O

PARENTING JUST GOT A LITTLE BIT EASIER

ur lame duck president is more like a “loose goose” these days. As of this writing, Drumpf has not formally conceded, which is not surprising as we knew he would not go gracefully. He told us as much. True to form, he seems hellbent on wreaking as much havoc as possible to the very end. Nonetheless, his loosey-goosey behavior doesn’t dampen our collective relief. You can hear “phew” from just about everywhere, especially from parents. Although I am not a parent—my sisters and I did not breed well in captivity—I have profuse empathy for parents and grandparents and what they have endured over the last four years, especially since March. A potent reminder of that recently surfaced on CNN. I was only vaguely aware of CNN commentator Van Jones before the Biden/Harris win. I had seen a few excerpts of his work and remembered him as an Obama confidante. It turns out we have a lot in common: we’re both commentators, lawyers and very relieved that the Drumpf regime will soon end. We’re also not afraid to show our emotions in public. Van really grabbed my heart hard and shook it, when on CNN Anderson Cooper asked Van what the Biden win meant to him. While answering, Van openly cried and kept crying while expressing the depth of his feelings of relief as a parent that Drumpf lost. My soul simultaneously cried and exulted with him. I’m a sucker for men who cry anyway. The men who dare to cry in front of others are expressing the opposite of toxic masculinity. Take a “gander” at the synonyms for the word toxic: “poisonous, deadly, lethal, harmful, pernicious, noxious, septic, pestilential, baneful, mephitic, mephitical, poison, poisonous, toxicant.” “Toxic” has become such a ubiquitous modifier of “masculinity” that we often lose what it really means. These toxic men are poisoning not only the planet but their families and the culture. In Drumpf’s case, he has literally been toxic, spreading COVID-19 with abandon all through the White House and Secret Service. Hazard pay, anyone? Anyway, back to Van Jones’ tears and his assertion that it’s easier to be a parent now because it’s now easier to show children that character does matter. A friend I initially met decades ago at Augustana Academy in Canton, South Dakota, recently messaged me on Facebook. I’ll call her Ingrid for this column. Her daughter’s name is Heather, and her granddaughter’s name is Allison. (Allison is 4 and more mature than Drumpf.) Ingrid couldn’t wait to tell me about an exchange she heard between Allison and Heather: Allison: So, who is the president? Heather: It’s going to be Joe Biden. Allison: Does he call people stupid? Heather: No, he does not.

Allison: Does he call people by their real names? Heather: Yes, he does, Allison: Will he call me, Allison? Heather Yes, he will. Ahhh. A breath of civility. Names are both a simple and profound thing. Dale Carnegie, the father of self-improvement, said, “Names are the sweetest and most important sound in any language.” The fact that Drumpf tried to normalize name calling is so emblematic of his personality that it’s mind-boggling. I am experiencing sweetness again without the specter of No. 45, causing me (and us) daily—if not hourly—outrage, anger and heartbreak. I now watch the sun outside my window and notice hummingbirds sipping there. I’ve seen birds splashing in our fountain and an occasional squirrel as well. My dog lies at my feet. I am aware of these things again, while also circumspect that I had stopped noticing them for a while. With a last name like Snortland, it’s easy to see why I defended myself a lot with “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me!” Not true. That was merely a bromide meant to minimize the pain of playground cruelty. To deal with the endless taunts, my third-grade teacher, Sonja Staley née Erickson, dealt with it head-on. Sonja personified the opposite of toxic masculinity. Her action was sheer nongendered, adult decency. After sending me on a “bogus” chore to the principal’s office, “Class, you have made Ellen cry, making fun of her last name. Please don’t do that,” she said. And it stopped. All it took was a loving adult to step in and take charge by taking some nontoxic action. I feel bad for the man who hurts inside so much that he spreads his hurt to others by taunting and bullying. But not bad enough to avoid celebrating his lame duckness. He may be lame, but he can’t fly away fast enough for me. n Correction: Sharper eyes than mine caught the mistake in last week’s column. Obama defeated McCain in 2008, not “W.” Ellen Snortland has written “Consider This…” for a heckuva long time, and she also coaches first-time book authors! HISTORICAL TREASURE THE LANGHAM HUNTINGTON UNVEILS RESTORED PICTURE BRIDGE STORY BY KAMALA KIRK | PHOTOS BY KEVIN EDGE

T

he Picture Bridge at The Langham Huntington, Pasadena is an iconic and historic landmark that overlooks the hotel swimming pool and Japanese Gardens, making it both a favorite spot among guests and a popular location for wedding photos and lifestyle shoots. The Picture Bridge connects The Langham, Huntington’s main building with the Royce Manor, four hotel cottages and the tennis courts. At night, the softly lit bridge is a favorite romantic place for couples with views of the San Gabriel Valley. Recently, the hotel unveiled the newly restored and rehabilitated Picture Bridge, which underwent a multimillion-dollar structural upgrade amid the property’s temporary suspension of operations during the pandemic. The project two years from start to finish, including design elements. Built in 1913, the bridge earned its name in 1933 after Stephen W. Royce, the owner and manager of what was then The Huntington Hotel, commissioned resident landscape painter Frank M. Moore to paint a series of California landscapes on the bridge. “In 1932, Mr. Royce was told by a guest that the bridge was strikingly similar to Switzerland’s Kapellbrücke Bridge, noted for the 16th and 17th century historical and religious paintings on its gables,” said Susan Williger, director of marketing services at The Langham Huntington, Pasadena. “He became enchanted with the idea of creating pictures depicting California scenes for his bridge’s gables and began searching for an artist.

