eam members at Snooze like to be called Snoozers, but don’t let that nickname fool you. This perky, cheerful bunch is driven to make sure guests get their day started on the right foot. Customers love the farm-fresh, cage-free eggs and the comforting Breakfast Pot Pie, Corned Beef Hash and the various hollandaise-topped Benedict offerings. The cafe also features a lineup of lunchtime sammies and a creative cocktail program. Bacon-infused bourbon? Yes please. Gilbert folks involved with pet rescue and other good community causes know that they can count on a Snooze pancake crew to take their fundraisers to the next level. All they have to do is ask.

And you can get all that moist, cake-y goodness from the onebite Bundtinis, to the classic 10-inch cake and the mid-size Bundlets in-between. “There’s nothing more fun than watching a new guest taste our cake for the very first time,” she said. “It’s a life-changing moment. n-N-Outs are ubiquitous now, but it all started in 1948, as a humble drive-through in California. The chain’s commitment to not growing too fast over the years and always using the freshest, highest-quality ingredients makes it the fast-food burger of choice in Gilbert, Chandler and Mesa. The hand-cut chuck and potatoes are never frozen or pre-packaged, and a microwave oven has never seen the inside of a store. Even the buns are freshly baked from a traditional, slow-rising sponge dough recipe and then toasted to perfection. The commitment to customer service is just as high. So you can get your burger Protein or Animal style. If you’re really hungry, go for the Double-Double, Triple-Triple or Quad-Quad.

lot of winter residents and locals don’t know or have forgotten by now that this hip, mid-century burger stand was the boyhood home of Agritopia entrepreneur Joe Johnston and his brothers growing up in the 1960s and ’70s. The family was making hay back then, but mouth-watering hamburgers are the cash crop now. The cafe starts with premium, locally sourced beef and pairs the patties with unusual cheese choices, melty, dreamy Fontina being the favorite. The Gouda Garlic Bacon and BBQ Bacon Blue Burger also are winners. Joe’s has a park-like patio with large trees out back if you want to let the kids roam, but the inside is truly a family room.

hen Food Network’s “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” visited Sal’s a few years ago, a guest said, “It’s a slice of New York in the middle of the desert.” That was Sal Cuffaro’s simple business plan 12 years ago, and it always will be, whether the cameras are on or off. Sal built his loyal following because of the ingenious way he combines marvelously foldable pizza with pastas, such as spaghetti and meatballs, ziti and lasagna. Busy Gilbert workers stream through for a wide slice at lunch. At dinner, families take home boxes of extra pizza slices and scrumptious garlic knots to savor the next day.

regano’s sprouted and thrived in the Arizona desert, but its roots really stretch to Chicago’s North Side, where founder Mark Russell’s dad would entertain friends and family with outstanding pizza and pasta dishes and spin the Frank Sinatra and big-band records. Oregano’s offers three kinds of lasagna and a classic eggplant parmesan. The Big Rig Pasta is another favorite, covering rigatoni with a tasty tomato-chipotle cream sauce. The classic baked sandwiches are stuffed with meaty and cheesy goodness. As everyone knows, it can be a challenge to even get into Oregano’s at times. he HUB is a great sports bar that also happens to have a destination-worthy restaurant. The 7-year-old East Mesa location is slightly more family-oriented, and kids are captivated by its big treasure chest full of toys. The Stapley HUB opened a year ago and already has a strong local presence and a lively patio atmosphere. Both feature acres of wide-screen TVs and home-grown craft beer and distilled spirits. Families would come just for the wings, but there are so many good starters, burgers, sandwiches, pizzas and entrees that you might have trouble choosing. That’s to preserve the family-friendly atmosphere and to avoid having to saddle guests with a cover charge. While you’re watching the game, enjoy the HUB’s award-winning wings or one of their many delicious burgers, sandwiches, pizzas and calzones.

