T
he election really is right around the corner and ballots are already being mailed out. In my house, we’ve been deeply interested in the presidential and congressional elections, and anxiously await November 3 and the results that will bring to our country. But there are vital measures that will affect us on the state and local levels as well. As we usually do, my husband and I sort through our sample ballot material and discuss each and every ballot measure in advance, discussing the pros and cons usually reaching agreement. This year Pasadena has just one measure on the ballot. It’s called Measure P. P—like Pasadena. Pretty crafty, eh? But when we got to Measure P, things got confusing. Yes, I understand it, and I support it, but even I, who know as much or more about the need for it as anyone, find the ballot language confusing. So, what I want to do here is to tell you what Measure P is and why we should all vote for it. Pasadena’s charter, since 1934, has called for an annual transfer of net revenues from the power fund to the city’s general fund. In a way, it’s a payment the utility makes to the city because it doesn’t pay any taxes to the city. Another way to look at it is as a dividend the utility pays to the residents of Pasadena. And with that “dividend,” we have more money to pay for city services. This annual transfer of funds has gone to the voters seven times and been supported every time. So why are we putting it on the ballot now? Outside groups are challenging Pasadena’s transfer provisions on whether the portion of the electric rates is a tax and has met the requirements of voter approval called for in Proposition 218 and Proposition 26. Yes, after having been in place since the
1930s and been passed by the voters seven times, it is being challenged. So that’s why we’re putting the continuation of the transfer on the ballot. To have the voters confirm, for the eighth (and hopefully final) time, that we want these funds to be available for use in the general fund to support all city services. The city isn’t asking for a new tax, or an increase in an existing tax. It’s simply asking our residents to confirm and continue the annual transfer as has been occurring for over 70 years. Pasadena is 134 years old, our infrastructure needs continual repair and maintenance, like our sidewalks, streets, parks and fire stations. COVID-19 brought a $30 million financial hit to our city. The funds from the annual transfer are more important than ever to ensure we have a balanced budget and continue to provide the services our residents expect. A yes vote on Measure P means approximately $18 million a year to support city services. We have counted on these funds year after year, as set forth in the city charter and we can’t afford to lose that money now, especially with future financial impacts from COVID-19 still unknown. So, what does the city do with the money? The answer is regular old municipal services. The money is used to support city services, parks, recreation, public safety, police and fire, programs to address homelessness, sidewalk repair, public health services, and infrastructure programs. Real bread and butter municipal work that doesn’t get a lot of press but is essential to the quality of life we enjoy as Pasadena residents. Pasadena residents demand a lot from their local government, and they should. Measure P will ensure we have the funds going forward to provide the levels of service you’ve come to expect. Please support our city and vote yes on Measure P. n

MAYORAL CANDIDATES SHARE THEIR VIEWS TORNEK, GORDO DISCUSS REOPENING, AFFORDABLE HOUSING, POLICE-COMMUNITY RELATIONS AND WOMEN’S RIGHTS. BY MATTHEW RODRIGUEZ
A
s Pasadena and the rest of the nation approach the November presidential election one more major position is up for a vote—mayor of Pasadena. The two candidates left in the field are both long-time public servants Mayor Terry Tornek and Councilman Victor Gordo. The two were scheduled to debate last Sunday, however, it was postponed after a Tournament of Roses staffer tested positive for COVID-19. In interviews with this newsgroup, the two candidates give their views on issues in Pasadena. With the economic downfall caused by COVID-19, what is your plan to assist Pasadena residents and businesses? Tornek: The first thing is to try to get as many things open as quickly and as safely as we can. We can’t begin to talk about recovery until we can get businesses open and we can’t get businesses open until we slow the spread and that’s a real challenge. I’m in constant contact with county health officials and, of course, our health department to try to expedite that. But frankly, that remains an elusive and elusive time frame. We’ll continue to work with businesses in terms of where the city has a direct role in terms of allowing them to continue to occupy public spaces and occupy portions of their parking lot. Beyond that, frankly, the city is not going to be able to provide cash stipends to businesses going forward because the city is going to have to safeguard its resources, which have also taken a beating. The most we can hope for is to continue to lobby for the federal and state governments to step up and to provide assistance.
