arning: This column contains a mix of truth, satire and fiction. Do not consume if you are experiencing shortness of breath, are pregnant or suspect you might be pregnant, or are irony and absurdity challenged. Happy Valentine’s Day! Raise a glass to the most overwrought, phony-baloney commercialized “holiday” ever invented. The day is a setup for hearts, all right: broken hearts and heartache. Other than that, it’s peachy. Speaking of phonies, Drumpf has been delivering valentines to the Kremlin regularly. Da, it’s true! Investigative journalist and author Craig Unger spills the borscht on the whole sordid scene in his new book, “American Kompromat: How the KGB Cultivated Donald Trump.” This is a follow-up to Unger’s 2018 book “House of Trump, House of Putin.” Thanks to interviews with many people on the inside, including former KGB Maj. Yuri Shvets — or “Shvetty” as his New York friends like to call him after Alec Baldwin’s infamous sketch on SNL — we learn that Drumpf has been shvetting for 40 years! It would not be hyperbole to call Drumpf Putin’s sweetheart. Head-scratching, I ponder, “What kind of anvil does Drumpf have hanging over the heads of some of his lackeys? What strings are attached? Why would they sell their souls to this Kremlin Kreep?” There’s ample, highly credible evidence that Putin has a sickle and hammer hanging over Drumpf. But what has Ted Cruz, Susan Collins, Devin Nunez, Kevin McCarthy and too many other sycophants to name in a short column dancing to marionette strings? Teacher, I’m raising my hand! I know the answer — they’re controlled by Z, of ZAnon! Z, their leader, uses QAnon as a colossal diversion, manipulating the “base” to believe in Q while those in power are actually following Z. Next time you’re around any Republican die-hard Drumpfers in the House or Senate, ask them to show you their armpits. They’ll refuse because it will give them away by showing they are part of the ZAnon cult, which itself is an offshoot of NXIVM (pronounced “Nexium”). If you don’t know what NXIVM is, consider yourself lucky. Convicted sex trafficker and NXIVM cult leader Keith Raniere is currently serving 120 years in prison for, among other things, having a harem of sex slaves. These women were highly intelligent, privileged, and easy on the eyes — oh, did I mention they were all white? Raniere required they hold each other down to be branded with his initials, placed dangerously close to their private parts. What people do not know, until this exposé here in my column, is that Drumpf was the NXIVM leader in charge of Keith Raniere! Drumpf’s improvement on the crotch tattoo was to have selected Republicans hold each other down to receive their DLV armpit tattoos, the acronym for Donny Loves Vladimir. ZAnon also requires that its believers adhere to the practice of projecting whatever they are doing onto the people they attack. When you hear the wretched congressional rep from Georgia, Rep. Loony Tunes Taylor, and she’s talking about Jewish Space Lasers, that means she’s actually aiming laser beams at various (in her words) “weak-minded” Republicans — those still showing a smidgen of being in touch with reality. She targets their prefrontal cortex to fry their reasoning abilities and send their moral compasses a-spinnin’. After her treatment, they won’t know right from wrong, fact from fiction, up from down, or Q from Z! “YowZa” is the Z cult’s secret code word, which stands for You Owe Whiteness to ZAnon. They pit bump, but only if no one is looking. QAnon was all a ruse. The conspiracy theory that Bill Gates, Dr. Fauci and the World Health Organization are spearheading COVID-19 vaccinations so they can implant trackers in all of us is way off. Thanks to Z, we’re already being tracked and have been for decades via the barcodes on those teeny-tiny stickers found on all
our fruits and veggies. You can always turn down a vaccine, but you have to eat, right? Nice try, Z, but we’re on to you now! Forget Gates and WHO: The actual cabal is Keith Raniere, Dr. Ben Carson and Oral Roberts University. They teamed up to implant chips in us through the food supply and everyday purchases. You know how Dr. Carson always had that “deer in the headlights” look whenever you saw him on TV during the Drumpf administration? That was due to him working day and night, examining the results of the brain chips to rope people into having sex with him, Drumpf, and the entire Board of Oral Roberts U. How do you think the late Rev. Roberts got his first name, huh? Ever thought about that? I know these are all shocking revelations and not what you wanted for a valentine. But, as I said at the outset, Valentine’s Day has never been all it’s cracked up to be. So, pull up your big kid panties and listen to Z — she knows what’s best. SIX YEARS OF PLANNING COMES DOWN TO 7 MINUTES BY JANA J. MONJI

he level of anxiety will be astronomical in Pasadena on Thursday, Feb. 18. JPL-NASA’s Mars 2020 Perseverance rover mission is scheduled to land on Mars on that day. Andrew Johnson is one of those people who will be in high anxiety mode during the 7-minute descent, which will be carried live on NASA Television and its website beginning at 11:15 a.m. Johnson, who has Ph.D. from the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University, developed the spin-image surface signature for object recognition and surface matching. He is a principal member of the technical staff at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, where he works on image-based techniques for autonomous navigation and mapping during the descent to planets, moons, comets and asteroids. For the Mars Exploration Rover Project, he is the lead algorithm developer for the Descent Image Motion Estimation Subsystem (DIMES), the first autonomous machine vision system used during the planetary landing. How does autonomous navigation work? There is no GPS on Mars, not yet, but the satellites that are already orbiting Mars have provided grayscale photos. One in particularly has a high-resolution camera with pixels that are 1-foot across. Those images are “stitched” together. Two images that are of the same spot, but the satellite was in a different position help form an elevation map “that’s like your eyes, doing stereoscope.” From there, math comes in. “We use a technique called correlation which is a mathematical technique. Correlation is a way to measure how similar two sets of data are,” Johnson explained. When you have two sets of numbers and “plot them on a 2D graph, if they follow a line, then those are highly correlated.” The same basic technique is used in statistics. In grayscale, the pixels have a brightness value. It can be a range of “0 to 255 or 0 to 1023.” A computer attempts to determine very quickly if the data correlates. On Perseverance, a computer will compare the data quickly and make decisions about the landing as part of the “terrain-relative navigation” system. The system was tested using software simulation. That’s easily done thousands of times. The real fun comes during the field tests. First you have to find terrain like Mars. “It can’t really have trees; there are not trees on Mars,” Johnson explained. Bushes are OK, but not man-made objects. Southern California happens to be an ideal place if you head inland to Death Valley National Park or Mojave National Reserve. The team took the system out on a helicopter. During the two-week testing period, the usually hot and dry desert was having the big rains of 2019. “One of the flights had to be cut off due to wind and rains,” he said. During the 19 flights, the system was run 650 times over different terrain. Testing continues with the hardware in place at JPL. Due to COVID-19, Johnson was unable to attend last year’s July 20 Mars 2020 launch from Cape Canaveral in Florida. As the subsystem manager for guidance navigation and control, he works on systems that are like the autopilot. In a telephone interview, Johnson said he’s working from home as part of COVID-19 restrictions but will be on-site on Feb. 18. After six years of anxiety, Johnson is already looking at his next projects which include figuring out how to collect the test tube-sized samples of Mars materials from Perseverance and bring them back to Earth. The terrain-relative navigation system and laser-based sensors (light detection and ranging or LIDAR) are part of the future that includes landing astronauts on the moon, but these automated systems set up another challenge of man versus machine. According to Johnson, in the past, astronauts had been drawn from test pilots “who had a record of being able to react quickly to bad situations” and one of his current reads, the 2008 “Digital Apollo” looks at the first computer for the Apollo missions, during a time when computers were rare and big. The book “shows there’s this tension in aerospace between the human side (astronauts) and then people like me who work to do everything autonomously” and with the future moon mission this tension will be coming back. n

According to Pasadena Star-News, the city will receive 2,075 doses, 725 doses short of the expected 2,800. Pasadena has the infrastructure to run four vaccine clinics a week, however with the lack of doses the city will only have one clinic this week. According to Pasadena Star-News, if this rate continues, officials estimate that it will take two years to vaccinate all of Pasadena’s residents. “We can only distribute vaccines that we have, and we don’t have many,” said city spokeswoman Lisa Derderian. • Pasadena’s Harvest Rock Church began gathering inside its sanctuary again, after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in their favor, granting them a partial injunction against California’s COVID-19 related prohibition against indoor worship services. In a 6-3 vote, the Supreme Court ruled that “regulations like these violate the First Amendment unless the State can show they are the least restrictive means of achieving a compelling government interest.” The ruling does allow the state to restrict indoor services to 25% capacity. • According to Pasadena-Star News, a maker and distributor of COVID-19 rapid test kits expanded its Pasadena operation as it ramps up production. Innova Medical Group recently leased 25,000 square feet of additional office space as it hopes to hire 1,600 Southern California Workers amid the pandemic. Innova tests are highly sought after by more than 20 countries, according to the company. In order to meet this need, Innova hopes to produce 5 million test kits a day by the end of February and eventually increase production 10 fold to 50 million per day. — Information compiled by Matthew Rodriguez
‘FOWL’ PLAY AT ROSCOE’S IN PASADENA BY JAKARIA ROSS

n unmasked suspect shouted an unlikely threat to employees at Roscoe’s House of Chicken & Waffles: “Give me all the chicken you’ve got, or I’ll shoot!” He rushed inside the restaurant, 830 N. Lake Avenue, at 5:40 p.m. Feb. 3 and held the workers at gunpoint after a dispute over wearing a facemask. The suspect took his food, which he had not paid for, and fellow customers’ grub. Prior to the Pasadena police officers’ arrival, the suspect fled the scene in a dark colored, four-door sedan. On his way out, he had to grab plenty of syrup to go with his stolen goods. The restaurant employees described the suspect as an African American male who was approximately 6-foot-1, in his mid-30s and thin. While Pasadena police detectives are analyzing the evidence for additional leads, Lt. Bill Grisafe said he was troubled by the footage on social media sites. “A lot of times if we have an outstanding suspect, the department likes to be able to analyze evidence before information gets out so that it increases our chances of taking the suspect into custody,” Grisafe said. “When it gets placed on social media, the information is not necessarily accurate…which could start a narrative that is not actually true.” The restaurant’s surveillance cameras recorded the incident and officers collected the video as well as other evidentiary items. Although the crime may seem laughable, officials will investigate and treat the incident as an armed robbery. “The fact that he took something through the threat of a gun makes it a robbery,” Grisafe said. “The code says, ‘Taking something through force or fear’… the fact that he had a gun…that’s a concern.” Maybe the suspect was tired of being cooped up during the pandemic.