Chang’s is a billion-dollar brand with more than 200 restaurants now. But, like all the restaurants, the one in Chandler Fashion Center is a scratch kitchen. There’s a whole lot of dicing of farm-fresh ingredients, hand-rolling of dim sum and wok wizardry going on back there. Signature classics include the Chang’s Lettuce Wraps, Mongolian Beef, Crispy Honey Shrimp and Cecilia’s Dumplings. Cecilia Chiang is credited for introducing America to authentic northern Chinese cooking at her Chinatown restaurant in San Francisco. Her son, Philip, continuing her legacy at his own bistro, was persuaded by a regular customer to open a restaurant in Scottsdale in 1993. His name was Paul Fleming, and that was how the P.F. Chang’s legend was born.

opgolf discovered that a heck of a lot of people like to whack golf balls, but they don’t want to spend four or five hours schlepping around 18 holes. Combine that with a country-club-class sports bar/restaurant/customer-service experience and you have a winning formula for a family fun day. Topgolf Gilbert features more than 100 climate-controlled hitting bays. You can whack to your heart’s content, but you’ll never hit one over the net. Competitive players can hit short irons to scoring circles and rack up points. During golf, or after, moms and dads can order a great selection of beverages and shareable menu items. Try the flatbreads (tell the kids it’s pizza) or one of the everyday brunch items, such as the chicken and waffle sliders.

eaving through the Usery Mountains in east Mesa, Las Sendas has defined the high-desert golf experience since 1995, when famed architect Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed the challenging layout. Las Sendas plays 5,188 yards from the forward tees and 7,004 from the tips, plus offers tee boxes in-between to suit all levels of handicaps. “If you play the right tees, it’s fine for all levels of golf,” said Rick Crowson, director of golf. “It’s definitely a shot-making course. Our views are spectacular and the golf conditions are pristine.” Daily fees at Las Sendas range from high to low depending on the season, but various membership packages entice East Valley families and retirees to enjoy year-round golf and social activities.

ilbert Public Schools is the state’s fourth-largest school district and Gilbert’s largest employer with 5,000 teachers, staffers and administrators on the payroll. Several years ago, realizing that people are the most valuable asset on the balance sheet, GPS abandoned its traditional HR office and pioneered the ground-breaking Office of Talent Management. The new model continually strives to recruit, engage and retain workers, resulting in decreased turnover and employees feeling more valued and loyal. GPS staff has an average tenure of 14.7 years. The district provides a lot more than a paycheck, too. Employees enjoy first-class health plans and wellness programs, plus many other benefits such as discounted preschool and after-school daycare.

utch Bros has Gilbert residents’ morning and afternoon coffee cravings covered with three drive-through locations. They come for the premium mochas, lattes, breves and cold brews but keep coming back for the quick and friendly service. Brothers Dane and Travis Boersma realized when they founded the Oregon-based chain in 1992 that they were in the relationship business. They emphasized speed, quality and service. Company-owned stores and franchise locations are also well known for supporting local good causes. With a not-so secret menu and new flavor combos being rotated all the time, there’s always something new to try.

They know they’re going to be full partners in a design process that goes from inspiration, to computer, to finished masterpiece. Randy Coffin and David Trout have won numerous awards for designs and won a copyright for their signature Paragon-style rings, which prevent bands from turning and keep the starring gemstones front and center. hat parents love about Chandler Dogs is they can drop off and pick up their babies any time of day or night. Well, that and the fact there’s not a cage to be found. The staffers are ga-ga for dogs and are highly trained in dog behavior and canine first aid/CPR. Daycare is stress-free. Book a 4-hour-or-less or 12-houror-less visit for $18 or $28. Pups can also get a brush and a bath or a full-service groom. Owner-founder Stephen Biles started Gilbert Dogs in 2009. He opened Chandler Dogs in 2011 and moved it into a new 8,000-square-foot facility last March. He has since expanded the concept to Tempe and Glendale. Woof!

un Lakes Chandler Animal Clinic doctors and staff have a reputation for treating dogs and cats as if they were their own. “We do a good job of caring about what we do - and liking what we do,” said Dr. Ashley Greenway, who joined the clinic in 2014 and purchased it in 2017. She has extensive training and experience in dentistry and encourages routine cleanings to prevent complicated extractions and other problems down the road. In November, Dr. Erin Garner will join the team and offer house calls. That’s sure to be a godsend for people and pets with mobility issues and clients with pets that just get stressed out about going to the clinic.

