ome of my fondest childhood memories are related to voting. Every election night, the minute my mom returned home from work, she would jump back in the car with my dad, sister and me to head to our nearest polling location, the elementary school just outside our neighborhood. Once inside, my sister and I would split up to accompany one of our parents inside the voting booths and watch them fill out their ballots. (Back in the days of hole-punch ballots, my dad even tried to let my sister punch a hole for him, before a poll worker quickly stopped him.) The four of us would then watch the ballots be fed into the machines and walk out of the school gymnasium proudly wearing “I VOTED” stickers. (My sister and I would receive honorary ones). Recently, I realized that for our family, this was a multigenerational tradition. My mom grew up visiting the polls every election with her parents, naturalized American citizens who’d immigrated here from the Philippines. My grandparents’ insistence that voting was a family event was so ingrained in her mind, she made sure to take my sister and me to the polls decades later. As a third-generation Filipino American, I didn’t realize the rose-colored glasses through which I viewed voting—assuming it was something all other American families did together—until I studied Asian American history in college. There, I learned that Asian American voter turnout has remained low for decades, despite our community becoming the fastest-growing ethnic group in the U.S. in the 50 years since the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965. Only 42% of Asian American eligible voters voted in the 2018 midterms and only 49% voted in the 2016 general election. Of the many reasons Asians immigrate to the United States, the promise of American democracy can be a big one. After experiencing growing corruption within the Philippine

government, my grandparents chose to move here in 1967, and they eventually became naturalized citizens, just like most of the Asian American eligible voters today. Even the other reasons people choose to immigrate here—such as job and education opportunities and family reunification—are all greatly affected by our elected officials. And yet, Asian Americans still don’t show up to the polls. Several barriers contribute to our low voter turnout, such as a lack of access to ballots in Asian languages, unfamiliarity with the American electoral process, and political campaigns failing to invest the time or money to reach out to Asian American voters. Additionally, Asian Americans are expected to assimilate and keep our heads down, never speaking out about social and political issues, thanks to decades of the model minority myth’s influence on our culture. Unfortunately, many Asian Americans adhere to these expectations, believing it’s the only way to succeed here. So, it is up to us—the second, third, fourth generation Asian Americans and beyond—to commit to convincing all eligible members of our families to vote (and to vote ourselves when we’re old enough). Now, more than ever, the opportunities and security for which our families immigrated are at stake, along with our democracy. Today, I live with my grandma. Decades ago, she brought my mom to the polls; this year, she was uncertain about voting because of her age, the dangers of voting in-person during the pandemic, and unfamiliarity with the vote-by-mail process. Because I’m here with her, I’ve persuaded her to vote again and am helping her fill out her ballot. Though voting may look different now, we are continuing the family tradition. n Madison Foote is a team leader intern with Students for Justice and a graduate of Loyola Marymount University, where she minored in Asian-Pacific American studies.

