During the holiday season, many will struggle with increased feelings of loneliness — especially seniors, who spend more time alone than the average adult. According to Meals on Wheels America, one in four US seniors live alone. Isolation can cause detrimental health issues, including heightened risk of heart disease, dementia and premature death. The holidays also bring their own challenges for isolated seniors, as they may struggle with increased lack of mobility and grief over lost loved ones. In September, the Jean Griswold Foundation partnered with Meals on Wheels America to tackle the senior isolation epidemic. We at Griswold Home Care have seen first-hand how companionship improves one’s wellbeing, and we’re proud to support an organization that shares our mission of helping people live fulfilling lives at home. This season, we encourage you to join our efforts by checking on your aging loved ones often. ~ RICHARD SHOOP DIRECTOR GRISWOLD HOME CARE OF PASADENA

PAUSE, LOVE, LISTEN

It seems our nation and our world is going through some tumultuous times. In these days when a Twitter or Facebook posting can result in instantaneous outrage — how do we allow for a pause? In these times when one’s fault or failure can be captured on YouTube (and elsewhere) and replayed again and again on endless loops . . . how do we allow for a pause? It’s clear that in our world demanding instantaneous responses (the more vulgar the better) we could all benefit from a pause. So Pause Love Listen it occurs to me, once we place a label on one another a label other than brother or sister, we, to a certain extent, misknow one another

it occurs to me, when encountering another being if all I can see are their faults (faults as defined by me) I am blinding myself to that person as they actually are it occurs to me, I have the option of adding to the hatred and division in our nation and in our world today or doing my upmost to reflect the recognition that all human life is sacred, without exception or precondition or required viewpoint it occurs to me, I have much to learn about reality and yet I must face my today with much unlearned it occurs to me, I am blessed beyond what I can measure I am thankful for my faults, for I cannot imagine a better teacher I am thankful for family and friends, for I am not called to address life challenges on my own it occurs to me, I have learned much in life by listening to others — including those I most disagree with So Pause Love Listen (all this division and hatred breaks my heart) ~ JOHN SANDERS JONES VIA EMAIL

Re: Climate Change Challenge Michael Ford Lesson to take from climate change: stop being so dramatic and enjoy your life now while you still have it. Eventually maybe the climate will reverse course but to be living in fear every day as a child about a worldwide problem seems like bad parenting. What is life if it’s not to be enjoyed and aim for happiness? Jim Apodaca Dear Mr. Ford, In WWII we all knew that there was a threat to our way of life and no one decided to just enjoy life while it lasted and pretended that everything was fine. Climate change is just as much of a threat to our way of life so I think it’s only responsible for ALL OF US to take it seriously and take action. Just like we did then.

