odles of people, joined by a coalition of religious organizations, gathered at a nonviolent protest in front of the wedding cake-like architecture of Pasadena City Hall. We were there protesting the murder of George Floyd and many others. It was the end of May, there was beautiful spring weather, and I was standing front and almost center. I remember wondering, “is my face being scanned by someone?” Probably. I had friends who didn’t want to attend because of that very reason. I would not let anything prevent me from being in the socially distant and masked crowd of thousands—people of all colors, ages and sizes. I exulted in the excitement; the fierce calls for justice; the wafting odors of shampoo and aftershave; some people’s dogs decked out with protest harnesses. We were chanting, singing, being together. There was nothing obvious to fear from the crowd. Surveillance? That’s not so obvious, a frightening factor that goes beyond protests. Which brings me to the striking new documentary film “Coded Bias.” We go about our daily lives on a spectrum of trust regarding our computers and smartphones and the tech that powers them. One end of the spectrum is unconscious of it, the other end is paranoia. As with many things, many of us are in the middle. Enter “Coded Bias,” which has already made a big splash and put the Silicon Valley Google-Facebook hegemony and its white male bias under a veritable social microscope. The film could be called “Coded by Us,” the “us” in this instance being predominantly cis white men of privilege. Up to now, it was a given that artificial intelligence reflects so-called “natural” intelligence. This film reveals so brilliantly the hidden side of AI and its algorithms: mirroring its creators’ bias and bigotry. And how that flawed tech is being used to negatively impact lives worldwide. Directed by Shalini Kantayya, “Coded Bias,” was a hit at Sundance. It features the ebullient and whip-smart Joy Buolamwini, who as a child dreamed of one day joining MIT’s legendary Media Lab. Joy had seen a whimsical robot the lab had created, and realized that was the life for her, then made it happen. Ms. Buolamwini is the Queen of Tech Nerds who is so kinetic on-screen. I wanted to stay with her for hours. One aspect of the film is tracing Joy’s journey from Media Lab computer scientist to becoming a digital activist via her nonprofit, the Algorithmic Justice League. It started innocently enough when Joy decided to create a fun art project: a mirror that would recognize her face. What she found was that her dark skin rendered her, wait for it… invisible. Then she tried looking into the
camera while wearing a white mask and voilá! The more she dug, the more she found that AI and its attending facial recognition algorithms (another word for “rules”) reliably only recognized white male faces. The metaphor of “being invisible” as a woman of color couldn’t be more apt. You can’t make this up, right? You may wonder, “who cares about algorithms?” These days, companies use them to hire and fire; universities to sort through admissions; law enforcement to assess threats. In “Coded Bias,” you see first-hand the hiring process using these algorithms that automatically rejects anyone who is not white and male. Seriously. In a particularly upsetting scene, a young Black man on London’s streets is detained because a facial recognition surveillance “bot” thinks he looks like a suspect. He is only 14 years old and is visibly shaken by the plain-clothes cops who yank him off the sidewalk. They grill and fingerprint him, regarding him as a criminal. In other words, the AI-based system treated him just like a bigot would in real life. Silicon Valley tech nerds are notoriously sexist and racist and don’t have much interest in transforming their cultures as it works for them. In fact, one of the film’s “talking heads” is a recently fired woman of color who worked at Google. A highly regarded researcher, Timnit Gebru was sacked after criticizing Google’s approach to minority hiring and the biases built into today’s artificial intelligence systems. Ironically, Ms. Gebru was a co-leader of Google’s Ethical AI team! That would be like firing a house inspector for reporting a termite infestation. On a positive note, some major companies have hired Ms. Buolamwini and her team to help them delete their mechanized chauvinism. The film’s theme resonated with me, as I have been trained to see bias after years of studying media and its hidden coding—the subtle messages that become obvious once you break the code. Here’s a classic example: the most recent Costco Connection magazine cover features an altruistic, tall white man standing next to an indigenous woman. He is named, she remains nameless. Do we really want to allow the unfettered and non-consensual capturing of our faces for commercial and law enforcement profiles? This column is too short to dive that deep. That is why you really must see “Coded Bias.” n Ellen Snortland has written “Consider This…” for a heckuva long time, and she also coaches first-time book authors! PROTECTING ACCESS TO CARE ATTORNEY GENERAL OKS HOSPITAL AFFILIATION AGREEMENT BY CHRISTINA FUOCO-KARASINSKI
