A
ll Saints Episcopal in Pasadena felt like home in the 1990s. Something happened to me there that I never forgot. It’s Christmas Eve, and I am a guest at the midnight service. The majesty of the campus is serene. The splendor inside is uplifting without being intimidating. The inclusive message of a revolutionary Jesus inspires me. Candles flicker, the scent of beeswax mixed with pine boughs. I am gobsmacked by the majesty of live music. As a mostly agnostic person during my adult life, I found that my spiritual longing is sated by singing in a choir. Almost 20 years later, that is what brought me back to ASC. I, along with my husband Ken, sing in the ASC Coventry Choir since November 2019. Of course, things are different now: virtual choir singing is weird, as has been almost everything in 2020. I also appreciate ASC’s stance on social justice and gender, as exemplified by the work of the Rev. Dr. Wil Gafney. Intensely intellectual and glowing with genius, I listened to Dr. Gafney as she spoke at the ASC Rector’s Forum via Zoom, then guestpreached at the regular service on November 30. The occasion was ASC being the first church in America to use her “Women’s Lectionary,” starting that day. The Women’s Lectionary is readings for an entire liturgical year that centers on the girls and women in Judeo-Christian scripture—the ones up to now who have been muted, sidelined and ignored. I get chills thinking how invisible I have almost always felt in structured religion and feel immense gratitude for this project. “Unmute yourself” is now part of our lexicon. Many of us feminists and womanists have been passionate about unmuting the mostly hidden women of history. The women of the past may be seen but rarely heard. They rarely have been told to unmute! There are histories we don’t even think about because, as the saying goes, “History is written by the victors.” Here’s a prime example. How many of us know there were Underground Railway “codes” for those escaping enslavement in the South sewn onto quilts? This method was ingenious because bounty hunters would never even consider that a quilt—a practical item made by insignificant women’s hands—could be used to fool them. Dr. Gafney is adept at revealing what’s missing from mainstream religious texts and astute at explaining why an all-woman “cast” of Bible lessons and sermon subjects is vital. Many congregations, including ASC, have already stopped referring to God exclusively as He/Father. Many have already adopted gender-neutral nomenclature such as “our Creative Force” or simply “our Creator.” However, to call God “Her/Mother” begs the question: isn’t the feminizing of names just the flipside of the same thing? Buoyed by evidence, Dr. Gafney points out that to create a healthy balance, if you don’t take the further step of Her/Mother and stay with neutral terms, our unconscious bias automatically fills in a white He/Father instead. When I first heard Bobby McFerrin’s version of the 23rd Psalm, “The Lord is my shepherd… She maketh me lie down…,” I wept with grief and joy. Not only did it feel authentic, since many shepherds in far-flung reaches of the globe are actually female, but it also pointed out how many people have been so obliterated from texts. And it’s all based on perceived inherent superiority. When I was a college kid in 1972, I heard white feminist Gloria Steinem and Black feminist Dorothy Pitman Hughes speak in Billings, Montana. Together they warned about “culturally correct” authorities pitting women against women, as the white male-dominated press loved “catfights.” Steinem and Hughes were all about intersectionality and inclusion. And Steinem said,
“However sugar coated and ambiguous, every form of authoritarianism must start with a belief in some group’s greater right to power, whether that right is justified by sex, race, class, religion or all four. However far it may expand, the progression inevitably rests on unequal power and airtight roles within the family.” Ideas about supremacy and superiority have their genesis in whatever our parents teach us through word and deed… or our rebellion against it. When I was a little girl in my lily-white Lutheran church in South Dakota, I wish I’d seen Dr. Gafney preaching. “Glem det”—Norwegian for “Fat chance”—even though my parents were progressives and probably would have loved hearing scripture from a feminist/womanist perspective. The good news is now, in these “safer at home” times, you and your family can join us on this year-long journey! The men and boys need to experience a few of the 111 women in the Bible who have names and what their voices say to our times. A warning: some of these stories involve family violence, like rape and incest. ASC is providing an age-appropriate nontriggering alternative for those occasions. While you may not be able to smell the candles or hear the echoes of ASC’s soaring ceilings, you can still have your spirit soar as you hear the newly created music along with the newly revealed stories of women. n Ellen Snortland has written “Consider This…” for a heckuva long time, and she also coaches first-time book authors! TIDINGS OF JOY JAYCEES’ OPERATION SANTA DELIVERS TOYS TO CHILDREN BY SHIRLEY HAWKINS
T
he grateful smiles of children will greet Santa, Mrs. Claus and the Christmas elves during the Pasadena Jaycees’ Operation Santa Toy Drive, a local tradition that has been held since 1934. Each year, underprivileged children in Pasadena write letters to Santa, hoping to receive a toy. Pasadena residents who volunteer as Santas distribute toys to the children. But this year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Operation Santa’s procedures will be different. With COVID-19 impacting the country, members of Operation Santa will be taking extra precautions to ensure that parents, their children as well as volunteers are safe. “We are working with a certified emergency manager to make sure that we’re following all city and state safety guidelines in regard to COVID-19,” said Tessa Young, this year’s Operation Santa’s project chair. “We will be maintaining social distance for all of our volunteers by requiring them to wear face masks and gloves. The families will be required to stay in their vehicles for the entire time of gift giving. There will be no contact between the volunteers and the families when they pick up their toys.” Young said the letter-writing procedure has been changed to virtual.

