hwatukee. It is a special place to live, as anyone who resides there will tell you. Much more than a sleepy bedroom community, Ahwatukee is a bustling hub of activity comprised of singles, couples and families that embrace the unique lifestyle it offers. The community has grown steadily over the past few decades and the opening of Loop 202/South Mountain freeway next year will assist in continuing that trend. The incorporation of the new freeway will bring muchanticipated transportation convenience to the entirety of Ahwatukee, which has been somewhat thought of as the “World’s Longest Cul de Sac.” Ahwatukee is adept at managing change. It has done it for nearly 50 years as it morphed from a retirement community with one interchange at Interstate 10, and it will undoubtedly continue to roll with the change. The community thrived as family neighborhoods opened. I-10 interchanges were built at Warner and Ray roads and improved at Chandler Boulevard. Apartments brought a new socio-economic demographic to the growing area. Now, there are plenty of Teslas and Beamers on the streets and the 85048 zip code boasts some of the Valley of the Sun’s priciest estates. What has not changed are the root values that attracted tens of thousand of people since the 1970s, keeping it a place they want to inhabit and share with visitors. 6

It’s a small town that is proud to be a part of the nation’s fifth-largest city. Although it is part of Phoenix, being tucked behind the mountain and geographically in its own space separate from the big city has always given Ahwatukee a small-town feel and a close-knit sense of community. There’s the annual Easter Parade. Ahwatukee Little League. Kimberly Lewis’ “Nutcracker.” The Festival of Lights. The Chili Cook-off. The Ahwatukee Bowl high school football clash between Mountain Pointe and Desert Vista, which after 22 years is even at 11-11. Recreational opportunities are abundant with bicycling/jogging/hiking trails through the adjacent native desert in the foothills of South Mountain Park. Ahwatukee is also home to golf courses, providing novice and avid golfers alike the chance to get out and enjoy the landscape and our famous year-round sunshine. Both courses are a fantastic offering for low handicappers playing the tips and those who just like to hit the links on the occasional weekend. Residents choose Ahwatukee for many reasons, one of which is because it is beautiful. All it takes is a look at a breathtaking crimson sunset over the mountains to sell a home. Are you a foodie? It’s no longer necessary to leave “The Tuke” for fine dining. The restaurant scene is vibrant because it is now very competitive. There is plenty of everything, especially Italian, Thai and sushi. Every

month, more and more restaurants with diverse culinary offerings are moving into the area. For shop-a-holics, if you can’t find it in a locally-owned shop in Ahwatukee, all you have to do is go over the freeway hump on Ray to Casa Paloma, or make the short drive on the 202 to Chandler Fashion Center, or go south on 40th a couple of miles to Phoenix Premium Outlets. The schools – public and private – are great. Higher education at the community college and university levels are minutes away via relatively easy drives on a freeway. Ahwatukee has so much going for it. Easy to Sky Harbor. Close to Arizona State. Not that bad to downtown Phoenix. If you don’t want to drive, there’s a Park-and-Ride bus to downtown that connects to the Valley-wide bus system and light rail. Yes, Ahwatukee has grown and changed, and that’s going to continue. It’s different, but still great. It has not lost its beauty, charm and community character. Over time, its residents have come to learn that what “Ahwatukee” really means is “home.”

ozens of charities, social clubs and other organizations for young and old alike thrive in Ahwatukee, offering an array of volunteer opportunities as well as the chance to make new friends. From scouting to American Legion Post 64 – Ahwatukee’s only military service organization – to women’s and faith-based groups to service and mentoring entities, residents have almost unlimited choices when it comes to finding like-minded people who live in their community. Many of these organizations post their meetings and activities in the Ahwatukee Foothills News as well as on various community-centric social media sites. Chances are, as well, that people who connect with one community organization likely will find leads to others. Among the oldest, most established organizations are the Ahwatukee Foothills Chamber of Commerce, the Festival of Lights Committee, the Kiwanis Club of Ahwatukee and the Legionnaires post. The Kiwanis Club meets 7:30 a.m. Thursdays at Biscuits Restaurant on the southwestern corner of Elliot Road and 48th Street. In addition to weekly special speakers and a chance to have one of the best breakfasts in town, members engage in various charitable endeavors – particularly those that help teens in foster care. The club also puts on the annual Easter Parade, one of Ahwatukee’s signature events. The Festival of Lights Committee for more than two decades is responsible for the brilliant display of one million lights on the median of Chandler Boulevard 10

