LAHORE … GIVE ME MORE! THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE IT

I

t’s now been four years since our trip to Pakistan, and there’s a current meme on Facebook that says, “If you had a magic wand, where on earth would you go?” Without a second thought, I say, “Lahore, Pakistan.” I know my friends were, and still are, surprised that I glow when talking about Lahore. Simply put, we did not have enough time there as that segment of our Pakistan visit lasted only three days. In December 2016, we had intended to only visit one place in Pakistan: Islamabad. The female campus of The International Islamic University of Islamabad had invited my husband and me to visit so we could show our documentary feature, “Beauty Bites Beast: The Missing Conversation about Ending Violence.” Remember this was mere weeks after the November 2016 election in the United States that started the out of control Trumpster Fire, which is still burning. Even in Pakistan, people knew that Hillary had gotten 3 million more popular votes, and many we spoke with were as upset and bewildered as we were. The look in their eyes of “you let us down” spoke volumes without uttering a word. I contacted the United Nations Association in Pakistan to see if we could show our movie in any other areas since the trip to Pakistan is a ginormous undertaking. Our feeling was, as long as we’re there, let’s make the most of it! Each year U.N. women groups everywhere take 16 days to commemorate their vision of ending violence against women. In 2016, the Punjab ministry was just rolling out a “one-stop” locale for everything a woman needs to escape domestic violence. Briefly, Pakistani women often would not report DV incidents because it meant having to shuttle between many agencies: police, legal, childcare, time off of work, mental and physical health. Having just one place that handles everything was a radical idea, not only in Pakistan but even in the U.S. as we don’t have this innovation here.

After word got out about us being in Islamabad, we were asked if we could go to Lahore to help kick off this new initiative by screening our film there. Our answer? Yes! Unlike Islamabad, the audience for our Lahore screening included men. I was most moved by a father and daughter who talked to me after the film. The father said, “I was reluctant to come because I was afraid it would be about hating men! It wasn’t. It included us as a part of the solution to ending violence against women. Thank you!” The daughter added, “I begged him to come, and I promised him it wouldn’t be offensive, and it was entertaining too!” Ah. Music to my ears, although “Your film isn’t offensive,” is a little like being damned with faint praise. On the other hand, “offensive content” is a big deal in Lahore, which has different rules than Islamabad. My husband had to make the requested edits to the film in our hotel room! We did a fair amount of sightseeing, especially in the “Old City,” the ancient walled area of Lahore that predates written history. While there, I swear I could hear the cacophony of sounds echoing across millennia from those who made Lahore the ancient crossroads it has always been. I could see glimmers of camel caravans, smell the spices from the spice markets that have been there forever, and appreciate a city that tolerates many different cultures and religions. Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, Jews … all have not only crossed paths in Lahore but have traded peacefully. We were strolling next to the old city one night and had stopped to view the ancient walls when a man with two little boys approached us. “I see that you’re Americans. May I have my sons shake your hands, so they have a good experience of people from your country?” The two most darling little guys walked up, and we shook their hands, and our hearts almost burst. Then, as we were walking by a tea and coffee stand, the proprietor ran out and wanted to give us a hot drink since it was a tad chilly outside. We tried to pay, and he rejected it. So I said, “Would you like to take a selfie, and we can post it to our Facebook pages?” We did, and I held up a handwritten sign: “Best Tea in Lahore.” We also made friends in Lahore with a woman who is near and dear to us to this day, Kiran Khan. My husband and I both write for her publication. I’m proud to say that I’m the only American writer I know who writes every month for a Pakistani national magazine, “International Culture and Art.” Yep, give me that magic wand, and I will fly back to Lahore in the blink of an eye! n Ellen Snortland has written Consider This… for the Pasadena Weekly for decades. PRESIDENT TRUMP: MONUMENTAL CATASTROPHIC FAILURE

EDITOR: The President and the GOP’s shameful government have left countless small businesses with no choice but to close. They’ve also left 22 million Americans unemployed, and 28 million at risk of being evicted. The inept and corrupt government has led to 80% of Americans to live paycheck to paycheck. Where is the Republican leadership? Evil reigns, when good people refuse to act. With 4% of the world population and 22% of its cases, America comes in last while our president falsely claims we are doing well. He means the wealthy are doing well. Let’s continue to look at the facts under Trump’s leadership. We have 6,676,258 million cases, 197,652 deaths and a hospitalization rate of 156.6 per 100,000 which places us again at the bottom. Add to this tragedy childhood infections are up 720%, hospitalizations up 356% and deaths up 229%. Michael Osterholm, the director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota, said that there could be a spike in coronavirus cases this fall and that the U.S. has “another 12 to 14 months of a really hard road ahead.” Osterholm said that while a COVID-19 vaccine could become available, it wouldn’t have a “meaningful” impact until 2021 at the earliest.

