FLYING INTO 2021

lue Black (BB), my new love is. I don’t usually speak like Yoda, but I have a crush on a new bird pal: BB, the crow or raven. For the New Year, my resolution is to learn more about birds and use them as a source of joy and calmness. This desire stems from watching BB fly in and fly out after washing her glorious wing-pits in our fountain/birdbath. Our front yard in Altadena is an urban jungle with flora worthy of a fancyschmancy park. Although I have a withered thumb, even I can’t kill our garden. Like our Kapok silk floss tree, some plants have spent close to 100 years on our property. As I bird watch from my office window, BB’s feathers give off an iridescence. I wish I could talk to her. I can’t tell if she’s a Raven or a Crow. And truthfully, I don’t know if she’s a female or male since their outward gender markers are not obvious. Plus, it would be rude to peek under her tail feathers. When my hubby and I go on our Altadena dog walks, we yell “hello, crows!” when encountering them. We learned that crows remember the faces of people who have been either good or bad to them. Some ornithologists put a crow’s intelligence level on par with a 6- to 7-year-old human. That’s way ahead of infant human goo-goo gaw gaw, or in their case, coo-coo caw caw. My go-to bird expert is my friend and All Saints Church choir “godmother” Elizabeth Tatum. A glorious singer, it’s not a surprise that she’d also be a bird watcher. When I asked her for tips about beginning bird watching in our yard, she replied, “That’s how I started. Once you start bird watching, you’ll be amazed at how much you were missing and didn’t know it.” This concept is not dissimilar to my dating years: If I dated someone who had a Land Rover, I would start seeing Land Rovers everywhere, even though I had not noticed them before. For years, I’ve read the studies showing how wrong we are about the epithet “Bird Brain.” It turns out our human-centric snobbery is way off. Corvids—aka the crow family—are found around the world. For some cultures, they represent doom and gloom; for others, magic and auspicious events. The Corvids include ravens, magpies, rooks and jays. They are all highly intelligent and recognize human faces, so do not hurl anything at them! Corvids are also renowned for gift giving and taking—and, as it turns out, returning. Early this year, we hosted a fundraiser for the All Saints choir. Another choir pal who had attended told me she was excited because she’d spent some of her father’s inheritance to splurge on the earrings she was wearing. She discovered she’d lost one of them when she arrived home afterward. It was late at night, so we promised we’d leave no stone or cushion unturned to find it when the light was better the following day, after coming up empty-handed on our first pass. The next morning, we combed our living room, front porch,

•LETTERS• TRUMP’S BETRAYAL OF DEMOCRACY

Editor: “The Republican Cult is an organized conspiracy for the purposes of maintaining power for self-interest. There is no fidelity to the American ideal,” states Steve Schmidt. It is clear that the 126 Trump cult members from the House and 18 red state attorneys general have betrayed their oath to the Constitution and joined President Trump’s illegal effort to overturn the will of the people by throwing out 20 million votes. process. Leaders like Tom Cotton, Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz, Mike Lee, Nikki Haley, Lindsey Graham, Mike Pompeo, Mike Pence, Kevin McCarthy and let’s add Loeffler and Perdue are willing to allow his destructive behavior because they are cowards and fear him. They should be quarantined and that includes our president who continues to “abuse our laws.” I thank God that our U.S. Supreme Court slammed the door in their faces and then, they should be sanctioned for their betrayal of our Constitution.

walkways. We called our friend back and got the location of her previous evening’s parking spot. We walked up and down our street, looking at every square inch. Nothing. Nada. Zilch. My orphaned earring friend even came back to go over the same “territories” Ken and I had already scoured. Again, nothing. We gave up and she went back home. Two hours later, I went outside, and there, glinting in the sunlight on one of our porch steps, was the earring! It was in a place where it would be impossible to miss it. No human could have put it there. Our gates are padlocked, and climbing our fences would have had severe consequences, given the succulents and cactuses acting as a natural barbwire barrier. The only answer was that a crow friend saw us searching and returned it to where they’d found it. (Crows also famously love shiny things.) Now, we not only say “hello” on our walks but “thank you.” Corny as it seems, there’s science behind the benefits of bird watching. Ecowatch.com and Audubon both report that people are happier when they pay attention to birds, which is why bird watching has risen in popularity during the pandemic. Tiredly, bird watchers are unfairly stereotyped as white “feathered” dweebs, when in actuality, people of all ages, sizes and colors partake. (Watch the 2013 documentary “Birders: The Central Park Effect” for not only the diversity of birds shown but of people.) Cindy Cooper’s racist verbal attack against a Black bird watcher in Central Park brought even more attention to the NYC birding phenomenon. Look! It’s a plane, it’s Supergirl, no—even better, it’s a bird! Now, I’ll finish winging it and wish you all a fabulous New Year. I admit that, after 2020, this is a low bar that won’t require much. Hey… if Corvids can return earrings, can they help drive Drumpf and COVID-19 away? And I’ve put out an orphan earring or two for BB. Waiting for her to pick them up. n Ellen Snortland has written “Consider This…” for a heckuva long time, and she also coaches first-time book authors! Contact her at ellen@ beautybitesbeast.com.