• DINING • Outdoor dining boosts Pasadena’s economy BY MATTHEW RODRIGUEZ
A
fter the recent COVID-19 surge plateaued, restaurants and patrons greeted the return of outdoor dining. “We were all very happy for us because it gave us the opportunity to have a few more employees who have been laid off,” said Abel Ramirez, owner of El Portal. “We were extremely happy to hear that we will be opening outdoor [dining].” Outdoor dining returned to Pasadena on Jan. 25 after Gov. Gavin Newsom lifted the statewide stay-at-home order following a deadly coronavirus surge. The city and Los Angeles County followed suit, as they immediately reopened outdoor dining. “I got to thank the city for putting the infrastructure in place,” said Paul Little, Pasadena Chamber of Commerce president. “And making it easy for restaurants to open outside when that wasn’t their program previously. The city is doing what they can in that arena and I certainly appreciate that.” Restaurants have struggled during the pandemic. Many have struggled to stay afloat during the pandemic. However, the city has tried to ease the burden on restaurants throughout the entire pandemic. “I think the city and the city staff have done an extraordinary [job], given the circumstances, trying to help businesses open safely, and making it easy for them to do so,” said Little. “As a businessperson I always like to say that they do more but… they’re doing a very good job,” Ramirez added. In addition to the eviction moratoriums and prior programs like the Great Plates Delivered, the city has instituted temporary no-fee permits for outdoor dining. “We’re trying to work with [restaurants] to help with costs and to expedite the permit process,” city spokesperson Lisa Derderian wrote in an email. According to the city’s website, there are nine temporary no-fee permits, eight of which relate to outdoor dining. The permits allow expanded outdoor dining in streets, alleys or sidewalks. “They’ve allowed the restaurants to expand outside without adding any city cost to that,” said Little. “They’re doing a really good job within the constraints of what they’re allowed to do.” According to Little, the infrastructure has allowed the city and restaurants to reopen safely. “I think the safely part is really key to all of this,” he said. “The fact that the health departments can ensure that people are operating within the safety guidelines established is important as a customer.” From a consumer’s point of view, Little wants to feel confident that the restaurant that he goes to for dinner is going to be safe. The same goes from the businessperson’s point of view. Just like a simple case of food poisoning, a restauranter never wants to hear that one of their customers got sick, let alone their employees. “We are compliant with all the regulations, we’re happy to do that,” said Ramirez. “We do not want any person to get sick when they come to see us.
6 PASADENA WEEKLY | 02.11.21
Neither do we want to be sick when they come to see us.” According to the city’s protocol for reopening, the new rules are: • Televisions and other screens that broadcast programming must be turned off. • To achieve 6 feet of distance between customers from different parties, tables must be spaced 8 feet apart when measured from table edge to table edge. • Restaurants must post signage informing guests that parties are limited to only individuals from the same household. • Restaurants must post new signage regarding customer mask wearing and hand hygiene. • Quarantine period reduced from 14 days to 10 days in accordance with the updated Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance. • Clarification added that employee assessments should also include whether they are currently required to be under isolation or quarantine. • Temporary outdoor dining structures must adhere to state guidance and be 50% open with no more than two nonadjacent, impermeable walls closed. Derderian said reopening outdoor dining was of utmost importance for the city, however, they wanted to do so safely. “Our health department conducted a great deal of outreach by e-phone, personal phone calls and in-person visits to highlight the updated COVID protocols,” wrote Derderian. She also wrote that the city will continue investigating complaints and conduct routine inspections if warranted. At the end of the day, even with the restrictions and COVID-19 still looming over his head Ramirez is simply glad to see his customers back in his restaurant. “Just to see them again is a joy for me,” said Ramirez. “I never call them customers. I normally call them our guests. They should feel that way when they come in and we treat them that way.” n

round 1930 in the small Ukrainian city of Kharkov, a successful local baker — Hovsep Ter-Poghossian — buried a cache of gold and jewelry in his backyard. Hoping to avoid the Soviet authorities’ confiscation of his wealth, what followed for Ter-Poghossian and his family is now the stuff of local chocolate lore. Mignon Chocolate Boutique has occupied its small but exquisitely appointed boutique storefront on Holly Street since 2008. It also represents Ter-Poghossian’s legacy and is a testament to the resilience and ingenuity of his family and the business that they created three generations ago. “Originally, it started in Ukraine,” said Hovsep’s grandson, Joe Ter-Poghossian about Mignon Chocolate. “My grandfather was a baker since a young age. He went solo and he started his own bakery in Ukraine. Shortly after, he became very successful and the operation expanded. He started hiring people. After a few years, he had a big fortune.” Due to the communist regime, citizens were forced to turn over their fortune, gold and money. Hovsep turned in a small portion of it and hid some in his backyard. “One of the neighbors knew about it and went to the communist (authorities), and they came one day and started digging in the backyard,” Joe said. “For eight hours, they just looted all the gold and jewelry that my grandfather had buried in the backyard. That was a big crime back then, so, as a punishment, they sent him to Siberia.” In the meantime, Hovsep’s wife, Anoush, scrambled to flee Ukraine with their children. “My grandmother had a very small amount of jewelry,” Joe said. “She took that to the Danish embassy in Ukraine and paid somebody off to get passports, so she could take the family out of Ukraine. “She and two sons were able to escape the country and ended up in Tehran. At the time (Iran) was the only country that would take immigrants of that sort.” She survived on the small amount of gold she had with her. With World War II looming, Hovsep was released from the Siberian prison camp and made his way back to his family. “After six years in prison, my grandfather was released,” Joe said. “Somehow, he was able to reach the family back in Tehran in the ’40s. Upon his arrival, he started his bakery business by borrowing money from his friends, who were able to lend him the money. They reestablished the business and slowly it started taking off. It became one of the main bakeries in Tehran.” Joe’s father, Rouben Ter-Pogossian was born in Tehran and when Hovsep died, he and his older brother, Onnik, took over. “Back in the ’60s, (the brothers) loved to travel and they both were single,” Joe said. “They would take a month off, generally in the summer, and they would travel to Europe. They visited bakeries and chocolate shops and they decided to start the chocolate line. By the mid-’60s, they brought in a chocolate line from Holland and Italy and started a chocolate business. Slowly the bakery shrank, and the chocolate expanded and that’s where we are now. We’re fully in chocolate.” By the early 1970s, Mignon Chocolate was known as “The King of Chocolate” in Tehran. The shah’s family became regular patrons and Rouben visited his palace to personally present and decorate holiday confections. Joe said the family subsequently moved to Los Angeles. “My mother’s side of the family, everybody was here,” Joe said about Los Angeles. “We would visit the family on an annual basis. Back in 1988, my brother and I decided to move here permanently and live with our (maternal) grandparents. I went to CSUN and my brother went to Cal State LA. (After college), I was working in the insurance business. I advanced as much as I could and, one day, I decided this is not what I want to do for the rest of my life. I wanted to continue my family’s business.” Rouben was enthusiastic and encouraged Joe’s career move. “I went back to Tehran,” Joe said. “I hadn’t been back for about 15 or 20 years. So, I go back and start learning the recipes and experimenting myself. I came
THE HUNTINGTON TO RENOVATE HISTORIC GARDEN TEAROOM
Elevation drawing shows what will be the Shakespeare Room, a new pavilion opening onto the Shakespeare Garden.

