Cheez-It Bowl
8:15 p.m. Friday, December 27 • Chase Field, 401 E. Jefferson Street, Phoenix By Christopher Boan The 2019 Cheez-It Bowl will be a battle of philosophical differences, as pass-happy Washington State University and run-first Air Force meet on the gridiron. The Cougars and Falcons have never met in 163 seasons of football combined but will meet under the lights of Chase Field in downtown Phoenix on Friday, December 27. The game, which kicks off at 8:15 p.m. local time, pits a 10-2 Falcons team making its first postseason appearance since 2016 against a 6-6 Cougars squad coached by Mike Leach. This year’s exhibition will be the second time in the game’s history, which dates back to 1989, that a member of the Mountain West Conference takes the field. Such a unique matchup is a dream

come true for Mike Nealy, who serves as the bowl game’s executive director. “Air Force and Washington State bring some of the most explosive offenses in all of college football, representing two great conferences in the Mountain West and Pac-12,” Nealy says. “We’ve been fortunate to host the Cougars before and are excited to welcome the Falcons and their international fan base into the Cheez-It Bowl family later this month.” The Cougars wrapped up the 2019 regular season with a 3-6 mark in Pac12 play, after falling to in-state rival, Washington, 31-13 in the Apple Cup on Friday, November 29. The Cheez-It Bowl has been hosted in two cities, kicking off for the first time at the University of Arizona’s Arizona Stadium in front of an announced crowd of 38,000 fans.
The exhibition then moved to the Valley, with ASU’s Sun Devil Stadium and Chase Field hosting contests over the years. The bowl game has played host to 37 teams during its history, with Air Force being the newest addition to the fraternity of invitees. Last year’s bowl game saw the Texas Christian University Horned Frogs and Cal Golden Bears compete on the same field, with the Horned Frogs winning a defensive slugfest, 10-7. This year’s game features teams heading in opposite directions, a Falcons team that won its last seven regular season contests to finish with a 7-1 mark in conference play, while the Cougars lost three of their final five contests to finish at .500 for the year. Tickets for the Cheez-It Bowl start at $35 and are available by visiting cheezitbowl.com.

Air Force Academy Falcons By Christopher Boan The Air Force Academy Falcons enter their inaugural Cheez-It Bowl appearance on a roll. The Falcons (10-2, 7-1) finished the regular season with seven consecutive victories, with six of those coming against fellow Mountain West Conference foes. Air Force is making its 27th bowl game appearance, with a 12-131 mark all time in such games, including a 45-21 win in the 2016 Nova Home Loans Arizona Bowl, over South Alabama. The Falcons are coached by Troy Calhoun, who has been the head man in Colorado Springs for 13 seasons, posting a 97-69 record at the school. His 2019 team is the first since that 2016 squad to qualify for a bowl game, with the team’s resurgence coming in large part to their dynamic rushing attack, which averaged 292.5 yards per game this season. The Falcons’ offense runs through 6-foot-2-inch quarterback, Donald Hammond III, who threw for 1,286 yards and 13 touchdowns, while adding 491 yards and 11 touchdowns on the ground. Calhoun’s team utilizes the triple option offense, which uses misdirection and shifting of

