Putin’s Puppet Vladimir Putin’s puppet Donald Trump is a political dead man walking. November 3 is the scheduled date of Trump the Traitor’s political execution, which will be watched live on TV by hundreds of millions of happy people both here at home and around the world. The end of Trump’s tyranny will be the beginning of hope and change for us all. Don’t miss your chance to vote for the American presidential candidate Joe Biden. The political demise of demonic Don the Con will no doubt be the highest rated reality TV show of all time, so stay tuned, because the voters are about to tell Trump he’s fired! It’s all over for Benedict Donald. Russia’s useless idiot Trump the Chump is done. The American choice for president Joe Biden will be elected the 46th President of the United States in an overwhelming electoral college landslide, not to mention by what is sure to become one of the largest popular
vote margins of victory in American presidential election history. Trump’s deranged death cult (formerly known as the Republican Party) is a national embarrassment. Fortunately, most Americans are good patriotic people who will no longer tolerate Traitor Trump’s psychotic circus of incompetence, corruption and cruelty. This upcoming election is all over but the shouting. Specifically, the shouting will be coming from the world’s whiniest lying loser, Donald Trump, with his usual dimwitted and dishonest refrain of “Hoax! Fake news!” The story of the November 3rd election will be America wins, Vladimir Putin loses, and delusional Donald Trump can go inject his lungs with Lysol all he wants. It won’t save his illegitimate, pathological presidency from the wrath of the American people on Election Day. Trump is a loser and an idiot! Sincerely, Jake Pickering Arcata, CA

Video obtained by Playa Vista-based TMZ shows partiers grooving mask-free and socializing, but not... er... social distancing. TMZ reports that the revelry continued uninterrupted by police from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday (Aug. 7). Patch.com reports that Los Angeles County Sheriff’s (with a station about six miles away from the location) were aware of the incident, but had no further info. While the party technically took place in LA County, LA Mayor Eric Garcetti has threatened to cut power to such events in the city proper. The LA County Department of Public Health has also issued a “legally binding health officer order” banning such large-scale gatherings.

Westside Women’s Clubs Celebrate the Centennial of Suffrage with Back-to-School Community Events This weekend, Silicon Beach Social and the Woman’s Club of Playa del Rey celebrate back-to-school season and a century of women’s suffrage with back-to-back community events. On Aug. 14, Silicon Beach Social, a recently founded chapter of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC), hosts a back-toschool backpack drive, benefiting the Mar Vista Family Center. From 9 a.m. to noon, the group will be giving out 192 pre-packed backpacks filled with school supplies, including COVID-19 essentials such as hand sanitizer and face masks. Members of José Radio will play music for the families waiting to pick up their backpacks for a fun backto-school “shopping” experience. “We’re just trying to help relieve some of the pain of back-to-school shopping for parents,” says Alexis Rowley, President of Silicon Beach Social. “We know it’s really stressful right now.” The women’s clubs’ efforts don’t stop there. On Saturday, Aug. 15, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. the