JUST RELAX BREATHING, SITTING AND CONTEMPLATING DOES WONDERS FOR WHAT WE IDENTIFY AS STRESS

I can’t stress enough that stress is utterly relative, whether it is between us and others (especially relatives), or only with ourselves. Holidays are often stress magnets. Breathe. What “stressed me out” when I was a teen is not what stresses me today. Although I don’t like getting a zit now, I don’t rearrange my professional or social life because of one, as I would have in my teens. As an adult, I also have a rule that has served me well: If whatever is stressing me doesn’t stress my dogs, I should follow their example. Yep. Conversely, if they are stressing, then it’s time to listen. My dogs acted weird 10 minutes before the 1994 Northridge earthquake, and they were correct. Citizens in the purported developed world have a completely different grasp of stress compared with the people in the so-called developing world; it’s a luxury to even identify a stressor. Not having access to clean water or enough food are off the charts on the Stress-O-Meter. Don’t misunderstand me; a favorite adage of Nichiren Buddhists is, “Suffer what there is to suffer; enjoy what there is to enjoy.” Suffering is suffering, and no individual has the right to tell you what you should or shouldn’t stress over — only you can do that for yourself. A more useful response to someone’s expressing their stress might be to say “tell me more” instead of offering unsolicited advice. And yes, I realize that is unsolicited advice. As with everything, context is decisive. The Norwegians have a saying; “There’s no bad weather; only bad clothing.” I will morph that a bit into “There is no stress; there is only the interpretation of stress.” Oh yeah? For some people, those are fightin’ words. Even the thought of stress not necessarily existing in reality and solely in language angers them. When it comes to stress, what if you could wave a metaphorical magic wand and relax? Consider this: Your magic abracadabra to shifting from stress to chill is the ability to identify when you feel upset, out of sorts, beleaguered, or victim-y and take that as a cue to simply… sit down! Sit down, for goodness’ sakes. You’re allowed to sit anything out. Really. I saw a meme today on Facebook that transformed the tired adage, “Don’t just sit there, DO something!” into “Don’t just DO something, SIT there!” Breathing, sitting and contemplating does wonders for what we identify as stress. My husband and I have had a practice for the past five years or so. When we’re “stressing” over something, one of us will usually say, “Is this what fun looks like?” And we laugh. Maybe we’re simpletons, or perhaps we’re onto something. Try it. Sitting and laughing may be the best stress reducer known to womankind — and by extension, all of humanity! So burn the gravy, forget to send a Kwanzaa card, knock over the Hanukkah candles, let the dog pee on the Christmas tree. Perfectionism is a guaranteed stress producer, so give it up. Being utterly idiotic is fun and worthy of a nice sit. Or a nap. Consider napping if you don’t want to sit down. Bears do it, cats do it, dogs do it. If napping or sitting is good enough for my dog, it’s good enough for me. Sit! Stay. Good person! What a good person. Are you a good person? Yes, you are! ‘IMPROPER EXERCISE’ JUDGE BLOCKS CANNABIS INITIATIVE FROM MARCH BALLOT BY ANDRÉ COLEMAN

A

Los Angeles superior court judge ruled last week that a ballot initiative that would increase the number of allowable cannabis dispensaries in Pasadena from six to three times that many was invalid and blocked it from being placed on the March 3 ballot. Called “The People’s Initiative to Preserve the Existing Operation of Non -Offending Commercial Cannabis Businesses,” the initiative would have allowed 18 cannabis retailers to operate in the city, some of which had been shut down by Pasadena officials. In her decision, Judge Mary H. Strobel said that the cannabis initiative “mandates actions that are administrative and adjudicative. Thus, it is an improper exercise of the initiative power.” The ruling could be the final nail in the coffin for the illegal operators. The Los Angeles County Registrar’s deadline for printing ballots is Jan. 3, which does not give proponents of the initiative enough time to rewrite the measure and circulate it for qualifying signatures. Even if the proponents decide to try again for the November election, they would be required to write an entirely new initiative that is within the limits of the law. “Today the court saw through the attempts of the illegal cannabis operators to do an end-run around the protections approved by the voters,” said Pasadena City Manager Steve Mermell. “When voters adopted Measure CC, they wanted limits on not only the locations where cannabis could be sold, but also a cap on the total number of retailers in the city. The illegal operators tried to wholly gut those protections. This win validates the city’s desire to protect the will of our voters, who entrusted us to allow cannabis retailers in but only under very controlled conditions. We will continue to protect the will of the voters.” According to the state constitution, initiatives must be legislative. “By effectively compelling the issuance of an operating permit to the noncomplying cannabis dispensaries and granting them exemptions from the conditional use restrictions set forth in the city’s zoning laws regarding the permissible locations for such businesses, the initiative purports to mandate administrative or adjudicative actions that would normally be performed by