formations before the snap to catch opponents off-balance. The Falcons utilize both fullbacks and running backs in their groundand-pound offense, with backs, Kadin Remsberg Jr., Timothy Jackson and Taven Birdow all finishing with more than 700 rushing yards this year. Air Force’s passing game has heavily relied on receivers, Geraud Sanders and Benjamin Waters, who finished with 736 and 646 receiving yards in 12 contests, respectively. The team’s first big win of the year came in Boulder, against in-state opponent, the University of Colorado, who the Falcons beat, 30-23 in overtime on September 14. The team followed that victory with double-digit wins over San Jose State, Fresno State, Hawaii and Utah State, pushing its record to 6-2 at the time. A 17-13 squeaker of a win over fellow service academy, Army, was followed by double-digit victories over MWC foes, Colorado State, New Mexico and Wyoming, closing out a 10-2-year for the Falcons. The team’s lone losses of the year came against 20th ranked Boise State University, who handled the Falcons, 30-19. The other defeat for Air Force came at the hands of Navy, who beat the Falcons in Annapolis, Maryland, 34-25 on October 5.
Those in attendance at this year’s Cheez-It Bowl can expect to see the Falcons run the ball over and over again, with an offense that’s predicated on methodical runs up the gut, offset by swing plays and quick passes. The Falcons are at their best when they’re able to chew up yardage on early down run plays, before using their skill position players to make big plays in the open field. Calhoun’s team will need that type of efficiency to knock off the Cougars in Phoenix on December 27, against an eager Cougars team that’s looking to avenge its late season slide.

Washington State Cougars By Christopher Boan The Washington State Cougars are heading to the Valley of the Sun for their second appearance in the Cheez-It Bowl. The Cougars finished the 2019 regular season with a 6-6 record in the Pac-12 Conference, qualifying for their fifth-straight bowl game. The team, which is coached by Mike Leach, lost three of its last five games, including a 31-13 defeat to in-state rival, Washington, to close the year on November 29. The Cougars are a pass-happy team, led by 6-foot 3-inch redshirt senior quarterback Anthony Gordon, who threw for 5,228 yards and 45 touchdowns this season. Gordon led all Football Bowl Subdivision quarterbacks this season in the former category, while placing second overall in passing touchdowns. The Cougars finished with two receivers that had more than 900 receiving yards, in Brandon Arconado (942) and Easop Winston Jr. (927), while Dezmon Patmon had 740 yards for Leach’s team. Running back Max Borghi

finished with more than 1,300 offensive yards, with 790 yards on the ground and 566 receiving yards for the Cougars this season. The Cougars’ defense was a bit suspect at times this season, finishing 113th out of 130 FBS teams in yards per game allowed (456.8). The standouts for Leach’s defense this year included linebacker Jahad Woods, who finished the regular season with 121 tackles, with three sacks, two forced fumbles and an interception to his name. The Cougars have played in 14 bowl games in their 100-year history, with a 7-7 mark in previous contests. They played in the 2018 Alamo Bowl, where they defeated Iowa State, 28-26, to earn their first bowl victory since the 2015 season. The Cougars’ previous trip to the Cheez-It Bowl came in 1992 (then called the Copper Bowl), with Washington State beating Utah, 31-28 in Tucson. Leach has coached in Pullman for eight seasons, posting a 55-46 mark with the Cougars, while winning the Pac-12 Coach of the Year award in 2015 and 2018.
Fans at this year’s Cheez-It Bowl can expect a 60-minute air raid from Leach and company, as the Cougars averaged 55.7 passing attempts per game this season. The Cougars have never faced Air Force, but are 39-14-1 against opponents from the Mountain West Conference. Washington State has faced the other 11 teams from the MWC, with the Falcons being the lone standout to date.

Nova Home Loans Arizona Bowl
2:30 p.m. Tuesday, December 31 • Arizona Stadium, 545 N. National Championship Drive, Tucson By Christopher Boan The fifth annual Nova Home Loans Arizona Bowl pits two newcomers in the University of Wyoming and Georgia State University. This year’s contest will be held on New Year’s Eve for the first time, bringing a pair of teams that finished with 7-5 records to the Old Pueblo. The Arizona Bowl is the third sanctioned bowl in the state and the only one in Tucson, featuring teams from the Mountain West and Sun Belt conferences. Executive Director Kym Adair expressed her excitement at welcoming the Cowboys and Panthers to Tucson for the first time, saying both will add to the fledgling bowl game’s legacy. “We could not be more thrilled to have the Wyoming versus Georgia State match up in the Nova Home Loans Arizona Bowl,” Adair says. “These two powerful programs are going to add fireworks on the field in addition to the fireworks in sky post game. We can’t wait to see all the Southern Arizona fans join these two fan bases at Arizona Stadium on December 31.” This year’s game features a GSU team that rebounded from a 2-10 finish