between 24th Street and Desert Foothills Parkway. To pay for those lights, it puts on two of the biggest community events of the year: the Kick-Off Party, a family-friendly all-day festival held the Saturday after Thanksgiving; and the Wine and Beer Tasting Festival, a springtime, adultsonly evening of fun, food and games. The Chamber offers business owners an opportunity to meet other business owners with a stake in the community. There also are three BNI groups for business owners and professionals. The Ahwatukee Foothills Family YMCA’s Outreach Program for Ahwatukee Seniors, commonly called Y OPAS, offers help to seniors who can’t get around on their own and a wonderful opportunity for people who want to volunteer a few hours a week to help them. Its signature service is transporting seniors in the community to medical appointments, for grocery shopping and even small social occasions. Volunteers can devote as much time as they want to driving these seniors around – and making new friends. Broader charitable groups abound, such as the 100+ Women Who Care Valley of the Sun. Chances to make new friends are also plentiful, with groups like the Ahwatukee Republican Women and Ahwatukee Foothills Friends and Neighbors. You only have to reach out, and there’s someone in Ahwatukee ready to extend a hand in friendship and camaraderie.

rizona is Ground Zero in the school-choice movement, and nowhere is that reflected more than in Ahwatukee. A multitude of options abound, from pre-K through the turning of the tassel at high school graduation. Start with public schools serving the village. The Kyrene School District, for pre-K-8, always wins bond and override elections and then puts the money to good use. The district continues to enjoy a strong academic reputation, with 15 of its 25 schools holding A+ School of Excellence designation from the Arizona Educational Foundation. Parental involvement is welcome and strongly encouraged. The Tempe Union High School District has Mountain Pointe and Desert Vista within Ahwatukee.

Mountain Pointe and Desert Vista traditionally produce senior classes that are awarded millions of dollars in scholarships. Their students win academic honors, such as National Merit Scholarships and Flinn Scholarships. The sports teams always are in the running for championships. SCHOOLS & YOUTH edge of Ahwatukee, believes that all students deserve a gifted education, and it provides multiple opportunities for students to shine. St. John Bosco, a private Catholic school in Ahwatukee, serves pre-K-8. Ahwatukee has a plethora of other church-based and three Montessori schools for younger students. There is plenty for youngsters to do in “The Tuke,” as well. The Ahwatukee Foothills Family YMCA is state of the art and sponsors youth leagues in several sports. Phoenix Parks and Recreation provides classes and programs for kids. The Kyrene elementary schools offer Kids Club after school. Facilities such as My Gym Ahwatukee cater to the very small ones. Makutu’s Island and Main Event

Entertainment are fun houses just across the freeway when the kids get a bit bigger. Are the kids into music? Music Makers and School of Rock call Ahwatukee home. Do they dance? Kimberly Lewis’ Dance Studio 111 in Ahwatukee not only has classes for all levels it also produces Ahwatukee’s annual holiday tradition, “The Nutcracker,” now nearly two decades strong. Do they act? Give Ahwatukee Childrens Theatre a visit. Can they hit? Ahwatukee Little League went to the Little League World Series a few years back and continues to be competitive for state titles. There’s plenty of fresh air and sunshine that beckon you to outdoor activities, except mid-May to mid-October. Ahwatukee is loaded with parks equipped for a multitude of recreational, calorie-burning fun. Put on some sunscreen and sunglasses and go for a hike, run or mountain-bike ride on the trails through the desert foothills in South Mountain Park. Even many of our streets and sidewalks come with challenging hills for a brisk walk or jog. Bear in mind that everything that goes up will come down. Even your weight. Most of the big HOAs in “The Tuke” offer heated pools and Jacuzzis for residents. Go dog-paddle a few laps. When you’re done with whatever made you sweat, you can hit one of Ahwatukee’s many fine juice bars or smoothie joints and wash it all down with something containing protein, greens and vitamins that’s said to be darn good for you after something like this. Ahwatukee generally is a healthy place. Get up early most mornings, especially on weekends, and you see people, often accompanied by their kids or dogs or both, out and about. There are all kinds of personal trainers and fitness gurus to advise and punish you. Ahwatukee boasts many outstanding gyms, among them a state-of-the-art family YMCA with loads of youth-league sports, LA Fitness, Mountainside Fitness and EOS Fitness (formerly Gold’s Gym). And just over the freeway hump are Planet Fitness, Lifetime Fitness and OrangeTheory. Some gyms have classes led by trained professionals. Others provide the weights, machines and equipment and then let you lead your own exercise endeavors. There are smaller boutique gyms, too, scattered about the village. Ahwatukee has plenty of bike shops (Global Bikes, Curbside Cyclery, Bike Masters), sporting goods and outdoors-equipment stores (Big 5, and just across the freeway Dick’s and REI), and golf-equipment (Golf Galaxy and course pro shops) – golf is a huge sport in “The Tuke” with challenging courses, lots of tee times and great weather to keep golfers in the swing of things. Dogs ease anxiety