6 PASADENA WEEKLY | 10.15.20
Gordo: From the beginning of the pandemic, I had demanded that city hall and city staff begin moving and acting to support our businesses and the employees in those businesses by putting in place guidelines and protocols for the safe operation of businesses. We’ve also put in place grants and micro-grants for small businesses, and we need to continue to do that. I was disappointed at the beginning of the pandemic when my opponent canceled meetings and refused to allow the city council or its committees to move quickly to give direction to the city staff to support our local businesses. As mayor, I intend to work very closely, as I have since the commencement of this pandemic, with our business community and the people that they employ to ensure that our local business community is able to operate in a manner that is safe and make sense from a business perspective. The COVID-19 pandemic is predicted to last until the spring of 2021, how will you ensure residents’ safety while also reopening the economy? What challenges do you think you will face? Tornek: That’s the tightrope that we’re walking. There’s an absolute sort of push and pull here in terms of the desire of businesses to get open and at the same time, our obligation as public officials to make sure that public safety is maintained, which is our primary responsibility. There’s a growing intensity to the demands of various business sectors to open. It’s not unwarranted in the sense that, these businesspeople are watching their life savings and their dreams go up in smoke as we insist that they remain closed. They are demanding that we loosen the reins but that’s what happened in July and as we allowed things to open too quickly the pandemic surged and
it started to get away from us again. That’s not surprising until we have a vaccine. Our primary responsibility is to make sure that we open in a safe way. The biggest challenge we face, frankly, is not just the business tight rope but convincing people that normal family activities that we’ve all cherished and come to expect the need to be modified. I have seven grandchildren and I haven’t hugged one of them since March— that’s crazy. I’ve seen them at a distance. They are mindful of not getting grandma and grandpa sick. We just have to continue to convince people that the normal kinds of family actives that we have, the backyard barbecues, the quinceanera, the Halloween and Thanksgiving celebrations cannot be business as usual or else we’re not going to beat this thing. Gordo: The pandemic presents both a health and an economic crisis and the two are interwoven. We have to operate local businesses in a way that’s safe and allows residents to move in and about the city in a manner that is safe. That’s going to take us working together with residents and businesses alike. The city’s health department has a responsibility to ensure that the protocols that we put in place offer clear and direct guidance to residents, business owners and employees. Relating to the economic downfall, how do you plan to increase the number of affordable homes in the city? Tornek: I’ve been in a dialogue with various housing groups and churches, particularly in northwest Pasadena, for months and months, talking about how we could adjust our land-use regulations to make it more plausible for them to build affordable housing on their sites. It’s such a complicated issue and because there’s the usual tension between the desire to get housing built, but not in a way that has an adverse impact on surrounding neighborhoods. That’s why I’ve been meeting with them. I’ve been doing walking tours of specific church properties to see if they’d be appropriate and how the regulations might be adjusted. I think that’s a great opportunity. The motel conversion ordinance, although it got off to a rocky start, is a positive approach The county used it for its operation room key on a temporary basis but I think there’s an opportunity to use that on a permanent basis. When I was on the board of a housing nonprofit, we did a project like that in Huntington Park. That’s why I brought the idea to Pasadena because I saw it work and I saw how successful it was in that community, turning a bedraggled and sort of crime-ridden motel into a permanent supportive housing development. Gordo: I’m proud of my record on affordable housing in Pasadena. It’s a record of getting things done. In my district, we created the most affordable housing of any district in the city. We’ve done it creatively, replacing liquor stores with beautiful, affordable housing for families and seniors. We’ve done that a few times. We’ve replaced burned-out department buildings doing the same thing. We can be creative in this time of limited resources by looking at properties that are in desperate need of reinvestment, rundown or a nuisance to the neighborhood. We should work with the city staff and nonprofits to reinvigorate those properties with affordable housing. We should also continue the work of the Inclusionary Housing Ordinance, which I’m proud