SOUTH PASADENA

HOW A SEWAGE SPILL LED TO A MAJOR CHANGE IN SOUTH PASADENA’S CITY POLITICS. BY MATTHEW RODRIGUEZ

N

ever doubt a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens because that’s is all it takes for change to happen. In the past several months, South Pasadena’s city government has been engulfed in controversy concerning budgetary errors to fake email accounts. Also, two city officials, former City Manager Stephanie DeWolfe and former Councilwoman Marina Khubeserian retired or resigned in the past two months. Khubeserian became the first South Pasadena councilmember to resign since the 1950s. While there had been distrust building within the community, the follies of the city government would not have been revealed if it weren’t for a sewage spill in a resident’s backyard. The spill Alison Smith lives in her quaint two-story home with a canyon view off Hanscom Drive in South Pasadena. Since trees surround most of the home, her three kids decided to nickname their mother’s home the “magic treehouse.” Smith has called South Pasadena her home for nine years. She’s built a reputation for being a dedicated dance and musical theater teacher, as well as a loving mother. A couple of times a year she dresses up in her old cheerleading outfit, gets up on stage and leads her child’s elementary school in their pep rallies during Red Ribbon Week. She was a model citizen, never causing trouble for the city until the sewage spill. “I went down there to pick up the landing pad and I noticed the ground was wet,” Smith recalled about the morning of the spill. “I came around the corner because I didn’t know where the water was coming from. I knew that I hadn’t left a hose on or it hadn’t rained or anything.” In January 2018, after Smith dropped off her kids at school, Smith walked down to her yard to find gray water overflowing onto the artificial turf she had installed for her children’s play area. “I came around and there was water, just gray water at the time, just spilling, coming out of my cleanout, the lid of the cleanout had been popped off,” Smith said. “I immediately called my plumber and my plumber said that’s not a job for me.” After calling her plumber, Smith called a roto-rooter company to have her pipes snaked. Within a few hours, the roto-rooters arrived however Smith and the others began to notice other items leaking into the yard. “We noticed clumps of toilet paper, tampons, wipes and all kinds of stuff coming out of the pipe itself,” said Smith. “That’s when the odor began.” The roto-rooters explained to Smith that as more people use their toilets the more items would be spilled onto her yard. “Within a couple of hours after that, then the feces started,” said Smith. “Around 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. is when more and more excrement was coming out.” As the roto-rooters snaked her pipes and drains, they realized that the excrement, toilet paper and everything else spewing from the pipes were not coming from Smith’s home. “He was like, ‘This is not coming from your pipes. This is coming from someplace else,’” said Smith. The rooters and Smith walked door to door to tell her neighbors about the situation and to see if the problem was with other surrounding pipes. “We were knocking on all of the surrounding areas,” said Smith. “They had to snake my neighbors’ houses as well. It was not connected to my neighbors. It was not in a lateral line. They said this is coming from something bigger.” According to Smith, after hearing the news that it was something else causing the spill, she called the city for help but to no avail. According to Smith, since it was a holiday weekend during the spill the city had no resources to help her until later in the week. According to Smith, the city asked her to go to her neighbors’ homes and ask them to stop using their toilets or anything related to the plumbing while they gathered people to clean the spill. This newsgroup tried to have the city confirm Smith’s statement, however, did not receive an answer as of the writing of this story. 4 PASADENA WEEKLY | 10.01.20

After getting off the phone with the city, feeling that there was no help coming soon, Smith decided she was going to try to clean up the sewage herself. She strapped on her rain boots, grabbed a broom and started to vigorously sweep the spill off of her children’s’ play area. “I was very upset because all over the turf, so I got a broom and started vigorously sweeping it off because I felt helpless and nobody in the city was coming to help,” she said. “At one point I swept it so hard that the feces actually came up and hit me in the face.” With feces covering her face and no help coming, Smith stood there, motionless for a second, in disbelief. “At that point, I just stopped everything. I couldn’t believe what was happening,” she said. “I just kind of numbly walked upstairs, took off my rain boots and right into the shower… It was that moment where I just felt so alone. I felt so alone in that moment because the city had not helped…” The next day the city arrived and abated the spill—30 hours after it happened. While the sewage was abated, the spill yet to be completely had cleaned leaving Smith with a backyard she still cannot use to this day. The home once known to her kids as the “magic tree house” now had a new nickname, the “poop yard.” “All I wanted was a peaceful resolution,” Smith said. The plea In the months following the spill, Smith filed a $1.2 million lawsuit against the city, hoping to get at least some restitution for the spill. While the actual money Smith paid for the plumbers and roto-rooters was substantially lower, her lawyer at the time explained that it was just how it works. “My attorney said ‘Oh, you’re not going to get that, you just got to start way up here and by the time you finish you’re just going to get your basic expenses covered,” Smith recalled. Within the calendar year, as the settlement number dropped substantially, Smith was visiting her friends at the Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri when she decided to speak in front of the city council to plead for a resolution, tired of the back and forth between lawyers. In August 2019, Smith stood in front of her city council members and delivered a three-minute speech. “[I decided] when I go back to South Pasadena I am going to speak at the city council meeting,” said Smith. I’m going to speak and say my words and they’re my council members, they’ll help me out. We’ll just forget about all this lawyer back and forth and I will plead for them a resolution in all of this.” Feeling good about her three-minute speech to her city council, Smith hoped that her plea would finally bring an end to the back and forth. In October 2019 after retrieving her mail, she noticed a letter from the Code Enforcement Department of South Pasadena. “We have received complaints regarding the interior and exterior modifications to your house and we are requesting an immediate code inspection of your home,” Smith said recalling the letter she received. According to Smith, she has not remodeled her house in the three years before receiving the letter. Also, she claims that the exterior or interior of her house is not visible from the streets. “There’s no way you could see my house exterior-wise or interior-wise unless you walk down five flights of stairs and look into my windows,” Smith said. Smith’s attorney at the time advised her to not allow an inspection of her house as her lawsuit against the city was still active. “My attorney’s final word was ‘She will comply with this request after litigation is over. While litigation is going on she will not comply with a walk through of her home,’” said Smith.