•CONSIDER THIS• BY ELLEN SNORTLAND

DEBATING THE MERIT OF DEBATES WE ALL NEED OUR OWN MUTE BUTTONS

I

watched the final presidential debate on October 22 because I knew most people would skip it. And, according to the ratings, many people did just that. I learned that listening to Drumpf’s bellowing and then bellowing back at my TV had no impact whatsoever other than to increase my already irritated throat. “We have the greatest economy, thanks to me!” “If Joe gets in, he’s going to pack the court!” “Rioters and looters!” “The virus is almost gone!” “Mute him! For Pete’s sake mute him now!” (That last one was mine.) Thankfully, the mute button was used this time during each candidate’s primary 2-minute section, and it worked. Unfortunately, I could still hear Drumpf’s nonstop stream of lies. As a matter of fact, the nonpartisan groups PolitiFact and FactCheck.org both rated Drumpf’s Lie Quotient “off the charts.” I’m pretty sure not one voter changed their mind. In truth, these “debates” are neither presidential nor debates. Anyway, other than braying and Lie-A-Palooza, here are the other takeaways I got: • Every time the Orange Stain on America mentions “socialism,” that rightwing bogey man of governance, I yell, “Norway! Norway! Norway!” Why do cowardly Democrats get so squeamish at the mere mention of “socialism?” Along with Drumpf, many U.S. politicians of both parties hold Norway up as a beacon of national perfection. They don’t know that Norway uses a hybrid socialist/ capitalist model of gender equity, basic decency, and universal healthcare. Good grief, we wouldn’t want that. • Although the Supreme Court-packing issue got scant air time in this last “debate,” what the hell do people think the Republicans have been doing? For years, they have been packing both the Supreme Court and lower courts with judges who reflect the fringe elements of our society. They are entirely out of step with what the American people want regarding immigrant rights, gun rights, reproductive rights, LGBTQ rights and more. Obama’s pick, Merrick Garland, never even got a hearing, yet he was a beacon of moderation and judicial temperament. For a deeper dive into Republican judicial strategy, head on over to Amazon Prime or the free service TubiTV and watch “Hot Coffee.” This was a brilliantly made yet underseen documentary that will “unpack” for you what the extreme right has been doing for decades now. Packing the courts at every level. • As far as muting goes, so many of us women have felt muted during this regime that it’s astonishing we’re able to even function. Our feminism is insulted and assaulted at every turn. We’re such a meme-oriented group now that the following meme from Eva the Diva on social media expresses our gender angst beautifully: “Women are told not to post photos that show too much skin because it might limit our future career options. Men who are rapists are elected to the highest office.” • The Commission on Presidential Debates needs to either disband or rebrand. Commission on Blather Bouts? Commission STFU Fests? Commission on Verbal Vomit? • There was a shift in Drumpf’s demeanor. He was on a tighter leash, although he was still growling, straining, and lunging. I was reminded of the venerable maxim: “Never wrestle with a pig. You get dirty, and the pig likes it.” • Here was another great meme on Facebook this week: “While my husband was queued up to vote, someone pulled up to the line outside the church in their car and asked, ‘how long have you been waiting?’ Some guy in the middle of the line yells, ‘Four years!’ and the crowd cheered.” • While we’ve been mesmerized by the “malarkey” and gross debate shenanigans of the Orange Face Poo-Poo Undies (a nod to Madeline Kahn), this administration has gutted hard-won environmental and conservation wins. A partial list includes: The National Environmental Policy Act; The Endangered Species Act; The Clean Water Act; The Safe Drinking Water Act; The Farmland Protection Policy; The Coastal Zone Management Act, ad nauseum. This regime is bent on destroying our country and the planet for all but the extremely wealthy. Finally, and more locally: in case you’re wondering about Proposition 24—an initiative that the League of Women Voters has urged a “No” vote on—it needs a very loud yes! (See? All women do not vote the same just because they are women! We are not a monolith.) Full disclosure: I have been a board member of Consumer Watchdog for 30 years. We are lawyers and activists committed to consumers’ well-being. Voting yes on Prop. 24 will force the ginormous tech companies to enable privacy protections that benefit regular gals and guys. Let’s have California be a leader in preventing the mining of our personal information. I’ll close again with the chant, Norway, Norway, Norway! California is the Norway of the U.S. Hey, let’s secede—debate that. n

JERICHO ROAD CELEBRATES 10 YEARS OF HELPING OTHER NONPROFIT BY JULIA SHAPERO

A

s a nonprofit that helps other charities, Jericho Road Pasadena is a little different from most volunteer organizations. “We’re kind of an interesting nonprofit,” said Executive Director Melanie Goodyear. “We don’t help people. We help the organizations that help other people.” Pasadena and the surrounding areas are home to over 1,700 nonprofits, which assist a community of approximately 150,000 people, 14% of whom are below poverty level. Jericho Road Pasadena helps other greater Pasadena-area nonprofits grow by matching them with volunteers, said board member Gayle Tomita-Oswald. Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the organization has allowed 200 skilled volunteers to provide more than 20,000 hours of consulting to local nonprofits. “It’s like a win-win,” said Janet McIntyre, the board chairwoman. “The volunteer gets to do meaningful, purposeful work that plays to their strengths and skills. And the nonprofit benefits from skills like client writing or website development or financial management.” The organization was initially created through a church in Concord, Massachusetts, Goodyear said. Given the success of the model in Massachusetts, a member of the Neighborhood Unitarian Universalist Church in Pasadena started researching the needs of nonprofits in the area and eventually raised funds and hired Goodyear as its first staff person, she said. With a background in social services, Goodyear said she had seen similar organizations perform amazing work, but lack the necessary time, talent or funds. “(In) one of my first jobs in social services, twice a year the executive director would come to staff meetings and be like, well we might be out of money, we might need to close,” she said. “I think learning nonprofit management in the school of hard knocks really made me passionate about the fact that, if we can help nonprofits market well and have good financial infrastructure, they’re just so much more able to do their good work.” Tomita-Oswald said she got involved with Jericho Road Pasadena because she liked that she was able to use her professional skills to help nonprofits. “I am much better at my professional skill set of project management and account management (and) helping with website development, than I am at chopping vegetables,” Tomita-Oswald said. “And it was one of those things that I always felt like, when I was going and volunteering (at other nonprofits), I was helping, but I always felt like I wasn’t really the best volunteer.” Many nonprofits are in particular need of assistance due to the coronavirus pandemic, McIntyre added.

“I think the needs are getting greater and greater and I think nonprofits are feeling the pinch,” she said. “With organizations being more underresourced than ever before, matching them with volunteers that can provide things that they might have to forego at a time like this is even more important now.” Tomita-Oswald was one of two new recently added board directors. The other is Gerald Phillips, a project analyst for Economic Resources Corp. He’s been the grant manager for ERC’s infrastructure improvement project, jointly funded by the U.S. Department of Commerce, Economic Development Administration. Tomita-Oswald is a freelance digital marketer, focused on website management and customer relationship management. Previously she worked at advertising agencies Team One/Saatchi & Saatchi LA and Genex, as well as on the client-side at Hyundai Motor America and Nissan North America. She has been an active volunteer with Jericho Road Pasadena since 2017 and is also active with the NAACP of Pasadena and the League of Women Voters, Pasadena Area. Jericho Road Pasadena is always looking for more volunteers, particularly in the areas of IT and marketing, Oswald said. “If they have business skills, we’d welcome them as volunteers,” Goodyear said. “If they’re a nonprofit that hasn’t used us before, they’re welcome to call and get free services from us. If people are interested in becoming board members, we can train and place people to be on boards.” McIntyre added she has enjoyed watching the nonprofit evolve over the years she has been involved. “The first time I got involved with (Jericho Road Pasadena), they weren’t even quite a nonprofit yet,” she said. “They were actually affiliated with the flagship organization out of Concord, Massachusetts. And just (to see) where they’ve come, and then now being a part of it, it’s been really neat to see the progression.” n

