Leading up to the game, you will likely hear a lot of people say the UCF Golden Knights don’t deserve to be in a BCS game. But the Golden Knights have proven time and time again that they deserve the big stage this season. At the beginning of the season, the American Athletic Conference appeared to be Louisville’s to lose. However, a 38-35 victory on October 18 over the Cardinals put the Knights at the top of the conference standings. They never looked back. This was UCF’s first year in the conference and they were rewarded with the first BCS bowl in program history. Despite popular belief, UCF’s 11-1 record and No. 15 ranking is no joke. The team’s only loss comes against a tough South Carolina team—a

game UCF lost by just three points. This is UCF’s second consecutive double-digit win season and the fourth since head coach George O’Leary arrived on campus in 2005. The Golden Knights have a wellrounded gritty team that knows how to win close games. They rank 13th nationally in scoring defense with opponents averaging just 19.6 points per game. Just like their Texan counterparts, their quarterback is their star. Junior gunslinger Blake Bortles is projected to be a first or second round pick in the upcoming draft, and with good reason. His 6 foot 4 inch, 230 pound frame matched with elite ability has NFL scouts drooling. Bortles threw for 3,280 yards and 22 touchdowns in 2013 with a QB rating of 163.3. Baylor’s defense will certainly be keying on him. When Bortles goes, so does the UCF offense. Most analysts expect a blowout in this game, but they shouldn’t be so fast. The Golden Knights have only lost by more than 10 points twice over the last two seasons. Ever since Boise State beat Oklahoma in 2007, the Fiesta Bowl has been known for upsets. If UCF can force some turnovers and maintain good time of possession, they could be primed for the upset.

Baylor Bears Baylor offense didn’t skip a beat. Junior Antwan Goodley has caught for over 100 yards eight times this season and has a team-leading 13 touchdown receptions. In the backfield, Baylor has arguably the best running back tandem in the country starring junior Lache Seastrunk and freshman Shock Linwood. Seastrunk ran for 1,060 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2013, despite missing two games in the middle of the season, while Linwood 862 yards and 8 touchdowns in a slightly more limited role. The Baylor offense is so strong that sometimes it can overshadow the team’s impressive defense. Giving up just 21.2 points per game, Baylor’s defense doesn’t give up any easy points. How well they can contain UCF quarterback Blake Bortles will likely decide who takes home the hardware in the 2014 Tostito’s Fiesta Bowl.

From 1996 to 2009, the Baylor football program failed to put together a single winning season. But after years spent as the Big 12’s whipping boy, the Bears have finally become the big dogs. Currently ranked 6th in the AP Poll, the Big 12 champion Baylor Bears have a chance to make 2013 the best year in program history. No Baylor team has ever finished the higher than 9th in the AP poll, but the 2013 bunch is a Fiesta Bowl victory over UCF away from accomplishing that feat. The Bears walked most of their schedule with ease, scoring over 70 points on four occasions. But on November 23, Baylor had their lone slip up when they were blasted by Oklahoma State 49-17 in Stillwater. Baylor bounced back by winning their next two games, including a 30-10 victory over Texas to end the season and clinch the conference championship. Led by head coach Art Bryles, Baylor is the nation’s highest scoring team, averaging 53.3 per game. Everywhere you look on the Baylor offense, there are playmakers. Junior quarterback Bryce Petty has been dominant in his first season as a starter for the Bears. He ranks second nationally with a QB rating of 179.2 and eighth in terms of yards per game (320.3). To top it off, Petty has thrown 30 touchdown passes this season and just two interceptions. Much of Petty’s success through the air can be accredited to his talented group of receivers. Despite losing senior receiver Tevin Reese to a wrist injury mid-season, the

Michigan Wolverines The 2013 season was a year of woulda-coulda-shoulda games for the Michigan Wolverines. Aside from their blowout loss against Big Ten champion Michigan State, the Wolverines’ four other losses were by a combined 11 points. Needless to say, it is has been a frustrating year for head coach Brake Hoke and the Wolverines. Michigan was expected to compete for the Big Ten Championship at the beginning of the season. After a 5-0 start to the season, those dreams didn’t seem so far-fetched. However, they would go on to drop five of their next seven games and drop out of contention. Despite their record, Michigan has proven they can hang with elite

teams in 2013. In week two, they beat a solid Notre Dame team 41-30—a game in which they racked up 460 yards of offense. In the last week of the season, they gave the Ohio State Buckeyes all they could handle before falling by a score of 42-41. The biggest weakness for the Wolverines appears to be their offensive line. Their rushing attack is 100th in the nation and their quarterback, Devin Gardner, has been sacked 36 times. However when given time, Gardner can be deadly. The junior quarterback has thrown for 2,960 yards, rushed for 483 and has accounted for 32 total touchdowns on the year. Last game against the Buckeyes, Gardner had his best game of the year. Passing for 451 yards and four touchdowns, he brought the Wolverines within a twopoint conversion from a win. Since head coach Brady Hoke led his squad to a 11-2 record and a Sugar Bowl berth in his first season at Michigan in 2011, the program has regressed in each of the past two seasons. A loss in the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl against Kansas State might put Hoke on the hot-seat in Ann Arbor. However, a win will give his program a little momentum toward next season. Being one of the most storied franchises in college football history, the Michigan fan base doesn’t get too excited about playing in these lowertier bowls. If they are not careful, they could fall victim to a well-coached Kansas State team.