PW DINING

Following her attorney’s final correspondence with the city, Smith was greeted by three South Pasadena police officers as she was ushering her kids to the car for school. “I was greeted by three police officers who had their cars all parked in front of my house at 8 a.m. with my neighbors in their driveways, watching my children not knowing what was going on,” said Smith. The officers served her with papers for an inspection of her home. If she did not comply, the officers would do a forced inspection and entry if necessary. “I said, is there any way they can move it next week because I’m supposed to be the chaperone for my daughter’s school trip,” said Smith. In response, the officers said that the warrant allowed them to enter her home with or without her permission, and would break her windows to get in if they had to. “I wiped off the tears, got in the car and I got my kids to school,” Smith said about what she did after the police left. “I came home and I called my friends Steve and Sheila Rossi and I told them what was happening.” From the investigation, the city reported that they had found 29 code violations within Smith’s home. The city claimed that based on their findings that Smith was at fault for the spill. The whistleblowers Stephen and Sheila Rossi have known Smith for 10 years after their children attended the same kindergarten. After they received the call from Smith, they felt obligated to help her after they believed the complaint was falsified. “You’re supposed to have some sort of visible work done, it has to be visible from the streets, and it needs to be specific for what they’re looking for,” said Sheila Rossi. “This is like a blanket [search]... It was like a fishing expedition.” Feeling distraught for her friend, Rossi and her husband began to help Smith dig for information. “We’ve been friends for years, but the biggest issue for me was that it was falsified,” said Rossi. “I knew without a shadow of a doubt that they falsified this.” The couple began with the affidavit submitting public record requests trying to find the paper trail that led to the warrant issued for the forced inspection. While the requests were either delayed or withheld, they continued to look for any evidence they could find. In their search, they had found the information provided to the judge misrepresented Smith’s home. According to Rossi, the city submitted two pictures — a before-and-after picture of Smith’s home. The before picture showed Smith’s 1000foot home while the after picture showed her neighbor’s 3000-foot home. “They did not provide documentation of a complaint and provided an after photo that represented [Smith’s] neighbor’s house as Smith’s [own] house,” Rossi wrote in an email. “Her house is in the picture, but it is hidden in the lower righthand corner.” In addition, Rossi and her husband found that “there was no complaint recorded in the city’s complaint log and the complaint was not investigated by the city’s regular code enforcement officer, but rather a senior contract planning official from Transtech.” In addition, they found that the cured-in-place

PW ARTS process which was used to repair 60 percent of the city’s sewage lines has a known defect which may cause blockages in sewage mainlines. After helping Smith, Rossi and her husband both financial consultants, decided to dive into the finances of the city. “We were already a little bit frustrated with the city and know that they are not being truthful and honest,” said Rossi. “We saw the action with the Alison [Smith] situation.” The budget Once Rossi and her husband heard about irregularities in the finances from a social media post, they decided to investigate the city’s financial record as well. “I started noticing some irregularities in the numbers,” said Rossi. “I was like this is strange.” Rossi noticed that while the city had both a general fund and special fund, only information on the general fund was provided. In addition, she noticed that the “transferred out” numbers did not match. They discovered that there were two significantly different budgets; one approved by the finance commission and one submitted to the city council. Realizing something was wrong, Rossi and her husband placed the two budgets into a spread sheet and analyzed the two figures. “[The analysis] showed that they had made $14 million of changes between the two budgets in three days with $4 million just to the beginning balances,” said Rossi. In conjunction to the report submitted by the city’s former financial director Josh Betta, the budgetary woes of South Pasadena displayed a cause for concern that many in the community demanded answers for. “I don’t know if we would have been paying close attention to what the city was doing if we hadn’t seen them do something that seems so wrong in the first place,” Rossi said about delving into the city’s finances after witnessing the ordeal Smith endured. “We knew that people weren’t happy and knew that there was a lot of criticism of the current city manager and everything, but it wasn’t until that instance where [we said] ‘Oh my gosh , they’re willing to completely lie and do anything it takes, this is a such an egregious act. I think that’s when we started digging.” The resolution Since the resignation of Khubesarian and the retirement of DeWolfe, Stephen Rossi, Sheila’s husband was voted into the city council, filling the vacant seat. In order to stay unbiased while fixing the city’s financial situation, he recused himself from speaking on the Smith case. In the almost three years since the spill, Smith continues to be in litigation with the city, also filing a claim for her civil rights being infringed after the forced house search following her plea to city council. “The city attorney has charged the city $158,000 for my case alone. They could have had this all taken care of for under $30,000 if they had just taken care of it,” said Smith. “The three years that has almost taken place, the stress, the loss of use of my backyard the almost complete defamation of my character and reputation in a town that I have worked really hard to build one in… No one should have to go through that. [However,] it’s made me stronger. There’s always a gift and there’s always a reason behind every dark cloud.” n

