L E T T E R S An Open Letter to Interim City Manager Lane Dilg, Part 2 Dear Ms. Dilg, Reducing community transmission of coronavirus is our urgent duty. Spiking COVID-19 cases endanger our visitors, our workers and our residents. LA County guidelines call for either a six-foot separation between seated dinners and passing pedestrians or a six-foot tall cleanable barrier where the six-foot margin is unworkable. Not maintaining these mitigations multiplies deadly transmission probabilities. Main Street’s new Al Fresco plan removes the valuable center of what could have been a wide-open piazza, with enough space to define socially-distanced seating areas with room for safe pedestrian traffic throughout. Room for traffic trumps room for safe separation in the plan we got. A low cost remedy, except for the price various stakeholders would extract and the distasteful flavor of crow Al Fresco proponents would have to eat, would be to just remove the K-rails and mark out the table areas and six foot-limit lines with surveyor’s temporary spray paint. No need for street repainting closures nor another $190,000 to do the work. Look at what the community would gain by reclaiming this Main Street public common from a transportation corridor to
N E W S the piazza atmosphere Al Fresco proponents promised. Increasing business activity by increasing physical capacity with newly acquired space is the obvious solution. Administering that space in an intelligent manner will be much easier without the traffic corridor, so the customer experience will improve — and with it the business income and city taxes that the community relies upon. My proposal is for city administrators to bite the bullet, take off the blinders, and observe how poorly the Main Street rescue plan is actually working out under today’s pandemic threat. When you notice the deadly hazards, be brave enough to say, “We screwed up! But it’s so important that we must prioritize fixing Al Fresco now.” Notice how well the Second Street/ Arizona farmers market works with no traffic. Tim Tunks Santa Monica

Westchester-Playa Salutes 2020 Graduates with Fourth of July Caravan PHOTOS BY ZSUZSI STEINER
By Christina Campodonico Westchester and Playa del Rey pulled out all the stops for local 2020 graduates on the Fourth of July. A caravan of cars, a fire truck, police vehicles and a specially designed float accompanied graduates as they drove or were chauffeured through the residential streets of the two Westside neighborhoods, starting at 11:30 a.m. at St. Bernard’s in Playa del Rey this past Saturday. Westchester Lutheran parent, local artist and inventor Dan Garr drove a 14-foot-tall float that he designed in the shape of a graduation cap for nearly two and a half hours, trying not to “tickle the trees” in the process, he says, but it was all worth it — not only for the joy it brought to the 2020 graduates, but also the local community. “Every block was a brand new expression of happy kids and bubbles flying around,” says Garr, who said the spectators he

Venice High School Sends Off Graduates with a Curbside Celebration got their moment in the spotlight. Even LAUSD District 4 representative Nick Melvoin dropped by for an hour to take pictures with the graduates. Sophie Sabbah, a Venice High teacher and former swim coach, organized the drive-thru graduation. “It was the best thing ever because just the look in the eyes of the parents and the kids and the tears, it just made such a huge difference, I knew that this was going to be an amazing gift for them, especially with what’s going on right now with being on lockdown and not being able to finish the semester,” said Sabbah. Since seniors weren’t able to celebrate their achievement with a traditional live graduation, Sabbah wanted to make sure that they left Venice High in a memorable way. “It was just so wonderful because Venice is such a huge family,” she says. “We always have each other’s back. We are always there for each other. I love it. That’s what makes us feel so special.”

By Julia Esobar and Christina Campodonico Graduating Venice High seniors had a drive-thru graduation celebration at the foot of the storied high school’s Venice Boulevard campus on the morning of June 12. From 9 a.m. to noon, over 200 Venice High seniors (now graduates) and their families were a part of a graduation parade that ran from the back of the high school’s gym, up Walgrove Avenue and then onto Venice Boulevard, where the lane closest to the school was closed especially for the parade. Feted with congratulatory banners and posters lining fences and teachers’ cars, students drove up to the front of the school with their families — some even in fancy blue and red convertibles or classic cars. After exiting their vehicles, students posed for photos in front of a step and repeat banner in front of the Myrna Loy Statue. This way, every student

