Plans that Work!
To everyone who lives here,
Ahwatukee means home By Alison Stanton
W
elcome to Ahwatukee! To help newcomers to this beautiful community, let’s start off with a quick lesson in how to pronounce the name: It’s Ah-Wah-TOO-Key. Next, to answer a question that you will probably get over and over from your friends and relatives in other states, the word “Ahwatukee” doesn’t seem to mean anything specific. Granted, there has been a rumor circulating around for years that the name apparently was a Crow Nation translation for the Spanish phrase “Casa de Sueños” or “House of Dreams.” However, historians who have researched this claim have decided this is not the case. But no worries—even if you cannot share a specific meaning of Ahwatukee’s name, you can definitely let others know what you love about living here. And, as it turns out, there are plenty of reasons that Ahwatukee is such a desirable place to reside. According to the Arizona Department of Health Services, almost 86,000 people live in Ahwatukee. Although it is technically part of Phoenix—which is one of the largest cities in the country—it does not have that big-city vibe. In fact, residents who live here will often say Ahwatukee resembles Mayberry much more than Manhattan. In Ahwatukee, which was once referred to as the “World’s Largest Cul-de-Sac,” neighbors get to know each other. Quick trips to the grocery store to grab bread and milk often turn into marathon chat sessions with the numerous friends who are also shopping there. Head to a local coffee shop for a cup of inspiration or to a family-owned restaurant for lunch and plenty of familiar faces will probably be there, too. This small-town feel means Ahwatukee residents have the best of both worlds: life in a family-friendly and welcoming community that feels more relaxed than rat race—all with easy access to everything the Phoenix metropolitan area has to offer. 6
AHWATUKEE FOOTHILLS NEWS NEWCOMERS GUIDE
Having said this, please do not think Ahwatukee is lacking in things to do or places to go. If you enjoy eating out, the community boasts a wide selection of top-notch restaurants that feature a number of cuisines and menus that cater to a variety of dietary needs. In the mood for Mexican, Italian, sushi or just an amazing sandwich? Residents won’t have to venture out of the community to find these choices and many more. For shopaholics, Ahwatukee also offers a great variety of stores including nationally known retailers and smaller boutiques. The shopping centers at 48th Street and Ray Road are always busy, as are plenty of other stores throughout the community. It also takes a few minutes to go south on 40th Street a couple of miles to the Phoenix Premium Outlets, to head east on Ray Road over the I-10 freeway to Casa Paloma shopping center or make the super quick drive to Chandler Fashion Center, which is off the Loop 202 freeway. Speaking of the Loop 202, the expansion project for the freeway is well underway, and when it’s finished it is anticipated to help make commuting out of Ahwatukee even easier. In other words, that largest cul-de-sac nickname is quickly becoming outdated. Ahwatukee is also home to a number of community events that take place during the year, all of which help contribute to that small-town feel residents cherish. The annual Easter Parade is a classic example, with high school bands and floats aplenty. Dance Studio 111 puts on amazing performances of “The Nutcracker” every year, and students and parents alike cheer on their favorite high school football team during the yearly meeting of Desert Vista and Mountain Pointe High Schools in the “Tukee Bowl.” The Festival of Lights kicks off the holiday season with a huge party in Desert Foothills Park which culminates in the annual lighting of the cacti and trees along Chandler Boulevard with thousands of beautiful white lights. Speaking of parks, Ahwatukee has plenty of them, many of which feature walking/biking/jogging trails and
colorful playground equipment for the kids. It’s extremely easy to take advantage of the gorgeous sunny weather and head out for some exercise, whether it’s at a park, a local neighborhood greenbelt or a nearby hiking trail. As you speak with your new neighbors and ask them what they enjoy about living here, you might also hear “the outstanding school system.” If you share your home with any number of kiddos, you can rest assured that what your new friends are telling you is true. As part of the Kyrene and Tempe Union High school districts, Ahwatukee has plenty of outstanding elementary, middle and high schools serving its youngest residents. There are also charter schools with great reputations all their own, for families who are interested in other options for their children. Of course, no discussion about what makes Ahwatukee special would be complete without mentioning its many lovely homes and neighborhoods. Like the restaurants, shops and schools, there is truly something for everyone here in terms of housing—from well-maintained apartments and condos to family homes and large, luxurious mansions. In fact, some of the spendiest real estate in the Valley of the Sun can be found right here in Ahwatukee. Singles, couples and families of all sizes can easily find the home of their dreams here in Ahwatukee. Many of the homes are located in specific neighborhoods like Lakewood, Mountain Park Ranch, Tapestry Canyon and Ahwatukee Equestrian Estates. All of this brings us back to one of the original questions: the alleged meaning of Ahwatukee. While the word may not officially mean some variation on the phrase “House of Dreams,” you will probably understand why this urban legend stuck around for so long. Ahwatukee is a friendly, scenic and outstanding place to live. The quality of life is high, and the neighbors are friendly and welcoming. For you, and the tens of thousands of others who are proud to live here, Ahwatukee truly does mean “home.”