HOMEGROWN WEED VARDA BECOMES FIRST LEGAL DISPENSARY TO OPEN IN PASADENA BY MATTHEW RODRIGUEZ

hen Hong Kong native Tony Fong was a teenager growing up in Arcadia in the 1990s, marijuana terrified him. However, his fear didn’t stop him from trying it. “I was at my high school friend’s house and he found some weed in his brother’s room and he called me,” said Fong about the first time he smoked cannabis. “The experience was not good, so I wasn’t actively using it in high school. I think we smoked too much.” After the paranoia that accompanied his negative experience, never in his wildest dreams did teenaged Fong think he would open a dispensary, let alone four. On December 15, Fong and his longtime friend, Leonard Wang, opened their newest dispensary, Varda, in Pasadena—the first legal dispensary in the city. When they were asked if they ever thought they would open a dispensary right next to their hometowns the two both let out a resounding “No!” as they chuckled. “I’ve been living in Pasadena for about 10 years,” Fong said. “Pasadena is like my hometown. I live here. I work here. I shop here. Getting a store in Pasadena, it’s actually very important [to me].” In college, Fong discovered his love for weed but quickly after he graduated he put the pipe down once again. It wasn’t until 2005 while working as a furniture salesman that he walked into a dispensary for the first time. “Back in 2005, I went to my friend’s dispensary for the very first time and I was just very impressed,” Fong said. “I saw the future. I had a regular job but surely I knew this is something that I wanted to invest in.” However, dispensaries, before cannabis was legalized for recreational use, were more like speakeasies rather than the large Apple Store-esque MedMen stores widely popular today. In a typical modern dispensary, stores neatly display their products in an illuminated glass case more commonly seen housing jewelry. There’s an atrium where security guards scan patrons’ IDs before they enter. After, they walk through a steel security door where the product lay before them, free to pick and chose what they want, like a candy shop for adults. The dispensary that Fong first walked into was located in the back room of a tiny, cramped cellphone store. The products were spread out over a tablecloth

covering a gray, plastic folding table. Even with the awkward experience of walking into the dispensary, Fong knew that he wanted to start his own. Drawing from this adventure to his first dispensary, Fong wanted to enhance his customers’ experience, some of whom may be going to a dispensary for the first time. “We want to make the shopping experience easier for first-time dispensary visitors,” Fong said. “This is the first time that people in Pasadena see a dispensary in their own town. I expect a lot of first-time cannabis shoppers coming to check out [Varda].” With 500 items in the 5,000-square-foot store, Fong wanted to make sure his customers did not get lost in the sea of information. To reduce the stress for all of his customers, not only the first-time buyers, Fong and his team curated individual display booths called “moods”. Each display booth displays cannabis for a certain “mood” whether it’s for sleep, activity or just simply the staff favorites. “Each counter has its own individual theme,” he said. “We want to eliminate the guessing of the technical terms of cannabis.” The opening Varda was a long and tenuous journey. After California legalized marijuana in 2016, it was up to cities to determine the regulations for the businesses. In June 2018, residents passed Measure CC which allowed as many as six dispensaries to open in the city. In the following two years, 122 companies applied for conditional use permits (CUPs). The city chose six to continue in the process but only three received CUP, with Varda receiving its own in July 2020. Following the selection process, a lawsuit filed by one of the applicants, MedMen forced the city to put the program on hold which delayed the opening of Varda. “The amount of delays we had [delayed opening] at least six to nine months easily,” Fong said. “To be fair the city of Pasadena has been nothing but helpful and supportive.” Even with the delays and obstacles to opening, Fong and Wang are just happy to open a store right next to their cities they grew up in. “This is like a childhood dream come true,” Fong said. “I can’t complain. I’m just very excited.” n 12.31.20 | PASADENA WEEKLY 7