FIRED LANGHAM WORKERS WANT THEIR JOBS BACK BY MATTHEW RODRIGUEZ

A

Yesenia Ortiz, Pablo Escot, Miriam Reyes fter Major League Baseball chose Langham Hotel to house players during the postseason, fired workers delivered a letter to the Pasadena City Manager’s office asking for them to enforce a recently adopted ordinance. “I really need my job,” said Miriam Reyes, a former banquet server for Langham Hotel and four other hotels across LA County. “It’s really tough for a single mom, it’s really tough. I know there’s a lot of women in my situation.” Even though Reyes receives unemployment checks, it is not enough to pay for her mortgage and the other expenses of her four children. “I don’t want to receive the check because that check is not paying for all the expenses I have with my four children,” she said. “I feel miserable receiving that check because in 20 years I never even received food stamps.” In July, Pasadena passed an ordinance easing the rehiring process for workers once the economic crisis passes, and hotels begin to reopen. Since the announcement of Langham to house MLB players, many of the fired employees have yet to hear from the hotel about the rehiring process. “We haven’t heard anything from them,” former banquet server Yesenia Ortiz. “We totally understand that we cannot work in a place where there is no business. But we learned that they are going to be hosting players during the MLB playoffs.” In addition to the city ordinance, the workers are calling for Gov. Gavin Newsom to sign AB3216 which provides greater transparency to the rehiring process and expands this program to the entire state. “The only hope is that they’ll be hired back,” said Councilman John Kennedy who gathered with the workers on the steps of City Hall and walked them to the city manager’s office. “These are our neighbors and our friends, people we’ve grown up with. My mother cleaned folks’ houses and she cleaned their laundry. I’m totally united with my brothers and sisters who work for hotels. They need to be treated with the utmost respect. And that’s what we’re here for.” Kennedy also called on Newsom to sign AB3216 before it expires tomorrow. “Gov. Newsom is a friend of mine,” Kennedy said. “And I’m telling them the right thing to do is sign AB 3216 before the expiration… I believe he’ll do the right thing. I believe that the workers must be hired back in seniority first, but all the workers, as the economy turns around, need to be rehired.” The MLB Players Association also tweeted out their support for the workers and the laws once it learned of the situation. “Major League players have long benefited from the excellent service provided by the experienced workers at the Langham Pasadena and are concerned by the reports that the hotel has not rehired many of these workers now that they are resuming operations and will once again be hosting a number of MLB teams,” the MLBPA wrote. “Players stand in solidarity with these workers as they seek to protect their jobs under local law, and we urge Gov. Gavin Newsom to sign Assembly Bill 3216 extending similar protections to hospitality and service workers statewide.” n

A BOTANICAL SPA SANCTUARY

STUDIO JHOIEY CREATES A PEACEFUL SPACE FOR THE PASADENA SHOWCASE HOUSE OF DESIGN STORY BY KAMALA KIRK | PHOTOS COURTESY PASADENA SHOWCASE HOUSE OF DESIGN