Great schools and activities make
Ahwatukee great for families
A
rizona is Ground Zero in the school-choice movement, and nowhere is that reflected more than in Ahwatukee. A multitude of options abound, from pre-K through the turning of the tassel at high school graduation. Start with public schools serving the village. The Kyrene School District, for pre-K-8, always wins bond and override elections and then puts the money to good use. The district continues to enjoy a strong academic reputation, with 15 of its 25 schools holding A+ School of Excellence designation from the Arizona Educational Foundation. Parental involvement is welcome and strongly encouraged. The Tempe Union High School District has Mountain Pointe and Desert Vista within Ahwatukee. Mountain Pointe and Desert Vista traditionally produce senior classes that are awarded millions of dollars in scholarships. Their students win academic honors, such as National Merit Scholarships and Flinn Scholarships. The sports teams always are in the running for championships. Band and debate are the pride of Desert Vista and the drama groups in both schools are topnotch. The campuses bear a healthy, diverse mixture of socioeconomic backgrounds. Some parents choose to send their kids to private Brophy Prep and Xavier Prep in downtown Phoenix, or to Seton Catholic in Chandler. Some go to Ahwatukee’s charter high school, Horizon Honors. Horizon Honors, a charter school on the southern edge of Ahwatukee, believes that all students deserve a gifted education, and it provides multiple opportunities for students to shine. St. John Bosco, a private Catholic school in Ahwatukee, serves pre-K-8. Ahwatukee has a plethora of other church-based and three Montessori schools for younger students. There is plenty for youngsters to do in “The Tuke,” as well. The Ahwatukee Foothills Family YMCA is state of the art and sponsors youth leagues in several sports. Phoenix Parks and Recreation provides classes and programs for kids. The Kyrene elementary schools offer Kids Club after school. Facilities such as My Gym Ahwatukee cater to the very small ones. Makutu’s Island and Main Event Entertainment are fun houses just across the freeway when the kids get a bit bigger. Are the kids into music? Music Makers and School of Rock call Ahwatukee home. Do they dance? Kimberly Lewis’ Dance Studio 111 in Ahwatukee not only has classes for all levels it also produces Ahwatukee’s annual holiday tradition, “The Nutcracker,” now nearly two decades strong. Do they act? Give Ahwatukee Childrens Theatre a visit. Can they hit? Ahwatukee Little League went to the Little League World Series a few years back and continues to be competitive for state titles. Great schools and great activities for kids are prerequisites to great places to raise a family. Ahwatukee more than qualifies for that.

Kyrene School District It is our mission to enrich the lives of every child we are blessed to teach; COME GROW WITH US! “My daughter has been attending God’s Garden Preschool for over a year and I have been more than happy with the care my daughter has been receiving. God’s Garden Preschool provides sensitive and responsive care. The teachers act as important attachment figures, setting the stage for developing strong positive relationships with others. My daughter is safe, loved, and protected. If the heart feels good, then the brain can learn. My daughter wants to come to school and she is very attached to the teachers in her classroom. The teachers create an environment that is responsive to the needs of all children enrolled. It is very personalized, and my daughter has grown so much. Her language and social emotional skills have exploded in the last year! She is sharing with friends and her self-confidence is through the roof! The Director is very involved; she conducts observations and assessments and provides teachers with feedback so they can grow and improve
on a continual basis. As an educator myself, I am very particular about the type of care that my daughter receives, and I would highly recommend God’s Garden to all my friends and family.” ~Yaneth Laird Ahwatukee! BEST of 2014 Ahwatukee Foothills News

