Cheez-It Bowl 7 p.m. Wednesday, December 26 • Chase Field, 401 E. Jefferson Street, Phoenix By Eric Newman The Cheez-It Bowl features two teams that, despite 254 combined years of football, have never faced off. The Cal Golden Bears take on the TCU Horned Frogs on Wednesday, December 26, at Chase Field. In its first year as the Cheez-It Bowl, the Phoenix-based competition was called the Cactus Bowl since 2015. “It is a great honor to host these two accomplished teams in the Valley for a unique matchup played on a baseball diamond turned gridiron,” says Steve Leach, Cheez-It Bowl Board of Directors chairman. “We are excited to extend Arizona hospitality to these two fan bases for a family-friendly day complete with

Sun Devil Stadium and Chase Field have hosted the football event. There have been 36 teams to

compete in the game, with alumni including NFL stars Le’Veon Bell, Drew Bledsoe, Aaron Rodgers and Tyler Lockett, proving the committee can book teams with future stars. Notably, the UCLA Bruins, led by the Arizona Cardinals’ top draft-pick in quarterback Josh Rosen, played Kansas State in last year’s iteration. Again, this year’s bowl features a Pac-12 vs. Big 12 matchup. Kansas State’s 35-17 victory over the Bruins in 2017 moved its conference’s overall record to 12-5 in the last 17 matchups. Cal won two of its last three games to reach a 7-5 record, and TCU finished the regular season 6-4. Neither team enters the game ranked.

University of California Golden Bears By Eric Newman The University of California heads to Phoenix for its third appearance in the newly dubbed Cheez-It Bowl. Its last appearance in 2003 in the then-known Insight Bowl came against Virginia Tech. Future NFL star quarterback Aaron Rodgers led the Golden Bears to a thrilling 52-49 win over the Hokies. With five national championships under its belt, Cal has slumped in its regular seasons, playing in just its third bowl game since 2011. The Golden Bears last won a bowl game in 2015, defeating Air Force 55-36 in the Armed Forces Bowl. The last Big 12 opponent to face Cal in a bowl game was Texas in the 2011 Holiday Bowl, when the Golden Bears lost 21-10. The Golden Bears ran the table in nonconference play, going 3-0 in their first three games. Soon, they realized conference play wasn’t that easy, as they lost three straight conference matchups. They won four of six to finish 4-5

in the conference and 7-5 overall. Its most significant victory came at home against the Rose Bowl-bound Washington Huskies on October 27. Cal was the only unranked team to beat the Huskies this season. Cal has shuffled through two different starting quarterbacks,

There is no single dominant receiver, as six Golden Bears have over 15 catches and 175 yards on the season. Patrick Laird leads the team on the ground with 932 yards and five touchdowns.

When Cal is rolling, its defense is one of the best in the conference. The Golden Bears held Washington to just 10 points, and high-powered Washington State to 19 the week after. They will need similar production from their defense to contain a TCU team that loves to move the ball.

Texas Christian University Horned Frogs By Eric Newman The Texas Christian University Horned Frogs’ trip to the Cheez-It Bowl is their ninth appearance in a bowl game since 2010. Helming the team for 24 years, Gary Patterson is the school’s all-time winningest coach. He led TCU to an undefeated 2011 season, followed the next year by the school’s only other appearance in the Cactus Bowl. The Horned Frogs lost a close game to Michigan

State, 17-16, in 2012. This year, TCU won two games to start the season, but a 12-point loss to Rose Bowl-bound Ohio State on September 15 sent them tumbling. The Horned Frogs lost five of their next six games, including four of five to start Big 12 play. However, the defense played significantly better in November, and the team won three of its last four to reach 6-6 overall and clinch bowl eligibility. It was a bit of a down year for the Horned Frogs, who failed to beat a ranked team for the first time since 2013, when they went 4-6. That was just the second time TCU missed a bowl game since Patterson led the team to the postseason in 2000. Unlike years past, including Kenny Hill’s 3,152-yard season in 2017, TCU struggled to find a dominant passer. The Horned Frogs had two starting quarterbacks in Shawn Robinson and Michael Collins, neither of whom accumulated even 1,500 yards through the air. Jalen Reagor is the

far-and-away top receiver with over 1,000 yards and nine touchdowns. The Horned Frogs have six players who ran over 100 yards, but Darius Anderson is the team leader with just 598. TCU’s strength is its near-automatic short-range field goal kicking. The Horned Frogs have made 36 of a possible 37 extra points this year.