in 2018 to finish third in the Sun Belt’s East Division, going 4-4 in conference play. The Panthers are helmed by thirdyear coach Shawn Elliott and have wins over Southeastern Conference power, Tennessee and Army, to go with their conference victories. The Panthers’ football team was launched in 2010, playing its games at Georgia State Stadium, located inside the former Turner Field, where the Atlanta Braves baseball team once played. The Cowboys are led by fifth year coach Craig Bohl, who has a 35-40 record in Laramie since arriving from North Dakota State in 2013. Bohl has led the Cowboys to four consecutive seasons of .500 or better football, qualifying for three bowl games in their previous four seasons. The Cowboys started their 2019 season with a 37-31 upset victory over Missouri of the SEC, before beating Texas State and Idaho in succession. Wyoming finished fourth in the Mountain West’s Mountain Division this year, posting a 4-4 mark against conference foes. The Cowboys play their home games at War Memorial Stadium, which is the highest stadium, in terms of elevation, in the 130-team Football
Bowl Subdivision, at 7,215 feet. The 2019 contest will be the first edition of the bowl game to kick off on New Year’s Eve, anchoring a full slate of events scheduled in town that day to celebrate the arrival of 2020. Fans who make the trek to Tucson for the contest will have a chance to partake in the Downtown Pep Rally at 5 p.m. Monday, December 30, at Jacome Plaza (101 N. Stone Avenue), featuring both schools’ marching bands, as well as cheerleaders and mascots. The New Year’s Eve schedule of events includes the Desert Diamond Casino Tailgate Festival, which includes food and beer vendors, a car show and more, at 10 a.m. Other events on the December 31 include the inaugural Downtown New Year’s Eve Bowl Bash, which kicks off at 6 p.m., with an assortment of entertainment options, an ice-skating rink, and even the world’s largest piñata. The final event of the year is the first dropping of the Tucson Taco, designed by local artist, Joe Pagac, which will coincide with fireworks, off the roof of the historic Hotel Congress downtown. University of Wyoming Cowboys By Christopher Boan Making trips to various postseason bowl games have become second nature to the Wyoming Cowboys under sixth-year coach, Craig Bohl. Bohl, who came to Laramie from Football Championship Subdivision power, North Dakota State, in 2013, has led the Cowboys to a .500 or better record in four straight seasons. The Cowboys did just that in 2019, finishing the season with a 7-5 record, while going 4-4 in Mountain West Conference play. Bohl’s team started its year on a high note, upsetting Missouri of the SEC, 37-31 in Laramie to open the year, before rolling over Texas State and Idaho in succession, 23-14 and 21-16. The Cowboys have one of the most ferocious running games in the country, averaging 208.5 yards per game on the ground, ranking 27th out of 130 Football Bowl Subdivision teams in the process. Bohl and company finished the season with an unblemished 6-0 mark at home this year, capping off their first perfect home slate since the 1996 season. A big part of the team’s rise to success this season stemmed from

