Over time, I seem to have shifted away from doing things that will likely deliver more such nonsense: scrolling social media, watching or reading the news, going to Fourth of July barbecue picnics, striking up a conversation in line at Bashas’.

Effective neuropathy treatment relies on the following three factors:

It’s a story about missing the days before all the bull, back when the news, actually real, was the only form of “reality TV.”

BY DAVID LEIBOWITZ

Instead, I try to hit golf balls on all the days of the week that end in the letter -y. The sand shot rises out of the bunker and nestles beside the hole — or you skull it over a condo. Your putt spins around the hole and falls out. You tap in and add two strokes to your score. There’s a truth to the game that no longer seems to exist in so much of what we call life.

PERIPHERALWARNING!NEUROPATHY AND CHRONIC PAIN TREATMENTS NOT WORKING!!

Arrowhead Physical Medicine in Tucson, AZ uses a state-of-the-art electric cell signaling systems worth $100,000.00. Th is groundbreaking treatment is engineered to achieve the following, accompanied by advanced diagnostics and a basic skin biopsy to accurately analyze results:

1. Finding the underlying cause 2. Determining the extent of the nerve damage (above 95% nerve loss is rarely treatable)

Leibo At Large Golf is a game of simple truth

Let me begin by saying that this is not a column about golf, though it begins with a story involving golf. Or, to be speci c, a thought about golf. I was catching up with a buddy from high school, lamenting the state of mankind: politics, the workplace, gender relations, sports. Our friendship spans four decades, so we had a lot of complaining to do. We also share a golf addiction, so naturally the game was a topic.

Nongolfers, far more sane than actual golfers, having not subjected themselves to torturous years of chasing a dimpled white ball over hills, through deserts, into lakes and bushes, behind trees, and occasionally into holes in the ground, often ask golfers, “What the hell do you see in the game? It looks miserable.”

Back when the phrase “Hey, guys” wasn’t grounds for a complaint to human resources. And back when someone could write “these truths are self-evident” and inspire a revolution, not a food ght on three di erent TV networks with two politicalAndslants.now, friends, back to the bull.

4 | SEPTEMBER 2022 www.LovinLife.com Opinion

1. Increases blood flow 2. Stimulates and strengthens small fiber nerves 3. Improves brain-based pain The treatment works by delivering energy to the affected area(s) at varying wavelengths, from low- to middle-frequency signals, while also using Amplitude Modulated (AM) and Frequency Modulated (FM) signaling It’s completely painless!

Like I said, this isn’t a story about golf.

3. The amount of treatment required for the patient’s unique condition

THE GREAT NEWS IS THAT THIS TREATMENT IS COVERED BY MEDICARE, MEDICAID, AND INSURANCES!!MOST Depending on your coverage, your peripheral neuropathy treatment could cost almost nothing – or be absolutely free. The number of treatments required varies from patient to patient, and can only be determined following an in-depth neurological and vascular examination. As long as you have less than 95% nerve damage, there is hope! Arrowhead Physical Medicine begins by analyzing the extent of the nerve damage – a complimentary service for your friends and family. Each exam comprises a detailed sensory evaluation, extensive peripheral vascular testing, and comprehensive analysis of neuropathy findings. I’ve never had the perfect answer, until that talk. I haven’t experienced many epiphanies, but this was one. Golf is loveable for the exactly the same reason so many of us detest everything else, from MAGA loons vs. progressive scolds, the latest episode of “Love Island,” Hollywood preaching, In ation Reduction Acts that won’t reduce in ation, election controversies, Supreme Court controversies, and even the PGA Tour vs. LIV Golf controversy.Playinggolf involves zero bull. Unlike virtually everything else in the 21st century. You swing, you hit the ball, you count a stroke. Tally the strokes, that’s your score. The ball goes in the hole or not. End of debate.Which is why after hours spent drenched in controversy, consuming, managing or writing about the news, it feels liberating to stand on a 108-degree golf course facing a 103-yard shot from the fairway to the ag. You swipe at the ball with a wedge. It comes to rest — somewhere. That’s one stroke. Unlike, say, casting your election ballot. Which may be a vote or may not, depending on which political party you’re in and whether your preferred candidate wins the election. Or wishing a barista “good morning,” which risks using the wrong pronoun and creating a controversy where you only meant to be kind. Or deciding whether or not to pay an exorbitant sum to see Bruce Springsteen, because being ripped o by the voice of the working man would still get you in to hear “Born to Run” live — a bucket list item — but also subject you to a lengthy political rant, which you would absolutely le under B. Not for Bruce or for Boss. But under B for “more bull.”

