H
urrah! I’m beeping my car horn, banging the pots and pans, popping corks of bubbly beverages—in my heart, anyway. And I also want to throw up, which is also a normal reaction. Adrenaline is not a tummy-comfort chemical. For many of us, the sheer relief of having lived under fight, freeze or flight for four years is enough to release all sorts of biochemicals. Of course, I called my sister in Rapid City, South Dakota, right away. “Hello, Mary? Woo-hoo!!! Aren’t you excited?” I yelled. “Hi, what’s happening?” “We won, we won, we won!” “What? You mean, he’s gotta leave?” “Yes!” Before this, I don’t think my sister Mary has ever told me that a phone call from me made her day. South Dakota is a Drumpf state, and my sister is one of the invisible progressives that live there. She’s not the only liberal in the region: I have plenty of progressive family and friends in North and South Dakota. I have such fond memories of growing up there, yet I also realized at a very early age that I would not be able to stay much longer. As faithful readers of this column know, I have too big a mouth—one that can sometimes get me in trouble with conservatives. To survive in the Dakotas, I would have to accept being profoundly uncomfortable on a daily basis—or drunk—to stand it. I’ve seen the dark underbelly of the Plains States. When President Kennedy was murdered, there were kids on my playground jumping up and down, chanting, “They shot him, they shot, they shot him. He’s a Catholic, and we hate him.” Those kids didn’t conjure hatred like that out of thin air. They were obviously bitten by their family’s snake-like vitriol and injected with bigot poison. Don’t Tread on Me, my ass. You’ve treaded on us for years—go back to your burrows! After my texting and phone calls to loved ones, I “Joyscrolled” through Facebook, and I could see that my friends were doing the same. What a welcome antidote to “doomscrolling!” My gay married friends, my Black, Native American and Hispanic loved ones are shedding years of angst and worry in a matter of minutes. As a counterpoint, I peeked at the pages of some of my friends who are, to put it politely, wackos. They actually believe that Dr. Fauci, Bill Gates and the W.H.O. are in cahoots to implant us with tracking devices. Yes, I know and love these people, even though they have bizarre world views. However, I was happily surprised by my ardent Drumpfsupporting friend, who said she welcomes the new president with open arms. I can understand how some of these people came to their skewed version of reality. I had the gag-inducing experience of watching some of the Drumpf campaign’s nonstop “ads” about Biden, which also trotted out the tried-and-true bugaboo of socialism. While taking a long, cleansing bath afterward, I realized that, if I had the level of noneducation that some of the people I knew in South Dakota had, I would be terrified of the Biden/Harris ticket. And seriously, folks, my
friends are not racists; they have been ceaselessly beat over the head by propaganda masquerading as “real news” that is designed to scare the Bejesus out of them. Oh, and don’t get me started on the Bejesus folks who are theocracy minded. I’m not against God, although I am against the destruction of the separation of church and state. Since the news broke worldwide, I’ve been in contact with friends in Pakistan, Israel, Germany and Norway who are all doing cartwheels. A dear friend in Heidelberg emailed to tell me that people are out on the streets celebrating. Global alliances, we’re coming home! The globe (and the environment) just exhaled. As Americans, it is easy to be obsessed with our politics and not realize its impact on other countries. I got a potent reminder of that in 2008, when my husband and I were on our honeymoon in Oslo, Norway. It was right after Barack Obama’s victory over W., and everywhere we went, people— recognizing us as being obviously American—rushed up to us and asked, “aren’t you excited?! What was it like watching it happen? We are so happy for you!” On the flipside, we were in Pakistan in 2016 right after Drumpf’s victory, and the doleful look of “how could you let this happen?” on people’s faces was unmistakable. Taking a cue from my open-armed friend, I will do my best to not pigeonhole people who supported Drumpf. I was raised that well-mannered people do not speak openly about religion or politics. But that’s not going to stop me from banging my pots and pans, dancing, and honking my horn while I run errands in Altadena! n Ellen Snortland has written “Consider This…” for a heckuva long time, and she also coaches first-time book authors! here are you headed? What opportunities are on your horizon? After months of dealing with a pandemic from which few of us have escaped untouched, an optimistic visualization of the future may be difficult to grasp and hold onto. But hold on—the future will happen. Recently, the Gold Line Construction Authority has been working on a series of preliminary projects to complete Phase 2 of the Foothill Extension of the Metro Gold Line from Azusa to Pomona. With many institutions of higher education already in close proximity to a Gold Line station, such as Citrus College and PCC, and many more that will be accessible in the future, such as the Claremont Dr. Edward C. Ortell, left, Citrus College Governing Board Colleges, the light rail’s monimember and Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti at the Metro ker as the “Brain Train” is well Gold Line Extension Phase 2 groundbreaking, December 2016 (Special to Pasadena Weekly) deserved. But you don’t have to wait for years to get started on your educational goals. Colleges and universities close to existing Gold Line stations are currently serving students online. Once they reopen, students will find them easily accessible. The future will be here before we know it, and that future of freedom, travel and good times would seem much brighter with a diploma or certificate in hand. Check out the possibilities. Where are you headed? n