T

he annual Pasadena Showcase House of Design is one of the oldest and most successful fundraising house and garden tours across the country. In in 1965, the Pasadena Junior Philharmonic Committee—now known as Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts—held the first Showcase House and it was a huge success. Since then, the event has grown throughout the years to include local vendors, artists, and more in order to raise funds for music programs including the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s Pasadena series of concerts, and to award gifts and grants to other nonprofit organizations. Every year, a different home is selected to be the Showcase House, and different interior and landscape designers participate by transforming and decorating various parts of the house. After the complete transformation, more than 30,000 people walk through to experience the home in person, and also have the opportunity to buy the furnishings and décor. Due to COVID-19, this year’s event has gone virtual, but the experience promises to be just as grand as previous years. The 2020 Pasadena Showcase House of Design will be unveiled to the public virtually on Friday, October 2. The interactive virtual tour, Ultimate Viewpoints:56, will feature stunning photography, 360-degree views and informative videos. The 2020 Pasadena Showcase House of Design is Locke House, a 1937 federalcountry estate in Arcadia that was designed by renowned architect Gerard R. Colcord. Designer Jhoiey Ramirez, who owns the Los Angeles-based, full-service design firm Studio Jhoiey, was the mastermind behind the home’s primary bedroom and bathroom suite, which she transformed into a beautiful botanical theme. “The inspirations were both the architecture and the history of the house and its architect,” Ramirez says. “Being built in the late 1930s by an architect known as a ‘Hollywood Society Architect’ and during the time when the beautification of Arcadia through planting its parkways and bowling greens was in full bloom, we envisioned a client for the space who wants to turn the volume up on glamour and yet still have the space feel relaxed, feminine yet wouldn’t alienate the masculine, and be very dramatic and tactile. We made use of the different tones of green and lots of botanical patterns to achieve this concept. Using lighting to create drama was also a theme followed through the entire suite.” The bathroom suite features wall tiles from Walker Zanger’s Botanicals collection, which included a pattern called “Tahiti” that perfectly matched all the green tones that Ramirez had initially picked from the Dunn Edwards color palette (refined green, midnight garden, fresh sod and white picket fence). She also fearlessly mixed metals with the Sawyer Tub from Americh in Smooth Copper, which was paired with polished gold faucets and fixtures from Franz Viegener to elevate the room so that it would feel like a luxurious spa retreat. “We paired brass with polished gold to add a jewel-like feel to the suite, with plumbing fixtures with modern details that perfectly marry the traditional elements of the room with the Edge Cross collection by Franz Viegener,” Ramirez said. “Now we cannot call it a relaxation suite without using every bit of spa elements for it, from the soaking tub to the dry sauna and a complete Smart Shower with steam experience from ThermaSol for immersive relaxation to the max. The experience is enhanced by being enveloped in aromatherapy, steam, chromatherapy, and sound therapy all integrated into the shower with a rain showerhead. Being in this bathroom suite, the limit is your imagination.” Just a few steps away in the primary bedroom suite, Ramirez selected a porcelain slab tile from Walker Zanger that had the same look as the marble mantel that already existed in the room. She used the slab tile as a panel behind the bedside table sconce and in the steam shower enclosure. While it was a challenge to find floral print bedding that would complement the wood grain pattern in the bedroom and appeal to both feminine and masculine tastes, Ramirez found it in the Designers Guild Indian Sunflower Graphite Bedding from The Linen House, which had a gold threaded wood grain pattern that she combined with her own fabric to complete the bedding and really set the relaxed elegance of the room. She also threw in a Kevin O’Brien burnout silk velvet pillow in Woodgrain Velvet from the same place. “Continuing this push and pull of feminine and masculine, glamour and relaxation, we used lighting to achieve that balance as well,” Ramirez said.

The space integrates tech and wellness with ThermaSol’s Smart Shower, which is controlled by the ThermaTouch Smart Touchscreen that offers precise control over everything from water and steam temperature and duration to lighting, sound and chromatherapy.

“Using crystal ceiling fixtures and wall scones from Allegri Crystal by Kalco Lighting and mixing it with the fashion-forward ruggedness of Hooked wall sconces and Stoned desk lamp from Buster + Punch with a brass finish to tie them all together, we really embraced the eclecticism of the traditional and the modern.” To control the abundance of natural light with both room darkening and light filtering effects, Ramirez used Smith & Noble’s Day/Night shade with a drapery Island Leaf/Green to add softness to the space and bring more botanical patterns. To further soften the details of the ceiling that really replicated all the federal details of the home, she asked Arpy The centerpiece of the bathroom suite is a copper tub from Americh L’Artist to hand paint a mural set against green and white wall tile from Walker Zanger’s Botaniusing the colors from the cals collection. Dunn Edwards palette. “I enjoyed the freedom of imagining my client’s profile and how they will use the room and all the ways they can enjoy it, and this was even before we were all stuck at home due to the pandemic,” Ramirez said. “It was so timely, which gave it even more meaning to us. Pushing the boundaries of design and what can be done in space and how it can be achieved—that challenge really enhances the enjoyment of creating this space. We are completely in love with the final result. It was better than we imagined it. We are also glad that we can push our boundaries and be able to fit in the traditional aspects of the house.” n

‘IT GIVES ME A LOT OF JOY’