Keystone Montessori:
25 years and counting By Keystone Montessori
K
eystone Montessori opened 25 years ago with a vision to provide an authentic Montessori education to Ahwatukee-area children. From a single classroom of 13 children in 1995, Keystone has grown and expanded to its current 5-acre campus with 12 classrooms and 290 students. Located at 1025 E. Liberty Lane, the school guides children ages 15 months to 15 years. “Through hard-working and dedicated Montessori educators and an incredibly supportive community, Keystone provides a foundation for a lifetime of learning that encourages individuals to reach their unique human potential,” said Laura Hertzler, head of school. Dr. Maria Montessori’s principles are found in classrooms centered around the child. Lessons are presented individually and in small groups. Students are free to progress at their own pace and are given opportunities to practice, review and move forward based on their own capabilities. Dr. Montessori’s philosophy views the child as being naturally eager for knowledge and capable of initiating learning in a supportive, thoughtfully prepared environment. Specially trained and certified Montessori guides lead each class at Keystone, and they strive to inspire students to develop a passion for learning in an environment which nurtures independence, creativity and confidence. Keystone’s programs include the bilingual toddler community (ages 15 months to 3 years), the bilingual children’s house (ages 3-6), the charter elementary (ages 6-9) and the adolescent charter program (ages 12-15). Keystone is accepting applications for the bilingual children’s house. KEYSTONE MONTESSORI SCHOOL 1025 E. LIBERTY LANE, PHOENIX (480) 460-7312, KEYSTONEMONTESSORI.COM

Be prepared when biking
South Mountain By Andy Lenartz
M
ountain biking is one of the most popular activities at South Mountain Park and Preserve and offers another excellent way to connect with nature. This one may seem intimidating at first, but does not require bombing down an actual mountain. Just that you are off the road with your tires touching dirt. GETTING STARTED
Andy Lenartz is an Ahwatukee
1. Access to a mountain bike. resident and avid hiker and mountain bike rider. Reach him This one has a bit of a price at andy_lenartz@yahoo.com. barrier to getting started, so make sure it is something you will enjoy before investing in your own bike. Try renting a bike first, or better yet find a friend with an extra you can borrow. 2. A helmet is a must. Will come with the rental bike. 3. Water/snacks. Bring extra water, the trails here are open, dusty and hot. 4. Sunglasses will protect your eyes from sun, bugs and rocks. 5. Proper footwear. Sturdy, closed-toe athletic shoes, not flip-flops. If you enjoy the activity and want to engage on a regular basis you could spend up to $10,000 on a bike. If money doesn’t matter, by all means purchase one of those. But that is definitely not required for an enjoyable experience. Do your research on where you will likely ride on a regular basis and the type of equipment needed and share examples of the trails you are looking to ride with the bike store staff. You can get a decent new bike for $500 to $1,000, less for a used one. This will be a hard-tailed bike (will have shocks in the front, not the rear). Starting at about $1,000 you can get a full-suspension bike with rear shocks and some upgraded components, which are nice to have but not a necessity for riding the Desert Classic Trail at South Mountain and other trails of similar ability level in the Phoenix area. Avoid spending much less than $500 on a new mountain bike and make your purchase from a local bike shop or outdoor retailer. Several people that I know have purchased cheaper mountain bikes in an attempt to save money, and I’ve seen 22

Mountainside Martial Arts
rooted in Wado-Ryu By Mountainside Martial Arts
M
ountainside Martial Arts is a private martial arts school teaching traditional Japanese karate that is curriculum- and discipline-based. The staff offers unparalleled karate instruction to children ages 4 and older, and adults, as well as 1:1 private lessons and private group instruction. Mountainside Martial Arts boasts a family-oriented atmosphere with a student study center and large viewing room. Sensei Rick Savagian has an extensive background in physical education, exercise science and more than 55 years in martial arts. The outstanding facility has been teaching and competing for MMAC since 1979. The philosophy of Mountainside Martial Arts Center is based on the principles and precepts of Wado-Ryu: • Uphold the principles of propriety and courtesy • Cultivate the spirit of effort • Perfect a mind of patience • Live the way of truth • Do not lose self-control or act in a violent manner
them literally fall apart the first time the bike hit a small hill and kicked a vibration through the cheap frame. The bikes sold at mass retailers are not high enough quality to withstand trail riding, so avoid wasting your money on these. You also will need to buy: • A helmet. You want to be spending at least $30-$50, considering what it’s protecting. • Floor bike tire pump. $50 will get you a solid one, but you could certainly spend more if you wish. • Additional tire tubes. $5-$10 each; get a couple. • Hand-held tire pump, repair kit, tire lever and bike tool. You can get these for around $25 total. • Water. Consider a backpack with a water reservoir; it can also hold snacks and repair items.
Mountainside Martial Arts Center’s success is based on the principles and precepts of Wado-Ryu. (Photo courtesy Mountainside Martial Arts Center)
The teaching curriculum is based on biofeedback and the study of kinesiology, which, in turn, enhances fine, gross and social motor skill development. Physiologically, it promotes stronger focus, balance and self-esteem. For over 40 years Mountainside Martial Arts Center has worked to make a difference in the community. Its goal has always been to make a positive humanitarian in the spirit of peace and harmony. MOUNTAINSIDE MARTIAL ARTS CENTER