Shakespeare in a Box Zoom is the playground for LMU’s virtual Shakespeare on the Bluff PHOTOS COURTESY OF LOYOLA MARYMOUNT UNIVERSITY
By Shanee Edwards Theatre professor and director Kevin Wetmore admits he has a “bad habit” of wanting to do Shakespeare outdoors for free. He created his first Shakespeare festival in Connecticut when he was just 19 and didn’t stop there. Having taught at Loyola Marymount University since 2005, it’s no surprise that when the college built Lawton Plaza, a big open-air amphitheater, Wetmore was compelled to create a summer Shakespeare program called Shakespeare on the Bluff that would provide free entertainment for the local community. The Bard’s most popular plays like “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and “Othello” have been performed at Lawton Plaza and Playa Vista’s Concert Park and the Bandshell for the past two seasons. Wetmore was all set to direct “The Tempest” and “Henry V” for the theater company’s third season when COVID-19 hit. “Obviously, it would not be wise to perform or gather together in crowds, so back in April we decided we just wouldn’t have a season this year, along with every other theater in Los Angeles,” says Wetmore. Both he and his student actors were disappointed but understood there was no other choice until Wetmore got a phone call from LMU’s Dean of the College of Communications and Fine Arts, Bryant Keith Alexander. “He had seen the ‘Saturday Night Live’ they had done from their homes and said, ‘Could we do Shakespeare that way?’ The more I explored the possibility it seemed like, yes, we actually could do Shakespeare on Zoom and stream it to YouTube,” says Wetmore. To meet the challenge Wetmore decided to choose two of Shakespeare’s lesser-known plays, “All’s Well That Ends Well” and “The Two Noble Kinsmen.” The former was performed on Zoom on June 19, with cast members acting from their homes around the country, in cities like Atlanta, Miami and San Francisco. “The Two Noble Kinsmen” will come to virtual life on Friday, July 17, also with cast members in various cities. “I find that kind of thrilling – you’ve got people all over the United States coming together in
on Zoom seemed at first to be a tedious task,” she says. But both Wetmore and assistant director Kate Bianco encouraged the actors to really explore that space as if they were on a stage or in a park. To light herself, Oreskovich

Loyola Marymount University thespians have been playing with the possibilities of Zoom as a stage all summer a virtual space to present two of Shakespeare’s lesser-seen plays,” says Wetmore. Much to Wetmore’s surprise, dozens of current and former LMU theater students responded to his request for actors when he posted the casting call on social media. He put together a company of thespians that includes two decades-worth of LMU theater students, from the classes of 2004 to 2023. As exciting as this novel theater experiment has been for Wetmore, it also came with big challenges. “The danger with doing Shakespeare on Zoom is it just becomes a whole bunch of talking heads and it becomes boring very quickly,” says Wetmore, who worked very hard with the actors to include visual surprises since competition for eyeballs is tough. “The audience could be binge-watching ‘Tiger King,’ so why should they make this choice?” Another challenge is that no two actors occupy the same space, causing movement to be very restricted. “‘Two Noble Kinsmen’ has a Moorish dance in the middle of it!” says Wetmore. A Moorish
dance is a big group dance of 14 people singing and dancing in a circle. “How do you do that when no one’s in the same room? … It’s remarkable how inventive you have to become,” he says. To give the illusion that actors are in the same room, Wetmore had his actors employ virtual backgrounds and had them hand props to other people off-camera at home, simulating the actors handing them to their scene partner. “Someone hands something towards the camera and lowers it down so it drops out of the audience’s range of sight, and the other person picks it up, and we discovered it looked like they actually handed the other actor something through the computer. That’s really kind of cool,” Wetmore says. Recent LMU graduate Olivia Oreskovich, now living in Hollywood to pursue her acting career, played Helena in “All’s Well That Ends Well” and plays a herald and a messenger in “The Two Noble Kinsmen.” Oreskovich says at first it was a struggle to act on Zoom because she’s a very physical actor who likes to take up space. “Adjusting that to a small box