to champion in 2006, three years before my opponent joined the city council. We should strengthen that ordinance and stay true to the ordinance’s intent. We should demand developers build affordable housing on-site as development occurs naturally throughout the city. With the passing of the police oversight commission and independent auditor, how do you plan to improve the relationship between the Pasadena Police Department and residents? Tornek: I’m proud of the way that the council responded to what was a widespread desire to see some improvement in that area. We still haven’t finished the job. We still need to maintain the sense of urgency. We need to create the format for selecting the members of the commission. I’m going to keep pushing to make this a reality. We passed the ordinance, but that’s not the end, that’s the very beginning. The whole objective is to build bridges between the community and the
police department and give the community, particularly those segments of the community, that don’t feel they are necessarily being treated fairly. It’s meant to give them the sense that they’re being heard, that they have a voice in terms of how the police department functions. Then there’s a whole question about what’s been called the reimagining of the police department. And that is to say, are there certain functions that the police department is currently performing with uniformed officers that might be better performed by other trained professionals? That’s a complicated matter and it deserves close attention. I think it’s incumbent on the council and the staff to listen to the suggestions and see what can be implemented to have more effective policing. I’m convinced that if the community has a greater sense of trust in the department, it’ll make their job more effective and less dangerous. Gordo: It’s important that we have a mayor that’s willing to listen to all vantage points, that’s willing to have discussions with people who may disagree with one another and I’ve proven that I can do that. I speak with our police officers about staffing, training and the need for equipment. When BLM came to my home, I walked outside and spoke with members of that organization very directly and have been in constant contact with people who believe that we need a change in our police department. I tell them all the same, police officers or activists alike, we need to work together. We need to ensure that the police department works transparently to protect the residents of the city, and we also need to address the issue of trust because it’s very real. What’s transpired in our country in the last six to eight months is that we’ve seen people want us to do things differently in terms of transparency and the availability of information. We should take that seriously and we’re headed in that direction. With 52% of Pasadena’s population being women, how do you plan to further women’s voices in government? Tornek: We established a target with regard to this new community oversight commission seeking to hopefully have 50 percent of the commissioners be women. I’ve had an active practice, to try and appoint as many women as I can. More than 40 percent of the commissioners that I’ve appointed are women. Some in the more nameplate, high visibility commissions; the Rose Bowl operating company, the planning commission, these have been appointees that I have made that are women. I think that we need more women on the city council. One aspect that I think may be helpful in that regard is that I intend to press for term limits on city council terms. I think that could help in terms of making more city council opportunities available to women as well as others. The other thing that I focused on as another aspect of equal rights for women is that the 19th Amendment didn’t really give women of color an opportunity to vote. It was decades later that finally started to happen across the country and not until the voting rights amendment in 1965 that happened. I’m not trying to sort of blur the line. I think in many instances we have to look not just at women’s rights, but minorities’ rights and particularly minority women who have suffered for a long time. Gordo: Fifty-two percent of the population are women, but they makeup 60 percent of our labor force in Pasadena and not the city of Pasadena, but in the city as a whole. The median wage for women is $54,000 for men it’s $59,000. We also have to keep in mind that 30 percent of all households are occupied and headed by women. That means 16,800 or so of 60,000 households have a woman that’s the head of the household. It’s important that we take those numbers seriously and provide opportunities for women not just at the entry-level, not just into management positions, but also at the executive level and executive positions. I’m proud of the fact in my term on the city council at one point we had the trifecta. We had a city manager who was a woman, Cynthia Kurtz, a city clerk, who was a woman, Jane Rodriguez and Michelle Bagneris as our city attorney. Things have changed now, and we don’t have that situation. I think we need to bring more women through the ranks and to give more opportunities for women to serve in those top positions, as they once did in Pasadena and I’m committed to doing that. n 10.15.20 | PASADENA WEEKLY 7