Woman’s Club of Playa del Rey and Silicon Beach Social team up for a drive-by canned food drive and voter information community event in the lot behind the Woman’s Club of Playa del Rey (8039 W. Manchester Ave., Playa del Rey). Food and monetary donations raised during the event will benefit Food Pantry LAX, a volunteer-based community program that provides groceries to local low- and no-income families and individuals. To keep the event as contact-free as possible, they ask donors to place all canned goods in the car’s trunk, so volunteers can collect goods safely upon arrival. In honor of the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage and to educate voters about the 2020 election, the two women’s clubs will also be giving out voter registration forms and fact-sheets with important voter information. Groove with the Grunion on Area Beaches Next Week... Traditional Westside nightlife may have halted during this pandemic, but beachgoers who live by the phases of the moon have something novel to look forward to — a silvery dance upon the sand performed by oodles of grunion fish! From Aug. 18 to 21, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) expects nighttime “grunion runs” to take place between 9:30 p.m. and the wee hours of the morning, depending on the day. The sardine-sized critters are expected to wriggle ashore for their moonlit mating dance at Dockweiler and Venice beaches, according to reporting from Patch.com. During this time, anyone age 16 or above with a California sport fishing license can interact with and catch the fish, which are found exclusively on the coasts of Southern California and Northern Baja. Keep an eye out for fish that are slender, slippery and small, with blue-green backs and silver stomachs. After swimming up the beach slope, the females bury
themselves tails-down into the sand while up to eight males simultaneously deposit milt (or sperm) onto the female to fertilize her eggs. A male grunion can fertilize the eggs of several females during a single run. Most grunion eggs incubate for ten days in the sand, until the next high tide comes to hatch and carry the baby grunions out to sea. Few grunion live for more than three years, according to CDFW. Flies, sandworms, beetles, birds, larger fish, beach erosion and humans are all threats to the species, but current regulations have kept the grunion population relatively stable. Per a California state law against fish waste, CDFW asks that grunion catchers take only what they can use, and that mates and their eggs are not unnecessarily disturbed. Observers are welcome to watch without a license but encouraged to maintain social distance. Visit wildlife.ca.gov/Fishing/ Ocean/Grunion to learn more. — Dev Jaiswal
“An enriched independent school experience for children with social or academic differences.” Elementary School Grades 1-5 Middle School Grades 6-7
REACH Elementary and Middle Schools embrace that idea that every student benefits from the tools and educational model that is right for that students’ specific learning styles and needs. This educational approach is defined by a mission to offer the opportunity of an enriched independent school experience to children who have social or academic challenges that significantly impact their ability to achieve success in a classroom setting. Previously, offerings were limited to elementary-aged students in grades 2-5, however, the success of the program warranted the expansion into middle school with options for students in grades 1-7. Beginning in the 2020-2021 school year, REACH will be joining its fellow consortium of schools on the campus of Rolling Hills Prep and Renaissance Schools in San Pedro. REACH continues to offer limited spaces to elementary and middle school-aged students with learning differences including, but not limited to ADD/ADHD, anxiety, specificlearning disabilities, Central Auditory Processing Disorder, and students who are twice-exceptional or diagnosed with highfunctioning autism. Parents are encouraged to contact the admission team regarding their child’s individualized needs or to ask questions about educational programming, the learning environment, or the social-emotional practices of REACH.

Venice Neighborhood Council Votes to Remove Homeless Encampments to Comply with ADA By Holly Jenvey The Venice Neighborhood Council Homeless Committee held a special meeting via Zoom this past Friday (Aug. 7) to settle on a motion to clear local sidewalks of homeless encampments if they violate the rules of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The motion, which reads, “Sidewalks to be cleared if found to be in violation of Americans with Disabilities Act,” was submitted by Eva Greene on Aug. 5. It addressed how disabled community members have not had proper access to neighborhood sidewalks due to homeless encampments blocking pedestrian footpaths. Proponents of the motion cited that encampments violated the ADA’s 3-foot clearance policy for sidewalks. Even though the motion passed with four members in favor and two opposed, there was still heated debate between board members.
“We’re not trying to run all the homeless out of town, we’re trying to walk down the street.” — VNC Councilmember Vicki Halliday “There are two separate issues and they are not mutually exclusive,” said Frank Murphy, co-chair of the committee, who voted in favor of the motion. However, as the homeless would have to move their encampments, Murphy said they would also need to be accommodated. “A lot of these encampments can be moved three feet and still be in the same place,” said Vicki Halliday, the first council member to vote on the motion. She drew on the experience of one of her neighbors, who was killed in a wheelchair after having to use the street. After telling this story, she voted in favor of the motion.
“We’re not trying to run all the homeless out of town, we’re trying to walk down the street,” Halliday said. Councilmembers CJ Cole and Brian Ulf also voted in favor of the motion. Ulf explained how the homeless had lots of rights in Venice and the city at large. However, he also observed that there is an ADA problem, which also extends to members of the general public. “We have to have people out there to make sure these sidewalks are clear,” Ulf said. Though, like Murphy, Ulf said that this motion must work for both the homeless and disabled. The committee and public
discussed how this was a complex issue due to the lack of public housing options in Venice. Ulf pointed to “ProjectRoomkey,” an initiative Governor Gavin Newsom started in April to house the homeless in hotels across the state during the pandemic, as an imperfect solution. “Anyone that’s in Venice can’t be put downtown in a Roomkey,” Ulf said. Despite some homeless being sheltered, many are still living on the streets and removing them could further the spread of COVID-19, pointed out council member Michael Rapkin. “This motion deals with the entire city. If you kick them [the homeless] off the sidewalk, they must be placed elsewhere,” Rapkin said. He also explained that limiting the number of encampments on the street won’t eradicate the problem of homelessness as a plan is needed for where the

unhoused will go once removed from the streets. Rapkin said that more people will become homeless because of the pandemic and discussed how the current designs of sidewalks aren’t accommodating. “Most sidewalks can’t accommodate an extra three feet,” Rapkin said. Council member Liz Wright joined Rapkin in voting against the motion. However, the entire council voted unanimously to remove lines that would pass the motion onto the U.S. Dept. of Justice Civil Rights Division as the motion couldn’t be passed beyond city limits. There were 22 attendees in total with 14 participants.