REP. CHU NOMINATED TO ASIAN HALL OF FAME
THE FIRST CHINESE AMERICAN WOMAN ELECTED TO CONGRESS JOINS CELEBRITIES IN THE 16TH CELEBRATION BY MATTHEW RODRIGUEZ
O
n November 21, the Asian Hall of Fame honors Rep. Judy Chu after a landslide victory in her recent reelection campaign. “I am very gratified that I got voted back in with an overwhelming number of votes,” Chu said. “That was certainly, on a personal level, very gratifying. On top of this I was nominated to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, so that is just icing on the cake.” After becoming the first Chinese American woman elected to Congress in 2009, Chu has continued to serve the 27th Congressional district. She has also brought to light many issues affecting Asian American and Pacific Islanders as chairwoman of the Congressional Asian Pacific Islander Caucus. While her political career has soared to serving on the venerable House Ways and Means Committee and the ever-important House Small Business Committee, Chu began her political career on the Board of Education for the Garvey School District in Rosemead in 1985. A staunch academic, earning her Ph.D. from the California School of Psychology in 1979, she began her post-college career as a professor. After teaching in the Los Angeles Community College District for 20 years, Chu was recruited to run for the school board position because of her education experience. “Even then I never really imagined I would run for office,” Chu said. “I think I started becoming even more deeply involved when this ugly, antiimmigrant, English-only movement happened in Monterey Park.” While Chu was still getting the taste for political office she heard about this anti-immigrant movement in Monterey Park, the city her and her husband has lived in for over 30 years. The movement aimed to marginalize the predominately Asian community. “A vocal group of longtime residents resented the new immigrants moving in and wanted English-only for the signs in the city and Englishonly books in the library,” Chu said. “The last straw was when they got a resolution in the City council saying that only English should be spoken in the city.” The resolution passed. Disturbed by the ordinance, Chu joined a “multiethnic coalition” to overturn the ordinance and succeeded. “It became apparent that the city council did not represent the city,” Chu said. “So, I ran for city council and won.” She stayed in Monterrey Park’s City Council for 13 years, serving three terms as mayor. “I served there for 13 years working to bring people together,” she said. “That was the foundation that gave me the ability to run for the California State Assembly and then to the California Board of Equalization.” Chu initially ran for the state legislature in 1994 but lost to Assemblywoman Diane Martinez in the Democratic primary. She again lost in 1998 to Gloria Romero but Chu eventually filled her seat after Romero was elected to the state senate in 2001. In the eight years before being elected to her Congress seat, she was elected to California’s tax board, the State Board of Equalization. In a political career that lasts almost four decades, she continues the tiring grind to make sure her constituents are taken care of and represented. “I am so gratified when we do get a victory, when we provide relief to the people,” Chu said. Recently, she helped pass the COVID-19 relief bills helping businesses, families and workers. While she is happy to help her constituents, she continues to work for the
advancement of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs). “We had tremendous success in getting more AAPIs involved in the political system,” Chu said. “Right now, we have 20 Asian Pacific Islanders elected to Congress, which is the highest number we’ve had in history. I am proud of that because there was a time when we were completely invisible up there on Capitol Hill.” While she recognizes the achievements made on Capitol Hill, Chu hopes that more AAPIs are elected to local and state governments. “We need to make sure that there are more AAPIs that are being elected to all kinds of positions from the local to the state and to the federal level,” Chu said. “Once we have more that are visible and raising their voices, it will encourage others to do so as well because they can see it can be done; that you can run for office and be elected.” n 11.12.20 | PASADENA WEEKLY 7
SUPERVISORS FUND COUNCIL EXTENDS FOOD PASADENA HOPE CENTER INSECURITY PLANS MONEY WILL GO TOWARD SUBSIDIZED HOUSING PROJECT
PROGRAMS SUCH AS GREAT PLATES COST THE CITY $466K A MONTH
BY MATTHEW RODRIGUEZ
L