“The children can access our website at opsanta.com and they can fill out a form and then upload a copy of their letter. Then we will send them an email confirmation to let them know when to pick up their toys. We are expecting to receive over 1,000 letters from children this year,” she said. Operation Santa will be conducting a safe, contactless drive-through pick up at the Pasadena Scottish Rite building. “We have volunteers from local high schools who will place the toys in the trunk of the cars as the families drive up while Santa waves to the children. And Christmas music will be playing during the festivities,” she said. Young said several corporations have generously donated funds to help purchase toys. “This year, we received a $4,000 grant from Pasadena’s Tournament of Roses and Toys for Tots has also given generously as well.” And Young added that each year Pasadena residents have also been generous when it comes to opening their hearts and pocketbooks to purchase toys. She added there is still time for local residents to make donations to purchase toys. “We are accepting donations all the way to December 16,” said Young. “The easiest way to donate to Operation Santa is to go to opsanta.com where there is an Amazon wish list. Otherwise, those who want to donate can send us an email to coordinate a toy drop off.” Young said she has been deeply touched by some of the letters she has received. “There was one family with three children and they were homeless. They didn’t have a home address, but they still wanted to ensure that they could receive some toys. They didn’t tell me where they lived, so I arranged for someone to pick up the toys. They were appreciative to even be included.” Gregory Gabriel, a sheriff at the Altadena Sheriff’s station and a mason at the Scottish Rite in Pasadena, was once one of the children whose Christmas was made brighter by Operation Santa. “My dad knew some of the fellows who volunteered as Santas for Operation Santa and they would drop by our house on Christmas Eve and bring my brother and me a toy,” Gabriel said. “I was about 4 or 5 years old, so that was a really cool thing. I remember one year my brother and I got a racing set and a miniature golf set.” Now Gabriel volunteers his time to help Operation Santa distribute toys to children at the Scottish Rite. “Each family will be given a date and time to come to the Scottish Rite so that we can give them their toys. Families will be able to pick up toys on from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, December 18, and Saturday, December 19, and from 3 to 6 p.m. Monday, December 20.” Gabriel said any surplus toys are donated to the Shriner’s Children’s hospital in Pasadena. “All of our toys will find a home,” he said. Gabriel wanted to thank Ontario’s Beauty 21, which each year donates makeup for preteen and teenage girls. “The leftover makeup is donated to battered women’s shelters,” he said. Natalie Andres, the past president of the Pasadena Jaycees, said participating in Operation Santa is her favorite project. “It’s been such a hard year for everybody with the COVID-19 pandemic and we wanted to make this year a special Christmas,” said Andres. “And we noticed that this year, there’s been an increase of children in need. “There is a wish list. Operation Santa can send the giver a tag that will list the child’s name and age and what toy the child wants. The child and the parent can then choose the time slot when they will be available to receive the toys at the Scottish Rite on opsanta.com.” Charlie Orchard, 54, has fond memories of Operation Santa. “I used to dress as Santa Claus and my wife was an elf,” he recalled. “I played Santa twice. It’s an incredibly heartwarming and rewarding experience.” Orchard recalled one year there was a 6- or 7-year-old girl who requested a toy dinosaur. “When I pulled that dinosaur out of the bag it was such a joy just to see her eyes light up,” he said. “Being involved with Operation Santa is the sort of thing you look forward to again as soon as you’re done,” Orchard said. “You think about all the toys you delivered to the children and you have a much more enjoyable Christmas.” n 12.10.20 | PASADENA WEEKLY 5

PUBLIC SAFETY CHAIRMAN STEPS DOWN COUNCILMAN KENNEDY STEPS DOWN FOLLOWING THE MAYORAL ELECTION BY MATTHEW RODRIGUEZ
C
ouncilman John Kennedy stepped down as chairman of the Public Safety Committee in a letter addressed to mayor-elect Victor Gordo. “The work of the Public Safety Committee is extremely important,” Kennedy said. “Public safety is more than just police and fire. It is the sum total of what is necessary to ensure the public’s health.” Kennedy has a long career of working in police departments. He served as the deputy chief of police in Richmond, Virginia, before returning to Pasadena and joining the city council. He began his tenure as chairman of the PSC after Councilwoman Jacque Robinson resigned. In 2015, Kennedy tried to step down from the committee, but Mayor Terry Tornek persuaded the former deputy chief of police to stay and serve as the chairman of the committee. While Kennedy has overseen many initiatives from improving the practices of the Pasadena Police Department with body-worn cameras and redesigning the Colorado Street Bridge to deter suicide attempts, his most significant legislation was the creation of the civilian police oversight commission. “The most significant legislation that was passed by the city council related to public safety is community oversight of the Pasadena Police Department,” Kennedy said. “I began that journey almost six years ago with initially zero support.” Kennedy’s colleagues told him there was “no appetite” for an oversight committee. Kennedy himself was not sure that civilian oversight was necessary, but after seeing studies and data surrounding the idea, he believed that it deserved a conversation. Community oversight was put aside for the majority of his tenure, until the officer-involved death of Anthony McClain. During a traffic stop, he ran away from Officer Edwin Dumaguindin and his partner. Dumaguindin then shot McClain in the back hitting him once in the lower right quarter of his back and grazed his left shoulder. McClain died of his wounds hours later. McClain’s death came during a summer of protests that called for drastic police reform. These protests were sparked by the death of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor and the shooting of Jacob Blake. After the death of Floyd, Tornek vowed to have an oversight commission passed by the council. The process finally came to fruition about a week