As of December 27, Huntington Hospital reported 189 COVID-19 patients with 30 in the ICU. Compared to November, Pasadena is seeing a 900% increase in new cases each day with 125 new cases a day Dr. Ying-Ying Goh said last week. “This has resulted in a surge of hospitalizations and deaths and [it] is not showing any sign of decreasing,” Goh said last week. “Our health care system is strained to its limits…” • After the initial doses of the vaccine were delivered and administered to frontline health care workers, the vaccine has made its way to

firefighters and skilled nursing facilities. On December 28, Pasadena firefighters became the first of the frontline essential workers vaccinated in the city. The voluntary vaccine will be administered at after each of the three 48-hour shifts. According to city spokeswoman Lisa Derderian, there are 50 firefighters per shift so in total 150 firefighters may be vaccinated by the end of the week. Derderian said that the city decided to vaccinate at the end of shift so if firefighters were to experience a side effects, it would not occur during an already busy shift. • Harvest Rock Church continues its legal battle against Gov. Gavin Newsom and the state’s restrictions on indoor services. After losing another ruling last week, the Pasadena church filed another case with Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. The court sided with the Judge Jesus Bernal decision, however, Los Angeles County lifted its ban on indoor services. The church continues to meet while COVID-19 cases skyrocket and ICU capacity plummets. In a video posted to the church’s Facebook page, several people can be seen not wearing masks as the congregation gathered indoors. — Information Complied by Matthew Rodriguez

CONTROVERSY SPARKS OVER ROSE BOWL NAMING RIGHTS BY MATTHEW RODRIGUEZ

A

lthough the Rose Bowl game has moved away from Pasadena for the first time since 1942, some hope the name of the game will not follow. “Please do not allow the College Football Playoff game in Texas to use the Rose Bowl name,” Pasadena Chamber of Commerce President Paul Little wrote to the city council. “The name and the game are Pasadena’s identity to the world. Allowing it to be used for a game in Texas would diminish the name and the value of the event. The Rose Bowl name is part of Pasadena’s brand and should be protected and cherished by the City and the Tournament. You betray Pasadena, its residents and our history to allow the Rose Bowl name to be used for a game in Texas.” Little and several others expressed their opposition to the use of the Rose Bowl name during a special closed session city council meeting last Tuesday. According to the agenda, the purpose of the meeting was to discuss the “price and terms of payments” between the Tournament of Roses CEO David Eads and City Manager Steve Mermell. However, as of Monday morning, there has still been no reportable action from the meeting. Whether or not the College Football Playoffs (CFP) will use the Rose Bowl name was still up in the air. Per the Ralph M. Brown Act, the city must publicly report any action taken during the closed session meeting, but it may be deferred if for instance, there were settlements or monetary agreements. The Rose Bowl game was originally scheduled to be played in the iconic Rose Bowl stadium between No. 1 Alabama and No. 4 Notre Dame. However, after appeals for the state to allow friends and family at the game were denied and Southern California being ravaged by COVID-19, the Tournament of Roses and CFP management decided to move the game out of Pasadena for the first time since World War II. On January 1, 1942, almost a month after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, the U.S. government feared an attack on the West Coast which forced the game to be moved to Durham, North Carolina. “The College Football Playoff Management Committee and Tournament of Roses have mutually agreed that, given the growing number of COVID-19 cases in Southern California, the CFP semifinal game previously scheduled to be played at the Rose Bowl Stadium will now be played at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas,” the CFP wrote in a statement. As the game approaches, residents such as Little are worried Pasadena will lose the Rose Bowl game for good. “The Rose Bowl and the Rose Parade are identifiers of Pasadena to the world,” Little said. “I think it diminishes that if we let [the name] be used elsewhere for a game that’s not the Rose Bowl game, it’s the College Football Playoffs game.” Little also believes this could be the beginning of the end of College Football games in the Rose Bowl stadium. “I do think they’re going to come back and say, ‘We really would love to have the championship game at the Rose Bowl, except SoFi Stadium is offering to let us do it for so much less. “I think the first thing that’s at risk is future playoff games. There may not be another one of those played in the Rose Bowl, just like there has not been a championship college football game played in anything but a professional football stadium for the last few years.” In 2015, the Tournament of Roses and ESPN reached a 12-year extension estimated at about $80 million a year. The Rose Bowl stadium desperately needs football to return after the COVID-19 pandemic has ended. According to the Rose Bowl Operating Company, which maintains the iconic stadium, forecasted a $14 million deficit after the pandemic effectively closed the stadium to fans. According to General Manager Darryl Dunn, the Rose Bowl game typically fills the stadium to the capacity of about 90,000 people and generates a net revenue of $4 million to $5 million. n