EVICTED DURING A PANDEMIC ALTADENA RESIDENT IS LIVING IN HIS CAR AFTER HE’S KICKED OUT OF HOME STORY BY MATTHEW RODRIGUEZ | PHOTO BY LUIS CHAVEZ

n August 15, amid a pandemic, Victor McClain’s landlords told him to vacate his room because they found someone who could pay $300 more than him. “It was a text on my phone saying that was my 30-days [notice],” said McClain, a 59-year-old lifelong Altadena resident living off disability checks. “Nothing legal, no legal paperwork or anything… They’re bullies.” Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed into law an eviction moratorium. Under this legislation, no tenant can be evicted because of rent owed during the pandemic. Los Angeles County had a similar eviction moratorium, which expired September 30, prohibiting evictions for nonpayment, no-fault reasons and COVID-19-related violations. “The landlord just wanted him out and that is what we call a no-fault reason,” said Inner City Law Center legal fellow Barbara Horne-Petersdorf. 6 PASADENA WEEKLY | 10.29.20

“It’s not due to any fault or error by the tenant, but just the landlord’s desire to lease the property to someone else. This kind of eviction, had it been filed in court, would have been unsuccessful… The landlords here didn’t even try to go through the legal processes and drove him out outside of the law.” According to McClain, after receiving the text message from his landlord telling him to vacate the premise, they refused to

MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN CHURCHES WITH AMPLE LAND HOPE TO BUILD AFFORDABLE HOUSING TO HELP THE COMMUNITY STORY BY MATTHEW RODRIGUEZ | PHOTO BY LUIS CHAVEZ

W

ith congregations dwindling, many churches and religious institutions in Pasadena have ample land with no use for it. “A lot of families were moving away, they couldn’t afford to live in Pasadena,” said Pastor Othella Medlock of New Life Holiness on why her congregation has diminished in the past few years. “A lot of people tried to hang in there. For a couple of years, they tried to drive from the Inland Empire and San Bernardino. As the years went on and we got older people just couldn’t do it any longer.” Medlock has been part of her congregation for her entire life. Her mother was the preacher before her and her father acted in an overseer type position. In its heyday, New Life Holiness church had 100 members helping throughout the community running food banks and other programs. Now it has a mere 30 members, but even with depleted numbers the church still seeks to help those in need. After seeing members of her congregation leave because of rising housing costs Medlock hopes to reinvest into the community by building affordable housing on the unused parts of land that her church possesses. “We could help the community with our land and having these units placed there,” Medlock said. “This opportunity would afford us the ability to do the benevolent work that we believe the lord wants us as the church to do.” In the past few years, with the rising cost of housing in Pasadena, many have been forced to move away. While COVID-19 devastated other parts of the economy, housing in Pasadena continues to rise. According to the housing market website Zillow, Pasadena’s median home value is $887,355 an increase of 7.7% from last year. The value is projected to rise by 8.2 percent. This trend has been happening across the state as the affordable housing market continues to dwindle. “Finding sites is one of the hardest things of any affordable housing [project],” executive director of Making and Community Happen Jill Shook said. “People are realizing this a huge untapped resource… churches are just like ‘we don’t have the members we used to, we’ve got these empty parking lots, we’ve got this underutilized building.’ It becomes a win, win, win for everybody; the community, the church and the city.” While the idea of transforming church land into affordable housing is still in the works in Pasadena, it turned into reality in San Diego and Santa Ana. Before turning the land into housing, the city must first change the zoning codes to allow religious institutions to build. When the idea of building homes on religious institutions’ land was brought to the city council in a previous meeting, the councilmembers seemed enthusiastic about increasing the housing stock. “The fact that they would be willing to invest that land in providing affordable-housing sites is too attractive to pass up,” said Mayor Terry Tornek during a previous city council meeting. “I’m strongly supportive, and delighted that Councilmember Wilson raised the issue in terms of making sure that this doesn’t get slow-walked and that it really gets the kind of attention that it deserves because there are very few opportunities like this.’’ To get the ball rolling, Medlock has been working with real estate developers. With the technical help from these consultants, she could continue to help the community. “[Churches] have old buildings that need maintenance and they find it harder to make ends meet in terms of paying their pastors, staff, maintenance and all of

take his rent, removed his door, locked him out of the home and also threw his possessions into a dumpster and on the curb. He later replaced the door with his own money only for it to be removed after he left. “They don’t just take it off, they take it with him,” McClain said about the door. “They cut my hats up, they took my bed and took the TV off the wall.” McClain’s landlords could not be reached for comment. During this whole ordeal, McClain has been sleeping in his car or staying with family in Victorville or Palmdale. “I’m going anywhere, where they’re going to let me sleep, shower, change my clothes, regroup and try to get a grasp of things,” said McClain. In between the trips from his former home and others’ homes he would come back to collect his personal belongings or what was left of it.