after McClain’s death. The intricacies of the civilian oversight commission are still being discussed but the framework that Kennedy worked so hard to establish is there. “Community oversight of the Pasadena Police Department is finally here,” Kennedy said. “It was convincing all eight members that include the mayor of the city that we were on the right track. And that it was, in fact, necessary to have more community oversight and engagement with and over the Pasadena Police Department.” Even with his accomplishments as chairman, Kennedy remains humble and eager to keep improving the city. “It’s never a period when you work in any government position,” Kennedy said. “There are always commas or a semicolon. There are no periods. We’re in a state of continuous improvement both at the city council level and every level below the city council level.” Kennedy continues to serve on the city’s finance committee where he hopes to serve as the chairman following presumptive reorganizations following Gordo’s inauguration. “I’m not the chair unless the mayor says I’m the chair and there are other qualified members of the city council, so he may have other ideas,” Kennedy said. “My job is to be supportive of the mayor in providing good government related to our wonderful city.” As Kennedy leaves his position as chairman of the PSC for a new chapter of his political career, he offers a few words of advice to his successor. “Be attentive. Listen to the concerns of everyone,” Kennedy said. “Seek to bring unity to a decision by virtue of getting the best thoughts, minds and practices.” n 6 PASADENA WEEKLY | 12.10.20
POLICE, DEPUTIES INVESTIGATING DOMESTIC VIOLENCE INCIDENT BY ROHIT LAKSHMAN
T
he South Pasadena Police and the Los Angeles Sheriff’s departments are investigating a domestic violence incident that ended in murder. According to LASD, South Pasadena officers arrived at 500 block of Fair Oaks Drive, responding to a call reporting domestic violence in progress. Officers first came upon a shattered window, and the sound of screaming women inside. Inside, officers discovered the body of an as-of-now unnamed suspect (white male, 40s) stabbed and beaten. SPPD as well as the South Pasadena Fire Department, who arrived shortly after the body was discovered, failed to resuscitate the suspect. SPPD and LASD have tentatively determined an adult male illegally entered the premises through a broken window and attacked his estranged girlfriend. While the suspect was in the processes of beating and choking the female victim, her mother and adult sister came to her aid. During the struggle, the suspect was stabbed and beaten with a golf club. The female victim, after being treated for her injuries, has been released. Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500. n
COVID COUNT Reported Cases in Pasadena and surrounding areas as of December 7 South Pasadena: 474; Alhambra: 2,174; Altadena: 1,167; Arcadia: 914; Glendale: 6,930; Monrovia: 1,232; San Gabriel: 1,128 Total Confirmed Cases in Pasadena: 4,197 Total Deaths in Pasadena: 136 Total Confirmed Cases in LA County: 449,851 Total Deaths in LA County: 7,909 • As COVID-19 surges throughout the state, Pasadena sets a grim milestone. On December 6, the city reported 120 new cases— the most recorded on a single day. For three days straight, Pasadena has surpassed its record each day. Over the weekend 322 new cases were reported. According to Lisa Derderian, the city’s spokeswoman, a majority of the new cases stem from Thanksgiving gatherings. The median age of the new deaths was about 40 years old. Derderian also stated that most of the new cases were spread through children in their 20s to their parents in their 40s and 50s. • Gov. Gavin Newsom enacted a new stay-at-home order as California
COVID-19 surges throughout the state. The new order calls for regions to close restaurants and other services if its ICU bed availability drops below 15%. Pasadena restaurants served their last meal for indoor and outdoor dining December 5. After diverging from the county order to cease all indoor and outdoor dining, Pasadena decided to follow the state order fully. Parks such as the Rose Bowl loop will stay open if residents follow the COVID-19 guidelines by wearing masks and practicing social distance. Two weeks ago, city officials enforced the mask policy, reminding 73 people to don their masks, four of whom refused to put on their masks and ran away from officials. • Harvest Rock Church in Pasadena continues its legal fight against Newsom’s health order. The church alleges that Newsom’s order to stop indoor religious services violates its First Amendment rights, even though Newsom has allowed protests to occur. Newsom’s new health order allows outdoor protests and worship services. Its new motion comes after the U.S. Supreme Court granted an injunction for churches and synagogues in New York. — Information Complied by Matthew Rodriguez

TACKLING THE NEW NORM PASADENA GIRL SCOUT CREATES A VIRTUAL TOUR FOR HER GOLD AWARD PROJECT BY MATTHEW RODRIGUEZ
Submitted photo
L
ed by a preteen tour guide, third-grader Amanda Kiesel walked around the Fenyes Mansion for the first time, instantly falling in love with the century-old building. “I really enjoyed touring the mansion,” said Kiesel, now a senior at Marshall Fundamental High School. “I thought it was really cool to be led by a student that wasn’t much older than me because I feel like they could relate more.” Similar to many other businesses during the pandemic, Fenyes Mansion closed during the March shutdown. While the mansion offered a virtual tour, it was designed for adults. Searching for a project for her Gold Award—the highest award in the Girl Scouts—and hoping to share her experiences in the mansion, Kiesel curated a youth-specific virtual tour. “We have to put in 80 hours of service in order to achieve,” said Kiesel. “Ultimately it has to be something that you’re passionate about and creates a sustainable impact on the community.” “Given that we’re in the middle of a pandemic, students aren’t allowed to gather in groups anymore or even go to school,” said Kiesel. “One of the downsides is that they miss out on opportunities like visiting the Pasadena History Museum and touring Fenyes Mansion.” She first went to Jeannette O’Malley, the executive director of the Pasadena Museum of History. “Amanda came to me looking to do her Gold Award,” O’Malley said. “We talked long about what would be the best project. We collaborated and came up with the idea that she would do a tour of the mansion for the youth because she was trained as a junior docent.”
