The holiday season is at hand and many people are already making yearend plans to travel and celebrate with friends and family. Yet there is one year-end plan that is often overlooked: taking steps to make the most of your health benefits. Doing so could help improve your health and save you money. Here are five health tips to consider before the end of the year: Get Ahead of Health Issues: People with employer-sponsored, individual, Medicare and Medicaid plans have access to many preventive services that can help detect diseases and encourage well-being. Take advantage of the various health screenings — such as blood pressure, cholesterol and depression — and timely vaccines, such as the flu shot, that are available through your health plan before year-end. Doing so now may give you a head start on those healthy New Year’s resolutions. Check with your health plan as many eligible preventive services are available at no additional cost, as long they are delivered by care providers in your plan’s network. Delay Non-Emergency Services: A growing number of employers and consumers are choosing health plans with higher deductibles; in fact, nearly 45 percent of Americans are enrolled in such plans, according to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention. If this applies to you, check if you have reached or exceeded your deductible, which is the amount you have to pay before insurance kicks in. If not, it may make sense to delay non-emergency services, such as a joint replacement, until 2020. The cost for those services would then apply to your 2020 deductible and out-of-pocket maximum, increasing the likelihood that your health plan would pay for more of your medical expenses for the remainder of the year.

Schedule Recommended Health Services: The opposite is true if you have already reached your deductible. In this case, check with your health care professional to schedule recommended medical services, as those will likely be covered (all or in part) by your health plan. If possible, tell your health care professional that you’ve reached your deductible and out-of-pocket maximum, and see if there’s any needed follow-up care that can be arranged before the end of the year. Understand Your Spending Accounts: Many people have spending accounts with funds earmarked for health care services. Health savings accounts (HSAs) offer tax-advantages, and the money can roll over from year to year. If you contribute money to your HSA before year-end, you can help pay for qualified medical services in 2020 or even later while lowering your taxable income for 2019. On the other hand, flexible spending accounts (FSAs) require the money be spent before the year ends, and

unused balances are not rolled over into the next calendar year. So if you have funds left in your FSA and you need to order contact lenses, schedule a dental cleaning or refill prescriptions, for example, now’s the time to do that. Prepare to Use Your 2020 Benefits: This year’s open-enrollment season is wrapping up. According to a recent UnitedHealthcare survey, more than one-third (36 percent) of Americans said they devoted less than one hour to the process, meaning they may not have explored some of the many options available to them. Before the year is out, take time to review your health plan and check with your employer’s HR department to determine what well-being incentives or other resources might be available when 2020 starts. Nearly 75 percent of employers offer well-being programs, with an average incentive of $762 annually, according to a recent study by the National Business Group on Health. By finding out now what incentives are available to you, you can help prepare yourself to start earning all or some of those rewards starting New Year’s Day. ~ REBECCA MADSEN CHIEF CONSUMER OFFICER UNITEDHEALTHCARE

GOOD QUESTIONS

I admire the commitment and passion of climate protesters (“The Kids Are Not Alright,” Dec. 5, 2019). That said, how many protesters drive cars? How many of their parents drive sport utility vehicles or vans that they are not about to give up? Are protesters willing to give up their expensive toys — cameras, cell phones, computers and flat-screen televisions — made all or in part with petrochemicals? More importantly, are they willing to address immigration and population — the engines that drive every economic, environmental and social problem in California — or adopt a politically correct or neutral position like the Sierra Club? Just asking. ~ LES HAMMER GLENDALE

THE RIGHT TO VOTE

ROSE PARADE FLOAT ‘YEARS OF HOPE, YEARS OF COURAGE’ CELEBRATES CENTENNIAL OF THE 19TH AMENDMENT RATIFICATION Spectacles — human beings are apparently “wired” to adore or abhor them. And I don’t mean the eyeglasses kind of spectacles. I’m talking about kicking up a fuss, making a scene, creating big waves of people, horses, bands, floats, and … the Statue of Liberty? On Jan. 1, look for Ms. Liberty in the Rose Parade. You can’t miss her; she’s 30 feet tall, wearing a “Votes for Women” sash, and her tablet has the 19th Amendment, the amendment that women fought hard to win in order to vote, like “real” citizens. Women will be front and center in this parade: the city of South Pasadena also has a suffrage-themed float, and the Tournament of Roses Association itself is led by Laura Farber. She’s a dynamic leader — the third woman and first Latina as its president. The float’s name is “Years of Hope, Years of Courage,” and the motto is “Upon their shoulders, we won the vote. Upon our shoulders, we protect the vote. We celebrate and build for the future.” For nearly 100 years before 1920, women who knew they’d never live long enough to vote dedicated their lives to making sure their descendants could… whether they were women or people of color of both genders. Considering their sacrifice, voting in any election is imperative; in 2020, it is vital. Today, thanks to the efforts of a small but mighty group of women led by Nan Johnson, a retired professor at Rochester University in New York, the dream of having a Rose Parade float honoring women’s suffrage has become a reality. It is also a dream come true for many ardent women’s history and rights activists. Ms. Johnson and too many people to name got the float project rolling, while Martha Wheelock — a board member of the National Women’s History Alliance, a 501c3 — has been the liaison so that the donations for the float are tax-deductible. As the float passes by or appears on your TV screen, look for 100 women (and a few men) walking in period attire behind it, along with with notable people riding on it. I’ll be one of the “Out-Walkers” as they are called, and Dolores Huerta will be on the float, joined by descendants of heroes like Ida B. Wells, Harriett Ross Tubman and Frederick Douglass. Like the Statue of Liberty, they will wear the sash of gold, purple and white — the colors of the US Women’s suffrage movement. The Out-Walkers are not only following the float but also a tradition started by Alice Paul in 1913. Alice, along with Lucy Burns, organized the first march down Pennsylvania Avenue to draw attention to the fact that only one-half of US citizens could vote: men. Women were expected to not be seen in public, let alone marching in a parade. Horrors! And voting? Poppycock — that was for men only. To win the vote for women, Ms. Paul exhorted girls and women to break the rules, make a ruckus, create a spectacle, escape their corsets, and the rigid custom of infantilizing females. We were treated like children, and like kids we were expected to be seen and not heard. In my own life, I remember my mother — usually under her breath, to avoid making a scene — exhorting me to “not make a spectacle of myself.” Boy, did that admonition backfire! Not all women won the right to vote in 1920. Women of color were mainly left out; not only were they restricted from marching in suffrage parades, but there were policies to prevent them from voting in many states. Pasadena Celebrates 2020 is an intersectional tribute to those who were omitted in the past. I am honored to march for my ancestors, especially my grandmothers Aline and Edna, who were both married with children by the time they could vote. I’m also marching for South Dakota, my home state, the 36th original ratifier of the 19th Amendment. I’ll be joined by 35 other Out-Walkers representing their states. We are overjoyed to make “spectacles” of ourselves! And remember what author Laurel Thatcher Ulrich said: “Well-behaved women seldom make history.” PS ... THE ROSE PARADE PUTS HISTORY IN THE SPOTLIGHT BY KEVIN UHRICH

