Red Mountain High School junior Heather Jensen dreamt about the day she would become one of the National Student Poets, the highest honor for youth poets presenting original work. In August it came to fruition when she and four other teens from around the United States traveled to Washington, D.C., to be officially appointed by Institute of Museum and Library Services Director Dr. Kathryn K. Matthew and Librarian of Congress Dr. Carla Hayden. “I don’t feel like it’s actually happening to me,” Heather said. “I’ve been in the poetry circles long enough to know

Mesa volunteers sew clothing for orphans worldwide classifieds

Every Wednesday at Apache Wells Community Church, Darlene Carpenter and a group of Mesa women cut, sew and press handmade dresses and shirts for children living in orphanages worldwide. Carpenter founded the nonprofit Dresses for Orphans in 2009 as a hobby with a small wish to give a few children a new piece of clothing. “Initially, I was just going to do this in my house,” Carpenter said. “I thought I could do about 20 or 30 dresses in a month, and then someone invited me to speak to a women’s group here in this church. I did that and invited anyone to join me at my house. Five people came, and that was the beginning.” Carpenter has always enjoyed sewing and helping children. She was inspired to blend those hobbies.
PROBLEM.
SOLUTION.
After creating the dress’ prototype, she reached out to a couple who worked with orphanages in India. They quickly expressed interest in the clothing, and weeks later, Carpenter sent her first batch of 100 shirts and dresses overseas. Since then, Dresses for Orphans has provided more than 41,000 free dresses and shirts to 114 orphanages in over 32 countries. On any given week in the summer, Carpenter can expect about 35 volunteers and, in the winter, up to 55. The volunteers, self-described as “very committed,” hail from various backgrounds, churches and communities throughout the Valley. Like Carpenter, they too expressed their excitement in helping children. “It is so meaningful,” said Jerri Ramey, a volunteer of seven years. “It

is a wonderful feeling to make these outfits for the boys and girls in these less fortunate areas. I look forward to each week to be able to donate my time to create smiles on these little boys’ and girls’ faces when these outfits arrive.” The group’s success is due in large part to Carpenter’s work. “She’s wonderful and very understanding in how she helps each of us,” said Gloria Bruce, a nine-year volunteer. “When I first came here, there were just a few people, and now look.” In fact, Carpenter’s work has inspired others to start small groups in Ohio and Minnesota. “I was one of the original volunteers,” said Molly Voita. “I’ve unretired, and now I’m starting a group in southwest Minnesota. Darlene ships us 100 T-shirts, and we do the whole thing in Renville, Minnesota. Then I ship them back here.” The boys’ shirts come in various colors ranging from gray to maroon and feature three appliqued hearts. The girls’ dresses are equally colorful and feature three hearts with prints ranging from stripes to flowers to floral designs. All of the clothing includes a small tag that declares, “Hearts ‘n’ hugs for kids… Jesus loves me!” The clothing is made from bulkpurchased shirts, while many of the applique designs are donated by quilters with extra pieces of fabric. The organization relies largely on monetary donations and spends part