hen I started writing about food for Pasadena Weekly last January, I was excited about what was to come with my neighborhood. Bustling dining rooms and counters with customers seated elbowto-elbow yielded a cacophony of crowded cafeterias and cramped kitchens. It’s all a lost world now. As the pandemic loomed in late February and early March, I was dubious and in deep denial about the threat of an impending lockdown. I recall chatting with Elena Yi, the young Chinese owner of Me + Crepe on Green Street and expressing to her my sense that we were overreacting to the spreading virus. Her eyes widened at this and she quite emphatically insisted that from her family’s perspective in China, we were very much underreacting. A few days later, the state’s lockdown came, and all our lives changed. Some restaurants quietly folded and vanished forever. Many operations shuttered indefinitely, later to reopen. The community witnessed the resilience and ingenuity of chefs and restaurateurs and their sequence of “pivots” to accommodate for the changing state mandates. Instead of listing my favorite experiences, chefs, restaurants or dishes, I decided to break down the year into a few lists of “highlights.”

At one time or another Pasadena has had three culinary schools. There’s a thriving ghost kitchen in Kitchen United and the primary restaurant supply wholesaler in Restaurant Depot. It’s the birthplace of Julia Child and was the home of the late critic Jonathon Gold. There is a generational collision of cultural influences here that reflects greater Los Angeles and provides much of the foundational bedrock of a culinary and dining scene that rivals any city in the world. Finally, it must be said: it’s worth fighting for the beleaguered local restaurants. Whatever one’s opinion may be regarding the ban on outdoor dining, no restaurant should be allowed to fail in the midst of it. In the coming year, let’s try to take care of each other. Stay hungry! n

ormer Detroit Pistons “Bad Boy” Isiah Thomas has gone from pouring Champagne on teammates to selling it. Thomas’ award-winning Cheurlin Champagne recently launched an online presence with the New York-based e-commerce company Thirstie. He said the Basketball Hall of Famer Isiah Thomas partnership was vital because brought Cheurlin Champagne to the it reaches beyond the brick-andUnited States in 2016. mortar retail shops. “Having the opportunity to work with Thirstie and being able to be a bit more intimate with your customer base and supplying them with their needs has been great for us,” he said. Thirstie CEO Devaraj Southworth added, “We’re honored to be joining Isiah and the Cheurlin family on their mission to bringing this fine Champagne to the U.S. online market. Thirstie’s cutting-edge technology, coupled with our innovative data solutions, helps ensure Cheurlin is available for shipping and delivery to 200 million Americans.” Cheurlin Champagne’s 100% owner and importer, Thomas brought it to the United States in 2016. Bottles range in price from $25 to $299.99. “When you look at the spirit space right now, there’s a new wine that comes out every month. There’s a new vodka or tequila,” he said. “I always wanted the best of the best—and Champagne is the best of the best. “With the Cheurlin family, we can’t own the land, so we own all the rights to the grapes. We’re able to give you the first press of the grape every single time. We’re the largest value producer of first-press grape Champagne in the United States and in the Americas.” Thomas added the Champagne is low in sugar because it’s made with the firstpress grape. “We’re bringing you the lowest sugar Champagne at a very affordable price point,” he said. “That’s what drove me to this space.” Entering the Champagne business presented a learning curve to Thomas, who called himself a “forever learner.” “Part of the learning curve was just understanding the process of making Champagne,” he contended. “All Champagnes are made with three grapes. We only use pinot noir grape, the pinot blanc and chardonnay. “Being able to understand the difference of the grapes—what they are used for and then, most importantly, the difference between first press, second press and third press—was tough.” Other Champagne companies are so large that they can’t offer a first press with every single bottle, he added. Cheurlin can guarantee that. Thomas’ company is the largest minority-owned Champagne in the world—and it didn’t come without struggles. “We bumped our head a lot in this distribution game because it was a new product and the new kid on the block. I’m also the only person of color who’s truly in this space as an owner-importer. I was told no a hundred times for every one yes. “Earning the acceptability and the credibility from the distributors who are used to dealing with a very known product (was challenging). They’re used to only dealing with a very known product, so they were reluctant to bring on another Champagne.” Through Cherlin Champagne, Thomas hopes to educate the public about first-, second- and third-press Champagne. The higher-quality Champagnes do not produce hangovers as easily, he said for example. Cheurlin Champagne only has 1 gram of sugar per glass. “When you drink it, you shouldn’t get a searing headache,” Thomas said. “Most Champagnes you’re drinking now in the market are so heavily loaded with sugar. The headaches come from the sugar and the high sulfates. “When you get a headache from drinking, that is your body telling you that what you put in your mouth is not good for you. What I like to do is continue to educate the public about the first, second and third presses of Champagne.” n