city staff and its Planning Commission, and it is thus beyond the electorate’s legislative power of initiative,” the city’s lawsuit against the initiative stated. Due to the procedural nature of the initiative and their roles in certifying it, the city was forced to list City Clerk Mark Jomsky and LA County Registrar Dean Logan as respondents. However, City Attorney Michele Bagneris announced several weeks ago that neither was the true target of the lawsuit. According to the city’s lawsuit, the real parties of interest are George Bernales, Susan Gomez and Alan Jay, the three people listed as the proponents of the ballot measure. Last year, voters passed Measure CC, the city’s highly regulated process which allows only six pot dispensaries, and only one in each of the city’s seven council districts. The measure also requires dispensaries to maintain strict distance limits from schools, libraries, churches and residential neighborhoods. Nearly 200 businesses applied to do business in Pasadena. After Measure CC passed, the City Council banned so-called “nuisance,” or non-permitted dispensaries from applying for business licenses under the city’s cannabis law. In June, The Atrium Group, Harvest of Pasadena, Integral Associates Dena, Tony Fong, Sweetwater Pasadena and MME Pasadena Retail were picked from among 122 applicants vying for permission to sell marijuana in the city. The initiative did not require the 18 dispensary owners to adhere to provisions of Measure CC, which also led to the measure’s downfall. State law prohibits businesses from using the initiative process to carve out a benefit for itself. “Non-offending commercial cannabis businesses may continue engaging in commercial cannabis activity within the city of Pasadena without a commercial cannabis permit from the city of Pasadena until Dec. 31, 2024,” according to the initiative. “Non-offending commercial cannabis businesses operating without a permit pursuant to this subdivision shall not be deemed, ordered discontinued, modified, or removed as a public nuisance pursuant to the Pasadena Municipal Code based solely on their engagement in commercial cannabis activities permitted by this Chapter. Owners of non-offending commercial cannabis CONTINUED ON PAGE 8

AVERTING A VAPING ‘EPIDEMIC’

GLENDALE AND LOS ANGELES SCHOOL DISTRICTS JOIN STATE AND COUNTY OFFICIALS IN FILING LAWSUITS AGAINST TOP E-CIG MANUFACTURER BY ANDRÉ COLEMAN

T

he Glendale Unified School District (GUSD) has joined the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) in a lawsuit against JUUL Labs, one of the country’s biggest nicotine vaping manufacturers. In the lawsuit filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court, the school districts claim JUUL has created “an epidemic” that impacts student learning and endangers the health of students in the districts. “Protecting student safety and well-being is our top priority,” said Glendale Unified Superintendent Dr. Vivian Ekchian. “The vaping crisis puts student health at risk, negatively affects campus culture, and diverts valuable district resources. This crisis is made worse when companies like JUUL intentionally target young people in their marketing.” According to the complaint, the vaping epidemic will continue to challenge the academic achievements of all Glendale Unified students as the district is forced to divert resources, time and effort to confront the issue. The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, Los Angeles District Attorney Jackie Lacey and state Attorney General Xavier Becerra have also filed lawsuits in state court against the e-cigarette maker. Attorneys general for the states of New York and North Carolina, and the District of Columbia have also filed lawsuits against JUUL. Pasadena Unified School District spokesperson Hilda Hovarth Ramirez said she did not know if the PUSD was considering joining GUSD and LAUSD in their lawsuit. Earlier this month, PUSD teamed with the city’s Health Department for a series of workshops on the dangers of vaping. According to a story in the Oct. 18 edition of the Pasadena Polytechnic School Paw Print, 53.7 percent of the respondents of a survey sent to students by the school paper said that they had witnessed another student vaping. However, very few of the 231 respondents said they vaped regularly. Of the 52 that said they had vaped, half of them had tried vaping once, 13 students reported they vape every few months and 11 said they vaped every few weeks. One student responded they vape once or more a week and one student said they vaped daily. According to a November report, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration found JUUL’s sales make up more than 64 percent of the e-cigarette market. Smoking remains the No. 1 preventable killer in the