How to maintain
mental focus
T
he technological advancements made in the 21st century have undoubtedly made life easier in many ways, but this golden age of gadgets has not come without some negative side effects. Thanks to the near-constant availability of the internet and devices like smartphones and tablets, many men and women find it difficult to maintain their focus throughout the day. But while such distractions are never too far away, there are some ways to stay focused and productive. • Get more exercise. Studies have shown that exercise and improved mental focus are linked. In a 2013 analysis of 19 studies involving more than 500 children, teenagers and young adults, researchers found that exercise sessions between 10 and 40 minutes immediately boosted concentration and mental focus. That improvement might be a result of exercise increasing blood flow to the brain. Men and women who find themselves struggling to focus at work after lunchtime may benefit from incorporating some exercise, whether it’s a brief walk or a more strenuous workout, into their midday routines. • Perform breathing exercises. Nervousness is an oftoverlooked cause of loss of focus. When nervous, breath can become shallow and restricted, which can have a negative impact on the flow of oxygen to your brain, making it more difficult to concentrate. Professional athletes have long espoused to the virtues of breathing exercises as a means to calming their nerves, and professionals can follow suit. Some simple breathing exercises can help busy professionals multitask more effectively by helping them concentrate on the tasks at hand and overcome the distraction of having so much to do at one time. • Stay hydrated. A recent study published in the Journal of Nutrition found that dehydration caused loss of focus and a sense of fatigue among women. While the loss of focus was considered insubstantial and the study only examined women, remaining hydrated throughout the day may make it easier to focus on work and other tasks throughout the day. • Get adequate sleep. One of the best ways to improve focus during the day is to make sure you’re getting enough sleep at night. Sleep deprivation produces a host of negative consequences, not the least of which is its impact on cognitive functioning. Research has shown that sleep deprivation compromises alertness and concentration, making it more difficult to focus at work and tackle tasks that require deep analysis and thought. In addition, a survey from the National Sleep Foundation found that sleep-deprived men and women are less likely to exercise and eat healthy diets, each of which can boost mental acuity. Focusing in today’s atmosphere of constant distractions can be difficult, but men and women can overcome diversions by employing a handful of successful strategies aimed at improving concentration.

Desert Sage Wellness Center
helps patients navigate health care By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski
J
amie Fitzgerald MTCM LAc founded Desert Sage Wellness Center in 2016 with one goal in mind: to bring natural health care to the Desert Foothills community. To accomplish this, she brought together a collaborative team of wellness professionals that is able to offer patients a wide range of therapies including acupuncture, stretch therapy, nutrition, herbology moxibustion, thermography and cupping. The practitioners have faced their own health challenges and are using those experiences and education to help their patients navigate their health care. The wholistic health clinic is dedicated to the principles of treating the whole person, getting at the root cause of illnesses, and facilitating an individual’s healing process. Patients leave feeling empowered and equipped with the information and resources necessary to take control of their health to live healthier lives. Most people know their health puzzles include diet, stress management and exercise, but they are missing out on larger pieces: inflammation, toxicities and hormone balance. The clinic’s goal is to help you put patients’ health care puzzle together. Fitzgerald is the chairwoman of the Arizona State Acupuncture Board,

Dr. Harold Wong advises against taking
‘Wall Street risks’ By Dr. Harold Wong
W
elcome to Ahwatukee. Many of you have these financial goals: • Retire early, happy and comfortable or wealthy • Maximize retirement income to afford fun and bucket-list items • Help family, such as paying for your grandkids’ college expenses • Save the $250,000 or more of medical expenses that’s average for a retired couple • Never get wiped out again by future stock market crashes Virtually all savers have most of their money in the stock market because the interest rates since 2008 are the lowest levels in history. Yet, that exposes you to future stock market crashes. Since January 2000, we’ve had the dot-com crash and the
2008-2009 financial panic crash. Each time the stock market dropped by about 50%. If you’re interested in alternative strategies that do not involve Wall Street risk, contact me for your free strategy session. In one hour or more, we will show you how to: • Reduce your tax by 50% or more with absolutely legal strategies • Increase your retirement cash flow by two to five times what banks, bonds or stock dividends typically pay • Give you less risk and more control of your money For seven years, I wrote the only column on money for major daily newspaper’s community section, and I currently write the financial column for the Ahwatukee Foothills News and the SanTan Sun News. I have educated thousands of CPAs, attorneys and Realtors.

