Donaldson Watches & Repair offers in-house service BY ALISON STANTON

Christine and Dave Donaldson, co-owners of Donaldson Watches & Repair, have always had a vision to operate their own retail watch boutique and service center. Dave got his start working on watches when he was in the sixth grade, and was taught by a family friend who trained in Switzerland as a watchmaker. The couple, who worked on a wholesale level for Bailey, Banks & Biddle for some time before the stores closed, got the chance to achieve their dream when they opened their first retail service center in Tempe in December 2009, and their second location in Gilbert this July. “We are an in-house watch repair service center performing many small repairs like battery changes, band sizings and replacing broken crystals to the movement exchanges and the full servicing on complicated mechanical watch movements,” Christine says, adding that her husband Dave has been a certified watchmaker and horologist for more than 20 years. “We work on all brands from Omega, Tag Heuer, Rolex, Breitling, Tissot, and Swiss watches to the fashion brands like Seiko, Citizen, Fossil and many more with everything in between.” As one of the few in-house service centers in the East Valley, Christine

PRECISE AND PROFESSIONAL: Donaldson Watches & Repair is one of the few in-house watch service centers in the East Valley, says co-owner Christine Donaldson. Repairs are done right on the premises, and customers can meet the people who will be working on their time pieces. Submitted photo

says Donaldson Watches & Repair gives customers the opportunity to meet and deal directly with the people who are repairing their watches. She and her husband strive every day to live their company’s motto, which is “Time is precious...we won’t let you lose a second.” “We are not a jewelry store and most jewelry stores have to send out watches for repair—if they even offer that service any longer,” she says, adding that their customers never have to work with a middle man or wait months for their items to be returned. This personalized approach is definitely working, Christine says. It is not unusual for customers to drive from Tucson, the West Valley and neighboring mountain towns to have

their watches repaired. During the past two decades, Christine says she and Dave have noticed some definite changes in the watch repair industry. Thanks to technological advances, she says things that were only once a dream are now being accomplished with complicated movements like “minute repeaters, tourbillon escapements, GPS timepieces, blue-tooth technology and many more.” “The size of the watches these days have gotten much larger and are viewed as a status piece for most men,” she says, adding that the biggest change she and Dave have witnessed in the industry was the major comeback of the mechanical timepiece in the early 1990s after the quartz revolution

in the 1970s. “These types of movements are like a car with moving parts and synthetic oils that need to be routinely serviced to maintain the integrity of the watch to be able to pass the timepiece down to the next generation.” No matter what type of watch they are repairing or restoring, Christine says she and Dave especially enjoy how intricate their work can be, as well as helping to educate their customers. “Very few people can say they work with tolerances of 100th of a millimeter,” she says. “We love sharing our passion and knowledge of fine timepieces with our customers. It is important to us for a customer to understand what it is they are purchasing and what to expect with their purchase or repair, as well as explaining in detail how the watch repair service in the future will maintain the integrity of their timepiece.” Donaldson Watches & Repair is located at 1840 E. Warner Rd., Suite 118, in Tempe, and at 1464 E. Williams Field Rd., Suite 103, in Gilbert. For more information, call 480-9637566 or 480-855-0839, or visit donaldsonwatchrepair.com. Immerse preschoolers in Spanish at Carebear Preschool Full immersion Spanish classes are being offered at Carebear Preschool starting this fall, under the direction of Ana Lay, a local teacher with years of experience and a love of foreign languages. The students will begin the year with instruction in English and Spanish, and as they progress and become more proficient in the second language, classes will gradually shift to 100% Spanish instruction at Lay’s discretion. The half-day classes, open to students ages 3 and older, will follow the same curriculum as Carebear, including math, science, computers and other subjects, but with the key difference that instruction will be given primarily in Spanish. “The benefits of learning a second language from such a young age have been widely proven and in today’s world it is more important than ever to give children this advantage as early as possible,” Lay says. Lay brings her expertise back to Carebear Preschool after years of experience teaching in her native

Costa Rica, the United States, and most recently, at the Dalian American International School in China. She has taught children from all over the world using both English and Spanish as the language of instruction with great success. Studying a foreign language not only supports brain development, but it has also been linked to higher test scores, greater confidence, and more advanced reading and language skills in the child’s own language as well; not to mention an expanded view of the world and greater opportunities for the child’s future. Studies show that when children are exposed to a foreign language at such an early age, the information is stored in the same part of the brain as their native tongue and they are more likely to be completely fluent later in life.
