ingredients, and it’s all about education. So whether they just want to come in here and have a shake, or whether they want to lose weight, or they even want to gain weight and muscle, I can help. Lifestyle 2 Nutrition 3434 W. The Madonna Eye Lift provides non-surgical eye rejuvenation By Kelly Collins
L
ike the pop diva’s lyrics, the Madonna Eye Lift is a non-surgical procedure that is “Just like a prayer” (or an answer to one) – and “It’s like a dream to me.” The Madonna Eye Lift technique was pioneered by board-certified dermatologist Dr. Bruce Katz. Dr. Katz realized that by using fractional lasers, he could dramatically improve and reverse the aging process around the eyes without surgery, and with minimal to no downtime and few to no risks. Millions of patients have benefited from fractional laser treatments since its introduction and FDA clearance more than 14 years ago. Continual advances in technology and the use of these lasers now allow for a very viable, safe and effective alternative to conventional eyelid surgery. The Madonna Eye Lift procedure uses a fractional laser beam to break up damaged elastic fibers, creating microscopic channels where fresh new collagen develops. This process improves the tone, texture and appearance of the treated areas. The Madonna Eye Lift treatment addresses both texture and pigmentation, improving wrinkles, along with reducing dark circles under the eyes. A study that included over 300 patients showed consistent, satisfying results that included reduction of dark circles, elimination of eye wrinkles (crow’s feet), and tightening of the upper and lower eyelid skin. If you are experiencing any of the following issues, this procedure may be right for you: - Dark circles under the eyes - Wrinkles or “crow’s feet” around your eyes - Loose or excess eyelid skin (upper/lower eye) - Drooping or uneven eyebrows
This procedure can be done on almost anyone experiencing any of these symptoms regardless of their age, skin type or skin color. It is recommended that people with darker skin tones undergo a small “spot test” prior
to the procedure. Before the procedure is done, a topical numbing cream is applied to the treatment area. Once numb, the skin is then prepped, and metal eye shields are placed onto the eye to protect the cornea and retina. The actual procedure utilizes a laser machine that emits a beam that many people describe as “snappy or prickling” but not painful. The entire process takes approximately 20 minutes. Immediately post-procedure, the treated area will feel warm and appear slightly red or pink (like a mild sunburn). There can be some mild to moderate swelling, and as the skin cells rejuvenate, some mild flaking of the skin can be expected. Patients will require three to six sessions spaced apart approximately every two to three weeks. Most people start to notice significant results after their second treatment, with continued improvement up to six months following their last treatment. Clinical results are expected to last for several years. - Kelly Collins, NMD, is the owner and medical director of Premier Wellness AZ in Anthem.