at Foothills Family Dental

entophobia – a fear of dentists or dental procedures – is a real and treatable fear according to the American Psychiatric Association. So, Foothills Family Dental, marking its 24th year in the same Ahwatukee location at the northwest corner of E. Chandler BoulevaRd. and Desert Foothills Parkway, is easing the anxiety that a trip to the dentist might bring. Meet Mia and Bella, two mini Golden Doodles owned by Dr. Anita Marra and her husband-office manager, Bob Marra, who have lived in Ahwatukee for 26 years, raising two daughters. A Golden Doodle is a golden retriever-poodle mix that is hypoallergenic and doesn’t shed. The two dogs were born in September 2016, and once they turned a year old, the Marras began a lengthy

process to have them registered as therapy dogs. “My husband Bob and I adopted the pair as puppies and worked with them on manners and appropriate behaviors with the idea of taking them into our community to volunteer as therapy dogs,” said Dr. Marra. “After researching, we found the Alliance of Therapy Dogs organization. They help train, test, register and insure therapy dogs all over the country to go out and volunteer. So, when Bella and Mia were a year old, we started the process,” she said. The alliance, founded in 1990, provides a testing process that starts with assuring that the owners and dogs develop a good relationship, and that the canines have the right temperament for therapy work. HEALTH & FITNESS Then, an ATD “tester/observer” monitors the owner and dog during three visits to facilities, including two medical clinics. During these supervised visits, the T/O observes, and gives advice and guidance. There are at least 15 tester/observers within 26 miles of Ahwatukee, including Carrol ColasaRd.o, of Mesa, the current vice-president and an alliance member since 2008. Mia and Bella were tested at BannerUniversity Medical Center in Phoenix in the fall of 2017. By Christmas, they were done after a veterinarian certified their fecal exams for the last year were negative and that they were up to date on all vaccines, including rabies. “Once accepted, you and your therapy dogs are ready to share smiles and joy,” said Dr. Marra adding that the ATD registration and membership also provides liability insurance. “We like to give back to our community,” said Dr. Marra, who has been in practice for 31 years. “We started talking about having our dogs interact with our patients,

and said, ‘Why not bring them to the office?’” “In January, the Alliance of Therapy Dogs made an additional insurance policy available to its members that allows us to take our trained therapy dogs to work,” she added. Dr. Marra had seen the benefits of therapy dogs with chilDr.en and adults, and felt it would be beneficial to her dental patients as well. Now, her patients have the option to invite Bella or Mia to join them during their dental procedures. “I’ve been overwhelmed by the response of our patients to our dogs. Both anxious patients and those without dental anxiety are requesting them. Many patients have even bonded with Bella or Mia to the point where they request a specific dog for their next appointment,” she said. “It’s well documented that animals can provide comfort and decrease anxiety, and we are thrilled to be able to have them available both for our patients and the community at large,” she added. “If someone wants a dog, we bring them out. People love it, even those people

who don’t usually like dogs. Our patients have really responded to them.” Krista Dearing, a 15-year Ahwatukee resident, said she recently was going through several procedures and opted to have either 20-pound Bella or 17-pound Mia on her lap as she lay in the dental chair. “It mitigates the nervousness,” she confessed. “Frankly, I dislike going to the dentist, so it’s been perfect. I’m almost 60 so there’s always something that needs done and I like that they bring out the little helpers.” She added she has been a patient of Foothills Family Dental “not only because they have therapy dogs but because she and her husband are like family, and (Dr. Marra) is extremely good at what she does.” Ahwatukee resident Carol Rollins concurred, saying Dr. Marra tries “to make the patient as comfortable as possible.” “Oh my gosh, the dogs,” she said. “They’re just fabulous. They’re so comforting. I think when you’re nervous, they kind of take your mind off what you’re having done.” Rollins confided her adult daughter Carly Rollins “is the biggest baby going when it comes to going to the dentist, and she loves the dogs.” The Marras take the dogs elsewhere to provide pet therapy. “Rather than traveling to downtown hospital sites, we’re reaching out to our community,” she said. “We’re interested in volunteering with our dogs in schools, senior facilities, care centers, libraries, anywhere, really, where we could provide comfort.” “We like to give back to our community,” said Dr. Marra, who’s been in practice 31 years. “We opened Foothills Family Dental 24 years ago and Ahwatukee is an amazing place, and we’re very blessed to call it home.”