Tucson, AZ – When it comes to chronic pain and/ or neuropathy, the most common doctor-prescribed treatment is drugs like Gabapentin, Lyrica, Cymbalta, and Neurontin. The problem with antidepressants or anti-seizure medications like these is that they offer purely symptomatic relief, as opposed to targeting and treating the root of the problem. Worse, these drugs often trigger an onset of uncomfortable, painful, and sometimes harmful side Theeffects.only way to effectively treat chronic pain and/or peripheral neuropathy is by targeting the source, which is the result of nerve damage owing to inadequate blood flow to the nerves in the hands and feet. This often causes weakness, numbness, balance problems. A lack of nutrients causes the nerves degenerate – an insidious As displayed in figure 1 above, the nerves are surrounded by diseased, withered blood vessels. A lack of sufficient nutrients means the nerves cannot survive, and thus, slowly die. This leads to those painful and frustrating consequences we were talking about earlier, like weakness, numbness, tingling, balance issues, and perhaps even a burning sensation. The drugs your doctor might prescribe will temporarily conceal the problems, putting a “Band-Aid” over a situation that will only continue to deteriorate without further Thankfully, action.

Tucson is the birthplace of a brand-new facility that sheds new light on this pressing problem of peripheral neuropathy and chronic pain. The company is trailblazing the medical industry by replacing outdated drugs and symptomatic reprieves with an advanced machine that targets the root of the problem at hand.

However, when we stop to observe our thoughts, we nd that most of the time, these are actually untruths — a habitual story we tell ourselves — but when we challenge it, we can start to develop better patterns of thought and habit. I write about this in my latest book, “Tell Yourself a Better Lie.”

So instead of honing in on what you perceive as unattractive, take some time and focus on parts of your body and features you like most. Silence that inner critic and call on your inner cheerleader — who tells you that you are beautiful, shouts about how strong and amazing you are, and how that has re ected out

It’s also a good sign that you already seem to have clear lines of communication with one another — which is so important when building a healthy, happy relationship. If you feel comfortable and haven’t already, why not tell your partner about how you are anxious about moving to a physical relationship. You say that he tells you that he nds you desirable but that you don’t have that belief in yourself, so here’s what we need to work on! When you’re next looking in the mirror, take a moment to notice your thoughts — what is that little voice inside your head saying to you? For example, if you are looking in the mirror and it’s saying you are old and ugly — ask yourself, is that fact or ction? (It’s always the latter.)

MissyMarisaShy needs to get her mojo back

But it’s these stories we tell ourselves each day that hugely impact our lives, beliefs and con dence.

Q

Dear Missy Shy, I am delighted to hear that your dating experience has been a good one! Clearly, you took the time to work on yourself and are in a great place to begin a new relationship now. After ve years of being single, of course, it’s going to be an adjustment being with someone again, and you are likely to be apprehensive at rst — but your new partner is being supportive and isn’t pressuring you, which is great to hear.