Kiesel’s passion grew as she learned more about Fenyes Mansion when she became a junior docent with the Pasadena Museum of History in seventh grade. In this program, she became the pre-teen tour guide leading kids around Fenyes. “She was very interested. She was a really good student,” said Brad Macneil, the director of education and public programming. “She really jumped into the program. [She] took it seriously and was a great tour guide in the seventh grade.” As a junior docent, Kiesel learned not only the intricacies of the mansion but how to convey the mystique to children. She used this knowledge to curate the tour, gathering her favorite artifacts from the mansion and writing the kid-friendly text with it. She tried to emulate the same experience she once received when she was a third-grader. “I really like to learn, and I want other students to enjoy learning as well,” said Kiesel. “I feel like if there’s any way that can make the experience more exciting for them and make them excited to learn that’s great!” With her virtual tour open, Kiesel is excited kids can learn more about Fenyes Mansion. “[I’m most excited about] the fact that kids will be able to share my love for the museum and for history in general in a way that I can relate to them,” said Kiesel. “I think it will be interesting how they can possibly relate their own life experiences and kind of reflect on how the history of the mansion and Pasadena has impacted their life today.” n

TWO FOR TEA
STORY BY FRIER MCCOLLISTER | PHOTO BY LUIS CHAVEZ
T
ea. No, not boba, matcha or chai. Tea. Proper tea, which is to say proper English high tea, preferably served in a parlor or garden. Table settings should be composed with creaseless linens, flatware placed with metric precision and stacked trays of finger sandwiches, scones and shortbread biscuits. And from a properly scalded porcelain pot—kept warm with a quilted cosy—after steeping for exactly 3 minutes: tea. “You always take the pot to the kettle, never the kettle to the pot,” so said Edmund Fry, 80, who, with his wife of 43 years, Mary McNeill Fry, 73, has been operating the Rose Tree Cottage, as a tearoom and emporium of British imports, in Pasadena since 1978. Mind you, I’m sitting in the Royal Safari Pavilion located in the cottage’s garden with Fry, who is, as ever, dressed in full formal black tie with white dress gloves on a Wednesday morning. Fry continued on the subject of tea, but he might as well be talking about every aspect of life at Rose Tree Cottage. “There’s a lot to it. We are sticklers, when it comes to doing it properly.” By the way, the Frys also have children. Eight hundred of them. In Kenya. More on that in a moment. Born in London, “under a table during the Blitz,” Fry met McNeill Fry, an Oklahoman with Scottish grandparents, while both worked at Robinson’s department store in Downtown Los Angeles. They moved to Pasadena shortly after their marriage, when McNeill Fry began working as a buyer for the now-shuttered import specialty store, Ports-of-Call on South Lake. Fry moved to work at Bullocks on Wilshire. “(Bullocks) had a magnificent tearoom,” Fry said. “Stolen from Fortnum & Mason,” he added, referring to the legendary British “royal grocer.” He should know. He worked in the tea department at Fortnum & Mason, off Piccadilly in London, before coming stateside. On Bullocks, McNeill Fry further qualified, “They didn’t know how to make a decent pot of tea.” As Bullocks prepared to close its tearoom, the Frys began planning to open the original location of Rose Tree Cottage in Pasadena. In a small complex of three bungalows on South Lake and California, Rose Tree Cottage began to bloom in late 1978. Business began to take off as they attracted the displaced regular clientele from Bullocks. The couple also began organizing group tours of Great Britain, which became a routine aspect of their business. The touring business prompted their first African safari, which they led in 2000. The trip brought them to Kenya and to their ultimate calling. Outside Nairobi, they encountered a dilapidated rural school. An initial donation of books sparked an ongoing mission to restore and sustain the school. To that end, the Frys established a nonprofit corporation: Bloom Where Planted. The nonprofit is charged with a mission to “enhance the lives of children and further education in Kenya.” The description is taken from the recently published book, “Proverbs of Kenya,” featuring illustrations by the students. The handsome softbound book is displayed prominently at the main counter of the Rose Tree, where it sells for $17.95. All proceeds directly support the school. For the current holiday season, Christmas tree ornaments—some made by the Kenyan children—are also sold to support the school’s operation. As Fry explains, “(Rose Tree Cottage) is the engine that drives our school.” All the money goes to the children. The current location of Rose Tree Cottage—in the stately manse located on the corner of Pasadena Avenue and Bellefontaine—just celebrated its 12th anniversary in November. The “cottage” is a warren of rooms packed tightly with British imports of every stripe. In addition to being the only authorized West Coast dealers of Barbour field jackets and outerwear, Fry also has an exclusive dealership for renowned AGA oven ranges (or “cookers” as the Brits say), one of which is in constant use in the kitchen. Comestibles? Offered for take-out or supping in the garden—besides, McNeill’s meat pies—curry chicken; chicken and mushroom; Guinness steak and mushroom or shepherd’s pie—you can also choose from such British classics as beans on toast, Welsh rarebit or bangers and mash. Jams, preserves, marmalades, lemon curd and chutneys are all made from scratch. In a backroom, an impressive array of British candies and sweets are displayed—Maltesers, Smarties, Cadbury Flake and Curlywurly. The gang’s all here! “Teatime Gift Boxes” packed with everything you need for a proper tea can be picked up or shipped. They come in three sizes priced at $36.50, $49.50 for two people and $95 for the family size. Now more about teatime.