C
alifornia Attorney General Xavier Becerra conditionally approved the affiliation of Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena with Los Angeles-based Cedars-Sinai Health System on December 10. Under California law, any transaction involving the sale or transfer of control of a nonprofit hospital must secure the attorney general’s approval. According to the statute, the attorney general determines whether the transaction may impact the accessibility and availability of health care services, including to substantially lessen competition or create a monopoly. The attorney general’s conditional consent seeks to protect
access to care for the Los Angeles communities served by these hospitals. “Not-for-profit hospitals receive significant tax breaks and legal concessions from California taxpayers to operate their facilities because these hospitals commit to a mission of serving in the public’s interest,” Becerra said. “It’s our job at the California Department of Justice to oversee that not-for-profits fulfill their mission to Californians. We have provided conditional approval to Cedars-Sinai Health System and Huntington Memorial Hospital, two major not-for-profit hospitals in Los Angeles

As the nation tops 300,000 deaths, Sandra Lindsay, a nurse at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center became the first American to be vaccinated. The Food and Drug Administration approved the emergency use authorization of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine last Friday marking what many experts claim is ‘the beginning of the end of the pandemic’. The first in line to receive the vaccine are frontline healthcare workers. According to Gov. Gavin Newsom, the first person to receive the vaccine in the state was Helen Cordova, an ICU nurse at Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center. The vaccine comes at a pivotal point in the fight against COVID-19 as Southern California cases continue to surge. “Hope is here,” said Newsom. “As our first doses of vaccine arrive, the promise of ending the pandemic is on the horizon.”
• The novel coronavirus has brought Southern California to its knees with ICU capacity plummeting. Los Angeles County has only 100 ICU beds left for 10 million people. Currently, LA County has 4,203 people hospitalized with officials predicting the number could rise to 5,000 by the weekend. According to the Los Angles Times, there were 935 people occupying the ICU beds in LA County more than quadruple the number from Nov. 1. The rest of the region has faired poorly with Ventura County sitting at 1% capacity and Riverside County in worse shape with 0%. Pasadena’s Huntington Hospital is having the same trouble with 22 of their 30 ICU beds occupied. According to Pasadena Now, the hospital could treat an additional 80-86 ICU patients if the hospital was not facing a staff shortage. “We are managing but just barely,” said Dr. Kimberly Shriner an infectious disease expert at Huntington Hospital. • Pasadena’s drop in new cases may be a result of a glitch in the state data deporting system. According to city spokesperson Lisa Derderian, a change in the state-run system may have caused the artificially low numbers of new cases. The system is expected to recover on Tuesday accounting for the disparity. In total, Huntington Hospital reported 120 patients being treated for COVID-19 with 22 of its 30 available ICU beds occupied. — Information Complied by Matthew Rodriguez

County, to consolidate while they maintain their mission of service to the public. “As our hospital systems get bigger by affiliating with one another, it is critical that they continue to provide quality services at affordable prices to the families that count on them in times of crisis. The conditions we have attached to the proposed affiliation of Huntington with Cedars-Sinai serve to keep our healthcare market competitive and ensure that this affiliation will be a benefit to the people and taxpayers of greater Los Angeles who depend on the critical services at these hospitals.” The attorney general’s conditions are based on experts’ in-depth analysis of the health and medical needs of the communities that surround and utilize the subject hospitals. Among other things, these conditions call for CedarsSinai and Huntington to: Maintain competition. To ensure a competitive market and accessible health care, and to prevent the risk of price hikes, Cedars-Sinai and Huntington must abide by the following: • Separate negotiating teams and firewall: Requires Huntington to engage in separate insurer negotiations from Cedars-Sinai, with a firewall between negotiating teams. • Price limitations: Huntington is required to cap its annual growth of reimbursement charges