CHAMBER CRITICIZES PUSD FOR MEASURE O PASSAGE WOULD IMPROVE SCHOOLS BUT RAISE TAXES BY MATTHEW RODRIGUEZ
P
asadena Unified School District placed Measure O on the ballot garnering criticism from the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce. “We’re in the middle of the worst economic downtown since the Depression,” said Chamber of Commerce President Paul Little. “Everybody’s worried… Every local business that leases space is going to have an increase in rent. Not to mention people who are residential renters who are going to see an increase in their rent because landlords pass the costs on to the tenants.” According to ballot information, Measure O would allow PUSD to sell “$516,300,000 in bonds at legal rates, levying $45/$100,000 assessed value (averaging $28,504,000 annually)”. Little and the chamber’s main objections to the bill is poor timing and lack of a plan. As a result of the economic downturn caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that 7.9% of the United States is unemployed. Although this is an improvement from 10.2% in July, it is still a drastic increase from February at 3.8%. February’s unemployment rate was one of the lowest on record in the post-World War II era, according to Pew research. According to the Employment Development Department of California, the unemployment rate in the state fell to 11.4% in August. Last year in the same month the unemployment rate was 3.9%. In the Foothills area, which includes Pasadena, South Pasadena, Arcadia, Duarte, Monrovia and Sierra Madre, the unemployment rate was 13.9% as of September 18. During the PUSD Board meeting, board members Kimberly Kenne and Elizabeth Pomeroy voted against placing Measure O believing it was rushed onto the ballot with no project list and could cause a financial burden on Pasadena businesses and residents. Little also expressed his distrust with the PUSD after the school district was nearly taken over by the Los Angeles County Office of Education after PUSD faced financial insolvency last year. “It’s just the wrong time, why not wait a couple of years [and] show some financial responsibility,” Little said. Little also believes that the increase in the taxes would close down businesses already operating on a tight budget and may drive residents away with higher rents. In turn, this would further deplete the school population of PUSD. PUSD Vice President Scott Phelps disagrees with Little’s view. “I believe the economy is recovering and this (measure) won’t impact them immediately,” Phelps said. “We wouldn’t sell the bonds for at least a year—six months to a year… In the first two years, it would increase somebody’s property tax by $20 per $100,000 of assessed value.”
8 PASADENA WEEKLY | 10.15.20
He added that after the first two years the rate would increase to $45 per assessed value per $100,000. According to Phelps, in the first two years, if one owns a home worth $600,000 it would cost them an extra $120 a year or $10 a month. However, the median home in Pasadena is worth about $800,000, and using Phelps’ math, it would cost an average resident an extra $160 or about $13 a month. “That’s not going to be the difference to anybody leaving town or moving away,” Phelps said. “Now if you’re a commercial business sure your property is worth more and so it’ll increase a little more.” According to Phelps, if a business’s property is worth $6 million the property tax would increase $1200 or $100 a month. “A whole lot of people are working less hours than they have before and bringing home less money and there are businesses that are making almost no money,” said Little. “Any increase is potentially fatal to homeowners, businesses and renters.” Also addressing the lack of a plan, Phelps cited the information on the ballot for Measure O. According to the sample ballot, the funds must be used to: 1. Remove hazardous materials such as asbestos and lead paint, from older schools 2. Improve student access to subjects such as science, technology, engineering, the arts and math 3. Retain and attract quality teachers 4. Upgrade schools to prepare students for high school, college and careers 5. Repair leaky roofs, improve student safety with updated smoke detectors, fire alarms and sprinklers and provide safe drinking water In addition to the criteria by which these funds must be used for, independent audits and an independent citizen committee will oversee the use of funds to ensure that they are spent for only the authorized uses. “It takes investment to have great facilities,” Phelps said. “If you believe that the public schools should have nice facilities like the private schools then you should support it.” Even though the changes would not affect residents and businesses for an estimated two years, Little still believes the effects will harm Pasadena. “They’re talking about this whole recession settling out in maybe 2022 and settling out means leveling off at whatever level we’re going to be at,” said Little. “What’s the rush?” n