Mr. Moore persuaded Mr. Royce to let him paint the scenes and received $10 for each of the 41 paintings and all the food he and his wife could eat, a valuable benefit during the Great Depression.” The paintings took a year to complete after careful study of each scene, and in March 1933, the paintings were unveiled before a crowd of “admiring promenaders.” Donald Benson Blanding, poet laureate of Hawaii and Moore’s close friend, wrote verses to accompany each locale. Twenty California landscapes and iconic treasures are depicted in the paintings, among them Cathedral Spires in Yosemite, Catalina Island’s Avalon Bay and Mount Wilson’s Observatory. The paintings also capture the community’s rich history and traditions with local Pasadena sites such as The Huntington Library, the Old Mill, an orange grove, blooming jacaranda trees and the Picture Bridge. The restoration project was done in collaboration with Pasadena Heritage, a local historic preservation nonprofit that acted as an adviser for the project, along with Chattel Inc., a consulting firm that served as a historic preservation consultant. “This project was under discussion and debate for some years, and as we all exchanged ideas and concerns, the best solution emerged to save as much original fabric as possible, and construct the needed support system in a sympathetic and unobtrusive way,” said Sue Mossman, executive director of Pasadena Heritage. NEWS BRIEF DETECTIVES INVESTING DEATH OF SHOOTING VICTIM

T

he Pasadena Police Department is investigating the death of a 29-yearold Pasadena man found shot in the 200 block of Parke Street at about 8:09 p.m. Friday, November 13. Police arrived on the scene after receiving several calls of shots fired and found the man on the sidewalk. Officers approached the victim to render aid and realized he was deceased. Preliminarily, it appears the victim was walking on the south sidewalk when the suspect(s) fired numerous shots at the victim, striking him numerous times in the upper torso. The victim attempted to run but collapsed as a result of his injuries. This is an active investigation and detectives are following up with all leads. The motive remains unknown and there are no further details at this time. The victim’s information is being withheld pending next-of-kin notification. Anyone with information is asked to call Pasadena Police at 626-744-4241.n

The project’s centerpiece was the installation of replicas of Moore’s original paintings, which had been carefully removed from the bridge in 2013 after more than 80 years of exposure to the outdoor elements. “All of the original oil paintings, which date back to 1933, were carefully removed from the bridge to halt their deterioration and have been stored in a climate-controlled art storage facility where they continue to reside,” Williger said. Prior to the recently completed work, the 1913 heavy timber wood frame bridge that spans a natural ravine was in a state of deterioration. It was protected by temporary steel shoring for approximately five years. In addition to the mounting of the replica paintings, a steel reinforcement system designed to meet contemporary seismic code, while also preserving the look of the bridge’s original historic materials and elements, was installed. “Rehabilitation of the Picture Bridge is an engineering marvel in that the structural intervention is entirely hidden and historic materials were retained in place or salvaged and reused,” said Robert Chattel, AIA, who helped guide the project. Added Williger, “The rehabilitated bridge is a combination of original Douglas fir, new redwood and pressure-treated wood, and steel. During construction, the existing terra cotta-clad gable roof was shored in place while new wood and steel supports were installed. All of the steel reinforcement is hidden by wood in order to preserve the visual appearance and physical characteristics of the bridge’s historic character. Much of the bridge’s original lumber was salvaged and reused with the maximum amount of historic materials repurposed for use in the rehabilitation effort.” Work was also done to the Picture Bridge in the late 1980s when the Huntington Hotel underwent a massive reconstruction. According to Williger, the paintings of San Francisco Bay and The Golden Gate were lost during the construction period, which reduced the number of paintings to 40. In July 1991, the bridge was also rededicated. “Restoring the Picture Bridge has been a capital project of utmost importance to us,” said Paul Leclerc, managing director of The Langham Huntington, Pasadena. “As the heart of the community, it is our responsibility and our privilege to preserve this historical treasure for the generations to come. We are thrilled the restoration of the Picture Bridge is complete and it will create yet another season for our guests and local patrons to return to The Langham.” n 8 PASADENA WEEKLY | 11.19.20