She treats all aspects of general cardiology in office and hospital setting and has been involved with CHF clinic, TAVR and multiple research trials. hat’ll it be tonight? Well, let’s see. How about Italian? There’s Bell’ Italia, Va Bene, Caffe Boa, Arrivaderci, Trattoria D’Amico and now La Stalla, for starters. You won’t go wrong with any of them. Rather have sushi? Try Sakana, Sushi Ken, RA, Sakura, Gin Ban, or the hot new place, Sushi Nakano, which is getting rave reviews. It’s small but it might be the best of them all, so if you want a table, get there before sundown. They’re all splendid practitioners of the art. Maybe it’s Thai that you’re hungry for. Taste of Thai, Tai Basil and Arroy Thai are sure to please. Feeling like Chinese? Leave the Shih Tzu at home and visit Mr. Chaos’ Asian Bistro, Great Wok or Green Tea Bistro. Or order takeout, and then even the Shih Tzu gets a taste of the action. Ahwatukee has grown from a place where a good dinner was at least a 15-minute drive away to a place where people across the Valley now come to eat, where even the prim and proper can’t help but join The Clean Plate Club. Some of us deliberately have avoided living in restaurant cities like San Francisco and New Orleans for fear of overindulging, but the budding restaurant scene in “The Tuke” now features many culinary temptations. Its restaurant scene is diverse and exciting. Best of all, Ahwatukee residents will never experience a shortage of culinary choices. Long gone are the days when the best in-Tukee choice was McDonald’s or Taco Bell. Speaking of Mexican food, the Valley has long been the envy of the nation with its authentic Mexican cuisine and Ahwatukee features some fabulous choices. The best Mexican places often are the small mom-and-pops, where ordering is done at the counter or over the phone. Los Taquitos and Burrito Company are just two of the familyowned gems that dot the village landscape. And fast-food spot Papa Chevors is right in that must-dine mix, too. Ahwatukee is not just a good place to enjoy dinner. Bagel Nosh, Odelay Bagel, Biscuits, Hillside Spot (also open for lunch and dinner) and the newcomer, EarlyBaker, are fine places to start the day. For a fuller menu, try getting a table at Snooze. It’s worth the wait, especially with seasonal temperature now favoring a spot 56

on the patio. There are many other small, locally-owned gems, including Pomegranate Café, with its vegan and glutenfree offerings; Perfect Pair Bistro, dishing up American comfort food; Star of India, where chicken tikka masala is the real star; Ezekiel’s, a relaxed establishment where as good as the fried chicken, catfish and soul-food entrees are, the side dishes steal the show; and the Melting Pot, an upscale fondue chain restaurant with an impressive wine list (bring your wallet). Ahwatukee is also home to many fabulous pizza joints and to be fair, you should give them all a shot. Each pizza place has its own special pizza, crust or sauce, and they all deserve a taste. And if at the end of the day you still have a little energy left, wrap the evening on the patio of My Wine Cellar or The Living Room, or give the newbie, The Whining Pig, a try. By the time you get there after a fine dinner-night out in Ahwatukee, you might well be a whining pig yourself. Unsnap the drawers, order a bev and call it a day. It might still be a bit south of Scottsdale in more ways than one, but “The Tuke” now holds its own against anyplace else in the Valley as a dining destination. Bon appetit and cheers, Ahwatukee.

A community rich in Faith

hwatukee is rich in faith, partly as the result of the work of the late Rev. Don Schneider, who became pastor of the community’s first church, Mountain View Lutheran, in 1980. He made it a launching pad of sorts for several other churches in the community, including Corpus Christi Catholic Church, by extending the use of its premises to their fledging congregations. As Ahwatukee historian Martin Gibson told the Ahwatukee Foothills News, “As other religions’ parishes sprang up, Mountain View’s doors were open to Baptists, Catholics, Episcopalians – all had a place of worship during their parishes’ infancies, thanks to the generosity of the church. Mountain View Lutheran Church was instrumental in fostering a sense of community in Ahwatukee.” Ahwatukee also is home to Rev. Deborah Hutterer, who in September 2018 was installed as the sixth bishop of the Grand Canyon Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. She is responsible for overseeing 89 congregations serving 44,000 members spread across