across all of its services. This is to ensure that Huntington’s prices are not arbitrarily raised as a result of its affiliation with Cedars-Sinai. The price cap will be tied to the U.S. Hospital Index Price. • Arbitration: Allows payors to the Huntington Hospital system to seek arbitration of any rates or terms of either their contract with Huntington Hospital or their contract with Cedars-Sinai to determine what would be fair rates or terms in those contracts but for the affiliation of CedarsSinai with Huntington to ensure that the affiliation between the two hospital systems does not result in higher prices that are not tied to quality or cost. • Maintain operations and services at the hospital: For 10 years from the date of the closing date of the affiliation agreement, Huntington shall be operated and maintained as a licensed general acute care hospital and maintain 24-hour emergency and trauma medical services— maintaining services for 10 years in pediatric care, trauma centers, oncology and neonatal intensive care units, among others. • Provide charity care and community benefits: For five years from the closing date of the affiliation agreement, Huntington must provide an annual minimum amount of $4,924,930 in free care to individuals who are uninsured, as well as take additional steps to ensure that patients are aware of this free care, including trainings for staff and annual meetings with community organizations to ensure awareness. Huntington must also provide an annual amount of $30,351,088 in community benefits such as community outreach services, education for nurses and nursing student programs, Huntington Ambulatory Care Center, and Huntington Health eConnect, among others. • Maintain Medical Staff: Cedars-Sinai shall maintain privileges for current medical staff at Huntington who are in good standing as of the closing date of the affiliation agreement. • Maintain Safety in Hospitals: Huntington shall commit necessary investments required to meet and maintain seismic compliance requirements at Huntington Memorial Hospital. n
CASTLE GREEN VIRTUAL TOUR IS A STEP INTO HISTORY BY CHRISTINA FUOCO-KARASINSKI

T
he historic Castle Green is known for its annual tours, but this year, because of COVID-19, the event was forced to go virtual. The 90-minute Castle Green virtual tour, which is set for 1 p.m. Sunday, December 20, features the intricacies of the venue, built by architect Frederick I. Roehrig, with influence of Moorish, Spanish and Victorian elements. Viewers will see the ground floor, private condominiums, the rooftop and the “iconic” bridge. “Some of the units upstairs will show off ways people are using the space,” said Dior Chase, director of events. Some have their units more modern, others keep it more in line with the time period when we were built. There’s a really eclectic group of owners.” The castle has become one of the most cherished historic buildings in Pasadena. Built in 1898, Castle Green was the second of three buildings erected for the wealthy who loved vacationing in sunny California. Castle Green was then known as the central annex. “The train station was right next to the main hotel, the Hotel Green,” she said. “People would come here from back east and stay for the winter season. Our building was built and designed for those guests staying for an extended period of time, which is why we still have half a bridge. It was used to connect the two buildings.” The Hotel Green went out of business in the ’20s, she said. Several guests purchased the building in the 1920s. The ground floor is used for events like weddings, and the floors above are privately owned condos. Movies are filmed on the main floor as well.
“The interior of our ground floor is almost like it was 120 years ago, which is super cool,” Chase said. “No expense was spared. It was a luxury home away from home for the wealthy folks back east. The tour, which is usually the first Sunday of December, is an open house. It’s self-guided and people come and go through the ground floor. “Half of our units upstairs are open to the public. Now with COVID, who wants 1,000 people coming through their home? We had to cancel that. A group of our residents pulled together and are skilled to do virtual tours. They’re filming right now.” Like many venues, restaurants and small businesses, Castle Green’s staff has had zero income since March, according to Chase. “But we are really fortunate,” she added. “We’ve been here 120 years. We’ll be here for 120 more. We just have to get through this.” Chase is going to watch it herself—with a glass of wine and snacks. “You can’t come here to visit with us, so we’re going to come to you,” she said. “It’s going to be more intimate. Someone will be talking to you about the tour, their unit, how it is to live here, etc. If you’re into the architecture and history of Pasadena, this is a good opportunity for you.”n

• DINING • Shiro:
Sherrill Bailey and Irene Yokoi, owners of Shiro.