BRINGING CHEER JAYCEES AND FRIENDS IN DEED TEAM TO FEED LOW-INCOME FAMILIES BY CHRISTINA FUOCO-KARASINSKI

O

p Gobbler, the annual Thanksgiving event hosted by Friends in Deed and the Pasadena Jaycees, will continue feeding hundreds of lowincome families this Thanksgiving. This year’s event marks 36 years of partnership between the Pasadena Jaycees and Friends in Deed. “The Jaycees are a great organization who do a lot in the community,” said Tim Nistler, food pantry program director at Friends in Deed. “And Op Gobbler is a fun time for us to partner and provide turkeys to our community. This is my eighth year working with the Jaycees on the event and I look forward to it every time. This year will, obviously, be a little different. But the spirit and purpose are still there.” Because of COVID-19, the two organizations will eschew a large dinner and replace it with turkey, dessert and social distancing. On November 22, about 275 Friends in Deed families who have signed up in advance will come by FID’s north Pasadena facility to pick up their turkey and dessert. The majority of the turkeys are provided by the Jaycees, but more are coming from Pasadena Mayor Terry Tornek, Sen. Anthony Portantino and other community members. “Thanksgiving is a time for gratitude, appreciation and connection with family and friends,” said Rabbi Joshua Levine Grater, executive director of Friends in Deed. “While 2020 will limit our physical connection, we are grateful for the opportunity to provide our most vulnerable families with a turkey to celebrate this special day. We don’t take for granted how this small gesture is a huge lift of the spirit for so many. We are glad to partner with the community to make this happen.” A 126-year-old social services agency in Pasadena, Friends in Deed focuses on alleviating the effects of poverty for the community’s most vulnerable citizens. WHERE FOOD IS BORDERLESS STORY BY FRIER MCCOLLISTER | PHOTOS BY LUIS CHAVEZ

S

tarting with Hummus Lab in April and, more recently, Paper Rice and Zephyr Café, Pasadena continues to provide a berth to new restaurant ventures in the midst of the pandemic restrictions. Unlike the already established local operators, who had to pivot to takeout, delivery and outdoor seating, the newcomers had to postpone openings and radically alter business plans and models to make sense of the new reality. The lack of a loyal base of patrons inevitably proves to be an additional challenge, particularly in an already competitive local market like Pasadena. It’s difficult to open in the midst of these strange and uncertain circumstances but how about opening two outlets in the span of two months, and the first one is in an indoor mall with two closures and re-openings since March? “We’re still trying to open by the end of this month. For sure we will open by the end of November,” said Noodle Street USA President Guang Zhao. Just can’t wait? Their location at the Westfield Santa Anita Mall managed to finally open just last month. The mall has engineered an ingenious outdoor dining area and ordering system, so that you can be seated and order from Noodle Street’s menu without navigating the interior of the mall. It’s also the best way to enjoy the fresh hand-pulled noodles that are the core specialty of the menu. The only drawback to the outdoor seating at Santa Anita Mall? It keeps guests from the restaurant’s kitchen viewing window, where they can witness the impressive artisanal and athletic process of rendering the noodles. An otherwise ambitious minichain, Noodle Street opened its first location in Fullerton in April 2017 with eyes on the San Gabriel Valley. Their Monrovia location opened in 2018. “So we did have a partnership and sold similar items, but our customer base was mainly Asian and we didn’t really want to do that for the future (enterprise),” Zhao said. “We were hoping we could bring something for everyone. So, we made it more Asian fusion rather than something super authentic. This is something that we grew up with, we’re very familiar (with it). It’s something very, very popular in our home country.” Noting the signature dish on the menu, beef noodle soup, I ask if the home country is Taiwan and am quickly disabused of the notion. A native of Tieling, northeast of Beijing, Zhou further explained the specific regional influence for the concept and menu is Lanzhou-style beef noodles, referring to the city in northwest China. Lanzhou’s tradition of hand-pulled noodles and beef noodle soup can be traced to the eighth century Tang Dynasty and were the precursor of the Sichuan or red-braised variety that developed into the national dish of Taiwan. On Noodle Street stay focused on the noodles, though there are also four rice dishes on the menu, including kimchee fried rice with shrimp ($11.80). Choosing your noodles is the first task. All freshly hand-pulled, there are four noodle styles—standard round, comparable to a wider gauge spaghetti, also described as chewy; flat, resembling fettuccini, chewier; triangle, similar to standard round but wider and with a rigid surface, chewier; finally, knife cut, wider still with a 3/4-inch flat cut called chewiest. Three noodle dishes specify their own noodle style. Both the savory braised chicken noodle ($12.80) with potatoes, onions and bell peppers as well as the egg with tomato ($10.80) with scrambled eggs, tomatoes and green onions are served over knife cut noodles. The spring cold noodle ($10.80) with beef slices, cucumbers, carrots and spinach are served with the standard round variety. However, guests who are here for the signature beef noodle soup ($11.80) with sliced beef shank, radishes, leeks and cilantro can choose any of the four