R

ain is rare on New Year’s Day in Pasadena, but it happens. Starting in 1895, five years after the first floral spectacular, it rained a total of 10 times, the latest downpour coming in 2006. The one before that occurred in 1955 – the seventh time in 10 decades. That year, US Supreme Court Chief Justice Earl Warren served as grand marshal, fresh from the nine-member court’s unanimous decision the previous year to end segregation in public schools in the case Brown v. Board of Education. Ironically, in 2006, another history-making Supreme Court justice, Sandra Day O’Connor, in 1981 the first woman appointed to the High Court, led the parade. This historical coincidence — with rain falling on Warren, who also famously led the investigation into the 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy and in 1943 served as grand marshal when he was governor of California, and now on O’Connor — was not lost on me. Having seen more than my fair share of Rose Parades, I would have been fine with watching this one on Channel 5. But my significant other, who each year insists on seeing the entire event, was having none of that. Of course, she was impressed by O’Connor, who retired later that year after 25 years on the bench. But she also wanted to see the spectacular floats, the bands, the horses, the pageantry. So we stayed, and after more than two hours we were drenched. As choosing political luminaries such as Warren and O’Connor illustrates, the grand marshals are very important to the overall event, this year the honor bestowed upon multiple award-winning actress Rita Moreno, Olympic Gold and Silver Medalist Laurie Hernandez and actress Gina Torres, chosen by this year’s TofR President Laura Farber, the first Latina to serve in that role, to fit the theme, “The Power of Hope.” But, as my girlfriend shows, grand marshals are not the only elements of the parade that people come to see each year. The Rose Parade features three types of entries: Floral decorated floats, which are sponsored by participating corporations or community organizations, equestrian units and marching bands. The only cars in the parade are those that carry the grand marshals, the mayor of Pasadena, the Rose Bowl Game Hall of Fame inductees, and that year’s TofR president. There will be 39 floats this year, most of them made by perennial float builders Phoenix Decorating Co. and Fiesta Parade Floats, both of Irwindale, and AES, or Artistic Entertainment Services of Azusa. In addition, there will be five others: one for the Opening Spectacular, another for the Grand Finale, still another for the 2020 Royal Court, and two representing the two teams playing in the 106th Rose Bowl Game later that day, the Oregon Ducks and the Wisconsin Badgers. Some 935 organization volunteers donate an astonishing 80,000 hours to the cause throughout the year. Still other volunteers work on applying flowers to the floats docked at their various locations until the very last day. Like most other political dignitaries asked to serve as grand marshal – Herbert Hoover, Richard Nixon (twice), John Wayne, Walt Disney, Bob Hope, Gerald Ford – Warren and 12 PASADENA WEEKLY | 12.26.19

O’Connor were both Republicans. And in another irony of history, both presided over national political and social storms in the realms of civil rights and equal rights during their respective times on the bench. A man of Swedish and Norwegian stock, Warren was considered a “liberal Republican” when he was governor of California, before being nominated for Supreme Court Chief Justice by President Dwight Eisenhower in 1953. Ike was also a Rose Parade grand marshal in 1951 (when he was a general, having Corporal Robert S. Gray sit in for him), and in 1964, still a calming national influence just more than a month after the assassination of Kennedy, his successor. In the Brown case of 1954, Warren actually lobbied the other justices to agree with his controversial majority opinion to desegregate public schools, and they all did. This apparently displeased Ike. Nevertheless, Eisenhower respected the rule of law. He even sent troops to Little Rock in 1957 to enforce “Warren’s law.” O’Connor grew up in Texas, attended Stanford and raised a family in Arizona while holding elected office in that state’s Legislature. She faced a similar test in 1992 with Planned Parenthood of SE Pennsylvania v. Casey, an abortion rights case. She was a primary author of the majority opinion overturning portions of onerous legislation which, in part, would have required women to notify their mates before seeking an abortion. In a complicated decision, the Court upheld the constitutional right to have an abortion that was established in Roe v. Wade in 1973, but altered the standard for analyzing restrictions on that right. In O’Connor’s part of the of opinion, spousal notification was a recipe for injury or death for the woman, and most of her colleagues agreed. Both Warren and O’Connor weathered torrential political storms for their decisions in their two hallmark cases; a consequence of doing their duty, which was following the rule of law and upholding the rights of minorities, women and others among America’s underprotected underclasses. Progress is never easy, and theirs were rulings that helped pave the way for women and members of racial minorities to achieve things so great that they’ve since earned long overdue praise, admiration and positions of power. In his time, Warren could not have imagined a woman or a minority person as TofR president or grand marshal, but in 2005 it was the TofR’s first woman president, Libby Evans Wright, who selected O’Connor. Likewise, O’Connor might have never imagined a minority person being chosen as president, but that also happened, with Gerald Freeny, who is African American, selected president for 2019, with Chaka Khan serving as grand marshal. As of this writing, Dec. 20, extended forecasts show a 10 percent chance of rain on Dec. 29, a 20 percent chance on Dec. 30, a 40 percent chance on New Year’s Eve, with showers in the forecast, and a 20 percent chance on the New Year’s Day, with mostly sunny skies forecast by weather.com, the Weather Channel’s website. Speaking from experience, if it does rain, grab your umbrella, put on a hat and a raincoat and tough it out. You may get wet, but, like me, you’ll be glad you witnessed history on parade. n