CONSISTENT QUALITY CONTINUES STORY BY FRIER MCCOLLISTER | PHOTO BY LUIS CHAVEZ
C
hef Hideo “Shiro” Yamashiro is happily retired, reports Sherrill Bailey, the general manager and co-owner of the iconic South Pasadena restaurant Shiro about his whereabouts. “He helps us water the plants and sometimes borrows the kitchen,” Bailey added. Yamashiro, 74, is the iconic mastermind behind the venerable local fixture that remains his namesake. Originally from Okinawa, Yamashiro worked with Wolfgang Puck at Ma Maison and began developing his own unique fusion of Japanese and French influences. That provided the initial menu inspirations for this South Pasadena fine-dining institution. About 33 years after he opened the place in 1987 in the small storefront on Mission Street just west of Fair Oaks, the restaurant carefully maintains the high standards and many of the beloved menu creations that Yamashiro established. They have had some practice. Shiro actually left the restaurant to pursue other ventures in 2004. Loyalty and trust seem to be the themes here. Yamashiro’s living legacy has continued thanks to Bailey, who started at the restaurant as a server in 1991, and her co-owner and partner Irene Yokoi. Yokoi is Yamashiro’s cousin from Tokyo, who joined the operation to help out front of house in 2001. The two women describe each other as “best friends” and they seem to trade on an easy shorthand between themselves in conversation. The rapport is evident. But who’s in the kitchen? That would be Chef Luis Alfonso Ortega Banuelos, otherwise known simply as “Mota,” who started at the restaurant over 20 years ago at the age of 16, as a dishwasher. Banuelos quickly became Yamashiro’s sole protégé and he executes the master’s dishes flawlessly, while routinely concocting delectable inventions of his own creation for the menu. “He’s acquired this wonderful palate through Shiro and it’s carried us forward through these years,” Bailey said. Yet despite the combined years of experience between the partners, nothing prepared them for the pandemic lockdown in March. “We were scurrying because we didn’t know if everybody was going to close,” Bailey recalled. “On our first Wednesday (following the March lockdown order), we flipped that day. We started doing takeout that night. And we were really fortunate because a lot of our loyal clientele had heard, and they just started to call us. We’ve learned a lot.” When outdoor dining was allowed, Bailey requested help from the city of South Pasadena in July, with the K-Rail street barricades outside the restaurant. They arrived in the first week of September. The outdoor dining lane accommodated 13 tables and sat about 35 to 40 diners. “It was working pretty well, especially on the weekends,” noted Bailey almost wistfully. “It’s rough, no doubt about it. It’s a struggle. We are really fortunate because we have had such a loyal clientele. It’s just amazing how the community has stood up for us and supported us and want to keep us here. So, we’re really blessed and grateful.” “And (we have) a very wonderful landlord,” Yokoi added. “But our disadvantage, compared to casual restaurants or takeout restaurants (is) we just can’t do the volume. Even though we do have a loyal following, it does have a limit. Sustaining the cash flow is very difficult.” Before the pandemic, the restaurant carried a rotating staff of 18, with five in the kitchen. Front-of-house staff was reduced to five for outdoor service and is now down to two, in assisting with the takeout operation. The restaurant is known for its seafood preparations and Banuelos, like his mentor, visits the wholesale fish market daily to source fresh selections for the evening’s menu. That said, should the charbroiled ribeye or prime filet appear on the nightly menu, know that they are sourced from locally renowned wholesale butcher, Alexander Prime Meats, and are dry-aged in-house for a minimum of three weeks. Freshness, care and attention inform the food here and so it has been for decades.