ast week the Salvation Army received $378,000 to create the new permanent supportive housing project dubbed the Pasadena Hope Center. The four-story building will provide 65 studio apartments of subsidized housing for individuals experiencing homelessness in the region. The first floor will be used for supportive services such as a food pantry and Salvation Army social services offices. “It was initially a much smaller project,” said Salvation Army: Pasadena director of social services Jhoana Hirasuna. “The initial idea was to redo this building and make it a choice pantry and be more efficient in how we’re able to serve our community.” As described by Hirasuna, the current Salvation Army food pantry in Pasadena is a very old office building that was never intended to serve as a food pantry. When the idea to reconstruct a new building started manifesting, the Salvation Army began consulting with city officials. After speaking with Mayor Terry Tornek and Director of Housing Bill Huang, the charitable organization decided to help the city raise its affordable housing stock to help combat the homelessness issue growing in Pasadena. According to Robin Dunn, a divisional director at the Salvation Army, the cost of the building actually went down from $10 million to $3.7 million due to government funding and other tax breaks, but that was not the reason why they decided to go forward with this project. “The Salvation army was started in 1865 in London, England with the goal of helping people who were down and out,” said Capt. Terry Masango of the Pasadena Tabernacle Corps, the leadership body of the Salvation Army. “Back then they used to say soup, soap and salvation.” While Masango refers to the old motto of “soup, soap and salvation”, the Salvation Army still stays true to its mission helping over 23 million Americans annually. “We want to provide affordable housing for people,” said Masango. “It’s not a shelter, it’s not a transitional bridge house. We are not going to say after two years, you must leave because we are trying to provide a permanent solution to the problem of homelessness.” According to a 2019 poll by the Los Angeles Times and the Los Angeles Business Council Institute, about a third of respondents said they have experienced homelessness or housing insecurity or knew someone who has. Housing insecurity is defined as an individual paying more than 30% of their income toward rent. If they pay 50% of their income toward rent then they are defined as being severely cost-burdened by their housing. The residents of the Pasadena Hope Center will pay only 30% of their income towards rent. The project follows the “housing first” model of solving homelessness. With the belief that housing will help create a platform to improve one’s life, the Salvation Army hopes to not only provide housing but social services, hence the food pantry and offices on the first floor. “The wraparound services, the case management and making sure that they’re getting connected to other resources are vital to ensuring their success.” n
8 PASADENA WEEKLY | 11.12.20
BY MATTHEW RODRIGUEZ
O
n Monday, while acknowledging the high costs, Pasadena City Council voted to combat the food insecurity affecting residents by extending the funding of food banks and the Great Plates program. “We need to ensure that people have the food that they need,’’ Mayor-Elect Victor Gordo said about the Great Plates program. “We need to start thinking through how some of these restaurants begin their own transition so that they’re not reliant on city dollars that the city may need.’’ According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), food insecurity is expected to steadily increase for households across the nation. In order to help residents, the city council unanimously extended the funding of the food banks and the Great Plates Delivered program which cost will the city an estimated $2 million. The food banks are the cheaper of the two programs with the city appropriating $206,200 to pay for the food pantries and meal programs until January 31. Great Plates would cost the city about $430,000 to pay for October to November and would cost the city about $466,000 monthly until February 7. According to the city, the program has already cost the city over $2.2 million. The city may be reimbursed for these costs through FEMA, however, the timeline for reimbursement is undetermined. Councilmembers were concerned about the immense cost of the Great Plates program which has been active since May and affects a relatively small amount of people. Twenty-one local restaurants prepare and deliver three meals a day to 235 seniors. “I think this was a very innovative idea to try and support restaurants and at the same time seniors who need food,” said Councilwoman Margaret McAustin. “But the cost of $466,000 a month is just enormous.” The city hopes to have other options available by February 7 when the funding expires. One option suggested was to begin the transition after the city receives $1.22 million from the Department of Housing and Urban Development in midJanuary. Los Angeles County runs a similar program, but city officials raised concerns about the loss of income for the 21 Pasadena restaurants. “We don’t know how long the waitlist is,” said Brenda E. Harvey-Williams, director of Parks, Recreation and Community Services. She submitted the report. “We don’t know if (Pasadena restaurants) would ever get utilized by the county under the current configuration.” If the city decides to halt the funding after February 7 and LA County does not utilize the Pasadena restaurants, the transition would risk the jobs of over 100 rehired employees and may close the three restaurants that recently reopened. Councilman Andy Wilson expressed his concerns about retracting this “lifeline for many of these restaurants” citing that while it only feeds 235 people it allows restaurants to stay open through the COVID-19 restrictions. “I do think this is a very expensive program when you look at it from a feeding perspective, but I think that’s not the goal of this program,” he said. n