Look No Further Than Lanea Shake up your summer with all-day happy hour and a mini piñata PHOTOS COURTESY OF LANEA
By Anthony Torrise This summer might not have turned out how we expected, but there are still lots of ways to enjoy the sunshine. At Lanea in Santa Monica, they have the bites to make it all the more enjoyable. Depending on preference, you can get Lanea’s dishes delivered, to-go, or enjoy them outside at divided tables just a few blocks from the ocean. In celebration of their one year anniversary, the cocktail bar on Broadway brings us a happy hour special that lasts all day, every day. This deal means that their tacos are only $2 and cocktails are only $9. The street-style tacos have a big flavor for their small size and the DIY options are sure to bring family dinners up a notch. The Comida meal pack comes with a dozen tortillas, a pound of meat or veggies, pico de gallo, guacamole, chips and “the works of toppings” as described on the
Lanea’s seaside seating offers a spot to sip a cocktail or two menu. For extra customization, the ingredients are available to order individually. If more is needed to make you stop by, the cocktails will help. Like the extensive list of tacos,
there is no shortage of creations with a kick. The most notable is the spicy margarita, which doubles the kick with fiery habanero honey. The Watermelon.Sugar.High is as refreshing as
a real melon with added sweetness from Strega liqueur. Lanea’s drinks overflow with creativity best shown through the frozen cocktails that are made for the summer sun. But
these aren’t the slushies we loved as kids. Drinks like the Catalina Wine Mixer and the Third Street Sling make it possible to forget that alcohol is even in them, thanks to their blends of fruity flavors. What’s most exciting about Lanea’s menu are the multiple meal packages they offer. The packages come with four to eight tacos, two to four cocktails, and chips and salsa. There are also extras included in some of the packages! The Uno Juego pack comes with the popular card game, Uno, and a Mexican blanket. Other extras include mini and regular-sized piñatas, a clay copita (or a small squat cup traditionally used for sipping mezcal), and a jicara shot glass (a riff on another kind of traditional Latin American sipping cup). LAX launches PPE vending machine program, featuring gloves, sanitizer and N95s By Dev Jaiswal Next time you go to the airport and see a vending machine, you might walk up to it thinking it will hold your heart’s (or stomach’s) desire for salty snacks or chocolate chip cookies. Unfortunately, in the age of COVID-19, you would be incorrect. In airports around the country, including our very own LAX, new vending machines are being installed to offer items designed not to let food particles into your mouth, but to keep coronavirus from coming out. In other words, potato chips are out and PPE is in! “We think that it’s certainly an additional benefit and a convenience for people to have access to that type of personal protective equipment in the airport before they go through security,” said Heath Montgomery, Director of Public Relations at Los Angeles World Airports. By Jacqueline Fitzgerald If cabin fever is making you crazy, consider restoring your sanity with a beach-y staycation. Millions of tourists flock to the Westside every year, so why not getaway in your own backyard? As hotel properties adjust to operating in the wake of COVID-19, it’s an excellent time for a change of scene while providing a much-needed boost to the community. “Local businesses need your support now more than ever and booking overnight visits contributes to rebuilding Santa Monica’s economy,” says Misti Kerns, President/CEO of Santa Monica Travel & Tourism. “Every dollar spent will help to propel the economy forward.” Across the board, properties are

Venice Family Clinic’s Health + Justice series tackles housing, homelessness, race and incarceration By Meera Sastry The COVID-19 pandemic has cast new light on the need for a caring and comprehensive response to the homelessness crisis, especially in Los Angeles and on the Westside. On July 30, Venice Family Clinic hosted a conversation concerning this intersection of health, housing and justice, the first in a series of online events to honor its 50th anniversary. The event featured three community leaders: Elizabeth Benson Forer, CEO of the Venice Family Clinic, John Maceri of The People Concern, and Chancela Al-Mansour of the Housing Rights Center. Carla Hall, a member of the LA Times editorial board, moderated. The featured panelists primarily discussed LA County’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic as it concerns homelessness. They praised some of the government’s efforts — chief among them its treatment of the situation as a real crisis. “They’ve pulled out all the stops to get things moving and to provide housing,”