LIDIA HADDADIAN IS UP FOR $100K IN COOKING CONTEST BY CHRISTINA FUOCO-KARASINSKI

T

he passion for food and friendship was engrained in Pasadena resident Lidia Haddadian when she was a child living in Brazil. “I love feeding people,” said Haddadian, who now lives in Pasadena. “It gives me a lot of joy.” Haddadian has parlayed that joy into a winning recipe. The home chef is a two-time champion in the World Food Championships and she’s in the finals again in Indianapolis, where nine other champions navigated three cooking challenges in their quest to earn the biggest title in “food sport,” along with a $100,000 grand prize. The winner of “Final Table: Indy” will be unveiled on Saturday, October 3, on The Cooking Channel’s show of the same name. (Check local listings.) The onehour docu-series highlights the competitors’ food sport journey and captures the multiday competition as the aspiring chefs face off in Indiana-specific challenges. The 10 competitors won their spot to compete at the “Final Table: Indy” event by emerging from WFC’s 2019 Main Event, where they beat out almost 500 teams to become the champion of their category. Each champion won a $10,000 grand prize and a new culinary title to their repertoire. In August, they reconvened at Indy’s Ivy Tech Culinary Center to battle three more times, only this time there was a lot more money up for grabs. Other competitors are Jodi Taffel, 2019 Bacon World Champion from Altadena; Matthew Statham, 2019 World Chef Champion from Fultondale, Alabama; Morgan Cheek, 2019 World Burger Champion from Muscle Shoals, Alabama; Ryan Hegland, 2019 World Steak Champion from Lakeville, Minnesota; Josh Cooper, 2019 World Seafood Champion from Tallahassee, Florida; Kelli Fairchild-Cochran, two-time Sandwich Champion (2019, 2014) from Merced; Evette Rahman, two-time Dessert Champion (2019, 2016) from Orlando; Rocky Julianelle, 2019 World Open Chili Champion from East Haven, Connecticut and Ryan Murphy, 2019 World Barbecue Champion from Kansas City. Before Haddadian’s debut at the “Final Table: Indy,” she competed in Food Sport events for 10 years winning about $83,000 in prizes over the years. For her challenges, Haddadian made sweet and spicy stick baby back ribs with Asian flair, and sesame miso gnocchi with cucumber salad; an Asian roasted duck with fried wild rice. “I love barbecuing—more like Mediterranean-style barbecue,” she said. “I like to marine different cuts of meat or chicken. I love grilling. It really relaxes me. I feel like outdoor cooking for me is on the top of my cooking preferences. “I do enjoy being in the kitchen, obviously. I do make a lot of sweet, Mediterranean desserts. We usually have a dessert for dinner.” For the third challenge, Haddadian had to make her own sugar cream pie, which is the Indiana state pie. She incorporated several elements, including phyllo dough, cherry coulis, pistachio praline and rose kiss Chantilly, the latter of which is whip cream with a rose flavor. “I wanted to be myself and show my background,” she said. “I’m Armenian, but I grew up in Brazil. I made a pistachio rose sugar cream pie. I wanted the textures and flavors to pop in everybody’s mouth. It was a really great dessert. My family liked it a lot.” Haddadian honed her cooking skills by watching her grandmother cook in Brazil. “I saw basically that was the way they showed their love for us,” she said. “It was engrained in my heart. That was the way I wanted to show my love for others. The passion was there as a child. “I didn’t really have too many opportunities to cook at home when I was living with my parents in Brazil. My grandmothers didn’t allow me in the kitchen. Once I had to lock them out and I made dinner.” Haddadian’s cooking journey officially began when she moved to the United States and married her husband. For 33 years, she has been cooking for family and friends. “I never realized how much cooking was a part of my life until about six years ago when I started competing,” Haddadian said. “I’ve been cooking with all my heart since then.” n

O

ne of the more heartening developments to emerge in the local dining scene during the pandemic is the emergence of Union Street between Raymond and Fair Oaks as a bustling strip of small buzzing restaurants. On the north side of the street, the city has created outdoor dining lanes with barricades, as also found on Colorado Boulevard and Green Street. These lanes largely service patrons of renowned, high-end pasta mecca, Union, as well as French bistro newcomer Perle, which opened at the start of the pandemic lockdown in March (PW 8/13). That said, it’s the south side of Union, where the real action seems to be—Dirt Dog for bacon-wrapped hot dogs, Main Chick for hot chicken, CHA Redefine for exotic chai tea drinks and now, most recently, Paper Rice for customwrapped spring rolls and banh mi sandwiches. Paper Rice staged a “soft” opening on August 15 and formally opened August 28. It adds variety, dimension and even more deliciousness to the bustling one-block strip that has become a new mini-hub of dining in Old Town. How is it that, as we now regularly witness the sad demise of local favorites, that new ambitious dining operations choose to open in the midst of a pandemic? For Paper Rice, plans to open in the spring had been long in the making. “It started over a year ago, when we bought into this project,” says Jens Kristen, 50, the co-partner and ostensible general manager at Paper Rice. “We had no idea what was going to happen.”