fter decades of serving guests in its Rose Garden Tea Room, The Huntington Library, Art Museum and Botanical Gardens will renovate and expand it. Since the initial conversion of the building into a tearoom, there have been many alterations to the building over time, particularly to the kitchen areas. This is the first major rehabilitation. “The idea started with a (pre-pandemic) assessment of both the building on the outside and the building and the kitchen on the inside,” said Randy Shulman, The Huntington’s vice president for advancement and external relations. “The architectural details and overall condition of the original tea room have been in decline for many years and need work. Over the past six years, we have worked to stabilize the exterior architectural details as much as possible, but we knew that over the long term it had to be worked on.” The $7.5 million project went into municipal review in January 2021 and The Huntington expects it to be completed in 2022. Developed by The Huntington with Architectural Resources Group (ARG), the project will restore the front of the original building, in addition to a new outdoor dining experience and improved functionality in service areas. “The COVID-19 seating and service considerations helped to inspire the idea of an elegant but exterior fully ventilated structure in the garden for dining,” Shulman said. “After the renovation is completed, the restaurant will be able to function with people seated more than 6 feet apart. Therefore, it would be a safer place for people to enjoy a meal as we emerge from the pandemic.” The Rose Garden Tea Room’s food provider, Bon Appetit, also found the kitchen was inadequate for providing the level of service that it wanted to offer. The project will modernize the kitchen, upgrade the indoor dining space, develop new restrooms and ancillary areas, and create a pavilion on the building’s eastern side that opens onto the Shakespeare Garden for exterior dining service. “The pavilion will be able to seat approximately 44 in COVID-spaced seating, approximately 68 in normally spaced seating,” added Steve Farneth, the project architect for The Huntington’s Rose Garden Tea Room renovation and founding partner of ARG. “Overall, including interior and exterior seating, the new facility will seat approximately the same number as it does currently.” The project plans to renovate the room on the west side of the building that opens to the Herb Garden. In addition to being used for the tearoom’s general service, it will be made available for private rentals. “On the west side of the building, we will replace an existing wood frame dining room with a slightly larger, but much more open space overlooking the Herb
Garden,” Farneth said. “Rolling doors along the south, west and north walls will open the room to the Herb Garden.” The renovation comes on the heels of The Huntington’s Centennial Celebration, which kicked off on September 2019 and features a yearlong series of exhibitions, public programs and new initiatives. The tearoom is part of The Huntington’s historic core and will connect the building to the surrounding gardens’ visual and physical elements, making for a unique tea experience. “The tearoom has been closed to the public since March because of the COVID-19 pandemic,” Shulman said. “However, when the tearoom reopens, we will be offering a high tea table service like we have in the past, including a vegan and gluten-free high tea, and expanding the add-on section of fresh salads, soups, cheese plates and charcuterie boards.” For more information, visit huntington.org n
back (to LA) and started planning and the next thing you know we established the factory in Van Nuys (in 2003).” Partnered with his younger sister, Anoush, Joe and the family opened the first American Mignon outlet in Glendale in April 2004, followed by the Pasadena location in November 2008. The advent of the pandemic posed inevitable challenges as business shrank. “We had to shut down for about two months in March,” Joe said. “That was a big toll on everybody. We reopened in early June. Before COVID, we had up to 15 employees. We had big wholesale accounts with hotels and restaurants. All of that has vanished. We are down to about eight employees right now.” He successfully applied for the available Paycheck Protection Program and Small Business Administration loans. “That’s what saved us. It was a big help,” Joe said. They also revamped their website to make online, advance ordering seamless. Chocolate lovers can fully customize their online orders through the website and orders over $75 will be shipped or delivered at no charge. Joe suggests the store’s “Hearts Collection” for Valentine’s Day. It features chocolates in four flavors: dark chocolate shell with dark chocolate strawberry ganache and a touch of strawberry syrup; raspberry milk chocolate shell and raspberry ganache; mango heart with a purple, pink heart, milk chocolate shell
and a dark chocolate mango ganache; and a purple heart with a dark chocolate shell and dark chocolate passionfruit ganache and a touch of passionfruit syrup. It also comes with one red lip-shaped chocolate with a dark chocolate shell and a dark chocolate champagne ganache. The collection comes in two sizes: 14 pieces at $20 or 30 pieces for $35 and will arrive in an elegant heart-shaped velvet gift box. That said, four-piece custom boxes start at $8 and there are gift boxes for nearly any occasion. The online portal is easy to use, but the Holly Street shop is a charming jewel that’s well worth the visit. Once there, manager Sandra Ortega guides guests to favorites. Mignon Chocolates boasts at least 60 flavors of chocolates and truffles, with rotating seasonal varieties. Dark chocolate-dipped candied orange peel, hazelnut truffles and ginger with lime sea salt remain popular choices with regulars. Given everything, is the business sustainable? “We are on survival mode — put it that way,” Joe said. “We’re trying to survive and get out of the tunnel and get back to normal life.” His sister Anoush is on maternity leave and Joe has two children, a 12-year-old daughter and a 10-year-old son. Could Mignon’s next generation be here? Joe didn’t hesitate to answer. “We hope so. We really hope so.” n