BY MARISA PEER

I’m not overweight, but just very conscious of how my body looks, particularly as I haven’t been with someone sexually for so long. My new partner tells me all the time that I am beautiful and he nds me sexy, but when I look in the mirror all I see is an average looking middle-aged woman looking back. It’s crazy because I would describe myself as a con dent woman, but when it comes to seeing myself as a sexual being again, I am struggling to get my mojo back! Please help, Marisa! Missy Shy Mesa

Dear Marisa: After ve years being single, I am in such a good place and recently decided to start dating again as while I am perfectly happy on my own, I would love someone to share my time with. At rst I was worried it would be a bit of a mine eld at my age (I’m 56), but I have met the most wonderful man who makes me feel alive and like I’m 25 again! We have so much in common and have been on several dates now. While we are taking things slowly, I can really see myself with him long term and we have agreed that we are now exclusive. I couldn’t be happier, but now that we have agreed we are committed to only dating each other, I have started to get panicked about progressing our relationship to the next level — because while we have kissed and cuddled, we haven’t been intimate yet. We are really open with each other — which is so refreshing — and have discussed this. He has reassured me that there’s no rush and he is happy to just go with the ow when I’m ready, but I feel so stressed out, because while I want to be physical with him, I am so self-conscious about my body and terri ed of getting naked in front of him.

“They (restaurants) were so popular within hotels that they thought they would open their own hotel. That’s how the brand and hotel were born. We thought, ‘Let’s give guests what they want.’ They like the experience. It’s very minimalistic. We don’t use tablecloths. We’re about quality. Everything is high quality. Our team doesn’t even wear nametags. We are not the focus. Our guests are the focus.”

The pairing of the two landmark brands has made the property a success.

“I thought we really had something,” she says. “It has the social justice message. It’s current. It’s about the societal problems we all have. Why are we still making the same mistakes over and over again.” She played songs for Slick, and she was moved by it. “She said, ‘This is great,’” she recalls. “‘This sounds like Jefferson Airplane. It could be old. It could be new.’ I told her we were working on a new record and maybe she could help us write. She sent a few pages of lyrics, which turned into ‘It’s About“We’reTime.’the new guard. We want to play new songs but touch on where we came from.”

“When Paul was in the band, we didn’t do anything past 1979 in the show,” she says.“Iwasn’t as familiar with all the Jefferson Airplane stuff.

In June 1984, Kantner, the last remaining member, left the band over artistic differences.Laterthat year, Kantner sued, claiming he was owed money and to prevent the remaining members from using the name Jefferson Starship. The following March it was settled, with Kantner receiving money, but the name Jefferson Starship became the property of Slick (51%) and Bill Thompson (49%). All involved agreed to not use the name “Jefferson” going forward. That’s when just Starship was born with Slick, who left in 1988. She joined Kantner’s reformed Jefferson Airplane for an album and tour in Kantner1989. dubbed the band Jefferson Starship: The Next Generation in January 1992. After Kantner died in 2016, his iteration folded the 1980s hits into the set.

Out of those sessions came the roots of “Mother of the Sun.”

Jefferson Starship covers the past, nods to the future

BY CHRISTINA FUOCO-KARASINSKI

When Cathy Richardson was growing up in Burr Ridge, Illinois, one of her favorite bands was Jefferson Starship. Now she’s fronting the act, anchoring the role made famous by Grace Slick.

“Never in a million years did I dream that I’d be in the band,” Richardson says. This incarnation of Jefferson Starship will visit the Fox Tucson Theatre on Saturday, September 17. A singer/guitarist, Richardson will be joined by original member David Freiberg, drummer Donny Baldwin (whose Jefferson Starship roots go back to 1982), keyboardist Chris Smith (who joined in 1998) and guitarist Jude Gold (who jumped on board in 2012). Richardson joined in 2008 after founding member Paul Kantner saw her perform with Big Brother and the Holding Company. Playing Joplin came naturally. She starred in “Love, Janis” in Tucson and Phoenix in 2006/2007. When Kantner recruited her for Jefferson Starship, he handed her a stack of songs to “brush up on.” They were whittled down to 20 or 30, for which Richardson printed the lyrics and put them in a book. The songs were from the early years of Jefferson Airplane.