those things,” said Arroyo Group principal, Phillip Burns. “Repurposing the land for affordable housing can be good from them in multiple ways.” According to Burns, one of the biggest barriers for many projects such as the one Medlock hopes to accomplish is zoning and permits. “The most obvious barrier is that some churches have zoning that does not allow for housing or only allows housing as an accessory,” said Burns. “Second one is related to the density of housing that’s permitted. Some churches are sitting on land where housing is permitted but only at a low density.” Burns continues by saying that density and affordability are “inversely correlated;” the lower the density the fewer units to spread the land cost around, which in turn raises the cost of each unit. Burns said the range is to have 40 to 60 units per project. The plan for Medlock’s church is to build a 52-unit affordable housing complex right on their property. According to the church’s real estate agent Andre White, if the congregation chooses to build affordable housing units they will be locked into a regulatory period of 55 years. This period will also reset if the church uses the same program to refinance. Also, the units will be placed in a lottery for those searching for affordable housing. “There’s a lottery, so a person just moving here can’t come in and say, ‘I want to live in this affordable housing complex,’” White said. “All of these affordable housing complexes have waitlists in the thousands.” While the church could sell the land and make more money from that than building affordable housing it does not fit with their mission statement. “We’re doing it because we have something to offer,” Medlock said. “We’re looking to share we’re not looking to gain this mass amount of money.” n

On a recent day where he returned to the home, McClain found more of his items in trash cans. One of the items was a baby picture of his daughter Dmorea, who he calls “big biscuit.” She earned her master’s degree the day before. “She’s a straight-A student. She’s amazing,” McClain said. “That’s why I got so upset because those were her baby pictures they threw out. Those things mean a lot to me.” In addition to the items, McClain found in the trash his collectors’ train set and all of his hats cut down the middle. “[The hats] meant just as much as my daughter’s pictures,” McClain said. “They’re not baseball hats. They’re Derbys. I get them from different places… I used to be with the 4 Horsemen of Pasadena and every time we would go somewhere, I would get a derby.” McClain has filed complaints against his landlords. The case is still pending. n 10.29.20 | PASADENA WEEKLY 7

THE NEW NORMAL ZEPHYR MEDITERRANEAN GRILL & CAFÉ: MOM’S PLACE STORY BY FRIER MCCOLLISTER

A

dmittedly, I am late to the party. Even though Zephyr Mediterranean Grill & Café just opened at the end of July—as outdoor pandemic dining protocols were settling in at local restaurants—a buzz was loudly sounding around this place, its menu and the unusually high quality and authenticity of its food. Three months later, I can attest and verify that the initial burst of adulation and attention was entirely deserved. That said, let’s be clear. Any reference to Mediterranean cooking in Pasadena is code for the cuisine of the Armenian diaspora. And so, it is here. Chefs Silva Bilamjian and husband, Hovig, ably represent the regional interpretations of Lebanon and Syria, where each of them grew up respectively. Assisted front-of-house by their daughter Gasig and her husband, the amiably articulate

Mike Minassian—who also serves as press spokesman— Zephyr manages to convincingly distinguish itself from the other hummus and kebab joints in town (and we have many good ones). The secret? If you haven’t figured it out already, it’s what I call the Armenian secret weapon: Mom. Silva brings her own matriarchal lineage of recipes, techniques and care to the cooking here. It also helps that the ingredients are exceedingly fresh, and each dish is made to order from scratch. Reflecting on this Armenian sensibility, Minassian suggests, “(For us) food is comfort. Food is everything. Moms are the ones who make it all happen.” Silva rules the kitchen here but Hovig mans the small wood-fired oven that produces the Lahmajoun and other flatbreads on the menu, including Sujoukh sausage and

cheese, za’atar and cheese, as well as a popular Khachapuri take and the Lebanese street bread Ka’ak Asrouniyeh. By the way, the flatbreads are a bargain. Running between $2 to $5 with the Khachapuri more of a main dish at $9, my za’atar and cheese flatbread had me questioning my allegiance to pizza. By the way, the housemade falafel, labneh and hummus all fall under Hovig’s expert purview as well. But more on the menu later. The journey to this quiet, shady bungalow on East Colorado began for the Bilamjian family more than 10 months ago. Although the couple briefly owned and operated the restaurant and hookah club Babylon in Pasadena, the core family business for many years was the Good Food Market on Washington Boulevard and Allen Street. The market has long been a fixture in the vibrant local Armenian community. After selling the market, Hovig was all but retired, but still restless. As Minassian asserted, “Ask any Armenian when they’re going to retire and the answer is ‘When I die!’” Minassian had been an occasional guest at the Zephyr hookah lounge, which had previously occupied the site. It was shortly after the city had banned hookah lounges last summer that a “For lease” sign was freshly posted. Minassian began pitching his fatherin-law on a restaurant concept premised on “quality and home recipes.” As Minassian urged, “This will be family.” Hovig and Silva were sold on the idea and a deal was struck for the venue. Renovations began—including the installation of a full kitchen—with the intention of opening last December. “First, it was December then we decided to push it to January and start the year fresh.” By then word of the pandemic was out and uncertainty ensued. “We wanted the dust to settle and see what our options are, what we’re getting ourselves into.” The timing seemed to work out. With outdoor