When I was a kid in small town Idaho, adults would ask me and my siblings what we wanted to do when we grew up, we would all answer the same thing: I want to be an artist! The reason was because my dad was an artist and we wanted to be like him. He was and still is a very talented oil painter. We inherited his love for art and would spend hours drawing, doodling and painting whatever our imaginations could dream up.
Outside of the office I like to travel, spend time with my family and perform with my band around the valley.
Voted one of 2019 Phoenix Magazine’s Top Dentists, Dr. Bhatnagar founded BellaVista DentalCare in 2007 with a deep commitment to provide the best possible patient care. Dr. Bhatnagar is one of the nation’s top 3% dentists to be awarded the Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry (FAGD), and is currently on track to achieve the mastership award in 2020. Trained in Pittsburgh, Dr. Bhatnagar’s passion for dentistry drives her to stay current with advances in the field through study clubs and seminars. Her team exemplifies excellence by being voted Best of Ahwatukee by Foothills News 9 years in a row, and meets weekly to discuss their patients’ current needs and advances in the industry. Dr. Bhatnagar’s focus is cosmetic, implant, and family dentistry. She is appreciated by her patients for giving them personalized care and for being a perfectionist in her work.

hat do you need? What do you want? Whatever it is, you very likely can find it in Ahwatukee. Mom-and-pop businesses remain the lifeblood of the village, supported by a community that embraces the concept of “shop local.” The village now even has a funeral home and an addictiontreatment facility. It’s a community of entrepreneurs, both brick-and-mortar and home-based businesses. When your air conditioner goes on the fritz, for example, you could call one of the big companies that advertise on television and they will come out and take a look. Or you could instead call any number of family-owned, Ahwatukeebased firms that may just be able to get to you more quickly and possibly get your system back up and running for less. When you’re ready to sell your house, dozens of Ahwatukee Realtors are ready to help, and they specialize in the local market. If you find yourself in need of a skilled lawyer, Ahwatukee law firms are easy to find. Maybe you’re a romantic. You’re so overjoyed with your relationship that you want to express it with the gift of flowers. Or perhaps even an edible arrangement. You won’t have any problem finding florists in “The Tuke.” Whatever you do, don’t drive without insurance. And make sure your homeowners policy is up to date in case a monsoon takes a toll on your home. There is an agent in just about every strip center. Comprehensive medical, chiropractic and dental services are also available throughout Ahwatukee. Whether you need a dentist to do an extraction or a chiropractor to provide you some relief from back pain, you’ll find just the services you need. What happens when you are rushing out the door to have your nails done at one of the many fine nail salons in “The Tuke” and your garage door won’t open? Electrical problem? Or have you popped a spring? Before you pop something else, call an Ahwatukee expert to repair the thing. Is it tires for your car? There are about a dozen places that can handle that for you. And what in the name of Randall Presley is up with that water that comes out of the faucet? It is so hard, but otherwise safe and fine for drinking. Maybe it’s time for a softener or reverseosmosis system. There are guys in Ahwatukee who do that. Among home-based businesses, Ahwatukee has everything from dog walkers to bakeries. For those who truly are newcomers to the community, consider joining local Facebook pages that provide great information and sometimes even some humorous insight into our Ahwatukee community.

Family-owned CK’s
marks 15 years in Ahwatukee By Coty Dolores Miranda
I
n 15 years, CK’s Tavern & Grill has become a village favorite known for its tasty food offerings, seven-days-aweek happy hour, 35 HDTVs featuring sports and trivia, and live entertainment each weekend. But there’s more that has kept the restaurant/bar on the receiving end of innumerable and annual Best of Ahwatukee Awards. It is the family behind it all—from parents “Papa Jim” and Joanne Flaum to their two children, Chad Flaum and Kendra Flaum Pieratt. Patrons typically are greeted tableside by one or more when they’re in the house. Even Pieratt’s son Gavin, 11, and stepdaughter Campbell, 10, wear welcoming smiles when their mother brings them to lend a hand at CK’s. And her husband, Kyle, has also been known to pitch in when the place is bustling. This year, CK’s marked its 15-year anniversary. It was 2004 when the family purchased the former Bar Nun at 4142 E. Chandler Boulevard. Six months and a covered patio later, CK’s Tavern & Grill was born; the initials stand for Flaum children Chad and Kendra. “I call myself the Big C, but Kendra is the important K,” Chad said with a laugh. “We recruited Kendra out of Intel to be part of the family restaurant project and that, obviously, was a very smart move.” Chad, who runs the family’s Old Town Tortilla Factory in historic downtown Scottsdale, continues to work “on the business side of things” with Pieratt and his parents at CK’s. “Our whole family stays involved with CK’s but Kendra is the face of CK’s. I call her the mayor of Ahwatukee,” the proud elder brother proclaimed. Jim, now concentrating his energies on ranching near San Tan Valley, said the family as a whole has long been involved in the hospitality industry, and now focuses its joint experiences on CK’s Tavern & Grill and Old Town Tortilla Factory. “Even before we owned the restaurants, Chad and Kendra were both involved with customer service in restaurant jobs, retail jobs and corporate business, and had their own personal success. We all four have the desire to be the best at what we do and always try to step up the level on food, service and community involvement,” said Jim, who retired from the McDonald’s Corp. in 2000. “Joanne and I have all the faith in both of them to continue the family reputation and success of our business. I personally feel so confident that I know Chad and Kendra have the