MATCHUP BETWEEN OREGON AND WISCONSIN PROMISES TO BE AMONG TOP NEW YEAR GAMES BY ANDRE COLEMAN

I

n a rematch of their 2012 contest, the Pac-12 Champion No. 6 Oregon Ducks will face the No. 8 Wisconsin Badgers in the Rose Bowl Game on New Year’s Day. In that holiday contest, Oregon won by a touchdown in a game that ended with a score of 45-38, just as Wisconsin was driving toward a potentially gametying touchdown. That’s one reason why the game is expected to be so widely watched. Another is the Rose Bowl — the Granddaddy of Them All — is only one of two bowl games with two teams ranked inside the top 10 outside of the College Football Playoff Semifinals. “It’s the Rose Bowl,” said Tom Fornelli of CBS Sports. “It’s my favorite bowl game, and it always will be. Also, as typically happens, it’s an interesting matchup between two similar teams. Two good teams playing in one of the most picturesque settings in sport. What’s not to like?” Yahoo Sports has ranked the game as the third best bowl behind the two playoff semifinals, noting that the matchup will feature two highly touted NFL prospects. Neither team backed into the game. For at least a few weeks, the Rose Bowl was considered a best-case scenario for both squads, and there shouldn’t be any lack of motivation on either side. While bowl games across the board are becoming less meaningful outside of the playoff series, this one has maintained an aura of importance. Wisconsin is coming off a 34-21 drubbing at the hands of the top-ranked Big Ten champs Ohio State Buckeyes. And, according to Paul Myberg of USA Today, there remains some sense of a missed opportunity stemming from Oregon’s largely

14 PASADENA WEEKLY | 12.26.19

avoidable loss to Arizona State last month. Oregon fell out of the Top 10 after losing to the Sun Devils, but fought their way back up the ladder by defeating Utah to win the Pac-12 title. “A win there would’ve sent the Ducks into Friday night’s Pac-12 championship with just one loss, making the date with Utah a potential play-in game for the playoff,” Myberg said. “What could’ve been. But the Ducks capitalized on the opportunity and pulled off a hugely impressive 37-15 win to salvage what should still be viewed as a successful finish: Oregon will head to the Rose Bowl for the first time since 2015 and the seventh time in program history.” Next year, Oregon’s Justin Herbert will enter the NFL draft as one of the top quarterback prospects. Wisconsin running back Jonathan Taylor is also expected to enter the NFL draft following the Rose Bowl. Taylor has 1,909 rushing yards, the second most in the country. Taylor is seeking to become the first player since Ricky Williams to lead the country in rushing in back-to-back seasons, and just the second player in Division I history to rush for 2,000 yards in consecutive seasons. Herbert is attempting to become the third quarterback to lead Oregon to a Rose Bowl win in the past 100 years. Standing 6 feet, 6 inches tall, and weighing 237 pounds, Herbert threw just five interceptions this year. Wisconsin QB Jack Coan had just four turnovers this year. But both offenses could struggle. Oregon is ninth in scoring defense, allowing just 15.7 points per game, Wisconsin has the 10th best defense in the country, allowing 16.1 points per game. n

ROSE QUEEN CAMILLE KENNEDY IS HEAVILY INSPIRED BY EASTERN CULTURE BY SHEILA MENDES COLEMAN

R

ose Queen Camille Kennedy’s father Tim grew up in Hawaii and was heavily influenced by Japanese culture. That influence was passed down to Camille after she spent several months in Japan when she was 15. The experience stayed with the 102nd Rose Queen, who now hopes to attend either Waseda University in Tokyo or Asia Pacific University in Kyushu where she plans to pursue a liberal arts degree in Japanese linguistics, social sciences, or culture and media studies. Queen Kennedy and the Royal Court will ride on the Tournament of Roses float during the Rose Parade on New Year’s Day and preside over the Rose Bowl Football Game. They will mark 102 years in 2020 as ambassadors of the Tournament of Roses and the Pasadena community. Each court member also receives a $7,500 scholarship. Kennedy said she remembers watching the parade on a computer while she was in Japan. “One of the experiences that I remember well is I sat on New Year’s Day and watched the Rose Parade on the computer with my host family,” she said. “I said, ‘Do you know what this is?’ And they were like, ‘No, what is it?’ And now they’re excited to see it this year and I get to say, ‘Look, that’ll be me.’” The Royal Court was selected from more than 600 applicants. Following the initial interview sessions, the Queen and Court Committee met and determined who to invite for the second round of interviews. About 250 young women were asked to return. Third round interviews narrowed the field down to about 75 applicants and additional interviews winnowed the Royal Court finalists to approximately 25, from whom the seven Royal Court members were selected.

16 PASADENA WEEKLY | 12.26.19

The committee evaluated the finalists on their public speaking skills, academic achievements, leadership experience and community and school involvement. Along with Kennedy, South Pasadena High School Senior Cole Fox, Emilie Risha, a senior at Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, Rukan Saif, a senior at Arcadia High School, Michael Wilkins, a senior at Maranatha High School and two seniors at Marshall Fundamental School, Reese Rosental Saporito and Mia Thorsen, were chosen as finalists. Kennedy was coronated on Oct. 22 at the Pasadena Playhouse by Tournament of Roses President Laura Farber. During the coronation ceremony, Farber presented Rose Queen Camille with a Mikimoto crown featuring more than 600 cultured pearls and six carats of diamonds. “I’m so incredibly honored to be stepping up into this role,” Camille said. “I hope I can do my best to represent Pasadena as a community.” The LaSalle College Preparatory senior lives in Pasadena with her parents and her younger sisters Ava and Esme She is a member of LaSalle’s theater troupe. Kennedy has appeared in three productions, including a lead role “City of Angels.” Camille is also a member of the after school choral group and the Support Our Troops Club. She enjoys listening to music, cooking and working out. When asked if she expected the win, Kennedy said it didn’t even cross her mind. “As a Pasadena girl, I thought that the Tournament of Roses was — as my Royal Court members have said — a rite of passage,” she said. “It’s just something that you do; you don’t think too much about it.” n

CO-GRAND MARSHALS RITA MORENO, GINA TORRES AND LAURIE HERNANDEZ EXEMPLIFY ROSE PARADE THEME, ‘THE POWER OF HOPE’ BY JANA J. MONJI