By the time you read this, anything may have changed relative to LA County’s pandemic protocols, let alone Pasadena’s notable and exceptional allowance for outdoor dining. Suffice it to say, my daughter, Ruby, and I took the window of opportunity to hazard a picnic tea in the placid garden of Rose Tree Cottage, on the lovely Sunday afternoon prior to the onset of the new modified safer-at-home order and before any further restrictions might otherwise prevent us. Admirably escorted by Fry to our corner table, we took our places as the sound of a breezy bossa nova wafted over the garden. Picnic-style tea entails a bag packed with all needed items, in individual COVID-19-safe containers. A Thermos replaces the teapot but once everything is set in its proper place and tray, high tea it is. The cheese plate consisted of a pleasingly sharp Welsh cheddar as well as wedges of ripe brie, served with housemade oat biscuits and fig chutney. The elegant finger sandwich selection includes beef in a bun, curried chicken salad with mango, and cucumber with Derby sage cheese. The sandwiches were accessorized by two tiny speckled quail eggs bedded on sea salt. Fresh housemade scones served traditionally with Devon clotted cream and fresh jam, as well as fresh shortbread and petit fours rounded out the treats. In addition to the tea, chilled Elderflower soda—a Queen’s favorite—provided cool refreshment between bites and sips. By the way, the house brand English Village tea is a blend of three varieties of tea leaf, a calibration that took the Frys nearly five years to perfect. A host of luminaries has passed through the tearooms and garden here. Although the Frys are eminently discreet regarding the disposition of the royal family locally, they will allow that Andrew Morton, the royal photographer and biographer is an enthusiastic patron of Bloom Where Planted. Among others, the king of Rwanda enjoyed tea here and Angela Lansbury was a loyal regular in the garden. It’s no wonder. Rose Tree Cottage exudes charm, casual sophistication and good humor, while adhering to the traditional parameters of proper high tea. For the holidays, brass band concerts follow the 1 p.m. tea services for two weekends. Regardless, we all are in need of an antidote to the ongoing anxious tedium of the pandemic. For a fully immersive and restorative repast that will effectively transport you from the daily doldrums, come to Rose Tree Cottage. 800 Kenyan kids will thank you. n

n 1972, a landmark exhibition opened in Pasadena at the then-new Pasadena Art Museum (now the Norton Simon Museum). It would cover 13,000 square feet, have 1,300 objects and put together almost entirely with volunteer effort in 10 days. That exhibit, “Islands in the Land,” curated by a woman known as the Godmother of Pasadena Art, Eudorah Moore, is the subject of a segment in a new PBS Craft in America episode called “Democracy.” It premieres at 10 p.m. Friday, December 11, or can be streamed on the PBS video app and craftinamerica.org. Moore, who died in 2013, was filmed in 2004 when Craft in America was just beginning its work. “Eudorah was such an important person in the craft and in the art world, we said let’s interview her just to have it,” said Carol Sauvion, executive director of Craft in America. “All these years later, I was finally able to tell the story of ‘Islands in the Land.’ We were fortunate to have that footage so we could have her voice.” The segment also contains interviews with her son, Ren Moore, who has gathered a wealth of information about and photos of the exhibit and published it on a website called islandsintheland.com, and Gere Kavanaugh, a prominent designer who was responsible for the design of the museum exhibition. Craft as an artform Both stressed the exhibition’s importance and the work that Eudorah did for craft, for Pasadena, Southern California and craftspeople around the country. She eventually worked with the National Endowment for the Arts to promote craft and contribute to the lobbying effort to Congress for funding. “I grew up with a mom who started her career as a volunteer and grew into her role at the museum and in Pasadena,” Ren said. “One of the important takeaways of who she was is that she was a populist. What I mean by that is that she viewed the arts as something that should be accessible to everybody. Also, her view of what is art was very expansive. She had a very refined eye, but it was never limited to
what art ‘should’ be according to the ‘experts.’ That was the real beauty of what she brought to the community of Pasadena.” What she advocated and achieved with her seminal exhibitions—both “Islands in the Land” and several “California Design” exhibitions—was to broaden the value of craft and design. The museum had been primarily focused on modern art that was very contemporary and primarily paintings. “Most of the people who were in the (museum) leadership roles were collectors as well as trying to run a museum,” Ren Moore said. “They had very strong views about what art is and should be.” Kavanaugh said Eudorah rejected a bias that limited art to fine art paintings and selected things in a very democratic way. “She had a very keen eye of what was happening from fine art through crafts,” Kavanaugh said. “She did not have a narrow vision. She had a very big vision and was not what I call a niche viewer.” Honoring convergence of cultures “Islands in the Land” featured the work of crafters from two regions of the United States—Appalachia and the Valley of the Rio Grande. It focused on living craftsmen and craftswomen who worked in traditional forms from their geographic area. In each place, there was a convergence of cultures which Eudorah made sure was represented in the exhibition, whether it was from traditions that were Anglo, Black, European, Chicano or Pueblo Indian. It was the first-time crafts from those regions had a major exhibition outside of their geographical origins. It was also, according to Sauvion, one of the first times that objects like that were put into a fine art museum. “Eudorah believed we all have the ability to create art, of course at different levels,” Sauvion said. “Self-expression is important to our culture.” While Ren remembered people 50 years ago calling the objects “dreck,” he also CONTINUED ON PAGE 12