3. GET TO KNOW THE COMMUNITY. Whether you are taking a tour virtually or in person, you can begin to get a feel for a community’s amenities, services and safeguards. But it’s more than simply choosing a floorplan and supportive services—it’s also about lifestyle. Ask about a community’s fitness, art classes or other interests you may enjoy—or about the community’s wellness programs. A retirement community can offer the peace of mind that there is an “extended family” to help provide support and lifestyle options.

2. DETERMINE WHICH TYPE OF SENIOR LIVING COMMUNITY WILL BEST FIT YOUR NEEDS . It’s important to understand the different types of senior living options and types of services & care they offer. From continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs) which require large, upfront entrance fees to “rental” communities, which offer similar services with the flexibility of a monthly fee—there is a community to fit every budget and lifestyle. Begin with a list of your preferences and needs and compare potential communities by taking into account location, specific care services, and additional onsite services such as physical therapy, amenities and activities.

4. DOES A RETIREMENT COMMUNITY MAKE SENSE FINANCIALLY? When compared to the monthly expenses, delivery services, transportation costs, meal expenditures, and the upkeep of a house, many seniors have found that they actually spend less per month and gain countless additional benefits by moving to a retirement community. Take a few moments to compute what it actually costs you to live in your home and compare your present costs to the senior living community. Many communities offer a “Compare the Value Checklist” for your convenience.

1. BEGIN RESEARCHING IN ADVANCE—BEFORE THE NEED ARISES. A good place to start is to ask family, friends and valued advisors for their recommendations and help with researching retirement communities. Waiting until the need arises can often result in hastier or short-term decisions that might fail to meet your long-term needs.

Now more than ever, retirement living offers residents value, services and safeguards in a supportive setting.

Where do you start and what should you look for?

5. ARE THE COMMUNITY’S SUPPORTIVE CARE SERVICES ACCREDITED? You can learn a lot with a personalized community tour, but how do you measure the quality behind the scenes? The Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) is an independent non-profit organization that accredits providers of senior services. Accreditation provides you the assurance that high standards of quality care, service & safeguards are maintained. Make sure your selected community not only offers access to licensed supportive care and services, but is also CARF accredited.

Led Zeppelin fans who want to check out Get the Led Out should not expect the musicians to look like the classic rock legends. They won’t improvise either. Get the Led Out plays the recorded versions of Led Zeppelin songs.

Recently, Get the Led Out honored a fan who saw the act 100 times by learning and playing “I’m Gonna Crawl.”

Sinclair loves his job as much as fans adore his band. “I won’t be able to express how much joy I get from doing this,” he says. “When I was a kid watching the Monkees, I wanted to be Davy Jones. I would live a fun life, have pretty girls, travel with friends and stay up late. That’s the life I wanted to lead. I never thought I’d be in a Led Zeppelin tribute band in my 50s, but, by God, it’s the greatest thing.”

BY CHRISTINA FUOCO-KARASINSKI

“People can’t get enough of it still. Why not just replicate what people already know and love?” Get the Led Out will do just that at the Fox Tucson Theatre at 7 p.m. Sunday, September 25. With Get the Led Out, each show is different, as the band wants to respect those who attend multiple gigs.

There is anywhere from 10 to 14 different songs from one night to the next. Zeppelin has a massive catalog.“Itencourages people to come. Fans follow us like the (Grateful) Dead.”

“I love classic rock,” singer Paul Sinclair says. “We’ve heard the album versions a zillion times. Everybody knows those versions and every nuance of Robert Plant’s vocals and the drum fills.

“We have performed 67 of them in concert. There are only six we haven’t performed yet because we haven’t worked them up. We have this one fan who keeps asking for ‘Hats Off to Roy Harper,’ but he’s the only person who’s asked for this in 19 years. It’s more of a sound effects kind of piece. I’d like to get all these songs under my belt before leaving planet Earth.”

“From their albums, there are 73 songs,” he says about Led Zeppelin.