the team’s staunch defense, which ranked 11th in the nation in point per game allowed (17.8) and ninth overall in rushing yards allowed per game (99.4). The Cowboys have appeared in 15 bowl games in 108 seasons of football, going 7-8 in such contests. They won their last bowl game, defeating Central Michigan, 37-14, in the 2017 Famous Idaho Potatoes Bowl in Boise. This year’s squad is led offensively by sophomore back Xazavian Valladay, who gained 1,061 yards on 221 carries this year, with five scores in 12 games. Quarterback Sean Chambers finished second in rushing yards (567), while throwing for 915 yards. Chambers was responsible for 17 touchdowns offensively, with 10 coming on the ground and another seven through the air. Three Cowboys finished with more than 250 receiving yards, with Raghib Ismail Jr. leading the way (305 yards), followed by Austin Conway (296 yards) and Josh Harshman (259 yards). Kicker Cooper Rothe was another scoring threat for Bohl’s team this season, connecting on 14 of 20 attempts, with a long of 48 yards for
the Cowboys. The Cowboys and Georgia State University have never played each other, though Wyoming has a 9-2 alltime record against current Sun Belt Conference teams. Wyoming’s last appearance in a Grand Canyon State bowl game came in 1993, when they lost to Kansas State, 52-17, in the Copper Bowl. Whether the team’s trip to the Old Pueblo will fare any better this time around is yet to be seen, but Bohl’s team is ready to take on the challenge, come New Year’s Eve.

Georgia State Panthers By Christopher Boan The Georgia State University Panthers are heading to their third bowl game in 10 seasons of competitive action. The Panthers finished the 2019 regular season with a 7-5 record in the Sun Belt Conference, a year after finishing with a 2-10 mark. They’ll play the University of Wyoming Cowboys in the fifth annual Nova Home Loans Arizona Bowl, held at Tucson’s Arizona Stadium at 2:30 p.m. on New Year’s Day. The Panthers are led by third-year coach Shawn Elliott, who has a 16-20 record at the Atlanta-based university. Elliott’s team pulled off its first win over an SEC team this season, beating Tennessee in Knoxville on August 31, 38-30. The Panthers’ season hit a series of roadblocks from there, beating Football Championship Series team, Furman, 48-42, before falling to Western Michigan and Texas State in succession. The team’s season evened out from there, pulling off four-straight wins, over Arkansas State (52-38); Coastal Carolina (31-21); Army (28-21) and Troy (52-33), to move to 6-2. The team’s final quartet of contests saw the Panthers on the losing end thrice,

falling to Louisiana-Monroe (45-31); Appalachian State (56-27) and Georgia Southern (38-10), with their lone win in the stretch coming against South Alabama, who GSU beat, 28-15. Georgia State is led offensively by senior quarterback Dan Ellington, who finished the year with 1,291 passing yards and 21 touchdowns, with 625 yards and 5 scores on the ground. Fellow senior Tra Barnett was the team’s workhorse in the backfield, with the running back finishing the season with 1,389 rushing yards and 12 scores, while averaging 6 yards per carry. Sophomore receiver Cornelius McCoy was the lone Panther to finish with more than 500 receiving yards in 2019, as McCoy had 679 yards on 65 receptions, with four touchdowns to his name. The Panthers’ offense ranked 14th in the nation in rushing yards per game (245.2), while averaging 36.1 points per game in 12 contests. This is the third bowl game that GSU has taken part in, having beat Western Kentucky, 27-17 in the 2017 AutoNation Cure Bowl. The Panthers lost the same game, 27-16, against San Jose State University in their bowl game debut back in 2015. Georgia State is seeking to become the first Sun Belt team to win the Nova Home
Loans Arizona Bowl since New Mexico State did so in 2017. Teams from the Sun Belt have struggled in four contests in Tucson, with the conference’s representatives going 1-3 against Mountain West teams in the exhibition. Expect Ellington and Barnett to do everything in their power to snap that skid, against an eager Wyoming squad that’s fixing for a fight.