That’s a real steal because residents living outside of the designated 4 states must pay $124 per ounce which totals $2,480 if any remain. “As special counsel to Federated Mint I earn my pay delivering breaking news. And today’s announcement confirming the release of Gold Vault Bricks to the general public is as big as it gets. Believe me, I know how valuable these Gold Vault Bricks are to resellers, collectors, dealers and anyone else who gets their hands on them,” Withrow said. “So my advice is this, anyone who gets an opportunity to get their hands on one of these Gold Vault Bricks better jump at the chance before they’re all gone,” Withrow said. “These Gold Vault Bricks loaded with massive 5-ounce Jumbo State Bars layered in valuable 24 Karat Gold make the most impressive gifts for Christmas, birthdays, graduations, weddings, and any other occasion, especially for that hard-to-buy-for person,” Withrow said. According to Ms. Withrow, since thousands of U.S. residents stand to miss the deadline to claim the gold, today and tomorrow are intended as a “special 48 hour release” for the benefit of persons living in; CA, AZ, NV and OR. This gives residents of those states a fair chance to claim the Gold Vault Bricks and all the valuable gold loaded inside for themselves. But, Ms. Withrow added, “The Gold Vault Bricks are only available as inventory permits during the special 48 hour release and once they’re gone, they’re gone.” The emeritus Treasurer added, “Remember this, these Gold Vault Bricks contain a full 20 ounces of high demand bullion copper layered in valuable 24 Karat Gold and we have no power to stop dealers, resellers, collectors and the like from buying up all the Gold Vault Bricks they can get their hands on and reselling them for a big profit,” Withrow said. Anyone who fails to obtain them during this special 48 hour release may be forced to buy them later in the secondary market from a dealer, reseller or collector at a hefty premium. ”We already know the phones will be ringing off the hook. That’s why hundreds of agents are standing by to answer the phones beginning at 8:30am this morning. We’re going to do our best, but with just 48 hours to answer all the calls it won’t be easy. So make sure to tell everyone to keep calling if all lines are busy. We’ll do our best to answer them all,” Withrow said. “That’s why Federated Mint set up the State Distribution Hotlines in order to make sure residents in the 4 designated states listed in today’s newspaper publication can get them now,” Withrow said. The only thing readers of today’s newspaper publication need to do is make sure they live in one of the 4 states listed in today’s newspaper and call the State Distribution Hotlines before the special 48 hour release ends midnight tomorrow. ■

VALUABLE: THESE ARE THE FOUR 5-OUNCE JUMBO GOLD BARS SEALED AWAY IN EACH GOLD VAULT BRICK BEARING THE STATE DESTINATION
How much are the Gold Vault Bricks worth: The answer is, it’s impossible to say. But, it would be foolish for anyone to try and determine the value of these Gold Vault Bricks based on today’s price of gold. Here’s why. Gold, silver and all precious metal values always fluctuate and there are never any guarantees. But what we do know is that these are the only Gold Vault Bricks still loaded with four 5-ounce Jumbo State Bars known to exist. In fact, the value of the pure 24 Karat Gold layered content is just a bonus for anyone lucky enough to get one of these Gold Vault Bricks because there’s no telling how much the actual collector value could be worth. That makes the minimum gold fee set for state residents of just $ 49 per ounce which totals $ 980 for the full 20 ounces locked away inside these Gold Vault Bricks a real steal since residents living outside of the designated 4 states must pay $124 per ounce, which totals $ 2,480, if any remain. Why the vault fee is so low: Since thousands of U.S. residents stand to miss the deadline to claim the gold, Federated Mint has re-allocated Gold Vault Bricks to be sent out in the next 48 hours. That means the gold is up for grabs and now residents in 4 states can claim the Gold Vault Bricks for themselves and keep all the valuable bars found inside. These are the only Gold Vault Bricks known to exist and everyone wants them. That’s because they’re still loaded with four 5-ounce Jumbo State Bars layered in valuable 24 Karat Gold bearing the name of The First Bank of the United States of America and the state they were once destined for. said every item in the exhibition was juried by academic professionals. And at a time when most exhibitions were juried from a picture, the artisans had to send in the actual physical object to be viewed by the jurists. “To call these things anything other than what they were, which was really delicious pieces of craft or art or design, was just unfounded,” Ren said. “That’s really the way my mom felt about it and that is a really expansive view of what art is and that it should be available and accessible to everyone. That was her vision.” ‘Eudie’s Army’ The project wouldn’t have come to fruition if it weren’t for the passion and energy of volunteers. Kavanaugh was chief among them. When she saw the objects in the storage, she made it very clear that she “desperately wanted” to design this exhibition. She had grown up with folk art and wanted to be a part of what she could tell would be groundbreaking. It would be the first time she turned her formidable design talents to such a task and her work was memorable. “I stayed at Eudorah Moore’s house in Pasadena,” the Los Angeles resident said. “She wouldn’t let me go home because I lived on the west side. I stayed at her house for ten days. We all arrived at the museum at 9 in the morning and worked usually until 9 at night.” There were a group of women known as “Eudie’s Army” and they brought lunch and dinner to the museum every day to feed those who were volunteering. Even her son who was only 11 or 