varieties to suit their taste (and chew). Noodles aside, don’t ignore the list of house specials. There is local buzz building around the scallion pancakes ($4.80) and the beef rolls ($8) offer real competition to the gang of other authentic purveyors of this popular snack in the SGV. Originally, the mall location in Arcadia was intended to open in May. Due to the lockdown in March, initial construction on the space was halted and didn’t resume until June, when the mall reopened briefly, before closing again in July. Noodle Street finally managed to open its doors at Santa Anita on October 6. In the meantime, the Pasadena location at 87 E. Colorado Boulevard became available. The previous occupants, the long-time owners of the locally beloved A’Float Sushi quickly realized by April that sushi boats were a doomed format and opted to retire. Make way for Noodle Street. Now poised to open in Pasadena, less than two months after the Santa Anita opening—as of this writing—only the scheduling and approval of a final health inspection remained as the final hurdle to the opening on Colorado Boulevard. “I think we’re really close,” he said. It also remains to be seen what accommodations the city will allow for outdoor dining on the block. “We’re hoping to have an (outdoor) dining area,” Zhou said. “It’s very important to eat (the food) fresh, especially when it comes to noodles.” There will be some changes to the menu in Pasadena. “We will probably have dumpling options, which we don’t have in Arcadia,” Zhou said. “(For Pasadena) we’re trying to bring something fresh. We always feel its borderless when it comes to food and we just hope that we can bring the best to the city.” 11.19.20 | PASADENA WEEKLY 9

‘LIBRARY OF THINGS’ ALTADENA PIVOTS TO OFFER EVERYTHING FROM LAPTOPS TO TELESCOPES BY DAVE HOGG

W

ith the COVID-19 pandemic growing across the country, experts encourage people to limit trips away from home. The Altadena Library District is trying to make that as easy as possible. Along with other innovations introduced earlier in the year, both branches are offering a “Library of Things” collection, including everything from laptops and Wi-Fi hotspots to sewing machines and a telescope. The idea predates the pandemic, originating after the library teamed up with the area’s most famous scientific institution. “It’s something the Altadena Library has talked about doing for at least a couple of years,” Library Director Nikki Winslow said. “I think it stemmed largely from a partnership with JPL (NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory) where we acquired a telescope, and they were going to help us calibrate it, and that was going to kick off the Library of Things.” However, delays meant the telescope hadn’t gone into circulation when the main library and the Bob Lucas Memorial Branch closed on March 13. In the next two months, it became part of the plan to offer as many services as possible when the buildings were reopened. “We let our staff back into the building on May 18 and launched curbside delivery on May 20,” Winslow said. “To be honest, it wasn’t the most organized thing in the world, but it was something people had repeatedly asked for in the ten weeks we were working from home. So, we started it right away and figured it out as we went.” For the next four and a half months, both branches were closed except for the curbside pickups, preventing residents from using computers or taking English as a Second Language (ESL) courses. That has changed in the last few weeks, but in-person services are still highly restricted. “Until September, our focus was expanding curbside because we couldn’t open the door to people,” Winslow said. “Now we have three people working in the room for the five hours we’re open a day with a limited capacity for in-person browsing and computer usage. It is still a definite change from before the pandemic.” That’s where the Library of Things helps. With only a few patrons able to use the computers, the library board decided to release the rest of the computers into the community. “One of the reasons people need the library is to access computers and the Internet,” Winslow said. “We realized we had a lot of laptops going unused, so we expanded the number of Wi-Fi mobile hotspots we had, and we converted our laptops so they could be circulated. That’s what really brought the Library of Things to life.” The plan, though, goes far beyond access to the web. There are now sewing machines available, toolkits are being put together, and the children’s staff provided ghost-hunting tools and music kits. “The biggest delay has been the paperwork with adding items to the catalog so that they are accessible,” Winslow said. “We need to make sure people know how to use them and have the proper manuals for everything.” There have been a few minor glitches—the laptops running LINUX haven’t been popular and are being converted to Windows—but theft hasn’t been one of them. 10 PASADENA WEEKLY | 11.19.20