The takeout menu at Shiro changes daily and is posted on its website by 3:00 p.m. A rotating three-course $50 per-person menu is also available daily. That said, enthusiasts who are looking for the “usual suspects” from the original menu won’t be disappointed. The whole sizzling catfish with housemade ponzu sauce and chopped cilantro ($37) is a house specialty and arguably the signature dish. The wonton ravioli stuffed with shrimp mousse bathed in shiitake mushroom cream ($13) is another reliable stalwart of the daily menu and a Yamashiro original. Banuelos’ popular innovations that can be found on the menu rotation include crispy salmon tartare tacos served with cucumber, avocado and mustard aioli ($15.50) or his truffle ravioli with duxelle mushrooms in a black truffle cream sauce ($27). Recently, the $50 per person prix fixe menu included a choice of asparagus salad with toasted hazelnuts and tomato tarragon dressing or butternut squash soup with a dollop of heavy cream; charbroiled New Zealand snapper or lamb chops, the former served with tomato basil sauce and the latter with mint and garlic au jus; and for dessert, an apple tart with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce. By the way, the restaurant has been slowly selling off the contents of its wine cellar. With prices running from $15 to $40, these are bargains to consider with your order. Not surprisingly for a venue of its caliber, sophistication and taste, Christmas and New Year’s Eve have always been traditionally popular dates on the Shiro calendar. Though it seems doubtful that outdoor dining will recommence for the holidays, be on the lookout for crafted holiday specials coming soon. “Thank you for the continuing support,” Bailey said about the community. n

F
or the Emmy Award-winning star of a holiday tradition, Sierra Madre resident Suzanna Guzmán has found 2020 to be a year of transformations. Fans can still see her in the city of Los Angeles’ largest theatrical holiday production—the Latino Theater Company’s annual production of “La Virgen de Guadalupe, Dios Inantzin.” An archival version is available to stream for free through December 20. The mezzo soprano—who has appeared as a principal soloist at the Metropolitan and Washington National operas as well as the Los Angeles and San Diego operas—originated the titular role. Directed by José Luis Valenzuela and produced by the Latino Theater Company in association with the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, “La Virgen” has been performed annually since 2002, featuring more than 100 actors, singers and indigenous Aztec dancers as well as community children and seniors. This year would have been her 18th year as La Virgen. “It has been absolutely the joy of my life. The cherished role for the village is the role of the angel at the Virgin’s feet. I have witnessed angels going to college now,” Guzmán said. Some locals have made attendance part of their holiday tradition, coming every year. “La Virgen” is based on the mid-16th century text of “The Nican Mopohua,” the first and oldest source on Guadalupe. Our Lady of Guadalupe is the Catholic title for the Virgin Mary and, according to The Nican Mopohua, she appeared four times before a poor Nahua man, Juan Diego, and directed him to build a shrine that is known as the Nican Mopohua in the mountains of Tepeyac near Mexico City in 1531.
Evelina Fernández (“East Los High”) adapted the story for a stage production. Valenzuela and Fernández are among the founding members of the Latino Theater Company. Speaking from her home in Sierra Madre via FaceTime, Guzmán recalled, “When we first started it was like cooking dinner without a recipe from your memory.” Ten days before rehearsals started, Valenzuela dropped a verbal bomb. “He told me my first monologue was in Nahuatl, Aztec.” She penned her lines phonetically. “I had no idea what I was saying,” she said. “It was horrifying, plus I didn’t have the Spanish script. Spanish is not my first language; English is my first language.” Valenzuela told her she could put the words in her hands because she was so far from the audience. “In dress rehearsal, it worked like a charm,” she said. For the performance, the battery on the spotlight died. “It got dimmer and dimmer and then blackout,” she said. “I got three sentences out before it was pitch black on me.” There was the defective microphone during her second appearance. “I start to sing, and my microphone battery gives out. The sound guy comes running down with a handheld singing-at-the-Ritz nightclub microphone.” That was the excitement of live performances. The pandemic restrictions caught her at the end of an Opera Santa Barbara production of “Il Postino.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 10