ARCADIA SCHOOLS NAMED A TOP DISTRICT IN U.S. BY JULIA SHAPERO
A
rcadia Unified School District is among the top 1% best school districts in America, according to school and neighborhood review website Niche. Niche recently released its 2021 Best School District Rankings, with Arcadia Unified receiving distinctions at the national, state and city levels. Arcadia Unified was also among the top eight best school districts in California and top three best school districts in Los Angeles, according to a district official. “For me, and I know I can speak on behalf of our board and our team, it is a wonderful validation of something that I think is kind of unique to Arcadia,” said Superintendent Dr. David Vannasdall. “From the boardroom to the classroom, we have a deep commitment to living out our shared values every day, in everything we do.” The district uses culture audits, in addition to looking at test scores and surveys, Vannasdall said. He added this practice is fairly unique for a school district. “We have an outside organization, in our case it’s UCSD, some professors that come in, and researchers, and they examine us, explore, do interviews, survey and find out ‘Do we do what we say we do?’” Vannasdall said. “And are we living out our values?’ He added these audits allow the district to figure out the best areas to put money, time and resources and continue to improve. Ryan Foran, chief communications officer for Arcadia Unified, said over the past couple years, the district has also been focusing on providing students with emotional support. The district has added four to five full-time counselors in recent years and now has a full-time counselor in every school, Foran said. He added the district had also opened wellness centers on its campuses. Arcadia Unified is providing services, such as webinars, to parents, who are particularly stressed due to the pandemic. “I just think that it’s been great to see so much support for students and staff and our parents,” Foran said. “We put a lot of resources into that and the benefits have just been great so far.” Vannasdall added that while the distinction is a wonderful validation of the district’s work, it is going to be a challenge to maintain. “You don’t just get to rest and say, ‘Well, what we’re doing is working so that’s going to work next year,’” he said. “Things are changing, our students are changing, our parents are changing, and we have to continuously ask the right questions, and be willing to be open to reflect on what we’re doing, what’s working, what’s not and improve.” One of the areas the district hopes to continue to improve upon is equity, Vannasdall said. He added that they hope to dive deeper into equity and bias training to examine institutionalized racism. “That’s just an area right now that so many of us are grappling with, and not just in schools, but in society,” Vannasdall said. “And so we feel a responsibility (because) we have the ability to have those conversations and to grow in that area as an organization.” n

iana Leos-Ralph reflects on her late father, Fidel Leos, the owner and operator of the locally beloved Los Tacos on California Boulevard. “He basically lived the American dream,” she said. “He came here as a young immigrant and hustled. He always worked, and we were very fortunate. His hard work gave us a lot of opportunity.” Fidel died on September 24 at age 69 due to complications caused by COVID-19. If you are unfamiliar with Los Tacos, you’re new in town. A favorite of Pasadena Weekly readers, Los Tacos has landed the “Reader Recommended” award for “Best Taco” in a town with some real competition. When Fidel Leos opened Los Tacos in February 1986, he was introducing Pasadena and the rest of the San Gabriel Valley to the soft-shell street-style taco, now all but the signature dish of greater Los Angeles. The living legacy of Fidel, Los Tacos is the granddaddy of taquerias in Pasadena and the SGV. The local enthusiasm for Los Tacos is genuine. On a recent visit, Linda Goluskin of Pasadena gushed, “I’ve been coming here for years. It’s authentic. You can’t go wrong here. Everything is wonderful (and) the staff is always in a great mood. “I’m so sorry to hear of (Fidel’s) passing.” Fidel was born in Fresnillo, Zacatecas, Mexico, on April 24, 1951. His family moved to Tijuana, when Fidel was 2 years old and then immigrated to Pasadena when he was 13. He attended McKinley Junior and Blair high schools. A gifted athlete, he was offered a full athletic scholarship to play soccer at UCLA but turned it down to support his extended family. He eventually completed his education at PCC and Cal State LA. While in high school, Fidel began working as a busboy at the former Pepper Mill restaurant on Walnut, where he met Bill Maldonado, who was the restaurant’s pianist. “Bill Maldonado had a dream to open his own place, which he did,” said Fidel’s