United States and causes over 480,000 deaths per year. As of Nov. 13, the CDC reported 42 deaths of patients as a result of e-cigarette or vaping product use, with a further 2,172 cases of associated lung injury reported nationwide. “California has worked vigorously to decrease tobacco use only to have big tobacco develop youth targeted instruments like vape pens to cultivate a new generation of smokers,” said Christy Zamani, executive director of Day One, a Pasadena based youth advocacy nonprofit group. “Nearly 1 in 10 high school students in LA County report using e-cigarettes. That is not by chance,” said LA County Supervisor Janice Hahn in a prepared statement. “JUUL has systematically targeted the teen market with everything from the design of their products to their advertisements. With this lawsuit we are going to hold JUUL accountable for their hand in this public health crisis and do what we can to stop this company from creating a new generation of nicotine addicts.” JUUL recently announced it would stop selling some flavored electronic cigarettes, including mint,

the most popular flavor among high school students, according to a recent government study. “These results are unacceptable and that is why we must reset the vapor category in the US and earn the trust of society by working cooperatively with regulators, attorneys general, public health officials, and other stakeholders to combat underage use,” said JUUL Labs CEO K.C. Croshwaite in a prepared statement. Lacey said JUUL’s decision to stop selling the flavored product had come too late and cited the many teens who are already caught up in vaping. “Not only has vaping affected individual learning, it has led to a rise in student absences due to disciplinary action or sickness, which, in turn, causes a reduction in district state funding,” the DA’s civil complaint alleges. “Funds typically used for classroom instruction are now being diverted for educational assemblies, prevention and treatment for student vaping, as well as detection and enforcement of vaping. District property has also been affected as student bathrooms often cannot be utilized due to high instances of bathroom vaping.” n

businesses operating without a permit pursuant to this subdivision may apply for a commercial cannabis permit from the city of Pasadena at any time. After Dec. 31, 2024, all commercial cannabis businesses may operate only after such businesses apply for and receive a commercial cannabis permit pursuant to this Chapter.” Local authorities worked for years at shuttering pot shops that did not go through the city’s permit process. At one point, city officials threatened to shut off power and water at sites leased to illegal operators. Since Measure CC passed, several dispensaries that were not picked to move forward in the city’s approval process have threatened lawsuits through claims filed against the city. A claim for damages is usually the first step in filing a lawsuit against a government agency. 8 PASADENA WEEKLY | 12.19.19

WOW Health and Wellness, which did not make the cut, has accused the city of corrupt actions during the application process, a charge officials have denied. In fact, the city has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars with an outside law firm to investigate those claims, and were cleared of any wrongdoing. Atrium, which did make the cut, filed a lawsuit when city officials refused to process its applications for a conditional use permit after the Harvest Pasadena turned in a successful application in District 3. Since only one dispensary is allowed in each council district, the city operates on a first come, first served basis and stops processing applications after receiving complete paperwork from a dispensary owner. In the lawsuit, Atrium claims the city violated the due process rights of the business. n

IN SEARCH OF THE REAL

Santa Claus THE STORY OF ST. NICHOLAS AND THE BIRTH OF CHRISTMAS

BY CHRISTOPHER NYERGES

R

ecently, while doing some painting on an outside wall of my home, I had the radio on just to listen to people call in and talk with the host. One man called and complained that people pay more attention to Santa Claus during the Christmas season than to the birth of Jesus. He argued that this was proof that “we” have allowed secularism — and maybe even paganism — to creep into the Christmas tradition. The host just politely listened, thanked the caller, and then went on to the next call. The fact is, Santa Claus is not a myth, and he wasn’t a pagan. There actually is a historical figure upon which “Santa Claus” is based. Nicholas of Myra was a 4th-century bishop in the Catholic Church of Asia Minor. He was born on March 15, 270, in Pataya, Lycia, in what is now modern Turkey. At that time, however, the area was culturally Greek, and was politically part of the Roman Diocese of Asia. He was the only child of wealthy Greek parents who both died in an epidemic when Nicholas was young. Nicholas inherited much wealth from his parents, and was then raised by his uncle (also named Nicholas), Bishop of Patara, who trained young Nicholas for priesthood. Nicholas was said to be deeply religious even at an early age, and he always fasted on Wednesdays and Fridays. Because of his outspoken beliefs, he was persecuted by the Romans and was imprisoned during the persecution of Diocletian. In case you never heard of the persecution of Diocletian (I hadn’t), it was the most severe of the persecu-

