2015 2015 BIG BIG GAME GAME ENTERTAINMENT ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE GUIDE

The closest thing to a dynasty in the NFL recently has been New England. Since head coach Bill Belichick’s arrival in 2000, he has had unparalleled success: The Patriots won 12 of the last 15 AFC East titles, reached the AFC Championship nine times, collected three Super Bowls victories, and are preparing for their sixth national championship game during his reign. Belichick also has compiled an NFL record 21 postseason wins. His success coincided with the arrival of Tom Brady, a sixth-round draft pick from Michigan in 2000. Brady’s accomplishments are as impressive as Belichick’s: 10-time Pro Bowl selection, two-time NFL MVP, and the Patriots alltime leader in passing touchdowns, yards and completions and career wins. Under the guidance of offensive coordinator, Josh McDaniels, Brady can pick apart any defense that gives him time. He had another exceptional season in 2014, compiling 4,109 passing yards with 33 touchdowns. Brady has an abundance of weapons to throw to: receivers Julian Edelman, Danny Amendola and Brandon LaFell, and tight end Rob “Gronk” Gronkowski are all capable of contributing to the Patriots quick-strike offense. Gronkowski, who amassed 82 catches for 1,124 yards

and 12 TDs, is a tough match-up for defenses—he’s too quick for most linebackers and too physical for defensive backs. Edelman is an underrated, versatile receiver who finds open seams in the short to intermediate range, and as a former college quarterback, can surprise the opposing defense with a trick-play (as he did against Baltimore with a 51-yard TD pass). New England can also employ a powerful ground attack led by back LeGarrette Blount, who punished the Colts in the AFC Championship for 148 yards and three TDs. The Patriots offensive line is anchored by bookend tackles Sebastian Vollmer and Nate Solder. Their roles will be heightened in the Super Bowl against a ferocious Seattle defense. The Patriots’ defense is powered by nose tackle Vince Wilfork, defensive end Rob Ninkovich and linebacker Jamie Collins, who led the team with 115 tackles. With excellent speed in the linebacking corps and great size up front, the Patriots are an excellent run defense. Cornerback Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner match up well against Seattle’s receivers. Revis, nicknamed “Revis Island,” is still the best in the business at man coverage. At safety, the Patriots are in great shape with Patrick Chung and Devin McCourty, one of the top coverage safeties in the league. The Patriots are exceptional at disguising their defensive coverage and surprising opponents with various zones.

Russell Wilson

ARIZONA

APRIL 2015 Seattle Seahawks By Curt Blakeney Head coach: Pete Carroll 2014 Record: 12-4 (2-0 playoffs) Seattle tries to defend its Super Bowl title after a dramatic comefrom-behind victory over Green Bay in the NFC Championship game. It also gives head coach Pete Carroll the opportunity to exact some revenge on the team (New England) that fired him after the 1999 season. Carroll did well for himself, however, winning a couple national championships at USC before finding an NFL home in Seattle in 2010—his third head coaching stint (he also coached the New York Jets in 1994). Carroll has fostered an atmosphere of Zen-like positivity in Seattle, and his players have responded. He’s taken the Seahawks to the playoffs in four of his five seasons in Seattle, and is preparing for his second straight Super Bowl. Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson may not be viewed as an “elite” quarterback, but he fits perfectly within the scheme of offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell. Wilson, a third-round pick in the 2012 NFL Draft out of Wisconsin, lacks prototype height (listed at 5 feet, 11 inches), but he makes up for it with exceptional accuracy and scrambling ability. He finished the 2014 season with 3,475 yards and 20 touchdowns with a 63.1 completion percentage.

Wilson’s first responsibility is to hand the football to Marshawn “Beast Mode” Lynch, who punishes defenders with his aggressive running style and second effort. Lynch almost never goes down on first contact, plowing his way to 1,306 rushing yards, 13 TDs and an impressive 4.7 yards per carry during the season. Make no mistake: Lynch is the offensive workhorse, racking up four straight 1,000-plus yard seasons for Seattle. Seattle finished first in the NFL in rushing yards and 27th in passing yards. Wilson is the ultimate “game manager” but can spark the offense with his arm as he demonstrated against Green Bay. Receivers Doug Baldwin and Jermaine Kearse and tight end Luke Wilson are reliable targets. The Seahawks boast the league’s most menacing defense and they have the stats to prove it, finishing first in yardage against and first in points allowed. Finding holes in the Seattle defense is not an easy task, as they defend the run as equally as they thwart the pass. Seattle employs a 4-3 scheme guided by defensive coordinator Dan Quinn. Pro Bowl cornerback Richard Sherman, the NFL’s biggest trash talker, leads a formidable secondary nicknamed the “Legion of Boom,” which includes Pro Bowl safeties Kam Chancellor and Earl Thomas. Look for Patriots quarterback Tom Brady to try to exploit cornerback Byron Maxwell.