BRAZILIAN ACAI BOWLS & JUICE BAR: THE GARZAS OFFER AUTHENTIC ACAI ON HOLLY STREET STORY BY FRIER MCCOLLISTER | PHOTOS BY LUIS CHAVEZ

cai bowls—known as “acai na tigela” in Brazil—feature frozen and mashed berries from the acai palm. Thought to boost energy and known for their antioxidant content and nutritional benefits, acai bowls are reliable fixtures on the local health food landscape. Brazilian Acai Bowls & Juice Bar opened on Dec. 29 in a small, Holly Street storefront. The opening reflects the first Southern California outlet of a family-owned mini-chain, founded and based in Bakersfield. It’s also authentically Brazilian. Lisa and Ismael Garza are the masterminds and co-owners behind Brazilian Acai Bowls & Juice Bar. “Born and raised in Brazil,” Lisa affirmed. “It’s a small town, a beach town: Tramandai. I came to the U.S. when I was 9 years old. Family and food have always been a part of our culture.” Lisa had no background in the food business. After meeting and marrying Ismael, a veteran high school math teacher, Lisa was a homemaker raising their six children, who now range from 14 to 23 years old. “I stayed home while he went to work and raised six kids,” she said. “One day I was offered a job to be a waitress and I just loved the food industry. I just loved talking to the customers and making everyone happy. I just loved that. I was really paying attention to what was going on at the restaurant and moved up to be a manager.” Lisa was being groomed to be general manager, when her grandfather died, and she returned to Brazil in December 2015 for his funeral. “That’s when I started hearing all about the acai,” she said. “I’d heard about acai here in California, but I never really paid attention.” Inspired to do more research on acai during her month-long stay in Brazil, she discovered differences in preparation. “In Brazil, it’s just different. Here they mix it with other fruits to bring volume because acai is so expensive,” she said. “Remember it’s coming from Brazil. So, we wanted to be different. We didn’t care if there was less money in our pockets. We wanted to be truthful and authentic. I’m so glad that when we opened our doors, customers did notice (the difference).” Returning to Bakersfield in January 2016, Lisa approached her husband with the idea of opening the business. “He said, ‘We have a little bit of savings but not a lot.’ So, I look at him and I literally said, ‘Wow, you went to UCLA. You’re very smart. Figure it out.’ Those were my exact words to him.” Ismael did figure it out. Soon enough they found a supplier through Lisa’s previous restaurant contacts and they launched a delivery-only business, taking local orders through their Facebook page. Their acai bowls were a hit, and the couple routinely catered local athletic events. They saved money for their first brick-and-mortar location. Lisa described her and Ismael’s working dynamic. “I’m a go-getter. I’m a daredevil,” she said. “He’s more careful with money. He really thinks before he does something. I’m more like, ‘Let’s go. Let’s do it.’ I’m that kind of person.” When she pressed him to open the first storefront, she recalled, “He said, ‘You’re crazy. We can’t afford it.’ I said, ‘We’re going to do it.’ We got our keys in May 2016 and on Sept. 7, we opened our doors.” The couple opened four under the name Brazilian Muscle Bowls with Lisa’s brother, and another on their own—all in the Bakersfield area. They soon turned their sights toward Southern California. “My husband and I would always come to LA and we just fell in love with Pasadena,” she said. “We loved the location and the area.” After scouting the location on Holly Street, they moved forward. They were handed the keys in October 2019. However, city permitting lagged. “We decided to move (here) in February,” she said. “March came. COVID came. 10 PASADENA WEEKLY | 02.11.21

Owners Ismael Garza and Lisa Garza. Nothing. The city was taking a long time. It did take a while.” Finally, the Garzas’ long-awaited Brazilian Acai Bowls & Juice Bar opened in Pasadena on Dec. 29. A Manhattan Beach location is slated for late spring. “Nothing’s stopping me,” Lisa said. For those unfamiliar with acai bowls, Lisa suggests trying the bako ($9.50, $12 or $14.25), named after the store’s bestseller in Bakersfield. The tart, deep purple acai is concentrated and frozen with the consistency of a rich sorbet. Here, it’s topped with organic granola, sliced banana, strawberries, blueberries, shredded coconut, honey and peanut or almond butter. It’s not excessively sweet, very refreshing and apparently quite healthy. There are nine other bowls with varying combinations of base and toppings, in addition to cold-pressed juices, protein shakes and smoothies. The bowls and juices can also be customized from a list of additional toppings. Lisa pointed to the Incredible Hulk ($10.49) as a popular juice blend, featuring cucumber, apple, kale, spinach, celery, orange, lemon, ginger and cayenne. There is a short list of vegan sandwiches ($7.95) as well as three poke bowl preparations ($11.99 to $13.99) and vegan protein sweets ($5.75 to $9.99). “I definitely want to thank all the customers that have been coming in,” she said. “As a business owner opening during COVID, you sometimes have second thoughts, like, ‘What was I thinking? Should I have come to Pasadena?’ Customers here have been so kind. They give us hope to keep going.” n

CHAKRA INDIAN KITCHEN: SAVORY SOUTH INDIAN SAVVY STORY BY FRIER MCCOLLISTER | PHOTOS BY LUIS CHAVEZ