Ballet is Back
Westside School of Ballet reopens with sociallydistanced summer session By Katherine Brubaker Summer dance intensives, hosted by dance schools and academies around the world, are a vital part of a young dancer’s training. For these intensives, dancers often leave their homes for several weeks to attend elite schools in pursuit of a career in dance. But as a result of COVID-19, everything has changed this year. Many summer intensives — if they haven’t been outright canceled — have moved online, leaving students with a sliver of the physical training they desperately crave and need to prepare for dancing at the college or professional level. Westside School of Ballet in Santa Monica, however, has decided to offer a summer session with in-person classes, which continue through Aug. 1. To provide their students with in-person training, the studio has followed guidelines from the LA County Department of Public Health and instituted a myriad of cleaning and social-distancing protocols that are being strictly enforced at the school. Mizuki Sako, who runs the studio’s front desk, took me on a virtual tour and outlined the precautions being taken. “Before coming into the studio, students must wait in line outside. We take their temperature one by one. We have a no touch sign in at the moment, so everyone signs in through Mindbody, which is the online format we have been using and that way no one has to touch anything and we can keep track of how many are signing into each studio,” said Sako. Stations have been set up with hand sanitizer and Clorox wet wipes at the entrance of the building and at the entrances of each studio space. Staff make sure to wipe down all the common areas
and studios before and after each of the classes. The studio has a cleaning crew that comes in each night and cleans all the spaces. There is also a long list of protocols on Westside’s website — limited class sizes, strict instructions on when, where and how dancers may enter the studios, and mandatory mask wearing while on the premises. All parents must sign a waiver on behalf of their children before they attend the summer session. Dr. Richard Tahvildaran Jesswein, president of the school’s volunteer guild and parent to two dancers at the school, participated in advocacy for Westside’s reopening by speaking with the LA County health board. “A lot of people perceived us as a gym or fitness center, which is not what we are,” said Tahvildaran Jesswein. (The Westside School of Ballet encompasses a studio space and non-audition ballet academy, while its sister organization Westside Ballet of Santa Monica is a pre-professional nonprofit dance company, which performs an annual production of “The Nutcracker” and a spring performance at The Broad Stage. Together, the two entities create the Westside Ballet community.) The mission to open up the school again was in part out of necessity. “It was on the verge of not coming back,” said Tahvildaran Jesswein, “so we were able to open in the nick of time — this throws a lifeline to the studio.” According to Tahvildaran Jesswein, many students were in need of dance classes being in-person again. “This is a second home for them,” said Tahvildaran Jesswein, adding that “[the studio] was getting reports from parents about kids suffering from depression.”
PAGE 8 THE ARGONAUT JULY 9, 2020
Kalea Harrison has the freedom to move at Westside School of Ballet’s in-studio summer session Twin sisters Jasmine and Kalea Harrison also found dancing at home challenging. “It was getting really hard because we couldn’t jump. Our floor was really slippery so it was really hard to turn, and we couldn’t really do pointe,” said Kalea. Jasmine continued, “we kept on kicking furniture. Also, on the camera, it makes it hard to see everyone because our screens are so small. Sometimes WiFi is bad and the teacher is cutting in and out.” Though the summer intensive is changing up their normal dance class routine, students don’t mind the new protocols if it means getting to dance in the studio with their classmates and teachers once again or getting in-person instruction, which they might not be able to receive elsewhere. Renée Spaltenstein is 17 and in Level 7 at the summer session. During the year, Spaltenstein trains at the School of American Ballet (SAB) in New York City. She would have been attending Pacific Northwest Ballet’s summer intensive if it had not been for COVID-19 causing her
program to go online. Instead, Spaltenstein chose to return home for the in-person training. “I love [the protocols] — I think it is so important to be careful,” said Spaltenstein, who also trained at Westside before attending SAB. By far though, the biggest change for dancers seems to be wearing masks while dancing. This difference, while seemingly small, has been a large topic of conversation at the studio. Sawyer Jordan, age 13, is in Level 5 for the Westside summer session. Jordan feels that the masks are necessary, though sometimes uncomfortable. “Depends on the mask — some of them are really thick and hard to breath in and some of them are looser and make it hard to spot. So there is some worry about them falling off and worry about being able to breathe — it’s really about finding the right mask. That’s the key,” said Jordan. Though initially difficult, Spaltenstein excitedly explained the eventual benefits of the mask. “I know it may be a little hard to dance with masks, but it is so
much better in the long run. I’m gaining a lot of stamina! Which is something I had difficulty with. The big jumps are getting easier with the mask on!” said Spaltenstein. Seventeen-year-old Level 7 student Zane Tahvildaran Jesswein, son of Dr. Richard Tahvildaran Jesswein, described to me his own struggles with dancing while masked. “I sweat a lot, so the mask will get damp and I’ll have a lot of trouble breathing through it,” said the younger Tahvildaran Jesswein with a chuckle. But he’s also excited to be back dancing in the studio after spending months not wanting to disturb his downstairs neighbors. He lives on the second story of a small apartment building. “This is much better than the alternative of not dancing at all. Really sweet that Westside is open — they are one of very few. I have friends from Utah and New York, a couple in Arizona, and all of their studios are closed and they can’t do anything.” Parents are also happy that their