R

ita Moreno is one of 15 people to win an Academy Award, a Tony Award, an Emmy Award (two), and a Grammy Award. But the entertainment superstar is quick to point out that “it’s a dream come true” to be named one of three grand marshals — along with award-winning actress Gina Torres and Olympic Gold- and Silver-medal gymnast Laurie Hernandez — of the 2020 Rose Parade, this year themed “The Power of Hope.” “I can only tell you I am absolutely thrilled,” the Los Angeles Times reports the remarkably youthful looking 87-year-old “West Side Story” star saying. A recipient of the Kennedy Center Honor for her lifetime contributions to American culture, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush, Moreno has also been awarded the National Medal of Arts. In addition, Moreno lends her support to issues such as racial equality, hunger, early childhood education, as well as health issues like HIV, breast cancer, heart disease and diabetes. Moreno was among many celebrities to take part in the historic march on Washington on August 28, 1963 and has since been involved with many civic, cultural and charitable organizations, including the Jackie Robinson Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts and the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities. The three women were named co-grand marshals back in mid-October by this year’s Tournament of Roses President Lauren Farber, the third woman and first Latina to serve as Tournament of Roses president. The three stars will ride in the Rose Parade on New Year’s Day and join in the pregame celebration of the 106th Rose Bowl Game later that afternoon. “The 2020 theme is ‘The Power of Hope.’ With hope, we can aspire to do better and inspire others to reach higher; hope never quits; with hope anything, in fact everything is possible,” Farber said during the grand marshal naming ceremony at Tournament House.

18 PASADENA WEEKLY | 12.26.19

“Rita Moreno, Gina Torres and Laurie Hernandez epitomize hope,” says Farber. “Through their talent, efforts, persistence and dedication,” the statement reads, “they have achieved excellence and have given back to the world stories of hope, dreams fulfilled, dignity, respect and inspiration. They have provided el Poder de La Esperanza para todo el mundo!” The 19-year-old Hernandez, a second-generation American, earned Olympic Gold and Silver medals as a member of the 2016 US Olympic Gymnastics Team in Rio de Janeiro. Her grandparents are Puerto Rican, making her the first US-born Latina to make the US team since 1984. Along with her gymnastic skills, Hernandez is also a terrific dancer, winning ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” competition. She currently serves as a cohost of “American Ninja Warrior Junior” and is the voice of Valeria on Nickelodeon’s “Middle School Moguls.” If all that weren’t enough, Hernandez has also authored two books: “I Got This: To Gold and Beyond,” and a children’s picture book titled “She Got This,” each appearing on The New York Times Best Seller’s list. Hernandez plans to compete again in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. Torres, who was born in Manhattan into a close-knit Cuban family, was raised in the Bronx. Today, the 50-year-old actress is famous for her work in “Suits,” “Alias,” “Firefly” and HBO’s “Westworld” series. Her role as Jessica on “Suits” won her the National Hispanic Media Coalition’s Award for Outstanding Performance in a Television Series, and the Visionary Award from the LA Femme Film Festival. “With hope, we can aspire to do better and inspire others to reach higher; hope never quits; with hope anything, in fact everything is possible. Rita Moreno, Gina Torres, and Laurie Hernandez epitomize hope,” Farber said. n

LEGAL TRAILBLAZER LAURA FARBER IS THE FIRST LATINA TO LEAD THE TOURNAMENT OF ROSES BY ANDRE COLEMAN

T

he Tournament of Roses Association’s first Latina President Laura Farber’s theme of this year’s Rose Parade, “The Power of Hope,” applies to both the parade and her life. Born in Buenos Aires, Farber’s native language is Spanish. Her family came to the US in the early 1970s, after the political climate there became unstable. “They left everything, everyone,” Farber said of her mother and father. “They came with nothing. They didn’t know anyone. They didn’t know the culture, the language, nothing,” she said. But they did have hope, and “ they thought they would have more opportunities here. And freedom.” Her parents were able to obtain work in Santa Barbara while they studied at UC Santa Barbara. After that, her family moved to Monterey Park after her now-retired father began working at a biochemical firm. Today, Farber resides with her husband Tomas Lopez in South Pasadena. They have two college-age children, Christopher and Jessica Lopez, who currently attend school on the East Coast. “With hope — anything, in fact, everything is possible,” said Farber in a prepared statement. “Hope is more than simply the possibility of fulfillment. Hope is dignity and respect, joy and happiness, aspiration and achievement. Hope never, ever quits. Through hope, we can aspire to be our best and in turn inspire those around us to reach higher.” Farber earned her bachelor’s degree, cum laude, in 1987 from UCLA. She earned her juris doctorate, also cum laude, in 1990 from Georgetown University. Farber will lead the tournament for the 2019-2020 parade season and Rose Bowl college football game. She succeeded Gerald Freeny, the association’s first African-American president. Farber joined the Tournament of Roses as a volunteer in 1993. She was elected to the Executive Committee in 2012. Since then she has served on and chaired various committees, including the Decorating Places Committee, the Formation Area Committee, and the Judging and the Membership Development Committee. Farber is not only the Tournament’s first Latina president, but also the third woman to don the red jacket and lead the organization. Libby Evans Wright broke the gender barrier when she led the organization in 2005-06. In 2011-12, Sally Bixby also held the honor. Farber is also the third minority to hold the honor. Richard L. Chinen became the first Asian American to lead the Tournament when he led the organization in 20142015. In 2018-19, Freeny became the first African American to hold the organization. Farber will hold the honor as the nation celebrates the centennial anniversary of women gaining the right to vote. Farber is a partner at the Pasadena-based law firm Hahn & Hahn. She will be the fifth employee of the firm to lead the Tournament of Roses. Louis Vincenti (1948), Stanley Hahn (1963), William Johnstone (1997) and R. Scott Jenkins (2014) also led the tournament, according to the Hahn & Hahn website. Farber is a member of the American Bar Association (ABA) and serves as California’s representative to the ABA’s House of Delegates. She also chairs the ABA’s Latin American and Caribbean Initiative Council and is a member of its Rule of Law Initiative Board and its Nominations Steering Committee. Earlier this year, the Los Angeles Business Journal recognized Farber as one of LA’s 75 most influential women attorneys, and she’s been named one of National Law Journal’s Elite Boutique Trailblazers. n