POWER OF EQUALITY YWCA’S WOMEN FOR RACIAL JUSTICE BREAKFAST GOES VIRTUAL BY SARAH DONAHUE
F
or more than 160 years, the YWCA has been at the center of the fight for social justice and equality, aiding in the quest for civil rights, women empowerment, equal pay, affordable housing, violence prevention and health care. “Eliminating racism, empowering women,” is the mission of YWCA, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. The leaders and donors who have made significant contributions with their time, money and efforts will be honored at the 18th annual Women for Racial Justice Breakfast: Strong Foundation, Stronger Futures at 9 a.m. Monday, October 19. In past years, around 300 people gathered at the Pasadena Hilton. However, due to COVID-19, it had to transition to a virtual gathering. KTLA 5 evening news anchor, Cher Calvin, will emcee the online celebration. The in-person event also used to have pop-up shops like Ten Thousand Villages, a fair-trade clothing company, as well as a “bookmark” list of books with a corresponding display at the Pasadena Public Library, according to YWCA Pasadena Board Member Deborah Kinley. Since that can’t happen this year, the YWCA has created a virtual bookmark, which provides attendees with a “racial justice reading list” consisting of authors like Zora Neale Hurston, Maya Angelou and Angela Y. Davis. Melina Abdullah, co-founder of Black Lives Matter LA, will be the event’s keynote speaker. Abdullah, who is also a professor of Pan-African studies at Cal State LA, has been a significant voice in the fight against systemic racism. Kinley said she anticipates Abdullah will offer an inspiring, riveting speech about the current racial unrest in the country. Five women will be presented with the 2020 Racial Justice Award for an Individual: Judy Brown, Johari DeWitt-Rogers, Edith Grady, Denise Jones and Margaret Leong Checca. Together, these women have provided over 100 years of service to the YWCA Pasadena and have been integral to the creation and continuation of the breakfast event. An In Memoriam Racial Justice award will be presented posthumously to Rebecca Medina for her activism efforts. Until her death this year, Medina was a community leader and a supporter of the Pasadena YWCA. She also served as vice chairwoman of the Commission for the Status of Women as
well as chairwoman of the Racial Justice Committee and as a YWCA board member. Kaiser Permanente will be presented with the 2020 Racial Justice Award for a Corporation “for its dedication to the support of community health.” The organizers hope to raise $50,000 through the breakfast. As of September 25, the organization received $45,000 in donations, according to Kinley. There will be opportunities to donate during the online event, she added. The YWCA Pasadena serves the needs of the local underserved girls, ages 10 through 15, by providing after school programs. The programs used to focus on the northwest of Pasadena, where girls would be picked up after school and brought to the YWCA location, Kinley said. However, since the pandemic, “we’ve had to think of some different things.” As of now, “we’ve gone virtual,” Kinley said. More than 120 girls are signed up for the after-school programs, which educate the girls in STEM as well as arts and literature writing, she said. “We are trying to empower our girls to eliminate racism and go on and be the best that they can be,” Kinley said, adding that many have gone off to college and created a success story for themselves. The YWCA also used to offer computer classes for those living at Villa Gardens Los Angeles Continuing Care Retirement Community, Kinley said. During the past few years, however, the Pasadena YWCA had to cut back and is now collaborating with the Glendale YWCA. The two YWCAs work together in part to offer a summer program called Camp Rosie, Kinley said, adding that the name pays tribute to Rosie the Riveter, a World War II-era feminist icon. Now, not only are Pasadena girls served by its programs, but girls in surrounding areas like Glendale, Arcadia and Burbank are being embraced and educated, Kinley said. n

A STEP FURTHER CHARITABLE GYM RAISING FUNDS FOR BREAST CANCER RESEARCH BY CHRISTINA FUOCO-KARASINSKI