best new ads. Studies show that millions watch the Super Bowl primarily to see the advertising. The Super Bowl has become an unparalleled advertising marvel, for which corporations fork out upward of $4 million per 30-second spot. “Brands are known to bring out their most creative and biggest ideas for the Super Bowl,” says Derek Rucker, a marketing professor at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management. “In addition, not everyone is invested in the particular teams playing, so commercials give viewers a common touch point to talk about.” Talking babies, cute puppies and Clydesdale horses always prove popular. Americans have become fearful of missing one, at the risk of sounding clueless during water-cooler gossip on Monday.

THE PARTY Katy Perry brings her dance pop to this year’s halftime show.

What makes the Super Bowl so super? By Curt Blakeney Whether you’re planning to watch the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLIX at a party, pony up big bucks for a game ticket, or just revel in the wake left by swanky celebrity bashes in Scottsdale, you’re about to get caught up in the NFL’s massive marketing vortex. To put the Sunday, February 1, game’s magnitude into perspective, more than 111.5 million viewers watched last year’s Super Bowl, 88 million more than game seven of the 2014 World Series. Baseball may be our national pastime, but football rules the roost when it comes to popularity.

THE GAME We’re up to the 49th Super Bowl, and every year, we’re hopeful for an epic game. We’ve witnessed some classics, including the Giants shocking then-undefeated New England and Pittsburgh’s tippy-toed victory over our beloved Cardinals. There are arguably a dozen quintessential Super Bowls, but the reality is, teams don’t always plays so super. Last year, the Seahawks routed the Broncos, 43-8, the third worst blowout in Super Bowl history. There have been 20 Super Bowls played where the point

differential was greater than 16, and the average margin of victory is actually 15 points.

THE HALFTIME SHOW For the first 24 Super Bowls, fans were entertained at halftime by an insipid lineup of marching bands, drill teams and a musical abomination called “Up With People.” In 1991, the NFL morphed the halftime show with pop culture, and busted out the New Kids on the Block. It was a bold and risky move (Up With People fans were pretty irate), but one that launched the modern-day halftime extravaganza. Since then, host cities have paraded musical icons like Michael Jackson, Aerosmith, ’N Sync, U2, Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones—we even had “Nipplegate,” Janet Jackson’s breastpopping wardrobe malfunction. Katy Perry will bring her cheeky, danceable pop to Glendale with Lenny Kravitz. “This year’s halftime show is going to be crazy,” she teases in a promotional video.

THE COMMERCIALS Commercial breaks are no longer time for potty stops...viewers stay glued to the TV to watch Madison Avenue’s

Every year, millions of Americans use Super Bowl Sunday as a chance to get together with friends and family, watch football, laugh at the commercials and eat a truckload of food. For many, the Super Bowl party is “the” party of the year. Advice to party hosts: Avoid a gastronomic faux pas and stick to the crowd-pleasing, artery-hardening staples like burgers, ribs, nachos and wings. The National Chicken Council estimates that 1.25 billion wings will be devoured during Super Bowl Sunday. The wings will be washed down by 325.5 million gallons of beer. Party participants really dig competitive games like bags, horseshoes, Jengo and, of course, wagering a few bucks on Super Bowl squares, pools and proposition bets. Research shows that half of American adults bet on the Super Bowl, ranging from $1 squares to heftier wagers with online sports books. The Las Vegas Gaming Board reported that $119.4 million was legally gambled on last year’s Super Bowl, while an estimated $8 billion is expected to be wagered on this year’s game “outside” of Vegas. The Super Bowl has become the biggest betting extravaganza of the year, and Americans just can’t resist the allure of a wager. There you have it: the key elements of the Super Bowl that Americans have grown to love. And if the stars align in Glendale—both teams play a heartpounding game, the halftime show is rockin’, the commercials have the masses howling, and the parties are off the charts—then Super Bowl XLIX will truly be super.

