Play dates with horses offer bevy of benefits BY ALISON STANTON

Jeannie Hatfield has been fascinated by horses since she was a little girl growing up in Kentucky. She has fond memories of her father calling her to join him each May to watch the Kentucky Derby on television, and sitting in awe and admiring the way the horses raced around the track. Over the years, Hatfield has continued to pursue her love for horses; she has taken numerous classes about equine science and other related topics and has worked as a horse massage therapist and horseback tour guide. Now, through her work as program director at Harmony Heart Ranch in Chandler, Hatfield is helping young children learn about and appreciate horses. For the past five summers, the ranch has offered a horse play date program for children ages 6 and older. The kids—usually with their parents in tow—arrive at the ranch early in the morning and spend 2 1/2 hours with Hatfield doing a variety of activities, including brushing the horses and “painting” them with a mixture of water and food coloring. “The first thing I do is go over the ranch rules, and give the kids an introduction to horsemanship,” Hatfield says, adding that this is her first summer running the popular program. “I teach them all about safety, and then we all grab brushes and start brushing.”

After spending an hour or so brushing and painting two senior horses who Hatfield says are extremely gentle and docile with the children, the group then experiences other aspects of life on a farm. This includes meeting the ranch’s two younger and livelier horses; visiting with the two resident cows— one of whom is named Miss Piggy—and gathering eggs from the 31 chickens who call the ranch home.

“I recently had eight Girl Scouts here and they were all crawling around having a great time and the horses were just looking at them like, ‘thank you so much for brushing us and loving us today,’” Hatfield says. To keep everyone cool, Hatfield enjoys spraying a hose up into the air. When the play date session is over, the kids are given a horse-related craft to take home.

“The kids just love it,” she says. Hatfield says she truly enjoys running the horse play date program. She especially loves teaching and showing children and their parents how kind, caring and empathetic the animals can be. “I am truly living my passion and doing what I love,” she says. While Hatfield is keeping a watchful eye on the children who are happily brushing and painting the horses, she knows she is doing more than giving them the opportunity to meet the animals up close. She is also providing children and their parents the chance to experience the therapeutic benefits that horses can provide. “Horses evoke so much emotion in us. They are such amazing animals, and they are so connected with us,” Hatfield says. “They can tell when we are upset about something, and they are so loving to us.” Hatfield recalls how a young boy who recently attended a horse play date with his parents and older siblings had a great time interacting with the horses and jumping in the mud. His parents confided in Hatfield that their son had been in therapy because he was afraid of gooey substances, and were amazed at how much fun he was having. “It’s much more than just a play date with horses,” she says. “I call it being SEE HORSE PAGE 26

‘therapized’ by horses.” Through her studies and work with horses over the years, Hatfield says she has learned how emotionally beneficial it can be to be around the animals. At-risk youth and other children with a variety of challenges tend to calm down and do extremely well when working with them, she says. “I have seen for myself how well horses take care of people,” she says. No matter what inspires the kids and parents to come to Harmony Heart Ranch for the horse play dates, Hatfield says everyone leaves feeling impacted “1,000%” by the time they spend there. “I am all about making the world a better place by being around horses,” she says. Harmony Heart Ranch is located at 758 W. Kingbird Dr. in Chandler. The horse play dates are 7:45 to 10:15 a.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and from 3:15 to 5:45 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. Children should wear clothing and shoes that are OK to get wet and muddy. The cost is $25 per child and $15 for additional children per family. Reservations are required, and birthday parties and private group parties are also available. For more information, call 602-234-0267 or email equinegirlaz@gmail.com. ‘Stuff the Bus’ with school supplies Fulton Homes is partnering with KEZ 99.9 for the Valley’s annual Fulton Homes “Stuff the Bus” campaign to ease the burden of buying new school clothes and supplies for some deserving families. This year’s donation drive runs through Aug. 4 at Chandler Fashion Center, 3111 W. Chandler Blvd., Chandler. Volunteers will be on hand each day of the campaign during mall hours to collect new school supplies, clothing and backpacks for children in need at ICAN– Positive Programs for Youth, in Chandler. A full-size school bus parked inside the Macy’s Court with painted handprints represents each child in need. The handprints contain a list of items each child requires for a successful school year.

Supporters can donate to a specific child or make a general contribution of requested items, such as pencils, pens, notebooks, backpacks, school uniforms or shoes. Shoppers can also return the handprint with school supplies to the mall’s guest services area located near Barnes & Noble. Donations will be accepted at all KEZ events and remotes as well. “Children need to get a good start in the first few days of each school year,” says Fulton Homes CEO Doug Fulton. “When you donate to ‘Stuff the Bus’ you make a positive difference in these children’s lives.” For more information visit kez999.com and search keywords “stuff the bus,” or go to fultonhomes.com and click on the “Fulton Foundation” link.

Chandler publisher gives children’s books perfect scores The 2013 Purple Dragonfly Book Awards awarded 17 entries with 80 out of 80 points— perfect scores—awarding them and two others first-place designations. “This year’s competition was the stiffest ever, with an unprecedented number of entries from all over the world, including England, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia, Israel, France, Canada, Dubai, the United States and others,” says Linda F. Radke, president of Five Star Publications Inc., the sponsor of the Dragonfly Book Awards. “We pride ourselves on using a point system, which is the fairest way to judge. If five entries in one category share the same first-place score, for example, we award all five of them first-place certificates rather than draw straws and penalize the other four entries. Plus, a minimum score of 72 out of 80 is required to be considered for a first-place award, 64 out of 80 for a second place and 56 out of 80 for an honorable mention—even if there is only one book entered in a category—when means the scores are truly reflective of the quality of books that win.” Also part of the Five Star Dragonfly Book Awards family of contests is the Royal Dragonfly Book awards, which honors all genres of books in 52 categories including a new Youth Author category for published writers ages 17 and younger. The deadline to enter is Oct. 1, however Royal Dragonfly submissions postmarked Aug. 1 or earlier are eligible for the Early Bird reward: a free e-copy of “The Economical Guide to Self-Publishing” or

Kids: Win $15 gift card from Changing Hands Bookstore Students who either live in Chandler, Gilbert, Queen Creek or surrounding areas or who attend area schools can win $15 gift cards from Changing Hands Bookstore, thanks to a partnership between the bookseller and the SanTan Sun News. This ongoing, monthly promotion awards a $15 Changing Hands gift card to every youth whose article, story, poem, essay, editorial, book review, photo or illustration is chosen to be printed in the SanTan Sun Kids Opportunity section, while supplies last. The Kids Opportunity section is printed in the Youth Section of the first paper of the month, each month. The best news is that even though only one to three submissions are printed per month, all good submissions are held in a file to be printed in future issues. So if an entry doesn’t win this month, it could win next month -- or even the month after that. To enter, visit SanTanSun.com, click on Youth and then on Student Writer Permission Slip to download a submissionpermission slip. Complete the form and have a parent sign it so the paper has permission to print the entry and the author or artist’s byline. Then, email the submission-permission slip and writing or artwork to news@SanTanSun.com as a Word file, if writing, or JPEG, if art, or pasted into the email.