of its time fundraising through garage sales, craft fairs and book sales. Additionally, it is also not unheard of for these women to help hearts closer to the Phoenix area. Since the group’s founding, it has sewn T-shirts for kids with leukemia at the Phoenix Children’s Hospital, pillowcases for women and children at the Changing Lives Center and goodie bags for homeless people. “Every now and then different projects come up throughout the year. We like to help, but of course, this is our main project,” Ramey said. “I love it here. It’s such a good mission and we have such a wonderful time together.” Many of the women echoed similar sentiments of feeling socially fulfilled by sewing dresses for orphans. “It’s such a blessing to come because you’re giving and you’re getting. Working with these women is also rewarding because several of them say, ‘Coming in on Wednesday is the highlight of my week,’” Carpenter shared. “As long as my health is with me, I will be here,” Ramey said. Dresses for Orphans welcome donations ranging from scraps of cotton fabric to money to an extra pair of hands. “There is room for everybody to make a difference,” Carpenter said. “If anybody out there has any interest at all there’s a place for everybody.” For more information, email Darlene Carpenter at darlene@ dressesfororphans.org. Mesa’s Fern Johnston to be a centenarian By Aliyah Chavez Fern Johnston sits surrounded by her daughter, two granddaughters and canine companion on a warm August afternoon in Mesa, vividly recalling many events during her soon-to-be 100 years. Johnston, born on September 19, 1918, in a small Iowa town, is the youngest of three children. Her mother, she recollected, was very loving and caring, while her father wasn’t a “choice” person, spending time as a “woman chaser.” During her childhood years, she spent time helping her mother wash dishes, round dancing and assisting her aunt, a hotel owner, during summer vacations. As a girl, Johnston seemingly lived a simple life, sharing small memories of learning how to drive and the inception of air conditioning. Then, in 1940, Johnston fell in love and married, marking the beginning of an important chapter in her life. “I think what I’m most grateful for in my life is I married a real good man. He
was good to me and that was special because I hadn’t been raised like that,” she said. Her late husband, Melvin B. Johnston – “Burdette,” as he was nicknamed – was the source of a lifetime of happiness. “We married on December 29, 1940, and just a few days later on January 13th, he left for Brownwood, Texas, to go to the Army,” she said. They spent most of their time apart as newlyweds. Being in the Army made it difficult to communicate with each other. While serving in several military bases in the United States and in eastern Germany, Johnston estimates during her husband’s five-year service, he was granted, at most, furlough for two months. This separation resulted in writing to one another on small note cards. “I wrote my husband every day, and he wrote to me every time he had a chance,” she said. “That was a time

when there were no telephone calls, no furloughs, no anything.” Years later, Burdette was successfully discharged from the Army, having fought in more than five major battles in World War II. “When he came back, that was the happiest day of my life,” she excitedly shared. After Burdette’s time in the Army, the couple spent time building a life together, which included living on a farm for 10 years, having two daughters and moving to Chicago. There, Johnston’s lifelong career stumbled onto her lap. “One afternoon I didn’t know what to do with my- Fern Johnston will be a centenarian on September 19. self after my kids started (Photo by Kimberly Carrillo) school because I had alAfter this, Johnston and Burdette ways worked and been so busy. Snow in Mesa This hot summer has some locals wondering, ‘Does it ever get cold in the Valley?’ Well, believe it or not, it has snowed a few times in the Phoenix area. The last measurable snowfall in the Phoenix area was December 1990, when 0.4 inches of snow was recorded. There have been scattered reports of light snow in Mesa in the past few years; however, it didn’t stick. The lowest recorded temperature in Phoenix was 16 degrees in January 1913. The record for most snow in the Valley was in January 1937. Phoenix recorded 1 inch of snow, while Mesa recorded 3 inches and a record low temperature of 21 degrees. The snow stayed on the ground for about a week. Schools closed, and many children took the opportunity to play in the snow. Snowmen popped up all around the city.
After the 1937 snowfall, students built a snowman at Lincoln School. (Photos courtesy Mesa Historical Museum)

I thought, ‘One day, if I’m good enough and I work really hard, I can become a National Student Poet.’” Other appointment events include public readings of the National Student Poets’ work and a private conversation with 22nd U.S. Poet Laureate Tracy K. Smith. To be considered for appointment as a National Student Poet, pupils must receive a National Medal from the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, the nearly century-old program known for its recognition and celebration of the country’s most creative teens. Throughout the year, the poets serve as literary ambassadors and share their passion for poetry and literacy with their communities and at libraries and museums throughout their regions. This is done through service projects, workshops and public readings. In addition, each poet receives a $5,000 academic award. Heather was excited when she received the news. “My mom got a call when I was in the car with my dad, my siblings and cousins headed to Snowflake,” she said. “My mom said someone from the Library of Congress called me and ‘Maybe you should call them back.’” Heather arrived at her relatives’ house in Snowflake, took in the rural setting, took a deep breath and called. “She said I was a National Student Poet and I said, ‘Are you sure?’ Now I’m employed by them to do service and try to make poetry available to people as a literary ambassador. I’m providing service within the Southwest region.” Heather, a former cellist who hopes to study neuroscience at Yale