tions against Christians, simply because they were Christians during the time of the Roman Empire. It was also known as the “Great Persecution.” In 303, four emperors issued a series of dictatorial laws which essentially did away with any legal rights of Christians. The edicts demanded that Christians comply with traditional Roman “religious” practices, meaning, giving sacrifices to the various Roman gods. This persecution was severe, and was weakest in the British colonies where the Empire had the least sway. It was most severe in the Eastern provinces, where Nicholas lived. Since Nicholas refused to worship the Roman gods, he was imprisoned and suffered hardship, hunger and cold for about five years. With Constantine’s rise to power, the persecutions came to an end in 313. Nicholas was soon released. Constantine is known for pragmatically “Christianizing” the Roman Empire, and renaming all the Mythraic and so-called “pagan” holidays so they could all now be regarded as Christian holidays. Shortly after his return to his homeland in 317, Nicholas became the Bishop of Myra. He was later invited to attend the First Council of Nicaea in 325, the famous council where much of the modern dogma of the Catholic Church was determined. Nicholas of Myra was one of many bishops to participate in the council at Constantine’s request. He is listed as the 151st attendee at the council. There, Nicholas was a staunch anti-Arian. Arius, from Alexandria, held that the Son of God did not always exist, but was created by the Father. Nicholas disagreed CONTINUED ON PAGE 10

with Arius, and defended the developing orthodox Christian viewpoint. According to stories told, Nicholas got so angry at Arius that he began to duke it out with him, punching Arius in the face! Really? Proto-Santa Claus punches a fellow man of the cloth? It must have been an amazing thing to witness. Back in his homeland, Nicholas became known as a very generous bishop. Remember, he inherited wealth from his parents, and he would sometimes give gold and other valuables to those that he heard were in need. I like to think that Nicholas was someone who truly embodied the tenets of original Christianity, someone for whom the church should be most proud. In one case, it is said that Nicholas tossed a bag of gold coins into a needy family’s yard, anonymously. He was apparently humble, and didn’t want to be seen giving money to people, so he did it secretly. He was so famous for wanting to give such gifts in private when he traveled the countryside that children were told to go to sleep quickly or Nicholas would not come with gifts. This, apparently, is the origin of telling children to go to sleep or that Santa will not come. In one story, he snuck into the home of a family where the three daughters of a poor man were about to get married. Nicholas put some gold into the stockings which the girls left by the fire to dry. This, apparently, is the origin of hanging up stockings on Christmas Eve. He was also well known for the gifts that he gave to newly married couples during the already established Christmas season. (Remember, the “Christmas season” predates Christianity by several millennia — Christianity simply redefined the winter solstice commemorations of the so-called “pagans.” And so it goes. Nicholas was a complex man, part of the new Catholic tradition which celebrated the birth of Jesus on the already-observed winter solstice. (Early Judeo-Christians did not celebrate the birth of Jesus, a date that has been lost to history, but was definitely not Dec. 25).