“One of the exciting things about this is things are getting checked out, and they are all coming back,” Winslow said. “We were really concerned about things being returned because these are more high-ticket items, so we set up a new type of patron called a ‘Good Neighbor.’ You have to have an account with us for at least 21 days and an established record of checking out things and returning them. “As a result of that program, we’re at a 100% return rate on all the items.” The library system has also gotten creative with the ways they deliver services, including taking advantage of the Southern California climate. “We recently offered a series of workshops outside of our Bob Lucas branch, where we are building a sustainable demonstration garden with native plants,” Assistant Library Director Viktor Sjolberg said. “We’ve involved the community with the building of the garden and they’ve been helping us build a kind of walkway for it. Later, we’re going to plant trees over four weekends.” The Lucas branch has also been able to restart its educational programs. “We’ve been able to offer a limited amount of in-person tutoring for learners who are enrolled in our adult-literacy program as well as ESL classes,” Sjoberg said. “They are small scale and socially distanced, but it has been very helpful because those learners have been wanting to come back for a long time.” In the first week of the closure, the library staff met with members of the town council and community groups to set up a local news source. “We wanted to have some type of centralized information hub that could get information out to the region,” Winslow said. “Pasadena has a newspaper, but Altadena really doesn’t, so we’re working with different local groups and organizations as well as LA County Public Health and the California Health Department to provide accurate, timely information to people in Altadena.” The result was Altadena Connections (altadenanews.org)—a site that has become popular with the local community, something that makes Sjoberg and Winslow proud. “This is such a good time to deepen the connections we have with the community because we are facing the shared challenge of the pandemic,” Sjoberg said. “There are times when we have to challenge ourselves and move past the status quo, and sometimes that doesn’t happen unless there is a real crisis of some sort. “I think we owe it to the community and our staff to make decisions that will allow us to provide deeper, more meaningful services now and in the future.” Sjolberg and Winslow hoped the improving coronavirus situation in southern California would allow them to move things back to normal. The recent national spike has dimmed those chances. “We’ve had a conversation about closing off in-person browsing again, but the staff still feels we can keep things safe and secure,” Winslow said. “We’re keeping an eye on everything and being responsible, but I don’t see the library fully opening again for months and months.” Until that happens, the library will keep coming up with new ways to help Altadena’s citizens. “We’re looking to find ways to offer remote service to the parts of the community that are underserved and have always been underserved,” Winslow said. “I’m really not frustrated. I’m excited by the opportunity.” n

DIANA WYENN PIVOTS WITH ‘BLOOD/SUGAR’ IN TIMES OF COVID-19 BY JANA MONJI iana Wyenn vividly recalls the spring of 2004. “I was a college student; I was invincible,” she said, and then the universe proved her wrong but universal health care saved her. Her one-woman show, “Blood/Sugar” has nothing to do with vampires, but it has everything to do with the specter of death and pandemics and how humans explain and adapt to dire situations. Originally performed in theaters, Wyenn’s solo show about her daily struggles to live with Type 1 diabetes has mutated and been re-worked to be performed live from a remote location and to address concerns related to COVID-19. “Blood/Sugar” will be performed live and broadcast from Wyenn’s home at 7 p.m. Saturday, November 21, as a CaltechLive! virtual event. “Diabetes is a global pandemic that we are not talking about and I think we need to talk about it,” Wyenn said. By 2050, the CDC projects that one in three adults will have some form of diabetes. The CDC estimates that in 2018, 34.2 million people of all ages—that’s more than 10% of the U.S. population—has diabetes. In 2017, diabetes was the seventh leading cause of death in the United States (after cancer, accidents, chronic lower respiratory diseases, stroke and Alzheimer’s disease) and diabetic deaths may be under-reported. In her show, Wyenn talks about the intersection of diabetes with COVID-19. According to the CDC, diabetics have an increased risk of severe illness from COVID-19. Wyenn was attending the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, living for the first time in London. She had spent the summer in Amsterdam and was a student at NYU. Now in a spring semester of 2004, she was living in a dorm and effortlessly losing weight. But, she remembered, “I was drinking water constantly; it’s a huge red flag your body is trying to expel the excess sugar in your blood.” Then, there was the episode on the subway, with which she opens her show. Wyenn said, “I look back and ignored these symptoms for months. If there wasn’t so much secrecy and shame around medical conditions. My fear of something being wrong also kept me away from getting help. I knew on a very deep level that there was something seriously wrong with me.” What were those symptoms? She had extreme thirst, extreme hunger. “I was gorging myself at mealtime. I was drinking water constantly.” At first, she queried the med students sharing the dorm. “They were like eat more bananas. Put more salt on your food.” None of that helped, of course. “Finally, I realized there’s universal health care here so why don’t I just go to the clinic before class?” Originally, Wyenn thought she’d get a prescription, but what happened “really flipped all of my expectations.” She was immediately admitted to an emergency room. “I’m told I’ve never been sicker in my entire life,” but Wyenn concluded, “I believe that universal health care saved my life.” When she finally got help, she had dropped to 95 pounds from her usual 115. She remembers “walking over with this IV drip to the nurses’ station and calling Los Angeles” because “anybody who cared about me is thousands of miles away.” Besides having fond memories of her artistic growth in London, Wyenn said, “The British (health care system was incredibly good to me, knowing I would return home to the American system of health care, they provided me with several months of supplies so that that transition could happen as smoothly as possible.” Yet even after her diagnosis, Wyenn wasn’t ready to talk about diabetes. “I was in complete denial for eight years, shoving it to the corner, doing only what I had to do and not taking authority over my circumstances.” Worse, when she took a deep dive online, the news wasn’t good. “I googled diabetes and ended up convinced I was going to die a double amputee, blind and of a stroke.” Wyenn explained, “There was also unnecessary shame that comes with a disease like mine; I knew no one with diabetes.” It would be about a decade before she met another Type 1 diabetic. “Nobody talked about it. It was very negative; I wanted to disassociate with that and not let people judge me.” Wyenn was diagnosed with Type 1, and if she had been a child, she would have instantly been plugged into groups and camps, but all these services were to support kids.