PlayStation Fiesta Bowl
6 p.m. Saturday, December 28 • State Farm Stadium, 1 Cardinals Drive, Glendale By Christopher Boan The sixth edition of the College Football Playoff hits the Valley of the Sun on Saturday, December 28, as two college football bluebloods meet at State Farm Stadium in Glendale. This year’s contest pits secondseeded Ohio State University of the Big Ten against third seed Clemson of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Both teams enter the College Football Playoff semifinal with 13-0 records to their names, in the 49th annual Fiesta Bowl contest. The Buckeyes have played in the Fiesta Bowl eight times, while Clemson previously played in the CFP semifinals at State Farm Stadium on New Year’s Eve in 2016, beating the Buckeyes, 31-0. The defending national champion Tigers feature an explosive offense that’s led by sophomore quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who finished the regular season with 3,172 yards and 34 touchdowns through the air in 13 starts. The Tigers’ offense averaged 547.7 yards per game as a collective this year, with junior back Travis Etienne anchoring the backfield for Dabo Swinney’s team, with 1,500 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns to his name this season. The Buckeyes’ offense is nothing to bat an eye at, however, with sophomore quarterback Justin Fields

throwing for 2,953 yards and 40 touchdowns to one interception this season. Fields, who transferred to Columbus from the University of Georgia, added 471 yards and 10 scores on the ground for coach Ryan Day, giving the Buckeyes a true dual threat quarterback. Day addressed the challenge of playing Swinney and the Tigers in his pregame comments, calling Clemson one of the best teams in the nation. The first-year OSU coach believes his team is playing its best ball right now, with the team looking forward to the trials and tribulations associated with the four-team postseason that college football utilizes. “Our team is excited about this challenge. We are excited to have an opportunity to play in the playoffs, and been working hard towards this goal,” Day says. “I thought we finished the season strong, especially the last three games. And we are looking forward to preparing for this game, getting out to Arizona.” Swinney, who has posted a 129-30 record with two national championships in 12 seasons with the Tigers, expects a battle royal come the 28th. “(We’re) super excited to come back out to Arizona. It’s a wonderful experience out there at the Fiesta Bowl. They just do a great job,” Swinney says. “And obviously it’s a
huge game for both teams, but it’s still been a great bowl-type experience out there in Arizona. And again, looking forward to coming out.” Clemson is 3-0 against the Buckeyes all-time, dating back to the 1978 season. The Tigers have posted a 24-20 record in bowl games and have been playing football for 118 seasons. The Buckeyes are 25-25 in bowl games and have played football for 108 years, dating back to 1904. Ohio State has eight claimed national titles in its rich football history, with their latest coming in 2014. The Tigers, meanwhile, have three claimed national titles, coming in 1981, as well as in 2016 and 2018. Clemson enters the Fiesta Bowl on a 28-game winning streak, which is the longest active streak in the 130-team Football Bowl Subdivision. The Buckeyes have won 19-straight games, representing the secondlongest streak in the FBS, speaking to the impact that Day and his predecessor, Urban Meyer have had on the Buckeyes program. Day spoke to the success of both teams in his pregame comments, calling the matchup one to remember for players, coaches and fans. “I think both teams played in big games. You don’t go to Ohio State or Clemson without playing in big games,” Day says. “That’s just kind of how it goes. So, I don’t think the stage will be too big for either side.”

Justin Fields
Ohio State Buckeyes By Christopher Boan The Ohio State Buckeyes have been historically excellent during their march to the 2019 College Football Playoff semifinals. The Buckeyes (13-0, 10-0), enter the 2019 Fiesta Bowl on a 22-game winning streak, beating all 13 of their opponents by double digits. Much of that success is thanks to the larger-than-life exploits of sophomore quarterback Justin Fields, who has thrived in his first season since transferring from the University of Georgia. Fields finished his first full season as a starter with 2,953 passing yards, to go with 471 rushing yards and 50 touchdowns. The sophomore finished with the fewest interceptions (1) of any Football Bowl Subdivision quarterback, while completing 67.5% of his passes. Fields’ steadfast leadership guided the Buckeyes to a year few donning the scarlet and silver will forget. The everlasting success that Fields and first-year coach Ryan Day experienced this year served a twofold purpose, according to Day. “We found ourselves in lopsided games where they didn’t really play much in the second half other than the Wisconsin game,” Day says. “And even then, we had our (backups) in there the last couple drives. So, as we got into those three