distanced dining approved and encouraged, the Zephyr’s lovely outdoor patio area—which comfortably seats 50 guests—proved to be a valuable asset. The café is set in an unusually quiet and shady pocket of East Colorado and the outdoor layout exudes a humble but irresistible charm. It’s the perfect setting to explore the menu. The menu? The Mediterranean appellation suggests the usual suspects: hummus ($6); falafel ($9/$11); baba ghanoush, also referred to as mutabal here ($6); tabbouleh ($7) and kebab plates ($14-$20). Yes, this reliable lineup appears but again, all as scratch-made specialties. There is also cheese boreg ($8) and montee ($12), not often found locally beyond the confines of the Su-Beoreg & Monta Factory on Washington Boulevard. The former is a light puff pastry stuffed with cheese and dried cured beef and the latter are tiny open-faced beef dumplings baked in a yogurt tomato sauce. How about foul ($6) the popular fava bean and tomato salad? In addition to falafel and kebab wraps ($9$11), the sandwich options include homemade Aleppo mortadella ($12) stuffed with garlic and pistachios and served with pickles. Along with the aforementioned wood-fired flatbreads, other specialties include sujukh sausage and eggs ($10) and sinee koufteh ($17) a beef and bulgar wheat mixture layered with spiced ground beef ($17). The fried cauliflower ($9) served with extra creamy tahini is superb. Fund, which addresses humanitarian needs developing in the wake of the brewing conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The proceeds of the day’s sales were donated directly to the fund to support the Armenian cause. As Minassian posted, “Since we cannot physically be there to support and defend our homeland, every Armenian is doing their part by raising awareness and fundraising in order to provide much-needed humanitarian aid. We sincerely thank our customers, who come from all ethnicities and backgrounds, for helping support this existential and humanitarian crisis.” More fundraisers are planned. Finally, let’s hear from mom herself. As translated by Minassian, Silva reflects on the magic she conjures at Zephyr. “My inspiration and what motivates me to cook here at the restaurant is for those hard-working parents or individuals who are unable to make homemade food. RESCUING CHRISTMAS FOR KING & COUNTRY SAVES THE HOLIDAY FOR THE LESS FORTUNATE BY CHRISTINA FUOCO-KARASINSKI

or King & Country’s Luke SmallFor King & Country’s first holiday album, “A Drummer Boy bone didn’t necessarily feel down Christmas,” was recorded around the world. about the quarantine. It gave him time to slow down. “Everybody’s situation is different,” Smallbone says. “For me and my household, it was an amazing reprieve. I’m just gone—in and out of town a lot. I was able to be home for the longest time in our marriage and we’ve been married for 10 years. “Last year, I said, ‘I’d love to be able to take six months off and just be home.’ I didn’t think it would come with a pandemic. We live on a little farm. We bought some cows, eight cows. We were doing things I wouldn’t otherwise get to do. We were able to make some memories that otherwise wouldn’t exist. I hope for better circumstances, but it’s great to be home.” Now, however, he and his brother, Joel, are returning to the stage for “A Drummer Boy Drive-In: The Christmas Tour” to celebrate the duo’s first holiday album, “A Drummer Boy Christmas.” The tour includes a stop at the Rose Bowl’s parking lot on Sunday, November 15. Smallbone says the album, which was in the works for “years,” was no easy task. “In the past, we overemphasized every tiny little detail,” he says. “With that, you lose a little bit of the big picture. We had to get this thing done in a certain time frame. We had to go in with our intuition the first time around and we didn’t have an option to go back. “Every record that you ever make is a small miracle. There are so many things that have to go according to plan. We tracked most of this while the pandemic was going on. It was mixed in London, with some tracking in LA, mastered in New York and also tracked in Nashville. Yet, we were all basically in our homes.” With the live shows, the Grammy Award-winning Australian brothers teamed with The Salvation Army and ask concertgoers to bring new, unwrapped toys. The goodies will be collected by representatives from the nonprofit and distributed to families struggling during the holiday season. “When we first came to America, we didn’t have any money,” he says. “If it wasn’t for our family being a first-grade class project, we wouldn’t have been able to have Christmas. “We were looking at the idea of not being able to have gifts under the Christmas tree. The idea of gifts isn’t what defines Christmas. It is the element of Jesus and his birth. It’s a gift. It’s representing the birth. Partnering with the Salvation Army, it’s a way to remember what it was like to come to a new country, a place where we had nothing. We’re at a situation where we had this opportunity to give back to people and Rescue Christmas.” For King & Country is saving Christmas in other ways. With collectives like Mannheim Steamroller and the Trans-Siberian Orchestra grounded due to the pandemic, For King & Country is providing holiday entertainment across the country. “I say from the stage every night how grateful we are that people come out and join us for these drive-in events,” Smallbone says. “For us to do these shows for people in cars—and doing it safely—it’s a real honor for us.” n

