Study: Many millennials feel unprepared for employment BY CHRISTINA FUOCO-KARASINSKI
A new survey measuring the pulse of millennial college graduates reveals key insights into their level of satisfaction with their academic experience and preparation for careers. While most highly value their college education and degree, 40% wish they had done more to prepare for their careers during college. The Millennial College Graduate Report was directed by Dr. Larry Chiagouris, author of “The Secret to Getting a Job After College” and a leading national authority on marketing, higher education and employment. The study found a majority of college graduates value the education that they received. Most also report their degrees prepared them for employment and they would not change the decision they made to attend college. However, the survey does reveal that a sizable minority hold less than positive views, which indicate there is more work to be done by colleges and students to obtain greater career-related value from their education. In many instances, millennials acknowledge their own culpability in not taking more advantage of career services, advice from professors and internships. The survey was conducted among 1,023 millennial college graduates. Key findings include: Two-thirds of respondents agreed that obtaining a degree prepared them for employment and about 61% would recommend the college that they graduated from to friends or colleagues. However, more than 33% of the respondents agreed that their college overpromised and under delivered how well pre-
pared they would be for employment after graduation. The responsibility for career progress, or lack of it, also resides with the graduates. Only about half of respondents made extensive efforts to seek career advice from their professors and only 40% fully utilized the services offered to them through their college/university career services department. 58% stated that they wish they had taken more advantage of internship opportunities during their college years and 69% admitted they did not do enough career planning before accepting their first job. “While the majority of recent college Varsity Facility Services is hiring part-time and full-time janitorial positions for offices in the City of Glendale.
graduates believe that their education brought them value in obtaining employment, there remains a large minority that hold some reservations about the career preparation aspect,” Chiagouris said. “If you consider that most companies would not be pleased to learn that more than a third of their customer base holds some form of negative perception, it’s clear that there is a path to improvement in this area.” The Millennial College Graduate Report was conducted during September and October 2019 and included 1,023 respondents who qualified as millennials with college degrees.

Peoria Chamber’s new focus is as easy as ABC BY THE PEORIA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
Advocate. Build. Connect. The Peoria Chamber of Commerce is getting back to the basic ABCs as it recalibrates its efforts to help West Valley businesses through hands-on education about topics they need to operate their businesses. The chamber is leveraging its resources with the city of Peoria and state of Arizona to provide more of an educational theme to its events. Its advocacy focus for its businesses was demonstrated in the quarterly luncheon at Centennial High School on October 23. State Rep. Kevin Payne addressed the group and provided information regarding the initiatives he put into place based on roadblocks he faced with his food truck business. The chamber addressed the concern from several member businesses regarding signage and the enormous nonrefundable fees just to submit a proposal for a signage change. It appeared there was no scale based on business size or revenue for the sub-
mission fees. It makes it cost prohibitive for smaller business members to make improvements. Payne was going to look into the process. The Peoria Chamber of Commerce has plenty of networking opportunities, the organization wants to take it a step further and provide more value for your time. The chamber yearns to build solid relationships and connect authentically to build a stronger and more collaborative West Valley business climate. Peoria Chamber of Commerce is located at 8385 W. Mariners Way, Suite 3, Peoria. For more information, call 623-979-3601 or visit peoriachamber. com. Experience the new Peoria Chamber of Commerce. Visit peoriachamber. com. Maria Pataka loves to work with families. She loves to see them improve and see their “wonderful outcomes” at the end of the year. role in Westside Head Start, including parent committee meetings, monthly classroom experiences and gardening opportunities. The facilities served more than 1,100 children and their families last year, and nearly 90% received medical and dental screenings. “I am even more committed to work here after my son experienced Westside Head Start as a student, and got all the help that he needed,” Pataka said. Catholic Charities Westside Head Start is hiring for numerous positions, as well as seeking volunteers, in and out of the classroom.