nion Street between Raymond and Fair Oaks is a bustling dining strip. Now it’s more enticing: Chakra Indian Kitchen opened in December and outdoor dining resumed in Pasadena. Both events are heartening surprises. General manager Rajavanniyan Mayaperumal chats about Chakra Indian Kitchen as a couple enjoy burgers for lunch outside of Slater’s 50/50, behind street barricades, just across the street. The restaurant specializing in authentic south Indian cuisine opened on Dec. 11, just days following the state’s last ban on outdoor dining. As Mayaperumal indicated,
“We’re doing it (outdoor dining) on the patio and sidewalk,” Mayaperumal said. “We can’t put out barricades.” He pointed to the small patio area at their entrance on Raymond and the sidewalk running along Union Street, where two-tops will be placed. On this strip of Union Street, the barricaded dining lane runs on the north side of Union and accommodates patrons from Slater’s 50/50, The Blind Donkey, Perle and Union. Chakra Indian Kitchen occupies the same space that housed Chutney, a fastcasual Indian eatery with a limited and eclectic menu. Mayaperumal confirmed there is no relation between the two restaurants and indicated the difference. “We are really traditional. No fusion. We do real Indian food,” Mayaperumal said. Chakra’s menu is wide ranging and offers all the traditional dishes and preparations from across the subcontinent. From tandooris and vindaloos to curries and paneers, any enthusiast of Indian cuisine will find their favorites here. There are plenty of vegetarian and vegan options as well. The discerning local diner will note the real specialty here are regional preps from south India. Dosas, idlis, vadas and specific regional variations on biryani rice plates are the standouts here. Notably, there are also entrees starring lamb and goat. Beef? Not here. Chakra’s owners and staff are all reliably observant Hindus. South Indian cuisine is noted for its spice and the depth and complexity of its seasoning. Onion pakoras ($8.99) stayed pleasingly crisp in transit as did the gobi Manchurian ($9.99), featuring lightly battered and fried cauliflower florets draped in a mildly spiced and tangy tomato sauce. Goat sukka ($13.99), marinated bonein chunks of goat in a pepper braise, provided cold weather comfort. The meat makes another welcome appearance in the goat dum biryani ($15.99) layered and sauced in saffron basmati rice. Finally, the lamb vindaloo ($15.99) was pronounced to be “the best ever” by a fellow diner. The owners and staff at Chakra are all natives of the south Indian province Tamil Nadu, specifically the area surrounding the metropolis of Chennai. As Chef Satheesh Kumar Madahangopal emerged from his spacious kitchen, he walked through the menu of south Indian specialties. Dosas are long rolled crepes filled with savory combinations of ingredients. The Chakra special masala dosa ($12.99) is a splay of masala-spiced vegetables rolled into a crepe fried to a tender crisp and served with both a spicy pepper dipping sauce as well as a cooling yogurt raita sauce. There are 17 dosa preparations here ($9.99 to $12.99), some served with regional chutneys. For newbies, it’s probably best to ask for guidance in ordering. Idlis (three pieces for $7.99) are another standard south Indian snack. The steamed lentil and rice cakes are served with an array of chutneys and condiments. Vadas ($6.99/ $7.99) come in three varieties, each a riff on the savory lentil doughnut, deep fried and served with a tomato pepper broth. The regional rice biryanis include hyderabadi chicken dum ($13.99) with slow cooked marinated chicken; madras handi goat ($15.99, available weekends only); and dindigul mutton ($15.99) with marinated lamb and “seeraga samba” rice. Ask Madahangopal for his favorite and he points to Chakra special murg masala ($14.99), featuring boneless chicken slow-cooked and served in a mild cilantro sauce. As he explained, it’s the first dish he mastered as an apprentice in the kitchens of a luxury hotel in Chennai. Chakra Indian Kitchen is owned by Dhanalakshmi Venkatesan and her husband, Sakthivel Venkatesan. Chakra is their second restaurant in Southern California, the first being Southern Spice in Lawndale, which opened in 2018 and has remained open for takeout and delivery throughout the pandemic. Pasadena guests to the Lawndale location had begged the Venkatesans to consider bringing their uniquely authentic south Indian cuisine to them. The course of launching Chakra Indian Kitchen here has been predictably fraught with the uncertain timings of the pandemic restrictions and lockdowns. “We signed the lease on March 18, a week after the lockdown,” Dhanalakshmi said. With the hopeful intention of opening in April, the Venkatesans found themselves waiting for a new round of health department inspections. “We were really hoping that by June or July everything would be OK,” she said. “The inspection process continued to lag. We got the OK to open in late September, but, cases were still rising with COVID. We still wanted to open by the end of 2020. We had to start somewhere. We said, ‘We might as well open and see what happens.’” Vedic astrology was considered, and a Hindu priest conducted a ritual puja ceremony to sanctify the space and bless the enterprise. Finally, the Venkatesans opened Chakra Indian Kitchen for business on Dec. 11. Dhanalakshmi is philosophical about the experience and also offers a hopeful prediction, “It’s all up to how God wants to make things happen,” Dhanalakshmi said. “2021 is going to be better than 2020.”n 02.11.21 | PASADENA WEEKLY 11
• ARTS & CULTURE • VIRTUAL VALENTINES: JIM BRICKMAN FINDS INTIMACY IN ZOOM PERFORMANCES BY CHRISTINA FUOCO-KARASINSKI

12 PASADENA WEEKLY | 02.11.21
Jim Brickman, formerly of Studio City, returned to Cleveland for personal and professional reasons.