HELPING THE COMMUNITY

PASADENA SHOWCASE HOUSE SEEKS ARTS APPLICANTS BY KAMALA KIRK n avid supporter of performing arts in the community since 1948, the Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts (PSHA) provides financial support and assistance to nonprofit organizations to help with their efforts every year through its annual Gifts & Grants program. The 2020 program began accepting submissions on October 1 and encourages all qualified organizations that provide music education and programs to the community to apply. “Each year, PSHA awards gifts and grants to a broad and diverse list of nonprofit organizations to support their efforts in the community,” said Marybeth Rehman-Dittu, chairwoman of the Gifts & Grant Committee. “We underwrite concerts to ensure that the joy of live music is made available to a wide range of audiences. We support choirs, musical theater, school marching bands, dance programs, opera, jazz bands and orchestras. This enriches the community and provides opportunities for a variety of groups—from students to seniors—to learn, enjoy and grow from their experiences in these programs.” The application period for the 2020 Gifts & Grants program closes on November 15 and awardees will be notified in April 2021. Over the years, gifts and grants have included music education at all levels, music therapy for at-risk children, the underwriting of concerts, the purchase of instruments and uniforms, as well as other art programs. The geographical scope of the program extends to nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations within the greater Pasadena area and designated areas of Los Angeles. Past recipients have included A Noise Within, California Philharmonic Orchestra and Pasadena Symphony Association. “All manner of music plays center stage,” Rehman-Dittu said. “Past grant recipients include concerts, choral productions, music theater, jazz quartets, marching bands and orchestras at local schools, senior centers and a spectrum of other nonprofit organizations. What’s more, music therapy for at-risk children, scholarships for young musicians and music education at a variety of levels are the brainchildren of our program.” An elected group of dedicated PSHA members decide who receives gifts and grants. The selected recipients’ merits are based on the project’s quality, accountability and soundness of the design. Committee members conduct interviews and site visits to better learn and assess a project’s impact on the community. The public can help support the program a number of ways, which include participating in one of PSHA’s fundraisers, becoming a patron or sponsor, designating PSHA as their choice at AmazonSmile, volunteering as a PSHA member, and making a selection in the Shops at Showcase when buying a ticket to Pasadena Showcase House of Design. “Pasadena Showcase is more than dedicated, we are ‘ferociously’ dedicated, as evidenced by our persistence this year in both sticking to our commitment, despite the pandemic, to complete the 56th House of Design, to other creative ways to raise funds to support our mission to bring the joy of music to the community,” Rehman-Dittu said. “For example, just recently our Pasadena Strong online auction raised over $100,000 to dedicate to future gifts and grants. Watch for more unique and interesting news from Pasadena Showcase soon.” n

or the past 28 years, Pasadena Heritage, a nonprofit organization dedicated to historic preservation in and around Pasadena, has hosted Craftsman Weekend—a popular annual event that celebrates the American Arts & Crafts Movement. The three- to four-day event has guided tours of Pasadena’s historic neighborhoods, receptions in historic locations, hands-on seminars and lectures, in addition to an antique and contemporary furnishings and decorative arts sale. The weekend always ends with the Sunday Home Tour, which allows visitors to tour five to six historic homes in the area. “Craftsman Weekend began in the early 1990s as a determined effort to build upon the popularity of our tours featuring craftsman homes and neighborhoods,” said Sue Mossman, executive director of Pasadena Heritage. “Pasadena Heritage’s craftsman tours were regular sellouts, prompting us to add a lecture and a place for exhibitors and book sellers to display their wares: on the front porches of historic homes on tour. Board chairman Lew Phelps and his wife, Cathy, both craftsman lovers, envisioned a whole weekend of tours and events and led the charge to expand the program, calling it Craftsman Weekend.” This year, Craftsman Weekend has been reimagined with a broader frame and a new name, Preservation Pasadena: Craftsman to Modern. Attendees will explore architectural style and design over five decades and learn the connections and differences that illustrate how architecture has changed over time. Due to COVID-19, the event will be virtual and held on Zoom. It will feature 16 events over 10 days, ranging from online tours and lectures to panel discussions, and conversations with artists and collectors. “For several years we have been expanding the programs that we offer during our annual Craftsman Weekend to better align with our mission and to explore all of the various styles of architecture in Pasadena,” said Patty Judy, education director for Pasadena Heritage. “In deciding on a name, we wanted it to explain who we are and what we do. Our mission guided us that ‘Pasadena Heritage works to identify, preserve and protect the historic, architectural and culture resources of the City of Pasadena,’ so Preservation Pasadena: Craftsman to Modern summarizes the mission statement. It is the name we will use from now on for our annual fall event.” The event will include live and prerecorded events, although most days will feature live talks and presentations by notable figures in the field of historic preservation and architectural history. Topics will include a talk on Richard Neutra by Barbara Lamprecht, the preservation of minority communities, the influence of Asian and Hispanic design on California architecture and a panel discussion celebration 100 years of Sunset Magazine. Because travel isn’t required to enjoy the programs this year, Pasadena Heritage is hosting more out-of-state participants, and will make recordings of each live event available afterward so ticketholders can view them anytime. “This year we are excited to invite people to the event who in the past may not have been able to attend due to the need to travel to Pasadena,” Judy said. “While some of our events are particular to the architecture of Pasadena, there are several programs of interest to a general audience. For example, there will be a presentation that will change the way you look at playgrounds and public space that explores the preservation of historic playgrounds. In addition, we will offer a virtual tour of the Prospect Park neighborhood, Pasadena’s first National Register district and the first tour that Pasadena Heritage hosted as an organization over 40 years ago.” Pasadena Heritage is also partnering with The Gamble House to see how they have incorporated Stickley furniture into the historic museum home by architects Charles and Henry Greene. Author and TV producer Stephen Gee will discuss buildings by architect John Parkinson, whose work includes the Memorial Coliseum, Bullocks Wilshire, and many structures on the University of Southern California campus. The event will also celebrate the second Dr. Robert Winter Memorial Lecture with guest speaker John Brinkmann,