or University of Pennsylvania, has been writing poetry since the seventh grade. “I wrote it because poetry is more emotionally clear than fiction writing,” she said. “Poetry is really succinct. I don’t have time to write full novels. I have 20 lines and there’s an emotional connection. I think poetry is more freeing than prose. I can mess with grammar and line breaks.” Besides writing poetry, Heather helps with freshman orientation, is on the National Honor Society, runs the poetry club and takes AP research class. This year, out of a pool of more than 23,000 works of poetry submitted to the awards, 35 semifinalists were invited to submit additional poetry and performance videos to distinguished jurors for final selection as National Student Poets. “IMLS is proud to support the National Student Poets Program and the work of these five talented students, who will visit local libraries, museums and schools as poetry ambassadors throughout the year,” Matthew said. “These young writers are bringing awareness to the many types of literacies as well as the essential services that museums and libraries provide their communities each and every day. Each of these poets serve as a shining example of how institutions across our nation can connect with their young people through selfdirected learning and offer spaces and opportunities for community expression.” For more information, visit artandwriting.org/NSPP.

and she wondered if she was merely asking for more trouble by filing a complaint, but did so anyway because she felt she was in the right. Norton told police she was so fearful that she would be arrested by police that “she called her husband, who is in Afghanistan, so that he could arrange for persons to take care of their home, their child and their pets since Elaine believed she was going to jail.’’ Two other hikers contacted Mesa police and told them that they had been confronted on the trail in a similar manner by Jaffa. The detective wrote that those incidents were reported too late and would not be considered for charges. Jaffa did not return a reporter’s call to his accounting office seeking comment, but he issued statements to at least two Phoenix television stations that covered the story. “Needless to say, I could have handled the situation with the hiker better. My actions were not the result of this one hiker, but all of the issues I have had to deal with over a period of months/years” related to the house’s construction, Jaffa wrote. In a statement, city spokesman Kevin Christopher said the cityowned trail was never on Jaffa’s property, but a portion had been moved in July to make it even further away from Jaffa’s land. He said Mesa is going to erect a fence as a barrier “that will clearly mark the property line for the city as well as the property owned by Jaffa.” Part of Jaffa’s contention was Norton left the new portion of the trail and used the older, closed portion, arguing that she had stepped on his property before he confronted her. But the police detective found that Norton violated no laws in leaving the new portion of the trail. While the city would prefer that she stay on the trail, he said she could walk anywhere she likes as long as it’s not on Jaffa’s land. Jaffa’s behavior stands in contrast with his public career as an accountant, a councilman and a member of several civic and charitable boards listed on his firm’s website. The Jaffa Simmons website said he served on the boards of such organizations as the Mesa Chamber of Commerce, the Mesa Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Child Crisis Center. September 2018

No escaping from fun or teamwork at ‘Escape Rooms’ By Kimberly Hosey I have been lost in a one-story, medium-sized building. I misplace my phone dozens of times a day, and can read an unfamiliar language more easily than a map. Also, I have a teenager. We communicate about as well as you would expect a teen and parent to communicate. We love each other, try our hardest, and often fail spectacularly. I share these facts because my son and I tried an escape room for the first time last month, and if we can have a great time, anyone can. Escape rooms are real-life puzzles: Participants are locked in a room with a team, and must solve a set of puzzles to break out before the time runs out. We decided to try our first adventure at Escape Rooms Mesa, 86 W. University Drive, Mesa. With locations in Mesa and Heber and another planned to open soon in Chandler, Escape Rooms is the largest facility of its kind in the United States. Themed rooms like “Mad Hatter’s Tea Party,” “Roswell 1947,” “Hansel and Gretel” and the historically accurate “Legend of the Lost Dutchman” offer something for everyone. The variety — 13 rooms and counting — sets the location apart. Rooms are designed with storylines and varying levels of difficulty, so newcomers and kids can have just as much fun as teams of escape room veterans. One of the newer rooms, “Zookeeper,” is geared especially toward younger adventurers. As a zoo volunteer left alone in an emergency with the zoo closing in an hour, players (ages 6 to 12) must solve clues to figure out how to care for each animal and avoid being locked in overnight. Rooms are designed for groups typically ranging from 4 to 10 players. Page 16
Two rooms are public — meaning if your group doesn’t fill the room, you might be joined by others — but the rest are private. The staff is prepared to cater to novices: After signing in, we were directed to a wall of locks to “practice.” In addition to the regular number padlocks; you might encounter letter padlocks, vertical and horizontal combination locks, directional locks, and locks that open with keys. We practiced with each one, and were happy we had done so when we encountered each of the locks in our room. Each participant should take advantage of the practice locks. You’ll be glad once you enter your room. And that’s almost all I can share — escapees (or those attempting) are sworn to secrecy. It’s part of the fun. I can share the basic premise of our room: “Captain’s Quarters,” the first room when the location opened in 2016. The room is geared toward those new to escape rooms and locks you in, well, the captain’s quarters. Our game master set the scene for us: We had been caught exploring an “abandoned” ship that wasn’t so abandoned. The crew locked us up, our guide explained, but we wanted to leave on our own terms — instead of walking the plank. We had one hour. And that was pretty much it. He left and locked the door. It took us a few seconds to get our bearings, but soon we were scanning high and low, walls and floor, behind and under everything; trying to find anything that looked like it might be a clue. Our escape plan centered on opening a series of locks, but the keys or combinations were found in different ways. If you try it, look for things like numbers, letters, or other details — and look everywhere. It’s a