12 at the time, rode his unicycle around the museum delivering messages, something he remembers fondly. “Everyone got a free meal, lunch and dinner,” Ren said. “That’s a huge part of what makes this thing so fun is that everyone was involved in any way they could and everything was very appreciated.” Transforming museum Kavanaugh made expansive use of corrugated cardboard and inexpensive pine wood boxes. She wasn’t allowed to paint the wall, so she wrapped them in cardboard. On the Appalachia side, the cardboard was cut into the shapes of mountains while on the Valley of the Rio Grande side, it was cut to look like adobe walls. “The cases for all of these things were made out of the cheapest kind of plywood that made a connection to the objects and where they came from,” Kavanaugh said. Another major aspect of the design were the photos by Richard Gross who traveled to both the Appalachia and the Valley of the Rio Grand to take pictures of the artisans. He created huge photo murals that were 10 feet by 10 feet square. “(Eudorah Moore) had a sense of scale,” Sauvion said. “She made the photographs larger than life size, so you were dealing with humble objects and gigantic photos of the person sitting on his porch working. She brought Appalachia and the Rio Grande to Pasadena.” The emphasis on the creators is part of what Ren Moore feels is deeply tied to the theme of democracy in the new PBS Crafts in America episode. “One of the things was this idea of the nobility of the creator and the importance of creativity of any type that was really important to my mom,” Ren said, after pointing out in the episode that his mother’s work was art for the people, by the people and of the people. “We all have the ability to be creative. People from Appalachia and the Valley of the Rio Grande—these are people who came from nothing and were able to create these extraordinary objects from the earth. They were so deeply connected to the art of that particular place.” Despite the reservations some had at first, the exhibition was a success in many different ways, Kavanaugh said. They were written about in major newspapers from New York to Los Angeles and the exhibition was highly attended. More importantly, she said, it truly touched those who saw it and they responded emotionally. “There was a sense of joy and of discovery,” Kavanaugh said. “You don’t go into many exhibitions where you see people nicely laughing, but you did with this exhibition. It touched people, it really touched them on many levels. Walking in one wing of the museum, you saw objects from the Appalachian Mountains. You walked across the lobby to the other wing and you saw all these fabulous objects from the pueblos of the Rio Grande. Think of what that feeling is like. It’s pretty great. I consider that a success.” n

STILL DOWN?
AUTHOR TRACES JON B.’S STORY IN NEW BIOGRAPHY BY TRACY HECK
A
uthor/journalist Dominique Carson believes Altadena R&B star Jon B. doesn’t get the attention he deserves. So, she penned the biography “Jon B.: Are You Still Down?” The book— which was featured on Fox, NBC, CBS and Medium online platforms—tells of the singer’s rise to fame against the odds in the late 1990s. “I wrote the book because I’d just finished a biography on a female R&B legend but found out I couldn’t release the book as of yet because of permissions and distribution agreements that hadn’t been worked out yet,” Carson said. “I knew it would be a while, so I put it on hold and decided I wanted to focus on a male R&B artist who doesn’t get the recognition he deserves. I immediately thought of Jon B.” Jon B. grew up in a musical family and ended up working with his idol and subsequent mentor, Babyface. He made musical history after he collaborated with Tupac Shakur. Carson became a fan after seeing him on the TV show “All That” and was drawn to his story. “He has contributed so much, even from a racial standpoint because he had to overcome not being taken seriously because of his skin color,” she said. “From a music perspective, he and Tupac made history with their collaboration because in that time, there weren’t any raw, edgy collaborations with male R&B artists and male hip-hop artists. When you listen to ‘Are You Still Down?’ it has a raw, edgy vibe to it and following that recording, you started to see more of those type of collaborations. That’s how you have Lil Wayne and Robin Thicke and Babyface and Lil Wayne and Chris Brown and Fat Joe. That all started with Tupac and Jon B.” Carson interviewed Jon B. years ago. It was his humble and jovial spirit that stuck with her, “A lot of his most popular songs, like ‘They Don’t Know,’ are songs that people don’t realize are his,” she said. “They think someone else sang them. This was a chance to give him some recognition.” She shared that while researching for the book, she was surprised to learn Shakur was a Jon B. fan before the collaboration. “Another thing that shocked me was that he was the last person to work in the studio with him physically before his death,” Carson said. “That was a big shock. He had the opportunity to have a personal interaction with Tupac. They made such a beautiful vibe together and formed a strong bond in such a short time.” Carson has actively interviewed celebrities since 2013 and recently spoke with rap icon Master P. She began writing as an extra credit assignment that led to a talk with Floyd Carter Sr., one of the original Tuskegee Airmen as they were promoting the 2012 film “Red Tails.” A licensed massage therapist, Carson was pleased to work with friends on “Jon B.: Are You Still Down?” “My team all have their own independent projects, but they were all on board,” she said. “They learned so much because of my passion and drive that sparked their own interest in learning about Jon B.” n

‘Billie’
AN ENGAGING NEW DOCUMENTARY ILLUMINATES JAZZ SINGER’S LIFE
I