POLICE WILL USE NEW TRAFFIC BARRIERS AT ROSE BOWL GAME AND ROSE PARADE BY ANDRE COLEMAN

P

asadena Police will upgrade its traffic barriers as part of the security detail at this year’s Rose Bowl Parade. “We have not changed any previous tactics other than to solidify against vehicle borne assaults,” said Lt. Johnny Mercado. “In place of water barriers, we are using Archer barriers.” At recent parades, 400 water-filled barriers were positioned at 65 street intersections and 40 private business driveway aprons along the parade route, according to a city report. Water-filled barriers have been used since 2017 in response to terror incidents in Europe. Terrorists behind the wheel of vans and trucks killed and wounded scores of pedestrians and police officers domestically and internationally between 2016 and 2018 in New York City, Barcelona Spain, London and Nice, France. According to Mercado, water barriers can be moved and do not have the stopping power that the Archer barriers provide. The barriers, which at nearly $7,000 a piece cost the city $550,000, are made of reinforced steel and can be placed side by side to provide enough force to stop a ramming vehicle. “The Archer vehicle barriers will replace the water barriers currently deployed during New Year’s operations,” the Police Department’s report said. “The Archer barriers provide more protection to floats, spectators, city and Tournament of Roses employees involved with the Rose Parade.” The new barriers are part of US Department of Homeland Security (DHS)-qualified anti-terrorism technology. Pasadena Police often add new tactics as part of parade security based on terrorist tactics. Over the past several years, law enforcement officials have been forced to be ready to respond to terrorist attacks locally and internationally when planning security for the parade. This year is no different. Shortly before the 2019 parade, four people were killed as the result of a shooting spree in Strasbourg, France. Cherif Chekat, 29, the man believed responsible for the shootings, was shot dead after police confronted him. The Strasbourg shooting was the latest in a series of deadly attacks that have claimed more than 200 lives in France since 2015.

22 PASADENA WEEKLY | 12.26.19

In the 2018 parade, increased security focused on elevated areas along the parade route in response to the shooting in Las Vegas during a music festival which left 58 people dead and hundreds injured. For the 2017 parade, officials put up barricades after the three suicide bombers struck outside the Stade de France in Saint-Denis during a soccer match. That attack was followed by several mass shootings at cafés and restaurants and a suicide bombing that left more than 100 people dead. At the 2016 parade and football game, security was increased after the terror attack in San Bernardino, when an ISIS sympathizer opened fire during a Christmas Party, killing 14 people and wounding 22 others. Security has been beefed up at the event since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, DC. Last year, the Pasadena City Council voted to increase its security budget for the festivities from $1.1 million to $1.5 million. In a staff report, Police Chief John Perez called the increase “necessary due to the potential for [LA County Sheriff’s Department] to increase the hourly rates for personnel … The increase also includes additional hours for increased staffing at New Year’s activities based on threat assessments. The possibility of adding personnel to ensure a safe event may occur shortly before events begin, allowing minimal time for review and approval by City Council.” Besides Pasadena police and sheriff’s deputies, extra security will also be provided by the California Highway Patrol officers and federal authorities, including the Department of Homeland Security and the US Secret Service. Undercover law enforcement officers will also patrol the parade route and the game. Local officials would not reveal how many agents would be operating undercover. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will also impose a no-fly zone over the parade and the Rose Bowl. Drones are prohibited at the parade and the game. A B-2 Stealth bomber will fly over the parade as it gets under way. Besides the regular police presence, there will be a dozen so-called rapid response teams at ground-level and air surveillance that can monitor the entire parade route. “We do not have any active incidents we are tracking,” Mercado said. “We are tracking local state and national events to make sure we are staying in front of security and to make sure people are safe at both events.” n

BASEBALL ANNOUNCER JAIME JARRÍN, ‘SESAME STREET’S’ SONIA MANZANO AND ASTRONAUT ELLEN OCHOA HONORED IN ROSE PARADE

O

n New Year’s Day, Jaime Jarrín, Sonia Manzano and Ellen Ochoa — who exemplify the theme of the 2020 Rose Parade, “The Power of Hope” — will ride together down Colorado Boulevard in a 1915 Pierce Arrow Model 48 made in Buffalo, New York, the Tournament of Roses Association recently announced. “These three amazing individuals exemplify the power of hope in both how they’ve aspired to be their best and how they’ve inspired those around them to reach higher,” said Tournament of Roses President Laura Farber. “With hope anything, in fact everything, is possible. Hope is more than simply the possibility of fulfillment. Hope is dignity and respect, joy and happiness, aspiration and achievement.” “The Spanish Voice of the Dodgers,” Jaime Jarrín is one of the most recognizable voices in all of sports broadcasting. Jarrin has been calling Dodger games since 1959. Last season, the Hall of Famer was added to the club’s Ring of Honor with his name being permanently affixed to Dodger Stadium. In 1998, he was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. Also in 1998, Jarrin received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He is a member of both the California Broadcasters’ Association Halls of Fame and the Southern California Sports Broadcasters’ Association, which awarded him the organization’s Vin Scully Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019. For more than 40 years, Sonia Manzano has inspired, educated and delighted children and families as “Maria” on “Sesame Street.” Named among the 25 Greatest Latino Role Models Ever by Latina Magazine, Manzano broke ground as one of the first Hispanic characters on national television. Throughout her career, she has continued to contribute to enriching diversity on television, on the stage and in the educational realm. A first-generation American of Latin descent, Manzano’s tale is one of perseverance and courage as she overcame countless obstacles to become one of the most influential Latinas in television. The first Hispanic woman to go to space when she served on a nine-day mission aboard the shuttle Discovery, Ellen Ochoa has flown in space four times, logging nearly 1,000 hours. She was the 11th director of NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, from 2013 until her retirement in May 2018. Prior to her astronaut career, Dr. Ochoa was a research engineer and an inventor, with three patents for optical systems. Ochoa currently serves on several boards, including as vice chair of the National Science Board. With six schools named for her, she has been inducted into the Astronaut Hall of Fame, the California Hall of Fame, and the International Air & Space Hall of Fame. n

LOS LOBOS, ‘AMERICAN IDOL’ RUNNER-UP ALEJANDRO ARANDA (SCARYPOOLPARTY), AND THE CHINO HILLS DANCE TEAM TO PERFORM IN ROSE PARADE’S GRAND FINALE, ‘WHERE FLOWERS MEET FOOTBALL’ BY JERRY CORNELIUS