puzzle-solving game, and clues were everywhere. We started getting the hang of it uncovering clues with a little help from our game master. A screen on the wall prominently displayed the minutes and seconds remaining until it was plank-walking time, and the same screen also served as a display: When we were particularly stuck, a helpful hint would appear. Finally, with one second left, we got the final key: the one to unlock our door and escape. We’re calling it a win. We loved that this was an active entertainment. My son said the sense of uncovering a mystery and revealing solutions reminded him of a “video game in real life,” which is a teenage endorsement if I’ve ever heard it. The immersive experience is also great way to sneak in some family bonding as well as a few lessons in communication, cooperation, and thinking outside the box. If you tell your kid to do something or enjoy themselves, you’re likely to get an

eye roll. Have someone else tell them they’d better work with you or you’ll stay locked in and will lose the game, and they trip over themselves to join in. If you’re looking for a unique activity to bring your family together, an escape room might just be the ticket. Kids are welcome in several of the rooms, in addition to the “Zookeeper” room especially for children. An adult (18 or older) must be in the room at all times, and if you’re bringing children under the age of 13 the facility requires booking a private room or an entire public room. Visit escaperoomsmesa.com to book a room. Bookings are typically for four or more participants; prices are $25 to $30 per person.

Student chronicles Compiled by Christina Fuoco-Karasinski Nathaniel Purtell of Mesa qualified for the dean’s list at Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey. Home to nearly 10,000 undergraduate and graduate students and offering more than 80 majors, Seton Hall has been singled out for distinction by The Princeton Review, U.S. News & World Report and Bloomberg BusinessWeek. Alexander Knopf of Mesa was named to the dean’s list at The University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is a student in the College of Engineering. Students who achieve at a high level academically are recognized by the dean at the close of each semester. To be eligible for the dean’s list, students must complete a minimum of 12 graded degree credits in that semester. Each university school or college sets its own GPA requirements for students to be eligible to receive the distinction. Kassandra Winchester of Mesa made the dean’s list at the University of New Haven in West Haven,
Connecticut. She is a student in the College of Arts and Sciences. She is working toward a Bachelor of Arts degree. The University of New Haven, founded on the Yale campus in 1920, is a private, coeducational university situated on the coast of southern New England. It’s a diverse and vibrant community of more than 7,000 students, with campuses around the country and around the world. Kaitlin Rosholm of Mesa was one of 182 seniors who participated in commencement exercises at Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri. Eight of them received diplomas in absentia. Rosholm majored in biology. Prior to the commencement exercises, graduates attended a baccalaureate service at the First Presbyterian Church of Fulton, Missouri, where the Rev. Parent University extends learning opportunities for the community By Laurie Struna Parent University participants enjoy connecting with other parents who have similar needs. (Photo by Tim Hacker)
Parent University at Mesa Public Schools gives families and community members the opportunity to further engage in learning. Since 1987, federal Title I funding has provided parent involvement activities to build partnerships between families, the community and local schools. From academic- and technology-driven classes such as math and online safety to social, emotional and behavioral support, Parent University has opportunities for all parents and caregivers. Most classes are offered free of charge.
Raising successful children Jan Umhay is a retired Mesa Public Schools employee. When her adult son needed guidance regarding typical toddler behaviors, she knew Parent University would be a great fit. “I believe in the program!” she said. As an active grandparent, Umhay said it’s important to stay neutral. It’s beneficial to have reinforcement from an outside source like Parent University where parents can learn how to help their children in a nonthreatening and supportive environment. “Children don’t come with owner’s manuals,” Umhay said. “So, for firsttime parents and grandparents, it’s comforting to know they aren’t alone and that they haven’t failed as parents while learning how to navigate child behaviors.”