standards and vision that I helped set from day one (that) it’s like I’m there all the time,” he continued, adding: “Kendra and Chad have grown the business successfully and been able to compete in today’s world through their education, business acumen, youth and competing in 2019. We’re both very proud of them.” Both siblings were involved in food service in college. Chad was a server at Houston’s and P.F. Chang’s while earning his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business. While matriculating at ASU, where she earned a degree in supply chain management from the W.P. Carey School of Business, Pieratt was a hostess at El Paso Barbeque Company, advancing to serving and bartending. “I thought I learned all about restaurants until we purchased Bar Nun/CK’s. It was a big reality check. My family has had experience running two other restaurant concepts. We’ve owned the Old Town Tortilla Factory since 2001, and owned a Teakwood’s location for about six years,” she said. She calls Ahwatukee “an amazing community.” “It’s an honor to have made it 15 years in Ahwatukee,” Pieratt said. “It hasn’t been easy dealing with costs, labor, competition and everything else that restaurant owners, well, all business owners, have to deal with. Our customers are extraordinary and have made CK’s what it is today. “We never dreamed that we’d have such loyal customers and friends. Customer feedback and recommendations have dictated a lot of the business decisions that we have made, and we will continue to make improvements based on them.” Pieratt said the cornerstone for the past and future success of CK’s is customer service and continuing to make the restaurant a gathering place for all the community. “We’ve grown sales by focusing on food and service quality and striving for repeat business,” she said. “Looking forward, we see CK’s still being the neighborhood place for customers to enjoy their favorite sporting event, bring the family for a meal, listen to their favorite band, enjoy happy hour or daily food and drink specials.” “We’re always looking to meet new people who like the ‘Cheers’ feeling of CK’s. I like to say there are no strangers at CK’s, only friends we haven’t met yet.” Among the many Best of Ahwatukee awards received by CK’s, the Best Place to Watch the Game has been an annual one. The tavern/grill was also voted Business of the Year in 2014 and 2018. It’s also won Best Happy Hour, Best Sports Bar in Ahwatukee, Best Wings, Best Burger and Best Restaurant. CK’s Tavern & Grill’s owners also are well-appreciated for their community support—both those that are known about and countless other quieter donations. “We focus on giving back to the community whenever we can, including participating in school dinner nights, hosting an Angel Wish tree over the holidays for more than 100 children, hosting charity golf tournaments, advertising in high school sports programs, holding private fundraisers, and consistently donating gift cards to other events and fundraisers,” Pieratt said. The family is also quick to praise its staff, several of whom are long-term employees—including CK’s Chef Reynaldo
Gomez who has been with them 15 years. “We are one big family; we take care of each other even though at times we may fight like a family,” Pieratt said with a laugh. “I truly love my staff and I hope they know that.” Chad added, “I consider us to be lucky owners who have such a talented group of managers, kitchen staff and front-ofthe-house employees. I truly believe that’s been the key to our 15-year success in ‘Tukee.”

Keegan’s Grill
marks 30 years in the Valley By Coty Dolores Miranda
S
teve Johnson’s humble beginnings as a teenage dishwasher didn’t presage his career trajectory, but his success in the hospitality industry here and abroad amazed even himself. Johnson owns Keegan’s Grill in Ahwatukee and coowns four more restaurants in his hometown of Omaha. The Keegan’s Grill brand owns restaurants in Chandler and Phoenix at the Biltmore Plaza, under different owners. The eatery recently celebrated its 30th anniversary with special menu items, raffles and prize giveaways.

