Nsengimana spent his early years growing up in Rwanda during the ’90s.

Constantly on the move trying to escape genocide, Nsengimana lost many family members and ended up in an orphanage.

While he was at the orphanage, Samaritan’s Purse brought aid to those in need. When Samaritan’s Purse reached the orphanage, it had been supporting Rwanda

“My brother and I, we would run from place to place, from family to family,” said Nsengimana, who visited the Valley to speak about Samaritan’s Purse. “At the end of the genocide, after losing the people that really cared and who were taking care of us at that time, we were put in an orphanage by my aunt.”

He picked up soccer to avoid that, and he quickly learned he had a natural talent for it. Around the age of 10, during a normal soccer session at a park, he met his future father figure and mentor, Peter Duah, a soccer coach from Ghana. Duah asked him to play for him on a team, which proved to be the launching pad for his career.

When Lopez was 26, he followed Duah’s advice of achieving something more in life. He realized that he wanted to help people and the community, so he contacted the Phoenix Police Department. He passed an open written test in Downtown Phoenix.

“It just came naturally. To me, law enforcement just made sense. The law itself, the language of law, it just made sense to me for some reason, and it just clicked,” Lopez said.

Even though Lopez wasn’t sold on the idea of being a police officer, he went through with the hiring process. He graduated from the Phoenix Regional Police Academy in 1994.

“He became that sort of mentor or father figure,” Lopez said. “When I wasn’t acting appropriate, he scolded and disciplined me. He made sure that I stayed on the straight and narrow. He always said, ‘There’s something about you. You’re going to play professional soccer, and you’re going to make it because you have what it takes. But there’s something bigger for you. I can tell there’s something bigger that’s going to happen in your life. I don’t know what that is, but it’s out there.’”

Poor Igor Shpudejko on Sept. 7 also suggests the way to solve these issues is to support Donald Trump and his MAGA disciples, because, well, liberals are bad. When Biden suggested that the MAGA maniacs arming themselves to put Trump back in power had better realize that “you need F-15s to take on the gov ernment,” Igor wonders if F-15 pilots are being trained to bomb Americans?

Some might say the proposed Liber ty Elementary School District No. 25 budget override election is simply about dollars and cents being directed toward the health and development of vital pro grams and the retention of quality teach ers. It is that and so much more. This election boils down to what’s worth growing and what’s worth protecting. The answer is the legacy of Liberty.

The WVV letter from Susan Hewitt of Sept. 7 asks why do liberals “gin up a Jan. 6 crisis and manufacture the recent unlawful raids at Mar-a-La go”? Maybe it’s because thousands of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol with the intent to overthrow our gov ernment at his direction. (BTW, how many supporters flying Biden flags were in that mob?)

I am a bottom-line kind of person; always have been. Let’s just look at the cold, hard facts about Jan. 6.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Why has the West Valley View be come such a beacon for liberal and progressive hate? Week after week, in the Letters to the Editor section, pro gressives are ridiculed as hating Amer ica, relishing power, intolerant, craving domination, unpatriotic, George Soros acolytes and willing to “gin up crisis after crisis” to demean Donald Trump.

fort zone and spend some time talking to people who don’t share our view of the world. Realize that we are in this to gether, not just as Democrats or Repub licans, but Americans. Nobody hates America! Differences in political views are normal, but they shouldn’t be toxic. We are all parents, grandparents, broth ers, sisters, veterans, retired, blue collar or white collar. We are all American citizens hoping for a better way of life. Why not accentuate the things we have in common, not the things we differ on?

I love this league and I deeply respect our leadership. But this isn’t right. There is no place for misogyny, sexism and rac ism in any workplace.”

Still, it was hard not to pull for this iter ation of the Suns squad, led — ironically, given the accusations of racism — by two incredibly talented African American ex ecutives, head coach Monty Williams and general manager James Jones.

This leaves every Suns fan with a choice to make, a decision I find most curious at a moment when every aspect of life, from dining at Chick-fil-A to grabbing java at Starbucks, has become a time for choosing.

For two years running, this team has played beautiful basketball. They are un selfish, united, collaborative and a group that holds one another accountable. In other words, the team on the floor has been everything their owner is not off it.

For me, I long ago made the decision not to put another thin dime in Sarv er’s pocket, walking away from season tickets rather than supporting the man’s reign of error.

I certainly respect your right to choose otherwise. I even understand it to a de gree. Bleeding orange and purple is tough to get over, and quitting Sarver also means quitting solid human beings like Williams and Devin Booker. It’s hard to blame an employee for the con duct of a business owner. It also makes you wonder how long players like Paul and Booker will want to toil in Sarver’s employ, and whether they will remain “all in” to pursue the Suns’ elusive first championshipAllofushave worked for a tyrant at some point. Another challenge related to growth is its impact on our classrooms and campuses. The rapid growth of the area, plus our stellar academics, has contributed to having highly desirable schools that families are clamoring to getOurinto.high schools were built for ap proximately 1,600 to 1,700 students. Increased enrollment has pushed our schools to nearly 2,000 students. This has required us to convert office space, theater rooms and auditoriums into small classrooms; remove landscaping to create additional parking spaces; and adjust students’ schedules to try and re duce long lines in the lunchroom. Our hardworking and talented lead ers are problem solving every day to find ways to continue to make things work. Bond dollars will allow us to ad dress overcrowding by providing the funding we need to build additional classrooms on existing campuses and eventually build a much-needed new highPlus, school.itwill enable us to make es sential investments in infrastructure

Mark’s Message

Board has called for an election this November. The community will have the opportunity to vote on the no-taxincrease override continuation and notax-increase bond to support our local high schools. To help you understand the importance of the ballot measures, please allow me to share with you the challenges we face as a district due to the rapid growth.

Welcome to the 2022-23 school year.

The administrative staff and teachers at our fam ily of high schools — Agua Fria, Canyon View, Desert Edge, Millenni um and Verrado — have been working throughout the summer to prepare for another successful year. Based on enrollment data, this year is shaping up to be one of hypergrowth. On the first day of the school year, all

five of our high schools were over their Districtwide, capacity.we welcomed 9,838 students. That’s an in crease of more than 600 stu dents from last year and 1,100 from the previous year. The skyrocketing student enroll ment not only impacts class sizes but also amplifies the need for more resources dedi cated to safety and security, not to mention its impact on such things as staff and student parking, food service and the need for more staff.

What keeps me awake at night is the safety and security of our schools. Sad ly, horrific stories of school violence are becoming all too common. We are extremely fortunate to have a school resource officer on each of our campus es. However, the incidents of violence are getting closer to home, happening in communities across Arizona.

As our bustling high school cam puses become more populated, it is essential to maintain safe learning environments. With bond funds, we will upgrade our security systems and technology to keep our campus es safe. With override dollars, we can hire more safety personnel. Both the override and bond funding are needed to help us continue to focus on school safety and security.