widow, Martha Leos. “When the Pepper Mill closed, Fidel said all he wanted to do was go to school full time but Bill persuaded him to start as a cocktail boy. Maldonado’s evolved into a five-star restaurant.” Fidel also quickly evolved to become the maître d’ and sommelier at the fabled local fine-dining fixture on Green Street, which closed in 1994. “Fidel always had a dream of owning his own business,” Martha said. “When I met him, he had over $100,000 saved to open his own business.” Instead, the couple married in 1980 after Fidel used his savings to purchase a home in Arcadia, where they began to raise their family. Diana was born in 1982 followed by her sister, Audrey, in 1985, the same year he announced to Martha, “I’ve found a location!” The small storefront facing the parking lot on California Boulevard was only half the present size. The restaurant’s current dining room was a travel agency, when Fidel opened Los Tacos in February 1986. By the way, though the indoor dining area is closed because of pandemic restrictions, there are a number of distanced tables along the shady sidewalk, in front of the restaurant. Fidel worked at Los Tacos during the day and at Maldonado’s in the evening, while Martha worked as a teacher and Los Tacos. By the time their third daughter, Amy, was born in 1990, Fidel moved the family from Arcadia to Pasadena and two years later left Maldonado’s to grow Los Tacos. In addition to expanding the Los Tacos dining room, a second location in San Gabriel opened on Los Tunas Boulevard in 1999 and quickly became the go-to hangout for teens from nearby San Marino High School. This second location closed in 2017, in the wake of proposed real estate development of the property. In the meantime, Fidel avidly supported local youth athletics, regularly coaching, while serving on the board of directors for Pasadena Little League and South Pasadena AYSO soccer. He also routinely donated funds to Blair and Marshall high schools. He encouraged his daughters to volunteer. When Diana was in high school and announced her intention to seek part-time employment at the local Abercrombie & Fitch, Fidel had other ideas. “My dad (said), ‘No your job is to study and get good grades,” Leos-Ralph recalled. “I provide you with everything you need and want. You should give back to the

community, so you should volunteer your time to help others.” Martha added, “He was always very big on the girls volunteering in the community.” Given the character and profile of their late boss—not surprisingly –the staff of 12 at Los Tacos is unusually loyal. Many of them have worked there for years. The original chef Cruz Castanera only recently retired, having helmed the stoves at Los Tacos for 30 years. He still stops by to ensure the consistent quality that helps define the operation and the food. When the pandemic lockdown arrived, no employees were laid off, though some shifts were modified. As Martha asserted, “(Initially) our sales did drop. People were leery (but) we never cut any employees.” That said, their otherwise robust catering business has all but vanished in the pandemic. In late August, Fidel showed signs of fatigue and was hospitalized with COVID-19 complications on September 2. Despite the prayers of the community, the original all-star taquero died on September 24. For a moment, the future of Los Tacos seemed uncertain. “We just want to convey to our Pasadena community that we are not going to allow everything that Fidel worked so hard for to just stop,” Martha said. Leos-Ralph has assumed the role of CEO working closely with manager Margarita Silva. “We are very grateful to our Los Tacos family, our employees and to our community for their support,” Leos-Ralph said. “It’s like my dad did—put one foot in front of the other and do good.” 11.12.20 | PASADENA WEEKLY 11

ROSE BOWL TURKEY TROT IS CARRYING ON IN NEW WAY

espite COVID-19, the third annual Rose Bowl Turkey Trot is forging on in a new way. The virtual event begins at 6 a.m. Wednesday, November 25, and wraps on Friday, November 27. Participants have the freedom to race off the beaten path, choosing their own course from the safety of their own neighborhoods. Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for children. Participants will receive a virtual goodie bag, which includes a bib to print from home and custom photo borders. Area residents are thankful for the spirit of athletic competition and community. “As a family, Kate, Elisa, Lindsey, and my husband, Lee, we are excited to take on this virtual Turkey Trot 2020 challenge,” said Corina Burns of Glendora. “I recently finished the Malibu to Tahoe 700 virtual bike miles. I’m very proud of myself.” For this Turkey Trot, the participants have a unique goal—to preserve and protect the splendor of America’s Stadium, the Rose Bowl. “In light of the COVID-19 financial challenges the Rose Bowl Stadium is facing, this year all entry fees to the third annual Rose Bowl Turkey Trot will be a direct tax-deductible donation to the Rose Bowl Legacy Foundation’s America’s Stadium Needs America Campaign,” said Dedan Brozino, Rose Bowl Stadium chief development officer. “As the 501(c)(3) nonprofit that preserves, protects and enhances America’s Stadium as a National Historic Landmark, all participants in the Turkey Trot will be impacting a global icon that has been so incredibly important to our community over the past 98 