10 PASADENA WEEKLY | 12.19.19

Nicholas died on Dec. 6, 343, which to this day is known as “St. Nicholas Day.” Upon his death, he was buried in the Cathedral of Myra. He is revered as a saint in most versions of Christianity and is especially honored in Eastern Orthodox Christianity. By the year 450, churches in Greece and Asia Minor were being named in honor of Nicholas. He was officially honored as a saint by the Eastern Catholic Church in 800. Dec. 6 began to be celebrated as Bishop Nicholas Day in France by the 1200s. As time went on, whenever someone received a mysterious gift, it would be attributed to St. Nicholas! The Dutch called St. Nicholas “Sinterklass,” which is the most likely manner in which the name St. Nicholas gradually evolved into “Santa Claus.” Along the way, St. Nicholas was given some of the attributes of Odin, the Norse god, who could travel through the sky and who had a secret home somewhere around the North Pole. Come to think of it, even the Superman story borrowed from Odin. Remember how Superman sometimes goes to a secret cavern in the Northern coldlands and converses with his ancestors via ice crystals? The image continued to morph over the years, with the Coca Cola company giving the world a somewhat sanitized and plumper St. Nicholas-Santa Claus with their early 20th century advertisements. There we began to see the fatter bearded man in the red suit. Today, the man you see in the mall is the modern condensation of fact and myth, embodying the generosity of one Catholic bishop, bits of the mythology of Odin, and the good will of all — including parents — who give gifts in his stead. n Christopher Nyerges is an author, lecturer and educator who has written such books as “Extreme Simplicity,” “How to Survive Anywhere” and “Guide to Wild Foods,” among others. Holiday Eating YOUR SHOPPING BREAK FOOD GUIDE BY MICHAEL SPRAGUE

T

hings are about to get wild at our shopping centers and malls. I know online shopping may be on the rise, but returns and replacements are made in person. And let’s not forget about the gift cards to fulfill following the holiday gift-giving (and receiving) season. So whether you need to refuel while you’re hauling a family and reusable bags to pick up those last-minute gifts for coworkers and neighbors, or you’re heading into the chaos of the week after Christmas to get a smokin’ ensemble to ring in a new decade, let this be your guide to one simple choice: food. Allow me to take one thing off of your to-do list by informing you about the best eats for your level of shopping intensity. In Old Pasadena, my choice for just about any type of eating is Edwin Mills by Equator (22 Mills Place, (626) 564-8656, edwinmills.com) It’s my universal recommendation for anyone, any time, and all occasions. It is no surprise Kabuki Japanese Restaurant (88 W. Colorado Blvd., (626) 568-9310; 3539 E. Foothill Blvd., (626) 351-8963; kabukirestaurants.com) won Best Family Restaurant in this year’s Best of Pasadena issue. Kabuki checks off every box a family could want. For parents, they have a huge variety of Japanese options, from teriyaki chicken plates to platters of sushi and cocktails. More importantly though, parents can pretty much eat anywhere; it is the kids who really decide where to go. Kabuki has a pretty extensive kids’ menu with a variety of chicken, beef and sushi combos for less than $10 that subvert the basic hot dog and macaroni and cheese options you see everywhere. In Glendale, the best place to really sit down and get away from the crowd is the oft-mentioned Din Tai Fung (177 Caruso Ave., (818) 551-5161, dintaifungusa.com) at the America at Brand. As my co-columnist Evelyn Garcia's 2018 beautifully written review states, “If you’ve tried their soup dumplings, which are definitely worth the potential two-hour wait, you need not read any further. If not, you need this in your life.” Evelyn's words ring just as true now as they did then. You may know Din Tai Fung as the place with a perpetual line out the door, which normally may be an issue, but this holiday season will actually do you some favors. Let me explain. With their check-in and text message system you pop into the front desk when you first arrive at the Americana and then commence with your shopping using their periodic text messages to make your way back to the restaurant. While technically just-outside of the Americana, my top choice for coffee in Glendale is Philz (252 S Brand Blvd., Suite A, (818) 844-8492, philzcoffee.com). A stone’s throw from the mall, Philz is the reprieve from everything you do not like about the