asadena-based Aion Training is offering a month of personal training services in which the entire cost is being donated directly to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Charity workouts are not new for Aion Training, as they are a staple at the gym following previous fundraisers for No Kid Hungry, Thorn, Angel Tree, Young & Healthy, and the American Civil Liberties Union. With October being Breast Cancer Awareness month, Marcus McDuffie, owner of the Black-owned establishment, decided to go one step further. For each person who signs up to train with Aion Training in October, the first month’s payment will go directly to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Aion Training will take no profit. “It’s pretty cool, honestly,” McDuffie said. “Last year, we held one charity event and we sold shirts. We ended up raising $1,500. This year, I wanted to step it up. We’re also doing a charity workout two weeks from now.” The workout to raise money for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation is 8 a.m. Saturday, October 24. Visit aiontraining.com or email marcus@aiontraining. com. McDuffie grew up in the Riverside area and attended high school in Moreno Valley with 4,000 other teens. After graduating, he attended Occidental College, which brought him to Pasadena. “I played football there for three years and then quit to do physical training,” he said. “It shaped a lot of what I learned. I do think that contributes to what’s happening in the world. I’m a little more educated in certain areas and able to talk to my clients and have them understand it.” In 2019, he founded Aion Training, Pasadena’s top gym for those 40 and older. While prioritizing community, care and form, Aion Training offers various forms of personalized training services, athletic boot camps and nutrition consulting inperson and online. Aion Training separates itself from its competitors by focusing on long-lasting, lifelong, personalized results to ensure that each client leaves feeling lean and pain free. “We’ve created an awesome culture,” McDuffie said. “We’re not just going to be people who are just obsessed with the gym. We’re focused on the community outside of the gym. A couple of my members are meeting up at a food bank. We’re more than just people who go to the gym and lift weights.” n 10 PASADENA WEEKLY | 10.15.20
illiam Iyawe-Parsons knows credibility is everything. When he and his three partners—Khalid Namoos, Max Yeh and Tam Nguyen—created Sympol Products’ Moisturizing Hand Sanitizer, they knew they had to be FDA registered and make the items pleasing for customers. Sympol Products is keeping customers safe from COVID-19 by producing 10,000 gallons of moisturizing hand sanitizer each week in scent free and aromas like spring blossom, lavender, grapefruit, peppermint and tea tree oil. The key was to develop pleasing aromas that would mask the strong smell of ethyl alcohol. “Our chemists identified many plant-derived oils that could be used to not only provide great aromas, but Khalid Namoos, William Iyawe-Parsons, also effectively moisturize hands, Max Yeh, Tam Nguyen, Osam Iyawe too,” Iyawe-Parsons said. “Product development has been so much fun for us because we love testing new formulas for beautiful aromas to share with you all.” Their formula uses 70% ethyl alcohol, which is 10% more than the CDC-recommended formula. “Providing a product that will be as effective as possible without compromising the nourishing components is important to us,” Iyawe-Parsons said. “Sympol provides a powerful clean and our proprietary oil-blend complements the clean with nourishment. Your hands need your precious oils to stay soft and hydrated. Now more than ever hands are being overly dried and dehydrated and this is where Sympol comes in to make a difference. We must keep ourselves and our communities healthy by taking necessary sanitary precautions and Sympol has figured out how to do so while keeping your clean hands healthy, too.” The products are 100% pure and natural oils leave the skin moisturized, Iyawe-Parsons said. The aromas come from plant extracts with cosmetic-grade aloe vera and kosher-grade glycerin. The items can be purchased from sympolproducts.com, amazon.com, Aveda salons and retail stores and the Andaz Hyatt Hotel in West Hollywood. Sympol Products’ founders recognized that sanitizers frequently lead to dry and cracked skin, but they wanted something better. Sympol Products has a second line of industrial products, but Iyawe-Parsons said manufacturing hand sanitizer for customers brought out his creative side. “It was definitely fun because when you recreate an industrial product, no one cares about the packaging,” he said. “If it cleans the dirty spill on the ground, that’s all that matters to consumers. We could make the packaging fun, pretty and really nice.” Sympol Products—which also includes Osam Iyawe and Taylor Smith—is considering adding more aromas. “Aromas are experience based,” said Iyawe-Parsons, who has a chemical manufacturing company. “You would never want hand sanitizer that smells like skunks. Grapefruit is better. We’re approaching it by creating the perfect grapefruit aroma. “We’re working on herbal, earthly aromas for our hand sanitizer and hand soap lines.” Hand sanitizers are available in 1 ounce, 2 ounces and 4 ounces for travelers. The 8-ounce and 16-ounce options are perfect for desks, waiting rooms and any other high-traffic areas. Prices vary, but customers can save by subscribing. n

BACCHUS’ KITCHEN/CINDY’S DINER: THE FINAL PIVOT STORY BY FRIER MCCOLLISTER | PHOTO BY LUIS CHAVEZ
I