The Millard House also known as “La Miniatura” designed by Frank Lloyd Wright

owner and publisher of American Bungalow magazine. “Most of the events will include a question-and-answer opportunity, and one of our social events includes trivia where guests will be asked to answer questions for a chance to win prizes,” Judy said. “We are also hosting two days where participants may meet and greet with some artists and antique dealers who specialize in decorative arts and furnishings from the craftsman movement.” Tickets costs $10 to $20 per program and will be available to purchase up until the day of the event, which runs from Friday, November 6, to Sunday, November 15. Participants may purchase tickets separately or purchase a discounted ticket that includes all of the events. Pasadena Heritage’s staff encourages the public to register in advance to ensure a spot. “Starting about five or six years ago, the popularity of the craftsman movement began to wane,” Mossman added. “We began discussing how to still cater to our craftsman crowd, but gradually shift or expand the focus of the weekend. By including a variety of historic architectural styles and periods, and especially the now very popular modern era, we hope to attract and entertain a much wider audience. And because participants don’t have to come here to Pasadena to take part, we can offer a wide array of subjects and presentations.” n

‘A Handful of Earth, A Handful of Sky’ “F JOURNALIST LYNELL GEORGE DISCUSSES HER BOOK ABOUT PASADENA LEGEND OCTAVIA E. BUTLER

ree and clear.” So many closely held dreams were compressed into those three words, written by late Pasadena literary legend Octavia E. Butler in handwritten contracts she made with herself as she struggled for decades to succeed as a writer. In her compassionately written new book, “A Handful of Earth, A Handful of Sky: The World of Octavia E. Butler,” award-winning journalist Lynell George sets them down as evidence of the pragmatic discipline required to create the fantastical worlds of landmark Butler novels such as 1979’s time-traveling “Kindred.” Butler’s taskmaster perfectionism and relentless financial fears are on display throughout “A Handful of Earth, A Handful of Sky,” which presents an intimate, vivid portrait of the writer’s life detailed with extracts from Butler’s notebooks, journals, letters, bills, calendars, marginalia, shopping and to-do lists and a mountain of library slips. It’s George’s third book, after 1992’s “No Crystal Stair: African Americans in the City of Angels” and 2018’s widely praised “After/Image: Los Angeles Outside the Frame.” It extends her ongoing examination of the importance of place, as Butler’s writing is deeply rooted in the natural landscape of Pasadena and Altadena. But George, who was recently honored with a Distinguished Journalist award by the Greater Los Angeles Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, took a left turn while researching the Huntington Library’s Octavia E. Butler archive; instead of traditional biography, Butler’s work and experience form a prism through which to explore creative process. The book delivers a gratifying tactile experience with its smooth, heavy paper, Jon Stich’s vivid cover painting and Amy Inouye’s creative layout adorned with George’s photographs. One such picture depicts a tableau arranged at Butler’s gravesite with loose flowers and notebooks taped over with self-admonishing reminders such as “I am a woman at odds with myself.” “That quote really stayed with me,” George said during a recent conversation from her Pasadena home. “She was and I think many of us are when we’re trying to do something that not everyone can see; you’re constantly explaining yourself or defending things. She spent a lot of time doing that.” Dreadfully shy, poor, and 6 feet tall by her mid-teens, Butler’s voluminous notes chart the development of her formidable internal resilience as her literary visions were rejected by relatives, teachers and, initially, publishers. Born in Pasadena in 1947 and raised by her widowed mother, she was a “voracious reader and sensitive observer” who “lived deeply and vividly in her imagination,” George writes. Her Pasadena Library card escorted her into otherwise inaccessible worlds, and as she pursued her calling, she created characters who reflected her experience as a young Black woman in midcentury America. “The writing was a way of giving her space both as a person and as a writer to create characters and situations that she could see in her own life but hasn’t seen on the page,” George said. “[She could] move her characters in and out of situations in the rooms and give power to people who didn’t generally have power, either in society or in books.” While a freshman at PCC, Butler won a short-story contest. The prize: $15 — the greatest tangible reward her writing received for years. But Butler, who worked intellectually undemanding jobs in offices and factories to pay rent, harbored no illusions. “Writing is a form of gambling,” she wrote to herself in one of the many notes George quotes in the book. She gambled hard for decades, depriving herself of sleep, proper nutrition, society and financial security to center her life around writing. Her journals