“I like to do anything that makes people feel more emotional about the way they feel about someone,” he added. “I think so much of what is in my music is what we hope for and what we want things to be.” But Brickman explained his shows aren’t just for those involved in a romantic relationship. Parents and friends can enjoy the music as well. “When I would play these Valentine’s Day shows, I would notice a lot of people say, ‘I don’t have anyone to go with.’ It puts that pressure on reminding somebody they don’t have a valentine that year. “I feel, for me, it’s about love for your family and friends, your community, your kids, your parents. What’s happening now is people who live apart from their parents have been giving the gift of the show to somebody in another town and they see them on Zoom. That’s been kind of cool. I get to hear some of the conversations between them before the show starts like, ‘Hi mom. Happy Valentine’s Day,’ and they’re talking with each other. Other people start talking to them and it’s cool. I feel like that’s a lot of what it’s accomplishing.” n Jim Brickman: Share the Love Live WHEN: Various showtimes Friday, Feb. 12, to Sunday, Feb. 14 WHERE: Digital concert performance TICKETS: jimbrickman.com/share-the-love-experience and, to support Pepperdine, use the code “lovepu” PRICE: $50

ianist-songwriter Jim Brickman has captured the essence of livestreamed shows. After 50 performances over Christmas, Brickman is playing cupid this Valentine’s Day weekend with shows that benefit U.S. theaters, including the Wengler Center for the Arts at Pepperdine University. “Share the Love Live!” will livestream Friday, Feb. 12, to Sunday, Feb. 14. “It’s funny what we all get used to after a while,” he said. “I kind of like this. In some ways, it’s even more intimate. I can actually see people. When I play in a theater, I don’t see people when I look out. It’s all darkness. “I’m also not used to seeing people at their homes. ‘Intimate’ is the only word I can think to use.” He said fans and their families can enjoy the virtual concert experience from the comfort of home, while supporting the arts during this challenging time. Attendees can customize their concert experience with special merchandise or even a personal meet-and-greet with Brickman after the show. Joined by special guests Olivia Newton-John and her daughter, Chloe Lattanzi, Brickman is expected to perform songs like “Love of My Life,” “Destiny,” “Angel Eyes” and “Valentine.” “I always play the hits,” he said. “People can also make a request or dedication when they buy the ticket. “Also, I’m going to have Olivia Newton-John make an appearance. I was on tour with her for a while and we’ve done a lot of music together. She has a new album, and she sang ‘Valentine’ on one of my TV specials.” Brickman’s requests aren’t limited, sometimes, to music. One of his oddest requests — one he did not fulfill — happened at ASU Gammage in Tempe, Arizona. “One person brought a live dove to one of my concerts,” he said. “They wanted me to release the dove when the guy got on his knees to propose. I thought that was pretty odd.” Brickman is a best-selling solo pianist with 22 No.1 albums and 34 Top 20 radio singles in Billboard magazine. He has garnered two Grammy nominations, gospel music’s Dove Award, two SESAC Songwriter of the Year Awards, and the Canadian Country Music Award. He also has a music scholarship named for him by his alma mater, the prestigious Cleveland Institute of Music. Brickman is one of pop-music’s most fascinating success stories. He jumped from a career as a jingle writer of famous tunes for advertising, to reviving the romantic standard of the popular song. His first album release was 1995’s “No Words,” and he has gone on to sell 8 million albums worldwide. He has written three best-selling books, starred in five TV concert specials, and is in the 22nd season of hosting the syndicated radio show, “The Jim Brickman Show.” After living in Studio City for 25 years, Brickman returned to his hometown of Cleveland. “Studio City is definitely where my career was developed,” he said. “It was partly to be closer to my family. My mom’s in Chicago. I thought it would be better to be closer.” Wanting the best for people is just part of Brickman’s mission.
‘THE SAINT I AIN’T’: PASADENA MUSICIAN, FILM COMPOSER BOBBY JOHNSTON’S BOOK DREAMS OF ESCAPE BY BLISS BOWEN
T
here’s a jazzy beat to Pasadena musician and film composer Bobby Johnston’s new book, “The Saint I Ain’t: Stories from Sycamore Street.” Understand, these are not traditional short stories; they are structured with line breaks like poems, linked and inspired by his “high-impact” childhood.
Writing in compact bursts of eloquence from the perspective of his young adult self, Johnston purposely avoids identifying the town he describes in “The Island” as “a small catholic valley/ surrounded by a thick forest of mountains.” Nor does he name the “sinister, brown, fast moving” river snaking ’round the town, though both will likely feel familiar to readers who grew up between the Atlantic shoreline and states in Rust Belt decline. That’s where Johnston lived, poor, in a family of five kids that included a brother who turned him on to bands he wouldn’t have heard otherwise and parents who couldn’t afford medical bills. Playing piano — and hooky, often with matches or mushrooms — became his escape. “Our town was a town where a lot of people could choose to go from high school to college or go into a factory and get a job,” Johnston recalled. “It was the days where a factory person still existed; you could retire and get the gold watch, and you felt proud of the place you worked for and felt part of something. A lot of those corporations moved operations overseas or out of state.” He performed TV show themes in the living room — his “debut concert” — while his father’s friends drank and played cards in the kitchen, mordantly recounted in “Me and Mr. T.” Echoing a rosary cadence, “Elegy for Me” could be a lyric sung by a trauma survivor, while Springsteen echoes through characters such as Father O’Reverend, Harmonica Joe, the dreaded Sister Gosilano (“an infinitely obese,/growling, dictator of a nun/ whose name sounded closer to/ godzilla than it did to god”), and Johnston’s hard-nosed father (“in our house, my father was the law/ and i was the criminal”). “It’s one person’s perspective. But that’s who we were,” Johnston said, readily admitting he was “a tough kid” who inherited his storytelling talents from the father he now feels “nurtured” by. His litany of broken bones, bloody mishaps and humiliations at the hands of school bullies, among others, illuminates the character of a town and leaders that fractured Johnston’s worldview. All the stories in “The Saint I Ain’t” are “based on real experiences,” but in fiction’s tradition of masking the innocent and guilty, the book’s Billy Flynn is a composite of several real-life buddies. “The Island” recounts how one of them “found his exit/ on the banks of the river” with his father’s .357 Magnum. “That was a best friend,” Johnston said, confirming the story’s autobiographical roots. “We were pallbearers at 16 years old. When you’re Catholic, it’s an open casket funeral, and he had shot himself in the head. It was a very visceral, graphic experience for 16-year-olds. We all went through Catholic school and high school and stayed friends … a couple of us felt like it would have been us if it wasn’t him. You can tell from the stories that I was close to that end myself, and [it gave me] an impetus to just get out of there and define my own potential and my own future.” A stint in the Air Force offered one way to see the world; after being stationed in Vegas, Johnston moved to the Pasadena area in 1990. For a while, he says, he road-dogged 30 weeks a year, playing clubs; for eight years he worked
Pasadena musician and film composer Bobby Johnston’s new book is “The Saint I Ain’t: Stories from Sycamore Street.” as a kindergarten associate teacher in Pasadena while making music at night. He’s been scoring films for two decades — mostly independent releases (“Wristcutters: A Love Story”) and documentaries such as Laura Gabbert’s widely praised “City of Gold” (about late LA food critic Jonathan Gold). Johnston relies on his multi-instrumental skills in the studio, though he strives for minimalism as a composer and writer. “I can be more expressive and creative, musically and with writing, if I have some parameters,” he explained. “I purposely structured (the book) like poetry for that reason — to try to do as much as possible with as little as possible. A lot of the form of it is almost as if this character came across an abandoned typewriter and just threw his story out there. I wanted it to be like a confession, almost, or a sort of witness.” His decision to arrange stories on the page like lyric fragments allows him to impose a kind of order on past turmoil and reach for grace. He sat on them for years, when his characters still answered to their true names and “the trauma was too close.” It was easy not to think about writing once his film-composing career gained momentum, but when “Wristcutters” director Goran Dukic encouraged him to publish his poems, Johnston suggested they write a screenplay based on them instead. They wrote a TV pilot too. Then COVID hit. He wrote five or six more stories and “pulled it together as a collection.” He’s also made and scored videos for some pieces from the book and says he “wouldn’t mind filming a proper short for these.” He’s working on another set of stories even as he nervously wonders how his hometown will respond to “The Saint I Ain’t”; so far, feedback’s been good. That matters because, as cathartic as they are, he didn’t share his stories to point fingers or lament his past. “You can’t really regret what made you who you are,” he said philosophically. “The stories make the cut if they have a poignant or humorous payoff. That’s the point — hopefully, they have some universal poignancy.” To learn more, visit bobbyjohnstonauthor.com, bobbyjohnston.com and fomitepress.com. 02.11.21 | PASADENA WEEKLY 13

t the start of the COVID-19 lockdown, jazz singer Serafia and long-term boyfriend Dan Kattan found their gigs canceled. They got resourceful and founded Sidewalk Singers, a socially distanced form of singing telegrams. “We didn’t see a future in sight,” said Serafia, who lives in the Noho Arts District. “It just popped into our mind one day to revive the old art of singing telegrams. It’s socially distanced, naturally. We had to come up with a name that’s socially distanced. It just fell together, honestly.” Performing all around the Los Angeles area and beyond to Long Beach and Oxnard, Sidewalk Singers kicked off their project by promoting through word of mouth. It spread like wildfire. “People bought into it really quickly,” she said. “People have told us that it was great because it’s a great way to celebrate a birthday or anniversary.” Some of Sidewalk Singers’ best gigs were in Downtown LA, Pasadena and Beverly Hills, according Serafia. “We’ve been performing a lot in Downtown LA,” she said. “We did a proposal in Downtown LA. “We were very busy this Christmas. We performed for Jane Fonda and her group. She lives in this cute little community close to Beverly Hills. She was dancing and brought her dogs out. We sang ‘9 to 5.’” A portion of Sidewalk Singers’ telegrams benefit the revival of the Noho Arts District. “Our community has more recording studios and theaters than any other place west of the Mississippi. They’re all super historic,” she said. “We also saw all the lines at the LA Food Bank. We thought there was an immediate need. We’re giving a portion of our money to those two charities. To date, it’s about $6,200.” Recently, Sidewalk Singers expanded to Austin, where she and Kattan spent a majority of their adult life. She lived in Monterrey for 16 years and Austin for 16 years. Plans are to carry Sidewalk Singers to Arizona as well. “We want to continue our mission to be community based,” she said. “We want to choose our charities in other states. We just want to pick charities we really believe in and continue this until the wheels fall off. We’d like to get other musicians involved, too, and revive the lost art of singing telegrams.” The duo is making a big push for Valentine’s Day, and they will be featured on the Hollywood Broadway website for the holiday. They have several love songs on their list, which is extensive. “If someone wanted to request a specific song that’s not on our list, they can request it 72 hours in advance,” she said. “We’ll learn a specific song. “The other day we did a 50th wedding anniversary. The husband was a Vietnam War veteran. We did ‘Leaving on a Jet Plane’ by John Denver and surprised them with that. Their daughter purchased the singing telegram. We’ll learn your special song if it’s super important. We have a lot of telegrams like that. It will make you cry. It’s really emotional for us, too. I have to wear sunglasses sometimes.” An award-winning singer, Serafia has performed around the United States, including the national anthem twice for the Dodgers, and other professional sports teams. Kattan is a singer-guitarist, who has released a handful of albums. The duo had their first tour to Chicago planned in March 2020. “We’re very driven and very creative,” she said. “We’re thinking of new ways to do music, and this stumbled into our lives. I don’t promote my own music anymore. I’m really, really focused on Sidewalk Singers.”