ike so many people who commute to work each day, your mind might drift to a pile of work awaiting you at your desk, or you might be considering some of the countless things there are to see, do and experience in your new town. There are so many ways to get involved with your Ahwatukee community and meet others who share your interests. Ahwatukee newcomers don’t have to look far to find groups of folks with similar interests. That won’t necessarily ease a commute, but finding satisfying leisure-time activities in a beautiful locale can make a stressful work life far more tolerable. A good place to start after a particularly bruising week is comedy. There are no brick-and-mortar comedy clubs in “The Tuke,” but there are comedy clubs that give periodic performances in Ahwatukee venues. Find one and go yuk it up. Maybe boxing is a good escape after the week you just had. Put on the gloves and have at it. If you’re into it, there’s very likely a community of people in the village who also are into it. There are mom’s clubs and women’s clubs. Gays and singles have groups they can join. For writers and book readers, join the conversation. Maybe you just enjoy a good lunch. Other people in Ahwatukee do, too, and there are many places where lunch groups meet to eat. Let’s say that politics is your thing. The donkeys and elephants both have Ahwatukee-based organizations where you can go commiserate about the opposite animal’s doings in various legislative bodies. Maybe that will even spur you to run for office. Before you do, it might be wise to join a Toastmaster’s club in Ahwatukee to brush up on your public speaking. Ready to try to make change? Get involved with your HOA, the largest being Ahwatukee Board of

Management and Mountain Park Ranch. Just be ready to referee whether a home’s paint color is correct for the neighborhood, if the owner needs to address weeds in the front yard, or whether it’s OK to leave a portable basketball hoop up in the driveway overnight. Being on an HOA gives you a chance to meet your neighbors and have a say-so in what goes on right where you live. If your interest is business and you are adept at networking, or if you’d like to learn to be more adept at networking, join the village Chamber of Commerce. It’s likely to be a mutually beneficial experience. Arizona is such a beautiful state and at least half of the year there is no better place for outdoor activities. Ahwatukee is onboard, with running, hiking, camping and bicycling clubs. Perhaps you’re finished with the day-to-day drudgery that those who still must work endure daily. Draw a deep breath, look at the mountains and decide where you want to play golf or pickleball today. Groups in “The Tuke” make that easy for seniors. CHILI COOK-OFF AND CAR SHOW

The Ahwatukee Board of Management sponsors an annual Chili CookOff in March or April at its headquarters on the northwestern corner of Warner Road and 48th Street. It is one of only two ranked chili cookoffs in Arizona that can qualify winners for the National Chili Cook-Off. WINE & BEER TASTING FESTIVAL

To help pay for the annual holiday Festival of Lights along Chandler Boulevard, the committee that organizes it holds two fundraisers. This is the adult one, generally held in April before it gets too hot. Local vendors supply the food and the band always rocks.

EASTER PARADE

The Kiwanis Club of Ahwatukee has been organizing the annual Easter Parade down 48th Street from Warner Road to Elliot for four decades on the day before Easter, offering a colorful array of floats and costumes.

FOL KICK-OFF PARTY

Longtime local dance instructor Kimberly Lewis started the Ahwatukee version of the Christmas staple more than 20 years ago, and for three shows, usually the third weekend of December at Desert Vista High School, a huge cast wearing handsewn costumes puts on a spectacular show.

For more than two decades, the varsity football teams of Desert Vista and Mountain Pointe high schools face off on the gridiron, rotating at each other’s stadiums in late September or early October. It really is Ahwatukee’s own Super Bowl.

The second annual fundraiser for the Festival of Lights is a family-friendly day-long party at Desert Foothills Park on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Games, bands, contests, vendors, food and much more keep the party going to the grand finale: a parade of holiday-decorated motorcycles escorting Santa to the stage.

On the Friday after Thanksgiving, Santa Claus has been arriving by helicopter for more than 25 years on the southwestern corner of Elliot Road and 48th Street, courtesy of Millie’s Hallmark. Bands, choirs and lots of kids are on hand to welcome in Christmas.

Each year, the festival attracts 15,000 to 20,000 people to Chandler Boulevard between Desert Foothills Parkway and 24th Street. The festival has been a tradition since 1996. The lights are on display from 6 to 11 p.m. Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day.

The Ahwatukee Farmers Market, held on ABM grounds on the northwestern corner of Warner Road and 48th Street isn’t so much an event as an institution. It runs every Sunday morning and attracts hundreds of people in search of fruit, vegetables and handmade crafts.

Look for Esperanza Lutheran Church’s annual snow spectacular in December. The church carts in several tons of snow and turns its parking lot into a winter wonderland complete with carolers and hot chocolate.