outlined goals with striking numerical specificity, and her self-critiques reveal a wrenching lack of mercy. George agrees that stress accrued over decades of self-denial, of begging publishers for money she was owed, likely contributed to Butler’s ill health and death at age 58 in 2006. In 1995, Butler became the first science-fiction author to be awarded a MacArthur Foundation “genius” grant, but she felt conflicted about the “sci-fi” designation; she preferred the shorthand “SF,” which covered both science fiction and speculative fiction. In a note George records in the book, Butler wrote, “The way most people think of SF: unreal, silly, or juvenile. (It can be all three.)” George subsequently observes: “The best science fiction, she knew, was a literature of transformative ideas. It was a genre that was powerful enough to rearrange her point of view, to change the way she saw herself: what if the world was turned to a different slant, what if she had more power, what if?” Through writing, Butler could chart her own “personal map towards freedom” and inch closer to “a more nuanced and inclusive future.” Over the phone, George cites one of the numerous questions Butler puzzled over while writing “Kindred:” “‘What if history were a planet?’ It’s a place to be. Even going back in time, history can be a planet. [She’s] creating landscape and characters and planting them there and moving them around. … Since she’s the maker in this, she can choose whose point of view; that’s also what’s thrilling about it. She has created all these strong women who are curious and courageous and also fearful, because Butler was also struggling with finding her own agency, and you see that in some of the characters.” With her profound need to write, Butler was clearly invested in the telling of her stories. It’s equally true that, with prescient novels like 1987’s “Dawn” and especially 1993’s “Parable of the Sower” and 1998’s “Parable of the Talents”—both set against scenes of environmental devastation that now read like our daily reality—Butler strived to transform readers’ thinking about climate, race, gender, and societal breakdown. Interviewers and fans often said her books predicted environmental and political change, but she insisted she wasn’t prophetic; she was just paying attention. “She was interested in climate really early — through the 1970s and ’80s she was reading about climate, clipping [articles] about climate,” George says, discussing the “walking notebooks” Butler carried during regular jaunts up Lake Avenue and around Altadena and Pasadena neighborhoods. “She would start paying attention to cycles of growth, of plants and flowers and trees and all the subtle, gentle changes … that slipped into her work. … “We see her like that imposing, serious figure … the other view is all this mythology that has grown up around her. But really, she was a real person with fears and doubt but also joy and curiosity. That was the great thing for me about working in the archive — getting to know this other person that you wouldn’t have gotten to know, really, unless you were her friend or family member.” Butler, a self-described “news junkie,” joked about being a hermit in the middle of Los Angeles; she had to diligently seal herself off from distractions to work. How might she have responded to an internet-connected world of 24/7 news cycles? “She would be doomscrolling with us, probably,” George jokes. “Or maybe deriving ideas.” n To learn more, visit octaviabutler.com, lynellgeorge.com and angelcitypress.com.

Retirement Project GLENDALE AUTHOR TIM WAHL INTRODUCES FOOTBALL TO NON-NATIVE SPEAKERS BY MORGAN COLE

G

lendale author Tim Wahl is bringing together his two loves—English as a Second Language and football—for his new book, “Footballogy: Elements of American Football for Non-Native Speakers of English” includes readings, illustrations, puzzles and self-assessments that guide readers to learn the story of football’s history and traditions as well as how the game is played. Wahl, who just retired from a 32-year career in adult education with the Los Angeles Unified School District, taught ESL to people from all around the world. After years of researching American football being played in other countries, Wahl decided to use is retirement to write this book. The book is written for people who are learning English and want to discover more about American culture. It can be used in classrooms as a means of learning the English language or for individual preference. Hailing from Upstate New York, Wahl earned a bachelor’s degree at the University of Iowa and his master’s degree at the University of Phoenix before moving to LA and teaching junior high school. Wahl said he didn’t know what ESL was before he started teaching it. While working as a junior high school teacher, Wahl said he was advised to teach ESL to adults because they believed it was the greatest job. “I got into it purely by accident,” Wahl said. In the beginning, Wahl taught ESL to adults at night in Chinatown as a part-time job and continued his day job teaching kids. Wahl said he enjoyed it so much that he made it his full-time job and ended up teaching adult education for 32 years. Wahl is hoping to expand the works of “Footballogy” to workshops on American football in other countries. The problem, according to Wahl, is that he doesn’t have name recognition. “I’m not somebody who played in the NFL,” Wahl said. His book, “Footballogy: Elements of American Football for Non-Native Speakers of English,” is available at online retailers as well as available for discounted bulk orders through eslpublishing.com. n