Adult patients adore his sense of humor and the office’s rock-and-roll vibe. A giant stainless-steel and neon guitar looms over the welcome desk. He and colleague Dr. Waleed Alsadi encourage all patients to have a digital retinal photography exam, which is vital for the early detection of eye health problems such as glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. hen Chandler women get the intuition that they’re pregnant, their first call is to Valley Women for Women. It’s as much about choices as it is about the all-female staff of OB/ GYN doctors, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and certified nurse midwives. Following an initial confirmation appointment, moms-to-be and their partners can opt for traditional care, which involves the standard monthly, every-other week and weekly visits up until birth. Many couples enjoy the group care path, in which women with similar due dates form small groups that meet for seven months. A provider performs individual health assessments during the sessions and then leads group discussions about pregnancy and parenting.

We try to do everything well.” Academic standards are rigorous, and the school stresses extra-curricular activities and sports for boys and girls. The Knights baseball team is a perennial state powerhouse, and the district boasts an award-winning robotics program.

ince 2011, Dance Studio C has been turning toddlers and older kids into accomplished dancers and instilling a lot of confidence and a sense of teamwork along the way. Starting out in a garage, the four-room studio bustles with all kinds of ballet, jazz, tap, hip hop and tumbling classes. Students are taught by passionate, experienced teachers and choreographers and by director Chaney Gifford-Lucas. The Princess Combo class is especially popular. Tots learn basic techniques with the ability to wear princess dresses once a month and learn fairytale dances. The studio also teaches pom, Latin ballroom and offers an advanced competitive dance company.

rom humble beginnings in Gilbert’s Farmhouse Village in 2007, Wilkins Learning Center has grown into the town’s premier childcare and preschool program. The motto, “The Wilkins Way,” grew out of those early days and 480-497-3300 was coined by grateful parents who realized there was something gilbertschools.net special in the way their children were being treated and taught. The Wilkins Way Approach is a simple but very effective three-legged stool: love; respect; make learning fun. The half-day and all-day preschool/pre-K programs combine academic concepts and fun activities with the goal of giving children a giant head start in kindergarten.

iberty Arts Academy teachers make sure their 200-plus students know reading, writing, math and basic technology inside and out, but their preK-8th-grade charges also are exposed to a healthy dose of drawing, sculpting, art history and music every week. “Fine arts are a large part of who we are and what we do,” said principal Brady Wald. Wald said the public charter school’s 7th- and 8th-graders are encouraged to mentor younger students and spend extra time with kids who may be struggling. Many Liberty graduates move on to Desert Hills High in Gilbert and Apache Trail High in Apache Junction, charter schools also managed by the Leona Group.

hat Gilbert High School Tiger is surely the coolest cat in the East Valley. indsey O’Brien runs her third-grade classroom like a highfunctioning family. Everyone honors and respects one another while collaborating, communicating, discussing and embracing differences. In her 16th year at EduPrize, O’Brien has her kids use iPads and Chromebooks to put a technological twist on lessons in math, reading and writing. Students also are exposed to the school’s unique Cottages program themed quarterly units that explore science in a fun, hands-on way. O’Brien said many former students are now friends, inviting her to birthday parties, weddings and baby showers. “When they leave my classroom, they are confident, smarter and deeper thinkers,” she said. “They also know that they are loved and always have a friend in me.”

s chair of the Physical Education Department and sports training teacher at Campo Verde, Nick Cornell loves watching uncertain ninth-graders improve their strength and speed and turn into confident and explosive varsity athletes. But that is a secondary goal for him. “Even more important is developing character and skills,” he said. “My hope is that they become great human beings.” In his 26th year of teaching, Cornell has been at Campo Verde since it opened in 2009 and is also an assistant coach for the Coyotes football team. “I’m so fortunate.