“We kept hearing, ‘They’re going to shut it down. They’re going to shut it down. They’re going to shut it down.’ We were so lucky. March 8 was our final performance,” she said. Not so lucky was the opera program at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts (LACHSA) where Guzmán serves as the co-opera director. “Our spring production was supposed to be ‘West Side Story’ and we had a partner program we were doing called ‘Star-Crossed Lovers,’” she said. The program included references to people as disparate as French composer Charles Gounod (“Roméo et Juliette”), Spanish playwright Federico García Lorca (“Blood Wedding”), American composer Leonard Bernstein (“West Side Story”) and British singer Des’ree (“Kissing You” from Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 “Romeo + Juliet”) and would have touched on teenage mental health and teenage suicide. “We had our final room run and the principal said over the speaker, “his is our last day of in-person classes. We are going to shutdown, and everyone needs to go home.” While Guzmán was optimistic, her students were upset. “There were tears galore,” because, she explained, “the seniors all knew it meant: no prom, no graduation, no final performance.” And the uncertainty continued. “Little by little, my contracts started postponing. I have a contract for April 2020. I’m doing the Mother Abbess in ‘The Sound of Music’ with La Mirada Civic Light Opera.” She got notices that explained, “We are not gone; we are coming back July.” That then became September. “Just a month ago, we got a notice that said, ‘Do not despair. Things are looking really good for our one-year anniversary of waiting.’ All of her summer work traveling to festival and either performing or giving master classes were canceled. Then Saul Levine decided to reopen K-Mozart (105.1 KKGOHD4 Los Angeles and digitally) and he asked Guzmán is she wanted to bring back her show, “The Best in Opera.” Guzmán and Nick Tyler (“The Arts Reports”) now share what is happening in the local arts community. More difficult is finding a way for her LACHSA students to perform. She’s tried to devise ways for her kids to perform after being certified as a CO-
VID-19 compliance officer. A snow globe concept was way over the school’s budget. Another idea using plexiglass boxes was also nixed. She did find a studio outdoor amphitheater and their performance will be part of the PBS holiday celebration on December 24. which she will host with Brian White. “One song that we did, ended up being our fall production and it took all of our fall production budget.” Still, Guzmán has noticed some creative ways others have addressed the pandemic. Esa-Pekka Salonen and Minna Lindgren (libretto) developed a comedic adaptation of Mozart’s “Cosi fan Tutte” as “COVID fan Tutte.” The Michigan Opera Theatre performed Wagner’s “Twilight Gods” in a multilevel parking lot using technology to combine the voices of the singers and the music of the orchestra so that it reached the audience members in their cars via an FM radio station. Her recent Emmy Award was one of the positive things to come out of “such a surreal year.” Guzman has won many competitions for opera, but opera singers don’t generally win Tonys, Emmys or Academy Awards.” At first, she thought she might only be receiving a certificate and she even missed the announcement for the Live Special Events-Programming for the Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards in June. There, after all, was no swirl of events and hustle to get red carpet ready. When she got her statue, she had no one to show it off to and got in her car. “I went to my 99-year-old Aunt Martha who lives in Alhambra,” she said. For a while, she was even taking it with her and leaving it in her car when she went for groceries. “I look at this entire period as the phoenix period,” because the holidays will be less stressful, and she can find “such a joy to reconnect with my intimate family” while zooming in for others. Her wish is we continue trying to be responsible and safe. n

Broadway singer Lisa Vroman performs in the “Home for the Holidays” concert with the Pasadena Symphony. This year’s concert is livestreamed for free because audiences cannot gather for the annual favorite candlelight concert.
KEEPING TRADITIONS ALIVE PASADENA SYMPHONY BRINGS THE HOLIDAYS HOME FOR ITS LISTENERS BY BRIDGETTE M. REDMAN
T
he wistful, nostalgic phrase of “home for the holidays” has taken on an all-new meaning in 2020, as everyone is staying home rather than traveling to see family. The Pasadena Symphony is taking that phrase a step further by beaming one of its most beloved holiday traditions into people’s homes for free this holiday season. “Our annual holiday candlelight concert is the most sought-after holiday tradition in the community,” said Pasadena Symphony CEO Lora Unger. “We have sold out this concert since its inception in 2013 and it is so popular. We do two in a day. It is a community treasure.” They presented several concerts digitally last fall and Unger said they couldn’t imagine cutting this concert from their slate. So, they reimagined it, keeping all the well-loved elements and calling it “Home for the Holidays.” It will include, as always, the orchestra, a handbell ensemble and soloist, the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus, the Donald Brinegar Singers and well-known vocalist Lisa Vroman. The concert will be available for free on the symphony’s YouTube channel and its website for 48 hours starting 4 p.m. Saturday, December 19. “We really take on this beautiful journey that flows for a good 75 minutes,” Unger said. “It crosses different genres of popular music and holiday carols. It has something for everyone. The pace and dynamics of the concert is something that inspires everyone this year. We decided this year to make it free for the entire community given the hardship everyone is going through right now with the COVID stay-at-home orders.”

