A DIFFERENT WORLD

few weeks ago, everything was pretty normal at Ventana Monthly’s offices in Downtown Ventura. We were all working in the office, for one thing. And then, over the course of a few days, everything started to change rapidly. Based on recommendations from health experts and government officials, some staff chose to work from home . . . then it stopped being a choice, due to shelterin-place directives. Children came home from school indefinitely, events were canceled, beaches and parks and bars — even the Ventura Pier — were all closed to public access. Stories for our sister publication, the Ventura County Reporter, were put on hold while our writers and editors went into overdrive to bring readers the latest news and developments related to the coronavirus. While life as we know it has ground to a near-halt, we seem busier than ever. As a lifestyle magazine, Ventana Monthly doesn’t navigate the same waters as a news publication — and I hope that this issue will feel like a welcome respite from current events. April is traditionally our Spring Home and Garden issue, which takes on a certain poignancy now that home is where many of us while away the hours. But I’m happy to say that our articles this month offer intriguing stories and lots of visual appeal. The Camarillo home of Penny and Brad Bibey is the kind of place anyone would love to spend some time. The outdoor areas are expansive and beautiful, with a gorgeous pool, babbling fountains, winding footpaths and a splendid collection of colorful succulents —

including the beautiful examples shown on our cover. There’s nothing about this landscape that says “desert,” even if the foliage is adapted to the driest of climates. It’s a paradise perfect for California dreamin’. The Ventura Historic Landmark now owned by Julia Campbell is vastly different, although no less delightful. Built in 1929 and known as the Petit Tudor, it radiates history: English Tudor design, famous architects, illustrious ownership, interior elements that are very much of their era. Campbell says she can imagine the many hands that have touched its gleaming wood banister, and I think reading about her home will give you that same sense of time and place. April is when spring really starts to take hold, and we usher it in with a Food and Wine feature bursting with all things fresh, green and newly ripe. We offer up a selection of recipes that are crisp, colorful, healthy and easy to prepare, and we hope they will add something both delicious and interesting to your dining table. As we enter yet another week in lockdown, none of us can pretend things are the same as they’ve always been. It’s doubtful we’ll go back to the way we were anytime soon. But we can still celebrate the good things we have now, and try to keep our eyes on the horizon of a brighter future. From all of us here at Ventana Monthly: Take good care, find joy in each day, and be well. – Nancy D. Lackey Shaffer nancy@ventanamonthly.com

HELLO, SPRING! FRESH, HEALTHY AND DELICIOUS RECIPES TO MAKE IN APRIL.

A

BY EMILY CHAVEZ

|

PHOTOS BY LUIS CHAVEZ

As the weather warms up, we are always looking for a fresh way to add seasonal fruits and vegetables to our meals. In fact, planning meals around seasonal produce enables us to save money when shopping while also getting the freshest food possible. Ready to eat now in April are apples, asparagus, beets, blueberries, carrots, citrus, parsnips, peas and potatoes — all of which I have

incorporated into everyday light and bright salads, warm and comforting entrees, savory sides and a refreshing dessert. These nutrient-rich and diverse recipes have been a welcome change to my standard lazy-day go-to’s because they simply take only a smidge more of an effort — but the payoff is that I actually enjoy what I eat.

Apple Carrot Slaw Salad Serves 4 Total Time: 20 minutes Active Time: 20 minutes • 2 tbsp. chopped walnuts • 1 small garlic clove • 1 lemon • 5 oz. mixed carrots • 1 honeycrisp apple • 1 tbsp. olive oil • 1 oz. red wine vinegar • Salt and pepper to taste -U sing a pestle and mortar, pound half of the walnuts with a pinch of salt until very fine. Add the garlic and smash into a paste. Then add the fresh-squeezed lemon juice, olive oil and red wine vinegar and incorporate well to make a sauce. - Finely slice carrots and apples. Toss with the sauce. -T op with remaining chopped walnuts and salt and pepper to taste.