“Blood/Sugar” will be performed live and broadcast from Diana Wyenn’s home at 7 p.m. Saturday, November 21, as a CaltechLive! virtual event.

There are no programs for college-aged students or at least her doctor in the United States didn’t lead her to any. Curiosity got the better of her. “When I finally decided to stop hiding in 2012, I threw myself a party.” She also made 30 days of videos about diabetes that got thousands of views. In the last several years, she’s joined Facebook groups. She appreciates being part of those groups because the members are “witnessing each other’s journeys from afar, digitally,” and “they’ll share these personal experiences that you’re having in a vacuum and you feel so much less alone.” With her show, she wants to dispel the misunderstanding and mysteries that surround diabetes and be very honest. During the show, Wyenn spews out a dizzy degree of numbers. That shouldn’t phase Caltechers but, Wyenn notes, “I always loved math and science. I also took calculous and AP biology.” While she considers herself pretty good at math, diabetes is “an artistic math equation” because the math doesn’t add up. You have to figure out what works for you, depending upon what you eat. “Being great at math isn’t the only thing that’s going to keep you alive, there’s a level of testing, a level of intuition because there are scores of factors that move your blood sugar that have nothing to do with food.” Surviving in the United States with diabetes isn’t easy. Wyenn remembers when she was diagnosed, “I had health insurance, but my mentality was to avoid getting care because it was expensive no matter what.” In the United Kingdom, when she asked for the bill, they didn’t need anything. “I am extremely grateful for universal health care; it will save lives and it will reduce costs. It is a big reason why I do this show.” Under President Donald Trump, her Affordable Healthcare became less affordable, increasing from $250 a month to $458. Annually, her healthcare costs her $7,888 “if nothing goes wrong.” Still she considers herself lucky because some diabetics are skimping on their insulin and that could have dire consequences. Changing the show to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic required about two months. “I already had video design integrated in this show” and her video designer was quickly on board. Three different cameras are set up in her house, all connected to cellphones and laptops. Because it’s live, you might meet her dogs or her housemates. She’s literally turned her house into a theater and the feeling is cozy and intimate. The show also has moments of Shakespeare. The pandemic has made quotes from Richard II even more poignant. As you mull over casual meals out into the world while you’re sequestered, you can imagine how sadly isolated the man who was once king felt. “To survive right now, we need each other more than we may be willing to admit,” she said. “Our autonomy must be balanced with our interconnectedness and mutual aid. We must protect ourselves, but we must also protect others. Wearing a mask is an important and powerful act of care, a gesture that I recognize that your life matters, and I want to protect you too. This isn’t an either/or scenario, it is additive and exponential for better or for worse, and I would like to see us both take and give care.” n

Men’s Virility Restored in Clinical Trial; 275% More Blood Flow in 5 Minutes A newly improved version of America’s best-selling male performance enhancer gives 70-year-old men the ability and stamina they enjoyed in their 30’s. America’s best-selling sexual performance enhancer just got a lot better. It’s the latest breakthrough for nitric oxide – the molecule that makes E.D. woes fade and restores virility when it counts the most. Nitric oxide won the Nobel Prize in 1998. It’s why “the little blue pill” works. More than 200,000 studies confirm it’s the key to superior sexual performance. And this new discovery increases nitric oxide availability resulting in even quicker, stronger and longer-lasting performance. One double-blind, placebo-controlled study (the “gold-standard” of research) involved a group of 70-year-old-men. They didn’t exercise. They didn’t eat healthy. And researchers reported their “nitric oxide availability was almost totally compromised,” resulting in blood flow less than HALF of a man in peak sexual health. But only five minutes after the first dose their blood flow increased 275%, back to levels of a perfectly healthy 31-year-old man! “It’s amazing,” remarks nitric oxide expert Dr. Al Sears. “That’s like giving 70-year-old men the sexual power of 30-year-olds.”

WHY SO MUCH EXCITEMENT? Despite the billions men spend annually on older nitric oxide therapies, there’s one wellknown problem with them. They don’t always work. A very distinguished and awarded doctor practicing at a prestigious Massachusetts hospital who has studied Nitric Oxide for over 43 years states a “deficiency of bioactive nitric oxide… leads to impaired endothelium-dependent vasorelaxation.” In plain English, these older products may increase levels of nitric oxide. But that’s only half the battle. If it’s not bioactively available then your body can’t absorb it to produce an erection. Experts simply call it the nitric oxide “glitch.” And until now, there’s never been a solution.