Concert is the same, but different Concert organizers are including all the elements people have come to expect. But music director David Lockington said the experience will be different. Everyone will have a front-row seat and will have the opportunity to get a closer look. “The camera will provide a look inside the process of making music, which is a much more intimate one,” Lockington said. “The camera reflects the drama of the music and ends up being another player in the creative process. We go through everything twice and we may edit a little bit, but we edit as little as possible.” The candlelight concert is known for its processional, which Unger called an acrobatic feat. The bell choir danced in the aisle while performing and the audience went on a journey during the concert. “A priority for me was to maintain, as much as we can, the integrity of what we would normally be doing with our candlelight concert,” Unger said. “The groups we always bring together to make the magic happen, we are bringing together. Lisa Vroman is a superstar Broadway singer who happens to be local. She is a favorite of the Pasadena Symphony audiences and is known as one of the finest voices of Broadway.” Capturing the music safely The vocalists will not perform live. The singers will create their sound files and send them to the production director, who will merge the files into a honeycombed screen. Audiences will see a digitally remastered performance of the choruses. The handbell choirs are also being shot separately. The live elements are the orchestra—which will perform masked and physically distanced, without any wind players—with Vroman as the vocalist. “We have some really great surprises with some intimate holiday movements with Linda (Krantz, solo handbell artist) and David on cello and with the bells,” Unger said. “You’ll see David on your screen as a solo cellist and then the camera will contract, showing 70 singers on stage with the ensemble slowly growing. It will be a very dynamic concert.” The use of the camera—and even the masks—are something that Lockington calls CONTINUED ON PAGE 12

fascinating. He feels it creates a closer bond between the listener at their computer and the music that is separate from the live experience. Lockington said masks help with the musicians’ self-consciousness. “There is sort of an ego element that is taken away,” Lockington said. “I quite like that, actually. It is a leveler. Everyone looks the same. You can’t project anything with your face, you can’t project how you are feeling about the music. You’re not communicating with your body as you are when you play for a live audience. What you’re doing is communicating just through the music and that is a very beautiful thing.” Concert features Lockington on cello One special moment in this year’s concert will involve Lockington performing on cello a melody he wrote for his granddaughter, Violet, just after she was born a few years ago. Unger said audiences will want to cry, smile and dance simultaneously. Lockington will play it as a solo piece on the cello and then it will blossom into 70 singers singing “Silent Night.” “The melody has a lovely, quietly joyful feel about it and I suddenly thought it sort of sounds like Christmas music—it was about the birth of a baby and I thought it could work for Christmas,” Lockington said. “I did the usual little trick of flecking it with recognizable bits of Christmas carols, so ‘O, Come All Ye Faithful’ is in there, ‘Silent Night’ is in there. It will have a seasonal feel to it because of handbells, cello and piano.” Other highlights include the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus singing John Lennon’s “Imagine,” pieces from the “Nutcracker Suite,” and Vroman belting “Ave Maria.” Bringing holiday joy to Pasadena and beyond “The thing I’m most excited about is continuing the tradition of what we do for the holiday candlelight concert,” Unger said. “We are aiming to have people at home feel and experience this concert even remotely the way that they would sitting in their concert hall seats. It is our calling, our gift to the community. We’re not charging admission. Only about 2,000 people a year get to see this, and we are giving the world the opportunity to see it.” While the concert is free, the symphony will take donations as it relies on the support and generosity of their patrons, especially during this time. Unger hopes people will make a special occasion out of this concert, even though they are watching from home. “I want people to feel inclined to dress up, have dinner, to make it a special event happening in their home,” Unger said. “I think audiences need to feel there is a special event that they are attending to get through the monotony of this temporary, difficult situation we’re in. We’re all craving to feel that there is a special event we can attend. I want people to not feel isolated, to feel connected to their community in a way that is hard to feel connected to.” It is important, she said, to remember the holidays are not canceled this year. People are just celebrating differently and in their homes. It’s something the symphony wants to help make special. “If we can bring joy, that is our mission as a nonprofit and an orchestra and an arts institution,” Unger said. “We want to bring joyous experiences that inspire and make you feel good and bring you warmth and comfort.” n

You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property.