Empowering parents and caregivers For 20 years, Christine Woo has worked as a substitute teacher for Mesa Public Schools. Parent University equips her with tools and information that empower her to be successful in the classroom. “I enjoy Parent University classes because all of the subject matter is relevant to my professional and personal life,” Woo shared. “While I substitute in all different grade-levels, I am partial to working with junior high school students. Parent University allows me to stay on top of my game.” Classes and workshops appeal to a large audience. Parents University continues to grow and evolve with parents’ changing needs. Diverse classes are taught by experts in their field. According to Parent University specialist Dr. Jessica Seaman, many new classes focus on boosting skills for parents of learners ages 0 to 5. Another wildly popular offering was a series of screenings of the documentary Screenagers: Growing Up in the Digital Age. “Nearly 700 parents and children participated in four screenings,” Seaman said. “This year, we are excited to add more self-paced online courses to accommodate our busy parents’ schedules.” For class schedules and more information at mpsaz.org/parentu. It’s a true family affair with sons Ryan, Wade and Jace chipping in as part of the 11-person staff. “The No. 1 thing people talk about is the cinnamon roll French toast,” he said. “We take the cinnamon roll, butterfly it and put it on the grill.

“When we started making that dish, we made cinnamon rolls to bake into French toasts. At one point, I was out of the French toast cinnamon rolls. I grabbed a few retail cinnamon rolls. I never frosted the other ones.” Geoffrey tried to scrape off the frosting. He did the best he could and put it on the grill. The frosting turned into a syrup. “Now we don’t make cinnamon rolls just for the French toast,” he said. “We use the same thing.” The couple, who married 26 years ago, is looking forward to seeing Bake It Like Buddy. “What Mel and I have together works,” Geoffrey said. “We finish each other’s sentences and have complementary skill sets. We don’t have egos about it. We just work really well together. “When we’re on set together, even in the midst of failure, we succeed. Everyone has mishaps and missteps in the kitchen. It’s really what happens when you have that failure that the true character comes out. I think that plays well on TV.”

Brown Sugar Fudge
I think I know where the saying, “Oh fudge!” came from. It was from someone trying to make fudge. Frustrating doesn’t even begin to describe the experience for so many of us who have tried and tried…. (and tried!) to hit on the perfect fudge recipe! Generally, with most recipes (excluding fudge) you try it and if it doesn’t turn out the way you want, you can tweak it the next time. Not with fudge. You make a recipe for fudge and it turns out perfectly. Then you make it exactly the same way the next time and it’s an epic fail. Oh fudge! So when I came across this recipe for Brown Sugar Fudge, the caption captivated me: “Lush, velvety texture.” The first batch produced the most magnificent flavor but the texture was too grainy. Reviewing the process, I realized I probably didn’t stir the mixture enough to completely dissolve the sugars. Also, I may not have stirred as vigorously or as long
Brown Sugar Fudge Ingredients: - 2 cups light brown sugar - 1 cup granulated sugar - 2 tablespoons light corn syrup - 1 cup heavy cream - 1/2 teaspoon salt - 2 tablespoons unsalted butter - 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla - 1/2 cup pecans, chopped (optional) Directions: Step #1 Butter an 8-inch square baking pan. Step #2 In a medium saucepan, combine brown sugar, granulated sugar, corn syrup, heavy cream, and salt. Heat