Kansas State Wildcats star of the show. Mueller, a former walkon, is a menace to opposing offenses. He has accumulated 61 tackles on the year and is second in the Big 12 with 11.5 sacks. If the Wildcats want to win this game, they will need to pressure Michigan quarterback Devin Gardner. Luckily for K-State, Michigan has poor offensive line. Expect Mueller to end the game with multiple sacks and a number of hurries.

For Kansas State, the 2013 season started out a complete disaster. In the first game of the season, the Wildcats lost to FCS foe North Dakota State 24-21. After coming off a season in which they went 11-2 and played in the Fiesta Bowl, the loss had Kansas State running for the hills. Luckily for the Wildcats, legendary head coach Bill Snyder (in his 22nd season with the program) managed to turn 2013 into a respectable season. Aside from their loss against NDSU, the Wildcats took care of business against teams they were better than this season. Missing, however, was a marquee win against a highly ranked opponent. That being said, K-State put up good fights against BCS-bound conference foes Oklahoma and Baylor, and No. 13 Oklahoma State. A key player to watch will be junior wide receiver Tyler Lockett. Lockett earned first-team Big 12 honors this season after catching 71 balls for 1,146 yards and eight touchdowns. Against Oklahoma on November 23, Lockett set a Kansas State record when he racked up 283 receiving yards. However, despite those gaudy numbers, his biggest impact may be on special teams. Over the past three seasons, Lockett has compiled 1,760 kick return yards and four touchdowns. The Wolverines will likely try and kick away from Lockett as much as they can. On the defensive side of the ball, junior defensive end Ryan Mueller is the

DJ PAULEY At just 16 years old, Pauly embarked on a journey to turn his passion for music into a profession. By earning his stripes on a local radio station and spinning at the hottest nightclubs, he became a performer in his own right, now headlining gigs all over the world. Pauly has opened up for Black eyed Peas, ll Cool J, usher, Kayne west and Calle 13, just to name a few. He can be heard on Mix 96.9 (Saturday Night Hot Mix).

dJ Sterling is at home when he performs on a Jumbotron. After all, he’s the first Video dJ to play at the Super Bowl, one of the first DJs to perform on an iPad in the uSA and he’s performed at three National College Championship Football Block Parties. Seven years running, dJ Sterling has been the official DJ for the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. He’s the official dJ of the ohio State Alumni (“go BuCKS”) and was voted a 2010 Top Resident dJ in the uSA, finishing in the top three.

The walter Show consists of a variety of outrageously fun-looking vehicles sure to be the hit of the Block Party. walter, originally an Airforce 1963 Crash Truck newly turned Vw bus, has a full sound system, fits over 40 people and lights up with bright neon led lights from top to bottom. Walter’s brother, Big Red, was originally an Army 1959 Walter Crash Truck but now looks like a giant VW Bug! The third and most exciting vehicle is the Kalliope stage with led lights, dJ deck on top, and dance floor on the bottom. All vehicles are wirelessly synced together to create the ultimate dance club experience. Make sure to check out these guys at the corner of 6th and Mill Avenue on New Year’s eve.

JARED & THE MILL A few years ago, Jared Kolesar and his buddy, Michael, invested themselves in learning the Folk and Americana music they’d been getting into. in the summer of 2011, they amassed a band under the name of “Jared & The Mill,” comprised of Singer/ Songwriter Jared Kolesar, larry gast iii on lead guitar, Michael Carter on mandolin, banjo and harmonica, Chuck Morriss on the electric and upright bass, gabe Hall-Rodriguez on accordion/keyboard and Josh Morin on the drums and percussion.

COLD SHOTT AND THE HURRICANE HORNS Cold Shott and the Hurricane Horns was founded in 1990 by bassist Ted “Madman” Kowal as a threepiece, then known as The Cold Shott Blues Band. under the leadership of Kowal, the band expanded its

sound by adding a horn section and a name change in 1991. Cold Shott has solidified itself in the local music scene as a powerful mainstay in the Arizona R&B, funk and soul circuit.

DECKER Rising from the dust of a near-fatal rollover accident while on tour in California in 2012, Sedonabased decker has completed their fourth record in as many years, including their latest, “Slider,” which was released in February 2013. Since the 2009 release of the band’s debut album “long days,” the band has scrapped and grown, played hundreds of dates across the uS and released two more albums, all the while refining their psychedelic desert folk sound.

DARKNESS DEAR BOY darkness dear Boy has the power to shake, rock and move you! They are an energetic indie band that plays original music that blends elements of rock, reggae, punk and honky tonk. They perform from 10 feet up in the air on custom made ladders. ddB is a Tempe-based band that plays festivals and concerts all over the southwest.

WHISKEY’S QUICKER Whiskey’s Quicker is an Arizona-based cover band formed by Valley media personality dan Bickley, who is best known for his biting commentaries on Channel 12, The Arizona Republic, azcentral.com and Arizona Sports 620 (KTAR -AM). wQ has been rocking festival and special events since 2011, with a set list ranging from classic rock to current favorites.