olunteering is nothing new to Barbara Damerel. She served 39 years in the Huntington Hospital gift shop, and on the board for the Hill Haribson House in San Marino. She’s also focused on San Marino Schools, the Girl Scouts and the San Marino Chapter of the National Charity League. Damerel said she feels she found her calling as president of Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts (PSHA) for the 2020-21 term. “It’s exciting to be able to be the president during these challenging times because I know we’re not going to walk the same path we’ve walked for 56 years,” Damerel said. “I hope to be able to see the organization through these trying times. We’ll have to implement new fundraising ideas to complement what we do.” Damerel owned an insurance business for 11 years. Previously she was on the sales and leasing side of the automobile industry for 28 years. She joined Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts in 2003 because she liked its mission of promoting music and music education. “I can’t sing, but my husband’s grandmother sang on the test record for Thomas Edison,” Damerel said of the late Gertrude Darsie. “She used to have a Steinway grand piano in her living room and gave free vocal lessons to promoting opera singers. “It’s been an appreciation of something I can’t do, but I realize how important it is for people who can.” Damerel and her husband, Jeffrey, live in Darsie’s San Marino home. Damerel has held numerous board and committee positions over the years, including benefit chairwoman for the 2019 Pasadena Showcase House of Design in Descanso Gardens. “Over the years I have observed how resilient PSHA is as an organization while undertaking a fundraiser of such an enormous size and scope as the Pasadena Showcase House of Design,” Damerel said. “I have been awed by the resourcefulness and dedication of the all-volunteer membership as we find solutions to nearly insurmountable problems. Now, with all the issues presented by the pandemic, we have once again faced adversity and pivoted to present the 2020 Showcase House as an innovative and comprehensive virtual tour. It took quick thinking, creativity, a committed team and a devoted membership to bring it to fruition. I am grateful to and proud of the many members who give so generously of their time and talents to ensure PSHA is able to continue to support music programs in the community.” COVID-19 forced PSHA to pause its music programs for safety reasons, but the organization’s members are proud of conducting the Gifts & Grants program. It offers grants to arts organizations. “We will continue to find new ways to meet our goals in this unprecedented set of circumstances,” Damerel said. “We know the loyalty and support of our visitors, designers, resources and, of course, our members, will see us through.” Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts was created to bring the joy of music to children and adults through exposure, education and experience. Since 1948, it has donated more than $23 million and countless volunteer hours dedicated to reaching 6,000 elementary school students and musicians aged 16 to 24 annually. TITAN23 BRINGS FANS CLOSE TO ADRIAN GONZÁLEZ BY NICHOLAS BARKER