I should have when the mixture had cooled. So for the second go around, I corrected those steps. It was so much better! It yielded the same fantastic flavor with a creamier texture but not as “lush or velvety” as I wanted. So, I had to do it. I had to give it one more go. Before I give you the results of the final batch, I want you to know that in order for me to commit to giving any recipe three tries, it has to fit my criteria: First, I have to believe the recipe will be worth your while, since I’m writing this column for you. Second, the recipe has to be simple with inexpensive ingredients. Well, the third time for me was not a charm. It had that same great taste, but I never got the rich and creamy texture I was hoping for. Not being a fudge aficionado, it could be that this texture is right for this recipe. The flavor makes it worth a try. Ready to fudge? on medium, stirring to dissolve the sugar. Step #3 Insert candy thermometer and cook until mixture reaches 238 degrees (soft ball stage). Step #4 Add butter and stir until melted and fully incorporated. Remove pan from heat and let mixture stand undisturbed until mixture cools to lukewarm (about 115 degrees). Step #5 Add vanilla and beat vigorously with a wooden spoon until smooth and creamy. Fold in optional pecans. Step #6 Pour into prepared pan and let harden. Cut into squares. Store in an air-tight container.

Luma: Art in Darkness shows the importance the dark plays in life. (Photo courtesy Mesa Arts Center)
A splash of light will be shed at the Mesa Arts Center this month when Luma: Art in Darkness makes its Arizona debut. The show features a cast of fire dancers, baton twirlers and a guest soloist juggler who returns to work with Luma after departing to join Cirque du Soleil. Luma has evolved during its 22 years and with this show, audiences can expect a variety of discipline, light and Luma’s first public performance involving fire. “Our fascination for light never dies,” said Michael Marlin, whose wonderment of light in the dark led to his creation of Luma. Marlin said the show’s message has always remained: We are losing our night skies and access to see the stars because of so much light. We forget the importance the dark plays. Marlin’s passion brought him to a partnership with Lumican, a Canadian startup determined to provide light while the night sky can still be seen. The energy-efficient LEDs provide a wide amber glow without shielding the stars from sight or harming the human eye. A week prior to Luma’s show, Lumican will install dark sky fixtures in the Mesa Arts Center plaza. Others have taken part in the

preservation of the night sky. Tucson is home of the International Dark Sky Association, an organization that stresses dark sky education and enforcement of quality outdoor lighting ordinance to set an example for neighboring communities. Flagstaff enacted the world’s first outdoor lighting ordinance in 1958. When Marlin founded Luma in 1996, he had every intention to bring awareness to the loss of night sky. He said the show has had such an impact that fans have driven hours to see it. Some have even relayed to him their memory of the show’s birth in Madison, Wisconsin. “I’ve been working almost half my life to try and make a difference in the world to bring the heavens back into people’s lives so they can see the stars. That’s something I didn’t know was possible.”

Penn & Teller have brought their magic to stages around the world for more than 40 years.
By Heather Copfer Penn & Teller, the longest-running Las Vegas headliners, love to mix comedy and magic into their show. Penn Jillette knows performances like the October gig at the Mesa Arts Center will leave fans speechless. “What they’ll be seeing is a live show with things they cannot and will not be able to explain,” said Jillette during a recent phone interview. During performances, Raymond Teller leaves the speaking to Jillette. That formula has carried on throughout their career, which these days calls for 250 shows in Vegas and other loca-

tions Thursdays and Fridays. They also have a show on the CW Television Network, Penn & Teller: Fool Us, which premiered in 2011. Magicians attempt to fool the two for a chance to win a trip to Las Vegas and perform as an opening act in Penn & Teller’s show at the Rio Hotel & Casino. The pair rarely take a break from performing. Recently, however, Teller had spinal fusion surgery. Originally, they planned a midJuly hiatus, but during a June performance at Beau Rivage in Biloxi, Mississippi, Teller’s back thought otherwise. “It’s the longest time since I was 12, I have not gone more than five days without doing a show in my life,” Jillette said. During the five-week break, Jillette stuck to a water-only fast followed by a limited food diet to improve his blood pressure. The duo returned to the Vegas stage

on August 18. When the duo return to Arizona, Jillette will stick to his routine of 43 years. He gets up in the morning, grabs Starbucks, goes to soundcheck, eats backstage and then he’s on stage. “When I’m on stage I’m very, very aware of the audience in that particular show and I’m doing the thing that makes me happiest in the world.” He then concludes, chuckling, “but I have no idea where I am.”