years.” Unfortunately, due to the global pandemic the cancelation of a thriving concert season, hundreds of events and UCLA football having no fans in attendance means the Rose Bowl has suffered a loss of $15 million. Runners are encouraged to download the RaceJoy app at racejoy.net to monitor their pace. They will have the opportunity to donate to Union Station Homeless Services to help feed the hungry. he Pasadena Tournament of Roses will partner with six broadcasters to air a two-hour TV entertainment special on New Year’s Day. The show will air during the time slot traditionally reserved for live coverage of the Rose Parade, presented by Honda. The TV special—“The Rose Parade’s New Year Celebration presented by Honda”—will feature a reimagined New Year celebration, including live-to-tape musical and marching band performances, heartwarming segments related to the Rose Parade, celebrity guest appearances, special Rose Bowl Game football highlights, equestrians, spectacular floats from years past and a behind-the-scenes look into the making of a float. “We are beyond excited about the upcoming New Year’s Day television special and the unique opportunity it gives us to not only entertain our worldwide audience in new and dynamic ways, but also honor the Rose Parade’s 130-year tradition,” said David Eads, executive director and CEO of the Tournament of Roses. “Each year, tens of millions across America and around the world invite us into their homes to celebrate the New Year, and this year will be no different. We may not be able to make our typical 5.5-mile march, but we are hosting a spectacular celebration nonetheless.” For this unprecedented TV special, the Tournament of Roses is proud to partner with Feeding America, the nation’s largest organization dedicated to fighting domestic hunger through a nationwide network of food banks. “Food insecurity has been a focus of our organization’s efforts during the pandemic, so it was only fitting that we extend our commitment to our re-imagined New Year Celebration,” said Bob Miller, president of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association. “We are proud to work with Feeding America, an organization that is working to change lives in communities across the country.” Claire Babineaux-Fontenot, CEO of Feeding America, added, “Food banks are feeding an average of 60% more people due to the economic fallout of the pandemic. “We are deeply grateful to the Tournament of Roses for helping to raise awareness and support for people facing hunger. Their generosity will help provide much needed meals for our most vulnerable neighbors.” The entertainment special will also showcase seniors in high school and colleges from bands across the country, who will come together for a special, virtual performance of “Everything’s Coming up Roses,” led by a surprise conductor. “While we have invited all the bands who were scheduled to perform in this year’s parade to instead join us for the 2022 Rose Parade, we realize that there are many seniors who will graduate before that. We didn’t want them to miss out on this opportunity, so we’re giving them their very own, unique performance spotlight,” said Bob Miller, president of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association. This year’s TV special will air on ABC, Hallmark Channel, KTLA, NBC, RFD-TV and Univision at 8 a.m. January 1. Details including the performance lineup, entertainment segments and celebrity appearances, will be announced soon. Talent will be filmed from various states and cities throughout the country, including Pasadena. Any new footage filmed for the special meets COVID safety protocols outlined by the state of California and the Pasadena Health Department. “The Rose Parade is a long-standing and central part of our New Year celebrations—not only here in Pasadena, but also around the world—and we are delighted that tradition will continue this year in a new, reimagined way. We are excited to see how it comes to life on TV this year,” said Pasadena Mayor Terry Tornek. n

VERDI CHORUS TO STREAM SPANISH LOVE SONGS IN FIRST OF THREE MUSICAL SOIREES BY BRIDGETTE REDMAN n the face of a drought of live musical performances, the Verdi Chorus’ Artistic Director Anne Marie Ketchum has summoned the love stories of Spain to sate the thirst of audiences from Santa Monica to Pasadena and beyond. Amidst a pandemic in which singing is one of the more dangerous activities people can do together, Ketchum is directing an online series of musical soirees, starting with a dalliance in Spain with “Amor y Odio, Songs of Spain and the New World.” This first concert in a series is dedicated to the songs and Spain’s zarzuelas, a performance that’s similar to musical theater with a mixture of spoken and sung text. To make the concerts safely work, she is calling upon the Fox Singers, a group of young professionals who make up the section leaders of the chorus. There are 15 members in the ensemble and six of them will rotate performing in each of the three planned hour-long concerts. The series has been dubbed “Verdi Chorus Presents.” “We will really get focused and show off who they are and their personal artistry,” Ketchum said. The Verdi Chorus was founded in 1983 under Ketchum’s direction. Before the pandemic, they held two to four concerts a year focusing on grand opera choruses. The chorus provides opportunity for talented amateur