L

os Lobos, winners of three Grammy Awards and a Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, will be performing in the Rose Parade’s Grand Finale near the corner of Orange Grove and Colorado boulevards immediately following the parade. Joining the legendary group is Alejandro Aranda, who is perhaps better known to his many fans as “Scarypoolparty,” who boasts 80 million social media views from the success of his back-to-back-to-back singles “Tonight,” “Cholo Love” and “DIAMONDS.” Fresh off his runner-up performance on “American Idol,” the Pomona native joins Los Lobos performing a mash up of Los Lobos classics, including the infectious “La Bamba,” and “Come On” while looping in some of Scarypoolparty’s own music, including “Tonight.” Backing up the musical artists will be members of the Chino Hills Dance Team, the Tournament of Roses announced in early December. Los Lobos, which has performed many times in Pasadena over the years, is best known for such songs as “La Bamba,” first made famous by singer Ritchie Valens. The band from East LA, influenced by rock and roll, Tex-Mex, country, zydeco, folk, R&B, blues, brown-eyed soul, and traditional music such as cumbia, boleros and norteños, became an international sensation with that song. Some of their other hits since the early 1980s include “Anselma,” “How Will the Wolf Survive?” “...And a Time to Dance.” In 2015, the group was nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and in 2018, they were inducted into Austin City Limits Hall of Fame. Band members include David Hidalgo, vocals, guitar, accordion, fiddle and requinto jarocho; Louie Pérez, drums, guitar, jarana huasteca and vocals; Cesar Rosas, vocals, guitar and bajo sexto; Conrad Lozano, bass, guitarron and vocals ; and Steve Berlin, keyboards and woodwinds. Berlin joined the band in 1984. The other members have been with the group since 1973. Former members are Francisco “Frank” González, vocals, mandolin and arpa jarocha, who played with the band from 1973 to 1976, and Richard Escalante, who sang and played from 1973 to 1974. Last year’s Grand Finale singer was pop sensation Anne Marie. The Grand Finale, also known as “Where Flowers Meet Football,” features a surprise celebrity guest throwing a team-branded football directly from the parade route which then magically soars past local landmarks until it arrives at the Rose Bowl, where it is caught by another notable personality. Who’s going to make the throw this year? Who’s going to make the catch? Stay tuned for the surprise reveal. n

Pizza Heaven ENJOY SELF-SERVE BEER AND SO MUCH MORE AT NEW AND IMPROVED MAMMA’S BRICK OVEN PIZZA & PASTA

STORY BY MICHAEL SPRAGUE | PHOTOS BY: DANNY LIAO

M

amma’s Brick Oven Pizza & Pasta has moved from its Rosemead Boulevard address in Pasadena into a larger, more modern location in South Pasadena, one four times bigger and featuring an expanded menu and a gamified “drink wall” that makes choosing a beer way more fun than it should be. The new spot features industrial decor with plenty of room at tables and benches for groups, tons of food and room to move around and refill your drinks without feeling cramped. The New Yorkstyle pizza that was the centerpiece of the old menu has not gone anywhere. Joined by some fun new appetizers and starters, the pizza is still the major feature of this fast-casual family favorite. The self-serve beer wall is a haven for adventurous drinkers and indecisive tasters alike. Over 20 beer, wine and cocktail choices line the rear wall of Mamma’s. The beer wall is powered by keycards that can be loaded to purchase any of the available drinks for a set price per ounce. Instructions for achieving the perfect pour are featured in simple graphics on the wall (disregard at your own embarrassment when you walk back to the table with two inches of foam). Different styles of beer glasses are on the side, so you get to choose whether to fill eight ounces of a pilsner glass or grab a flight paddle and fill up as many tasters as your heart desires. There are about 20 different beers, a few wine choices and two cocktails — a mai tai and a margarita. The wall contains a good mix of popular domestics as well as more eclectic craft beers from local breweries. Understandably, the wine and cocktails cost a little more per ounce than say Coors Light and 805. I loaded up a card with $25 which was just enough for all four adults in my party to explore their tastes at the beer wall. CONTINUED ON PAGE 34

PIZZA HEAVEN

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 32

Mamma’s offers the comfort of a classic, family-friendly, after-a-game pizza joint but punched up with that quintessential flare needed to compete in the Pasadena area. All the classic pizza parlor notes are there: from the large slices of New York-style pizza, the parmesan and pepper shakers, and red sauce pastas, while at the same time boasting a much cooler space than the pizza parlors you used to beg your parents to go to after Little League. The real kicker though is how reasonably priced the larger family combos are. I had a group of six: four adults and two little ones. The family special ($34.99) came with a large, two topping pizza, 12 garlic knots, a house salad and a choice of two pastas, including baked ziti, spaghetti, manicotti, or penne arrabiata. For less than $40 we had more than enough food for all of us to eat and head home with some leftovers. The salad was pleasantly better than an afterthought, which is sometimes the best that can be said for a side salad. Tossed spring greens, tomatoes and olives are served with your choice of dressings and enough to share. Garlic knots by the dozen is just the way you want them. Warm, coated in buttery garlic goodness and served fresh from the oven with sauce for dipping, these knots did not disappoint. We did not save any for later. The pasta choices were served in baking dishes, hot and smothered in gooey, bubbling cheese and they offered enough to eat and take some home. The pastas were perfectly cooked al dente, generously stuffed with cheese and bathed in rich, flavorful sauces. The large pizza is worthy of the title; sometimes a large pizza seems like a joke. This is legitimately 16 inches and eight to 10 slices. New York style, with a thin, crispy crust, the pizza was fresh tasting and served hot from the namesake

brick oven. There are plenty of veggie and meat choices for topping your pizza, as well as a handful of gourmet choices for another dollar and some change. There are a variety of pasta entrees, like the popular fettuccine alfredo, and meat and eggplant options as well. The sauces are slow simmered and have a complexity of flavor not generally found at a casual pizza place. Mamma’s plays up the traditional a pizza place of yesteryear, keeping with the wide slices and family-friendly aspect but injects some 2019 fun in there with macaroni and cheese, buffalo and barbecued chicken pizzas, and a variety of tasty starters. Signature pizzas are offered by the slice along with rice balls, subs, wings and calzonetype pizza rolls. The vibe is family-friendly or weekend hangout and the choices are fresh, casual, and fun. I visited Mamma’s in their first week at the new location. The chaos of a soft opening and working out the kinks of a whole new floor layout and increased demand can be hard on businesses at every level. So the level of accountability and professionalism shown by the Mamma’s staff was admirable. The dining room was bustling and customers were popping in and out with orders to go. Service was friendly and fast and all requests were met with a smile and expedient accommodation. Signs on tables explain the restaurant is in its soft opening and encourage customers to email management with any feedback. I visit a lot of restaurants in their infancy and the commitment and willingness to tackle issues head on truly puts Mamma’s in a category of its own. n A version of this review appeared in our Aug. 29 edition.