Kristen goes on to explain that the series of storefronts on the south side of Union Street are operated as part of One Colorado, Old Town’s outdoor plaza of shops and restaurants, just across Fair Oaks. The developer designed each of the storefront spaces specifically to accommodate small fast-casual restaurant operations. The local minichain, Simple Things outlet, just west of Paper Rice, will soon be supplanted by the fifth new location of popular Tacos 1986, and there appears to be one vacant space on the strip still available. How did Kristen, a mathematician born in Munich and raised in Sao Paulo, Brazil (he also teaches math and statistics at PCC), come to supervise one of Pasadena’s newest cafes, specializing in Vietnamese spring rolls and sandwiches? The experience of his wife and partner Lee Diep can provide the answer to that question. The concept’s creator, Diep brings family recipes and real authenticity to the food at Paper Rice. The Diep family arrived in Alhambra from Quy Nhon in central Vietnam in the mid-1980s. Lee’s older brother owned and operated the popular Dip’s Grill in Alhambra, so the food business runs in the family. Kristen met Diep at the Urth Café on Colorado seven years ago. He was working for Yahoo, with offices at the Parsons building. During that time, he began to notice the lack of decent fast-casual dining options in Old Town. “[There was] never a quick lunch opportunity,” he said. Meanwhile, Diep began noodling—as it were—on her spring roll concept. According to Kristen, when Diep was

growing up and there were leftovers from a previous meal, “(They would) bring out the rice paper and roll it up.” Rather than serving preset, traditionally composed spring rolls, why not provide lists of ingredient options and allow the guest to customize their own creations? The main event is the “build-your-meal” option, where, for $10.25, you choose either an order of three spring rolls or a “Spring Bowl,” which is, essentially, a deconstructed spring roll assembled into a bowl format. By the way, you shouldn’t need me to exhort you to opt for the spring rolls. For the spring rolls, a “base” of mixed greens or rice noodles gets you started. Next you choose a protein option—braised pork belly; charbroiled beef; lemongrass chicken; garlic shrimp (add $1); turmeric fish; soy garlic tofu; or, my favorite, Nem, Vietnamese pork sausage. You then choose four items from the list of vegetables and herbs. These include mint, basil, bean sprouts, bell peppers, scallions and jalapenos, as well as the ingredients of the recommended house spring mix of lettuce, cucumber, cilantro, pickled carrot and daikon. Toppings to choose from are chopped peanuts, toasted sesame and fried garlic or onion bits. Finally, five sauces are offered— house citrus or spicy, savory peanut, citrus ginger or soy vinaigrette. Each of your three spring rolls may different with any of the ingredients and they all include a thin crispy stick of shrimp eggroll rolled in. At each of my visits, the supremely affable and informed Ethan Ko, 25, gently guided me through the process of assembling my spring rolls. He also happens to be the eldest son of Diep—so trust his suggestions. There are three other primary menu items to consider. The legendary Vietnamese street sandwich style Banh Mi is credibly represented here. For Banh Mi, the bread is half the

sandwich. Served appropriately on a French baguette, Paper Rice’s version is generously portioned and provides a meal at $8. The house special sauteed salad ($13) has already garnered positive critical notice, but it’s the Xoi Chien ($9) that provides the most interesting distraction from the spring rolls. These are fried and stuffed sticky rice patties. They are engorged with ground pork, shrimp, onion and wood ear mushrooms and served in pairs. As Kristen explains, the Xoi Chien is the manifestation of an “Old family recipe handed down from the grandmother to the mother” in the Diep family. Any needy assurances of authenticity will be admirably assuaged by a bite of one of these. Ironically, before the unexpected onset of the pandemic and the subsequent lockdown on local businesses, there was some concern regarding the store’s street presence and relative visibility. “Before the pandemic, I was a little worried,” Kristen said. “How are we going to get people to notice us?” In fact, it was the advent of outdoor dining across the street that substantively boosted pedestrian traffic on the once-quiet block. If anything, the new interest in the dining strip and the proliferation of delivery cars has caused congestion. “Police are stopping and giving tickets,” he said. For the intrepid and otherwise hapless enthusiast of Vietnamese street fare, there are two public lots in convenient walking distance of Union Street and the first 90 minutes are free. A proper spring roll can provide lively, revivifying refreshment in the depths of our ongoing autumn heatwaves. If you want something done right, do it yourself. As Kristen reminds us, at Paper Rice, “You roll it as you wish.”

ALOE BLACC, All Love Everything (BMG): HHH½

Love and hope guide the NELA-based artist’s latest album, which, like 2013’s “Lift Your Spirit,” wears its social conscience proudly. Bookended by “Family” and “Harvard,” two uplifting narratives showcasing Blacc’s supple vocals and principled beliefs, this is a more diverse, musically buoyant collection that dips into soul, folk, bossa nova grooves and classic pop songwriting styles. Highlights: earnest piano ballad “I Do” (dedicated to wife Maya Jupiter), hooky anthems “Hold on Tight” and “My Way,” which delivers Blacc’s core themes: “In the darkness I don’t hide ’cause I got pride, that gives me clarity/ I still wake up in the morning with the vision of a better life/ You see the option of defeat is just not written in my story.” aloeblacc.com

LOS MOCOSOS, All Grown Up (self-released): HHH

The veteran Bay Area Latin funk-rock-salsa ensemble reconvenes with a mix of celebratory dance tracks (“Viva Los Mocosos”) and pointed messages for this chaotic political season. “There will be a day/ When you let go of hate/ And when you see my face/ You see the human race,” newcomer Juan Ele Perez sings over a slinky groove during lead single “United We Stand,” while the saxophone-threaded “It’s All Good” references threats and changes to the neighborhood with more nostalgic restraint, and the hopeful “Brothers & Sisters” pledges, “We fall together or we fall apart/ A change is coming, I can feel it in my heart.” losmocosos.com