t’s bad enough that the world is broken. Can I cut my hair yet? Yes, in fact last Monday I got my first haircut in seven long months. I managed to track down my long-time “stylist” Priscilla Ochoa at Coven Studios and we were finally and happily reunited. Now I can actually sit down (albeit outside) at a restaurant with a fresh haircut! With COVID-19 cases now slowly declining in LA County, it all projects the vague sense of positive progress. When the lockdown arrived in March and we began labeling my reports here under the episodic banner “The New Normal” we had no idea it would extend to this, the 30th installment. On the occasion of my first haircut, I will declare this entry to be the final episode. This “normal” is no longer so “new.” Fear not, our weekly dining coverage will continue. The first episode in March (PW 3/26)—reporting on the very first week of the lockdown—compared my experience with takeout at two local eateries. One was an unnamed “fine-dining” establishment, where the experience was less than felicitous and the other, better one was Cindy’s Diner in Eagle Rock. That said, no one really knew what they were doing at that point and I had no interest in drawing negative attention to any beleaguered local restaurateur. When that local restaurateur and chef happens to be Claud Beltran, 56, of Bacchus’ Kitchen, let’s just say he deserves a second chance. I’m happy to report that—30 weeks later—he, his staff and the restaurant are deservedly thriving, all things considered. If you are unfamiliar with Beltran and his array of inventive local culinary gambits over the years, you really haven’t been paying attention. The graduate of San Marino High School—where a job tinkering with X-ray equipment led him to a nascent interest in aerospace—began studying for that career at PCC, but was led by the encouragement of friends to enroll in UCLA Extension’s erstwhile culinary program. As Beltran notes, “I was already cooking (for friends) at home. So, somebody said, ‘Why don’t you do this for a living?’” A combination of ambition and good fortune landed him in the kitchen of legendary culinary guru Chef Thomas Keller at Checkers Hotel. The five-year association and collaboration with Keller set the stage for Beltran’s extended engagement on the Pasadena dining scene. Received to wide local acclaim, Beltran has built his fanbase over 30 years. It provides ballast to traversing the uncertain rapids of the pandemic and in creating some sense of stable sustainability in the midst of the ongoing chaos for local restaurants. On a random October Tuesday afternoon, Beltran was winding down from a 300-person catering job the previous weekend. Meanwhile he was in the process of planning the prep for another big job on the next impending weekend. Each of the jobs were for nonprofit groups conducting remote Zoom-broadcast fundraisers with Beltran’s meals delivered to attendees’ homes. Reflecting on the current mode of his catering operation, Beltran muses, “It’s not the same. It’s me putting things in boxes.” At one point in 2016-17, Beltran had three local restaurants running successfully all at once. Though not his first restaurant venture, Claud & Co. (aka “The Eatery”) opened in 2013 in an unmarked corner shop, next to a liquor store on Allen Avenue and Villa Street. The Eatery announced Beltran’s presence on the burgeoning wave of popular and adventurous culinary interest that swept the greater Los Angeles scene over the last decade. The menus at Claud & Co. reflected quirky, changing monthly themes and broad novel takes on traditional ethnic dishes, served in a small dining room that evoked the atmosphere of an illicit speakeasy. Bacchus Kitchen opened five years ago in 2015, as a wine-centered, farm-totable local bistro. A year later, Beltran then opened Perry’s, as the inaugural restaurant at the Hotel Constance, when it first opened on Colorado (PW 7/1/16). The menu there trended to Asian fusion and fresh seafood, and drew popular notice, until the

hotel suspended its dining operations in 2018. After this impressive run, Bacchus’ Kitchen remains as Beltran’s sole outpost in town. Since the advent of the lockdown and the stuttered reopening, Beltran has expanded his outdoor dining capacity from the side patio, into the parking lot and can now seat up to 30 socially distanced diners. Mind you, the indoor dining room seats 85 and is used for catering prep and personal office space for Beltran. Beltran still likes to change the menus. Most recently, Bacchus’ Kitchen has been featuring “Dinner for Two-sday” with thematic prix-fixe menus for two ($50 for takeout; $60 for dine-in). This month the Oktoberfest theme menu offers a starter of endive and mustard greens with yellow beets and mustard vinaigrette, followed by three entrée choices: currywurst, with fresh bratwurst, sauerkraut and fries with curry ketchup; jagerschnitzel, a breaded pork cutlet served with chive spaetzle and braised cabbage with mushroom sauce; or blumenkohlgulasch cauliflower florets in a tomato paprika sauce served over egg noodles. Dessert? Fresh apple strudel baked on-site. You can also opt to add a discounted bottle of Schnaitmann 2017 Lemberger ($38) or a quart of “Oktoberfest lager” ($8). In the summer, Beltran’s take on barbecue was the Wednesday special. Currently, chicken pozole and fresh churros are the featured midweek focus. “On the weekend, we add a lot of additions,” Beltran added. Please also note: foie gras and oysters are always in play at Bacchus’ Kitchen. There’s also a tightly curated reasonably priced wine list. What could go wrong? Across the Arroyo in Eagle Rock, the subjects of my original coverage—Monique King and Paul Rosenbluh—have managed to sustain Cindy’s Diner for breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as their beloved Fox’s in Altadena for dinner service, where the stalwart Armando Ortiz mans the helm. At Cindy’s, part of the relatively expansive parking lot has been refashioned as a nicely appointed, shaded dining area that seats 35 (with chairs from the once popular and now-closed Lincoln restaurant in Pasadena). The indoor dining room—which had been quickly rehabbed in May at a cost of $3,000 for safe indoor dining during the brief three-week window, when it was allowed— seats 75. The couple maintained the beloved Firefly Bistro in South Pasadena for 14 years, before their first “pivot” into diner rehab and the casually sophisticated comfort food that reliably anchors the menus at Cindy’s and Fox’s. Catering is not a mainstay here, but the sale of their fresh-baked whole pies and cakes have been consistently brisk during the pandemic. (Pro tip? Rosenbluh is from Louisville and renders a spot-on authentic chocolate pecan Derby Pie.) As Monique King reflects on the last seven months, “Right now, it’s the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do as a business owner.” To accommodate the shifting mandates, prescriptions and expectations accompanying the lockdown and reopening, “We’ve probably pivoted 30 to 50 times. It’s the art of the pivot.” However, make no mistake, “No matter what; we’re going to figure it out.” 12 PASADENA WEEKLY | 10.15.20
‘Sundowner’ EX-ANGELENO KEVIN MORBY GIVES VIRTUAL CONCERT OF BROODING NEW ALBUM
T
his year, being what it is, Kevin Morby has been celebrating his new album “Sundowner,” due Friday from Dead Oceans, with a six-date virtual tour on which he’s been playing his albums in chronological order. He’ll wrap that tour Friday night with an all-ages concert of “Sundowner” hosted by NoonChorus and the Lodge Room Highland Park. The former Angeleno will be performing from his home in suburban Kansas City; he moved back to his hometown from LA in 2017. He says he decorated his new digs with plants and pine evocative of the California desert and nicknamed the place “The Little Los Angeles.” How much of that bleeds into the music depends on what you bring to it as you listen. The album feels like an organic product or echo of the 2020 pandemic, with all of its fears, funerals, abrupt changes and discoveries. But it was built from demos Morby recorded in isolation in 2017-’18 in a backyard shed vulnerable to extreme heat and cold and arachnid visitors. The process of composing the songs on his guitar with an old four-track Tascam recorder was an education in slowing down, turning inward, and adapting to new seasonal rhythms and sounds. Early last year, they were recorded in Texas with producer Brad Cook playing bass and keyboards and Morby handling guitar and Mellotron. (Percussionist James Krivchenia also makes a few essential appearances.) Opening track “Valley” hints at Biblical imagery as well as road-worn, guitar-strumming troubadours such as Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan as it journeys beneath a sky where “all the stars are broken” into the known unknown. The dreamy, narcotic vibe of “A Night at the Little Los Angeles”
evokes palm trees at dusk, late-night drives from Sunset Boulevard out to the desert, and befriending strangers at pre-COVID clubs. Midway through “Campfire,” a woman’s vocal floats in like a snatch of memory lit by crackling firewood, before Morby resumes his shambling narrative of departed friends and the cycles of time. The cautiously hopeful lines of “Provisions” (“And I never met a morning I didn’t like/ And I never met a night that I wouldn’t try twice”) are enhanced by the swells of a WWII-era pump organ. Throughout, quiet pleasure is taken in discovery—of self, of home, of love—and the realignment of priorities. The relationship that was deepening during the album’s creation between Morby and Katie Crutchfield of Waxahatchee (whose recent album “Saint Cloud” similarly celebrates peace and contentment) seemingly informs the sweetly melancholy “Don’t Underestimate Midwest American Sun” and the title track. With its circle of allusive observations, the latter tune shifts the context of perceptions and reflects at least some of 2020’s existential uncertainty. “I like the sun but I start to run The moment that the sun runs from me I am a sundowner So live and leave I am a sundowner Don’t let the sun go down on me.” n Kevin Morby Virtual Concert Performance 6 p.m. Friday, October 16 $15 noonchorus.com/lodge-room-presents-morby/ kevinmorby.com