DON’T GIVE UP

SET FEWER ACHIEVABLE RESOLUTIONS THIS NEW YEAR Dear Patti, My teenage daughter, Layla, is very intelligent but a bit of a cynic for someone so young. When I asked her what her New Year’s resolution was going to be, she disdainfully pointed out that everybody we know — including our whole family — always fails at staying committed to their yearly resolutions. She, therefore, doesn’t see the point in creating goals that are already doomed. I realize she’s probably half kidding, but seriously, I don’t want Layla to give up on growing and improving before she even tries. How do I support and inspire my daughter to pick a New Year’s resolution, stick with it and successfully reach her goal?.

— Evelyn Dear Evelyn, Layla is correct. Many Americans embrace the tradition of promising themselves major changes at the beginning of a new year and yet are unable to sustain the momentum needed throughout the year. A recent research study about New Year’s resolutions showed that only 12 percent of participants actually achieved their goals. While time, difficulty and distractions factor heavily in the abandonment of these promises we make to ourselves, some of the problem can also be traced to not having a clear vision to begin with. The most common promises people make to themselves every Jan. 1 include: • Lose weight • Quit addictive habits • Change careers • Re-awaken dormant talents • Stick to a budget • Improve personal relationships • Achieve a long-held dream • Exercise more • Travel to new places Once Layla looks these over, have her write down her own list of resolutions. Encourage her to focus on her desire to make her life better, a chance for renewal and a dream of a new self that resonates deep inside of her. Then, prioritize what’s most important and make a definite decision on what she wants to change about her life and truly change it. Guide Layla through a thoughtful self-analysis to determine what’s most important to her and narrow the list down to five. These five objectives should be the ones that make her feel the most hopeful, excited, renewed and positive. These goals should be the ones that are important to her, not what others expect of her. Next, have her create a resolution calendar marked with clear small achievements as part of reaching her yearly goals, keeping her on track and giving her the confidence to continue. She should keep this calendar along with her written list of resolutions in a highly visible place to serve as a reminder of the new strategies she’s incorporating into her life. On her calendar should be scheduled a time each week dedicated to monitoring the results and making adjustments. Remind her to keep to a steady course and celebrate when she reaches each milestone of success. Personally remember to celebrate her successes with recognition, compliments and support. Encourage your daughter to keep developing a strong-willed inner voice that supports and matches her dreams. Monitor her thinking and make sure it matches with the intention of her resolutions. Respect her and back her up to never stop dreaming. Support her to achieve her resolution one day at a time for one year. In order to be successful, she will need focus, personal accountability and persistence. One’s life is a work in progress. Visualize and talk with her about how amazing it will be to have her goals completed. Change of any kind is challenging, but if she persists with small steps and appreciates each accomplishment she makes, the results will be well worth the effort and rewarding along the way. If you find that she slacks off, make sure she doesn’t become self-critical. Assist her to just get back to following through on her goals. Resolutions are set in one day but implemented with small steps that happen throughout the whole year. By working on her goals all year long, your daughter can be one of the few able to say that she really did keep her New Year’s resolution. In the words of Confucius, “It doesn’t matter how slowly you go, so long as you do not stop.” Happy New Year! n Patti Carmalt-Vener, a faculty member with the Southern California Society for Intensive Short Term Psychotherapy, has been a psychotherapist in private practice for 23 years and has an office in Pasadena. FROM THE ROAD TO THE ROSE

GRAMMY-WINNING EAST LA HEROES LOS LOBOS’ TOUR BRINGS THEM TO THE ROSE ON SUNDAY, THEN TO THE ROSE PARADE GRAND FINALE BY BLISS BOWEN

I

n all the years that Los Lobos have been soundtracking people’s lives with their music, the boundary-pushing East LA rockers have never played the Rose Parade. That will change on New Year’s Day, when they perform a few songs at the 131st Rose Parade’s Grand Finale on the last float, which will be parked on Orange Grove Boulevard. “It’ll be a first for us, for sure,” says keyboardist/saxophonist Steve Berlin (“the only non-Los Angeleno in the bunch”) during a call from Boston, the latest stop on Los Lobos’ tour promoting “Llegó Navidad,” their first Christmas album. “They approached us, we thought about it and said, yeah, why not? We’re an LA band, we should do this. “It’ll really be interesting. I have no idea what to expect. The only parades I’ve been to have been in small towns; I’ve never been to something that the whole country, much less the whole world, is watching.” Los Lobos will also give a full show at The Rose in Pasadena on Sunday, Dec. 29. It’s likely to feature the half dozen “Llegó Navidad” songs they’ve integrated into their show. “I feel like the expiration date’s gonna be the day after New Year’s, so I think we’ll still be doing them,” Berlin says. “I’m gonna be sad to see them go. I really like these songs, they’re fun to play.” One reason fans keep turning out for Lobos concerts: they have four decades worth of material and you’re never quite sure what you’ll hear, beyond a zesty mix of rock, cumbia, boleros, R&B, country, soul, Tex-Mex, maybe even some jazz. That eclecticism helped make “Llegó Navidad” 2019’s freshest-sounding holiday release. An initial list of 160 festive songs from Central, North and South America was quickly whittled down to 30 or 40, per Berlin, and from there it was a matter of balancing arrangements according to “feels and rhythms” and vocal choices. “Very rarely when we do Lobos records do we have a choice like that; generally the writing part of a Los Lobos record doesn’t happen until we’ve actually started the record [and] we’re panicking, trying to get stuff done,” Berlin notes with a laugh. “I’ve gotta say, all things being equal, it’s a lot more interesting and fun to actually have choices and be able to pick from stuff.” 36 PASADENA WEEKLY | 12.26.19