games at the end of the season, we found out what our team was made of.” Perhaps the greatest asset of Day’s first Buckeyes team is its defense, which finished third in the nation in points allowed (12.5) and second overall in yard per game allowed (247.6). When asked what makes this year’s team special, Day attributed much of it to the camaraderie that’s been built day by day since spring practice. “I think you’re talking about a team who has a lot of love for each other, a lot of great leadership, a lot of maturity, discipline,” Day says. “And it goes back to toughness and love. And those are the two things that we hang our hat on. And I think the chemistry and these guys pulling for each other in the end makes a difference, it makes us each special.” It’s that chemistry that’s shaped the Buckeyes roster this season, as the collective eyes its first national title since 2014. It’s the effort of defensive stars, like junior defensive end Chase Young, who leads the nation in sacks (16.5), that allows the Buckeyes to soar as a team, according to Day. Above all, Day is thrilled by how this team has approached each of their games this fall, showing a yeoman-like effort throughout the year. He’s excited to see what the Buckeyes can do on a late December
Saturday night in the Valley, looking to join an elite fraternity of national championship winning coaches in the process. Day wants to see how his players respond to playing the best competition in the country and whether they’ll answer the call against the Tigers on national television on December 28. “Our team is excited about this challenge. We are excited to have an opportunity to play in the playoffs, and been working hard toward this goal,” Day says. “I thought we finished the season strong, especially the last three games. And we are looking forward to preparing for this game, getting out to Arizona.”

Trevor Lawrence
Clemson Tigers By Christopher Boan The Clemson Tigers have set up shop in the Valley of late, making their second trip to Glendale’s State Farm Stadium since 2016. The defending champion Tigers have fond memories of that trip, as they shellacked the Ohio State Buckeyes, 31-0, en route to their first national title in 36 years. Fast forward 36 months, and Clemson once again finds itself a game away from playing in its fourthstraight College Football Playoff title game. Their opponent this go-round is the very same as their first trip in 2016, as they’ll play the third-seeded Buckeyes on Saturday, December 28. This year’s Clemson squad has been perhaps the most dominant to-date, beating all but one of their 13 opponents by double-digits. The Tigers, under 12th year coach Dabo Sweeney, are led offensively by sophomore gunslinger Trevor Lawrence and junior back Travis Etienne. The former finished with the fifthmost passing touchdowns (34) of any quarterback in the nation this season, while throwing for 3,172 yards. Etienne, meanwhile, finished in a
22

tie for the sixth-most rushing yards, with 1,500 in 13 starts, while ranking second-overall in yards per carry, at 8.2. Swinney has led the Tigers to a 129-30 record during his tenure, using a cocktail of endless energy and affable humility to win over recruits and fans alike. The Birmingham, Alabama, native thanked the Fiesta Bowl for hosting his team in his pregame comments. The key for Swinney is to keep his players focused on the task at hand, while also enjoying the perks that come from playing in front of a packed crowd in Glendale at the Fiesta Bowl. “It’s a blessing to be a part of it. We’re thankful,” Swinney says. “And just really looking forward to the whole experience out there.” The Tigers have faced an unexpected bit of adversity this year, as their 13 opponents had a combined record of 80-77 in 2019. That bit of bad luck likely cost the Tigers a shot at earning a top-two seed in the College Football Playoff, as top-seeded Louisiana State and second seed Ohio State passed Clemson in the final CFP standings. Swinney downplayed the importance of the team’s seeding,
however, saying the Tigers’ run of-late speaks volumes about their staying power in a sport where dominance is near impossible to come by. “We’ve got a track record over the last nine years that kind of speaks for itself,” Swinney says. “And I think our team, in particular, has shown up with great focus and preparation each week with great respect for every opponent and have found a way to win. So, you can only play the schedule that you got, and that’s what we’ve done.”
