n 2003, two guys with 17 years of taco and tequila experience called on all the favors they could to open a restaurant and turn their taco and tequila “slingin’” into a lifelong gig. Now, nearly 17 years later, Fernando and Tim have fostered not one but three great Mexican food restaurants. Come in to Nando’s Mexican Cafe for some of the best Mexican food in town. Between Mexican pizza layered with guacamole, chopped tomatoes, diced green chiles, shredded cheese and green onions and Mesquite Tacos stuffed with grilled mesquite flavored steak, chicken or pork, you’re taste buds are sure to be watering. You can even finish off your meal with a churro ice cream sandwich, chocolate nachos, fried ice cream and so much more.

t Kona Grill, one thing is held higher than anything else: fresh ingredients. In addition to hand-selecting fish, meats and produce for their innovative dishes, Kona Grill makes their hand-crafted cocktails, desserts and more than 40 sauces in-house every day. From the beginning of their first restaurant, which opened in Scottsdale in 1998, Kona Grill has strived to make the experiences of every guest exceptional. Come in and try their award-winning sushi while also getting a taste of the staff’s hospitality. Between their Kona BBQ ribs, sweet-chili glazed salmon and pad Thai noodles, you’re bound to find something you love.

THIRD PLACE Wild Ginger Asian Bistro 861 N. Higley Road, #111 480-907-7717 wildgingeraz.com

ilbert workers and residents have a lot of choices when it comes to Asian food, but for those times when only Thai will do, they head straight for Thai Chili. The pad Thai is a favorite, as well as the lineup of colorful curries. Many diners kick things off with spring rolls, dumplings or hot-and-sour soup, and if there’s still some room in the tank, you can finish up with a sweet sticky rice dessert or coconut ice cream. Most dishes are gluten-free and cooked with non-GMO rice oil. The original full-service restaurant’s popularity has spawned the expansion of convenient Thai Chili 2 Go outlets in Gilbert, Chandler, Queen Creek, Mesa, Scottsdale, Santan and Phoenix.

t many sports bars around the East Valley, the penalty flags fly when it comes to the menu. Not true at Blue 32. This locally owned Gilbert favorite prides itself every bit as much (maybe more) on its food quality as it does on being a prime event destination. Burgers are ground fresh, and steaks and seafood are hand-cut in house daily. Sandwiches and salads are topped with homemade sauces and dressings. The MVP is the Black and Blue 32 Burger, seasoned with blackened spices and topped with bleu cheese crumbles and bacon. Go full steakhouse with the grilled ribeye, followed by a pizookie for dessert.

here’s not a bad seat in the house when you watch the games at either of Blue 32’s Gilbert locations. You’ll find about 30 or more strategically positioned screens around the sports bars, some up to 65 inches. On Sundays in the fall, the bars open an hour before kickoff and roll out a special breakfast menu. Fans fuel their tableside tailgates with icy buckets of domestic and premium beer bottles. The craft pints, bloody marys and mimosas flow as well. Baseball, golf, soccer, tennis and other sports fans feel just at home here, too. Ask a friendly bartender or server if they can tune in on a specific event you’re interested in.

here’s one thing you can always count on when stopping at a Dutch Bros. in Gilbert for a quick pick me up: quality customer service. Since starting Dutch Bros. in Oregon in 1992, Dane and Travis Boersma have been committed to ensuring fast and friendly service as well as high-quality products. Dutch Bros. makes so much more than just good coffee, though. With rebels, smoothies, teas, and just about any mixture you can think of, you might even have a hard time choosing what you want to drink. Check out their not-so secret menu for something unique and different. And don’t forget to pick up a stamp card on your way out.

The Mom’s Homemade Pancakes are so huge that they have a warning flag on the menu — May Cause Drowsiness — but that doesn’t stop anyone from adding an egg or two or a side of homemade sausage. Other patrons are big fans of the Paul Bunyan and the Barn Buster, which fulfill all of their egg, pork, potato and bready dreams. Get your gravy on with one of the Benedicts. t’s fitting that Rise Up Bakery’s signature cookie is called the OverAchiever. The brilliant blend of oats, chocolate chips, coconut, pretzels and cornflakes combine to create all kinds of chewy-crunchy-salty-sweet alpha perfection. Because that’s what husband-and-wife owners Baker Jay and Danielle Lunt are, too. Not content to rest on their success or laurels since opening in 2014, the couple recently hired an international consultant to unlock the flaky secret of French croissants. The ham and cheese, pain au chocolat and the kouign amann (the oh-so-good Brittany variation) have been bestsellers. Of course, when there are those times when only a lemon bar, cinnamon roll or a loaf of Apple Cinnamon Swirl will do, Rise Up Bakery can help you out there, too.

Gilbert residents, heartened by the sandwich shop’s mission, flocked to the place in droves, prompting a move to a sleek new space in Gilbert Town Square near the Regal Cinemas Gilbert 14 over a year ago. The café and patio also include a One More Bite Bakery outlet and a small Bergies operation that custom roasts the NYT Deli Blend. regano’s sprouted and thrived in the Arizona desert, but its roots really stretch to Chicago’s North Side, where founder Mark Russell’s dad would entertain friends and family with outstanding pizza and pasta dishes and spin Frank Sinatra and big band records. The Gilbert restaurant embraces that nostalgic ambience and carries on the family legacy of providing great food and over-the-top hospitality. Oregano’s offers a variety of pastas as well as pan, thin crust and stuffed pizza. The Big Rig Pasta is a favorite, covering rigatoni with a tasty tomato chipotle cream sauce. The classic baked sandwiches are stuffed with meaty and cheesy goodness. As everyone knows, it can be a challenge to even get into Oregano’s at times. Sal built his loyal following because of the ingenious way he combines marvelously foldable pizza with pastas such as spaghetti and meatballs, ziti and lasagna. n-N-Outs are ubiquitous now, but it all started in 1948 as a humble drive-through in California. The chain’s commitment to not growing too fast over the years and to always using the freshest, highest-quality ingredients make it the burger of choice in Gilbert. The hand-cut chuck and potatoes are never frozen or pre-packaged, and a microwave oven has never seen the inside of a store. Even the buns are freshly baked from a traditional, slow-rising sponge dough recipe, then toasted to perfection. The commitment to customer service is just as high. You can get your burger Protein or Animal style, and, if you’re really hungry, go for the DoubleDouble, Triple-Triple or Quad-Quad.

hen the owners of Arizona’s Dukes of Air, John and Tonya Kubacki, moved here from Wisconsin, they could sense that many homeowners didn’t think very highly of the AC repair technicians they had dealt with previously. “We wanted to revolutionize the perception of the HVAC contractor one customer at a time,” said Tonya. The Kubackis and their technicians bring years of knowledge, experience and integrity to each job. Gilbert and other East Valley residents also appreciate the company’s community involvement. The Dukes are active with various schools, subdivisions and local sports sponsorships. Following an initial confirmation appointment, moms-to-be and their partners can opt for traditional care, which involves the standard monthly, every other week and weekly visits up until birth. Many couples enjoy the group care path, in which women with similar due dates form small groups that meet for seven months. But while they may be doing things that their grandparents never learned till much later in school, Risinger said she makes sure kindergarteners don’t lose their chance to play. “We want to have them prepared with what they will need in the future, but at the same time I don’t want to see them robbed of the brain development they get through playing and interacting with each other,” she said.