Parsnip, Pear and Sausage Bake Serves 4 Total Time: 45 minutes Active Time: 15 minutes • 1 large red onion • 3 Bartlett pears • 4 parsnips • 4 large sausages • 1 tbsp. maple syrup • 2 tbsp. olive oil • 1 tbsp. red wine vinegar • Black pepper to taste

- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. - Peel, quarter and separate petals of the red onion directly into an oven-safe frying pan on medium high heat. Add 1 tablespoon of olive oil and salt and pepper to taste, tossing regularly in the pan to avoid burning. - Quarter and core the pears then toss into the pan. - Peel parsnips into strips using a vegetable peeler. - Add red wine vinegar to the pan and then pile on parsnip strips and sausage. - Drizzle remaining tablespoon of olive oil and a pinch of pepper before placing the entire pan in the oven to bake for 30 minutes. - Remove the pan from the oven briefly to drizzle over the maple syrup and then bake for an additional 5 minutes.

A miraculously lush garden in Camarillo showcases the richness and diversity of succulents. BY MARK STORER PHOTOGRAPHY BY DAN MADSEN

APRIL 2020

In the week before the world became unglued from itself, I sat in the dappled sunlight of Brad and Penny Bibey’s Camarillo backyard and stared at the tide of succulents in a fresh garden full of impossible colors as it rolled from a wet, clear tropical green to magical reds, golds, oranges and blues. I was enchanted and, for a while, the only corona on my mind was of the gorgeous late-winter California sun opening splendor and serenity on a hillside where nothing happens by accident, except the wonder of growth and greenery. The Bibeys are California transplants like so many of us, from northern Ohio. Brad was offered a chance to help build a printing business called Vision Printing and Penny works in the local oil industry. Their Camarillo home, between the Las Posas Country Club’s golf course and Highway 118, became a work in progress in the early 2000s. “There isn’t one inch of this place, except the pool, that hasn’t been renovated or redone,” said Brad. From tearing down the old house and building a new one to changing the house’s footprint to shifting various landscapes, only the pool has remained as it always was. Working with Chris Amendt, a landscape designer whose company, Succulent Mosaic, was born of her own experimentation with Southwest plants in the wake of drought and wildfire, the Bibeys set about to reenvision what a garden could be. “I was a cyto-technologist, someone who diagnoses cancer under the microscope,” Amendt said. With an eye for detail born of a world under

glass in a lab, she was in between jobs when she redid her own yard. “I was the first person in my neighborhood to rip out my lawn and I made a dry creek bed and planted succulents and it turned out to be a lush, beautiful environment instead of a desert landscape,” Amendt said. After the Thomas Fire, Amendt went to work under the umbrella of her husband’s general contracting firm. She met the Bibeys while playing golf and they began to talk about creating a new kind of garden. “Brad and Penny and I worked really hard at looking at their garden and taking advantage of the slope and level changes and imagining what could be here,” said Amendt. The backyard is a large space with an outdoor living room, a storage and utility room, the pool and a small grass area for what the Bibeys hope will be a couple of dogs in the near future. The garden occupies the central view, sloping slowly and gently up toward the border wall. “I wasn’t a big fan of succulents,” said Penny. “I was thinking it would just be green and I wanted color. But my thoughts on that have totally changed and it’s absolutely beautiful and now I’m out here maintaining this.” “Landscaping in Ohio has a different shape and form than California,” Brad chimed in. “What we thought we knew was that succulents were desert-scapes. And that’s not the look we wanted. Chris helped me understand that we can achieve more than that.” The garden is a forest of detail that slopes gently up with a flagstone pathway separating two elevations. A retaining wall below is bordered with another walkway and the floor of the garden has rocks, boulders and low-lying succulents. An overhang from the outdoor living area provides shade on the right side where lush ferns spring out in different directions and a three-

piece clay-jar recycling fountain provides a trickle of water and an evergreen feeling as the garden curves outward to the sun and an explosion of colors with aeoniums, which thrive in full sun or shade and orange and yellow clivia. In the sun, more aeoniums give way to aloes, agaves and blue fescue that provide a kind of canvas on which Amendt places her own handdesigned etched and painted rocks and clay containers. She refers to various of the plants as “him” or “her”; the Bibeys and she walk through the garden as if they’re in a house with old friends. There are stacked jade plants and elephant bush and fiery red kangaroo’s paws that tower up over the garden — their scarlet red appears to bleed out to lighter reds, oranges and yellows across the carpet of plants. Fire sticks and Euphorbia frame centers of dwarf bottlebrush and the hummingbirds come calling, seeking solace from the perennial gift of moisture. Tropical butterfly milkweed occupies space toward the border wall Amendt said that she will keep it trimmed, as tropical milkweed is not a native plant and can present parasite problems for fledgling butterflies.