NFC and the The best players from the Pro Bowl in the AFC meet and play in y 25. uar Jan , day Glendale on Sun

2015 Pro Bowl continues fantasy football format By Curt Blakeney Valley sports fans lucked out. The NFL moved the Pro Bowl to University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale on Sunday, January 25, but the game will permanently return to Honolulu in 2016. So if you’re dying to see the NFL’s biggest stars, but don’t want to throw down $1,000 for a Super Bowl ticket, you should capitalize on this opportunity to view the Pro Bowl in person. This year’s team alumni captains are Michael Irvin and Cris Carter, who will select players for their respective teams using a fantasy football-style draft, to be held Tuesday, January 20, through Wednesday, January 21, and broadcast on the NFL Network. History of the Pro Bowl Since 1970, the Pro Bowl has matched the best players from the National Football Conference (NFC) against the American Football Conference (AFC). For decades, the game was played in Hawaii one week after the Super Bowl. In 2010, the Pro Bowl was moved to the weekend before the Super Bowl, hoping to satisfy fans jonesin’ before the big game. Prior to 1995, only the coaches and players chose Pro Bowlers, but the NFL opened it to fan voting in 1996 in an

10

2015 2015 BIG BIG GAME GAME ENTERTAINMENT ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE GUIDE

effort to spur more fan interest in the game. Players generally used a Pro Bowl invite as an opportunity to get a free vacation to the Big Island. Other players had cash bonuses written into their contracts if they reached the Pro Bowl. But generally, players avoided the game because they didn’t want to get injured. Eventually, players declined invitations or simply put forth a lessthan-inspired effort on the field. The game deteriorated so badly, an AP sportswriter wrote after the 2012 game that players were “hitting each other as though they were having a pillow fight.” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell TALE OF THE TAPE MICHAEL IRVIN

at one point was ready to scrap the Pro Bowl, admitting during an interview in 2012 that if the players didn’t put forth a more inspired effort, he was “not inclined to play it anymore.” The NFL Players Association lobbied hard to keep the Pro Bowl, because it was good for players’ wallets. So in 2014, the NFL implemented a new format, trying to capitalize on the incredible popularity of fantasy football. Squads were chosen by two alumni team captains in a televised fantasy draft prior to the game. The captains of the 2014 Pro Bowl were Jerry Rice and Deion Sanders, followed by Irvin and Carter this season.

Charles Fazzino creates custom 3-D pop art.

Artist scores touchdown with Super Bowl art By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski Growing up in New York, Charles Fazzino was smitten with the lights of Broadway and pop culture. The son of a sculptor and a shoe designer, Fazzino hadn’t even thought about sports— especially football. But 15 years ago, the 3-D pop artist was asked to capture the hoopla surrounding the Super Bowl and has attended each game since. “I wasn’t a big sports fan,” Fazzino says via telephone from his New York City studio. “It happened that way over the years.” His entire Super Bowl art collection will be on display and available for sale in Phoenix at the NFL Shop inside the NFL Experience at the Phoenix Convention Center beginning January 24. As always, the collection will consist of limited edition 3-D art prints, handpainted football helmets, open-edition mini prints and poster prints. The shop is open to the public and patrons will not need an NFL Experience ticket to enter. “This is my 15th Super Bowl,” Fazzino says. “My favorite Super Bowl was XLII when the Giants beat the Patriots. I have a huge following in the Northeast. With the Giants fans and the Patriots fans, it was really great.”

He’ll have a few special guests with him as well. Former Arizona Cardinals and current Chicago Bears kicker Jay Feely will stop by at 5 p.m. Thursday, January 29; New York Giants punter Steve Weatherford at 1 p.m. Friday, January 30; and New York Jets player Quinton Coples at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 31. Fazzino has become the go-to artist for special events. Besides serving as the officially licensed artist of the NFL and the Super Bowl, he has captured Major League Baseball and the MLB AllStar Game (2003-present) and the U.S. Olympic Team (2000-present). He has also created official artwork for high-profile events, including the 2011 Centennial Celebration for the City of Fort Lauderdale, the President’s Challenge for President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, NASCAR Sprint Cup series, NHL All-Star Game, Belmont Stakes, Daytona 500, Indy 500, Andy Roddick Charity Gala, U.S. Tennis Foundation, CMA Awards, Grammy Awards, Daytime Emmy Awards, NBC’s “Today” Summer Concert Series, Rosie O’Donnell’s For All Kids Foundation and the President William J. Clinton Presidential Foundation, among many others. “All the events are hard,” he explains. “Each one of them is different. It’s really fun, though. I’ve been very blessed by