After a decade in business, Polish Cot tage has a fresh look, daily specials and a revamped drink menu. The cozy midtown restaurant closed for part of July for a facelift and additions to its drink menu, to install booths, a bar and new wood flooring. The restaurant re opened July 26 with a bit more capacity, from 48 to 52. The brighter color scheme and new lighting also have resulted in a more bright and open space.

What’s Cooking? Ice

Ice cream in any shape, flavor or form is always on my list of favorite summer treats. And if you want to create a cone with a real Southwest twist, how about a homemade, handcrafted ice cream cone that tastes just like a Mexican churro and holds as much ice cream as the cone you are willing to create! While homemade churros are pretty tough to tackle (churro dough is very dense and sticky), this cone is made with store-bought biscuit dough, making the process a whole lot easier. The dough is wrapped around a homemade paper mold. It is then baked, rolled in cinnamon and sugar, baked again and coated on the inside with dipping chocolate, which seals it, preventing a soggy cone. Load it up with scoops of your favorite ice cream for a cool and festive way to celebrate summer, Southwest style!

Offers a Brighter Outlook on Retirement!

When Marcy and Lyle were young, they didn’t think about their retirement. But by the time they had babies graduating from high school and going off to college, they had plans for their “golden years.” They couldn’t wait to sit back and relax and enjoy the fruits of their labor. But they couldn’t plan for everything. Unexpected events, unavoidable tragedies, and opportunities that ended up involving more risk than they did reward left Marcy and Lyle repeatedly dipping into their retirement funds until they were far short of their goal. In fact, they were looking at spending their golden years on an extremely tight budget. Luckily, their good friend Jim was retiring early and dropped by to share his excitement. And in doing so, he told them exactly what they needed to hear.

INGREDIENTS: 1 16.3-ounce package biscuit dough (Grand’s or larger biscuits work best) • 1/4 cup flour 1/2 cup granulated sugar 2 teaspoons cinnamon 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted 1 cup dipping chocolate or chocolate ice cream Candy sprinkles

INSTRUCTIONS: Place oven rack in the bottom third of the oven, removing the rack above the one you will be using. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Take the sheet of paper and roll into a tight cone, securing the end with a piece of tape. Trim the wide end of the cone straight across so it will stand upright on a baking sheet. Wrap cone tightly with foil (on the inside, too), completely covering the paper. Lightly spray with cooking oil and set aside. Repeat with remaining sheets of paper. Dust work surface with flour. Using a rolling pin, roll out the biscuit dough to a 1/4-inch-thick piece of dough large enough to wrap around the cone mold. Wet your fingertips with water and press and seal dough around mold. Place the cone, base side down, on a lightly greased baking sheet. Bake for about 12 minutes or until cone is golden brown.

In a small bowl, mix together cinnamon and sugar. Remove the cones from the oven and brush the outside with melted butter. Sprinkle cones evenly with cinnamon sugar and return to the oven, baking for an additional 3 minutes.Remove the cones from the oven and let cool. While the cones are cooling, melt chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl in 30-second intervals until spreadable. When the cone is cool enough to handle, remove it from the mold. Pour chocolate into the cone and coat all the way around, pouring out any excess. Let the chocolate harden. Fill the cone with a scoop of your favorite ice cream and D’ATRI

Gloria P. of Tucson AZ worked overtime as a nurse to help people get through the pandemic. The consistent overuse on the computer caused Gloria's right hand and arm to experience numbness and burning pain. Her doctor diagnosed her with peripheral neuropathy. The most common symptoms of peripheral neuropathy include numbness, tingling, and weakness in arms, hands, legs or feet, sudden sharp, stabbing, or shocking pain sensations, burning pain, loss of touch sensation, clumsiness and trouble using hands to pick up objects or fasten clothing, loss of balance and falling. Fortunately for Gloria, Acupuncturist Renée Stucklen has been reversing the effects of peripheral neuropathy for over 10 years - without invasive surgeries or medications that come with uncomfortable side effects. After a series of treatments, Gloria noticed that she was sleeping through the night and she was regaining sensation in her arm.