“This slope was originally uniform all the way across,” said Brad. “Things happen when you take your time and look at it, though. So, I came out here and created multiple tiers and spent time with a shovel and pick and moved dirt around.” Decomposed granite fills in the spaces between the flagstone walkway and the gray of the granite allows the colors to more fully come alive. “A lot of these succulents grow so easily and taking cuttings of them and replanting them is easy,” said Penny. The plants develop root systems quickly and without much fuss. The tide of color washes across the hillside with plants growing wider and taller with birds of paradise toward the other end. There, a fenced-off vegetable garden grows varieties of tomato plants, herbs, mints and lettuces in half-wine barrels. “Penny’s a really good cook,” said Amendt, “and this is going to be a go-to place for her to add to her kitchen.” Like all good gardens, what you see is done with painstaking attention to detail.

LANDSCAPE designer Chris Amendt with Penny and Brad Bibey.

“Sometimes, nature needs a little help,” said Brad. “Nothing in this garden happened by accident. The garden boasts 92 lighting fixtures, which have now all been hidden by the overgrowth of the plants. The garden at night, say the Bibeys, is more spectacular than even during the daytime. Along with Amendt, they’ve discovered the secret to a beautiful garden: Along with building and maintaining it, one has to be inspired by it and find joy and even hope in it. This tide of growth, lush and inspired dreams of textures, colors and dimensions that thrive in a dry climate, is more than just nature: It is part sweat-equity and part miracle. And miracles of hope, growth and greenery will do nicely about now. v

LIVING HISTORY THE 1929 ABODE OF BEN NAMBA AND JULIA CAMPBELL HONORS THE PAST.

I

BY LESLIE A. WESTBROOK

|

PHOTOS BY LUIS CHAVEZ

If you’ve never been to an event at Namba Performing Arts Space in Ventura — a cool jazz concert, dance class, theatrical performance or another cultural happening — you may not know that the space is supported by and named for Ben Namba and his wife, Julia Campbell. Ben Namba, who found his success in the spice trade and traveled the globe, suffered from Alzheimer’s disease and recently passed away at home. His interesting history was lovingly recalled by his widow. Their private sanctuary is a gracious, historic Tudor-style home — historically designated the “Petit Tudor” — set on three-quarters of an acre behind private gates with views to the sea. “When we moved here in 2001, our general contractor told us that in the early 1990s the house came on market in disrepair. He and a partner had contemplated buying it and tearing it down and building three homes. After Ben heard that story, I suggested we apply for historical status,” said Campbell. The house is officially designated the “Petit House,” thanks to the couple’s efforts.

SPICE OF LIFE “Ben was of Japanese heritage. He was born at home in 1930 in Manchuria. His father was a Consul General in Manchuria during the time Japan was conquering the world,” Campbell said. He came to the United States in the early 1960s working for a Japanese company that had a relationship with Union Oil and subsequently met first wife, Helen: “A wild, crazy redhead,” Campbell shares, “whom he fell madly in love with!” ENTERING the Petit Tudor is like taking a step back in time, when historic architecture defined gracious living. REGAL RESIDENCE: The home is designed in the English Tudor style, characterized by a high-pitched roof, front-facing gables, decorative half-timbering and ample stonework.

Later, Namba left this job and worked for a spice trader in downtown Los Angeles, where he learned the business from a single man who had no heirs. Upon preparing for retirement, he told Namba: “If you want my business, it’s yours for the taking.” Namba traveled the world buying and importing spices. He and his partner, Jesus Martinez, founded Tampico Spice Company. The company is still in existence today, selling spices throughout the U.S. Campbell says Namba credits much of the company’s success to hiring retired employees from other spice companies who “really knew a lot and also cost less to hire”. His move and connection to Ventura came later.