They’ve toured regularly this year, and their 2020 itinerary is already filling up. For a band that guitarist and chief lyricist Louie Pérez has described as “children of immigrants,” it’s a dark and fascinating time to be interacting with people on the road across the country. “Everybody’s kind of torn up by what’s happening and the way things are happening,” Berlin observes. “My sense is that the healing aspect of what we do becomes more and more important. But I don’t think we’re going to stand on the sidelines as we ramp up to Election Day. “Over the years we sort of shied away from making overt political statements and announcements just because we felt the music spoke for itself. But this election is too important. We’re going to be, hopefully as much as we can be, on our own version of the frontlines.” Does that mean we might hear a new Los Lobos record in 2020 addressing immigration and social injustice, a la 2006’s “The Town and the City”? “We’re talking about a new record, but it’s going to be a covers record. Actually, we’re still discussing what we’re going to do and how we’re going to do it.” Time constraints imposed by the gestation period required to write “an overtly political record” present a hurdle, Berlin says. “If there was a way to do it and get it out in time I think we’d consider it, but … if it comes out on Halloween, it’s not going to help anybody.” In the meantime, Pérez and multi-instrumentalist David Hidalgo are composing music for a developing musical about “La Bamba” Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Ritchie Valens, “Come On, Let’s Go,” and Berlin is producing new albums by soulful Austin duo the Greyhounds and quirky one-man band the Suitcase Junket. Los Lobos’ weathered road warriors are still creatively curious. “I think who we are and what we are makes a difference to people,” Berlin says. “It’s something we get a lot — people expressing how much our music means to them. That’s always been incredibly gratifying.”n Los Lobos perform at The Rose, 245 E. Green St., Pasadena, 9 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 29; $38-$68. Doors open 6 p.m. Info: (888) 645-5006. KWAKU ASANTE, honeycomb (E&M): HHHH

The North London R&B songwriter’s slurry baritone and velvety grooves make this six-track EP an ear-friendly tease. Romance and the search for clarity are dominant themes, from the rubbery “AWOL” through yearning closer “The End” (“I want to give you all the world/ Along with my last name”). Asante’s vocals are warmly enticing, but it’s his arrangements and Dan Holloway’s dynamic production that distinguish these tracks, particularly funk-ribbed single “Molasses” and the melodic evocation of ’70s soul of the hooky “Primrose.” More, please. metropolismusic.com/ artists/kwaku-asante/

THE REVELERS, At the End of the River (Au Bout de la Rivière) (Revelers Records): HHH

Live, this Grammy-nominated southwestern Louisiana sextet performs Cajun, country, swamp pop and zydeco standards plus originals reflecting their influences. Their fifth album likewise mirrors that deep cultural heritage with its mix of bluesy waltzes, rowdy swamp rockers, and romantic French ballads and dances. There’s a laid-back earthiness to their sound that distinguishes them from New Orleans counterparts, and guitarist Chas Justus, accordionist Blake Miller and soulful saxophonist Chris Miller shine during the lighthearted title track, “Please Please, Like We Did Last Summer,” and two-stepper “She’s a Woman.” revelersband.com

Slinging the Blues BLUES MUSIC AWARD-NOMINATED GUITARIST KIRK FLETCHER AT COPPER STILL GRILL IN MONROVIA SATURDAY NIGHT

PHOTO: Jonathan Ellis

B

ellflower native Kirk Fletcher used to be a regular presence at LA-area clubs, fronting his own band or sitting in with fellow blues slingers like Paulie Cerra, Rick Holmstrom and Josh Smith when he wasn’t out on tour. A commanding guitarist well respected for his expressive fretwork and tone, he’s been scarce since following his heart to Switzerland three years ago, however, so his show this Saturday at the Copper Still Grill is a welcome return. The son of a Pentecostal minister, Fletcher was turned on to funk and rock by his older brother’s record collection, and was infatuated with guitar before he even hit puberty. After gigging around greater LA in gospel, funk and R&B bands for several years, he eventually focused his attention on blues and fell in with heavyweight Southland players like the influential Hollywood Fats, Lynwood Slim and Junior

Watson (from whom Fletcher took invaluable lessons). In 1999 he released his first album, “I’m Here & I’m Gone,” and over the next decade toured and recorded with Doyle Bramhall, Cyndi Lauper, Charlie Musselwhite, the Mannish Boys, Kim Wilson’s Blues Revue, and the Fabulous Thunderbirds, with whom he played guitar for three years. (Fletcher can be heard going mano-a-mano with Nick Curran on the band’s 2005 album “Painted On.”) In May his fifth and most recent album, 2018’s “Hold On,” was in contention for a Best Contemporary Blues Album award from the Blues Music Association — his fifth BMA nomination. (Shemekia Copeland’s “America’s Child” won.) Sleek and soulful, the album finds Fletcher digging into the roots where blues, country, gospel and rock knot and tangle, and indulges in some of the long, lyrical solos that are a signature

of the burly guitarist’s live performances. A searing lead builds tension in opening blues-rocker “Two Steps Forward,” while the easy-grooving “You Need Me” and the title track reflect the influence of avowed songwriting inspiration Bobby Womack, and the sweet and funky “Dupree” pays loving tribute to another musical hero, legendary R&B/jazz guitarist Cornel Dupree. Fletcher, who still visits LA regularly to see his family and friends, is a warm, good-natured presence onstage. He’s got a birthday just before Christmas so there’ll be more than one cause for celebration at Saturday’s show, which is highly recommended for local blues fans. n Pasadena Blues presents Kirk Fletcher at the Copper Still Grill, 610 S. Myrtle Ave., Monrovia, at 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 28; tickets are $15-$50 and available at pasadenablues. com. Info: (626) 239-6482. kirkfletcherband.com, copperstillgrillmonrovia.com.

HARRY CONNICK JR., True Love: A Celebration of Cole Porter (Verve): HHHH

“Anything Goes,” “In the Still of the Night” and “Just One of Those Things” are among the expected Cole Porter hits receiving elegant bigband treatment in Connick’s discerningly arranged tribute to the iconic composer. Less expected: a deliciously sultry rendition of “All of You,” a lively romp through “I Love Paris” that gains momentum from a host of instrumental solos, and “Mind If I Make Love to You” and “True Love” from the 1956 Bing Crosby-Grace Kelly-Frank Sinatra film “High Society.” Connick is in fine, supple vocal form, and this tastefully produced set is an engaging reminder of what a masterful pianist and arranger he is. harryconnickjr.com

P.P. ARNOLD, The New Adventures of … P.P. Arnold (earMUSIC): HHH

After singing in her family’s gospel band and with Ike & Tina Turner, the native Angeleno found success as a solo artist and actor in late 1960s-’70s England. This 15-track collaboration with Paul Weller guitarist Steve Cradock, begun in the late ’90s, balances soul originals like “Hold on to Your Dreams” with Arnold’s fullthroated interpretations of material by the likes of Sandy Denny, Bob Dylan (a percussive rap of “The Last Thoughts of Woody Guthrie”), Mike Nesmith, and Weller, and resurrects the rhythmic feel and production warmth of Arnold’s early recordings. pparnold.com

If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property.