Most aneurysms are caused by a breakdown in the proteins that provide the structural strength to the wall of the aorta. These proteins can gradually deteriorate with age. But inflammation that is associated with atherosclerosis can accelerate this process.

The type and location of the aneurysm will determine the symptoms.

The size and location of the aneurysm determines the treatment method. For example, aneurysms in the upper chest are usually operated on immediately. Aneurysms in the lower chest and the area below your stomach are watched at first. If they grow too large or cause symptoms, surgery may be required. If you have an aortic aneurysm, your doctor may prescribe medicines before surgery or instead of surgery. Medicines are used to lower blood pressure, relax blood vessels, and lower the risk that the aneurysm will rupture. Beta blockers and calcium channel blockers are the medicines most commonly used.

• Bring twice as much medicine as you think you’ll need (make sure it’s in the pharmacy bottles)

Chest aortic aneurysms, which occur in the large blood vessel (aorta) that carries blood from the heart to other parts of the body, may cause shortness of breath, a raspy voice, backache or shoulder pain.

Fortunately, aneurysms can be detected by a physical examination, X-ray, ultrasound, and modern imaging systems such as a CAT scan or an MRI.

• Get a checkup before your trip to make sure you know how planned activities might affect your diabetes and how to adjust your insulin dose if you’re in another time zone. Also, ask your doctor to write a letter stating that you have diabetes and why you need your medical supplies and to give prescriptions for medications in case you lose them or run out.

• Get a medical ID bracelet that states you have diabetes.

The standard treatment for aneurysm once it meets the indications for surgery is replacement of that weakened portion of the aorta with an artificial graft. In recent years, a treatment has been developed to repair an aneurysm using less-invasive surgery.

Ask the Expert 10

There are also naturally occurring enzymes that cause the breakdown of the proteins. An excess of these enzymes or other conditions that activate these enzymes may also contribute to the formation of an aneurysm or its sudden growth. In rare cases an aneurysm may be caused by infection.

Abdominal aortic aneurysms may cause pain or tenderness below your stomach, make you less hungry or give you an upset stomach.

Aneurysms are pretty scary things. Do they have any symptoms? Aneurysms are artery bulges. And, yes, they are scary because, if they burst, they are lethal. Many victims of a ruptured aneurysm die before they get to a hospital.

Cerebral aneurysms may produce headaches, pain in your neck and face, or trouble seeing and talking.

“You just have to plan ahead,” says Nancy Klug, diabetes educator at Tucson Medical Center. “The more you do, the more you’ll be able to relax and enjoy yourHeretrip.”are 10 ways to ensure you feel your best while on holiday:

• If you’re driving, pack a cooler with healthy snacks and water. Keep your insulin in there, too. Just don’t put it directly on the ice pack. If you’re flying, order a special meal that fits your meal plan or pack one.

• If you plan on being more active than normal, keep close watch on your blood sugar and adjust food and insulin as needed.

Columns tips traveling with diabetes

Ventricular aneurysms in the heart’s main pumping chamber (the left ventricle) may cause shortness of breath, chest pain or an irregular heartbeat.

• If you’re traveling to another country, learn the language enough to say helpful phrases such as “where is the nearest pharmacy” or “I have diabetes.”

Healthy Geezer

• Get out of the car and walk every hour or two. If you’re flying, get up and walk up and down the aisle a few times.

• Pack your diabetes supplies in a carryon bag if you’re flying.

Things that come with traveling — trying new foods, eating at different times and being more active (or less) than normal — can all have an impact on your diabetesThat’smanagement.nottosayyou shouldn’t take the trip. (You totally should.)

The following increase the risk of getting an aneurysm: being older than 60, plaque in the arteries (atherosclerosis), high blood pressure, smoking, injuries or infections of the blood vessels, a congenital abnormality and inherited diseases.