n music’s time-space continuum, Billie Holiday, who died in 1959, remains an ageless titan. Her lifelong defiance of authority is the stuff of legend, and singers and musicians still emulate her note-bending, time-teasing style. Seeing Holiday parse beats onstage while appraisingly sliding her eyes across audiences is one of the joys of James Erskine’s 96-minute documentary “Billie,” now streaming on Amazon and iTunes. (A DVD is due in February.) Those performances alone make the film worth viewing; the somewhat controversial decision to restore several in color enhances the timelessness of her music and wit. Thanks to enduring public fascination with Holiday, born Eleanor Fagan in 1915, her life story has already been hashed out in books, documentaries, and films (including Lee Daniels’ forthcoming “The United States vs. Billie Holiday,” starring Andra Day). What distinguishes Erskine’s film are interviews with the likes of Count Basie, Tony Bennett, Charles Mingus, and singers Billy Eckstine and Sylvia Syms (who recalls Holiday’s stagecraft, and clubs “packed with hero worshippers”), conducted in the late 1960s and early ’70s by sometime journalist Linda Lipnack Kuehl for an unfinished biography. Erskine closely tracks a manuscript left behind by Kuehl, who died in 1978 after a fall from a hotel balcony that police ruled a suicide, and her family suspects was murder. Kuehl’s interviews are the film’s chief discoveries, and her charged exchanges with Basie sharpen its drama. Questions raised about their relationship lead to conspiratorial hypothesizing that doesn’t mesh evenly with Holiday’s storyline. They do, however, cast harsh light on racial injustice, then and now—a meaningful thread throughout the film as Kuehl’s research draws connections between Holiday’s career and the emergent civil rights movement. Her probing questions seek the contradictory, flesh-and-blood woman behind the myth: What were Billie’s favorite words? (Profanities.) Was she “one of the boys”? Who did she like to sit with on the tour bus? Did management make Holiday blacken her face when performing in the South? How much was she earning? What drove her addictions? Was she confident about her voice? Her voiceover observations about Holiday’s abusive lovers are insightful: “She always chose them for a reason. They played for her, they protected her, and, in the man’s world of the nightclubs, they allowed her to do the one thing that mattered, which was to sing. Music didn’t bring Billie to Harlem, but it was her voice that would allow her to escape.” Her recollection of first hearing that voice—“a strange voice that was more real and true than anything I’d ever heard before … wailed huskily from some netherworld”—echoes many a fan’s experience. Holiday herself is heard in resurrected radio interviews. In one, she traces the genesis of her classic “God Bless the Child” to an argument with her mother and her realization “that’s a good title for a song”; in another, she speaks her “Don’t Explain” lyric aloud like a poem. She also recalls offended patrons exiting clubs when she sang her anti-lynching signature, Lewis Allan’s “Strange Fruit;” producer Milt Gabler says Columbia didn’t want to record it, due to its controversial “social content.” Kuehl says Holiday’s interpretation, not the song itself, “changed the direction of American music,” and refusal to stop singing it made her a “high-profile target” for the Bureau of Narcotics. A bony Holiday sings the song in a colorized segment from the end of her career, delivering the lyric as a spectral ode, with minimal piano accompaniment. Her voice husky and ravaged, eyes smoldering like twin coals, it’s a performance that still disturbs. n

The Houston instrumental trio offers a worldly perspective on nocturnal music with its “gulf stream”-influenced curation of the Late Night Tales series’ latest edition. Tripping through Asian disco, R&B-infused Ethiopian dance, ’70s Spanish pop, Vegasstyle Belarusian folk, and Nigerian reggae (Maxwell Udoh’s “I Like It [Don’t Stop],” a highlight), the strongest tracks smolder close to home: Khruangbin’s seductive dip into Kool & the Gang’s groover “Summer Madness;” Houston dub outfit Brilliantes Del Vuelo’s “I Know That (When the Spring Time Comes);” and Texan storyteller Tierney Malone’s velvety reading, backed by banjoist Geoffrey Muller, for the Erik Satie-inspired “Transmission for Jehn: Gnossienne No 1”—a hypnotic continuation of LNT’s spokenword tradition. khruangbin.com

A zesty platter of ’50s-style R&B seasoned with Dave Bartholomew, Al King, Roy Milton and Ike Turner chestnuts, plus Robillard’s similarly flavored compositions. The Grammynominated Roomful of Blues founder’s romping call-andresponse exchanges with organist Bruce Bears and a three-piece horn section constitute a clinic on guitar taste and harmony, while his 10-minute jam “Just Chillin’” evokes those show-closing numbers when every player steps up to solo and dancers press close to the stage. JULES SHEAR, “Slower” (Funzalo): HHHH
“Tomorrow you’ll feel better/ If it only comes:” The poetic songwriter opens with the melodic “Sugar All Day,” setting a tone of hope streaked with melancholy (and vice versa), and sounding like Elvis Costello backed by John Sebastian’s Toots Thielemans on down-at-heels harmonica. Piano-centered arrangements and the recording’s warm immediacy enhance confessional standouts “Feels Like Fall,” “One Pretty Please” and cocktail ballad “Today Like Tomorrow.” The Bangles and Cyndi Lauper, among others, built careers with Shear’s songs in the 1980s and ’90s; his wit cuts through punchy single “Smart,” but he mostly contemplates time, expectations, and choices in this filler-free set. julesshearshow.com
BO ARMSTRONG, “Chasing Ballads” (Tough Cut): HHH
The title speaks truth: the Texas-raised teacher turned Nashville bard’s strong suit is ballads. The pedal steel-polished arrangements of the title track, “Mama Sway,” “Where Are You Lonesome?” (a slow-burn duet with Taylor Stearns) and “Wearing Out These Wings” complement Armstrong’s flannel-warm vocal delivery and comforting lyrics, which celebrate humble life moments (“The way that you move is steady and true/ You shine like the breaking of day”). He doesn’t reshape the country wheel, but his flannel-warm vocals and melodies should hit a sweet spot for listeners in the mood for mellow vibes and gratitude. boarmstrongmusic.com