Face masks are a new accessory of students’ ballet uniforms children are back in the studios. Nadine Harrison, mom to Jasmine and Kalea, felt that the space she had at home for virtual classes was not sufficient for her daughters’ training. “They weren’t able to get the same intensive training at home over Zoom,” she said, “our space at home is very limited. You need special flooring for the pointe shoes. So I only had a 10’-by-13’ piece of flooring and one barre. It really was not enough for two girls,” said Harrison. Parents are confident that the protocols in place at Westside School of Ballet will keep their children safe. Katya Michaels, mom to student Aleena Michaels, explained why: “I know that there is a limit for the number of students they registered for the summer intensive, they have the masks, and they take their temperature at the entrance, so I honestly don’t feel that it’s any different than going to a grocery
store,” said Michaels. Caprice Walker is the Youth Artistic Director. Walker believes in the importance of in-person dance instruction and is happy to be back in the studio. “It’s been wonderful. It’s wonderful to be back in the studio with the students. There’s an energy when we are together that just can’t be replicated on Zoom. You try, but you’re reaching through a screen. Here, to have the children in person and to be able to make the corrections more directly, not that I can touch them, but I’m right there for each individual child,” said Walker. When asked about whether or not the youngest children have been following safety protocols correctly, Walker explained that they had been. During this response, one father, Michael Guttentag, piped in on the Zoom call. “They’re dancers, they are well trained dancers! They know how to follow rules,” said
Guttentag. Michaels also believes that the ballet dancers are more careful than their parents. “The kids are more stringent and more cautious about observing all the things — more alert, more aware of what they are doing. I have high confidence that the kids aren’t misbehaving,” she said. Through this community’s efforts, it has been able to break down virtual barriers and come together again. Students and teachers alike depend on one another to be responsible in and outside of the classroom. They all understand the magnitude of the situation, as well as recognize that dancing with one another in-person again is a privilege. Westside’s third and final summer session starts on July 20 and concludes on Aug. 1. light burned out. “As luck would have it, my desk lamp took its place,” she says with a laugh. But ingenuity and adaptability are nothing new in the theatrical world. Wetmore thinks William Shakespeare himself would appreciate this unusual approach to performing during a pandemic. “Shakespeare wrote ‘King Lear’ during a time of plague, so he’s no stranger to having to change
production,” says Wetmore. “Whether it’s the theater company going on tour because the theaters of London are closed down due to plague or deciding to perform in York instead of London, I think Shakespeare would see us as connected in terms of making it up as you go along in response to the current reality,” he says. Oreskovich agrees. “I think Shakespeare would be inspired that actors are finding a way to persevere,” she says. “Just
because we couldn’t see our audience, doesn’t mean this show was not for them. They are why we are performing, why we continue to be inspired and tell stories. I think any playwright would be happy to see that happening, especially in the world we’re living in now.” RSVP at cfa.lmu.edu/rsvp to get information on how to watch “Two Noble Kinsmen” for free. The virtual play starts at 8 p.m. on July 17.

Mochi for Breakfast Japanese tradition meets the all-American flapjack PHOTOS BY AMY WATSKY
Top off your mochi pancakes with sweet seasonal berries, some homemade compote and a lemon slice for a hint of citrusy flavor By Amy Watsky For those of you looking for a way to spice up your usual quarantine brunch, look no further! This recipe combines two all-time favorites from both my Japanese and American heritages — mochi and flapjacks — into one perfect fusion. These pancakes are fluffy and light while at the same time packing a satisfying chew and they pair perfectly with local, seasonal berries. This week, I highlight Koda Farms, a local California farm growing rice since the early 1900s. Their Mochiko sweet rice flour is perfect for this recipe, adding the unique texture and flavor that everyone loves about mochi, a traditional Japanese snack made from pounded sweet rice, while still retaining the light fluffiness that we all love about pancakes. The combination of the zesty blueberry compote, creamy Greek yogurt, and the refreshing burst of local berries complement this recipe so well and makes for
an easy yet unique variation on this breakfast classic. For our vegan readers, feel free to omit the eggs and use aquafaba for the egg whites. This recipe can easily be made gluten-free by replacing the all-purpose flour with its gluten-free alternative. Recommendations for sourcing ingredients: - Once a month, Koda Farms sets up shop at the Santa Monica Farmers Market. Keep an eye out for them on a Wednesday between 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. - Pick up Forbidden Fruit Orchards’ blueberries at the Santa Monica Farmers Market on Wednesdays or Saturdays (8 a.m. to 1 p.m.), the Venice Beach Farmers Market on Fridays (7 a.m. to 11 a.m.) or the Mar Vista Farmers’ Market on Sundays (9 a.m. to 2 p.m.). Blueberry season ends in July, so squeeze out the last of berry season. - Also at Santa Monica Farmers Market: Harry’s Berries! Specializing in the sweetest strawberries and also nearing the