Keegan’s Grill opened in 1989 at the Biltmore location and, since purchasing the Ahwatukee pub in 2015, Johnson built on the brand’s ambiance and traditions established three decades ago. Since purchasing and then renovating Ahwatukee’s Keegan’s Grill, Johnson has maintained many of the traditions set by the original owners. And Johnson is very much a hands-on owner. Most weekdays find him delivering preordered Keegan’s Grill lunches to area business complexes. Keegan’s Grill also offers catering to large groups, providing hearty hors d’oeuvres platters and an extensive selection of entrees and salads. Johnson describes Keegan’s Grill’s lunch and dinner fare as “American comfort food.” A special “football menu” is served for college and NFL games. Brunch is available Sunday and includes mimosas and its Bloody Mary. Besides corned beef hash and eggs, its extensive menu offers frittatas, eggs Benedict, quinoa and oat bran pancakes and huevos rancheros. Johnson said he’s “very proud” of his staff who are selected due to their shared beliefs that client service is paramount. Among long-time employees at the Ahwatukee Keegan’s Grill is Eusebio Diaz, who’s been with the restaurant 23 years; Kelly Clark, bartender and server for 20 years; Chelsea Zaft, 14 years; Julie Davis, 13 years; and Meagan Newbury, 12 years. “We work hard to be the neighborhood to-go in Ahwatukee,” Johnson said. “Our from-scratch cooking, great food value and attentive wait staff have helped us become well known in the community, and we plan to do what it takes to keep that reputation intact.” KEEGAN’S GRILL AHWATUKEE

A community
rich in faith A
hwatukee is rich in faith, partly as the result of the work of the late Rev. Don Schneider, who became pastor of the community’s first church, Mountain View Lutheran, in 1980. He made it a launching pad of sorts for several other churches in the community, including Corpus Christi Catholic Church, by extending the use of its premises to their fledging congregations. As Ahwatukee historian Martin Gibson told the Ahwatukee Foothills News, “As other religions’ parishes sprang up, Mountain View’s doors were open to Baptists, Catholics, Episcopalians—all had a place of worship during their parishes’ infancies, thanks to the generosity of the church. Mountain View Lutheran Church was instrumental in fostering a sense of community in Ahwatukee.” Ahwatukee also is home to Rev. Deborah Hutterer, who in September 2018 was installed as the sixth bishop of the Grand Canyon Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. She is responsible for overseeing 89 congregations serving 44,000 members spread across Arizona, southern Nevada and St. George, Utah. Another local notable is architect Steve Bardusan, who has designed more than 80 churches across the Phoenix metro area, including Mountain Park Community Church. Forced out of their first church by the South Mountain Freeway, the Mountain Park Community congregation in 2017 moved into their new church on 48th Street south of Chandler Boulevard. Just up the street from Mountain Park, the Parish of St. Benedict—one of Ahwatukee’s two Catholic Churches— hopes to build a new church on its campus and have it opened by the end of 2019.

The communities
within the community make Ahwatukee great
L
ike so many people who commute to work each day, your mind might drift to a pile of work awaiting you at your desk, or you might be considering some of the countless things there are to see, do and experience in your new town. There are so many ways to get involved with your Ahwatukee community and meet others who share your interests. Ahwatukee newcomers don’t have to look far to find groups of folks with similar interests. That won’t necessarily ease a commute, but finding satisfying leisure-time activities in a beautiful locale can make a stressful work life far more tolerable. A good place to start after a particularly bruising week is comedy. There are no brick-and-mortar comedy clubs in “The Tuke,” but there are comedy clubs that give periodic performances in Ahwatukee venues. Find one and go yuk it up. Maybe boxing is a good escape after the week you just had. Put on the gloves and have at it. If you’re into it, there’s very likely a community of people in the village who also are into it. There are mom’s clubs and women’s clubs. Gays and singles have groups they can join. For writers and book readers, join the conversation. Maybe you just enjoy a good lunch. Other people in Ahwatukee do, too, and there are many places where lunch groups meet to eat. Let’s say politics is your thing. The donkeys and elephants both have Ahwatukee-based organizations where you can go commiserate about the opposite animal’s doings in various legislative bodies. Maybe that will even spur you to run for office. Before you do, it might be wise to join a Toastmaster’s club in Ahwatukee to brush up on your public speaking. Ready to try to make change? Get involved with your HOA, the largest being Ahwatukee Board of Management and Mountain Park Ranch. Just be ready to referee whether a home’s paint color is correct for the neighborhood, if the owner needs to address weeds in the front yard, or whether it’s OK to leave a portable basketball hoop up in the driveway overnight. Being on an HOA gives you a chance to meet your neighbors and have a say-so in what goes on right where you live. If your interest is business and you are adept at networking, or if you’d like to learn to be more adept at networking, join the village chamber of commerce. It’s likely to be a mutually beneficial experience. Arizona is such a beautiful state, and at least half of the year there is no better place for outdoor activities. Ahwatukee is onboard, with running, hiking, camping and bicycling clubs. Perhaps you’re finished with the day-to-day drudgery that those who still must work endure daily. Draw a deep breath, look at the mountains and decide where you want to play golf or pickleball today. Groups in “The Tuke” make that easy for seniors.
There are a wealth and variety of communities within the community that make Ahwatukee a place where people want to live. 62