NEXT GENERATION NITRIC OXIDE FORMULA FLYING OFF SHELVES Upon further research, America’s No. 1 men’s health expert Dr. Al Sears discovered certain nutrients fix this “glitch” resulting in 275% better blood flow.

He’s combined those nutrients with proven nitric oxide boosters in a new formula called Primal Max Red. In clinical trials, 5,000 mg is required for satisfying sexual performance. Primal Max Red contains a bigger, 9,000 mg per serving dose. It’s become so popular, he’s having trouble keeping it in stock. Dr. Sears is the author of more than 500 scientific papers. Thousands of people listened to him speak at the recent Palm Beach Health & Wellness Festival featuring Dr. Oz. NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Namath recently visited his clinic, the Sears Institute for Anti-Aging Medicine. Primal Max Red has only been available for a few months — but everyone who takes it reports a big difference. “I have the energy to have sex three times in one day, WOW! That has not happened in years. Oh, by the way I am 62,” says Jonathan K. from Birmingham, AL.

A new discovery that increases nitric oxide availability was recently proven in a clinical trial to boost blood flow 275%

“I measured my nitric oxide levels, you can buy a test kit from Amazon,” reports 48-year-old Jeff O. “Monday night I showed depleted.” Then he used ingredients in Primal Max Red and, “The results were off the charts. I first woke around 3 a.m. on Tuesday very excited. My nitric oxide levels measured at the top end of the range.”

HOW IT WORKS

FREE BONUS TESTOSTERONE BOOSTER

Loss of erection power starts with your blood vessels. Specifically, the inside layer called the endothelium where nitric oxide is made.

Every order also gets Dr. Sears testosterone boosting formula Primal Max Black for free.

The problem is various factors THICKEN your blood vessels as you age. This blocks availability causing the nitric oxide “glitch.” The result is difficulty in getting and sustaining a healthy erection. How bad is the problem? Researcher shows the typical 40-year-old man absorbs 50% less nitric oxide. At 50, that drops to 25%. And once you pass 60 just a measly 15% gets through. To make matters worse, nitric oxide levels start declining in your 30’s. And by 70, nitric oxide production is down an alarming 75%. Primal Max Red is the first formula to tackle both problems. Combining powerful nitric oxide boosters and a proven delivery mechanism that defeats the nitric oxide “glitch” resulting in 275% better blood flow. There’s not enough space here to fully explain how it works, so Dr. Sears will send anyone who orders Primal Max Red a free special report that explains everything.

MORE CLINICAL RESULTS Nutrients in Primal Max Red have logged impressive results. In a Journal of Applied Physiology study, one resulted in a 30 times MORE nitric oxide. And these increased levels lasted up to 12 hours.

“If you want passionate ‘rip your clothes off’ sex you had in your younger days, you need nitric oxide to get your erection going. And testosterone for energy and drive,” says Dr. Sears. “You get both with Primal Max Red and Primal Max Black.”

HOW TO GET PRIMAL MAX To secure free bottles of Primal Max Black and get the hot, new Primal Max Red formula, buyers should contact the Sears Health Hotline at 1-800-329-9455 within the next 48 hours. “It’s not available in drug stores yet,” says Dr. Sears. “The Hotline allows us to ship directly to the customer.” Dr. Sears feels so strongly about Primal Max, all orders are backed by a 100% money-back guarantee. “Just send me back the bottle and any unused product within 90 days from purchase date, and I’ll send you all your money back,” he says. The Hotline will be open for the next 48 hours. After that, the phone number will be shut down to allow them to restock. Call 1-800-329-9455 to secure your limited supply of Primal Max Red and free bottles of Primal Max Black. ÓLAFUR ARNALDS, “Some Kind of Peace” (Mercury KX): HHHH

An abiding sense of water—cleansing rain, mists, fog, icy rivers melting—imbues the Icelandic composer’s aptly titled fifth album, from winsome opener “Loom,” featuring British DJ Bonobo (one of three vocalist-fronted tracks), through the intimate keyboard contemplation of “We Contain Multitudes.” That watery ambiance felt even more pronounced during last week’s livestreamed concert from Reykjavík, where a fourpiece string section was exquisitely attuned to the raindrop cadence of pieces such as “Woven Song” and “New Grass.” Here, time feels suspended, a tribute to the hope built into Arnalds’ graceful harmonics and melodic progressions. Olafurarnalds.com

SONGHOY BLUES, “Optimisme” (Fat Possum): HHH½

Long exiled from its northern Mali home by extremist invaders, this quartet defies despair while pushing desert blues-rock’s boundaries with judicious support from Chavez producer Matt Sweeney. “Badala” is a blast of raw guitar fury between gritty lead singer Aliou Touré and guitarist Garba Touré (no relation) that champions women while demonstrating how far they’ve ventured from early days performing Ali Farka Touré covers. Robust conviction and call-and-response guitar dynamics transcend the Songhoy language barrier of “Barre” (“Change”), and “Worry” and “Dournia” are similarly driven by determined optimism, slamming drums and searing guitar leads. songhoyblues.com