OCEANSIDE DREAMS “When Ben was a boy he spent summers at the waterfront. During the war, his father said to him that Japan could never win the war with America because they lacked the resources. His parents sent him as their first-born son, after six daughters, to a farm in Japan to be safe.”

APRIL 2020

The Namba family was run out of Manchuria — and landed “with nothing” in Tokyo. There was no work for a diplomat, so Ben’s father became a teacher. “Ben always remembered the water from his youth and all his adult life he said he was going to own a house on the beach,” Campbell said. After he had made it in the spice trade, he searched from Santa Barbara to San Diego, eventually landing at Solimar Beach, where he tore down an existing home and started building his dream house. Then Helen passed away. In 1998, Campbell met Namba (they were introduced through her son-in-law) when he was living on

the beach. Campbell eventually gave up her “forever house” in Sierra Madre to live on the beach with him. Idyllic in some ways, beach living had its drawbacks. At times, there was too much sun and wind. It was noisy and there was no privacy. After about six years on Solimar Beach, Namba asked Campbell how would she feel if he were to sell that house (which was too modern for her taste). “It was magical to live there, but I got what he was unhappy about,” Campbell said of the dense community. “We’d be sitting and eating dinner and people walking along would be waving to you.” He purchased a tear-down home and began to rebuild when their realtor told them that the Petit house was about to go on the market.

LIVING HISTORY “Was it worth it to sell the land and buy this? We mulled it over,” Campbell recalled. “We knew this was a one-of-akind house that could never be duplicated. I’d go on home tours and I told Ben that I loved that house and he said, ‘Okay, that’s it!’ ” A deal was struck and the couple moved into the house on the hill. Original blueprint design

plans by two Los Angeles architects who designed the beautifully crafted 5,500 square foot house (a two-story home with four bedrooms and four baths) are prominently displayed. The Tudor-style house was designed by John Corneby Wilson Austin and Frederick M. Ashley. Austin was a Los Angeles-based architect and civic leader who participated in the design of several landmark buildings in Southern California, including Los Angeles City Hall, Shrine Auditorium and the iconic Griffith Observatory, which he also designed with Ashley. The house was built in 1929 for Charles Petit, a Ventura County engineer and the longest serving mayor of Ventura (1953-1969). The portrait that hangs of him in Ventura City Hall was actually taken in the library of this home. Charles and wife Eva had five sons and one daughter, so the house had plenty of enjoyment by the Petit family during their tenure there. The house passed through two other owners before Namba and Campbell bought it in 2001. Previous owners Dan Frederickson (president of Kinko’s for a decade) and his wife, Carole “Cicie,” did some remodeling, including the kitchen. The basement wine cellar and guesthouse were also additions created during the period the home was known as the “Kinko’s House.” The original “boy’s room” for the Petit’s five sons and sleeping porch is now a media room. Considering the house’s history and pedigree, it’s no surprise that Namba and Campbell had the house designated a Historical Landmark in 2002. “I always think about all the history here and when I go up and down the stairs. I imagine how many hands and, especially, how many kids have run up and down these stairs,” said Campbell.

ABOVE: The kitchen strikes a beautiful balance between modern convenience and historic ambience. LEFT: The sewing room, with its elaborate wallpaper and traditional woodwork, is one of the house’s most distinctive spaces.

Namba was not a particularly social person, but the couple hosted events for the Ventura Music Festival and supported other nonprofits. Five years ago, they became the main financiers for the Namba Performing Arts Center on Oak Street. Even though Namba had been suffering from Alzheimer’s disease for the past decade, he and Campbell still attended events at the center that bears his name. “When I took Ben with me to Namba and told people that his money was funding the event and space, and then I shared that he suffered from Alzheimer’s,” notes his lovely wife-cumcaregiver, “people always came up to me afterwards and shared their stories about Alzheimer’s disease.” As Campbell said just after her husband’s passing on February 26, “Ben was born at home and died at home and never spent a day in the hospital.” His legacy will live on in the arts . . . and in the hearts of his many friends and family.

ELEMENTS of the house’s original design have been lovingly maintained, including wallpaper, beadboard ceiling and wood paneling. Walls and furniture in warm, rich, earthy tones add to the vintage feel.