holiday season. Tired of seeing disheartened seasonal retail employees? Tired of nothing fitting or not being able to find what you want? Philz is stacked with baristas who possess a nearly unreal enthusiasm for coffee. You order at the counter and wait for your name to be called at which point a genuinely concerned barista has you taste test your drink and will help you switch things up until it fits your vision. It may not seem like a lot, but in a season where sometimes nothing seems to be going right, getting the perfect cup of coffee can be the win that makes all the difference and inspires you to put in another three hours of shopping. In Pasadena, Cafe 86 (36 W. Colorado Blvd., (626) 219-6915, cafe-86.com) is off the path just enough to step away from the madness but not get too far away. Cafe 86’s menu is a blend of boba classics and crowd-pleasing traditional coffee drinks, with their signature mixes of the two. The real treat at Cafe 86 though are their bakery items: like ube flan cupcakes, matcha brownies, ube pop tarts, and hosts of other desserts that are the furthest thing away from pecan pies and other holiday desserts you are sure to tire of sooner than later. If you are on Colorado hop into Cafe 86 grab a Nutella latte ($5.80) and leech off their wifi to pull up those coupons you know you have somewhere in the trenches of your email. I cannot bring myself to shout-out food court choices, because honestly if you are walking around the food court, you will either go for the place with the shortest line or the place handing out the best samples. Either way, I get it. Where I can be of assistance is helping you with the fast-casual options around. In Glendale, you have two burger heavyweights competing for your affection in an East Coast vs. West Coast burger off, Shake Shack and In-N-Out. Shake Shack (252 S. Brand Blvd., Glendale, (818) 858-1612, shakeshack.com) will hit the wallet a bit harder but offers alcohol, vegetarian options and a lower profile, meaning you can probably get a decent casual meal without sacrificing hours waiting for a table. If you’re a born and raised Southern Californian though, you know there is no better way to spend $5 than on an In-N-Out (119 S. Brand Blvd. and 310 N. Harvey Drive, Glendale, (800) 786-1000, locations.in-n-out.com/174) Double Double with grilled onions. You can’t go wrong here. In Pasadena, Poke Salad Bar (12 W. JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER ORCHESTRA WITH WYNTON MARSALIS, Big Band Holidays II (Blue Engine): HHH

A throwback to the days of supper clubs, danceable jazz and big orchestras, this sequel to 2015’s holiday release from the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis is impeccably arranged and produced, but is most interesting when backing vocalists. A previously unreleased solo rendition of “O Tannenbaum” by Aretha Franklin is attention-grabbing (the soul queen was an underrated pianist), but it’s the dependably superb Catherine Russell, who sings on three tracks (including Steve Allen’s lightly swinging “Cool Yule”), who really sparks things to life. jazz.org

KRISTIN KORB, That Time of Year (Storyville): HHHH Part of First Aid Kit’s Americana-folk-rock circle in Sweden, Lindell builds on the retro rock and soul elements of his 2017 EP “Little Less Blue” with this fulllength debut. Lead single “Stormy Waters” recounts his “shipwrecked” emotional response to a Swedish record label’s dismissal of initial demos; the rejected songs comprise the rest of this agreeable if unchallenging set. He’s no Van Morrison but Lindell’s delivery’s easy on the ears, and if you share his taste for Stax-era soul and ’60s-’70s rock, cue up “Whatever Happens” and the octave-spanning “Momentary Love.” jesperlindell.com

LOS LOBOS, Llegó Navidad (Rhino): HHHH

Arguably the most original holiday release of 2019, this 12-track collection from East LA’s revered lions arose from researching traditionals from Central, North and South America, which yielded an initial list of 150 songs. Moving and musically engaging, it ranges from the son jarocho call-and-response of “La Rama” to the Tex-Mex cheer of Freddy Fender’s “It’s Christmas Time in Texas,” the joyful low-rider groove of “¿Dónde Está Santa Claus?” and Willie Colón and Héctor Lavoe’s Carnaval-inspired “La Murga.” David Hidalgo and Louie Perez’s “Christmas and You,” set to a swoony ’50s R&B beat, sweetly reminds of the season’s family ties. loslobos.org

THE MCCRARY SISTERS, A Very McCrary Christmas (Rounder): HHH½

Long a secret weapon on other artists’ recordings, sisters Ann, Alfreda, Deborah and Regina McCrary deliver traditional hymns in gospel, jazz, R&B and Southern soul arrangements, with guest contributions from Shirley Caesar, Jerry Douglas, Alison Krauss, Buddy Miller and Keb’ Mo’. “Go Tell It on the Mountain” incorporates a percussion sample from the Staple Singers’ “Respect Yourself,” while the grooves and joyful harmonies of “Children Go Where I Send Thee,” “Away in a Manger,” “Jesus, Oh What a Wonderful Child” and “No Room at the Inn” invite communal connection. mccrarysisters.com