JEFF TWEEDY, “Love Is the King” (dBpm Records): HHH

With COVID rates spiking and states reinstating restrictions, this 11-track platter of musical comfort food feels ever more relevant. Created during the pandemic’s early months at Tweedy’s Chicago studio with sons Sammy and Spencer, the album finds the Wilco frontman occasionally evoking The Band and Gram Parsons as he sifts through simple musical motifs and celebrates enduring joys: the consolations of home, nature’s sensory pleasures, love’s redemption. “Cry, don’t you dare,” he admonishes during the title track. “When I die in the ring/ Life isn’t fair/ Love is the king.” Other highlights: the gently upbeat “Guess Again,” “Troubled,” the lilting “Save It for Me.” wilcoworld.net

THE MASTERSONS, “Red, White & I Love You Too” (Red House): HHH

Emerging less than a year after the LA-based Americana duo’s very fine “No Time for Love Songs,” this five-track EP vents political anxieties while sidestepping specifics right from opener “Sensitive Souls” (“Is it the best we can do, does anybody care/ We’re heading for a cliff and we’re almost there”). A less jangly reprise of “No Time for Love Songs” derives hope from the sunlight-and-shadow vocal chemistry between violinist Eleanor Whitmore and guitarist husband Chris Masterson, as does Appalachian-blued stomper “In the Name of God.” themastersonsmusic.com

‘Time Between’

CHRIS HILLMAN’S NEW BOOK CHRONICLES CHILDHOOD TRAUMA, MUSICAL ADVENTURES

C

hris Hillman is one of the key founders of country-rock and folk-rock (and, many would argue, Americana). He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991 as an original member of the Byrds; his rock star cred’s further burnished by post-Byrds flights with the Flying Burrito Brothers and Manassas, and more countrified ventures such as the Desert Rose Band and singer-songwriter trio Souther-Hillman-Furay. Yet Hillman has generally been overshadowed by more flamboyant bandmates such as David Crosby, Gram Parsons and Stephen Stills. The tenacious survivor unevenly strives to make peace with that dynamic throughout his new memoir, “Time Between: My Life as a Byrd, Burrito Brother and Beyond,” which features several players and scenes from Pasadena’s 1960s-’70s-era music community. That includes a bass-throwing display of Hillman’s “DEFCON-2”-level temper backstage at the Rose Bowl, when he confronted the Byrds’ shady manager and quit the band. From the prologue, in which Hillman recounts how he and wife Connie grabbed their dog and belongings before evacuating their Ventura home just ahead of 2017’s Thomas Fire, it’s clear his storied life contains even more dramatic chapters than have been publicized. The book sidesteps lurid tattle, though it’s distractingly peppered with famous names. Moving early chapters detail a sunny California childhood in Rancho Santa Fe, where his doomed father counted Hollywood stars such as Victor Mature as neighbors and confidantes. An adolescent Hillman worked odd jobs to afford early passions: a horse, surfing, motorcycles and, most consequentially, guitar and mandolin, after he was introduced to folk and bluegrass via his sister’s records. That instilled methodic discipline that, after their father’s suicide, led to a life-changing stint with the Golden State Boys. It also illuminates later relationships with Crosby and Parsons, as well as Hillman’s conservative mindset and gradual religious awakening. It’s a long-held truism in some bluegrass and country circles that without Hillman’s disciplined focus the more charismatic Parsons would not have achieved renown as the father of Cosmic American Music. It’s a purposeless debate; there’s no binary choice. Parsons overdosed in Joshua Tree in 1973, so instead of aging alongside Hillman (who barely survived a 1998 bout with hepatitis C), he’s remembered as a perpetually young, hippie-glam rocker. It does not nullify Parsons’ creative legacy to honor Hillman’s equal role in composing classics such as “Wheels” and “Sin City.” The sometimes-cantankerous Hillman sounds both bruised and biting when he writes, “I believe there were only three people who really knew, loved and understood Gram Parsons: me, Emmylou Harris and Rev. Jet Thomas” and “none of us could save him.” His lyrical dissection of “Sin City” is telling. Written during a prolific period when he and Parsons “could practically finish one another’s thoughts while writing or singing,” its stanzas were informed by Parsons’ addictions, the Byrds’ manager, Bobby Kennedy (“A friend came around, tried to clean up this town”), Vietnam, “California’s seismic shifts” and 1968’s political tumult. It emblemizes Hillman’s deeper story, tempered with gratitude and concern, of a culture of live music, and the symbiotic relationship between artists and momentous times still reverberating in our lives and politics in 2020. n