Nova Home Loans Arizona Bowl 11:15 a.m. Saturday, December 29 • Arizona Stadium, 545 N. National Championship Drive, Tucson By Eric Newman Relatively new to the game, the NOVA Home Loans Bowl was only sanctioned by the NCAA in 2015. It is the state’s third sanctioned bowl and the only one in Tucson. The last iteration bolstered the Tucson economy by $30 million and generated $50,000 in grants for local school teachers. This year, Tucson welcomes 8-4 Arkansas State Red Wolves and 7-5 Nevada Wolf Pack. Airing on CBS, the bowl features teams from the Sun Belt and Mountain West conferences. “We are thrilled to welcome both the Red Wolves and the Wolf Pack and their entire family, friends and legion of fans to Tucson,” says Kym Adair, NOVA Home Loans Arizona

Bowl’s executive director. “We continue to attract outstanding football programs to our bowl and this year is clearly no exception. We are anxious to extend our hospitality and gorgeous weather along with our lineup of pregame

activities that will make it an event like no other in Southern Arizona.” The 2017 game saw New Mexico State take down Utah State in a 26-20 overtime thriller, proving to be one of the season’s most exciting postseason games. Notably, both teams are nicknamed the “Aggies.” The bowl represents Arkansas State’s first appearance in Tucson for postseason play, while Nevada took part in the first competition in 2015, beating Colorado State 28-23. The two teams play very different styles, as Nevada lights up the field on offense for over 450 yards a game, while the Red Wolves embrace a more defensive style, allowing no more than 17 points in their last four contests.

Arkansas State University Red Wolves By Eric Newman New Mexico State broke the longest bowl drought with its appearance in last year’s NOVA Home Loans Bowl. Arkansas State has been a fixture in postseason play. The Red Wolves have participated in eight consecutive bowl games; 16 in their history. They have won 67 games since 2011, which is a school record for wins in eight seasons. The Red Wolves’ story is one of streaks this year. Arkansas State won three of its first four games, losing only to undefeated No. 1 Alabama in week two. Then, the Red Wolves slumped to three losses in their next four games, including a 35-9 drubbing at home against Appalachian State. However, they dominated in November play to win four straight and end the season with an 8-4 record. Coach Blake Anderson said the team is proud to appear in the game. “We’re excited to continue our season at the Arizona Bowl,” he says. “This will obviously be

and six interceptions. His top receiver is junior Kirk Merritt, who accumulated 939 yards and seven touchdowns. However, Arkansas State succeeds mostly when its defense is elite. In November, the Red Wolves won each of their games, allowing no more than 17 points in any of them.

University of Nevada Wolf Pack By Eric Newman The University of Nevada won the first NOVA Home Loans Arizona Bowl, defeating Colorado State 28-23 in December 2015. The Wolf Pack started slowly this season, going 3-4 in its first seven games after a 31-27 loss versus Boise State. However, they ended the year winning four of their last five to reach bowl eligibility with a 7-5 record and 5-3 in the Mountain West Conference. Though the four-year seniors who have been with the program are

familiar with Tucson and this game, it will be a new experience for Nevada’s coach. “We are honored to have this awesome opportunity to play in the NOVA Home Loans Arizona Bowl,” says Nevada’s second-year head coach Jay Norvell. “Arkansas State is a terrific program and we are excited for the challenge of playing them. I’m thrilled for our 17 seniors to have a chance to play in one more college games in their careers.” Nevada is an offense-first team that averages over 450 yards a game. Senior quarterback Ty Gangi has over 3,100 yards through the air, spreading the ball out to a plethora of receivers. Nine players have 10 or more catches for over 100 yards. Freshman Toa Taua leads the rushing attack, having carried the ball 156 times for 816 yards and six touchdowns. To beat a successful Arkansas State team, Nevada’s defense will

have to step up. Though the Wolf Pack is a high-scoring team, it tends to give up huge point totals in their losses. Arkansas State’s defense is stout, so the Wolf Pack D might have to perform well to win.

State Farm Stadium

PlayStation Fiesta Bowl 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 1 • State Farm Stadium, One Cardinals Drive, Glendale By Eric Newman Established in 1971, the Fiesta Bowl has a storied history of great matchups, including the famed Boise State “Statue of Liberty” play to beat Oklahoma in 2007. Two seasons ago, Clemson shut out Ohio State en route to the national championship game win over Alabama. Last season, Penn State and current NFL rookie running back Saquon Barkley defeated Washington in a thrilling 35-28 game on December 30. In the Fiesta Bowl’s 48th rendition, undefeated No. 8 University of Central Florida takes on No. 11 LSU in what is the only bowl game in Arizona to feature two ranked teams. UCF makes its second appearance in the game, while LSU is making its debut. “One exciting aspect is having

Of course, UCF has been on an impressive roll the last two seasons and in its first trip here, the Knights put on quite

a show. The Fiesta Bowl has a great tradition of putting on a worldclass college football bowl game with unique matchups and we are looking forward to continuing that when the Tigers and Knights come to town.” The Knights are in a familiar situation: undefeated against a high-powered SEC team. Last year, they argued for a spot in the playoffs, and proved their power against an Auburn squad that beat Georgia and Alabama before the two teams’ championship game appearance. “It is a great honor to host two of the most prolific college football teams who bring with them extremely passionate fan groups,” says Steve Leach, Fiesta Bowl Board of Directors chairman. “We look forward to showing them all that Arizona has to offer, including the Fiesta Bowl hospitality that we are known for.”