ill Watson has been serving Ahwatukee as one of the community’s leading real estate agents since 1993. Upon graduation from ASU with a degree in real estate, he began his real estate career in the newly developing Ahwatukee. Back in 1993, Ray and 48th St. were just barely blooming! At the young age of 23, Bill started knocking doors in Ahwatukee neighborhoods. Having met thousands of Ahwatukee residents, Watson has observed the village’s growth and has brought families to Ahwatukee. He conveys his pride with his Adopt-aStreet sign on Ray Road. He chose to raise his own family here, with his kids attending local schools, playing sports, performing
at community events, and being involved in various organizations. His foundation in this community provides a great resource to his clients. A 26-year top agent in Ahwatukee, Watson has won numerous awards, been highlighted in professional magazines, spoke at national conferences, led local workshops for new agents and guested on a local real estate podcast. His clients benefit from his experience, knowledge of the area, and relentless effort to provide exceptional service. As evidenced by his clients’ testimonials, Watson is a professional in every way, a master at negotiating, and someone who works hard at making every sale as seamless as possible. Family Fun for all ages CHILI COOK-OFF AND CAR SHOW The Ahwatukee Board of Management sponsors an annual Chili Cook-Off in March or April at its headquarters on the northwestern corner of Warner Road and 48th Street. It is one of only two ranked chili cookoffs in Arizona that can qualify winners for the National Chili Cook-Off. WINE & BEER TASTING FESTIVAL To help pay for the annual holiday Festival of Lights along Chandler Boulevard, the committee that organizes it holds two fundraisers. This is the adult one, generally held in April before it gets too hot. Local vendors supply the food and the band always rocks. EASTER PARADE The Kiwanis Club of Ahwatukee has been organizing the annual Easter Parade down 48th Street from Warner Road to Elliot for four decades on the day before Easter, offering a colorful array of floats and costumes. THE AHWATUKEE BOWL For more than two decades, the varsity football teams
of Desert Vista and Mountain Pointe high schools face off on the gridiron, rotating at each other’s stadiums in late September or early October. It really is Ahwatukee’s own Super Bowl. SANTA ARRIVES VIA CHOPPER On the Friday after Thanksgiving, Santa Claus has been arriving by helicopter for more than 25 years on the southwestern corner of Elliot Road and 48th Street, courtesy of Millie’s Hallmark. Bands, choirs and lots of kids are on hand to welcome in Christmas. FALL KICK-OFF PARTY The annual fundraiser for the Festival of Lights is a family-friendly, day-long party at Desert Foothills Park on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Games, bands, contests, vendors, food and much more keep the party going to the grand finale: a parade of holiday-decorated motorcycles escorting Santa to the stage. FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS Each year, the festival attracts 15,000 to 20,000 people to Chandler Boulevard between Desert Foothills Parkway and 24th Street. The festival has been a tradition since 1996. The lights are on display from 6 to 11 p.m. Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day. AHWATUKEE NUTCRACKER Longtime local dance instructor Kimberly Lewis started the Ahwatukee version of the Christmas staple more than 20 years ago, and for three shows, usually the third weekend of December at Desert Vista High School, a huge cast wearing hand-sewn costumes puts on a spectacular show.

Since 2000, Transportation Day has been an annual event that draws 3,000 children and their families to explore vehicles of all sizes, shapes, and types. Want to climb in a helicopter, fire truck, police car, or city bus? How about motorcycles, motor homes, or race cars? You can experience all forms of transportation in early February on the Horizon Presbyterian Church and God’s Garden Preschool campus. FARMERS MARKET The Ahwatukee Farmers Market, held on ABM grounds on the northwestern corner of Warner Road and 48th Street, isn’t so much an event as an institution. It runs every Sunday morning and attracts hundreds of people in search of fruit, vegetables and handmade crafts.