F

THE PERFECT GAME FOR LA SPORTS FANS HITS THE MARKET BY KENDALL ROOKER

L

os Angeles sports fans are passionate about their teams. With the release of the Los Angeles edition of You Gotta Know Sports Trivia Game, fans can bond. “It’s in the vein of old-school Trivial Pursuit,” said Brad Riter, one of the game’s designers. “One could have it and serve as a moderator.” You Gotta Know Los Angeles Sports Trivia Game celebrates the players, coaches and games that make LA central in the sports universe. The game sells for $19.95 and consists of 500 questions that will spark memories, discussions and debates from anyone who has ever cheered for the teams like the Lakers, Dodgers, Rams, Angels, Kings, Clippers, UCLA or USC. The game asks a variety of questions covering all Los Angeles sports, from the Dodgers moving from Brooklyn to Los Angeles in 1957 to LeBron James joining the Lakers. “The whole point of it is a shared aspect of being a sports fan of the community,” Riter said. “It is not about stumping your friend. It is about having conversations about teams’ players and legendary players. It is about the bonding of being a fan. It belongs anywhere fans are. It is a game to bring to tailgate parties. Wherever sports fans are gathered.” The 125-card set is more than just a game, he said. “There are 1-, 2-, 3- and 7-point value questions, based off of scoring in football,” he said. “A 1-pointer is borderline common sense. You do not have to be an LA sports fan to know the answers. We put clues in the questions to lead you to the answer. The game also works as a box of questions while you are hanging out drinking beer. It’s a bunch of nostalgia in a box, and you’re free to use it however you want.” Casual fans and sports nuts both will have fun playing the game that makes one think about the city’s history. About 60% of the questions are in the 2- and 3-point range; 20% in the 1-point range and 20% in the 7-point range. “We want the game to be challenging but fun. We want the questions to be not obvious but workable. That is where the fun is, remembering the wrong answers,” Riter said. The game developers tried to make a perfect game for guys who love sports at a price of $19.95. “If you have someone on your list who is a sports fan, this is in the right price range and it is going to give people something fun to do,” Riter said. “You could open the box and treat it like an interesting book of facts about Los Angeles sports. You do not need to play the game. It is a lot of fun to bring back memories in sports in Los Angeles. It’s all about the conversation and remembering the teams you love.” n

ormer Los Angeles Dodgers infielder Adrian González is giving fans unprecedented access to him through his recently launched app, Titan23. Fans can interact with González, buy exclusive content and see his charity work through the app. “The app is pretty much a way for me, myself and any other athlete that is going to join the app closer to the fans for a very organic experience,” González said. “It’s free to the fans. There is some subscriptions bases, but all that allows you to get closer to the player or to myself.” The app’s moniker is based on his San Diego Padres nickname, Titan, coupled with his number. “For us, it is all about the brands and the nicknames,” said González. “For me it is Titan23 because I have always been known as Titan since I was with the Padres. Players weekend of MLB is a very good example of the brands that people use.” Titan23 is multifaceted. One of the most important parts of the app is the giving-back tab, which displays all González’s charitable work. A couple examples include opening a Little League field with Julio Urias of the Dodgers and partnering with SoCal Honda Dealers and Canyon High School to donate new dirt for a baseball field. “Every app that is created from these players, there is a 5% giving back for charity,” González said. “Every player can name it what they like, but there is always from the revenues created, 5% of it is given back to a charity of each individuals choice.” While the app is free to download and use, there are also some premium features that are available via a subscription. Some of the content that is available in premium is a tour of González’s mancave, giveaways and personal posts. “There is discounted memorabilia, a lot of giveaways that are not on the free version, exclusive content, which includes things that will not be posted on Instagram or on the app,” said González. “Things that are a little more personal or closer to us, premium users have access to.” The app will list his social media posts as well from Twitter, Instagram, Facebook or TikTok. “The app will also have extra posts that are not posted to Instagram or Facebook,” said González. The app has already generated a lot of noise, and fans are excited to be able to connect to González. Other apps of the same idea have already been created, and many more athletes and other professionals are starting to jump on board. “We already have three other baseball players that have jump on. We have two soccer players that are in the middle of it, a boxer and some musicians as well,” said González. “It’s bringing in your whole universe into once place for the fans to have access to. Social media is a great place if you just want to socialize and look through everybody, but when you really want to follow somebody, this is the position you want to be in.” While developing the app, González had some time to watch his former team win a World Series for the first time in 32 years. González was ecstatic that the Dodgers were finally able to win the last game of the season. “Mainly for me it was the players that I played with, as well as the owners that I played for,” said González. “The ownership group that I played for was the best ownership group I ever played for, and I’m just really happy for them.” The app is available on the app store for free, but if you wish to purchase the premium version, it is $1.99 for a monthly subscription, or $23.99 for a yearly membership, with a free hat. n 12.31.20 | PASADENA WEEKLY 13