Joe Burrow

Louisiana State University Tigers By Eric Newman LSU enters this game after one of its most memorable games. The Tigers traveled to Texas A&M on November 24 and lost to the No. 22 Aggies 72-74 in seven overtimes. The Tigers roared to a 5-1 start, hitting top five in the power rankings before its 27-19 first loss at SEC rival Florida (No. 22). They then won two straight before being shut out by No. 1 and championship-favorite Alabama 29-0. The Tigers ended the season 9-3, losing only to top 25-ranked teams. LSU is a run-first offense, as three rushers – Nick Brossette, Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Joe Burrow – all have over 100 carries and seven touchdowns on the ground. Meanwhile, the passing game is limited, as quarterback Burrow has only thrown for 2,500 yards and just 12 touchdowns. Even in the seven-OT game, Burrow only had 270 yards through the air. His highest total, and the only time he reached over 300,

was a 307-yard performance against Rice. LSU’s success is predicated on its defense. Besides the fluke 72 they gave up against the Aggies at the end of the year, in which both teams were tied 31-31 at the end of regulation, the Tigers gave up no more than 29 points in a single game. That was Alabama’s second-

The Tigers are loaded with NFL draft-ready prospects, including likely All-American in defensive back Greedy Williams. However, he will forego the Fiesta Bowl appearance to prepare for the draft, where he is projected to go

in the top 10. Adding to LSU’s problems in the defensive backfield, defensive back Kristian Fulton went down this year with an ankle injury. The two losses leave a big hole in the secondary, especially against one of the NCAA’s top-scoring offenses, but few teams have the same depth LSU does in its defensive unit.

University of Central Florida Knights By Eric Newman The UCF Knights have had the NCAA’s best record for the past two seasons, having gone 25-0 since the beginning of 2017. Last year, the Knights were undefeated but reportedly felt they were snubbed from the four-team NCAA college football playoffs. Instead, UCF played No. 7 Auburn in the Peach Bowl and won 34-27 in an exciting game. UCF still proclaimed itself “national champions” and hung a banner on campus as the lone undefeated squad. Alabama actually won the top prize, defeating Georgia in overtime. This year was more of the same for UCF. Alabama, Clemson and Notre Dame all traversed the regular season without losses, but the Knights still felt they had an argument to take the fourth spot in the playoffs. Even so, the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl against No. 11 LSU is a chance to prove its power against a

UCF’s junior quarterback McKenzie Milton has been the offensive leader in 24 of the team’s 25 victories over the past two seasons and threw for 2,663 yards and 25 touchdowns before going down with an injury. His backup, Darriel Mack Jr., replaced him in the American Athletic Conference Championship win over Memphis, throwing for 348 yards and helping the offense put up 56 points.

Twin brothers, and the top two defenders last season, Shaquill and Shaquem Griffin were lost to the NFL draft so the Knights gave up a lot of points this season, even in wins. However, the offense has been one of the country’s best and will be tested against LSU’s stout defense.

Everclear

Everclear power-pops its way to Arizona Bowl By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski Everclear singer Art Alexakis and college football go way back, as the Rose Bowl parade and game persuaded his family to head west where he was later inspired to write songs like “Santa Monica.” “My mom saw the Rose Parade on a color TV in a breakroom while she was working in downtown Detroit as a waitress at Stouffer’s in 1958,” Alexakis says. “She saw people in bathing suits twirling batons in the sunshine. It was probably 40 below in Michigan. She thought, ‘We might be poor and hungry, but we’re going to be poor and hungry in California.’” It’s not California, but Alexakis will spend the holidays, specifically December 29, in Arizona’s sun when Everclear headlines the Nova Home Loans Arizona Bowl’s Goal Post Party. The top 10 band, who originated in Portland in 1991,

One thing about Everclear is the band has never subscribed to a specific genre, moving from grunge to pop-punk and back to grunge. The L.A.-based collective released its landmark album So Much for the Afterglow more than 20 years ago, finding hits with “Everything to Everyone,” “I Will Buy You a New Life” and “Father of Mine.”

Alexakis, who hosts a show on SiriusXM’s Lithium, is working on a solo record. “It’s my first solo record,” he says. “I’m about halfway through. It’s all acoustic guitar so far, with a little electric – nothing distorted. It’s more like acoustic power-pop and some weird things here and there.” In the meantime, he’s excited about the Nova Home Loans Arizona Bowl event. “My wife is from Tucson and my mother-in-law lives in Tucson,” he says. “I go to Tucson three to four times a year. My wife and daughter go twice as music. It’s going to be fun to be there on the 29th.” Nova Home Loans Arizona Bowl 11:15 a.m. Saturday, December 29 Arizona Stadium, 545 N.