singers to perform side-by-side with professional singers. The chorus started its life at the Verdi Restaurant, but when the restaurant closed in 1991, they continued, eventually gaining nonprofit status. It has a repertoire of more than 300 choruses from 81 operas in seven languages. Ketchum’s starting with Spain because she has had a long-running love of Spanish song. She jokes about how her first boyfriend was a Latino and she married a Cuban, so the music of Spain is in her blood. “I’ve always sung songs in Spanish and loved it,” Ketchum said. “There is really just something about the passion that this music shows. I call it ‘Amor y Odio’—love and hate. The passions are there—they don’t mince words. (The songs) are just kind of out there. Some are fun and happy; some are a little spicy.” The singers will gather one at a time in a recording studio with a pianist safely distanced. A Grammy-winning recording artist will record each of them singing their parts. Even the two singing a duet will record their parts separately. The concert premiered online on November 8 and is available still. Ketchum hopes these concerts will be an antidote to the discord that society is experiencing with people feeling lost, angry, alone and stuck in their houses. “Music has always been a healing thing,” Ketchum said. “Being together and making music and going to hearing music is something we all need and humanity has needed for all the many centuries we’ve been on this world. We can’t be together right now, but we can simulate it. We’re trying to do that as much as we can, find this healing quality, find a way to get out of the ugliness of this day and remember who we are basically as human beings.” Ketchum has led the chorus through many changes over its 35-plus-year history and the pandemic is just the latest, though it brings challenges unlike those faced in the past. Ketchum said it is doable by staying flexible. “If you are an artist or musician, you have to be flexible first of all, all through your life,” Ketchum said. “Life hands you all kinds of things. This year is absolutely insane. Many challenges you face just by being who you are. I love to make music. I love to get other people to make music. Now we just have to work a little harder to make that happen. The basic goal is the same—the art form and the beauty—let’s figure out how to get it out there and make it happen.” The Fox Singers are all vocalists Ketchum—who created the opera program at Pasadena City College and taught on the voice faculty for 34 years—has personally auditioned and chosen because they are career minded. She said that, like many people in the performing arts, their careers have just stopped because of the pandemic. She recognizes many young singers forced

to take a year off will end up leaving the profession and doing something else. She’s hoping that these concerts—for which the singers will all be paid—will help them stay on track. The ensemble was named in memory of long-time chorus and board member, Walter Fox. They serve as section leaders, rehearsal coaches and featured singers. While the concert is free to view, audience members are invited to make donations to the artist fund that the Verdi Chorus has set up. “We’ve had some wonderful donations and people are being generous,” Ketchum said. The Fox Singers participating in “Amor y Odio” are: • Sarah Salazar, soprano Anne Marie Ketchum created the opera program at Pasa• Tiffany Ho, soprano dena City College and taught on the voice faculty for 34 • Elias Berezin, tenor years. (Special to Pasadena Weekly) • Joseph Gárate, tenor • Esteban Rivas, lyric bass • Judy Tran, mezzo soprano All of the members of the Fox Singers, Ketchum said, have voices that can handle the operatic repertoire, can lead a section of people of all ages, have highquality musicianship and have personalities that mesh with hers. “Each one of these singers is enthusiastically working on this music and I’m so happy about that,” Ketchum said. Salazar and Ho sing a duet and trade off in a collection of nine songs in a set. Berezin is a tenor who started out as a baritone. He closes the program with a famous piece about a city in Spain that was written by a Mexican composer. Gárate, whom Ketchum describes as an absolutely romantic, charming and marvelous high tenor, is singing a set of passionate arias. Rivas sings a song taken from Spanish pop, a sweet love song by Maria Grever. Tran will accompany herself on piano and singing a set of Afro-Cuban songs. “Amor y Odio” will be the first of three concerts. The next one will be Italian songs and will come out around the beginning of the year. The third one will be a concert of American art songs that will likely include classic musical theater such as Rodgers and Hammerstein and other songs possibly going back to the 1920s and ’30s. “I think we all need a little more music in our lives right now,” Ketchum said. “Let’s get back to who we really are and what we’re really all about and get away from all of the conflict for a while and into some beauty, into some humanity and art.” n 11.12.20 | PASADENA WEEKLY 13

RESISTANCE REVIVAL CHORUS, This Joy (Righteous Babe): HHHH