IDINA MENZEL, Christmas: A Season of Love (Decca): HHH½

In contrast to 2014’s “Holiday Wishes,” the Tony Award-winning actress and “Frozen” vocalist stretches out a bit, focusing on material with inclusive messages while elegant production and guests Billy Porter and Ariana Grande add show-biz sparkle. Pop standards “Christmas Time is Here” and a swoony “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” (featuring actor husband Aaron Lohr) bracket the Ladino-sung, Hanukkah-celebrating “Ocho Kandelikas,” while Menzel’s “come as you are” ballad “At This Table” (co-written with Jonas Myrin) and signature tune “Seasons of Love” from Jonathan Larson’s musical “Rent” provide Menzel intimate moments to vary her high-wattage delivery and

emphasize the holiday’s inclusive spirit. Idinamenzel. com

KEB’ MO’, Moonlight, Mistletoe & You (Concord): HHH

Mingling blues, jazz and midcentury pop styles, the LA-raised, Grammy-winning bluesman born Kevin Moore balances standards with feel-good originals like the humorous “Christmas is Annoying” and “Better Everyday” (whose “find more peace, make more love” message works year-round). Moore’s easy-grooving approach is most successful with Theodore Edwards’ “Santa Claus Santa Claus,” Charley Jordan’s preWWII acoustic blues “Santa Claus Blues,” and Koko Taylor’s “Merry, Merry Christmas,” although the latter’s ’80s-sounding thrum is jarring. The overall effect is overly smooth, but Moore’s heartfelt positivity will likely engage listeners. kebmo.com

NE-YO, Another Kind of Christmas (Capitol): HHH½ The stylish R&B hit-maker applies his polished croon to modern Christmas classics, notably Marvin Gaye’s “I Want to Come Home for Christmas” and Donny Hathaway’s “This Christmas,” plus sleek treatments of the Charles Brown-immortalized “Merry Christmas Baby” and Mel Tormé’s “The Christmas Song.” Producer Darhyl Camper’s “Talk About It” nods to family holiday dramas, while ceding the microphone to vocalists Candice Boyd (“Carol of the Bells”) and RaVaughn (“Someday at Christmas”) broadens the album’s variety. Neyothegentleman.com

PUSS N BOOTS, Faulkner County (Blue Note): HHH

“Shake your Christmas butt/ ’Til your cranky goes away/ …Eat shit, commercial smut/ Today’s Santa’s birthday”: Sasha Dobson, Norah Jones and Catherine Popper take an irreverent view of holiday proceedings with Popper’s “Christmas Butt,” the centerpiece of this slyly charming five-track EP. The eclectic trio’s collaboratively composed “Christmas All Over Again” sways to a country-jazz beat behind Jones’ sultry lead vocal, while the silken shimmy of their three-part harmonies during a live “Silent Night” hints at the camaraderie of their annual Christmas concerts. Pussnbootsmusic.com

VARIOUS ARTISTS, A Dualtone Christmas (Dualtone): HH½

Eight tracks of Americana, folk and indie-pop from Kathleen Edwards, Delta Spirit, Ivan & Alyosha, Amos Lee, the Lone Bellow, Mt. Joy, Langhorne Slim (a rollicking “Deck the Halls [With Boughs of Holly]”) and Wild Child. Less glossy than bigger-budget commercial releases, its charm is rooted in the low-key humanity emblemized by Edwards’ “It’s Christmastime (Let’s Just Survive)” and Lee’s soulful “Holiday Song” (“Alone my peace will start with me/ I want it for my family”). dualtone.bandcamp.com/album/a-dualtone-christmas

You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on this property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code.
