You’ll find about 30 or more strategically positioned screens around the sports bars, some up to 65 inches. hen they created Not Your Typical Deli in 2016, Chef W and his wife, Vanessa Luna, their investment partners and their employees — most of whom are young autistic adults — didn’t quite realize what a beast they were unleashing. Gilbert residents, heartened by the sandwich shop’s mission, ﬂocked to the place in droves, prompting a move to a sleek new space in Gilbert Town Square near the Regal Cinemas Gilbert 14 over a year ago. The café and patio also include a One More Bite Bakery outlet and a small Bergies operation that custom roasts the NYT Deli Blend. Although none of it would have happened without the delicious, Italian-style sandwiches, Chef W said it’s all on the very special employees. “They’re running the show now. This is their restaurant. It’s amazing what these kids have done.”

Friends is stronger than ever now that it’s in a brand-new, 8,500-square-foot building near Baseline Road and Stapley Drive, which has plenty of space for boarding, play, education, grooming and administrative tasks performed by the mostly volunteer staff. For 20 years, the shelter operated out of three single family homes on Vaughn Street downtown. The new facility was made possible through generous bequests from everyday people. “I knew we we’re making an impact on dogs’ and cats’ lives,” said spokesman Barb Savoy. “I didn’t quite realize the impact we were having on people.” Friends for Life Animal Rescue holds the wildly popular BARKtoberfest every year to fundraise money for its animals.