A spirit-lifting antidote to 2020 from a New York-based collective of 70 women and nonbinary touring musicians, Broadway and recording artists, filmmakers and activists (plus guest turns by Rhiannon Giddens, Valerie June and Deva Mahal). Since joining forces after the 2017 Women’s March, they’ve raised their voices at numerous social justice protests, and the sparkling production and performances of this 14-track debut honors their convictions and roof-raising vocal solos. Highlights: “Ella’s Song,” a fervent reading of Elton John’s “Border Song,” and gospel hand-clappers “Everybody Deserves to Be Free,” “Reason I Sing” and “Woke Up This Morning (With My Mind Stayed on Freedom).” resistancerevivalchorus.com
BEN HARPER, Winter Is for Lovers (Anti-): HHH½
The veteran rocker’s first instrumental album is a contemplative memory dream that intentionally evokes roots legends and friends such as the late Chris Darrow, John Fahey and Taj Mahal, among the many artists who frequented his family’s Folk Music Store in Claremont during Harper’s childhood. Performed entirely on his lap steel, there’s a cinematic quality to the 15 tracks, all named after places— “Joshua Tree,” “Inland Empire,” a grieving “Toronto” and hopeful “Paris”—that suggests a tenderly cathartic travelogue through time, perhaps before logging more miles on future roads. benharper.com
THELONIOUS MONSTER, Oh the Monster (Immediate Family): HHH
Part of a long parade of LA-formed ’80s bands that enjoy cult status, the once notoriously inebriated rockers were never prolific, and in the 16-year silence following “California Clam Chowder” a return didn’t seem likely. Surprise. Ringing with Dix Denny and Chris Handsome’s angry guitars, “Buy Another Gun” spells out one motivation for reconvening; the election’s another, along with a desire to make peace with old ghosts. Kicking off with death-fixated punk-rocker “Disappear,” frontman Bob Forrest still sounds righteously pissed off but ultimately less haunted than hopeful. Highlights: “Teenage Wasteland,” “LA Divorce,” “Sixteen Angels.” theloniousmonster.bandcamp.com
SAM MORROW, Gettin’ By on Gettin’ Down (Forty Below): HHH
Morrow follows 2018’s buzz-generating “Concrete and Mud” with a punchier, open-hearted set that grooves happily in Little Feat’s old ’hood. Once again co-producing with Eric Corne, the LA songwriter’s backed by longtime bandmates—notably drummer Matt Tecu and guitarists Eamon Ryland and Eli Wulfmeir—who helped make his shows must-sees for local audiences. Morrow’s old-soul howl offers medicinal comfort as the rockers drive a little harder (“Money Ain’t a Thing”), grooves drip more grease (“Make ’Em Miss Me”), and the swamp gets funkier (“Round ‘n’ Round”). Turn it up. sammorrowmusic.com

RAYE ZARAGOZA, Woman in Color (Rebel River): HHH
Teamed with producer Tucker Martine, the Long Beach-based songwriter’s sophomore full-length champions feminism and Mother Earth with greater polish and rhythmic variety than 2017’s more overtly protest-oriented “Fight for You.” Standout tracks such as haunting single “Red” and “Run With the Wolves,” whose natural verse imagery builds to an insistent choral hook, make Zaragoza’s points with poetic language and sophisticated melodies, while the harmonica-gilded “They Say” delivers a velvet-gloved punch to cultural snobs and the one percent (“If they say that folk music’s for the elite/ Well then who’s gonna sing for me?”). rayezaragoza.com
HONEY MADE, Brand New (self-released): HHHH
A feel-good antidote to anxiety blues from the Austin funk-soul party band. Produced by Los Lobos keyboardist/saxophonist Steve Berlin, their first full-length studio album radiates vitality as it celebrates everyday pleasures—“good music, good people, your family alive,” as frontman Willie Barnes II reminds during upbeat closer “So Good.” Austin treasure Tamara Mack lends her gutsy vocals to standout tracks “Chicken Sweats” and “Be True,” while the horn-punched “Southern Fried Funk” and reggae-dipping “Smoove” issue tantalizing invitations to shake your hips and groove. honeymadeatx.com.
DEVIN B. THOMPSON, Tales of the Soul (Severn): HHH½
Opening with Bobby “Blue” Bland’s hit “Love to See You Smile,” the veteran Chicago musician wastes no time honoring soul forebears. Thompson’s own compositions reflect his taste for sleek ’70s-’80s-style arrangements, but his churchtrained vocals recall George Benson during a funky take on Little Milton’s “I’m Gonna Cry a River” and his treatment of Gamble & Huff’s “Something You Can Do Today,” reinforced with gospel harmonies, is another highlight, along with “Read Your Mind” (lit up by Robben Ford’s guitar solo) and funky antiracism anthem “Tell Me.” facebook.com/clbzero
ELVIS COSTELLO, Hey Clockface (Concord): HHHH
“Love is the one thing we can save,” Costello intones over Middle Eastern instrumentation during cinematic opener “Revolution #49,” before launching into the squalling tirade “No Flag” (“No sign for the dark place that I live/ No god for the damn that I don’t give”) and movingly sung ballad “They’re Not Laughing at Me Now.” It’s a bracing return from the complacency-defying rock veteran, who recorded mostly in Paris with longtime pianist Steve Nieve and made additional tracks in Helsinki and New York. That sense of motion informs the album. Continual rhythmic twists keep listeners off balance, not unlike chaotic times that inspired standouts such as “Newspaper Pane” (composed with trumpeter Michael Leonhart and guitarist Bill Frisell), “Hetty O’Hara Confidential” and the New Orleans-style title track, a cry to conscience that winds into Fats Waller’s “How Can You Face Me?” elviscostello.com