FENNE LILY, Breach (Dead Oceans): HHH½

The British singer-songwriter’s sophomore album builds moods and tension by setting her hushed, silken contralto against heavily reverbed electric guitar patterns and thrumming synths — an appropriate combination for a journalistic chronicle of a pre-Covid period of voluntary isolation. The twentysomething artist may have been working through relationship and maturity issues, but standout tracks such as the melodic “Berlin,” “Elliott,” “I Used to Hate My Body But Now I Just Hate You” and “Someone Else’s Trees” (“I’m always scared of leaving and then when I arrive/ I’m distracted by existences now parallel to mine”) feel just as true as cathartic responses to a year of forced solitude and loss. Fennelily.com

THE WAR AND TREATY, Hearts Town (Rounder): HHHH

A joyous, deeply musical celebration of love and commitment that soars in the shadow of Ray Charles and the Staple Singers. Tanya Blount-Trotter and husband Michael Trotter Jr. convey the blessings mined from hardship as well as togetherness in the way they robustly support each other’s roof-raising vocals. That signature hallmark of their performances imparts a visceral jolt, notably to the infectious, Motown-style plea “Five More Minutes”; the “Georgia on My Mind”-influenced “Hey Pretty Moon” (composed while Trotter was serving in Iraq); “Beautiful,” a heartbroken rocker about Blount-Trotter’s late mother capped by a fierce Jason Isbell guitar solo; and the MLK-inspired inclusivity anthem “Take Me In,” which offers hope to a world in need. thewarandtreaty.com

THE RECKLESS NIGHT ENSEMBLE, ¡PanAmericanos! The Songs of Raymond Scott & Lalo Guerrero (PanAmerican): HHH½

A labor of love from LA guitarist Skip Heller, who supplied transcriptions of the original tunes and crisp, sparkling arrangements that evoke the swinging heyday of the widely beloved Guerrero and early jazz bandleader Scott. A shifting lineup of horn, string and woodwind players join Heller and bassist Nick Ornelas, animating highlights such as Guerrero’s “Vamos A Bailar,” “Sixteen Pounds” (a clever parody of Merle Travis’ country classic “Sixteen Tons” that benefits from vocalist Angelica Villarreal’s precise, knowing intonation), and Scott’s instrumental “Powerhouse” with rhythmic bounce and a discernible sense of fun. Markguerrero.net, raymondscott.net

BONNIE WHITMORE, Last Will and Testament (Starlet & Dog): HHHH

Luscious pop hooks, a splash of cocktail jazz, a dramatic reading of Centro-Matic’s “Flashes & Cables” and a rocking indictment of those who insist rape victims “Asked for It” make this a powerful, rhythmically varied “Testament” indeed, though hopefully not the last from the Austin-based musician and songwriter. Vocally, Whitmore can shift from bruised sweetness to righteous fury within one vulnerable phrase, and fully owns mistakes that birthed the wisdom tucked into tracks such as “None of My Business,” the stirring soul ballad “Love Worth Remembering” and “Right/Wrong” (“It’s not like you can take it with you/ The life you live and what you can do”). bonniewhitmore.com

A LOVE ELECTRIC, Permanent Immigrant (Ropeadope Sur): HHH

A more esoteric, rock-oriented outing than the trio’s frequent work with jazz and hip-hop acts might lead listeners to expect, informed by the diverse roots and resumes of Minnesota-raised, Mexico City-based bandleader Todd Clouser, bassist Aarón Cruz and Latin Grammy-winning drummer Hernán Hecht (who also produced). The lean muscularity of “Common Animal,” funk-rocker “Witch” and the title track is counterbalanced by vibier compositions — a slide guitar-embellished “Place in the Game,” the atmospheric “Losing Touch” — that resemble moments of calm before a storm. Toddclouser.com

ALHOUSSEINI ANIVOLLA & GIRUM MEZMUR, Afropentatonism (Piranha): HHH½

A heartening, Saharan blues-infused collaboration between Niger-based Etran Finatawa frontman Anivolla and veteran Ethiopian jazz guitarist Mezmur, recorded at a concert in Nairobi. Singing in Tamshek, Alhousseini implores his beleaguered country’s youth to “protect our peace” (“Algher”), calls for tolerance and unity (the hypnotic “Asmoussoudou”), and leads a spirited call-and-response before an extended jam that ends the eight-and-a-half-minute “Isouwad” on a triumphant note. Tracks such as “Chet Azawad” showcase the graceful contributions of one-stringed Ethiopian violinist Habtamu Yeshambel, Ethiopian krar (five-stringed lyre) player Anteneh Telemariam, mandolinist Ayele Mamo and especially percussionist Misale Legesse. But it’s the chemistry between Anivolla’s almost trance-like vocals and his and Mezmur’s guitars that’s most compelling. piranha.de