getting so many different organizations and events to really gravitate to my work and really like it. My work, because it’s 3-dimensional and a lot of handwork involved—doesn’t come across in print, on the Internet or on television. It’s hard to see the 3-D. It’s something that you have to sort of see. I like doing different things because it’s challenging, whether it’s sports or drawing my hometown, New York City or Broadway scenes. I never get bored.” He’s especially smitten with the Super Bowl because of the magnitude of the event. “The Super Bowl’s fabulous,” he says. “It’s our biggest event in the United States. That’s what I love doing with my artwork—drawing an experience, not just a stadium. “A lot of artists who paint sports art, they draw their favorite players into portraits. What I try to do is capture an experience and bring everything about the experience to the piece. It makes you feel like you’re there.”

Little Big Town will play the Taste of the NFL.

Party with renowned chefs while fighting hunger By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski Taste of the NFL isn’t fleetingly dubbed “Party with a Purpose,” but it truly helps combat hunger in cities with gridiron teams. “Here’s the impact,” says founder Wayne Kostroski via telephone. “The only purpose since 1992 is to raise awareness and dollars for hunger. The other huge difference is this event raises money not for just one location, or just the Valley area where this year’s Super Bowl is being held. Every single year, a portion of the dollars have been sent to the food bank in each of the 32 NFL cities. In 23 years, we’ve raised $22 million which equals 170 million new meals have been created all across the country.” This year it will be held from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday, January 31, at WestWorld, 16601 N. Pima Road, Scottsdale. Tickets are on sale and can be purchased at tasteofthenfl.com. “This isn’t just a ‘Come and look at celebrities and grab a bite to eat and get an autograph and photo’ party. This is the party that has it all.” The Taste of the NFL Party with a Purpose fundraising event brings together exceptional cuisine, prominent chefs from around the country, including Arizona Cardinals Celebrity Chef Beau MacMillan of Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain, along with NFL players, coaches, legends and more, all to support the fight against

hunger. Providing the entertainment is the award-winning country quartet Little Big Town, who is known for its hit “Pontoon.” “Every year we look for an act that understands what we’re doing,” he says. “Players and chefs don’t get any compensation for their appearances. Chefs dole out 1,200 portions of the good—at their own expense. It’s a labor of love and in the room you get that.” Kostroski says members of Little Big Town, who were unavailable for comment, are foodies. “They watch food shows on the bus in between shows,” Kostroski says. “We contacted them and told them this is a party with a purpose. Everything we end up with we give to the food banks this year and start over next year.’ With the Taste of the NFL acts, Kostroski explains, patrons see the “heart and soul of an entertainer.” “Little Big Town is hot right now, which is really, really good timing,” he says. “We’re anxious and happy to have them with us. They’re engaged. They happen to be a really outstanding and hot group, but they happen to be great human beings and humanitarians.” Andrew Zimmern has joined Taste of the NFL as this year’s national culinary host for its Party with a Purpose to assist in rallying the country’s top chefs to raise awareness and money. Zimmern, the creator, host and

co-executive producer of Travel Channel’s hit series, “Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern,” will lead the charge alongside national celebrity spokeswoman, Alyssa Milano. Zimmern and Milano will be in attendance. Along with Taste of the NFL comes the Diamond Dinner from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, January 29, at the Tempe Center for the Arts. Patrons are invited to buy tickets for the event that includes taste-tempting cuisine and award-winning songwriters. They will perform the hits that they have written and tell the stories behind them. Those who can’t attend the event can still support Taste of the NFL’s mission to end hunger by participating in the Kick Hunger Challenge. NFL fans can make a donation on behalf of their favorite team at KickHungerChallenge. com. All proceeds from the Kick Hunger Challenge go directly to food banks in NFL team cities including two local food banks—St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance in Phoenix and Vista del Camino Food Bank in Scottsdale. Since 1992, the nonprofit Taste of the NFL has rallied the country’s top chefs and the NFL’s greatest players to raise money in support of food banks throughout the United States. The season long efforts culminate each year with the Taste of the NFL’s Party with a Purpose. Learn more about the Kick Hunger Challenge at TasteoftheNFL.com.