end of their season… get some quick! While you’re at it, snag a pint of their fresh strawberry sorbet. Batter Ingredients • 2 eggs • 1 cup of milk (dairy or non-dairy) • ¼ cup of sugar • ¼ cup + 1 tablespoon of tapioca flour • ¾ cup of Koda Farms mochiko rice flour • ¼ cup + 1 tablespoon of AP flour • 1 teaspoon of baking soda • 1 ½ teaspoons of baking powder • 1 tablespoon of melted butter or any type of oil • 1 teaspoon of vanilla • ½ teaspoon of salt Compote Ingredients • Blueberries • Lemon, or any citrus of your choosing • 1 tablespoon of brown sugar Other Toppings
• Greek Yogurt (I like using vanilla) • Washed berries (blackberries, strawberries, blueberries) • Matcha powder (optional) • Coconut flakes (optional) Flapjack Instructions • Before touching any of the ingredients, take a nonstick pan and place it over low to mediumlow heat. This will allow for the heat to spread evenly, resulting in perfectly golden pancakes that are cooked all the way through. • In a bowl, whisk together tapioca flour, all-purpose flour, mochiko, baking soda, baking powder and salt. • In a different bowl, separate egg whites from the egg yolks. Beat the egg whites until they hold soft peaks. Whisk together the egg yolks, milk, vanilla and butter until completely incorporated. • Mix in the dry ingredients until just combined, and gently fold in the egg whites with a spatula or a fork. The batter should be fluffy and light.
• Spoon a quarter cup of batter into the pan, and flip when it’s golden brown on one side and bubbling on top. Each side should take 2 to 3 minutes. • Top the pancakes with a dollop of Greek yogurt, a generous ladle of compote (see recipe below) and lots of fresh berries. A sprinkle of matcha brings out the flavor of the berries, and coconut adds a nice texture and flavor for those who want to mix it up. Compote Instructions • Place the washed blueberries and sugar in a saucepan and turn the heat up to medium high. Once the mixture starts to bubble and some berries start to burst, lower the heat until the compote is syrupy and easy to pour, about 10 minutes. Add in a tablespoon or two of water if it’s too thick. Squeeze in a quarter of a lemon or citrus of your choosing, and if you’d like, some grated zest. • Some lovely variations include a splash of orange liqueur, freshly squeezed orange or a bit of vanilla.

WAIL WATCHING My roommate just found out her ex-fiance is terminally ill and is likely to pass away soon. Though they had a weird relationship, I can tell she’s taking it pretty hard. I really want to be supportive, but I honestly don’t know what to do or say around a grieving person. I’m worried about saying the wrong thing, especially because I’m really uncomfortable with grief. SEE MONSTER Months of quarantine have made FaceTime first dates the new thing. I’ve been chatting with a few guys on dating apps, and some of them have asked to schedule FaceTimes. Many of my friends have done it, but it still feels weird to me. Though my photos are right in my dating profile, talking with someone over video feels too revealing and not in a good way. Should I try it anyway, or should I wait until it’s safe to meet in person? —Resting Shy Face
but to get the whole of what they’re expressing, you need to add the “pictures”: the emotions they’re displaying. For example, social psychologist Dacher Keltner, who researches emotional expressiveness, observes that “when a colleague shows signs of anger — with tightened lips, furrowed brow, and slightly raised upper eyelid — I learn that he or she is frustrated, is appraising the current interaction as unfair, will likely act antagonistically, and may feel a sense of righteous indignation.” When people advise that you shouldn’t Men, especially, have very visually driven sexuality, so if you won’t Facereveal too much on the first date, I think Time, you’re probably at a disadvantage they’re talking about your areolas. compared with women who will.