Williams said. “We need to get more women paddleboarding. It’s too intimidating to strap boards on the car and go out by themselves. I decided to start these classes to show women they can do it.” As for goat yoga, she founded Goat Yoga Arizona two years ago with April Gould, who hosts the classes at her Welcome Home Ranch in Gilbert. She sees it as a way to continue teaching when the pools are closed for the summer. “It’s hilarious,” Williams said. “When we started out, we didn’t think it would be a tourism thing, but half of every class is tourists.” The fitness trend has been getting a lot of attention. Recently, Goat Yoga Arizona was featured on TV shows Ozzy & Jack’s World Detour with rocker Ozzy Osbourne and his son Jack Osbourne, and The Amazing Race. The goats climb on and go under yoga class participants. “It’s totally legit,” Williams explained. About 30 goats take part in classes. “We just keep making in weirder. We’ve added two alpacas and once a month we have cow cuddling where we bring in a dairy cow.” The more animals Williams and Gould add to the mix, the more exCanadian tourists take part in Goat Yoga Arizona at Welcome cited people get. Amazon Flex works for Northeast Mesa dad By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski Dustin Dial and his wife, Irving Elementary School teacher Nina Carrillo, found it difficult to balance their careers and children, and Dial’s music studies at community college. So, Dial took a chance. The 2002 Mountain View High School graduate quit his job and started working with Amazon Flex, a program that lets individuals be their own boss, set their own schedules and make money while delivering for Amazon. Amazon Flex, which pays $18 to $25 per hour, does not offer pension or benefits, workers are not guaranteed a certain number of hours. Details are available at flex. amazon.com. The schedule and program work for Dial, however. It allows him to continue supporting his family, without compromising his personal dreams. For the past year and a half, he’s juggled his classes, after-school pickup and family time.
“I am studying music theory and guitar, but everything was put on hold because my wife and I started having kids,” he said. “It’s a little hard to focus on school. I had to focus more on my family. “It allows me to focus on a lot of things in life without making it overly complicated,” Dial said. “I’ve done a lot of things and had full-time jobs before. My last job was demanding. I had to work six days a week, although I was paid overtime.” He takes his kids to elementary school in the morning and then works throughout the day. Dial picks up his children from school and by the time he gets home, Carrillo is home and he takes his online or in-person classes. “I can make money on my own time,” he said. “I create my own daily routine and still make money to provide for my family. That’s what I really like about it.”

East Mesa Real Estate Update It’s a good time to buy or sell in our neighborhood By Alejandro Rojas Although some markets in the Phoenix area are going wild and prices are climbing steadily, things move a bit slower out here in east Mesa. Home values are not increasing as quickly, but sellers are getting closer to what they are asking. The number of homes available for sale has also dropped a bit, and with increased interest rates on the horizon, it is best to buy sooner rather than later. If you want to snatch up a home closer to the city, you need an agent that is on their toes. Prices are rising, and homes are going fast. There are also not many homes available in some neighborhoods. However, in East Mesa home buying and selling is not so frantic. Home values are not increasing as quickly as they are closer to the city, but they are up. January to April saw an average home sale increase of about $40,000, but prices have remained steady over the summer. Although home values have not increased in the last few months, sellers are receiving closer to what they are asking. In January home sellers were getting on average just above 96 percent of what they were asking. That has increased to slightly under 98 percent in June. This increase is likely because inventory is low. This means that although it is hot out, it is still an excellent time to list your home. Although home values have plateaued, the lack of homes on the market makes your home more desirable. As for buyers in east Mesa, it is also a good time for you to be in the
d a n I’m a I’m also a salesperson in print. I talk to about, oh, 30,000 prospective customers every month. Alejandro Rojas. (Special to Nearby News)
market. With home values remaining where they are, it might be good to snatch something up before prices increase. They are more likely to increase than decrease. The real estate market slows down in October going into the holidays and then spikes in January. However, there is another consideration for buyers, and that is interest rates. The higher your interest rates, the less of a home you can afford. More of that loan is being taken up for interest, and there is a roof to how much you can afford. So, you get more home for your loan with lower interest. Home prices plateauing, for now, and interest rates remaining low, for now, makes this an excellent time to purchase a home. I am reminded of two of my favorite sayings, “There is no time like the present,” and one of my mother’s favorites, “You snooze, you lose.” Contact me if you have questions or would like help.
